I think I finally have words to describe why TNP is such a disappointing arc to me. Tigerstar’s politics don’t actually have a lasting impact on the culture of the clans.

There are individual cats who have reckonings with allowing him to take and exert power (in special editions, years after TNP ended), but ShadowClan as a culture that gleefully supported TWO dictators is not the focus. There are no lingering supporters who saw the ‘value’ in Tigerclan.

Riverclan has no division between cats who built the bonehill, cheered a deputy’s execution, and almost watched Crookedstar’s grandkids die; they just welcome Misty, Storm, and Feather back in.

Tigerstar was a fascist, and fascism is a disease of a society, but everything we saw in TPB is more like an isolated nightmare of individual bad guys in the eyes of TNP onward. He didn’t INVENT hating half-clan cats, xenophobia, and the cult of strength, they were issues present through the whole arc. Issues he had even exploited in Thunderclan, to the clan’s shock and horror, before his failed coup.

We haven’t gotten to ACTUALLY changing and questioning clan culture and the warrior code until this current arc.

And that really sucks because, re-reading TPB, you get to see how much of it WAS about politics, divided clans, and alliances both between whole clans as well as the ones Fireheart personally made. TNP abandons this, in favor of an arc almost entirely constructed to frame Brambleclaw’s ‘growth‘.

God I wish canon FireSand wasn’t kinda weird because in a better series their development would be soooo nice. Clinging onto the version of them I have in my head though

#the one where sandstorm was an orphaned windclan kitten given up to thunderclan for milk and always was insecure about it #so it manifested as her bullying fireheart but after he saves her she swallows her pride and admits that his heritage isnt a bad thing #which makes her realize that her heritage isnt a bad thing and she shouldnt have to put others and herself down to be valid in the clans eye #and the two actually end up becoming friends who become one another’s main confidant #and thats what leads to their romance in the end. no one has to tell firestar ‘’hey you have a breathing wife’’ or anything #firesand is my comfort m/w wc ship

tbh crowfeather should have sided with mudclaw during the civil war

#mudclaw was his mentor! #it could have furthered his outcast arc post civil war resolution #and push the reason why he felt he needed to take nightcloud as a mate #(especially given if she sided with onewhisker) #i really feel like the biggest reason that crow sided with onewhisker is because #main characters can't fight on the opposite sides of a war!! #main characters can't have deeply conflicting political beliefs!!! #it will confuse the readers!!!! it will cause too much conflict!!!! #i mean even tawnypelt sides with onewhisker when the majority of her clan sided with mudclaw #even ROWANCLAW her future husband sided with mudclaw #we dont know how fighting on the opposite sides of a divisive civil war affected their relationship #tawnypelt just had to be on the side of the good (ie thunderclan) guys #bc she was a 'main' character #anyway #crowfeather #mudclaw #warrior cats #windclan #amber.txt

i have a lot of non-favorite wc arcs but imo the worst one has got to be TNP. 

i think nostalgia gives it favor in a lot of ppls eyes but i never read these books when i was a kid lmfao so here i go to the tags

#every major narrative flaw can be traced back to this arc #it either created long lasting problems #or exemplified them #all but one pov are boring and forgettable #one of them actively makes the story worse because the authors refuse to give him consequences for his objectively flawed and dangerous #behavior #brambleclaw. #they introduce the most appallingly racist trope checklist of a group #the tribe #the pacing is so stupidly bsd you can tell this was the first time they wrote an arc on the fly #considering there was only supposed to be one arc aka the first one #the travel plot happened too early #but im more forgiving of that because hindsight is a gift #the windclan rebellion gets brushed over even though the entire arc couldve rode off of it #the lake territory is so bland and forgettable #the only thing i can remember about it is the lake itself and an old twoleg nest where they grow herbs #TO THIS DAY #EVERY MAIN ARC STORY NOT INCLUDING DOTC TAKES PLACE HERE #THIS ARC IS ALMOST 20 YEARS OLD #most of the arc is walking #they shove a teenager/young adult into a love triangle #maybe square #with men twice her age #bramble ash and storm are at least a year and a half older than squilf #erins stop pairing these clearly teenage/preteen coded characters into relationships with older men #this is not the only time they do this #stop doing this oh my god #'cats r sexually mature at 6 months though' #the apprentices are clearly written to be children to young adult age #oh boy dont even get me started moving on

#funny story about stormfrost actually #i created her to apply for deputy of windclan on the RP forum after their clan leader had to step down #and i ended up fucking hating her pretty soon after i landed deputy of windclan because i suck at committing to alts but ALSO #riverclan's (my main guy blackstone's clan) deputy position then opened up. and our clan leader at the time even told me then #that i would have been her top candidate to replace them had i not just become deputy of windclan on a second character LMAO #old ass art #repostober #i also had many plans at 14 to write a big ass fanfic about frostfall and her story #but alas it never came to be #because i got picked on relentlessly by one of my primary school teachers for writing only about dogs #never mind the fact i wrote the single longest story about said dogs in the entire class #and spent all of my spare time at school working on it #anyway that's why i don't write anymore :)

doesnt matter much bc idk how much content ill make for it anyways but i am so conflicted on whether i want the hawkleaf au to be in my hypothetical rewrite or not. because like i like the idea for that au because the melodrama gets pumped up even more and i love the whole "oh theyre firestar and tigerstars grandchildren.... but not the ones you think" thing, and how it makes the secret even more devastating, but also like. where the hell does that leave the windclan soap opera

#i mean feathertail lives in my au but i never liked feathercrow and even tho im aging up most of the cast #i still dont feel like pairing them up #so much of the interesting stuff you can do with crowfeather by leaning into him being a shitty guy is only possible if you keep #feathercrow and leafcrow #i want to keep breezepelt as a potential antagonist that eventually gets better but like again. SO much of that is rooted in leafcrow #i dont mind not seeing the windclan stuff as much bc hawkleaf would focus on the thunderclan consequences #as the only one in riverclan who'd care is mothwing who. honestly would probably already know #leopardstar and mistystar would probably hate that but leopard kicks the bucket soon after anyways #and tbh mistystar is so inconsistently written i just have no clue how to write her #maybe she hates it but shuts up when the brothers get exiled #ooooo maybe for an extra bit of nastiness riverclan grabs this whole thing and goes ''and this is why you cant take in loners'' #and clan xenophobia only grows all that more powerful #anyways back to crow. i feel like since hes still going on the journey he should still be more involved afterwards #i like my initial idea i rambled about on main where hes still a shitty person but its less motivated by manpain #and more motivated by windclans civil war and perhaps that whole event made him turn against thunderclan #i soooorta want to do a thing similar to the po12 au where the other clans have prophecy cats? #but probably not bc the three's powers are seen as curses from the dark forest after the secret gets out #altho if i did do that then hmmm how would the other prophecy cats besides thunderclan react to all this #rewrite
