Hearing Aang over explain how bending works each episode is genuinely so annoying. Now listen, I know the original show also has info dumped about bending. But at appropriate times! 

It feels like whenever Katara is bending with Aang around he just takes the time to say how air bending works. And then Katara can magically do the move. It doesn’t draw this obvious distinction between the bending forms, if he had said that for air benders it's about blah blah or if he had mentioned how a friend used to do an exercise where they follow the push and pull of the ocean that would be decent. It would show the difference, show how Aang as a bending master can be helpful, but also how he isn’t a stand-in for an actual water bending master and also explain why HE can’t just start water bending like a genius. 

I think a lot of the issue stems from making Katara an idiot when it comes to water bending. She couldn’t even draw a water droplet up in the live action, yet in the animated show she was teaching aang during the first few episodes what she DID know. This allowed for the two benders to play off each other, to explore Kataras own self-worth issues when it comes to being the last bender of her tribe, and also explore how Aang's inability to self regulate because he is 12 can unknowingly hurt his friends. But in the live action, Katara isn’t skilled, she can’t do anything, they literally remove the entire fighting scene of Zuko's ship which is SUCH an important moment for Katara and her bending! It's frustrating. Honestly if she can’t even teach herself to lift a water droplet on her own I don’t have that expectation of her growing into a master bender status once she DOES learn the actual forms. It's her determination, her natural ability, her attempts to use her bending to help that make her a really interesting and powerful character in the early episodes of season 1. She doesn’t have that in the La and any sense of natural talent or personal experimentation is replaced with Aang going “well the monks said-”.

No Aang, the monks didn’t say anything because Air bending and water bending are different bending  forms!

we went to iceland! (pt 2, colorful version)

nimona thoughts! still my top movie of the year so far!!

been thinking about how to frame my thoughts on this gem, and I ultimately arrived at a bit of a pretentious jumping-off point. but honestly, my favorite stories are always the ones that end up demoting the whats, the hows, and sometimes even the whos in service of the whys. it's the hardest question and context to tackle in any story, and it's worth interrogating the most in order to find any true meaning, any connection at all to what's told.

nimona shows exactly why walling yourself away from the "others" isn't good enough. it shows why you have to do the work and see them.

not just that it is dogmatically "the right thing to do". not just depicting what certain systemic injustices are, how they are deployed, and who they are targeted at. but the why. that simplest, purest shape of questioning an injustice dating back to your gentlest time as a child, when you were vulnerable, naive, and truly curious in the best possible faith. the question you would always ask was why.

you are picking up a sword to threaten the unknown. you've been told the whos and whats. you parse it thus. but you don't know the why. you are watching this happen on TV, contextualized, simplified, dramatized. you are connecting the dots. understanding the why.

nimona painstakingly drills down on that why. arduously, achingly digging past the institutions of fear fed by cycles of indoctrination and right down to the core of it. packaged in a simple-to-parse fantasy world built with deft, elegant metaphors and archetypes that immediately fall into place and make sense to a person of any age.

it is animation as a medium and fantasy as a genre both working in concert. a fun and colorful romp that ends on a gentle embrace of reassurance that tells children - both literal and the ones buried deep inside adults - that their first question to the world was always the correct one. because it was the kindest.

I knew what her goal would be the moment she headed for the town squar #even before the obvious visual connections. the film carries you alongside her internal state so well that it's almost a magic trick #but really it's just good a-b-c-s of dramatization. not a second is wasted on tertiary noise that's not serving the central metaphor #and you know kids are hyper-attuned to that. they lack the language to conceptualize effective storytelling #but storytelling isn't about peering behind the curtain. it's about receiving whatever is the result of it #and I know deep in my bones that this movie was a warm balm on the hearts of many little ones and that makes me so happy #I'm a 30 year-old adult and it damn near made me weep. anyway! not to promote netflix NOW of all times #but man what a good ass story. you can keep your barbied heimers

instead of magical healing that can poof your severed limbs right back into existence a la terrified abled person's ableist fantasy of reassurance, i think following the rule of "you can't create something from nothing" and the basic common sense of "if you try to reattach a limb which has already started to rot then you are going to have to deal with the consequences of having a rotting limb" has a lot more potential for storytelling (even aside from the question of ableism, which is obviously a big and important question to be asking and answering about/within your setting, but other people have said it better than i have the spoons to say it)

modern medical science can reattach a digit if it's been disconnected only very recently, but it will never have its full original functionality again. mobility and sensory capability will be limited. and i do think magic should be a little more powerful (because that's kind of the whole point of magic in a story), but not by too much, so maybe if you magically reattach a larger limb straight away (like within the same time frame as for digit reattachment surgery, a few hours or up to a day at very most if it's been kept cool and protected enough) it should successfully reattach, but that limb is never going to work the same again, just like a reattached finger in real life won't. those nerves and blood vessels and tendons and muscle fibers and everything else have been severed, and that's going to leave an impact after reattachment even if the limb in question hasn't deteriorated any!

and if it has already started to deteriorate just don't do it. don't invite gangrene into your life. c'mon now. Gangrene Can Fucking Kill You.

Hey y'all! I am once again in health insurance hell, and could really use some help. I have a specific US health insurance question, but it might get long so it's below a read more

My employer offers two health plan options, and they are both absolutely terrible. I want to get my own health insurance, but the insurance broker lady I used when I worked part time says I can't, because I can get health insurance through my employer, even if I opt out. I spoke to another health insurance person today, and she said if I get a letter on company letterhead saying I'll lose health insurance on [date], as long as it's 60 days or less from now, it counts as a qualifying event and I can buy my own health insurance. She said opting out counted as losing health insurance. Do you know anything about this? How do I get health insurance as an individual NOT through my employer even though my employer offers it? The plans my employer is offering are Aetna, and Aetna is the absolute worst and I despise them as a company so much one of my long term goals is to warn people against them. They suck! They refused to pay for my inhaler until I got my doctor to fill out a form like three times, and also I had to email them A LOT and fill out a LOT of surveys with an emphasis on how horrifying I found it that they as a company clearly valued profit over their customer's lives, and would in fact prefer their customers die before they could reach the ER in case of an emergency, as evidenced by their refusing to pay for my rescue inhaler, a necessary life-saving medication. They also require I fill that form out every year, just in case I magically stop being in the small minority of people who get severe adverse reactions to albuterol and levalbuterol

#they're the best characters your honour #i feel so many ways about gansey and the pig #like you could say gansey (narratively speaking) serves as the vehicle for the story; despite the fact that he was supposed to die #and even tho the pig keeps breaking down gansey keeps forcing it to power through #just like how he forces himself to keep going even as his time is running out #i don't remember if this actually happens but the pig eventually runs on magic instead of its engine #which is a parallel to gansey being kept alive with magic (noah and cabeswater's sacrifice) #and as for crowley; I think the bentley embodies everything that he's trying to supress #we see this more clearly when aziraphale is driving it and it willingly lets him change its colour; the music; and the speed #i always found it interesting that whilst crowley keeps trying to convince aziraphale he's not the way he is bc he's a demon #he also uses his demonic aesthetics as something to hide behind; just like how his sunglasses act as a wall between him and everyone else #he lets aziraphale assume he's used a gun before and he leans into the whole “demons lie” rhetoric #and yet the bentley is the most honest version of him we get to see bc it exists without restrictions (aside from the ones crowley imposes) #anyways it's probably not that deep lol #gansey #crowley #good omens #trc #the bentley #the pig
