Hi there! I just wanted to tell you that your analysis of Izuna not accepting Hashirama's offer of 'peace' was really good and made so much more sense than some of the arguments I have seen in the fandom complaining about Izuna not placing his trust in the Senju even though he was completely justified in his suspicions. It was detailed and helped me a lot in understanding Izuna's choice back there and how this fandom forgets that Hashirama can only heal himself and not others.

If you don't mind can I ask to hear your thoughts on what would have happened if Tobirama and Izuna switched roles that day. Do you think Hashirama would have gone berserk at losing his last brother? How do you headcanon his reaction to be?

Hi there! First of all, This ask has been sitting in my drafts for way too long, my apologies. I hope my answer will at least a little bit satisfying for you, anon.

I agree with you, Izuna was justified in his mistrust. I think that Hashirama being able to heal others is nothing but a headcanon that for some reason is – by some people – accepted as canon, even though it's not.

Now, I'll try my best to answer your question, but before I do that, I have to say this post is sligthly critical of Hashirama's character (although I am analysing canon here), so be warned.

Do you think Hashirama would have gone berserk at losing his last brother?

I'll start with this question if you don't mind, because I feel like answering this question is crucial in order to answer the rest.

Short answer: No, I don't think he would have gone berserk. It would certainly hurt him a lot (he did want to protect his siblings like Madara, at least as child), but I personally don't think he would have gone berserk.

Long answer:

We saw Hashirama reacting to two of his brothers dying (Itama and Kawarama) and I wouldn't say Hashirama went berserk in either case. He cried and he mourned their loss, of course, but in both cases, his reaction was still relatively calm (look at Madara's reaction, when Hashirama tells him he lost Itama, Madara looks perplexed, shocked, perhaps sad and emphatetic, but other than that his reaction is very calm as well).

Shinobis are thought to hide all their emotions on the battlefield. Look again at Madara's reaction, this time to losing Izuna – given the fact his last brother was literally bleeding out in his arms, he still relatively managed to remain his calm and focused nature. The only sign of distress and/or lack of calm and focus could be the fact he left the battlefield while the members of his clan were still there.

Now, this was when Hashirama was still a child. Let's look at him as an adult:

Hashirama as an adult was given two options by Madara (although he still had the third option of actually killing Madara). And he chose to sacrifice himself. This means he valued Tobirama's and Madara's life (but also his dream) and chose to – instead of them – sacrifice himself. What's interesting about that scene though, is that Tobirama seemed unsure what will be Hashirama's choice. Tobirama had no problem telling Hashirama to "shut up", but here he's asking him what Hashirama will do? I find that a bit strange. Did Tobirama in some way believe Hashirama might actually sacrifice him there? I do not know the answer, it would be more of a guess, but given the fact that later on Hashirama sweared he would dispose anyone for the sake of the village, I wouldn't be surprised if Tobirama in some way...actually wasn't sure Hashirama wouldn't sacrifice him.

So, let's summrize my points so far: Hashirama grew in a times where shinobi weren't allowed to mourn, were thought to hide their emotions and at the end oh his journey, he was willing to sacrifice anyone who dared to oppose Konoha. All of these lead me to believe that while losing Tobirama would definitely hurt him (it probably hurt him to lose Madara too), he wouldn't have gone berserk.

Now, do I think Hashirama would still want to create the village? Yes, I kind of do – he still wanted to create the village after both Kawarama and Itama dying, Madara was the one who chose Izuna and his clan over their "pipe" dream, so I honestly think that losing Tobirama, while it would be horrible, wouldn't sway Hashirama from his dream.

In the end, the village, the dream was what Hashirama valued/wanted the most over anything (even his own life).

The thing is: I have a feeling that if Izuna didn't die, the village would never be created, because I don't think Madara would go against Izuna's wishes – as we've seen he clearly respected Izuna and tried to fullfill the promise he gave him.

My apologies, anon, if you've expected a more detailed headcanon on how things would go, but I fear I am not very good at pinpoiting how exactly the story would unfold.

Levi: Damn it!

Mikasa: What's wrong?

Levi: The lyrics for one of the songs says that I'm playing a mean old boss!

Historia: With a silver whistle and a golden scale.

Eren and everyone else, including Mikasa: An eye for an eye!

Levi: Yeah, yeah, I get it!

Hanji: Cheer up, Levi! At least you're playing one of the main characters!

Mikasa: Yeah, honey. Plus, you won't be kissing anyone. In fact, you won't be kissing anyone at all, really.

Pieck: Well, that sucks

Historia: Yeah! They're so cute together!

Levi and Mikasa both blush.

Me: Alright, everyone! Listen up!

Everyone gathers around me for instructions

Me: Okay, so I got the cast list for your understudies posted, everyone go check them out!

Everyone looks at the bulletin board to see who their understudy is

Everyone is chatting with each other

Frieda: (whispering) Hey Mikasa and Nanao! I hear that Byakuya might propose later to the director.

Frieda: When did this happen?

Yachiru: This is gonna fun, Ymir Fritz! But I'm kinda bummed that Kenny didn't get the part of Hades.

Levi: Hey kid, did you just say Kenny?

Kenpachi: Sure, she did why?

Levi: Oh, nothing! I thought that she was talking about my uncle

I hand out the scripts to each understudy

Historia glances at Eren several times

Rukia: Hey, Historia. You keep at that Eren guy

Orihime: Yeah! Do you like him or something?

Historia: What me? Him?

Historia is trying not to admit her feelings for Eren

Ichigo: That Historia girl keeps looking at you

Eren: Really? Her?

Eren is flustered as well

Ulquiorra: Just admit that you have feelings for her

Eren: What should I say to her?

Deidara: Tell her that your love for her is like a truck. Berserker!

Levi shakes his head

Levi: Don't say that, Eren

Ulquiorra: Just be yourself

Eren starts walking towards Historia

Historia: What should I say to him?!

Rukia: Just take a deep breath and relax

Orihime: Tell him you dream of him every night!

Rukia and Mikasa shake their heads

Frieda: No! That sounds creepy!

Mikasa: Just be yourself. I did that with Levi

Historia nods

Eren and Historia both bump into each other

Eren: Hey, Historia

Historia: Hey Eren

Eren and Historia: I've liked you for a really long time and I was

Historia: You have?

Eren: Yeah! Since senior year of high school

Historia: How come I never noticed you before?

Eren: Because you were dating Reiner

Historia: Oh, that's right! To be honest, I never felt anything for him. Everyone kept saying that we were high school sweethearts and that we would get married, but I didn't feel that at all

Eren: I could tell that you were faking it the whole time. Hell, you even went by a different name! It was Krista

Historia: Guilty as charged! Being Krista was exhausting.

Eren: I was so glad when you dropped that persona.

Historia: When I met you in college, I knew that you were a guy that I could trust. I remember when I first told you my real name and a massive weight was lifted off my shoulders.

Eren: I remember that, too.

Orihime: (whispering) This is so cute!

Me: I know, right? This reminds me of how Ichigo and Rukia got together!

Rukia and Mikasa: Ah shit!

Orihime: Where did you come from?!

Me: I've been here the whole damn time!

Eren: So do you...

Historia: Yes!

Eren: Really? That's great! I'll meet you after rehearsals

Historia gives Eren a kiss on the cheek, and he stands there blushing

Nel Tu: Papa. I'm sleepy.

Ulquiorra: I know, sweetie, but there's nowhere for you to rest

Orihime: He's such a wonderful father.

Historia: I saw you looking at him a few times yourself

Orihime: No I wasn't!

Me: Alright, everyone tomorrow, everyone needs to be at the top of their games!

Everyone responded to me, and they all begin to leave

Orihime looks at Levi and Mikasa, Ichigo and Rukia, and now Eren and Historia holding hands looking at each other with love

Orihime doesn't want to admit it, but she does have feelings for Ulquiorra. She loves seeing him being gentle with his daughter Nel

Orihime: Maybe I should tell him how I feel about him!

Five + One - accepting !!

1. pick up your phone

Communication with Izuna could be a teeth-grinding, frustrating, hair-pulling, infuriating, and irritating ordeal. His brother had a bad habit of dropping off the grid on a whim and no matter how much Madara nagged, he never changed this. But as his thumb hovered over the Send button, Madara was struck by a rare bout of indecision.

He remembered how their dad used to keep him on a short leash. It’d only gotten shorter as he grew older and it’d been the endless source of arguments between the two of them. He’d hated the lack of freedom, the constant oversight, the feeling of being caged... and he’d promised himself to not be the same. And here he was, doing the exact thing he hated.

There was probably a difference between his dad micro-managing his time between school and work and Izuna’s late-night disappearances, but wasn’t that what Madara had wanted? The chance to wander, to run from his responsibilities, to play games with his growing body and the people who interested him...

Biting his lip, Madara hit the backspace before he changed his mind. Let Izuna have his fun.

2. i’m sorry

They didn’t fight often. Oh, sure, they bickered constantly and sometimes it got a little personal, but they rarely ever actually fought.

Well, this time, they had. And this time, Madara hit him.

Izuna was five centimeters shorter and twenty kilos lighter than him. He fell the instant Madara’s fist touched him.

He regretted it immediately. But instead of apologizing on the spot, he left. And now he was in the park at two a.m. staring at his phone with the world’s shittiest apology text hovering in front of him.

He grimaced and shoved his phone in his pocket. No. If he was going to apologize, he’d do it in person. His brother deserved that much from him.

3. he’s gone

Their relationship with their father was never comfortable. Tajima had always struck Madara as a man who was eminently unsuitable for fatherhood and only cognizant of that far too late in life. He was sharp, jagged all over, and his tongue was the sharpest of all. He’d always loomed over his two sons no matter how far they went, the dim shadow they both felt on their backs.

Privately, Madara always thought their dad preferred Izuna. Was that an unfair thing to think? He didn’t think so. Even though Tajima paid more attention to Madara, his attention fell differently. Harder, colder.

It came as no surprise to Madara that he would be the one to kill him. Technically, it was being ruled as an accident. Blunt force trauma to the head. But he knew better. And when the call came, he decided not to tell Izuna.

He would eventually. But right now, Madara wanted to be alone.

4. tobirama? rly?

His brother has a strange proclivity of picking up the worst people. Madara hadn’t liked Boyfriend #1 or Girlfriend #2. He’d personally chased Boyfriend #5 away. So when the news breaks from Hashirama of all people that his brother was hooking up with that guy --

For a real and genuine moment, Madara was tempted to find his tire iron and beat Tobirama’s pale face into wet pulp. Looking at Hashirama soothed the violent urge in him, as did hearing about the alleged date.

His brother was... happy. Tobirama made him happy. Madara couldn’t imagine why or how but he did and wasn’t that enough? His brother’s happiness mattered more than his dislike. Tobirama’s face could go undamaged if looking at it made Izuna feel the same way that Madara did when he looked at Hashirama.

So he deleted the accusing string of texts he typed up and turned his phone off for good measure. The tire iron option would always be there if Tobirama messed up. But... let Izuna have this. Let him be happy.

5. i’m dating hashirama

So maybe he never got around to telling Izuna about his own love life. That was just how things ended up being, him being too busy to ever tell Izuna and Izuna having his own shit to deal with and --

Alright. Madara will admit it.

He didn’t want to tell Izuna. He didn’t want his brother’s interference. His entire life he’d shared everything with Izuna, from clothes to secrets, and that had suited him just fine, but not this time.

Hashirama was his. He wanted to keep it that way.

He’d tell him. Eventually.

1. i’m coming over

That’s the last text he ever sends his brother before he walked into their shared flat and found his dead body.

Murder, says the police after they arrive. Madara didn’t call them. His neighbors did after they heard him screaming. They had to pry him off of Izuna’s body and nearly tazed him when he went berserk.

Need to find the suspects, someone else says. They sounded far away. Madara could only think about the notification that flashed on his phone right before he texted his brother.

2 missed calls.
