van helsing character notes from today: he is typically "up to time" (punctual), and also always brings his bag with him now (ready for the worst)
"Let all be put down... exactly." OH GOD. here it comes.
I love the way Jack says "it was a lovely morning"; he's speaking with hindsight here, and his misery and resignation color all that came before. He sounds almost mournful as well as wistful when he describes the beautiful day, because he knows the contrast awaiting him inside.
Jack saying "She is always an early riser." with a audible side-eye is so funny. I don't think it's about what he's saying here, more the context of her seeing Lucy and not noticing her sleep isn't peaceful rest. And of course taking away the flowers. Or maybe it's even just that he wishes he didn't have to run into her first thing in the morning.
I LOVE the little, "mm?" interspersed throughout Mrs. Westenra's speech. Again, I feel like the voice acting paints such a good picture of her character, and especially here where she is seeking praise/showing off her self-satisfaction at "helping"
Speaking of. The little edge of rasp in Jack's delivery of "to which she answered:" just before Mrs. Westenra reveals what she has done. And his resigned tone on "asked the Professor." As he's narrating this dialogue he is restricted to just speech tags but his delivery makes his misery clear.
the music creeping in as Mrs. Westenra talks about the "horrible, strong-smelling flowers" building as you realize what she's done and what it must mean in time with van Helsing...!
Mrs. Westenra sounds so proud of herself. So oblivious and cheerful.
The little quiver in Jack's voice at "he actually smiled on her"
"Then, for the first time in my life, I saw Van Helsing break down." Jack speaks this line softly, almost wonderingly. He has so much faith in van Helsing, and he's been using his mentor's confidence as a linchpin to keep his own composure; to see van Helsing break like this is terrifying to him I think. And he doesn't know what to do about it, can't say anything.
van Helsing's sobs and gasping breaths for control are BRUTAL. SO INCREDIBLE. god and his plea to god. AMAZING
and the music, almost gentle at first but more and more creepy and lingering/ominous as he goes along
the fierce determination as van Helsing insists they will keep fighting
"yet another operation of transfusion of blood." the way Jack says this line I think really brings out a sense of hopeless resignation. He sounds almost sickened at the last word. Everything seems to point to this being useless yet again, but obviously failing to try their utmost isn't even a consideration. He just is losing hope that it can be stopped.
"Again the operation; again the narcotic; again some return of colour to the ashy cheeks, and the regular breathing of healthy sleep." THIS delivery is so excellent. The deep sigh, the resigned tone, the almost bored listing of what was once so agonizing an operation. The way he doesn't linger on Lucy's improvement at all, doesn't even linger on van Helsing's condition. Instead he just kind of sums up that it worked (for now), that van Helsing spoke to Mrs. Westenra, etc. etc.....
"After another hour Lucy waked from her sleep, fresh and bright and seemingly not much the worse for her terrible ordeal." He sounds almost amused, and so exhausted, so sad. She doesn't even know that she has nearly died for a third time. She doesn't know that, as far as he can tell, she will continue on just like this, on and on, nearly dying, barely saved, recovered and cheerful, and then death coming back again, and again, until eventually it cannot be denied any longer...
van Helsing broke down today, but Jack is the one who is most brutally disheartened. He's losing hope, he's becoming almost numb, he's doubting his own mind.

Punch At First Sight
Summary: Anthony Lockwood x Fe!Reader -> You and Lockwood have met a few times before, however after a punch to the face for the third time, Lockwood, which a push from Lucy, decides to make things different.
Disclaimer: Multiple uses of the f-word. Mentions of accidental violence, ghosts, Kipps being a dick, a slap across the face. Fluff, angst, hints of jealousy, and Lucy giving Lockwood a needed talking to. Not Proof Read.
Tumblr media
It was meant to be an easy case.
A couple of type ones haunting an abandoned building just outside of London. The local ghost hunters had all created that big of a myth they had scared themselves away. And the cost of a Fittes agent was too high of a price for the type of ghosts they had. So, Lockwood and Co were the business chosen.
Only, it would have been nice to know if one of the previous agents had reached out to an old friend to take care of the job as well.
But, no.
Instead, whilst listening out for the ghosts, Lockwood stepped around a corner and when getting ready to attack what he thought was a ghost, he was met with a punch to the face and then a voice calling out; “Oh my god, you’re human.”
“Do you make a habit of punching ghosts?”
Then, through watered eyes, he saw the outline of the person who had punched him and it seemed she had clear enough vision in the dark to recognise him.
“Lockwood?”
“Wait.” he knew that voice. “Y/n?”
“Holy crap. I am so sorry. Are you okay? Wait. Why are you even here?”
“The same as you, I’m guessing. Unless you tend to sneak into abandoned buildings at two in the morning.”
“Sophie didn’t even tell me they hired someone else. Are you sure you’re alright?”
Lockwood managed to stand up straight this time just as Lucy and George came running round the corner.
“We heard a scream.”
“What’s going on?”
George looked from Lockwood to you. “Y/n?”
“Hi, George.”
“What are you doing here?”
“Nice to see you, too.”
“She was hired.” Lockwood explained just before Lucy spotted him.
“Holy crap, are you okay?”
Lockwood nodded. “Just a little stunned.”
“I really am sorry.”
“We really have to stop meeting like this.” Lockwood said, with a slight smile as he looked at you.
Then came a scream.
“Considering we’re all here and considering no-one else was hired to do this job-” George began.
“That wasn’t a human.” Lucy finished.
“And since we’re here with minimal weapons.”
One of the ghosts, a woman, came floating through a wall and turned to look at them.
“Run?” you offered.
“Run.” Lucy replied.
Making a break for it, you all tried to outrun the ghost before another one of her friends joined her, pushing all four of you down a different corridor.
“I’m Lucy, by the way.”
“Y/n. Nice to meet you.”
“You, too.”
By the time the sun was beginning to rise over the city, you all made it back to Portland Row where a fresh bruise had made its way to decorate Lockwood’s face.
“You have a hell of a punch.” Lockwood said before prodding his own bruise in his reflection of the pan on the stove.
You chuckled, pulling a bag of peas from the freezer before closing it and walking over. “Quit moaning. It could have been worse. Here.”
Standing, Lockwood seemed to have grown even taller than you. Taller than when you’d both last met.
Looking at you, you watched as his eyes closed at the cold contact of the bag as you pressed it to his face.
“Hold it there for a while. It should help with the swelling.”
“You know, we really need to stop meeting like this.”
You narrowed your gaze a little and clicked your tongue. “You’ve already used that line.”
“Have I?” Lockwood seemed to think for a moment before, “Oh, yeah. Suppose I have. But it is true.”
“Hey, the first time was an accident. I thought you were trying to-”
“The first time is an accident, three times is a pattern.”
You smiled sheepishly. “An accidental pattern.”
“Sure about that?”
“Yes.” you said before, “Maybe? Can never be too careful when hunting alone.”
Lockwood’s demeanour changed for a moment. “Alone? You’re hunting alone again?”
“Relax. I’m safe enough.”
You moved backwards and began to tidy the kitchen a little to give yourself something to do whilst Lockwood leaned back against the kitchen counter, lowering the frozen bag from his face so he could watch you more closely.
“Are you?”
“Yes, Lockwood. I’m fine. Honestly, you don’t have to worry about me.”
“Doesn’t mean I won’t.”
You held his gaze for a moment, a million thoughts running through your head until it landed on He’s just a friend…
From there, you shifted yourself from the kitchen table and placed the empty glasses in your hand in the sink beside him.
“Move here.”
“What?”
Lockwood stood tall once more and turned to face you properly. “Move in here. Lucy got a deal when she bought her bed, so she’s got a second one spare. We can set it up on the other side of the loft. I don’t like the thought of you hunting alone.”
“Lockwood, I said I’m fine.”
“What happens if something happens to you? Look, I can put you on the payroll so it won’t be a favour. You’ll be working with us. And you’ll have a team behind you. You’ll also be safe. Please.”
“Lockwood-”
“Please.”
Looking up at him, you saw the desperation in his eyes.
It wasn’t often he opened himself up or let himself show any kind of vulnerability but when he did…
“Okay. Fine. But you can’t hover over me.”
“I don’t hover.”
“You hover.”
“No I don’t.”
“Why did George kick you out of the Archive room in the last case we were in together?”
Lockwood thought back and when he didn’t answer, you answered for him.
“Because you hover.”
“Okay, maybe I hover a little.”
“But before anything is written, the others have to agree. Lucy, too.”
“She will. I know so. It’ll be nice for her to not be outnumbered.”
You moved in three days later.
Lucy had prepared the spare bed for you and even decorated the walls behind your bed with a couple of pictures she found in some old boxes that had yourself, George and Lockwood in them.
“I didn’t know what you’d want to do, but I thought I would do something to help at least.”
“I love it.” you smiled, dropping one of the boxes onto your bed. “Thank you.”
Over the following week, yourself and Lucy got to know one another, sharing stories late into the night when researching cases and in desperate need of a break.
Lucy came to learn what Lockwood meant by the punch when you all met not being the first time. You came to find out what brought Lucy to London. And you both came to discover that, with the right planning, you could both scare Lockwood and George.
Only, one night, George and Lucy decided to tag team which also gave them a chance to talk about you and Lockwood.
“Do they know? They have to know.”
“Don’t bother.” George sighed. “Three years and nothing has changed.”
“They’ve been like that for three years?”
George just nodded.
“Seriously?”
“You know I walked into the kitchen yesterday and they were slow dancing in the kitchen and…it was like nothing happened.”
“Yeah…”
“What?”
“What?” Lucy asked.
“Your face. You have that…look.”
“What look?”
“The “I’m making a plan” face.”
“Maybe because I am.”
“Well then?”
“What if we tried?”
“I already have.”
“Maybe,” Lucy nodded. “But that was then. Now you’ve got me. Tag-team. What do you say?”
“Well, considering it would take an earthquake to wake them both up from whatever coma they’ve convinced themselves that they’re in…sure. Why not? But how.”
“I haven’t got that far into the plan yet.”
But it didn’t take too long.
After six months of living with each other, the plan practically made itself. The chemistry between yourself and Lockwood was palpable and even more so when you were outside together.
Like when you and Lockwood were in the library with George and Lucy where Lockwood was standing behind you, reading the section of paper you were pointing to, his arms caging you in from where you sat, when a group of Fittes Agents waltzed over.
“You might want to give your girlfriend a little breathing room, Tony. After all, PDA can be off putting especially in such a public place.”
Standing, and not denying it, Lockwood practically burned Kipps a hole in the ground for him to fall through.
“Relax, Tony. Just having a little fun. So, are you going to introduce me to your girlfriend?”
“I’m not his girlfriend.”
“She’s not my girlfriend.”
Kipps couldn’t help but widen his smile. “You’re not. Well then, Tony.”
However, you were up like a shot standing beside Lockwood. “But I would be very careful in your next choice of words. He might not be my boyfriend but he is my friend.”
Closer up, Kipps seemed to recognise you. Or at least, that’s what his face told you.
“You know, for all the people in the world, I wouldn't have considered one of the best rogue agents being best buddies with our very own Anthony Lockwood.”
“And why not?”
“Although, rogue is very fitting for Tony. After all, it was breaking the rules that got him into trouble in the first place. Sweetheart, if I were you, I’d walk away whilst you still can.”
The only thing anyone could remember was hearing the contact of your palm across Kipps’ cheek and the red mark left in its place.
“Fuck you.”
It took a moment to get over the shock before Kipps and his team walked away and you relaxed a little before grabbing your jacket and telling the others you’d be back.
“Are you-”
“I’m fine, Lockwood. I’ll be back in five.”
It was in those five minutes that one of Kipps’ team found you by the vending machine.
“I’m sorry about what he said.”
“Why? You didn’t say it. And I’m guessing you’re assigned to be with him.”
“Still, I could have said something to stop him and I didn’t.”
“Something tells me even if you did, he still would have said it anyway.”
“Maybe.”
“What’s your name?”
“Victor.”
“Nice to meet you,Victor.”
Meanwhile, across the room and up a level, Lucy spotted you talking to Victor. Even laughing every once in a while. And when Lockwood joined her, she saw the pain in his eyes before a brick wall came up.
“We should be getting ready. George found something. I’ll be back in a minute.”
For the rest of the day, Lockwood seemed closed up. Especially towards you.
“What is your problem?” you eventually asked him.
“Nothing.”
“Lockwood, I heard you snap at Lucy earlier.”
“She made a mistake.”
“Exactly,” you cut him off. “A mistake. And she’s never made one before.”
“One that could have put one of us in serious danger-”
“We were outside the perimeter.” You could have laughed, until Lockwood asked you a question you weren't expecting.
“Do you like him?”
“Who?”
“The guy you were talking to earlier.”
“Kipps? You did see me slap him, didn’t you-”
“Not Kipps. Vinny. Or Vincent or…whatever his name is.”
You thought back for a moment. “Victor.”
Lockwood nodded.
“Do I like him? What are we? 12?”
“Just answer the question.”
“Why?”
“Because I need to know if you’re fraternising with the enemy.”
You laughed. “Fraternizing?”
But when Lockwood didn’t change, you did.
“You know what, fuck you, Lockwood. What I do with my time outside of work is no concern to you. You know what, do this yourself. I’ll go and help George.”
A few minutes later, Lucy walked inside the room to a very grumpy Lockwood.
“What the hell did you do? Fraternising? This isn’t Bridgerton, Lockwood.”
“Will you just help with the set-up?”
Sighing, Lucy did as she was told, but not before telling Lockwood a couple things he desperately needed to hear.
“You’re gonna lose her.”
“What?”
Picking up some of the iron chains and laying them down, Lucy explained. “It might not be Victor, but one day it will be someone. And it probably won’t be long before they come along and whisk her away from your grumpy arse because you’re too stubborn to tell her the truth.”
“What truth?”
“That you like her. Love her, even. If my gut feeling is right. And it usually is.”
“Lucy-”
“Look, you can go on being an arsehole because you’re scared. Or you can talk to her. All I’m saying is do something about it before somebody else does. Both me and George have seen the way you look at her. It’s more than you want to admit, Lockwood. But one day you’re going to have to, or else you are going to lose her and all you’ll have is a bruised eye and a broken nose once every couple of years, if that.”
Lucy didn’t say anything else after that but Lockwood did apologise for snapping at her earlier which she forgave him for after calling him a frustrating bastard. From then, she watched as you all completed the job together and that look that she often saw in Lockwood’s eyes, returned when he looked at you.
Yet, by the time you had all gotten home, he still hadn't apologised to you. So, with a hard nudge from Lucy, Lockwood finally made his way to find you.
“Do something before somebody else does, and that includes apologising. And she’s in the Library. Goodnight.”
Lockwood stood outside of the Library door for a while, trying his best to find the right words so he wouldn’t end up with a broken nose, despite how much he probably deserved one.
You had lit the fire to try and cancel out the cold that had seeped in through a forgotten open window, and if you didn’t know any better, you would have thought it was midnight, not 6 in the morning.
“Hey.”
Looking behind you, you tried your best not to roll your eyes at Lockwood as he walked inside.
“I’m just looking over some old cases. Just so you know that I’m not fraternising with the enemy by reading a book.”
“I shouldn’t have said it like that.” Lockwood began. “I shouldn’t have said it at all. I just…I guess I panicked.”
“That’s a bullshit excuse and you know it.”
“You’re right. And I’m sorry.”
You looked at him.
“Really, really sorry. For the fraternising comment and the bullshit excuse.”
You took a minute and it was the longest minute of his life.
“Okay, guess I can forgive you.”
“I’m still sorry.”
“I know, that’s why I forgave you. But a cup of tea wouldn’t hurt.”
Lockwood smiled. “Okay. One tea coming up.”
Only, as he walked away, you answered his question.
“And I’m not…fraternising with the enemy. Victor and I were just talking. I think you’d like him. I think he might hate Kipps just as much as you do. And, no.” you shook your head. “I don’t like him. Just so you know…”
Lockwood nodded and for a moment, turned to walk away until Lucy’s words echoed again in his head.
“Do something about it, before somebody else does.”
So he did.
Sighing under his breath, he took the jump, turned around and reached for you.
Taking your head in his hands, he cupped your jaw before bringing your lips to his. At first, it shocked you and for a split second, he thought he was about to get his nose broken for good this time.
Until you kissed back.
You felt yourself stumble a little but Lockwood caught you, holding you close to him before his forehead came to touch yours, your eyes still closed.
“Wow.”
“I’m sorry but I just had to-”
You shook your head, “Don’t apologise.”
“No?”
You couldn’t help but smile. “No.”
“So you’re not going to break my nose.”
“Not this time,” you laughed a little.
“Okay…then I’m gonna jump. I like you. Well, I more than like you. Like way, way more. And I…I want to do something about it before someone else does.”
“Like Victor?”
“Yeah,” Lockwood laughed a little. “Like Victor.”
“Then…good. I’m glad you finally jumped.”
“You are.”
You nodded. “I mean, you have terrible timing but yeah, I’m glad you jumped.”
“Good.”
“Good. Now, are you gonna kiss me again or am I gonna have to-”
Lockwood didn’t need telling twice.

Happy Weekend everyone :) Exciting we got some BTS I can't wait for the first promo for the premiere. When we get our first crumb and we can all lose our collective minds. Ha Till then we are hitting another fav episode of mine. The one where really it’s Tim and Lucy on a date. Chris and Ashley just happen to be there. So many reasons I love this episode from the date to the work stuff it's all very good. Off we go.
4x12 The Knock
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our couple actually gets the cold open. They’re headed to the beach for a call. Lucy mentions how it sucks to be on the beach but not be able to enjoy it. That she can’t dive into the water. Tim is more than happy to stay away from the water and the beach. Forgetting he’s dating a lifeguard….(Sure he would love the ocean more if a wet Lucy Chen was in it) Lucy giving him crap saying how on brand this is for him. To hate one of natures greatest gifts lmao God I'll always love how she speaks her mind around him. Especially in S4. It's glorious.
Tim corrects her and says it’s the ocean not the beach he hates. Lucy can’t help but get into psychology mode. Telling him a fear of the ocean is related to not being in complete control of his environment. I mean that’s pretty damn spot on for Tim. We know what a control freak this man is over everything. (I can relate. heh) Tells him good luck dating a lifeguard LOL So much sass so early in their shift. Tim’s reactions through out this portion above are too funny.
Throwing his hands up and shaking his head at her analysis of him. Not fighting it BTW. Progress ha He used to be so anti-psych before her. Lucy can’t help but psychoanalyze him. Not only for the water but for Ashley let’s be honest. This flirty sass is only the beginning with this episode. Never be over how very vocal Lucy is about Ashley. Literally giving Tim breadcrumbs all over the place she’s not right for him. Also that she is not a fan. None of us are Lucy...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They make their way to Ashley. Saying she wasn’t expecting them to send their best. And hottest. (I mean she's not wrong. They both fine af.) Lucy is not about this flirt fest. So very transparent my friend haha Awkwardly does a *ahem* Trying to get Ashley to direct them to why she called. Asking where is the thing she called about? Tim can’t let it go when they’re walking towards it.
‘Did you hear her say the hottest?’ Wants so badly for Lucy to recognize he’s attractive. Trust me babe she knows. Painfully aware of it really. Something she has to consistently push down in your flirty moments. I bet you that look she gives in 5x12 was everything for him. When she was shamelessly checking him out. The validation he had been chasing forever. Part of him that just needs to know she finds him attractive. Oh Timothy. She does that’s part of the problem for her especially this season haha They’re walked up to a severed hand. Eww.
Tim’s point about the ocean being proven in this moment. Ashley is just standing there while they bicker like a married couple haha Which is basically this entire episode honestly. Really this season but there is a heavy emphasis on it in this one. Tim asking her if she wants to go in now? Such a shit. I love him so much. Lucy being the exasperated one this time lmao. Look at her reaction above. Annoyed wife status. Idk how Ashley could be around them and not wonder if Tim was in love with Lucy? SMH. Third wheel in her own relationship when Lucy is around. Another theme of this episode.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tim comes up after Lucy is done talking to Chris. They were theorizing what the story behind the hand could be. He takes off and Tim immediately notices ‘the look’ and he comments on it. Asking her what’s that look? Lucy is defensive and says 'Nothing.... What?' It’s here we see jealous Tim emerge. Welcome sir please stay awhile. Noting she wanted to strangle Chris last week. Now she’s sweet on him?
Lucy can’t help but give him grief for his old school verbiage. Haha He’s the old dude from UP time and time again. I mean this scene really is just Tim speak for jealous. He doesn't like Chris. Never has never will. Lucy deflects said jealously into making fun of him. Tim not even trying to hide how he feels about this situation. Liked it better where she wanted to strangle Chris. He knows that look and isn’t exactly excited about it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ashley comes up saying she’s all done with her paperwork. Asking if he has any plans tonight? Tim tells her no. She goes on to tell him her friend won 4 raffle tickets to a fancy dinner thing. Tim being skeptical asks what that entails? She tells him it’s called OSIA. Lucy’s interest is now piqued. Ashley continues on to say it’s a beach pop up. 12 fusion meals and wine pairings.
You can see Tim doesn’t look excited. He tells her he’ll have to think about it. Ashley asks him what there to think about? Lucy jumps right in cause well it’s Lucy. Saying the control freak in him doesn’t like to try new things. (Well he does just not with you Ashley...) You're not the one he's going to jump off cliffs for. Cause well. You know. The vapid quality you bring to this whole thing… Seriously how is Ashley not constantly threatened by Lucy? Tim gets defensive and says he’s not a control freak. Ok honey…..Lucy is enjoying this so very much. Look at her above. Challenging him to proof he is not.
Tim changes his tune and says he would be happy to go to her fancy dinner thing. Funny Tim was a hard no till Lucy called him out. If I was Ashley I would be thinking it was weird Tim only said yes to spite Lucy but ok LOL Honestly the control freak in him to control this moment by saying yes haha My god Timothy. To show Lucy he's not one if he goes. Not the reason to go to a fancy place with your GF. To show up your ‘platonic aide.' but you do you Tim.
Tumblr media
They return to the station and Tim gets a phone call. It’s Ashley saying her friend bailed on dinner. She starts suggesting another friend and Tim looks at Lucy. Knowing if he has to do this dinner thing he at least wants her there. Not some random other couple if he can help it. Unconsciously reaching for his safe space in this instance. I.e. Lucy. So he casually says Lucy been pining after that place all day. Lucy TOUCHES his forearm during her excitement.
If a gif could sum up their dynamic/personality in one moment it would be this one one. Heh Her excitement and his need for her to chill on said excitement. Sunshine x Grumpy at its finest. Tim then makes the biggest mistake ever. (He just doesn’t realize it yet…) Spots Chris and tells him Lucy needs a date to a fancy dinner. Oh my love you’re going to live to regret this one. Saw a funny post about this moment. 'Congratulations you just played yourself.' HA It's true though... Does his fake Chris smile to get him to come with.
So desperate to have her there with him he invites Chris. Someone he can't stand. You're a hot mess Timothy. I love you. The clown agrees to said dinner while Lucy stands there and watches this all unfold. She is stunned into silence mostly lol Tim gets off the phone and says’What? Don't be such a control freak.’ The shade Tim the absolute shade. Who is this man? Also let’s note they’re doing a work flirt inside this ‘double date’ before it even begins. Only these two…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So begins the date where a third and fourth wheel called Chris and Ashley just happen to be there for the ride. Really this entire portion is just one giant display of their bond. I love it so much. We get to see their exquisite connection front and center. That seamless flow of theirs and how they lean on one another naturally. Tim starts out real strong saying how he doesn’t understand why a restaurant would be on a beach? Oh my grumpy old man. Lucy isn't phased by this but Ashley is. Their first course arrives and Tim looks so very confused as their server explains it.
This is their first married moment of the night. Tim asking if any of that was English? Lucy steps in. Says she can translate for him. All he needs to know is it’s made of mushroom. Which she knows isn’t his favorite. She knows his various likes and dislikes. Because of course she does. This is her work husband after all. Lucy knows all the things. It’s the way she naturally leans over and he tells her to take it. He leans back and lets her snatch it up. I have a feeling this isn’t the first time this has happened during a meal. They’ve just never had an audience before. This is touching on our 'you know me so well. too well.' OTP moment.
I love him just letting her eat off his plate. Like it ain’t no thang... Just a normal day. Nothing to see here people. Totally normal platonic partners right here. It’s Ashley’s face while Lucy does this that makes me laugh. She is picking up on a vibe so hard. It’s written all over her face. Then there is clueless Chris to her left. Not noticing the dynamic between them. He is a wet match in a damp cave folks. Ashley however is picking up on it right away. You’d have to be blind not to or be Chris at this point LMAO Ashley feeling every bit the third wheel. Says she didn’t know he didn’t like mushrooms? Tim tells her it’s ok. (it's ok cause his wife knows…)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chris brings up he’s not much of an adventurous eater. But did have curry goat one time in Jamaica. This prompts Tim to come up with a story about Lucy. Because he’s on a date with her and not Ashley right? Tim starting off with ‘Was his name Gerald?’ It’s the way he’s looking right at her when he says this. It’s so cute. They're like a couple on their honeymoon swapping stories with a couple they just met. Lucy trying to stop her enthusiastic husband from embarrassing them by sharing too much.
Tim could not be more adorable with how excited he is to tell this story. Look how animated he is above. Only Lucy brings this side out of him. Let's also note how how his eyes basically never leave her face. Lucy’s sheepish ‘god shut up don’t....’ Trying to cut Tim off from telling this story. Married moment number two coming right up. It's the way she's reacting that is so precious.
A wife trying to stop her husband from embarrassing her with a story. This scene is just so damn endearing. It's a testament to the seamless flow that is them. That bond no one seems to really understand but them. The inside jokes and how they’re finishing each other sentences. That lovely ebb and flow they have. If you didn’t know the context of this scene you’d think they were the ones in a relationship.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They're behaving in a manner that strongly resembles a married couple. The fact that it's in front of their dates tickles me pink. They’re basically screaming their feelings in this moment through this story. The looks they give each other while the other is talking. *heart clutch* The smiles and looks of love. Chris and Ashley's reactions are what make the situation so amusing. Like two outsiders looking into a world they don’t understand. At all. They don't speak the language and it shows.
They get so lost in each other and in this story. They don’t pick up on the vibes across the table. Ashley being confused and threatened. Chris being well clueless and pretending he knows what’s going on. How either of could watch this chemistry filled display and not walk away from the table is beyond me. Their dates are on a date with each other right now. They just don’t realize it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What's being depicted here is their profound bond, their history, the looks, the touches and laughter. They barely look at their dates towards the end of the story. If you needed a 'Tell me your ship is married without telling me they are?' This is that in spades. Look at the way they are smiling, laughing and looking at each other toward the end of this story. He is sporting his Lucy smile in the gifs above.
Never smiles for anyone the way he does for her. His heart reaching his eyes and lips just for his girl. Tim is so damn pleased with himself for teasing her. Sheer joy out of telling an embarrassing story involving her. Straight flirting right in front of their dates. Tim is so in love with her in this moment. I mean the man took a small comment from Chris and turned it into as story about Lucy. One from a long time ago no less. Nothing soulmate like at all about this behavior.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at these two in these final gifs. All heart eyes, smiles, and giggling. That Tim smile loud and proud. They're like two idiots in love who can’t help but project that love to everyone around them. Haven't torn their eyes from one another. They’ve completely forgotten the others at the table. Faded into their own flirty world. I know some people said they felt second-hand embarrassment. I didn’t I LOVED seeing this. I love her laughter feeding off his amusement asking 'Why?' Him replying 'It's funny.' laughing with her. It was only funny to them LOL I’m dying it’s so good.
Ashley is not pleased. Can’t say I blame her. Lucy is bringing out a side that is foreign to her. What happens when you're blah and bring nothing to a relationship. You get second hand Tim. To me this episode is as just one step closer to showing they’re supposed to be together. Shows the depth of their bond at this point. That magnetic draw they have to one another even with others around. Even when those people are the ones they’re supposedly on a date with. They're oozing cute newlywed vibes here and I was so happy to watch it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We return to them now having a spirited debate about experimenting on the dead. It's stemming from the case they're working on. A mad man has been taking severed limbs trying to reanimate them. Married moments 3 and 4 are arriving at the station. It’s the fact that their bodies are now pointed at each other. Effectively shutting out the others at the table. Ashley inserts herself back into the convo finally getting them to break of from one another. (Seriously Ashley all the signs were there. Should cut this off after this dinner alone.)
She asks Tim if he hasn’t volunteered to be an organ donor then? Lucy answers for him cause wifey knows the answer. Telling Ashley all about it. How he wants his ashes spread over Dodger field LOL I love her knowing this detail. It’s one thing to know someone’s dislikes in food. It’s another to know info like this. Lucy knows him like the back of her hand. He didn’t even care she answered for him. Tim could not be cuter saying his ashes would mess up the PH of the grass. LMFAO. I love this man sfm everyone I really do. Lucy replying like only a wife would.
Making fun of him for calling in the first place. I love these two so much. Also adore how relaxed and comfortable Tim is. His body still pointed towards Lucy. You know she is the reason he’s so relaxed. Why he is having fun. It's because his person is there. Bringing out the best in him. Making jabs and bantering back and forth with him. Chris awkwardly adds in ‘I like the dodgers…’ I’m rolling. No one cares little dude. Tim going back to being a little reserved with his ‘Yeah..’ reply. Tim makes one last jab at the food. How ridiculous it is. Ashley gets up from the table and Tim tries to apologize but she’s out out there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next day they’re sent to the county morgue. The guy who’s been working on dead people has been linked to here. They figured out he was using the morgue for his experiments. Because it’s for people who aren’t identified and get buried by the state. Pretty sad but right up this deranged guy's ally. Once they arrive they see blood on the floor. Follow it to where they find him hold up in a room. Trying to get more body parts.
This next section is a lesson in how not to have any personal space by Tim and Lucy. Also how far they’ve come professionally with this moment. Chester the crazy person has a room of people hostage. Tim takes off his body cam and slides it into the room. Opens his phone and makes his way back to Lucy.
Tim asks her what their options are? I LOVE Tim trusting Lucy’s instincts. Asking for them instead of testing them. This scene is so intimate. From their soft voices to way he guides her into place. Places his hand on her lower back and she trust him to do so. Then takes a glance at his phone. Talking out her options with him. Adore how they're so in sync in this scene. How they move together. Gets me right in the feels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I saw a post (link inside that) awhile ago about how Eric and Melissa took them standing together to another level. How they took the initiative to be like 'Hmm the fans would love this.' So they made it this intimate moment we all know and love. I adore them doing this kind of stuff. Knowing it’ll drive the fans crazy in the best way. Gah the way he’s intensely looking at her as she processes her thoughts. Like a proud husband waiting for her to make her call. This moment shows they have the same amount of chemistry inside their job as they do outside of it. Nothing changes. This scene was *fans self*
Tim waiting for her to make her decision. Knowing she going to make the right one. His trust in her implicit at this point. The silent communication going on here is out of this world. Also look at this man’s jawline. Could cut glass on that thing. Peppered with stubble too. Yum Tum. Thought we made it through a review without me ogling Tim didn’t you? You're welcome. Lucy comes up with a bad ass plan where no one gets hurt. Tim blinding him with his flashlight. Chester erratically shoots at it. Lucy takes him out with her taser with him distracted. They arrest Chester and save the hostages. BAMF'S
Tumblr media
Lucy is leaving the station when the clown catches her. Chris telling her he wasn’t really feeling last night. Yeah cause she was on a date with Tim not you… (You'll never compare but sure go ahead putz.) Lucy apologizing to him. Saying her and Tim spend so much time together. They just have a shorthand. It's so much more than that. If by shorthand you mean deep emotional connection and bond. An intimacy that can be felt just by the way you look at each other and silently communicate.
Where you finish each other sentences, make each other laugh, have inside jokes no one else gets, throw heart eyes at one another and clearly are so very in love. Love each other warts and all. Then sure let’s call all that a 'shorthand' Lucy. Whatever helps you sleep at night LOL She ends up setting up a do-over with Chris. Bleh. But she can’t have Tim right now so he’s it atm. Just a distraction for her nothing more. Like a snack you don't super love but it's there. So you pick at it not expecting much enjoyment out of it other than filling yourself up.
Tumblr media
Tim has Ashley meet him at the station to apologize. She points out how he spent the entire time talking to Lucy. Well I mean he did…. Tim telling her his job is unpredictable. His entire career has been that way with his jobs. That at the end of the day likes his creature comforts. I hate that Ashley was always trying to change Tim. There’s compromise and there’s someone who doesn’t fit with you. Like trying to shove square peg into a round hole with them.
Lucy would be so happy to do those things with him. Also she’s just not worth him going out of his comfort zone for. Lucy is the only one to get him to do that. As we see in S5 the things he's willing to do for Lucy vs what HAS to do for Ashley. Lucy loves Tim for everything that is him grumpus and all. Where as Ashley tries to alter Tim and things she doesn't. Get him to fit what she wants out of a man. Just not the right one for him to do any of those things. It's telling af how Tim gets defensive when she calls Lucy his partner.
The denial is so real Timothy. She sees his freakout and he reels back saying that’s not the point… it kinda is though haha I swear only reason Tim was with her was to show how right Lucy was for him. How Lucy adds to him and Ashley only subtracts. He was so ready to just settle for he since he wasn’t going to get what he really wanted. More we learn about Ashley more we see him settling. Giving up parts of himself for her because he doesn’t think he’ll get those things anyway. (Marriage, kids, stupid in love happiness) Not till Lucy...Thus ends our marriage moments episode. I truly love this one.

(SPOILERS!!!!) Things i think ballad of songbirds and snakes did well and did poorly on (SPOILERS!!!)
Pros:
•i think they did a really great job with their visuals on panem. I think both the districts and the capitol are better translated on screen in this one than in the original three.
•i think the costume design is also better than the original three
•they do a great job at expressing Snow's intentions and thoughts without having the inner monolog as a story telling device. I wasnt sure how well that would translate but it was fantastic
•I like the few little nods they gave to the original movies, while cutting the super cheesey ones.
•the acting is superb. Genuinely no notes.
Cons:
• biggest complaint: holy fuck its rushed. Its so rushed. Most of my complaints are honestly just because its rushed
•so many characters cut out or half assed. Clemensia, SEJANUS, lil, spruce, pluribus, so many
•some pretty big plot points missed, WHY DIDNT THEY TALK MORE ABOUT THE GODDAMN BIRDS. Reaper!!! All the other tributes, the funerals! I understand to keep it pg13 they probably had to cut parading the bodies around but good god give us something! Ma!!!!!
•the entire third act shouldve been twice as long if not three times as long. Its not enough time to explain anything at all. Theyre just moving through each plot point as quickly as possible. No time to understand, no explaining, no suspense. Soooo rushed.
• they missed some pretty big, important quotes.
• maybe unpopular but I hate the ending. Both Lucy Grey's ending and the movie ending. For too many reasons to explain.
In conclusion, I think its beautiful cinematically and acting wise. I think all the actors, costume designers, CGI, art directors, etc did a fucking fabulous job. In those ways it's honestly 10/10. But plot wise, writing wise, I was disappointed. I feel like the plot points they half assed were worse than the ones they cut out entirely. If you didn't read the book I think some aspects will leave you confused or wondering why they were included at all, and if you read the book you'll leave frustrated. I honestly wish they wouldve cut more so they could focus, if they couldn't stick to the plot points they wanted. I think I would've been happier with a looser adaptation going in its own direction than being forced to half ass things that are otherwise impactful but left seeming hollow.

Chenford - Lucy Chen / Tim Bradford - The Rookie - Season 5 - Ep 19
"A Hole in the World" AKA Clothes Call Back Night
Folks, when that first sneak peek came out, I dissolved into laughter in the dining room, and my husband had to momentarily question my sanity (just like every Sunday afternoon). It hit on practically every discussion point from the Chenford Twitterverse over the past few weeks.
I had to sit here and give the world's smallest round-of-applause-by-one to the team behind The Rookie for putting that out there. Genius way to get a lot covered in a short amount of time.
SPOILER ALERT: If you want a spoiler-free take on what's going on in Chenfordland, I'm sorry, you're in the wrong place. Come back when you're ready to be spoiled. Or don't come back at all! You're welcome to do as you choose.
For those about to rock, I salute you! So, let's dive in.
Lucy studying with note cards, written notes, and likely a practice test is just so on-brand, and I kinda love that we start the scene with her in her element.
The domesticity of Chenford never fails. It's insane to remember that as of their first kisses in the midst of undercover preparation (and under covers, of course) was only Tim's third time in that apartment, and first time there out-of-uniform.
Less than a season later, he's practically living at her place (while I head-canon Kojo is doing a great job helping his nephews with the transition to Los Angeles and playing in their yard).
And is Tim wearing the 4x01 almost-sleepover (heh) hoodie!? It might be the same bottoms, too! If they dug those up (and God bless whoever either saved them or bought duplicates), that's just amazing. I had a mini-geek out, and I bet I'm not the only one!
And for whatever reason, Tim's wearing shoes with this outfit, and I can't tell if that's because he instinctively put them on, or someone thought we wouldn't be seeing his feet in the shot. But, it made me chuckle because I'm hoping it's the former.
And is Lucy's hair being held up by a pen!? Okay, I'm officially jealous. I'm of the "chopsticks in hair" generation, and I always needed two. My friends could stick a good ole Number 2 in their hair and be good for the day. My hair's so fine and straight that I just couldn't do it. Rock it, Lucy Chen!
"Hey." "Hey." "When did you get in?" "Uh, depends. What day is it?" "That bad, huh?"
We're getting the first-blush look at these long hours we heard so much about. Remember, Tim's predecessor was dead on his feet. Yes, he had triplets at home, but that was on top of the brutal Metro hours.
"Look, I'm 80% sure it's, it's Thursday." "It's Tuesday."
Yes, it is! And we're all cozied up to our couches, beds, floors, recliners, and dining room tables to soak up the Chenford goodness. And mmmm, does it go down smooth!
"I stayed up anyways. Thought maybe I'd get lucky and he'd turn himself in."
Girlfriend. Girl. Friend! Did you really just use an undercover Tim/Lucy-ism? Throwing me straight back to 5x01 and Lucy/Juicy wondering if they could get lucky three times in the same day.
Lucy definitely wants to get lucky. But Metro hours aren't the best for getting busy, it seems.
"Oh, babe."
And there we've got the long-awaited pet name!! We still don't know what Tim calls Lucy (could also be Babe), but I saw the Twitterverse start to spin in the opposite direction at this particular name-drop.
Lucy Chen, how can you slay an entire population with a single word? You so don't know your power.
Tim sits next to the love of his life at her dining area smiling. He spent so much time last week trying to prove to the camera crews that he wasn't a softie. But we all know the truth. Tim Bradford is soft for those he loves—especially the love of his life.
His eyes trail to the notes spread atop the counter as his hand trails to her thigh.
Can we completely see it? No. But there's enough anecdotal evidence based on the placement of Tim's arm in the two-shot to conjecture, so I'm rolling with it.
Last time I didn't roll with the evidence, y'all crowded into my comments to remind me I was very wrong. It was a fun time.
"What's all this?" "What?" *arm smack*
Y'all, Lucy is so me in this moment. And I only say that because I'm older and she's fictional. To say I'm Lucy would mean I'm fictional, right? And (as far as I know) I'm real. Unless it's a Deckard in Blade Runner situation... in which case... I'm already Rachel.
But the affectionate arm smack is a total Rachel move (as my husband would confirm).
"I'm studying for the Detective's Exam." "Since when?" "I didn't tell you?"
I've seen folks jumping all over Lucy for "not telling Tim about something life-changing", but it'd be great if that could stop. Have you ever loved someone so much that you shared everything with them? I have. I tell Matthew everything.
And, yet, there are still times I'm convinced I've told him everything only to find I imagined the conversation because our lives are just too busy.
Look, Lucy and Tim already have demanding jobs with demanding hours. Yes, her going Detective would constrict their off-time more, but they're already grappling with the realities of cops-in-love juggling duty to a profession they earnestly adore and investing in a still-fairly-new romance.
It's not a choice of omission on her part. It's the overwhelm of juggling combined with the fact that she does tell him everything, so she assumed he already knew.
Communication issue? Clearly! Completely normal? Absolutely!
For goodness sake, Tim didn't even know what day it was. Living in a constant state of exhaustion and somehow functioning is my normal, so I can tell you that try as you might, something might slip through the cracks.
"If I'm gonna work undercover, the best move is to become a detective in some division like intelligence or narcotics, right?" "Right."
First off, Lucy Chen promotion-time, baby! I know a lot of us have been waiting for the moment when she'd get to move up. Heck, Aaron made P2 before she got to move up, and it's driven me nuts.
Look, I have no idea what a realistic timeline is in the real world. But Nolan's Golden Ticket allowed him to move up. Nyla moved up. Angela moved up. Tim's moved up. It's about damn time my fictional bestie got her turn.
Second, Supportive Tim Supremacy for the Win! Like, once he's on the right page, he doesn't skip a beat. Since I am married to the most supportive man in the world, I'm grateful Lucy's gonna marry the most supportive man in The Rookie world.
"So you got the tap." "Harper and Lopez are backing me."
Look at the glee on our girl's face! And that little chuckle from Tim? Oh, swoon!! Yes, I am a sucker for a supportive partner.
If you knew the number of times over the last near-20 years that this man has had my back, you'd shake your head and wonder why he's stuck around with how many times I've leaned on that support. Supportive partners make my weary heart happy.
"All I have to do is score in the top 12, which-" "Which you will."
BAM! Because Lucy Chen can do anything. Tim once held her hand (yes, it was a handshake, go with me here...) and told her to never let anyone tell her she couldn't do something.
Translation: Lucy Chen can do anything and Tim Bradford earnestly believes that.
And Lucy feels that support. In all of her relationships—friendship, romantic, familial—she has yearned for support. Sadly, the most supportive of her friends is gone. Her parents are dead to me (I hope the Mother's Day flowers Lucy sent were dried and shriveled like her mother's heart).
And her last boyfriend tried to persuade her to walk away from her dreams. Contrast that with Tim Bradford who was willing to push her towards them, even when that meant pushing her away from him. And now, as they're together, Tim is still supporting her without question.
My husband is that way. I often ask him about things. Not because he rules me (nope. I'd never survive a relationship like that), but because I believe in communication. So, I'll talk things out with him, and before I offer him my reasoning he says, "Do it." That's been his general answer to me for nearly two decades.
So, seeing Tim mirror my beloved plastered a grin on my face so wide I was approached on the street to be in the sequel to SMILE.
Lucy's got a smile on her face, too, as she hums out her appreciation and leans in for the kiss.
Special Shout Out to the DP and Director for giving us that two-shot with push-in of the kiss with the loud LIPSMACK to counterbalance Chenford's last apartment kiss/near-kiss that left me wondering if coffee tumblers made kissy sounds as the hot liquid settled.
I feel like someone on the decision-making team was like, "They want to see lip locks? No fucking way they'll miss this one! This'll shut them up."
No way to miss Tim leaning on the counter with one arm (bringing him closer to Lucy's height, because this man is taller than her in both legs and torso). And we actually see lips-meeting-lips.
Though it's a simple-enough kiss, there's suction there, which helps imply action and intention rather than passivity. Wow, I'm a weirdo analyzing a kiss this deeply, but whatever. It's my Meta, I'll over-analyze if I want to. It's square-kissing versus Tim's top-lip-sucking action he reserves for more passionate moments.
And that's beautiful. Because not every kiss is about undressing. Some kisses are about being beautifully exposed and fully accepted and loved. That's Tim and Lucy in this moment.
Tim is the supportive lover of her dreams. Lucy is the supportive lover of his dreams.
In a world where both of them grew up feeling unloved and unsupported for one reason or another, they have found more than a safety net in one another—they've found home.
Tim's affectionately rubbing her arm, and she is completely relaxed in his love.
"Well, I guess we should get used to not seeing each other so much."
The Metro move afforded them more time together than Lucy switching stations would have. But this latest move for her will add to her hours.
It's not a reason not to make this move. But... there's another move these two could make together. *hint hint* The kind that involves one set of keys for two lives? *hint hint*
Lucy deserves this. Hands down. And Tim knows that. But he also has a lot of trauma where UC and working long hours with someone he loves. It ended in heartbreak.
Now, Tim doesn't believe that's where he and Lucy are headed... but I think a small part of him in the back of his mind fears it. And that's something the two of them need to talk out.
Also, can we note the interesting choice to use the kiss as an opportunity to change angles? We went from being behind the counter aimed toward the windows to being in front of the windows aimed at the kitchen.
I'm not sure of the motivation for the move, but the film minor in me made note of it. Fairly classic technique.
"Mm, right. Yeah. Between Detective Hours and Metro Hours..." "Well, it's okay. We'll figure it out."
Tim winks to her as he departs, echoing Lucy's words to Tamara when they were first confronted with the difficulties of navigating work and love.
"Is that the sign up list for the Detectives exam?" "Two weeks to go." "I'll be ready." "I have no doubt about that."
Nyla has been a champion for Lucy for a long time. She was the first one to see Lucy's aptitude for undercover, and she's the one who prepped and primed her for her first solo op.
Love seeing women supporting women. There are too many shows that pit woman-against-woman in the name of drama.
Yes, it happens. I had a coworker once who was the most backstabbing person you could ever meet. I once told my boss that I thought she was coming for my job. My boss, of course, told me I was overthinking.
Two weeks later my boss called me into her office to tell me that I was right. Yeah, I knew I was right.
But there were also really amazing women who I worked with—women who uplifted you, who helped you when things were tough, who excelled at the give-and-take of being coworkers.
It's nice to see that type of relationship amplified on a show like this.
"No way you make Top 12. One of the detectives has it out for you. No matter how well you do on the written, they're going to sink you on the Oral."
Smitty might be the unreliable narrator 90% off the time, but that 10% can be crucial, and Lucy's smart enough to be aware of that.
"So you won't be making detective. But, um, there's other career paths, right?"
Aaron can be direct, and that music cue made it seem like we needed to smile and laugh, but it felt pretty final, actually.
I don't want to see anything taken away from Lucy. She's put in so much work and watched as Nolan was promoted ahead of her. As her best friend was taken from her. She helped Tim get promoted.
But now it feels as if her own career is standing still, and I selfishly want more for Lucy than just Chenford.
I am not of the opinion that a relationship can fulfill your every need. In fact, I encourage my husband to go out with his friends and do things without me. I think it's healthy for us to have different interests, even though many overlap. He supports the fact that I love working and abhor the idea of being a stay-at-home mother.
Our relationship works for us. Everyone wants something different in their relationship. But I feel like Lucy really wants to do something more and move forward in her career. And if that's what she wants, I want it for her.
Ball Camera
Anyone else having a BB-8 geek out moment? Or is that just me? Also, we've come a long way from Tim pushing his chest camera into a room with his baton.
"Hey, Harper. Uh, Tim is still in with IA." "Look the Officer Involved Shooting Interview is very thorough. Tim's fine."
Tim is not fine, and his girlfriend wife knows it. Maybe he'll be fine career-wise, but Lucy's worried about more than that. She's worried about his state of mind.
"Hey, Chen. I've got news for you." "It's not a great time Smitty." "It's about the Detective exam. The detective blocking you is Prim."
Ohhhh, that name. I remember that name. From the five-player trade. Lucy tried so hard to be discrete, but as soon as it got out there, it was only a matter of time for the Cop Gossip of this bizarre High School extension to take over.
"I did warn you." "I know."
And we all knew that it was going to come back around, at some point. Is it wrong that I wish Lucy didn't have to deal with this fall out?
And much as this is Nyla's "I told you so" moment, she takes no pride in it. That's why we don't hate her in this moment. She is right and she doesn't like it any more than Lucy does.
"Hey. Let him talk to Grey first." "Yeah."
Lucy wants so much to go to his side. Her Tim Sense is tingling as soon as he walks by, but his brain is on the next thing that needs to be done. He's on autopilot, and she can see it.
Look, Tim's no stranger to having to pull the trigger. That doesn't make it any easier. Tim values human life, so ending one is never going to be a light matter.
And pulling the trigger on someone who wears the uniform? For Tim, that's gotta be even harder.
Remember, this is the guy who stayed inside the lines for years and stood by while racism ran rampant. He rationalized it away, right? But, then he started to really face and confront the darker elements and systemic injustices inherent to the Force.
This is another extension of that—a truly awful cop who used their influence, position, and authority to kidnap and murder little girls. Yes, Tim pulled the trigger because he was about to be the one buried if he didn't. But it doesn't make it any easier.
"Hey, you know you had to take the shot." "I know." "Just because he wanted to die doesn't mean he wasn't dangerous." "I know."
Even Grey can see that Tim's veil is slipping. He is a human being, damnit, and he feels this shit.
Grey stands, trying to make a connection, to get closer to Tim, to approach him man-to-man. But the words coming out of his mouth echo typical talking points of the Badge.
Grey sighs, dropping the list of "reasons". He tries another tactic. My favorite tactic—asking.
I worked for a humanitarian non-profit for almost a decade, and my favorite part of the work was our policy of "Ask, Don't Tell". We never walked into a disaster zone with a game plan. Too many organizations do that, and it doesn't address the immediate needs of the community.
Instead, we would ask what was needed. And I think in life that's also a damn good strategy.
"Is there anything I can do?" "Can I get back to you on that?" "Take your time."
This I love. Two men meeting in the middle. Acknowledging that sometimes shit just sucks and nothing you can say will change that.
But, also, Grey's abandoning the "just throw things at it until something sticks" tactic to earnestly ask what Tim would have him do. And that's so much deeper than empty words.
And the fact that Tim Bradford, who never asks for help, leaves it open ended? That's growth.
Yes, it's important that he lets Lucy in more and more. But it's also important that he lets others in. This isn't just about growing in a romantic relationship, but growing as a person.
Yes, I know I harp on this a lot. But I've seen too many good people backslide horribly because they invested all their growth in a relationship rather than in themselves.
Relationships are great. I'm in one. I'm in a damn good one. But my healing and growth are mine and have to be separate from Matthew. If he dies tomorrow, suddenly, my progress can't die with him. I have to be able to stand on my own.
And that's what I wish for Lucy and Tim. The standing on their own part, I mean.
"You're a badass. And I'm no slouch."
I need to do Wopez next. I keep saying that when I catch up on Chenford, I need to go back and do Wopez. And lines like this really make me wanna.
"How are you doing with everything?" "I'll be okay."
It's taken a while, but Tim and Lucy have worked their way up to light PDA in the workplace, and I love it for them. Likely, they aren't seeing as much of each other at home, so it's natural that it might leak out more when they're in public.
I love how Lucy briefly has both her hands on his arm. There's something resembling a hug, there, that I love.
She know Tim well enough to know he doesn't want to hug it out at the station. But she's still trying to find her own ways to let him know that she's there for him.
Also: Is this the episode of the comeback clothes!? Because that jacket is totally the one from Season 4, Episode 3 when Tim and Lucy were discussing how people might get the wrong idea about them if she became his aide, right?!
I know one of y'all will correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm leaving it in, because I'm fairly convinced.
Also, Tim and Lucy, y'all didn't need to worry about people getting the wrong idea. We all got the right idea, and y'all are adorable together.
"I want to be helpful." "I know. Thank you."
Her little hand on his chest (right over his heart) is so sweet, but also a little sad. Because she knows that's the part of him that's really hurting right now.
Also, I love Tim thanking her. We're a long cry from all the times when Tim would tell Lucy she was overstepping in the past. Because, they're partners in life, now, and this is her place.
And his little arm tap? It's so cute to get to see them start to be more tactile.
Remember, this wasn't a typical transition. They went from being best friends—the most important relationship in each other's lives—to one-and-only. They had to transition everything over from a very intimate point, already, and add in the layers and figure out what felt right for them as a couple.
But, selfishly I'm loving the light PDA. Feels just about right for them.
Plus, it's more than either of them typically displays at the station with past love interests. Yes, I know there was one kiss way back with an ex of Tim's, but he wanted out of that, so it doesn't count.
"You need help studying? There's no way I would have have scored as well on the Sergeant's exam without you."
Oh, how I love a good call-back. This is going back to Season 2, y'all, and TO Tim era. And I adore the surprise on Lucy's face. She really wasn't expecting him to offer, and it's damn adorable that he did.
Lucy isn't giving up. She knows that Prim's got it out for her, but she's still going after this. And I'm damn proud of her.
"That's right. You owe me." "I don't owe you."
Ah, and there's Tim's bull-headedness coming back to remind us that he's not all warm and fuzzy. And, y'know, it made me chuckle. Because Tim didn't magically change over the course of the show.
Has he healed a lot? Yes. But at the core he was always a tough-outside, smoothie-inside... at least for his people. His trauma and pain caused him to wear that toughness as a roughly-patched-together armor.
And Look. At. Our. Babies. FLIRTING! Lucy even got the finger point in there!
"You owe me." "Okay."
Lucy gets a hand on his open shirt (wow, she has a thing for tugging at his clothing that's unexpected and yet totally in-character), and he's gone. Boy is gone for his girl.
Because Lucy probably wants to spend a little time studying up on other things before they get to the books. And Tim's totally onboard.
And has Lucy been wearing the Valentine's Day necklace most of the episode? It's so small that it's hard to tell, but I think she has. So, we're really owing some love to the Costuming Department this week. Thanks, y'all. We love you.
And I love you! Thank you for reading and taking this ride with me. It's been a really tough few weeks with illness and broken down cars (and bumped into cars) and juggling too many things. So, Chenford night is a nice respite for which I'm thankful.
Did it take Tim and Lucy a while to get comfortable? Sure. I posit this was the first episode written after we got a taste of post-coitus Chenford and folks started vocalizing what they wanted to see out of the duo, because I feel like about 12 boxes were ticked in that first scene alone.
I'm not going to get worked up about the promo for the next episode. If TPTB want to rip my heart out and stomp it, they wouldn't be the first. Actually, the wouldn't be in the first two dozen TPTB to do that.
No, I'm not kidding. When you dream of someday working in television, you watch a lot of television. Inevitably, I ship someone in every show.
But The Rookie's track record with core ships does give me some hope. A little. A microscopic amount. And that's enough, for now.
Stay kind, beautiful humans. I hope to see you on the next.

And That’s What You Did, He Of Course Let Go And Held His Jewels. But You Ain’t Done Just Yet.
You Grab His Tail And Toss Him Onto The Ground, Smacking Him Into Ground A Couple Of Times Like The Hulk.
Soon After, You Started To Drag Him To The Railing Of The Stairs. And Pushed Him Off Of Said Railing Onto The Ground Below.
Most Likely Breaking A Leg Or His Arms.
With The Commotions You Caused, Everyone Else Ran To The Nosies Of Pain And Groans.
Then Seeing Their Youngest Brother, Writhing In Agony.
Lucifer Looked Up And Saw You Staring Down From The Top Of Stairs. He Yelled For You To Come Down, Which You Did.
After You And Belphegor Were Inspected Of Injuries.
You Started To Explain The Story Of What Happen, Your Heritage And Origins.
Afterwards, You Both Went On Better Terms And He Made His Formal Apology With A Pact. And Now, You Both Have A Running Joke Of Stairs.
Heheh, I Love Making Mc Being A Total Menace To All People Around Them!!! (✿╹◡╹)

hi it’s me again! i finished the kennedy book half an hour ago and i am still reeling.
you weren’t kidding about the last chapters. like the farewell party is a bittersweet anecdote, but then the epilogue is just absolutely crushing. what a brutal note to end on. the true endpoint is the paragraph in the acknowledgements where he thanks his coauthor for freeing him from the emotional prison he was in. phrase practically verbatim. like oh my god.
that thing you said about what’s not said really did nail the sort of very careful sidestepping of….giving his opinions, maybe? there is just a very deliberate sort of distance with which he describes any events, and so you really notice the barest hints of something more. (more than anyone can ever know, mr. hill? care to elaborate??? it’s the implication that they kept many secrets together and also his enduring loyalty to her that keeps us from learning hardly any of them.) i was reminded of the perception of the kennedys as american royalty because he really talks about her like she was a queen. jackie kennedy through his lens is beautiful and gracious and willful and truly given the royal treatment.
speaking of the royalty metaphor, aristotle onassis is two steps from being a mustache-twirling villain hoping that our brave knight clint hill dies a watery death under a yacht??? unprompted??? like, man. come on. honestly there’s a fascinating emotional thread in here about how he can only fully express feelings of protectiveness when they’re expressed by the president first.
anyway. this is a long ask. sorry. i feel like i should have something profound to say about the assassination chapters because of how significant the event is in history but i don’t yet. i probably sound unhinged but man. this was real life and this is how he chose to tell this story. what even was that.
THANK YOU.
re: last chapters: i want to look into what happened between him and his coauthor (they're married now!) but i haven't yet. i'm still feeling my feelings about the whole thing. can you imagine not reading the acknowledgements?? the acknowledgements that provide the only ounce of comfort amid the hurt of the last third of the book??
re: "MORE THAN ANYONE CAN EVER KNOW": i purposefully haven't shared that quote because divorced from its context you don't get the impact. to me that says he either totally had a thing with her but won't talk about it because he's an honorable man, in the same way he won't offer any kind of "no yeah the warren report was bullshit and the shots came from two different directions" confirmation, or he wants us to *think* something happened even if it didn't. i mean it's not like it was a secret that JFK and Jackie had affairs with other people. a great many of those people have written memoirs specifically about boning one or more of the Kennedys. so many in fact that it's basically a subgenre.
also there's some irony in the way he depicts Jackie. she didn't like to be written about. at all. ever. and there's more than one instance where he's, you know, an 80 year old man being a bit patronizing (in an otherwise very sensitively and thoughtfully written book), with all the mentions of mischief and little-girlishness. and so i keep thinking about how Jackie would have felt about this particular depiction, which despite the glossy nostalgia over the whole thing and I Love Lucy-esque antics, is a pretty nuanced depiction, at least compared to others i've read. he manages to revere her, nearly worship her, but still portray her vices, not as faults but as even more reasons he loved her. i don't know, man. it just feels weird to stumble upon a true story of what i thought were fictional feelings.
re: "he can only fully express feelings of protectiveness when they’re expressed by the president first": HOLY SHIT YOU'RE RIGHT. i'm still thinking about that scene where he takes the film out of that photographer's camera and JFK is just like, "ummm we can't make it seem like we're denying the press access to us, so we're gonna have to blame you," which prompted Hill to question his professional loyalty to the president against his personal loyalty to Jackie, and also it made me think, what would happen if he had to shoot someone? would he get blamed for that too? was he really only there as a human shield, able to protect but not truly defend?
re: "what even was that": WHAT EVEN WAS THAT.

Hi I just wanted to say that I read the second part of the Lucifer stuff (idk what to call it; a fic? one-shots? simply ideas? idk what to call it, so the general "stuff" it is lol) and I gotta say that this was my favorite part of the whole thing: "Lucifer just took in a deep breath, brought his hands up to squish his cheeks, and let out a screech before running circles around the room. Eleanora squawked, turning to watch the devil king lose his mind. “Why, why, why, whyyyyy!? Why did you tell her you had a surprise for her!?”
“...So you couldn’t duck out?”
He skidded to a halt, the floor squeaking against his heels, and he looked to see her grinning goofily at him, pointing at one of the many piles of rubber ducks that were in his room. “Uh-huh. I see what you did there. You think you’re hilarious, don’t’cha?”
The pun, the mental photo of Lucifer screaming and running like around like a chicken with its head cut off, the callout for using a pun? Priceless. Love it all to death. I also had an idea for you, if you want it? I just had this thought of El, in a moment of both utter self-loathing and sheer bravery, decides to confess to Lucifer using a song. The one in particular I was thinking of? "Door" by I Don't Know How But They Found Me. Idk, I was listening to the song, and I felt it sort of fit them? Or the vibes, at least. Just the mental image of her looking at him and singing the line, "If you just tell me what you think about me, I can collect all my things from the floor" gives me goosebumps and also doe-eyes because I'm imagining Lucifer basically in shock the entire song (it's a relatively short song don't worry abt it) because he's also deep in self-loathing and doesn't understand what she sees in him because he doesn't really see it in himself. I dunno, do with the idea what you will *shrugs*
Either way, I absolutely loved this and can't wait for more, if you decide to write more for Lucifer! :3
“If I’m out of line, just show me the door; I promise you I won’t come here no more. If you just tell me what you think about me, I can collect all my things from the floor. Promise the next time you take my hand… is to show me the door.” I HAD TO LOOK THIS SONG UP AND NOW MY HEART IS IN PIECES. OOF.
IT SUITS THEM SO WELL???? El has already had a couple moments of, “Frick, was this out of line? Am I crossing the line by singing this song??? I’m just a human, he’s the devil, I probably shouldn’t be saying all this stuff but I wanna help him” which can be kinda seen in Luci’s pov whenever she hesitates before singing or resting a hand on his shoulder to comfort him.
And LUCIFER HAS MADE A SHOW OF TAKING HER HAND. Hell, EL has made a show of it.
I dunno why, but the hand holding is becoming a very prominent thing between them, haha. Like when he sings to her and brings her close to dance, or when she grabs his hand to stop him from anxiously nibbling his fingers to bits and when she was singing to him to calm him down. It’s just turning into a thing.
I feel like the song might actually happen after they’re “unofficially” together??? Because El doesn’t really know what he’s thinking or how he views her. Basically a, “What are we?” Kind of moment where it’s obvious to everyone except themselves that they’re dating/have feelings for each other.
Also!! I have posted the two chapters to Ao3 so it’s technically a fic now, lol.
I’m working on the next chapter right now. We be getting El’s pov now!!! (But it’s still in third person because it started with third person and I must commit to the bit, even though it feels super weird)
Oh gods. I have this image in my head of El, like, kissing the back of Lucifer’s hand (or even just his fingers in this super gentle and sweet way) before whispering the song and trying not to cry because WHAT IF REJECTION!???? And Lucifer is just stunned silent, and when he doesn’t react or say anything she goes to pull away but he snatches her hand back and starts his own song. Whatever that is.
I have a bit of an idea for it.
“I think I love you~? A feeling I thought I couldn’t have again, lost amongst the despair. I think I want you~ in ways I doubt that you know. You helped repair~ a bond that was once nearly broken, and… I don’t think I can let you go. But if this feeling is love, I… just don’t know.”
Buuut that’s all I got so far and it might just change.
Anyways. Yee. :3 El and Luci are chaotic beans.

All day, I have been thinking about arcs and what happens when they aren’t what you thought they’d be - for us or the characters - and I just made a post about that for Stranger Things here but for some weird pride reason I don’t care to unpack right now, I want you to know that I thought of this one first. Now that that’s out of the way, continuing on...
I know why Buck and Taylor said I love you. Because Buck’s arc isn’t to be loved. Because if you think deeper about it, that is a shit arc. It seems sweet, but it’s what he wants, not what he needs. He said it himself: he settled. He settled because he takes what he can get. He has been on this journey to be loved and convince someone to love him and to stay and to be willing to work at their relationship for him. And he got that. Taylor told him she loved him. She told him first. She was willing to stay, to work things out. And he left. he. left. He gave a whole speech on how real love is about staying and work and getting through the rough patches while in a rough patch and then he broke up with her. He said to himself “this isn’t that. This isn’t real love. For me.”
Buck got what he always wanted and thought he would run off into the sunset. But he didn’t. So he started to ask why and the answer came: in all the time he spent begging people to want them, he never stopped to ask himself if he wanted them. I guess he just didn’t think that far ahead. He figured it would be so hard to just be loved that there would only be one person and that would be his one true love. I love the song “Not Like The Movies” by Katy Perry for Buck for this exact reason.
We see it when she first tells him she loves him. He makes an odd face as he says it back. Every time he says it again in third person, he stutters. He emphasized “I do love her.” As if to convince himself. As if it’s not something he thought he would ever have to consider if he didn’t expect it to be reciprocated anyways.
And he’s still chasing this functionality of relationship. He referred to his relationship with Taylor as “the most functional” he’s been in for god’s sakes. With Natalia, it’s that she sees him. Eddie does too is all I’ve been seeing on my dash. But guess what? That doesn’t even matter. There, I said it. It doesn’t. matter. Because that is a low bar for relationships.
Everyone in his life “sees him” in some way or another or at least seeks to understand them until they do. It’s that concept of “do you love them or do you love what they can do for you? do you love them or do you love how they treat you? are they the one or is the relationship just healthy?”
We joke about Buck kissing Lucy when Eddie left but we never talk about why Taylor wasn’t enough. It has nothing to do with Eddie at all. Because if she were enough (as a partner to him, not saying she isn’t “enough” as a person), Eddie would be out of the picture romantically. But it was because the relationship was healthy but just not compatible. People don’t always treat us right so when they do it feels like it should be the end all be all, but really it just teaches us something new to expect from people.
We could go on and on about how Eddie sees him and supports him and works and stays but the truth is, relationships are when you make something out of what you’ve found. It’s both. Buck and Taylor worked and it wasn’t enough. Buck found Abby and it wasn’t enough. Because you need both.
Buck and Eddie are going to last because of their support and effort. But that isn’t why it’s Eddie for Buck.
At the end of the day, it’s Eddie for Buck because Eddie loves the drama of telenovelas. It’s Eddie for Buck because Eddie is scared of Siri. It’s Eddie for Buck because Eddie plays detective on calls and eats s’mores straight out of the oven even if they burn his tongue and kisses his abuela on the cheek. It’s Eddie for Buck because he wants him. Just as much as it is because he stays.
I’ll end with this thought: It is beautiful and important to stay through hardship. But are you happy with them when there is none?

This is the third shot of them laying on their back? It’ll be fun to clip that together.
Well ok then.
I feel so betrayed and tricked but it was delulu of me to think they would make up that quickly!!! IT TAKES A LIE DETECTOR TEST FOR HIM TO ACCEPT THAT HE DOESNT LIKE THE IDEA OF HER DOING UC WORK? This is actually just so in character for them! This is actually just chenford being chenford because it took them going undercover as a couple to even CONSIDER the fact they have feelings for each other.

Chenford + argument about their relationship
A knock had appeared on Lucy’s front door. It was around eleven at night, so she wasn’t really expecting any visitors.
She ran her hand through her hair when exiting her bedroom, and the knocks continued. They ended up growing rapidly.
“Okay, okay, I’m coming!” She grumbled.
By the time she made it to the door, she stood on the tip of her toes to reach the peephole. Her eyes widened at the sight of Tim. She looked around her living room and began to step away from the door.
“Uh, one second!” She yelled, she rushed back into her bedroom and stood in front of the vanity to fix her hair, she has a bit of bed hair.
She came back to the front door, but the knocks still wouldn’t stop. The door clicked after she unlocked it. A small smile formed on her face when she opened the door and saw her boyfriend standing on the other side.
“Tim, hi — what’re you doing here?”
He shoved his hands into his pocket. He seemed tired, it was clear he was avoiding eye contact, he sighed as he looked down at the dark wooden floors.
“Luce, we need to talk.”
Lucy could hear her heart drop and shatter when she heard those words come out of his mouth. She stood in the doorway frozen for a moment, and then she snapped back into reality. “Oh…okay.”
She backed away from the door frame, leaving room for him to walk in. She watched as he entered her apartment. She gulped when she closed the door behind her back.
“…So, what’s up?”
“I had a talk with Grey this evening...” he admitted.
Lucy frowned. They’d been dating for about a month now, and they wanted to keep their relationship a secret for a few more weeks before coming clean, they planned on telling Grey, and then everyone else together, but apparently -- Tim had beat her to it.
“What? Why? I thought we planned on telling him together. You couldn’t have at least waited until I came back to work tomorrow?”
“I didn’t have to tell him anything. He called me into his office, and he told me that he knew about us.”
She paced back and forth in her living room, “...Great. Now he knows, so what do we do now? He’s probably gonna take this to I.A. -- or HR, or whoever else. It’s over for our careers.”
“That’s not exactly true, Lucy.”
She immediately stopped and her eyes widened as they trailed up from the floor, and then up at Tim, “What do you mean by that, Tim?” She could tell that something else had been bothering him, but he wasn’t exactly saying what it was, “...Tim, what are you not telling me?”
“Ever since our third date, I’ve been thinking about...expanding -- career-wise.”
“Tim,” she warned. She began to approach him slowly, waiting and waiting for him to finish his sentence, “What do you mean by ‘expanding?’”
His eyes scanned her face as his tongue ran against his teeth, he didn’t know how else to tell her, maybe they should’ve talked about it first before he made this huge decision, but he knew that she’d feel indifferent about it, but it’s the only way that they can be together without their careers being harmed.
“I put in my two weeks.” He finally admitted.
Her eyebrows furrowed downward as her voice grew, “You did what? Why?”
“Because Lucy -- we both knew that one of us couldn’t stay at Mid-Wilshire if we continued on with our relationship. And I see the way you smile every time you come inside the precinct, I didn’t want to take that happiness away from you. I mean -- it was either that or we’d both lose our jobs because of our relationship. And I know that you don’t want that either. So, I decided to leave.”
She covered her face, “Oh my god, Tim,” She groaned into her hands. she heavily sighed as she dropped her hands and looked into his eyes, “We could’ve at least talked about this before you ran and made this huge decision!”
“I did it for a reason, Luce! I knew that if I talked to you about leaving the precinct, that you’d find a way to stop me from doing it. I mean at the end of the day -- I’m doing this for us, and for your career.”
“Tim, can you just... forget about my career? As of right now -- I only care about you, your happiness, and your career. You love working at Mid-Wilshire, I shouldn’t be the reason for you to leave.”
“I’ve made my decision, Luce. And I knew that you’d react like this. I put in my two weeks and that’s final.”
She ran her hand through her hair, “God, you’re impossible,” she sighed.
He had briefly looked away from her, his eyes widened as he placed his hand over his heart, “Impossible? How am I being impossible, Lucy? I’m doing you a favor. I’m giving up my job for you, just so that we can be happy together. I wouldn’t do something like this if I didn’t love you. So, why can’t you just accept the change and move on from it?”

For the lyric prompt thingie :)
"Used to wear my sadness like a choker, yeah, it had me by the throat. Tonight, I feel I'm draped in it like a loose garment: I just let it flow..."
Loose Garment by MUNA
Lucy/Kate
Lucy leaving her appointment with the Kahuna, maybe? Idk this one always gives me "breakup era Kacy" vibes.
Thank you for this prompt! It was interesting to get inside of Lucy's head in those sad and angst-filled days, when we're used to seeing them so happy right now. Quite the challenge and I enjoyed it! I hope I did it justice. 😊

>>>>>
It’s early afternoon when Lucy steps out of the small shack, the sun at its brightest and warming everything it touches. It wraps around her like a blanket and she is grateful for the comfort it brings. Today was her third session with the Kahuna, and she has found each one opening her up a little bit more. It is not easy for her and she is left feeling exposed, a vulnerability she doesn’t like and usually tries to avoid.
But not this time.
She would never tell Ernie this, but he was right about the Kahuna. Her visits to him have been positive and she is working through the grief she feels at the end of her relationship. At the way it ended, and how it was snatched from her just as she was falling in love. It took a while for her to lean into the Kahuna’s practices and she still finds some of what he says a little kooky, but he is slowly teaching her to embrace it all, to let herself feel sad and angry and heartbroken instead of burying it deep inside and pretending like it doesn’t matter.
Because it does matter.
Abandoning her car, Lucy wanders across the street towards the water. She has no intention of stepping foot on the sand, of course, but the beach will be busy, full of day trippers and holidaymakers, and she isn’t ready to go home to a silent apartment just yet. She grabs a cup of shaved ice from a nearby cart, choosing a pineapple topping – a subtle defiance to Kate’s dislike for the fruit – and finds an empty bench to sit on.
Leaning back, Lucy looks out across the water at the bodies swimming through the waves and the boards that bob up and down on the surf. She inhales deeply, taking in the smell of the sand and sea – familiar to anyone who lives on a tropical island, but stirring new memories now. Of being roused on a Saturday morning with salty kisses, of droplets of seawater falling onto her chest, of unwanted grains of sand making their way into the bed.
It causes Lucy to feel overwhelmed with a loneliness that threatens to bring tears to her eyes. She blinks them back, even though she knows the Kahuna would tell her to let them fall, because she’s still Lucy Tara and she isn’t someone who cries in public over a broken heart. She doesn’t fight the ache in her heart though, instead letting herself feel sad until it is ready to subside.
Her cup of shaved ice is starting to melt in the heat and Lucy takes a bite, enjoying the sweetness of the syrup. She still remembers the look on Kate’s face when she had presented her with breakfast, only to turn her nose up at the way the juice from the pineapple had – in Kate’s words – infected all the other fruits and pastries on the plate. She still remembers the way Kate had tipped her head back and laughed when Lucy had pointed out that this is why it pays to make too much food for breakfast, because at least she’d have options.
God, she misses that laugh and the way Kate’s face lights up when she smiles.
Lucy hasn’t seen her since her apology in the bullpen and she is pretty sure that Kate is avoiding coming by, despite being the FBI’s NCIS liaison. She sometimes finds herself listening out for the sound of clipped heels on the hard floor or waiting for the waft of floral perfume that gives away her presence – disappointed when it doesn’t come. She berates herself for craving her company, tells herself it makes her weak, but the Kahuna is teaching her that it is okay to miss her and that forgiveness is the first step towards healing.
She wants to heal.
With the sun getting stronger, Lucy wipes her brow and stands up, throwing her empty cup into the nearby trashcan and heading to her car. It is like she is on autopilot as she drives the familiar coastal road to the tall apartment block that she knows so well. She pulls into an empty parking space outside and takes the elevator to the twelfth floor.
Pausing outside the door, her bravery wavers a little, but she forces herself to lift her hand and knock sharply three times.
There is a patter of bare feet on hard wooden floors and the click of the lock, and she braces herself as the door opens.
“Lucy.” Kate’s voice is full of surprise and she shakes her head, confused. “What are you doing here?”
“I forgive you,” Lucy says, the words falling from her mouth before she can stop them.
Kate stares at her, dumbfounded at her unexpected visit, and Lucy feels the need to fill the silence.
“You said you were sorry and I… I forgive you,” Lucy says.
With those three words, she feels some of the weight of her grief lift: the first step to healing.
“You do?”
Lucy nods. “I don’t wanna be mad any more, it’s too hard,” she admits. “And we still have to work together, right?”
Kate smiles – a quick upturn of lips that never reaches her eyes, which have always given away everything she is feeling. There is an awkwardness between them that Lucy wishes wasn’t there but she can’t bring herself to let down all the walls she has built up since the last time she was at this door. It is going to take a lot more sessions with the Kahuna before she is able to do that.
“Well, I should go,” Lucy says. “I guess I’ll see you at Pearl?”
“Yeah, I need to stop by and see Tennant on Monday,” Kate says.
Monday. At least Lucy will be prepared when she shows up.
She turns and starts to walk towards the elevator, pausing when Kate calls out her name.
‘Don’t say it,’ she thinks to herself. She remembers how close Kate was to declaring her love that night in the bullpen and Lucy had cut her off, knowing it is the one thing that might make her crumble; and she doesn’t want that. She holds her breath and turns.
“Thank you,” is all Kate says.
Lucy exhales slowly, before offering her a half-smile, the best she can do in the circumstances.
“I’ll see you, Kate.”

hi i'm here to make everyone listen to me talk about the beggar woman from sweeney todd bc i love that show and she's my favorite character(spoilers for the whole musical. also warnings for mentions of SA, attemped suicide and, obviously, murder.)
I have so much to say about her. First of all, I should point out that she has two musical motifs: her "alms, alms for a miserable woman," and the "my Lucy lies in ashes" that Todd sings during Epiphany. She also has her "don't I know you, mister?" which isn't really a musical motif but is very important. I’m also going to point out the fact that the first two patterns share a very, very similar note progression; they aren’t exactly the same, but they’re close.
We first see the Beggar Woman during No Place Like London, where she interrupts Todd and Anthony's conversation. It's during this where we first hear her "alms, alms, etc.," motif as well as the first of two times where she uses "don't I know you, mister?" on Todd. She is immediately shooed away. Anthony dismisses her as a "crazed beggar woman," saying that London is full of them. This is the first piece of Lucy/Beggar Woman being the same that we see.
We next see her appear as Lucy during Poor Thing. I'm not going too in-depth about this number due to the subject material, but it is important to her story. A few important things in terms of foreshadowing are: the audience seeing her face(the same as Beggar Woman's, in most productions), clues about what happened to her(poisoning herself after her SA by the Judge), and her stage directions in the first half of the song. In these stage directions, she's in the upstairs room of the main set piece, which becomes the barber shop. In this room, we see her open a window, care for a baby, do chores, etc(varies depending on staging). These directions might not seem important, but they are echoed while she's searching for Beadle in that same room during the final sequence. I'll circle back to that later.
After Poor Thing, she doesn't appear as Lucy again, only Beggar Woman. She next shows up during Ah, Miss, and speaks to Anthony, telling him of Judge Turpin and Johanna. This isn't super relevant, so I'll move on.
We next meet the Beggar Woman after one of the interlude Ballads, as she appears, asking a passerby for money. After they leave, Mrs. Lovett enters, mocking the Beggar Woman and saying that she "won't have any trash lingering around her establishment." This moment is crucial in establishing how the Beggar Woman and Mrs. Lovett view each other(as well as passing the Bechdel Test lol). They clearly dislike each other, which is confirmed further by Beggar Woman's multiple lines about the "devil's wife," referring to Lovett. This moment between the two of them also alludes to Lovett's love for Todd, and how she was jealous of Lucy.
The next time we meet her, she isn't singing, but the Beggar Woman is present during God, That's Good looking for food. That's literally it. Next section.
Right after God, That’s Good is the Johanna Quartet. In this song, we see Todd kill 2 people as they come into his shop for a shave, as well as sparing a third man due to having his family with him. In between these three days that we see pass, the Beggar Woman interjects twice, both times begging for passerby to listen and report the horrible smell coming from Lovett’s bakehouse to the police, calling it the “sign of the devil”(once again associating Lovett with the devil). The passerby brush her off, dismissing her warnings as the ramblings of a raving lunatic rather than a legitimate complaint(although it does seem that she got through to someone, or others noticed the smell; we know this because the Beadle’s reason for going to Lovett’s shop during Parlor Songs in the complaints of the smell of the smoke).
We don’t see her again until the Searching part of the Final Sequence, where she approaches the pie shop looking for Beadle, who died in there a few scenes before. She goes upstairs into the barber shop, still looking for Beadle. Once she realizes where she is, the stage directions specifically make sure to include that she begins to open a window, rock an imaginary baby, do phantom chores, mirroring Lucy’s stage directions from Poor Thing, as I mentioned earlier. Her singing becomes more and more frantic and rushed as she continues to call for Beadle, until Todd finds her in the room and asks her what she’s doing. The Beggar Woman tells him that “the stink of evil is here, sir, from below- her,” as he yells at her to leave. She calls for Beadle again, and when Todd yells at her again, she delivers her “don’t I know you, mister?” line again. After she says this, Todd notices the Judge approaching and kills the Beggar Woman.
Even after she dies, the Beggar Woman still has one more appearance. It is in the next part of the Final Scene, where Lovett tries to drag her body to the oven, just as Todd appears and questions as to why Lovett is desperately trying to hide the beggar’s face. Once he truly sees her face for the first time, it hits him. The whole show, Todd was desperately trying to exact revenge to avenge his wife. The wife that he thought had died, only to be the one to kill her in the end. Lovett maintains the fact that she never lied about Lucy’s death, only said that she poisoned herself. This culminates in her love confession, saying that she would’ve been twice the wife Lucy was.
Lucy’s character is tragic, because she really did nothing wrong, all she did was be pretty enough to attract horrible men who exiled her husband and raped her, simply to get their way. Not only did she have to go through that, she was left to rot, and attempted to poison herself. Her daughter was also taken from her, and raised by the very man who hurt her, only for that daughter to nearly have to suffer the same fate. I also have to add that, sadly, her death is simply a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and if she hadn't been in the barber shop as the judge was approaching, she would've lived.
Although she doesn't get as much stage time as others, Lucy is, honestly, an underrated character that I love a lot.
