Yashahime Translation: Da Vinci Magazine December 2020 Edition

“Hanyou No Yashahime” Tripartite Cast Talk
Matsumoto Sara X Komatsu Mikako X Tadokoro Azusa
Inuyasha and Kagome’s daughter and Sesshomaru’s two daughters play an active role in “Hanyou No Yashahime”. As an original anime with no original work (translator’s note: As in not an adaptation of something like a manga or light novel), the subject is the next generation of “Inuyasha” done in the same style. Being “Inuyasha” fans themselves, we had the three lead voice actresses talk about the charm of the series.
The main character design was done by Takahashi Rumiko!
Towa
A 14-year-old middle school girl. 10 years ago, she time traveled from the Feudal Era to the Modern Era and became the adopted daughter of Kagome’s little brother, Souta. Upon reuniting with her younger twin sister, Setsuna, after she time travels to the Modern Era with Moroha, Towa decides to return to the Feudal Era. She is Sesshomaru’s daughter.
Setsuna
14 years old. Towa’s younger twin sister. A member of the demon slayers led by Kohaku. She has lost her memories of her childhood and is unable to fall asleep. She has the gold rainbow pearl in her left eye. While she does not believe Towa is her older twin sister, she travels with her as she tries to take back Setsuna’s memories and sleep.
The 3 of you reacted shocked with “What you mean daughters?!”
Moroha
Commonly known as “Monster Killer Moroha”. A 14-year-old bounty hunter. When she puts on rouge stored in a shell with the red rainbow pearl on it, she becomes “The Country Destroying Beniyasha” and goes on a rampage. While she is Inuyasha and Kagome’s daughter, she does not know her parents and has lived mostly on her own apparently.
Komatsu: When the work was announced, the world was shocked like “Sesshomaru has a daughter?!” and we were the same. When I opened the audition documents, it was written that the setting takes place over 10 years after the conclusion of the original work and that Setsuna, who I was auditioning for, is Sesshomaru’s daughter. I thought “What does this mean?” and reflexively grabbed the last volume of the manga.
Matsumoto: I was handed Takahashi Rumiko-sensei’s character design and a simple correlation diagram. In regards to Towa, who I auditioned for, it was also written that all that was known was that she is Sesshomaru’s daughter. I was given lines without knowing the context or anything so I wondered what to do. However, at the same time, I was so happy to the point that I was like “The “Inuyasha” world is coming back!”
Tadokoro: I completely freaked out (laughs). Also, my manager knew I was big fan of “Inuyasha” and calmly told me before I looked at the audition documents “Azusa, you absolutely can’t miss out on this. This a huge opportunity.”
Komatsu: A lot of pressure!
Tadokoro: Then when I looked at the documents, I saw that Moroha, who I was auditioning for, was the daughter of Inuyasha and Kagome. After getting excited like “They had a child~!”, I saw Towa and Setsuna and screamed “I will be upset if they’re not XX’s children!” (translator’s note: they’re referring to the mother)
Komatsu and Matsumoto: I know!
Tadokoro: As a fan, I worried endlessly but as a voice actress, I thought I couldn’t miss out on this. However, when I went to the studio audition, I was told “Keep the base but try to say these lines a little more like a middle-aged man”. I became flustered like “Even though she’s a 14-year-old girl?” … I felt like I didn’t respond properly and was really down going home.
Komatsu: Me too. Maybe it was because I was pulling too strongly from Sesshomaru’s image but I was told “Not only coolness but we would also like for you to show the cuteness of a 14-year-old” and I couldn’t make the switch the very well. I didn’t get the reaction that I got the part at all.
Matsumoto: I over considered the setting of (Towa) wearing a boy’s uniform and I was told “Don’t make her a boy”. After that no matter how many retries I did, the direction I took didn’t match up… I cried a lot when I got home like “I totally bombed it”. That moment, I realized that I had really wanted the part and was surprised. “Inuyasha” was a work that was more special to me than I thought.
Overcoming different boundaries, their feelings melt together
Komatsu: For me, “Inuyasha” was also a textbook on love. Especially the relationship between Inuyasha, Kagome, and Kikyou. It’s a little hard for kids to understand and I thought, “Why does Kikyou always get in the way?” and “Inuyasha too, make up your mind” but in a certain scene, Kagome asks Inuyasha “I… What exactly am I to you?”. In between the feelings of it can’t be helped that he overlaps her face with Kikyou’s and this has nothing to do with her, she properly checked what her existence meant to him. Seeing that, I realized. Not only in love but that’s important in life in general as well.
Tadokoro: It’s so cool isn’t it? She acknowledged all her feelings of jealousy and hate towards Kikyou and still saved her on top of that. She showed us her resolve to properly face her heart and Kikyou and accept them. It was so cool that I cried. Then when I became an adult, I came to understand Kikyou’s feelings and it hurt.
Matsumoto: Well she was also a victim… I think when you read “Inuyasha”, you become emotionally attached to each individual character because depictions that give you a sense that they’re “alive” are inlaid in all sorts of places. For example, the scene in volume 1 where Kagome offers food to Inuyasha whom she had just met. While Inuyasha makes his wariness known, he takes a bite of the radish in the next frame. I always laugh like “Even though you say it’s annoying, you’re still eating it!” but at the same time I feel that it’s really “like” him. From those ordinary depictions, over time we accept “something” without realizing it. That accumulation turns into a big emotion that overflows when you get to the important scenes.
Komatsu: At times when those complexly wrapped emotions sublimate, even sad endings become beautiful. For example, Kagura. Even though she was born from Naraku, she was guided to good through Inuyasha and the others who were supposed to be her enemy. Kagome and Kikyou’s relationship too but ally or enemy, good or evil, all sorts of borders are crossed and seeing drawings of humans and demons coming together I think is the charm of “Inuyasha”.
We haven’t been told the answers to the mysteries
Matsumoto: Continuing onward to “Hanyou no Yashahime”, the character I play, Towa, passed through space-time and got sent to the Modern Era at age 4. However, possibly because she was raised by Kagome’s little brother, Souta, even though she is Sesshomaru’s daughter, I feel like she’s also similar to Kagome.
Komatsu: While blood inheritance is important, the person who raised you has a big influence as well. Also, what environment you were raised in. Setsuna lost her childhood memories due to certain circumstances. So of course, she doesn’t remember her older twin sister, Towa, whom she got separated from at 4 years old. Due to that hole and being raised in an environment where you could be killed by anyone at any time, she gives off an air of not allowing others to get close to her. But just when you think that, there are times where you can feel that she’s actually kind and that makes it heartrending.
Matsumoto: Feeling she (Towa) needs to fill in the 10-year void with Setsuna who became like that, the highlight is seeing their relationship change as Towa closes the gap between them. Add Moroha in and there’s a lot of chattering.
Tadokoro: Moroha speaks in a vulgar manner (translator’s note: it actually translates to abusive language but abusive didn’t sound right to me) but in reality, I have a feeling that she truly enjoys traveling with the two of them. To her, those two are probably the first friends she has ever had. That form is so precious and I feel lonely when I wonder what sort of environment she grew up in. I wonder why she’s desperately earning money by slaying demons. We were only told who she was raised by but at this time, we have not been told things like happened to Inuyasha and Kagome.
Matsumoto: This includes who Towa and Setsuna’s mother is. This is something fans have been wondering the most but the answers will be revealed eventually and I have faith that this work will properly continue on what was drawn in “Inuyasha”.
Tadokoro: That’s why we would like everyone to watch over them until the very end and love the 3 Yashahimes as they survive with each of their individual strengths.
Komatsu: While there are a lot of cheerful episodes, there will be times when the inlaid depictions within those episodes will be collected in an instant which I think people will enjoy. For that, we will give it our all!
We Asked Takahashi-sensei!
Q: What did you especially focus on when doing the character design?
A: Series composition writer Sumisawa (Katsuyuki) requested me to draw the image of Towa as a white Sesshomaru and Setsuna as a black Sesshomaru. Upon reading the scenario, I designed them incorporating their father’s facial look. Moroha was the same, being Inuyasha and Kagome’s child. As such, I made it so that Inuyasha’s mischievousness came through.

Q: What did you pay special attention to when designing the characters?
A: I was told by Sumisawa-san, who is in charge of the Series Composition, to give the impression of a light Sesshomaru (Towa) and a dark Sesshomaru (Setsuna), and after reading the script, I incorporated traces of their father into their designs. The same goes for Moroha. She is Inuyasha and Kagome's child, so with her I tried to give the impression of a mischievous Inuyasha.*

Hanyou no Yashahime Cast Interview

Inuyasha and Kagome's daughter, and Sesshomaru's two daughters, take center stage in "Hanyou no Yashahime." This anime original series has been getting a lot of attention, as it depicts the next generation of "Inuyasha." We asked the three lead voice actors, who are fans of "Inuyasha" themselves, to talk about the appeal of the series.**

Moroha:  Also known by the name of "Moroha the Demon Killer." She is a 14 year old bounty hunter. When she applies the red rouge, found within the shell that has a red pearl in it, she becomes "Beniyasha - The Destroyer," and goes on a rampage. Though she is Inuyasha and Kagome's daughter, it appears that she lived mostly on her own, without knowing anything about her parents.***
Setsuna: She is 14 years old and is Towa's younger twin sister. She is one of the demon slayers, which is under the leadership of Kohaku. She has lost the memories of her early childhood and cannot sleep. A gold pearl resides in her left eye. Though she doesn't believe that Towa is her sister, she works together with Towa, who tries to regain Setsuna's memories and sleep.
Towa: She is a 14 year old junior high school student. 10 years ago she traveled through time from the Warring States Era to the modern era, and became the adopted daughter of Kagome's younger brother, Souta. She reunites with her younger sister, Setsuna, who traveled through time to the present era together with Moroha, and decides to return to the Warring States Era. She is Sesshomaru's daughter.
Translation Notes:
* Takahashi-sensei says after she read the シナリオ (shinario), in Japanese, "scenario" can mean "script, screenplay, or scenario." Also, with the word "mischevious," the Japanese used is ヤンチャ (yancha), which can also mean "impish, prankish, wicked, etc."
** The Japanese word that gets used here is 活躍 (katsuyaku), which can mean "to participate actively, to play an active role." So, between this word use and knowing the series' main focus is on the girls, I decided to go with the translation "take center stage."
*** In the official subs they went with "Demon Killer," so that's what I went with here too. But 化け (bake) can mean a variety of things, "goblin; apparition; monster; ghost; phantom; spectre; specter." The Wikipedia page on the term is actually quite good (it has proper sources and what not). So this is what the Wikipedia page briefly says about the term:

The other thing to note here is that when talking about Moroha's situation, of not knowing her parents and having lived mostly on her own, the grammar ~らしい (~rashii) is used at the end. In this situation, this grammatical term indicates gossip or hearsay.
Outside of that, the only thing to mention in this part of the interview is that when I use "travel through time," the actual Japanese being used is "timeslip." I just went with "travel through time" because it tends to sound more natural and flows better.
My Thoughts:
So with Moroha it *appears* that she has lived mostly on her own. This makes me think that there is likely more going on here (like, for example, those theories that Moroha was raised by Kouga). For all we know though, it could just be them referencing Myouga's presence or something though.
Another interesting thing, that is more of a translation note, but when talking about the series being an original anime, they note that is a “has no source material original anime.” In English that just sounds super repetitive, since original anime is enough to indicate that it isn’t based on a pre-existing source material, but yeah. I figured I’d mention that distinction.
Anyway, I've also been working on the interview itself and will get that up, probably sometime tomorrow. But I just wanted to get these two parts up and I figured I'd separate them from the actual interview, since they aren't really part of the interview and don't necessarily tell anything too new.

More Hanyou no Yashahime Info
So, for the morbidly curious, yes, Inuyasha is getting an anime-original sequel this fall about his and Sesshoumaru’s daughters called “Hanyou no Yashahime”.  There’s an official website now and everything.  There’s just basic information up there now, but here’s what it says:

Time has passed since Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru’s story, and the brothers’ daughters now open the door on a new legend.
Synopsis:
Towa, Setsuna, and Moroha are hanyou girls who carry the blood of youkai and humans.
Towa and Setsuna are twin sisters who were separated during a forest fire when they were young.  Towa escaped through a space-time tunnel in the Time Tree (Jidaiju) and traveled through time from the Sengoku era to the present.  She was raised by the Higurashi family related to Kagome, growing into a middle-schooler excelling in the martial arts.  Meanwhile, her younger sister Setsuna who remained in the Sengoku era became a youkai hunter under Kohaku, who had become leader of the youkai hunters.  Moroha is Inuyasha and Kagome’s daughter.  She works as a bounty hunter, slaying youkai under the name “Moroha the Monster Killer” (Bakegoroshi no Moroha).
It’s been 10 years since Towa and Setsuna were separated.  The space-time tunnel in the Time Tree has reopened.  Setsuna appears in the present and reunites with Towa, but for some reason Setsuna has forgotten Towa.
Joined by Moroha who came to the present along with Setsuna, Towa and the others become the “Half Breed Demon Princesses” (Hanyou no Yasha-hime) and run amok through both the present and Sengoku era!
Higurashi Towa (14 years old)
“I’m absolutely going to retrieve Setsuna’s stolen dreams!”
A modern girl living in the Reiwa era (2019-present).  A 14 year-old middle-schooler.  10 years ago she traveled to the present era through the Time Tree tunnel.  She was rescued by Kagome’s brother Souta and raised as his daughter.  She excels at martial arts, and due to fights with bullies has transferred schools several times.  She is currently enrolled at St. Gabriel’s School for Girls.  After Setsuna and Moroha come to the present and meet her, she returns to the Sengoku era to retrieve Setsuna’s sleep.  She wears a male uniform because it’s easier to fight in.  She is actually Sesshoumaru’s daughter, who lives in the Sengoku era.
Setsuna (14 years old)
“I don’t know you... if you don’t want to be killed, stay away!”
14 years old.  She joins the youkai hunters headed by Kohaku and works as a youkai hunter.  In actuality, when she was 4 years old she was separated from her older sister Towa, and 10 years later she and Moroha travel through time to the present.  There she reunites with Towa.  However, because her sleep was stolen by the Dream Butterfly (Yume no Gochou), she has no memories of her childhood.  She doesn’t believe Towa when she says she’s her older sister.  Towa and Moroha return to the Sengoku era to retrieve her stolen sleep, but...  She is thought to have inherited her calm and level-headed personality from Sesshoumaru.
Moroha (14 years old)
“When I put on my lipstick, I become Beniyasha, Destroyer of Realms!”
A 14 year-old bounty hunter.  After slaying youkai, she sells her spoils (youkai heads, fangs, and body parts) for a reward to the corpse-dealer Juubee (Shikabaneya Juubee).  She wields the youkai blade Kurikaramaru.  People call her “Moroha the Monster Killer”.  When she puts on lipstick from a shell compact adored with a red pearl, she runs wild as “Beniyasha, Destroyer of Realms” (Kunikuzushi no Beniyasha).  She has a lively and cheerful personality.  Compared to Setsuna and Towa, she is the one with the most practical worldly experience.  In reality she is Inuyasha and Kagome’s daughter, however because she’s been living alone since she was young she doesn’t know much about her parents.

The three heroines turned out quite charming.  I’m excited to see what kind of adventures they have!

So, that’s what we’ve got so far.  And as I thought, Takahashi had no story input for this, just character designs, much like the movies.  But the original staff of the Inuyasha anime is pretty much all back, including the original character designer Hishinuma Yoshihito, Satou Teruo was an episode director in the original series, but he’s the series director now, Sumisawa Katsuyuki is back as producer, and even Wada Kaoru is back on music.  So, from that we know it’s probably going to “feel” pretty similar to the original Inuyasha anime.
I just... ngh... some things need to just be allowed to end.  Plus the character designs and story feel like a gauntlet of bad fanfiction tropes.  Twins?  Check.  Off-color hair streaks?  Check.  They’re “long-lost” daughters who don’t know the main characters are their parents?  Check.  They’re in a modern school setting despite that not being the setting of the original story?  Check.  Their character designs are just a recolor or fusion of existing characters?  Check (Towa is literally just a recolor of Juumonji Tsubasa from “Kyoukai no Rinne”).
I’ll probably still watch it out of morbid curiosity, but this feels like something on the heels of “Boruto” or “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” or “Final Fantasy X-2″ or all those direct-to-video Disney sequels that’s like... did this really need to exist?
