this is extremely old shit but i was talking with some mutuals about the old shitpost-senpai story about the maid café maidreamin where he was angry the waiters didn't pay attention to him even though he paid 500¥ and bought a coffee.
Tumblr media
i've gone to maidreamin too and had a different (better) experience, and since i still have the flyer i wanted to confirm the price of what he got.
HE SPENT LESS THAN THE CHEAPEST THING OFF THE MENU 😭😭😭

Tokyo, 6.22.23
I literally took two photos today because of how the day just naturally went, so I wanted to write about it before I forgot what I did today. This morning, we all woke up in Kyoto in our Ryokan and ate their delicious breakfast. Dan made an egg sando, so I followed suit and it was so good. Instead of rushing to get out the door, Andy, Sammie, and Dan were laying on their tatami mats while I collected my items. Dan rolled over the two younger ones, initiating bursts of groans and laughter. It was projected to rain all day in Kyoto, so instead of going to the Bamboo Forest and Fushimi Inari, we shifted our plans and went to Tokyo since there was a slightly less chance of rain and there were more indoor things to do. The train trip took three hours and we had also struggled with buying Shinkansen tickets, so we got into Tokyo around 2:30. I had originally planned for us to go to Maidreamin, but it was a struggle to wrangle everyone together (Sam got lost in the bathroom? Sammie was tending to her injury from the night before, etc, etc), it was too late to just walk in without a rezzie. I went out to get pottery from the Kitchenware district (got rice bowls, three plates, and four teacups). The group decided to eat dinner at 4pm, so I missed out. Andy and I met up for dinner and the spicy miso tonkatsu was amazing. Afterwards, I went shopping and joined Sammie to shop a little before retiring for the night at 8pm due to the rain and cold weather. Andy is feeling the beginnings of illness, so I am dreading getting sick since I’ll be sleeping right next to him. Oy vey.

Akiba Maid War (アキバ冥途戦争)
Bigband by Karlgeorg Hoefer for Ludwig & Mayer, now distributed by Linotype.
Not much is yet known about this show, but the scenery present in the PV is decidedly retro. From Rocket being on the corner (now ironically the site of Maidreamin) to the Nakaura building standing tall by itself in the background, this is clearly an Akihabara plucked from around the turn of the century: the period where maid cafes were becoming mainstays and beginning to attract attention from mainstream press. If the title is to be believed literally, we might witness some serious territory disputes.
Bigband is amazingly evocative of the display advertisements that used to dot elecrtronics stores along Chuou Dori, with thick strokes and tight counters that give urgency to any deal, and it was expressly designed for that same purpose. Stores such as Rocket often hand-painted banners with a rainbow of colors to attract attention and that same whimsy is employed here in the PV intertitles.

For my media excursion, I hit the quintessential home of otaku culture in Japan, the forbidden maid cafe…
Julie had sent a message in the groupme recruiting people for her expedition, and since I had never been to a maid cafe, and probably will not have the chance to go again, I figured why not. We headed to Akiba, a close walk from hotel Edoya, and first tried At Home Cafe, a very famous shop that’s supposed to be good for first time visitors (whatever that means). The cafe took up three floors, and was totally booked, with maids scrambling around delivering food. We got turned away, and instead found a pretty empty “Maidreamin” around the corner. They had just opened, and we were the only ones there. Before entering “Dreamland”, the rules were explained to us. No pictures of the maids, absolutely no touching, order something every 60 minutes, etc. Basically rules to keep the maids safe and to make sure people are paying not just for the food, but the experience. They then welcomed us in the classic maid cafe way, and sat us at our tables. Almost all of us purchased the meal set, which came with our choice of cute meal, drink, and a photo with a maid of our choice. I got the famous omelet rice, and watched as our maid drew a surprisingly good ketchup cat on top. I mentioned this in my regular blog, but I was really impressed by the maids’ skill as performers. We also got cat ears with our sat, which felt goofy to put on. Every time a food dish came, the maid would lead us in a ritual to imbue the food with cuteness (Moe moe kyun!) To be honest, I don’t think it worked, cause my omelet rice was pretty bad. I guess you don't really come for the food. After watching a live performance requested by another patron, who was a big spender, and dropping 40 dollars (sheeeesh) on the bill, we took our pictures and headed out, feeling kinda weird, not quite knowing what exactly we had just done.
Academic Reflection
Maid cafes are pretty well known in the west. Since we don’t really have anything like them in the US, and they’re closely linked with the pervy/weird reputation Japan’s anime culture (sometimes deservedly) has in the west, they often grab headlines as a distinctly Japanese curiosity (along with hostess clubs) that displays a worrying pattern of loneliness and escapism among Japanese men, especially otaku. There are lots of places where maid cafes are represented, but I was first exposed to the idea in the anime Steins Gate.
Two of the characters in Steins gate, Faris and Mayushii, work part time at a maid cafe in Akiba, similar to the one we visited, called Nyan^2. Daru, a character who represents the stereotypical Otaku (fat, nerdy, somewhat perverted) loves to visit this cafe. Mayushii and Faris are shown to have to endure quite a bit from their otaku customers, but nonetheless put on a constant smiling face. They welcome their customers with the traditional “Wrlcome home, master” greeting, draw ketchup art on omelet rice, and perform cuteness rituals on food.
The maid cafe experience shown in Steins gate was very similar to what I experienced in real life. It seems that the classic maid cafe experience is pretty standardized. One thing that was different was the patrons— unlike the hugely nerdy Otaku like Daru who patronize Nyan^2 in Stein’s gate, the customers that eventually trickled in to our maid cafe seemed like mostly normal people. Also, the biggest spender and most enthusiastic patron during our stay was a woman— something that is never shown in Stein’s Gate, where the patrons are exclusively male.

June 8 - Free Day
Tumblr media
Today was a free day and our last day in Tokyo. To start, a group of us went to Maidreamin maid cafe. This was an interesting experience that we needed to do at least once, but I don’t see myself wanting to go back if I found myself in Tokyo again in the future. The food was alright, but the best part of the experience was the live dancing performance by one of the maid waitresses. That was okay. I noticed some of the other patrons seemed a lot more into it than my group was. After this, I decided to head out to the Super Labo Tokyo store. This is a photography book store. I walked around, flipping through the books and saw some incredible photos. I wanted to buy one as a present for my sister, who recommended the store to me, but they were all pretty expensive. I spoke to the man working the counter and he told me that this was the only Super Labo store in the entire world. I also came to find out that they publish photography works by someone that I’ve followed for a while, Petra Collins. This was a pleasant surprise. This and Asakura Garo may be tied for my favorite things I’ve done in Japan so far.

🌸 BORN PINK TOKYO 💗
Today was definitely one of my biggest highlights on my JAPAN 2023 trip by seeing Blackpink in Tokyo Dome for their Born Pink tour. I originally wanted to go to their Newark concert but wasn’t able to due to their unreasonable pricing on Ticketmaster. But I enrolled on a raffle with YGex Japan and won a ticket for today and got floor base seats. The Blackpink girls were beautiful and sweet and fun. It was like a fun party that you never want to end. FOREVER YOUNG 💕
Plus with Akihabara, this was my first ever maid cafe experience ever and it was an actual better experience than I thought. Originally I thought it was going to be a bit cringy but I actually loved the atmosphere to the cafe and the maid staff were very personable. We talked about NYC and Blackpink. Definitely a fun and Moe Moe experience if you ever find yourself in Akihabara. MOE MOE KYUN~
