The Lore of Streets of New Capenna: Jaxis, the Troublemaker
Tumblr media
“Demons rule New Capenna, but word from the Caldaia is that won't be true for long.
There's a star down there in the boxing rings, a name lifted by the cheering crowds of New Capenna's deepest borough: Jaxis, the Troublemaker. She's a fighter, a boxer, one of the best to ever do it. Got a right hook like the Capenna main line and a jab like a jackhammer. Undefeated, she's good enough that people have started to talk; following a failed hit on her by Maestro assassins, people have started to hope.
Everyone saw it. The assassins cornered her, outnumbered her five to one, and then in a flash she was surrounded by burning shadows—shadows the people recognized. They were other champions; some she'd fought, some who had retired or passed on long ago. Called to her side, they walloped the assassins, driving them away to the cheers of the bystanders. Jaxis isn't just the best, the people say: she's blessed. Demons might rule New Capenna, but fighters like Jaxis bring the people hope.”

streets of new capenna suffers greatly from a mismanagement of expectations in much the same way ikoria did. the pitch the audience was given for the set was, a city founded by angels who are no longer there is now run by five crime families run by demons. and all of that was, ultimately, true.
but that’s a sentence that implies that demons will be a big part of this setting. that there will be many demons in many colors, since they are the ones running the crime families that are ostensibly the set’s focus.
in practice, SNC has five demons. five specific demons, since they are all legendary. one single demon per crime family. and none of them look remotely like demons, because in the context of the setting “demon” is basically a title.
also: there’s angels in this set. and they outnumber the demons almost two to one
i’m not saying wotc lied, because they didn’t. i’m saying that they revealed such specific and narrow slices of the truth, that any rational person would draw incorrect conclusions from them. and that’s... not good marketing? like, obviously this couldn’t have been an intentional misdirect because its *harmful*

Someone on twitter was asking which MTG Set was their fav/least fav this year so here are some thoughts
I think my fav set this year was Kamigawa Neon Dynasty. It was great, I was hyped for it, all the cards had a great feeling to me, to my knowledge it didn’t break anything and it gave me two of my fav commanders, which are Lightpaws and Shorikai. I love mechs so I’ve been eating good food for some time this year lol with the focus on artefacts we have had!
My least fav would be Innistrad double feature but it’s a bit cheating I guess since it was like. shitty lol. Otherwise I think it’d be SNC. It’s a bit forgettable, just setting up the mcguffin, and with a lot of inconsistencies in the story (about the angels, about Elspeth’s past, about Ob Nixilis being here just to job... ?) but it was still cool!
If we’re not talking about premier sets, I didn’t care for CLB except that it gave me some new toys for some decks ; I’m not too fond of the 2x2 price tag but it is what it is ; and I won’t talk about magic 30th lol.

my first streets of new capenna draft and i trophied at 7-1!
shout out to the person who played expendable lackey turn one and proceeded to do nothing but attach three different security bypasses to it over the next three turns plus a raffine’s guidance. the unblockable 7/7 was cool but outpaced by my citizens

Last week picked up some Streets of New Capenna cards; a pre-release box and three set boosters.
The set boosters netted some nice cards but the draft boosters were kind of weak…
Added a couple cards to my Azorius Control deck to test out. Hard to say right now if it’s worth the effort to splash green, but with City of Brass and Gemstone Mine in he deck, it’s not too hard to play the new Brokers Charm.

The Lore of Streets of New Capenna: A Bleak Answer
“While the archangels puzzled, the archdemons of Capenna plotted. During the war, Capenna's archangels and their angelic hosts ravaged the enemy with their mere presence. The archdemons studied this divine natural weapon and realized that if they could trap angels and distribute their essence across the whole of New Capenna—maybe even out into Old Capenna—they could drive the enemy back and ensure the city and their people would be saved. Alone, though, they could not accomplish their betrayal, so the archdemons sent their whisperers to the ears of mortal, power-hungry Capennans, planting a bleak answer to the question of the future: trap the angels, and let an age of demons begin.”

Streets of New Capenna OCs:
Aparajita, the Mistress of Counterspell (left)
Letizia, Proprietor of the 'Rainbow' (right)
Aparajita is from Kaladesh, where her ambient counter magic reeked havoc on her inventions. She was a consulate spy but her dream was to be a singer. She came to New Capenna and found her magic doesn't counter Halo.
Letizia is from New Capenna, where she worked within the Cabaretti. She rose up the ranks and was awarded her own lounge, the Rainbow. Her spark took her to the home of a hedonist snake goddess. All enjoyment and Halo imbibed in her place is turned into offerings to her patron across the blind eternities.
Together they are married and run the most luxurious neutral zone for the five families.
