Lightning Bug - Chapter 16

Master list
Warning: underaged drinking?, self-doubt
Word count: 3.3k
You need to take a break,” Wanda said, placing a bowl of fruit in front of you. She wasn’t the first person to tell you that. You made it through the first movie but fell asleep as the second one started. You woke up early and claimed the dining room table as your study spot. Natasha said you needed to take a break. So did America, Kate, and Yelena. But you needed to study. You were confident in your reading comprehension and you could stumble your way through English and writing. But science and math terrified you. You huffed, taking a blueberry and popping it in your mouth.
“I’m worried about the math and science section,” you said. “You don’t need to use that stuff when you're living on the streets.”
“No matter what happens and where you are placed, we won’t think any less of you,” you didn’t say anything and picked up a strawberry. “How about you study for a little bit more and I steal Tony’s credit card and we go have yourself a girl’s day?” You giggled.
“I have money,” you told her.
“That man has more money than he knows what to do with,” she stood up. “45 more minutes.”
“45 minutes.” You confirmed.
*
45 minutes went by much faster than you thought and when Wanda came back with Tony’s credit card in hand you were ready to go. Wanda took you to a few small boutiques you didn’t know existed. Your mind kept going back to America’s room and how different it was compared to yours. “Can I ask you something?”  You asked Wanda as she went through different fabrics. You saw her nod. “When you first moved in with the Avengers, how did you decorate your room?” She laughed. “This isn’t funny!”
“I’m not laughing at you,” she said. “I just thought you’d ask me something different.” You raised an eyebrow at her. “My room was pretty bare for a few months,” she told you. You followed her to a candle section. “It wasn’t until I was comfortable with them that I started to show more of myself in what I put in my room.”
“How did you decide what to put in your room?” She picked up a candle and smelt it. She offered it to you but the smell made your nose tingle, not in a good way. You shook your head.
“Where is this coming from?” She put the candle down as you sighed.
“I want to decorate my room more but I don’t know how,” you said. “I don’t know what I like besides books.” Wanda smiled.
“Well, you just try a bunch of different things. You look for things that make you happy and make you comfortable in your own space,” you explained. You nodded. “Come on, let’s go to a different store.”
*
At the end of your shopping trip, you had 3 bags filled with stuff for your room and new clothes. You placed the bags on your bed and decided to deal with it later. You asked FRIDAY where everyone was. America was with Strange, Steve, and Tony were in a meeting, and Kate, Yelena, and Natasha weren’t in the tower. Which left you in the training room with everyone else. You grabbed your study material, and a drink from the fridge, and headed down.
They didn’t notice you when you walked in. Rhodey and Vision were flying in the air while Bucky and Maria were boxing. You settled in and opened the study guide. You weren’t sure why numbers and letters were in the same problem but here you were. Biting down on your lip, the numbers and letters were blurring together. You huffed, closing the folder. “Hey,” you looked up as Maria and Bucky walked over to you. Maria was unwrapping her hands. “What are you doing here?”
“Trying to study,” she raised her eyebrow, questioning you. “Tony offered to homeschool me but I need to take a placement test,” Maria sat down next to you. “I just don’t know what I’m doing.” Maria helped out her hand and you gave her the folder.
“Ooo math,” she winced. You giggled.
“I was great at math,” Bucky said, sitting down in front of you. “Let me see what you are doing.” Maria rolled her eyes, hitting the folder against his chest.
“When was the last time you did math? 1942?” Maria joked. Bucky glared at her, taking the folder.
“Math is math,” he said. “You can’t change it.” You tried to stifle your laughter at the look Maria sent you as Bucky flipped through the pages. “Okay, maybe you can change math.” You laughed, taking the folder from him. His cheeks blushed a light pink. You giggled, twirling the pencil in your hand.
“You should probably ask someone from this generation to help you,” Maria teased. Bucky rolled his eyes.
“I’m gonna kick your ass, Hill,” he deadpanned. You saw no bite behind his threat. It was like you were watching a brother and sister bicker with one another.
“I like to see you try, Barnes,” Maria looked at Vision and Rhodey who were descending from the ground and Rhodey was stepping out of his suit to walk over to you. “I bet Vision could help you.”
“What seems to be the problem?” He asked.
“Our newest residence is facing her fist villain,” Vision tilted his head, confused by Maria’s statement. “Math.” Rhodey whistled.
“That is above my pay grade,” he teased. “Come on Cyborg, let's hit the ring.” Bucky gave Maria a pleading look to save him but she pushed him on the back. The super soldier sighed and followed Rhodey to the boxing ring. You smiled at Maria and she jogged to check up with Bucky.
“May I see what you are studying?” He asked. You handed Vision the folder as he sat down next to you. “Algebra,” he looked at you but you merely shrugged. “Let me see if I can help you.”
He did help. He explained it in a way that made sense by applying it to real-life situations. They were no longer quotations on a piece of paper instead you were in the kitchen determining how many ingredients you needed to double the recipe. Each number was given a story. It slowly started to click but you still didn’t feel confident. “Does that make sense?” He asked. You nodded. It did but you were starting to get a headache.
“I feel like a game of chess is easier than this.” He smiled.
“If you can beat me in chess then you can tackle linear algebra,” you smiled, looking at the man sitting next to you.
“Do you really think so?”
“I do,” he said. “You are very bright, Miss. Y/n. You just have to believe in yourself. The rest will follow.”
*
FRIDAY said that Peter, MJ, and Ned were on their way to the tower from school so you waited for them on Peter’s floor. You lay on the couch, looking up at the ceiling as a Russian audiobook played in your headphones. It was a children’s book but you were proud of yourself that you understood a few words here and there.
That is how Peter found you staring up at the ceiling muttering random Russian words. “Hello,” he said slowly once you took your headphones off.
“Hi,” you paused the audiobook and leaned on the back of the couch as they walked into the kitchen. “How was school?”
“I didn’t punch anyone,” MJ said, opening a soda can.
“And I didn’t have to stop her from punching someone,” Peter added.
“I don’t think you’d be able to stop her if you had to,” you teased. Your joke pulled a laugh out of Ned and MJ as Peter’s ears turned pink.
“How was your day?” Ned asked. You turned around with a sigh.
“Math and science are stupid,” you groaned, leaning your head back as you watched the trio walk over to join you. “I’ve survived this long without it.”
“And that is why we are here to help,” Peter said. They sat around the couch with various snacks and sodas.
“Let’s get this party started!” Ned cheered.
“Never do that again,” MJ deadpanned, handing you a Pepsi. They used the same technique as Vision applying the math quotations to real-life situations but with the more advanced equations. You found out that you liked science, it was easier to wrap your head around the real-life applications. “It’s all about confidence,” MJ said, as she helped you through a geometry problem. “That’s what these tests are, 85% confidence and 15% knowing the material.
“She’s right,” you looked at Peter not missing MJ mumbling under her breath, “I usually am.” Petter playfully rolled his eyes. “You are going to walk into the test and crush it.”
“And if I don’t?” You questioned. Your voice was quiet.
“Then you don’t,” Ned smiled. “No one is going to look or treat you any differently.” Before you could respond, the elevator doors opened and Kate came running out.
“Guess what?” Her chest was heaving with excitement.
“What?” Peter questioned. She pouted.
“You're supposed to guess!” You smirked at the tantrum the archer was throwing. MJ rolled her eyes. You all threw out guesses. You guessed it Yelena was getting another dog but Kate quickly shut down that idea. That was sad, you liked the idea of having a puppy running around. Ned guessed if Wanda and Natasha were finally getting married. A guess you didn't hate it and would love to see it. It would be one hell of a party but Kate shook her head.
‘Tony is leaving Pepper to be in a relationship with Steve and Bucky,” MJ said, not looking up from the book she was reading. The silence was rather comical as you stared at her. She slowly looked up, shrugging her shoulders. “She said to guess.”
“Close,” Kate laughed. “But no. I overheard Steve and Tony and they said the Wakandans are coming to visit.” She sat down on the couch.
“No way!” Petter exclaimed. “Is Shuri coming?” Kate nodded.
“I guess T’Challa needs our help with something and whoever is going will be staying in Wakanda till the mission is over,” Kate put her arms on the back of the couch. You listened to your friends talk excitedly about the new visitors, half listening to it. You didn’t know much about the Wakandans besides the battle against Thanos that happened there and they dealt with vibranium.
“Shit, sorry,” MJ said, turning her attention away from Kate and back to you. “We kind of got sidetracked,” you giggled, gathering up the papers and closing the folder.
“Don’t worry about it. I could use a break,” your stomach made a nose and you felt your cheeks burn red. “I should probably go eat as well.” You thanked them for their head and headed back to your floor. Natasha was in the kitchen, making a peanut butter sandwich. “Do you have enough to make me one?” You asked.
“Of course,” she said, getting a second plate and two more slices of bread. You swung your feet as you watched Natasha make your sandwich. “How has your day been?” She put the sandwich down in front of you. You took a bite.
“Good,” it came out a little muffled as your mouth was full of peanut butter. Natasha raised her eyebrows, a smile on her face she got you a glass of milk. You took a sip. “Sorry, it was good. I went shopping with Wanda and studied with Peter,” she nodded. “I overheard the Wakandans are coming,” she looked up, surprised you knew about it. “Is everything okay?”
“Yeah,” she said. “They rarely ask for our help but we’ve racked up enough favors they like to cash in now and again,” she explained. You nodded, feeling a little better.
“So nothing to worry about? Promise?” You helped up your pinky, still wearing your rubber gloves. She wrapped her pinky around yours.
“Promise.” You smiled, taking your dirty dishes to the sink.
“Question for you,” you said, giving the dishes a quick wash and leaving them out to dry. She leaned back on the counter with her arms crossed. “Where can I do laundry?”
*
You were walking out of the laundry room with your headphones on and music playing. You were listening to REO Speedwagon. Doing laundry was so necessary, you cleaned the new clothes that you got with Wanda so you weren’t stealing their clothes. You stopped in your tracks sensing people on the couch. Natasha and Wanda were there along with Kate, Yelena, and America but there was someone new. You paused the music and rested the headphones on your shoulders. Taking a steady breath and entering the common space, you tried to make it to your room without being noticed, not ready to meet a new person yet. “So this is the new umhlobo (friend) I’ve heard so much about,” her voice had a heavy accent you weren’t expecting but you didn’t recognize the language she spoke. You turned around and saw the group staring at you.
“Umhlobo,” you repeated back to her. You put the laundry basket down and walked over to them. “What does that mean?” The newcomer smiled. She was wearing a purple tracksuit with a beaded bracelet on her wrist. Her black hair was cut short and the sides shaved.
“It’s Xhosa,” she said. “Umhlobo means friend. I’m Shuri,” you sat down in the space next to Wanda. “I’ve heard a lot about you.” Oh. That was unexpecting. You felt your cheeks burn at the compliment.
“Oh,” you whispered. “I’m Y/n.” The conversation continued as the group caught up with Shuri. Soon Wanda and Natasha left to join the meeting with the others.
“Peter is down to have a little get-together on his floor tonight,” Yelena said, putting her arm around Kate. “I say we borrow some of Tony’s alcohol and have ourselves a real party.”
“Yes!” America exclaimed. Could she drink? She looked at you. “Are you going to join us?” It sounded like fun but you wanted to study.
“I don’t know I should study.” Kate groaned, throwing her head back.
“You’ve been studying all day,” the archer said. Yelena pinched her girlfriend’s side.
“What are you studying for?” Shuri asked. You couldn’t meet the princess’ eyes so you opted to stare at the floor.
“Just a placement test,” you said with a shrug.
“Buuttt,” America said. “She’s super smart and shouldn’t worry because she’s going to do great.” Once again you felt your face up her compliment.
“Would you like some advice?” Shuri asked. You finally looked at her. “Take a break. Research says that taking purposeful breaks from studying refreshes your brain and increases your body’s energy, productivity, and ability to focus.” You blinked at her, surprised by the fact she just spoke.
“Yeah we forgot to mention,” America smiled. “She’s kind of a genius.”
“Oh, okay I guess I’ll join you then,” so you found yourself standing in front of your closet trying to figure out what to wear. This was your first ‘party’ they invited you to. In your mind, it was different than hanging out to watch a movie or dinner. You sat down with a huff. You were being ridiculous, you knew you were. They’ve seen you wearing dirty sweatpants and long sleeve shirts that were too big for you. But now you wanted to wear something nice, cute even. You walked back into your closet. When you stepped out, you were wearing a new pair of jeans and a band T-shirt, it was Queen. You ditched your gloves and put your hair in a ponytail. Maybe you could ask Wanda to cut it. America knocked on your door. You opened it and you watched her eyes scan over your new outfit.
“I like the new look,” she said. “Is the shirt new?”
“Everything is,” you said, playing with the bottom of the shirt. “I got it today with Wanda.”
“I like it,” she smiled. “It suits you,” you tried to keep the blush down but you knew you failed by her smile growing bigger. “Ready to go party?” You nodded, closing the door behind you.
“Are you going to drink?” You asked as you made your way to the elevator. She didn’t say anything. “America! We aren’t legal.” She rolled her eyes with a huff and hit the button.
“You know I’ve been to a universe where we could drink,” the metal doors opened and you stepped in.
“Oh yeah?” You raised an eyebrow at her. “And how was that universe?”
“A mess,” you laughed. The sound echoed off the metal walls. “But it was fun, which is what we are going to have whether you drink or not,” she put her hands up. “And no one will pressure you either. MJ isn’t the biggest drinker.”
“Thank you,” you giggled at her reaction as she was caught off guard by your thanks. “You are just a really good friend,” you sighed. “I know I’m not the easiest person to live with and-”
“I’m going to stop you right there,” she cut you off. “You aren’t a burden to me,” the elevator opened. “Or to any of us.” You smiled, stepping onto Peter’s floor.
“Yeah, I have to keep reminding myself of that.”
*
You opted out of trying alcohol for the night and sipped on a drink Yelena made as you watched them play a drinking game. “Mind if I join you?” Shuri asked. You nodded and she sat down next to you. She changed out of her jumpsuit into black jeans and a white muscle shirt. The only thing that was the same was the bracelet on her wrist.
“Why aren’t you playing?” You asked.
“I have to sit through meetings tomorrow,” she said, leaning back. “That last thing I need is for my brother to make fun of me or worse Okoye,” she shivered. You smiled, taking a sip of your drink.
“Those beads,” you pointed to her wrist. “What are they?”
“These are kimoyo beads,” she took them and handed them to you. They were smooth to the touch but you were surprised how warm they felt. “They are made from vibranium. We are given them at birth and they can be used for surveillance, communication, and medical purposes.”
“That is so cool!” you said, giving the bracelet back. She smiled, putting them back on her wrist. Your attention was drawn back to your friends as America cheered.
“Since you’ve asked me a question, can I ask you one?” You nodded, feeling oddly nervous. “Why are you taking a placement exam?” You sighed, staring into the liquid.
“I’ve never been to school before,” you told her. “Tony offered to homeschool me but I need to see where I’ll place.”
“And you're nervous you won’t perform well,” you nodded. “I have to say I’m impressed but people your age wouldn’t jump at the opportunity to go to school that speaks volumes already,” you gave her a shy smile, trying to hide it behind your glass. “But those tests aren’t a good measure of intelligence, they value memorization and not application.” You stared at her, taking in the information she just gave you. You frowned.
“So are you saying I shouldn’t take the test?” You questioned. She shook her head.
“No, I think you should but don’t stress about it. You're smart.”
“And how do you know that,” you smiled. “We only just met.” She smirked as she stood up.
“It takes a genius to know a genius,” she held up her glass. “Cheers.” You hit your glass against yours. The princess joined your friends in the next round. You smiled, wrapping your hands around the glass. There was a warm feeling blooming in your chest. It was hard to wrap your head around it sometimes that this was your life. You were no longer fighting each day for food or a safe place to sleep. Now you were living and learning and enjoying the cards that life was dealing you with.
“Hey,” you said, walking over to the group. “Can I play?”
“Hell yeah!” Kate cheered. This was your life now. What an amazing experience.

Sandman: It’s just so hard not getting to see my little girl
Otto, who stole some of Spidey’s DNA to combine with his to make a kid to use against him, lex luthor style, but Spidey just kidnapped the kid immediately when he found out and got Matt to cover him legally: I know exactly how you feel, Spiderman won’t even let me have visitations with my kid :(
Sandman:
Sandman: That is not the same thing, our situations are not comparable at all, it’s important to me that you know that
#I like thinking of Otto for situations like that for several reasons#cause I usually think of him with red hair so with him and spidey combining dna you could get a kid with red hair#making may-day even in universes where he doesn’t get with MJ#and it’s a funny situation for me to think of him telling other spideys#‘oh me and MJ? that didn’t end up happening’#‘why do I have this red haired daughter? well funny story actually-‘#also I like to think that as the kid gets older they have to deal with Otto trying to persuade them to become evil#gifting them mechanical spider legs#which is a cool look#also Otto is my favorite villain to imagine as being the only one who knows Peter’s identity#especially in universes where they used to work together#so rather than sounding like an evil villain like he’s trying to be#he’s trying so hard to sound and be Spidey’s worst nightmare#he just ends up sounding like a bitter ex who misses his lab partner and whenever he explains his ‘evil plan’#instead of sounding like an actual supervillain using the hero’s fears of forever being alone after their last relative dies#by dangling blood relative in front of them and threatening it#he just accidentally makes it sound like the kid’s his last shot at getting the ex back#kind of a ‘you can’t leave me for another villain I’m pregnant and it’s yours’ type of thing#idk I just prefer Otto for this#otto octavius#flint marko#doc ock#sandman#Spiderman#spider man#spider-man#peter parker#made up dialogue by yours truly

Spider-powered M.J. x reader
Most people liked to meditate to relive stress. M.J. liked to kick bad guys' asses. As she swung through the city, she knew that Y/n was going to have her behind if she missed movie night Saturday. It was the one night in the week that the young couple didn't go on patrol and instead watched movies until midnight, followed with cuddles, obvi.
M.J. arrived at her desired place, Stark Tower, and placed her hand on the window to have J.A.R.V.I.S. scan it.
"Michelle Jones-Watson, aka, Arachne. Welcome to the 69th floor of Stark Tower", welcomed the A.I.
M.J. opened the window and crawled into Y/n's bedroom that was on the floor that the Winter Soldier and his daughter lived on. Speaking of daughters, Y/n was sitting on her bed, reading a book M.J. let her borrow.
"Sup loser?", said M.J., closing the window.
"Hiya dollface", Y/n answered with a smile. "Your clothes are in the bathroom, waiting."
"Thanks love", M.J. thanked with a kiss on top of Y/n's head and walked into the bathroom.
"How was patrol?", asked Y/n.
"Boring without you. There was a lack of quips and a second generation assassin", M.J. replied, resting her head in Y/n's lap with pjs on.
"Well thanks to HYDRA's form of super soldier serum, I'll be back on missions and on patrol in a week", Y/n reassured.
"Good. How's your father dealing with your broken ankle?", asked M.J.
"Protective. He wouldn't let me walk up the stairs and carried me up instead", Y/n answered, raising her eyebrow.
"Hey, he's your dad. Even though you spent most of your life in HYDRA and can hold your own, he is going to be protective of ya", M.J. said.
"Yes, your girlfriend is right. Listen to her", Bucky said, peering by the doorway.
"Hi, Mister Barnes", M.J. said, sitting up straight.
"How much did you hear?", Y/n asked.
"The end", Bucky answered. "I was just checking in and saying good night. M.J., do you have any wounds hidden?"
"No sir. I'm way too smart to hide them", M.J. answered.
"Peter's smart and HE hides them", Y/n pointed out.
"He's an idiot", Bucky said.
"He's a kid, dad. You can't hate him forever", Y/n reasoned.
"Sam does", Bucky pointed out.
"Birds eat spiders, he's claiming his prey", Y/n said.
"Huh. Didn't think of it like that", Bucky said. "Good night daughter."
"Good night father", Y/n said with a salute.
"Good night Mister Barnes", M.J. said.
"Good night M.J. Sleep tight and don't stay up too late." Bucky closed the door and M.J. slid next to Y/n.
"So, it's your turn for the movie. Whatcha got, hun?", asked M.J.
"I was thinking Lion King", Y/n answered, putting it on.
"The animated ones, right?", M.J. asked.
"Of course. There is no emotion that the original has and the male lions look terrible."
M.J. rested her head on Y/n's chest and pulled the blanket to their legs.
Y/n reached into her snack drawer and pulled out Skittles for the two to share.
"Taste the rainbow, doll?", Y/n offered.
"Haha, very funny. But good pun", M.J. said, accepting the offer.
"I know, my dad says it all the time."
The TV showed a sun rising and the famous opening song played as the 2 semi-heroes enjoyed a lovely movie night Saturday.

The One and Only Spider-Woman pt. 3
A/n: notice how Noa uses less Spanish in this chapter (she's still mourning😭) but anyway enjoy this little snippet, and I'm very sorry for the delay
Ghosts
Screams fill the air the closer I get to the building. Over the radio they made it seem like a minor incident, but it has definitely escalated to something more.
I land softly against the outer window of city hall, sneakily sliding in through a broken one not too far away. All the lights are out. Electric wires hang from the ceiling and send sparks everywhere. I swing myself to the center of the ceiling to get a better view of what's going on.
The sparks give me flashes of the room. There is something in the light. Is that- is that a figure? Another flash to my left this time and the same human figure is shown in the electricity. The next time one of them short circuits it remains behind.
The man materialises before my eyes out of pure energy. He launches a ball of energy my way and I barely have time to move it of its path.
"Woah you're made out of electricity?!" I Marvel, shooting a web the man's way, but it goes straight through him. He growls, disappearing from his place and appearing right next to me.
“Ok teleportation is a thing!”. I move quickly in order to not get electrocuted. I might not have the best mental health but i’m not suicidal anymore.
"Where is the powerplant!" He gruffs. His voice sounds like a mix of all the different Tik Tok voice filters mixed into one. "you won't get hurt if you tell me exactly where it is"
"Uh I'm pretty sure that's not how this works bud". I shoot a web at one of the lower hanging cables. Tugging it I am able to hit the electric man thing. That's his weakness, for now at least.
I use it to my advantage, making a type of spider web out of the available wires to trap him in. Right. Left. No fill that gap before he escapes!.
"Not so tough now are you?" I tease, standing down on the floor to admire my work. He thrashes against the rubber, trying to find a gap wide enough for him to fit through like this. He unfortunately catches something I didn't. A rip in the rubber on one of the wires. He latches onto the live wire and begins to charge. A smirk plays on his lips and it's only now that I understand my mistake.
Oh no.
An explosion as he takes out the remaining energy in the building. His haunting yellow eyes lock onto mine and he lunges he's forward. He has enough energy now to be solid, being able to properly hit me as well as send bolts of electricity at me.
He manages to get the better of me and pins me right to the floor. I squirm under him, but he's draining me. I can feel my energy begin to deplete and I panic. I no longer care about turning the tables on him, but just getting out of here alive. I try to kick and pull away, but my energy is being litterally ripped away from me. It scares me more than I have been in a long while.
Suddenly he is being pulled backwards as someone else loons over him. The visitor stands between me and Mr sparkles as I try to regain some color on my skin.
Light Headed and disoriented it takes me a minute to get to my feet again. When I do the two stranger are already locked in battle. I get a better look on the new addition to the fight and have to double take. A spider symbol displayed in the back of their denim jacket. They too look different and out of place in reality but I don't question it as they get close enough again for me to join in again.
"Where did you come from?" I question as we both continue to attack our opponent.
"Spider punk at your service mate, but you can- oh fuck-" he dodges a bolt of lightening, "you can call me Hobie".
"Spider-woman, and I asked where you came from not your name burro"
"Got some spark don't you?"
"The only spark you have to worry about is this idiot we're supposed to be fighting!"
It takes the both of us a good ten minutes to neutralise the man in a sort of capsule thing that 'Hobie' just happened to have. Both of us are soaked from having activated the sprinklers, and our masks off because we'll oxygen is a vital part of being alive.
"Now that we can actually get acquainted". Hobie sticks his hand out for me to shake, leaning casually against the red glowing enclosure as if it definitely could not break at any given moment. "Hobart brown, but as previously stated please call me Hobie”. I take his hand with an unsure chuckle and a raised eyebrow.
"Noa O'Hara" I shoot back. To this his eyes grow slightly. Unfortunately he regains his expression as fast as it had changed before.
"You don't say? I happen to know someone with a very similar name". He's joking around now and I can't help but fall into this playfully banter with him.
"Could say the same to you man. I mean you are stealing the nickname of a famous idol". I decide not to tell him anything as his expression turns confused. If he doesn’t know who Jung Hoseok is in this day and age, I won't indulge him.
His watch thing on his wrist beeps loudly bringing us both back to reality. He looks at it for only a moment before giving a deep sigh and letting his arm fall limp at his side.
"Well I best be off, but I don't see why you can't come along" he jokes. Its an invitation as he opens a hexagonal portal to the gods know where. He waits for me expectantly.
Do I want to go?. I mean the idea is very intriguing, but it may cost me more than it's worth. I live on my own now and I have other responsibilities. But something tells me to go with him. It's not my spider sense, so maybe intuition.
"You coming mate?" He asks, having watched me internally struggle for a minute. It reminds him a lot of a certain someone that makes the same face when their mental cogs are turning.
I don't say anything out loude, scared that I'll let something out that I shouldn't. Instead I nod, confirming my ticket to the other side of the portal.
Hobie smirks, swinging the red capsule over his shoulder and signalling for me to enter first. Hesitantly I take a step forward. Reaching my hand forward, I try to feel the portal thing. It changes color, going from a foreign kind of red to one that you see more commonly around this world. It's not too much of a difference but enough for me to pick it up.
"It won't bite" Hobie jokes. I send him a playful glare. His hand goes up in surrender. One step, and I find myself flying through.
The ride is exhilarating. A rush as cold wind blows against me as I wiz past blurs. Glimpses into different places that I can't reach. I seem to be in a kind of tunnel, like one of those big water slides at a pool. I slow down just in time to find my footing and step out of a similar hole in space that i originally entered.
I find myself in a kind of elevator platform thing, and by the way my curls stand straight up on their ends i can tell i am upside down. Hobie apears seconds after myself and smirks at my disorientation.
“Yeah first times can be a bit of a bugger. You’ll feel good as new by tea time” he snickers. I roll my eyes, but the prospect of not feeling like my insides are in knots makes me smile a bit.
When my head stops spinning enough, I am able to finally get a good look of the place. We seem to be in some sort of skyscraper as we ascend quickly. Capsule-like vehicles float through traffic instead of driving on the ground, but this fact allows for so much more green than i am used to seeing on a day to day basis. Everything looks so- futuristic and advanced and it makes me wonder if this place is supposed to be in the future or something.
"Better put this on?" He says handing me a sort of bracelet. I look at it for a second. It's like one of those Snapp on wristbands you would get in goodie bags as a kid.
The platform stops moving and the door opens up. I gawk at the amount of people in this huge ass room. The architecture is well made use for as the criss crossing columns are used as paths to different locations instead of just support. Variation upon Variation of the same spider symbol is displayed proudly on suites.
“What is this place?” i ask my guide. My eyes dont stop anywhere for too long, quickly getting attention caught on something else and following that for a few seconds before the cycle starts all over again.
“Welcome to the Spider society” he anounces spreading his arms out wide in welcome. He greets a few that send a hello his way but continues to march forward. I, not knowing where to go, follow him blindly.
“The what?”
“Spider society. All of us are variants of one another from different universes”
“So same character different font?”
“Something like that yeah, some of us are Peters others MJs or Gwens and so forth. But rubbish to try and memorize all the names”
My mind begins to spiral with the possibilities. I dont even notice when Hobie takes me down a more private area until it gets too dark for the rest of the place.
Rows and rows of red enclosures like the one Hobie drags with him stand before us and it makes me freeze up for a moment. Hobie notices he's lost me and sighs when he sees the expression on my face.
"I know it looks bad, but Miguel thinks it's the best way of keeping them here until we can send these tests back to their universes" he explains. But now my face is paler than before.
That is his name.
It can't be him right? No way. It's just a weird coincidence. I saw him die and there is no way papà is Spiderman in another another universe, he hated me for a while!
"You alright there?" Hobie asks. He's thinking I'm right weird but can't blame me. He doesn't like this place all that much and he hasn't been here too long and he knows what it's like to be here and discover everything for the first time.
"Yeah" I push, trying to clear my dry throat, "yeah yeah I'm fine". He doesn't buy it, but nods anyway.
He motions for me to follow him once again once he's done securing the bad guy. I do so, not really seeing what else I can do.He leads me even further down this path. It keeps getting darker and darker. We pass a spider sort of contraption that I watch take one of the red capsule and make it disappear. Curiosity takes over anxiety and I start asking questions like normal again.
My guide does his best to answer all the inquiries. I'm not disappointed when he says he's not sure. He is honest enough to tell me about his short time as part of this league so I don't mind the gaps he leaves in the answers.
"Where are we going anyways? I ask him finally. He looks at me and then back on the path. I figure he's either hiding something or worried about the same thing. I can't tell what now but hopefully I can figure it out sooner rather than later.
"To meet the boss. He'll give you a better run through this whole operation than I can" he explains easily. He doesn't seem to be lying so I trust him for now. Innocent until proven guilty right?
At the end of the hall we come to a big room with high ceilings that seems to go on forever in the dark. High above us is a platform that glows from the yellow light emitting holographic screens.
A man stands between all of them. Ha stands like a statue watching his machines. He actually looks like a looming shadow with red streaks here and there. Something familiar is about him, but i ignore it to the best of my ability.
No this does not look like that time papa told me to wait in the patroller as he went to investigate something at some corporate office. No, his stance is not papa’s ‘im done with this’ stance. And no i would definitely not mistake this strange man i definitely don't trust at the moment for my papà in a crowd.
“Oi! Miguel, got the new recruit!” Hobie calls out. Both our hearts drop a bit, although his does slightly more. He knows who i am while i am just praying to the gods above that he is not a variant of that someone.
The platform begins to lower closer to the ground. It moves to the pace of a snail and when i look to my companion he just gives me this look begging me not to say anything about it. I decide to just roll my eyes instead. It really is dumb but then again dont want to be kicked out on my first day right.
The platform comes to a stop. His back is still to the two of us. My breath still in my chest as the air grows thick. Is it just me having a hard time breathing? He turns almost dramatically towards us. He's still in the dark. A step forward. My breath hitches.
Translations:
Burro: dumby
Papà: dad
A/n: cliff hangers are the best aren't they? I feel evil writing one for you guys but I promise you'll get the next part soon! Also I genuinely thought of jhope for a second in the theaters when I went to see the movie for the first time and heard the nickname "Hobie" no joke 💀.

Lightning Bug - Chapter 7
Tumblr media
Previous Chapter // Master List
Warning: religious trauma, mention of an exorcism, reader needs a hug
Word Count: 2.5
Kate groaned as America climbed over the couch and kicked her. “Sorry,” she said, getting comfortable under the throw blanket.
“You could sit on the couch like a normal person,” America smiled at the archer.
“I’m not a normal person.” The teen said. Kate rolled her eyes.
“Don’t I know it.” Yelena sat down next to Kate with a bowl of caramel popcorn. The Black said it was the perfect movie snack, a little sweet and salty. It was movie night and all the Young Avengers as Tony called them gathered (the ones that were in the tower) on Peter’s floor. The Young Avengers plus Ned and Mj but they were at the tower so much no one batted an eye when they were walking the hall.
“What are we feeling like?” Ned asked, flipping through the various streaming services.
“Action,” MJ suggested, unwrapping a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup and threw it in that air, catching it in her mouth. The Black Widow groaned.
“We see enough action as is.” It was true. Besides whenever they did watch an action movie, the Avengers found themself critiquing the fight scenes instead of watching it for the plot.
“Musical?” Peter suggested. America shook her head.
“We just watched Hairspray.” Kate sighed, throwing her head back.
“Horror,” her friends looked at one another and no one objected. “Put on The Conjuring.” Ned nodded, queuing up the movie.
“Wait!” America yelled. The sudden sound caused Ned to jump and drop the remote. It landed on the ground with a crash. The back opened and the batteries scattered to the ground. “Opps. Sorry Ned.”
“It’s no biggie. Just gave me a small heart attack.” He and Peter began to look for the batteries.
“Why the sudden outburst, Lil Liberty,” America rolled her eyes at the nickname.
“Should we invite Y/n?” She asked. The mention of the newest addition to the tower made everyone freeze.
“Mr. Stark said she had a rough day.” Peter said. She had a bad day because of Stark, Kate thought. But she did seem in a better mood at dinner. “Do you think she’d want to join us?” The archer shrugged.
“Can’t hurt to ask,” Kate stood up. “I’ll go ask.” She shoved some popcorn in her mouth before heading off to her floor. The worst that could happen was she said no. She felt horrible for the teen today. When Natasha came back telling everyone she ran away, Kate felt her stomach drop. It was like she was on a rollercoaster, going up and down and up and down. Even FRIDAY didn’t even know where she went so they were required to find her the old fashion way, search known places she would likely visit. In the end, Kate was glad she was home.
*
You were placing the few books you owned on the bookshelf you and Tony built. To anyone that walked into your room, it looked like a normal bookshelf. But the bookshelf had FRIDAY’s interface built into it which was connected to an app on your phone. It could keep track of what books you had to prevent double buying and it kept the progress of each book you were reading. “Kate Bishop is at your door,” The AI said.
“Thank you, FRIDAY.” You said, putting on your gloves and walking to the door. “Hi,” you greeted as you opened the door.
“Hey, how are you?” She asked.
“Pretty good actually.” You answered honestly. Kate smiled.
“Good, a bunch of us are watching a movie and we are wondering if you want to join us?” Your eyes went wide.
“You want me to join you guys,” she nodded. “Why?” The question seemed to startle the brunette in front of you.
“Because you are our friend and friends invite friends to hang out.” Oh. That made sense. “So, do you want to hang out?” You nodded with a smile.
“Yeah, I’d love to.” You stepped out of your room and closed the door behind you. “Who's going to be there?” You asked, following Kate to the elevator.
“It’s on Peter’s floor,” you haven’t seen the excited teen since that night you ran into him. “So it’s him, his girlfriend, MJ, and his friend, Ned.” You nodded, if they were anything like Peter it was going to be a long night. “Then me, Yelena, and America.”
“Cool.” You said, rubbing your hands on your shorts. You were a little nervous, a little excited. It was a weird feeling running through you. The metal doors opened and Kate stepped onto Peter’s floor.
“MJ, Ned met Y/n, Y/n met the other people that aren’t Avengers but are here all the time.” You gave them a small wave. MJ rolled her eyes at Kate’s jab.
“Your life would be colorless without me in it.” You smiled, sitting down in the empty space between Kate and America.
“Hi again Peter.” He seemed surprise that you remembered him. He waved.
“Do you want some popcorn?” Yelena asked, passing a bowl to you. You looked into the bowl.
“What is that?” You’ve had popcorn before. At special events at Lucia’s store, she had a popcorn machine. This wasn’t popcorn.
“It’s caramel popcorn,” the Russian said. “Instead of butter, they use caramel.” Oh. You’ve had caramel, sometimes Annie would drizzle it on your hot chocolate. You picked up a piece and ate it. It was delicious.
“That’s really good.” You said, taking a few more pieces.
“Have you had a Reese’s?” MJ asked you. You shook your head. She tossed you an unopened candy. Chocolate and peanut butter. “You aren’t allergic, are you?”
“No..” You said slowly.
“That did not sound convincing,” Ned laughed. You smiled, opening the candy. You weren’t allergic to peanut butter. A peanut butter sandwich was a staple in your childhood, it was a food you lived on.
“This is my favorite,” MJ tossed you another one.
“Try this.” Peter handed you a red candy. Licorice, it read.
“If you like this I’ll be amazed.” America said. You opened the candy and smelt it. It was sweet. You took a tentative bite and your face scrunched up at your distaste of it. The group laughed.
“That’s not good,” You swallowed the piece in your mouth and Yelena handed you a bottle of water.
“Enough with the sweets or she’s going to be sick.” Yelena said. “Let’s start the movie.”
“We are watching a horror film,” America whispered to you. “Is that okay?” You nodded as Ned pressed play. Horror wasn’t a genre you gravitated towards but you’ve read your fair share of horror novels. Stephen King. Shirley Jackson. Your favorite was The Shining.
The movie began to play. The ominous music filled the quiet floor. The couples around you began to cuddle up with each other. You didn’t miss the way Ned gagged. You could count the number of movies you’ve seen on one hand. Movies were available at Lucia’s bookstore and the shelters you visited but movies weren’t your thing. “See always trust a dog.” Yelena mumbled. You chuckled. It was different from watching a story play out on screen then in your head. You didn’t dislike it, it was just different. The movie was scary as it followed a married couple trying to help a big family with a paranormal problem. You enjoyed. You made a mental night to check the horror books the tower had. The genre was interesting.
But it took a turn. Ed had to perform an exorcism on the mother to rid the demon that possessed her. You kept your eyes glued to the screen as the familiar Latin phrases were chanted in the room. You dug your fingers into your palm to keep you grounded, to stay in the room. It was so hard to keep your mind on the movie and not when your parents dragged you to the church. They forced you on your knees as the Latin phrases were screamed at you. Excorizamute, omnis immundus … omins legio diabolic  … Humilione sub potent…
“That was an actual scary horror movie.” Ned said once the credits started rolling.
“That clapping bit was freaky!” Peter said. You agreed that part made you jump.
“There are a few more movies we can watch the second one.” Kate said. “Did you like it?” She asked you. You nodded.
“It was good. A little inaccurate.” You added.
“Isn’t it based on a true story?” MJ questioned. You shrugged, playing with a string from the blanket America was using.
“What was not accurate about it?” America asked. You didn’t answer right away. You should have just kept your mouth shut.
“Exorcisms,” you said. “They usually happen at a holy place like a church not a house.” You sighed. “They are a last resort. Most people start with medication if no improvement is made then a priest is brought in.” You explained. The group was silent.
“How do you know that?” Yelena asked slowly like she was afraid to know the answer.
“My parents were really religious,” you kept the truth locked deep inside you. “Let’s start the second movie.” You said desperately trying to get the attention off of you. Ned looked around the group, no one said anything. He took the silence as confirmation to start the second film. You sat back with your arms crossed. You caught America sending you a smile. You forced a smile back.
*
“That was weird, right?” Kate asked as she pulled back the covers of the bed. Yelena stepped out of the bathroom, brushing her hair. Kate tapped the spot in front of her and the Black Widow sat down in front of her girlfriend, her back to Kate’s front. The archer took the brush and began to brush the blonde hair. It was a red flag when the young girl began to talk about exorcisms like she’s had first hand experience on the matter. Yelena sighed, enjoying the feeling of Kate’s hands braiding her hair.
“It was worrying,” Yelena finally said. “I’ll talk to Natasha about it tomorrow,” Yelena heard Kate sigh. “What is it, dorogoy?” The Russian asked, turning to face her.
“I just worry about her. It seems everyday we learn something more heartbreaking.” Kate gently pushed on Yelena’s shoulder for her to look forward.
“We’ll keep her safe,” Yelena said. “She’s not alone anymore.” The Russian felt Kate’s lips press a soft kiss on her shoulder. Yelena knew they couldn’t keep her safe from her mind.
*
Yelena woke up early. She untangled herself from Kate and left her room. She found her sister on the couch, typing at her laptop. “Are you not going for a run?” Yelena asked, as she sat down next to her. Natasha shook her head.
“I have to get this done for Maria.” She answered, not taking her eyes away from the screen.
“So do you have time to talk?” Natasha immediately closed her laptop and gave Yelena her full attention. The blonde was grateful for this time with her sister. For years the two Russian sisters were separated but now they were back together. She knew her life could be incredibly different.
“What’s going on?” Yelena looked toward Y/n’s door.
“What do you know about her parents?” She asked. Natasha looked at her sister, trying to decode the real reason she asked.
“Not much,” The redhead answered. “We found an article that may have been about her family.” Yelena raised her eyebrows.
“May have?” She questioned.
“FRIDAY found no record of her existing, not even a birth certificate. The article said a fire killed them and it appears that she may have been in the house but survived.” Natasha explained. “Her father was a priest, a popular one. What is this about?”
“It was movie night and we watched The Conjuring. At the end of the movie there was an exorcism. She said she enjoyed the movie but said the exorcism part was not accurate,” she watched the realization wash over her sister. It was haunting. Her voice was so clear and so unlike any other time she’s spoken. “Siestra, the way she talked about it made it seem like she’s been so close to one.” Natasha didn’t say anything as she let what Yelena said sit with her.
“I’ll talk to her,” the older Black Widow stood up. “Her parents are dead, they can’t hurt her anymore.” Yelena wasn’t so sure about that. The blonde grabbed her sister’s arm, stopping her.
“We all know that death doesn’t erase the pain.” Yelena was referring to the man behind the Red Room. He was dead. The Red Room fell from the sky. It was over, done, and young girls were safe. But the memories were still there. Natasha grabbed her hand.
“You are right. But death is finite and the pain can begin to heal.”
*
You were startled to see Natasha when you opened your door. “Hi.” You said. She gave you a smile.
“Where are you off to this morning?” She asked.
“Oh I was going to go see Annie. I barely said two words to her yesterday.” You told the Black Widow. “Is that okay?” You added. You were going to tell someone just so they knew you didn’t run away.
“Of course it is. Can we talk? It won’t take long.” You nodded, stepping out of the way so she could enter your room. You kept the door open and sat at the edge of the bed. “Are you okay?” Natasha asked, sitting down next to you. You looked at the red head.
“I’m fine.” You said. She didn’t say anything waiting for you to continue. You were fine. It was the truth. Besides.. “Is this about last night?” You asked. You shouldn’t have said anything but your mind was scattered therefore you didn’t have time to process the consequences of what you were saying. You just spoke.
“Yelena said you said something that worried her.” You sighed. “You can talk about your parents if you need to.”
“They died in a fire,” you told her. “What more needs to be said?” You asked.
“Just because someone that hurt you is dead doesn't erase the pain they caused.” Your heart began to pound. The organ was beating against your ribs. Thud. Thud. Thud.
“I don’t think I’m ready to tell you about them,” you answered honestly. To tell them about your parents and your brother would mean you would need to tell them what you are, what you are capable of. You looked at Natasha and you weren’t surprised to see a smile.
“When are you ready we’ll be here to listen,” she stood up. “Tell Annie we all say hi.”
“I will.” She left your room. You fell on your back staring up at the ceiling. You let the beating of your heart settle down. You didn’t know how to talk about your parents. Wasn’t the point of a mom and dad to love their child? To keep them safe. To protect them. They didn’t do that for you. You wished they did, your life would be so different if they just loved you.

why does it matter so much to you if people ship some dudes from spiderverse, genuine question. i swear to god i see more complaining about mlm ships on this website than i do people even being annoying about shipping them
I’m just a hater and a comic book fan. Also I think it’s weird and annoying that people cannot view media outside of the shipping lenses. I literally just wanna have normal discussions and see cool art of one of my favorite films, but all this makes the tag unnavigable. So I’m just like. Bitter about it.

if i did a reread of the walking dead and wrote an essay on how aegon ii and carl are doomed to be the last man standing by their narratives, and what starts out as a sort of cool & nifty super power of always surviving turns into this horrific curse where everyone they know is dying around them & sometimes it’s their fault & sometimes it’s not but either way they can’t ever stop it until they’re sitting at the ending with nothing but their lone daughter to protect but so broken they can no longer connect to her and then their story abruptly ends-
would that be like the Most stupid, nerdy thing i have ever done in my life or
#valyrianscrolls#aegon the usurper#carl grimes#i associate the phrase ‘last man standing’ so heavily with carl that i used it to describe aegon and my brain short circuited#also…something something ‘if we forgive our fathers what else is left’ and ‘you can never escape your mothers blood’#re: carl’s life going so badly bc of his father’s vicious & world destroying love. and viserys destroying aegon’s life bc of his own lack of#love for aegon. completely accident. neither viserys or rick set out to create a worse world and yet.#and lori and alicent standing like ghosts over their babies. what do you do when your mother’s misery in her marriage is the reason your#life went off the rails. how do you hate her for it yet how do you love her.#rick ultimately dying at the hands of one of his victims. viserys rotting to deal surrounding by the children he emotionally abandoned.#THERES SOMETHING HERE#ROBERT KIRKMAN I KNOW YOU WERE AT CONS WITH GEORGE DID U EVER HANG OUT A BIT. O-k! I’ve uploaded the first chapter of the fake dating Miguel/MJ focused (but poly endgame), Emergency Girlfriend Program!
Excerpt:
“Babe.”
Miguel and Rod turned to look at the redhead now by them. Her dress was a darker blue than her eyes and her red hair was piled up in a delicate curly bun. His eyes unwillingly drifted down her collarbone, following the freckles to her v neck cleavage before he looked back up. Her hand was along his arm. She smiled at him good naturedly. He lightly frowned.
“Sorry but I have dibs on this one.” She lightly tugged at Miguel’s arm. “Mr. O’Hara promised we’d go sightseeing after the last panel.” She gave his bicep a playful squeeze and smiled brightly at Rod. “You understand.”
“Oh, please, don’t let me stop you.”
“Thanks.” She looped her arm around Miguel’s more comfortably. “Come on, honey.”
Miguel walked out of the main hall with his brain sputtering. When they were a good distance away from prying ears and eyes, he dropped her arm.
“What do you think you’re doing?”
The redhead smiled. “Helping you.”

Read on (ao3)!
