Jedi culture & community fics, my beloved! They're a bit of a rare breed for what you're specifically looking for, specifically focusing on positive Jedi worldbuilding, so if anyone has genfic recs outside of the ones I know, please feel free to add them! But these should help scratch that itch for you, each of them has at least some focus on Jedi philosophy or how Jedi interact with each other or the lessons they teach! It's been awhile since I've read some of them, so there might be some that aren't quite as in-line with how I see the Jedi these days, but they're all ones I felt portrayed them pretty positively and they're all genfic (except one that I made an exception for) and all really lovely fics I remember enjoying for the Jedi worldbuilding aspects! And there are some that will make you absolutely melt with how much you love these characters and their beautiful culture, because by god if canon's not going to give us as much detail as we want, fandom will step up. And fandom made sure to not just focus on the disaster lineage--we love Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Ahsoka, we always want more of them, please don't stop writing Jedi worldbuilding with them!--but also Mace and Yoda and Quinlan and Qui-Gon and even some Jedi OCs get some love in these fics, which makes me want to explode with joy to see! Dooku didn't leave because of the Jedi.

At least, if you're going by George Lucas' word.

In deleted scenes of Attack of the Clones, when we learn about Dooku's departure and his values, there's no mention of the Jedi or "the Jedi Order as an institution".

And every time Lucas refers to Dooku's disenchantment and reason for falling, he doesn't mention the Jedi.

"When you realize that Dooku is Darth Tyranus, it explains what Darth Sidious did after Darth Maul was killed: he seduced a Jedi who had become disenchanted with the Republic. "[Dooku is] one of the few Jedi who became disenchanted with the Republic and left the order and he is leading a separatist movement." - Vanity Fair, 2002

"I wanted a more sophisticated kind of villain. Dooku’s disenchantment with the corruption in the Empire is actually valid. It’s all valid. So, Chris plays it as, 'Is he really a villain or is he just someone who is disenchanted and trying to make things right?'" - Starlog Magazine #300, 2002

He probably meant the Republic/Senate in that last one, but you get the point. And you're seeing the pattern, right?

Dooku's problem isn't the Jedi, it's the Republic.

He's become disenchanted with a system that - according to Lucas' prologue in the 2004 book Shatterpoint - worked for 1,000 years...

"For a thousand years, the Old Republic prospered and grew under the wise rule of the Senate and the protection of the venerable Jedi Knights."

... but has been rendered ineffective because of 1) senators becoming corrupt and 2) corporations gaining political power.

"But as often happens when wealth and power grow beyond all reasonable proportion, an evil fueled by greed arose. The massive organs of commerce mushroomed in power, the Senate became corrupt, and an ambitious named Palpatine was voted Supreme Chancellor."

That's the message Dooku runs on, when he rallies the systems to form the Separatist Alliance.

"By promising an alternative to the corruption and greed that was rotting the Republic from within, Dooku was able to persuade thousands of star systems to secede from the Republic."

The Jedi aren't really a factor in his decision to leave.

Why would they be? Their political status isn't very high, they're virtually powerless, as illustrated by the film's narrative and stated repeatedly by Lucas.

On the contrary, as we already established in this post, Lucas full-on confirmed that Dooku actually carries the sympathies of most of the Jedi. Again:

Most Jedi agree with Dooku, ideologically.

As far as the Jedi are concerned, the politicians are effing up the Republic, and it sucks because the Jedi see this but aren't allowed to interfere in the political process. They have to resort to looking for loopholes in their mandates to actually get stuff done.

That's what that whole "she's a politician" scene is meant to hint at. In the commentary of Attack of the Clones, Lucas uses a similar turn of phrase as he does with Dooku.

"[This scene gives us] a chance to talk a little bit about politics and the Jedi’s disenchantment with the political process, due to the corruption and the ineffectiveness of the Senate." - Attack of the Clones, Director’s Commentary, 2002

Considering all this, it becomes clear that the intended narrative surrounding Dooku's decision to leave the Order is not:

"The Jedi are dogmatic and asleep at the wheel except for Dooku, who is ahead of the curb and sees the system is flawed, so he left."

It's actually:

"ALL Jedi see the system is flawed, Dooku's the only Jedi who decided to take it a step further and leave the Order so he can try to get into politics himself and change things."

That's why they hesitate to accuse him of murder.

That's why in an earlier draft of the Attack of the Clones script, by the end of the second act, Mace STILL has his doubts that Dooku would sign a treaty with the Trade Federation to attack the Republic.

As far as the Jedi are concerned, Dooku is out there fighting the good fight, making noise because whenever they try to protest it falls on deaf ears... until his betrayal on Geonosis.

After all, let's not get it twisted: the Dooku we're introduced to in the films and The Clone Wars, isn't really just Dooku anymore.

He's Darth Tyranus.

A point Lucas makes sure to highlight in his Shatterpoint prologue:

"Unbeknownst to most of his followers, Dooku was himself a Dark Lord of the Sith, acting in collusion with his master, Darth Sidious, who, over the years, had struck an unholy alliance with the greater forces of commerce and their private droid armies."

It's not about doing the selfless thing for Dooku, anymore. He's knowingly part of the problem.

He's all about ambition, now. His personal goals are things like overthrowing Sidious and becoming the most powerful Jedi.

"[Anakin's] ambition and his dialogue here is the same as Dooku’s. He says “I will become more powerful than every Jedi.” And you’ll hear later on Dooku will say “I have become more powerful than any Jedi.” [...] It is possible for a Jedi to want to become more powerful, and control things." - Attack of the Clones, Director’s Commentary, 2002

"If you put two Sith together, they try to get others to join them to get rid of the other Sith. [When revealing the truth to Obi-Wan], Dooku's ambition is really to get rid of Darth Sidious. He's trying to get Obi-Wan's assistance in that and help in that, so that he and Obi-Wan could overthrow Sidious and take over." - Attack of the Clones, Commentary Track 2, 2002

Y'know? Selfish things.

Dooku - like all other Sith, and like the very corporations and Senators he had sworn to destroy - is consumed by his own greed.

#also functionally-speaking Dooku being a Jedi is done to highlight the ambiguity throughout the investigation on whether or not this is #a scorned ex-Jedi or a straight-up bad guy... you're never sure until the end of AOTC. But anyway the idea that Vader is too far into the dark to ever return is probably antithetical to the general idea of star wars, since, you know, the ending, but there was definitely a sliding escalation into him being convinced he'd gone too far this time. Even in AotC he has this moment of sheer panic and despair at fucking up supremely, but between Padme's acceptance and getting swept up with events he manages to brush it under the rug for a big. He can continue that uneasy trend when he kills Dooku and stuff, but he feels locked in when he helps kill Mace. At that point I think he gets into the mindset that he's gone too far this time but, actually, at this point I think if someone had talked him down, Obi Wan or Padme or Ahsoka- it might have worked. After he sacks the temple, now that- that is a point he refuses to return from, not without collecting his prize, no matter what anyone else can say. He's paid too high a price already. That wasn't done in fury, or panic, that was inescapably a choice. It can't have been for nothing. Still even then, he probably thought that if he just got what he wanted, if Padme asked him to walk away after that, then fine, but not yet, so she should shut up and stay out of it until the bargain is completed.

After he's killed her too, and Obi Wan left him, that's when he decides he just going to be evil now forever. Still, he will eventually come to the conclusion that he doesn't have to do all that. That it's never too late.

It's Monday and I'm really feeling it lol Can Obi-Wan relax with your fav Jedi/Mando/clone? I'm working for the weekend, someone needs to just sit and read or have a nice day with people they love

Some Obi-Wan & Quinlan.

Obi-Wan glared at his interloper, currently looming over him and holding Obi-Wan’s datapad over his head. “What are you doing?”

“You are going to give me an ulcer,” Quinlan said. “Literally. An ulcer. I can feel it growing right now.” He pressed his free hand against his stomach and let out an exaggerated groan. “I never thought you were capable of such cruelty.”

Obi-Wan wasn’t amused. In the slightest. “I need to finish the report for my latest mission, Quin.”

“You need to take a break before you break down. This may come as a surprise to you, but things like fatigue and stress do affect you the same way they do the rest of us.”

Obi-Wan sighed. “Quin. My datapad. Give it to me.”

Quinlan scoffed, turned off the datapad, and stuck it in his belt. “Not a chance.”

Obi-Wan had somehow forgotten just how supremely irritating Quinlan could be. How he’d managed to forget that was something of a mystery, because Quinlan was… Quinlan. Apparently the back to back missions he and Anakin had been sent on the last year were getting to him. He didn’t know why he was being ‘specifically requested’ so often, but he’d really prefer it stop happening. “What do you want, Quin?”

“I want you to relax. For an evening. That’s it.”

The thought filled Obi-Wan with longing. As it was… “I can’t.” He had already received a message requesting that he and Anakin prepare for another mission in three days, there was too much to do in the next three days to relax. Mace had been apologetic, but the request for Obi-Wan had come straight from the Senate.

Beyond that, he’d agreed to teach several hand to hand courses for the senior padawans—which was less hand to hand and more how to fight dirty—had several meetings with Senators from former missions, and a meeting with the council.

“You can, actually,” Quinlan said. “Aayla is inviting Anakin to join her and a few other padawans for a night in the holo-room for the night. Star gazing, supposedly, but we both know that’s just code for gossip. That means the two of us are free for the night.”

“I’m not going cantina hopping, Quinlan.”

Quinlan rolled his eyes. “Give me some credit, Obi-Wan. I know when you’re in a cantina hopping mood. I have deigned to suffer this evening, all for your sake, and we’re going to do something you consider relaxing.”

Obi-Wan crossed his arms over his chest, because this was sure to be good. Quinlan didn’t know the first thing about relaxing in a way that didn’t include chaos.

Obi-Wan would be lying if he said he didn’t at times egg Quinlan on, but he simply was too drained to do so.

“In this theoretical situation where I give in, what, exactly, do you plan on us doing?”

Quinlan’s expression shifted into one of exaggerated long-suffering. “We are going to watch the prime-time recording of the Phantasma Opera.” He shuddered. “I borrowed the recording from Windu and stole some tea from Depa and…” He paused for obvious emphasis. “I raided Siri’s kitchen for the little sugary monstrosities that you like. I risked my life for this evening.”

“Siri’s going to kill you,” Obi-Wan said. His mouth watered at the thought of the Alderaanian Delights Siri hoarded. “How about this, you give me those Alderaanian Delights and I get back to work. You can consider your mission accomplished.”

“Nope,” Quinlan said easily. “It’s everything or nothing.”

Obi-Wan was too professional to pout, but it was Quinlan; Quinlan had seen him do worse. He pouted.

Quinlan was unfazed. “So, I’m stealing your datapad and setting up in your quarters. You can choose to join me or you can languish here in the archives.” Quinlan sauntered away.

Obi-Wan groaned and buried his face in his arms on the table.

He was so tired.

Quinlan was such a pest, really. Obi-Wan didn’t know how he put up with him.

He forced himself out of the chair.

Quinlan was wrong; Obi-Wan didn’t need a break. But… well, Quinlan had clearly gone through a great deal of work—risking Siri’s wrath on top of it all—to give Obi-Wan a break. And he really had wanted to see the Phantasma Opera for quite some time.

He made it to his quarters to find Quinlan sprawled over his couch, Phantasma Opera queued up, tea steeping, and Alderaanian Delights in a box on his chest.

Obi-Wan forced Quinlan to move his legs before he sat down. “I need my datapad back.”

“Tomorrow,” Quinlan said. “I’m teaching your class on fighting dirty, already cleared it with the Masters—who were quite pleased to have an expert Shadow, by the way—so you have time then.”

Obi-Wan stared at his best friend, because tonight had been… appreciated for the intent behind it, but some part of Obi-Wan had been on edge trying to figure out what to do with the time he was losing. This… this was more than he had thought he could ask for. Some of his tension released.

“Thanks Quinlan,” he said quietly.

Quinlan smirked at him. “Don’t thank me too soon. I’m going to tell all of the padawans about the time you won a cantina fight because you freaked out the Duros smuggler by threatening to bite him.”

Obi-Wan laughed. “Have I told Aayla the story of the time we almost poisoned Yoda when we brought him the wrong type of frog as a life day present?”

“Not yet,” Quinlan said, a gleeful look entered his eyes. Mostly because the story was more hilarious than embarrassing, Master Yoda had been delighted by their ‘murder attempt’. “But you can tell her tomorrow at dinner.”

Obi-Wan thought about protesting, but with Quinlan taking on Obi-Wan’s classes, his whole day tomorrow was suddenly free; he could spare another evening with Quinlan.

He leaned back against the sofa and relaxed as the Opera started.

His tension faded away. For the first time in ages, Obi-Wan just… relaxed.

Kark. Quinlan had been right; he was going to be absolutely insufferable.

Protector | Shadowheart x Reader (Tav) Pt.1

A/N: Made shadowheart a paladin for this one as gift to the homie @shartstan97

It was difficult to see in the heat of battle, Karlach’s rage makes the air around her blur into a mirage as her engine cuts into overdrive her great axe catching a Sharran spell caster’s pauldron and digging through their chainmail. Shadowheart bashes her shield against another heavily armored Dark Justiciar, staggering it and slamming the side of her Warhammer against its helm effectively crunching the Justiciar’s composure. Gale’s hands burn with raw heat as he directs a fireball towards the opposite end of the hall, eviscerating the Justiciars and novices gathered there. You, however, were engaged in a fierce duel with Viconia, her eyes reflecting a cold fury that could only be fitting of one of Shar’s most devoted clerics.

You know this is not a fight at your advantage, everyone else had some level of radiant weaponry or spell craft at their disposal, you were but a rogue good with the blade, you had to be on the defensive with Viconia. She barely gives you the time to react as she lunges at you; mace winding back for a strike. You make the mistake of anticipating her strike as it turns out to be a feint, she steps in closer after your dodge and jabs it at your chest catching your leather armor, a buckle breaking under the strike. It’s enough to knock the wind out of your lungs, but you attempt to stay limber and regain your balance relative speed. VIconia attempts to feint you again, but you sidestep and whirl, dagger slicing through the air with the momentum of your flourish. Viconia seems to always be another step ahead and raises her shield and pushes into the attack, your dagger's edge glancing off the polished metal of the shield efficiently staggering you. The drow takes a moment and yells an incantation, and her mace starts to crackle, dark magic coils around the mace's sharp edges. Snapping out of your daze, you raise your other dagger to defend yourself, but Viconia’s strength bests you, her mace connecting just under your breast plate, ribs crunching painfully as you’re sent flying a couple meters back. You attempt to ease your fall with your arm, but it twists under you and bends at an angle it wasn’t intended to. Shadowheart is heard shouting in terror, most likely for you as you’re downed almost immediately from the supreme justiciar’s strike. A choked groan leaves your mouth as you attempt to get up, coughing up bloody globs of spittle as your arm caves in on itself, vision hazy as you see Viconia raise a hand with magic encircling her fingers, a necrotic spell ready to end your existence. Your eyes meet the drow’s with defiance, not willing to give her a look of surrender before death. Viconia only sneers in response “Shadowheart betrays Lady Shar to the likes of you? Very well, hopefully she sees the cost of her misguided actions.” She aims her hand at you as the wisps of shadow dancing along her psalm intensify.

“The only one seeing the cost of my actions today will be you Viconia” Your vision of Viconia is obscured by Shadowheart, who skids to a defensive kneel in front of you, her shield catching the spell and fizzing it out. The paladin murmurs a brief chant, and you feel your body infuse with minor healing magic, stabilizing the immediate bleeding. Viconia readies herself and starts to cast another spell, but Shadowheart is quick to react, she leaps to her feet, armored boots cracking the stone floor beneath her and charges Viconia, her warhammer and shield glowing with holy radiance. Viconia stops her spellcasting in a meek attempt to raise her shield though it is no match for the paladin’s charge. Metal armor and shield crashing into Viconia and the momentum doesn’t stop as she is pinned and smashed into the nearest wall. Shadowheart tosses her shield down before reaching with a gauntleted hand gripping Viconia by the collar and slamming her against the wall, hoping that her mother superior was in as much pain as she looked. The paladin glances briefly in your direction and is relieved to find that you are being helped up by Karlach and Gale, Karlach clumsily tipping a healing potion in your mouth. The half elf once again turns her focus on Viconia who opens her mouth “Why, Shadowheart? We are your true family.” Shadowheart scowls and applies pressure against Viconia eliciting a pained breath from the drow. “I will be asking the questions, all hopes of reconciling went out the window when you attack my friends and the light of my life, there is one thing you have left to owe me. My parents location, If you any shred of decency in your conscience left, you will at least grant me this peace” Viconia’s lips quiver as she struggles to breathe out a reply and points weakly at the door “In there you will find them, now end me, send me to lady Shar’s embrace” Shadowheart's visage slips into something eerily calm as her eyes begin to glow with radiant magic and when she speaks her voice reverberates softly with a quiet strength “May you burn before you find benevolence in darkness” sacred flames begin to lick up Shadowheart’s gauntlet before spreading across the drow’s body, the dark elf panics as she struggles against the unyielding grip of her old pupil. Viconia’s body is turned to ash in a matter of seconds with the holy flames burning eagerly to sear their enemy. Shadowheart shakes the soot of her armor and grabs her discarded shield, walking back in your direction, her hackles lowering as her emerald eyes meet yours. You are clutching on to Karlach as a makeshift crutch trying to smile reassuringly through the pain at your lover in shining armor. Shadowheart only grimaces when she takes in the state of you. Torn armor, leather caked in blood, and one of your arms hangs at an odd angle, she then looks to Gale who is already opening a portal to camp. “I’m out of magic I’m afraid otherwise I’d be able to ease your pain, but I found where my parents are being kept, this is something I need to do. You can be there with me if you like, but I won’t fault you for nursing your injuries at camp.” You and Karlach look to each other before looking back at Shadowheart you harden your expression back into something more appropriate for the atmosphere “After we fought hard to get you here, there’s no way we’re not going with you now” and you sent a pointed look at Gale who sighs before closing the portal. Shadowheart smiles and you’re quick to notice the tears welling in her eyes though she is quick to turn on heel as she marches towards the circular door at the epicenter of the wall “If you say so.”

I've been a little slow on getting out new STAR WARS fic recs out, but in my defense it's because I've been reading a bunch of longer fics lately. In the spirit of "there's a special feeling to those fics that consume you and make you stay up until 3am because you can't put them down", here's a list of some of the ones I've loved or am in the middle of reading and they are haunting my thoughts and I need to inflict that on everyone else. "The idea of it..."

This is obviously a reference to the ol' argument:

"The Jedi weren't bad but the Jedi Order as an institution needed to go."

So as a quick reminder I thought I'd point out:

1) George Lucas describes the Jedi's eradication as a sad thing, not something sad-but-necessary:

"[The] Jedi getting killed through the Order 66 of the clones is just done as one of those kind of inevitable pay offs in terms of getting rid of everybody, the Emperor is getting rid of all his enemies, but there’s a certain inevitability of it all and a sadness to it. - Revenge of the Sith, Director’s Commentary, 2005

2) Out of 770 George Lucas quotes, I've never seen him refer to the Jedi Order as "an institution" once.

He does refer to the Republic itself as an institution.

"[In The Phantom Menace one of the many storylines is] the story of a young queen who's faced with the total annihilation of a people, and how she can get a sluggish political institution to pay attention to what's going on." - Premiere, 1999

He might be referring to the Senate instead of the Republic as a whole, but the point stands: he's not talking about the Jedi.

Which tracks with what Lucas defined as Dooku's reason for leaving the Order: his disenchantment with the Republic/Senate, not the Jedi themselves.

But let's go slightly further:

The Jedi Temple was designed as a place of worship that would contrast with the corporate coldness of the Senate.

Also, the Jedi were originally designed as a more organized police force. As the script evolved, they were turned into peacekeepers, diplomats.

Mace's room was redesigned so as to not convey that the Jedi were mired in bureaucracy and protocol.

And when describing the political situation of the Prequels, Lucas doesn't blame the Jedi, but rather the corporations and Senate:

Wow, it's looking like not only is the "Jedi Order as an institution needed to go" narrative not a thing per Lucas, but

3) Lucas went out of his way to make it clear that the Jedi aren't the issue, here, the Republic/Senate is.

So how did we get this narrative?

Well, it comes from a generation of fans and Star Wars creators who were not the target audience.

You know the type. It's the kind who, when asked if they like the Prequel Trilogy, will respond that they liked...

... but not the execution.

AKA they disliked the Prequels, but then EU books and The Clone Wars came out and provided them with enough material to form a headcanon justifying why they didn't like the Jedi, despite wanting to: it's because the Jedi are meant to be disliked! Totally!

The Jedi failed as an institution is an idea that comes from authors who wanted to engage with the material (it IS Star Wars, after all) but not the narrative that George Lucas had crafted, whose work then influenced older fans who preferred the author's retconned version of the story to the original one.

The rest is history.

As Prequels producer Rick McCallum put it:

"The myth begins on paper. During preproduction, filming, and postproduction, the myth becomes visible through the work of hundreds of dedicated people. Following the film's release, the myth becomes public and the public makes it its own." - Rick McCallum, Mythmaking: Behind the Scenes of Attack of the Clones, 2002

ok so this is a fic i might actually write at some point, because i have Feelings about the jedi being a family and anakin's apparent insistence that biological ties overrule all.

(also mace is still obi-wan's finder in this because I LOVE HIM)

so. obi-wan's from stewjon. we know very little about stewjon canonically, so for the sake of this fic, it's an isolationist planet that is extremely hostile to force-sensitives. mace rescued toddler obi-wan from an attempt by town elders to drown him. obi-wan's the only stewjoni jedi in the order. they don't know if this is because stewjon doesn't have a high percentage of force-sensitives or if it's because those who are born force-sensitive don't usually make it off the planet.

but mace has his suspicions.

which is why he's really, really not pleased when the senate forwards orders a request for a jedi to wrangle separatist sentiment on stewjon. they will only accept a stewjoni jedi. if they must have one of those demons on planet, then they want someone who's at least tentatively connected to the planet. it's meant to be a diplomatic mission. but it's one of those diplomatic missions that seems like it will end in blasterfire.

so both the 501st and 212th both end up heading to stewjon.

cody and the 212th are slightly twitchy. their general has a really bad habit of getting kidnapped / horrifically injured / running off so they can't watch his back, and he's told them about stewjon and his particular background with the planet, so they're... hm. ready for anything.

(also ofc this is codywan because i am who i am.)

anakin is a whole other story.

he is simply thrilled, and he makes no secret of it. he can't wait to meet obi-wan's real family, he keeps saying. wonder if they're as stubborn as you, right, obi-wan? is this where you got your love of tea from? i can't wait to meet your real parents, obi-wan- do you have siblings, do you know?

obi-wan, meanwhile-

i don't know if they're stubborn, he says. i don't remember them.

i got my love of tea from master qui-gon, he says. he taught me how to brew and how long to steep and brought me to the best shops on the lower levels.

i do have siblings, he says. you've met them. you've met quinlan and bant and luminara and-

anakin won't hear it.

ahsoka starts spending more time around obi-wan. she asks him more questions about his padawanship. about master qui-gon. about his crechemates. all in an effort to ease some of the tension from his shoulders. and it works! he tells her, and anyone else who wants to listen, and the room is filled with disbelieving laughter and i have to ask general vos for pictures, sir, i won't believe this without proof-

and then they arrive on stewjon.

blah blah plot happens, anakin is stubbornly ignoring everything obi-wan says about the jedi being his family because, well, of course he would say that, he doesn't know what it's like to have a proper family, a real family-

then, a few days after their arrival, an elderly couple approach anakin.

they're obi-wan's parents, they tell him. they've been looking for him for ages. he clearly loves you, young man- well, as much as he can, we know what those jedi are like- could you please help us set up a meeting with him?

and anakin thinks-

i knew it.

of COURSE they were looking for him. of COURSE they still wanted him, of COURSE they still loved him- obi-wan simply didn't know, or maybe he'd been misinformed, but no one should ever have to live without the love of a parent-

so he says yes.

when he brings the matter up to obi-wan, obi-wan tells him absolutely not.

(but obviously, obviously, he just doesn't know-)

so he sets up a meeting anyway. lies to obi-wan, lies to the others, and tells the parents the truth. they clasp his hands, teary-eyed with gratitude- thank you, thank you, they tell him, we just want our son back, and anakin walks away feeling so supremely pleased with himself-

a couple of hours later, cody asks him if he's seen obi-wan.

he's not picking up his comm, cody says, brow furrowed. we'll be late for the next meeting.

anakin tells him, then. reassures him. leave them alone for a bit, will you? they haven't spoken to each other in years. it's bound to be emotional.

cody stares at him.

yes, sir, he says. of course, sir.

anakin claps him on the shoulder and walks off. cody watches him go.

then he turns around and breaks into a run.

the room is empty, when he arrives, and there are broken needles on the floor.

cody doesn't need to have them tested to know he'll find traces of force suppressants.

(like poison, his general had told him, and being blinded all at once. like having your heart torn clean out of your chest.)

he has them tested anyway.

he's right.

cody, technically, outranks general skywalker. this is the first time he's ever taken advantage of the fact.

stuff happens. they find him. he is...

Not In Good Shape.

(the demon must be torn out by force. drowned out. beaten out. they only wanted their son back.)

do you understand? they cry, as troopers force them to their knees, as doors are blown open, searching- we only wanted our son back!

anakin holds his saber to their throats and snarls you lied, you lied, you told me you loved him-

of course we do, they say. of course we do. we're his family.

obi-wan doesn't want to talk to anakin, when he wakes up three days later in the medbay. he doesn't even want to see him.

he wants his family. he wants to go home.
