This is a second chance romance. Will Mari Macquarie give Loch Maclean a second chance when he ripped out her innocent heart ten years ago? Did Loch destroy any chance to win the woman who owns his heart and soul? Read the first book in Jayne Castle's new series The Sounds of Mull.
Loch Maclean is a self centered heartless warrior who went off to fight the English for his King Robert the Bruce ten years ago. During this time he had never come back to visit his clan, family or Mairi Macquarie, the lass he left behind. Loch had never even sent a letter to his father, sister or Mairi. He only cared about his own needs and didn’t even think of anyone else while he was campaigning for Scotland’s cause.
Now since The Bruce and his warriors won the Battle at Bannockburn against the English It was time to return home. Loch comes home expecting everything to be the same. Except he discovers his father is dead and the lass he left behind had never married, except Mairi Macquarie is even more beautiful than he remembered! So he expects her to be waiting for him with open arms except she wants nothing to do with him. On top of that he finds out his father is dead and the enemy clan The Mackinnon’s are up to mischief again stealing clan, property and livestock and his clan what something done about it!
However Loch immediately becomes Laird and starts lording it over to everyone and tries to force his sister to marry their bitter enemy Laird Mackinnon. However nobody wants this match especially his sister and his cousin Jack. His cousin Jack has seen this man’s brutality and no matter what he says Loch won’t listen until it is too nearly too late!
As for Mari she has always loved Loch but only uses her for his own needs. He broke her heart ten years ago and she is not going to allow him to do it again. She ignores him as she is busy running her own Inn with her cousin. Except her cousin is sweet on one of the young men that came back with Loch after fighting for Scotland’s cause. When Mairi starts to let her guard down and open her heart and doesn’t change, she has had enough as this time it nearly destroys her broken heart.
Will Loch ever learn to respect the people that love him and get over his vanity and realize the mistakes he has made? Will Mairi ever forgive him or move on with a new love? Is it possible for Loch to redeem himself? I will never tell and spoil the book as you will have to read this wonderful story to find out!
This is a second chance romance story.Another wonderful story that I absolutely loved by my go to author Jayne Castel. I had a difficult time liking this hero to be honest. My heart definitely was breaking for the heroine as this was definitely an emotional read for me. Another Castel book I highly recommend and I can’t wait to read Jack and Tara’s story next!
Disclaimer: I received an advance readers copy and agreed to do an honest, fair, review and blog through Booksprout. All thoughts, ideas and words are my own.

Ainsley MacLeod → Emilie De Ravin → Red Fox Shifter
→ Basic Information
Age: 37
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Straight
Born or Made: Born
Birthday: April 8th
Zodiac Sign: Aries
Religion: Presbyterian
→ Her Personality
Ainsley is an incredibly hard worker no matter what she’s doing, and she almost always has a smile whilst she’s doing it too. She loves a job well done and will encourage others to do the same. This is something that she’s picked up from her mother, not that she’d ever admit that. She’s almost always doing something too. Rest to her is something you do when all the chores are done and she’s very good at finding chores that still need to be done. Still, she is quite partial to sitting outside on a nice morning with a pot of tea.
Her outlook and disposition are bright and cheery, which can annoy some but she doesn’t let it bother her. And she’ll tell them as much too. When she spends so much of her time like this though she can sometimes find it hard to express when she is sad or hurting, taking to masking it instead. When she does feel like this she turns back to her work. Keeping busy and organising things helps her cope with all manner of things.
Ainsley loves her clan, or most of it any way, even with the flaws she can see it in. She craves closeness with them, a more familial bond, and lots of hugs. She grew up in a small, close knit clan that was predominantly foxes and had close ties to the other even smaller nimble clans on the island. This, coupled with the fact her father was the clan liaison, means she was raised to be tolerant and controlled around other nimbles, even prey ones. It is still something she struggles with from time to time but she has certain coping mechanisms in place for this too.
→ Her Personal Facts
Occupation: Newspaper Archivist
Scars: A few small ones from childhood scrapes
Tattoos: Clan MacLeods words ‘Hold Fast’ on her left side
Two Likes: Blackberries and Folk Songs
Two Dislikes: Disorder and Avocado
Two Fears: Being Caught In A Trap and Flying
Two Hobbies: Hiking and Weaving
Three Positive Traits: Cheerful, Hardworking, Affectionate
Three Negative Traits: Blunt, Fussy and Particular
→ Her Connections
Parent Names:
Angus MacLeod (Father): Ainsley loves her father very dearly and knows he loves her too even if he was always away for one reason or another during her childhood, thanks to his job within their clan.
Charlotte MacLeod (Mother): Her mother is a woman who never stops. She was always doing something and most of the time Ainsley had to do it too. She complained about it growing up but it has meant she has a strong bond with her mother and has learnt a lot from her.
Sibling Names:
None
Children Names:
None
Romantic Connections:
None
Platonic Connections:
Mairi MacKinnon (Best Friend/deceased): Mairi and Ainsley were an odd friendship - a mouse and a fox but with both being the children of clan liaisons they had been raised to have more tolerance and more control around other kinds of animal shifters. When Mairi was killed whilst shifted by Ainsley’s cousin, she was devastated and vowed she’d never harm a prey nimble as he had.
Tim Boaz (Friend): As fellow fox shifters, Tim and Lee were some of the first friends Ainsley made when she moved to Chicago. If she has a favourite of the two she’s not saying.
Lee Boaz (Friend): As fellow fox shifters, Lee and Tim were some of the first friends Ainsley made when she moved to Chicago. If she has a favourite of the two she’s not saying.
Simon Brodeur (Friend): Their friendship is fairly new and started to form when Simon was assigned to help her come up with a system for storing footage within her archival office. Their personalities mashed well and they found they got along from day one.
Anton Kowalski (Friend): Not all nimbles are that touchy-feely but when Anton joined it was pretty clear he wasn’t like that. He brought with him his more family originated upbringing. As someone who’s big into hugs and the like Ainsley liked him the second he tried to befriend her.
Edith Walker (Acquaintance): Ainsley knows Edith through work. The other woman has come to her a few times for information for a story.
Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Snow (Friendly): Liz is someone Ainsley has had contact with through work and also within the clan.
Percival ‘Percy’ McCormick (Friendly): Ainsley admires what Percy is trying to do with having one united nimble clan. Despite the growing tension within the clan she hopes he can make it work. From what she’s seen of him she thinks he seems like a good person too.
Eli Kohen (Acquaintance): Ainsley has recently started using the archives to assist the police in an ongoing investigation and Eli has been her contact for this on a few occasions.
Darren Shaw (Friend): Darren is how she first started working with the police and he will still come to her for help, especially on cold cases. He’s been a regular enough visitor that the pair have started to become friends and he’s recently offered to take her out for coffee.
Conrad Kale (Friend): During his training Ainsley was one of the nimbles Conrad practiced following. She appreciated that he didn’t mess up her archives at all during his sneaking around and they became friendly, eventually becoming friends.
Simon Lee Weyden (Friend): Simon will occasionally come to the archives for old newspaper reports relating to his genealogical research. Over time the pair became friends.
Breha Kaur (Friendly): Breha has occasionally come to the archives for help doing research for a story. Since she is also a kind of fox Ainsley is hoping to become friends with her.
Hostile Connections:
Robert MacLeod (Cousin): Robert killed her childhood best friend, blaming it on the nature of prey and predator nibbles given her friend was a mouse and is a fox. Ainsley has never forgiven him for it and doesn’t consider him to be family.
Pets:
None
History -
Ainsley was born into a small, remote community on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. The clan her family belonged to was just as small too given the limited size of their island home and the way they were separated out. Instead of just one nimble clan there were four. One that was predominantly mice, shrews and voles, one of predominantly pine martens and weasels, one predominantly of hares and rabbits and Ainsley’s clan that was predominately foxes and otters. This separation didn’t originally stem from species though, but from blood lines, for each clan could trace their lineage to one of the Scottish clans of the isle. Clan MacKinnon, Clan MacDonald, Clan Nicolson, and Clan MacLeod respectively. With the species being separated out their wasn’t much inter clan mating and thus each clan is still known by their family name rather than the species they contain.
In modern times the relationships between clans is mostly harmonious, a state that has been hard fought for through recent generations. One of the ways this is done, just as with else where in the world, is through clan liaisons. Ainsley’s father holds that position in Clan MacLeod and so growing up she spread even more time around the other clans than most. It was a quiet upbringing that reflected the slow pace of island life. On weekdays she went to the small village school, on Sundays mornings she attended church with her parents, and she helped her mother with the house hold chores daily. Her mother taught her to forage for food, to cook and to weave and her father taught her to fish. But in her free time the little fox was allowed to run wild. She and her school friends, which contained an odd mix of species, would go off exploring the coves and the hills, the fairy pools and the farms, and would always return home looking like they’d spent the day rolling in mud.
Her very best friend was Mairi, the daughter of Clan MacKinnon’s liaison and a mouse. The pair had their spats growing up, some just normal childhood things, some fuelled by their clash of predator and prey. However over time, and with the help of their fathers, they learnt to avoid these. Like never letting Ainsley be it when they were playing tag. Sadly not all in their clans were quite so open to being friends. Ainsley’s uncle was a belligerent man with old and hostile views who passed it on to his children. His son, Robert, grew into a cruel and arrogant young man. One day in their teenage years, when they were all out exploring Robert attacked and killed Mairi. Afterwards he showed no remorse and declared it was the natural order of things. Ainsley was devastated and hasn’t even considered ever forgiving him for what he did. What it did do was make her even more determined to be kind, friendly and accepting of all species of shifter.
A year later Ainsley moved to the mainland for university. Going from such a quiet, rural community to the busy capital city was certainly an eye opener. She missed the wide open spaces but she equally loved the opportunities and new adventures to be found in Edinburgh. Afterwards she tried going back home but realised that at that time in her life she just couldn’t settle there. With the lack of inter clan dating, and the fact most of the clan was family, it was almost expect for the young people to go off into the world in any case. Many returned once they were older and had a family of their own. Whilst she can’t see that happening anytime soon she does hope to one day return home.
On leaving the island she traveled to a few different places, looking for somewhere that she felt like she fit. Each places offered new life experiences and lessons which she took on board with a smile. After searching for a year it only took a week in Chicago to know she’d found the place.
Present -
Ainsley has now been in Chicago for many years and has settle into life as an archivist. She loves her job, her friends and her clan here. It is her hope to deepen those friendships further and forge new ones too. In time she also hopes that she will find someone to spend her life with, having always admired the bond her own parents have. From a work point of view she is also hoping to start work on digitising the archives, making them more accessible and protecting them from any mishaps that may occur in the future. She has also been enjoying helping people find things for police work or personal research and hopes to continue doing more of it.

Story Telling
Tumblr media
An example of story telling is the forgotten soldiers instillation which was done in new Zealand to create a remembrance of the soldiers by acting instead of in a book or magazine, as it brings the story to life instead of being on a page and left forgotten.
Stories give us a flight of imagination.
there are many ways you can tell a story which is by colour, type, image.
Some very good illustrators for books are:

2017-04-22 Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow
Thanks to Chrissie for this report from Glasgow. I would greatly welcome more such reports.
Here is a short account of "Urstan Revisited" performed in Glasgow last night. I made the trip through to Glasgow, Saturday 22nd April, when I noticed Alasdair and Mairi Morrison were doing a concert together at Ceol’s Craic, the monthly Gaelic night at the CCA.  Alex Neilson was there too and a fiddler called Neil whose surname I have forgotten (sorry Neil) [probably McDermott - Ed] It’s a while since I have seen them perform together, and they did not disappoint. There were some songs unknown to me (although no mention of an Urstan 2) plus Alasdair did the Scottish traditional song “Geordie” and Mairi did a song from her home village of Bragàr on the island of Lewis. The others were from the album, but with some different arrangements. Ailein Duinn was particularly notable. They finished with The Whole House is Singing, which Alasdair described as  being “macaronic” referring to 2 languages sung simultaneously. I had Mairi’s 3 sisters sitting (or was it dancing) behind me, having a ball. A great set – so glad I made the effort to get to Glasgow. Also notable were Maeve Mackinnon and Fiona Hunter (accompanied by Mike Vass on guitar) who played for an hour before the Urstan band, presenting their new Gaelic/Scots project, Twa Leids / Dà Chànan. Great stuff. If Ceol’s Craic is always this good, I might go again, despite not knowing a word of Gaelic. A really enjoyable night.

Amid Hebridean vistas, Eigg celebrates its hard-won renewal
The population of Eigg has crept above 100 for the first time in half a century. The great unofficial census of Eigg is taking place in a sitting room offering the UK’s finest seascape. The waters of the Sound of Rum carry your gaze from beyond a spotless beach on the north-west side of this island – one of the Small Isles of the Inner Hebrides – and bring it to rest upon a phalanx of peaks belonging to Eigg’s larger sister, Rum. Meg Kirk, the universally acknowledged matriarch of this isle of 100 souls, has counted them all in and yet more out. Today she is joined by her friend Mairi Mackinnon, who runs a croft a few fields down. It was revealed last week that the population of this kenspeckle, but remote, island off Scotland’s west coast had stolen over the 100 mark for the first time in half a century and reached 105 before anyone noticed. And part 2, with the rest of our two-month haul!
Manifestations of a Phantom’s Soul: Quartet by Michelle Rodriguez is another entry of four stories by Phantom-adaptation longtime writer Rodriguez, back with more Erik/Christine-heavy stories and mature themes.
BookRags Summary: The Phantom of Manhattan is the answer to your prayers, people who don’t want to have to actually read Forsyth’s book in order to know what happens in it and discuss it with the rest of the fandom.
The Phantom of the Opera by Mairi MacKinnon is a new childrens’ retelling of Leroux’s story, designed for middling beginner readers and probably simplified and sanitized for a child audience.
The Phantom of the School Play by Rita Onyx is a kids’ retelling set in the aptly named Leroux Theater, where sabotage is afoot against the school production and it’s up to the students to find out what’s happening and stop it in time.
The Backstagers and the Theater of the Ancients by Andy Mientus is a modern-day retelling for children, set in a theater with a mysterious voice harassing its managers and a group of plucky kids setting out to find out who it is and why they’re doing it.  Also something about ancient artifacts?
Thea Stilton and the Phantom of the Orchestra by Geronimo Stilton is another childrens’ book, this time featuring anthropomorphic mice trying to stop a performance of Romeo & Juliet from being sabotaged by mysterious forces.
The Phantom of the Opera, directed by Jean Mathieson & Al Guest is the 1987 animated movie, now finally available on Amazon streaming (free with Prime!).  It has hilariously incorrect information on its page and the reviews have been imported from other versions, but who cares, get in there and bask in this no-budget 1980s animation.  Make new memes.  Discover a new world.
Phantoms of the Opera: The Face Behind the Mask by John L. Flynn is a new updated edition of the old nonfiction classic, listing various adaptations of the Phantom story and discussing their cultural impact!  This edition includes a section on the 2004 Butler/Schumacher film and mention of a bunch of other versions as well.

Hello. Bonjour. Guten Tag.
As part of the celebrations for our 40th anniversary this year, we're publishing special anniversary editions of some of our bestselling titles from over the years. We're particularly excited to be re-issuing the original 'Find the Duck' book - The Usborne First Thousand Words in English, featuring the much-loved illustrations of Stephen Cartwright:
Tumblr media
The First Thousand Words series has now been translated into over 60 languages, from French and German, to Hebrew and even Latin! Today, Mairi Mackinnon, Managing Editor of the series, tells us about her love of languages and editing these books:
'I started learning languages at school, aged 11, which is considered pretty late these days. We did French, Latin and German, and I then studied French and Italian at university – which included an amazing year in Siena, Italy. After that, I taught English for a while in Barcelona, and picked up Spanish (which I still remember pretty well) and Catalan (which is a bit more of a challenge). I worked for a travel company, too, between France, Spain and Italy – my dealing-with-grumpy-hotel-staff French, Spanish and Italian got pretty good, as well as my map-reading! In between tours, I was living in the West Highlands (it made sense at the time) and working as a translator when I read an advert for a Production Editorial Assistant, with language skills, for a company called Usborne.
Tumblr media
At the moment, we’re updating one of Usborne’s best-known and best-loved books, the First Thousand Words, which we publish in thirteen languages ourselves, and which has been translated by our partner publishers overseas into over sixty others. The new First Thousand Words in English comes out in August, to be followed by new editions of the French, Italian, Portuguese, Polish and Russian versions in December.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I speak a little bit of Russian but no Polish or Portuguese; luckily we always work with experts who are native speakers of the language. For next year there are new editions of the Spanish, German, Japanese… and Latin versions, which is quite a challenge as we use the same illustrations for all the languages, so we have to find an expert who can tell us what the Latin is for, say, radio, washing machine, teddy bear and pizza (it does exist!). Between now and then, we also have to update all the soundfiles on the Usborne Quicklinks website – one of the brilliant things about these books is that you can hear all the words read by a native speaker on the Quicklinks website, so you know exactly how they should sound. (That’s particularly useful in Russian, where saying a word with the wrong stress can make all the difference between “flour” and “torture”.)
It’s quite challenging to keep track of several different language editions simultaneously, but you do learn some surprising things. My favourite word in translation at the moment is “kite”, which is le cerf-volant (flying deer) in French; der Drachen (dragon) in German; l'aquilone (big eagle) in Italian; la cometa (comet) in Spanish; o papagaio de papel (paper parrot) in Portuguese, and воздушный змей (air snake) in Russian. One day I’m sure that knowledge will be incredibly useful, although I’m not yet sure how…'
