Maleficent Qrow doodle to kick off the new year!

One of my goals is to draw more this year, but considering it's mid January and this is my first post that doesn't seem like a promising one lmao-

RWBY Amber’s Allusion

Amber was introduced in Volume 3 as the first named Maiden of the series. She is hunted by Cinder, who eventually kills her and takes her power. Amber’s time in the sun was short but sweet, as her introduction indirectly changed the course of the entire show. Ever since then, I have been doing heavy research and thinking to find out what her allusion is and how it relates to the overall RWBY narrative, and I think I have reached a possible conclusion.

Amber is Aurora, the Sleeping Beauty.

Sleeping Beauty was cursed by Maleficent the Witch to prick her finger on the spindle of a sewing wheel and fall to an eternal slumber. The dead giveaway for Amber’s allusion is that she is literally comatose when we meet her, or in hyper sleep.

Now as for the spindle part: a sewing wheel is a decided used for weaving fibers together to make cloth (for blankets, sheets, clothes, etc.). And there is one character that is known for weaving clothes in the show. Coincidentally, it’s the one who killed her.

Cinder Fall takes the place of Maleficent in Amber’s story. This shot above basically sets that up. Cinder curses Amber by pricking her twice (with her arrows), subjecting her to an eternal slumber (coma, death).

Now onto her name. Amber is materialized from resin that comes off of trees. Often, insects and small creatures can be found preserved inside as fossils, engaging in millions of years of hypersleep. Warm color lights (most notably Amber) also are proven to be one of the most effective light colors to help with sleep.

Amber owns a pendant on her chest with a unique design. It has an orange core, with three colored leaves sprouting from the side. These colors can pertain to the colors of Fall (her maiden power) but the actual shape of the pendant is fairly similar to a pixie, or a fairy. And the fact that there are three different feathers makes the pendant a possible nod to Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather, the three fairies who helped Sleeping Beauty overcome her curse.

Maleficent, a magical figure, sends Diablo, her pet crow, to search for Sleeping Beauty while she is hiding with the fairies. In RWBY, a magical figure (Ozpin) sends his pet crow (Qrow) to search for Sleeping Beauty (Amber) while she is fighting the three bandits (Cinder, Emerald, Mercury).

And finally, the very season of Fall is the season of settlement and resting, which is the fated curse casted onto Sleeping Beauty.

Amber’s allusion has yet to be revealed, but hopefully this analysis can be useful. Thanks for reading.

Please consider: Branwen Twins as Salem's children (created from her magic/some sort of ritual involving her blood or w/e).

The funny thing is that you'd have to change very little about what we know of their backstories (at least, pre-vol 1) for this to work. Raven and Qrow raised by "murders and thieves" who were heavily implied to be at least emotionally abusive to them — swap out the bandit camp for 'Evil Castle', and add in a whole lot more crimes, and Salem fits pretty easily there. They were sent to Beacon to learn how to kill huntsmen — send them to Beacon to spy on Ozpin, and also to send as much intel as they can about Beacon's defences/etc, either way they're spying. Qrow being a Grimm Reaper fanboy — even MORE of a rebellious act. His insecurity about his semblance/himself around others? Let's make it worse.

Meanwhile RAVEN doubling down on her 'loyalty' to 'family', her life guided by the rules drilled into her head since childhood ("the weak die, the strong live") — except now the rules are from Salem, and you can bet your ass this rule would turn from "survival of the fittest" to some form of manipulation about family/blood/loyalty. And then when they go to Beacon and form STRQ, when Raven and Qrow find a family of their own and their loyalties come into question—how the hell would this Raven react? It's not like the twins are from a neutral party (bandit tribe) stepping into this war. Here, they're born into the war, and Raven doesn't have the tribe to go back to.

...okay admittedly I also really like the idea of goth villainous birb twins and corvid imagery with female villains (see: maleficent) goes so hard

wolf faunus + any general wolf-like things.

claw weapons, also double blades like fangs.

semblance/aura often acts like it’s own creature, digging at people’s insecurities and secrets, making them afraid of Briar as a monster, but really they’re projecting onto her the face of their own demons.

and really the person beneath the semblance is there to help in a kind, wise-wolf soul-animal way of leading by experience, trusting your own instincts, encouraging personal expression, and working together with others as a unit.

not afraid to speak the truth or stand up to others when she thinks it’s appropriate, even when it’s scary or not what someone wants to hear

Sleeping Beauty

life ruined by malice. Salem could also be a Maleficent allusion for her.

Maleficent also has a Raven familiar?? HmmmmmMMM.

the fairy godmothers: split allusion between the three brothers that saved her (Merryweather’s gift), and the music mentor who trained her (Flora and Fauna’s gifts of beauty and song). Also I’ve referred to her mentor as a male before, I think. But in realizing she’s one of the fairies, she’s now female. Women supporting women anyway, amirite?

named Briar. Lives most of her life in Solitas, where there is an aurora.

The Rose part of the name is dropped from direct use, but can still be seen in her aesthetics and narratives, and can be an indirect hint that she’s destined to be important to Ruby’s journey and training.

Twin Spindle Weapon name, which uses darts like the spinning wheel spindle, some of which are tranquilizer darts to put people to sleep.

reverse journey - born to a castle in the main city > living in a forest cottage, becomes born in a cottage village > living in a big city.

Thorn tattoos + semblance effect represents the princess trapped in the tower and surrounded by thorn bushes. can’t miss this one lmao.

Those with enough fortitude of spirit to fight off their own “dragons” can get past the thorns.

the lapsing of her huntress license alludes to the princess’s “sleep,” making Robyn the “prince” that wakes her up, convincing her to reinstate.

While Briar’s motivations to keep the grimm at bay via her music career were relatively successful and well-intentioned, they were also hedonistic and became a way to run from her responsibility as a trained fighter. She was not truly utilizing all of her talents to help people, so being convinced to join the war against Salem with both music and fighting was the kiss of True Love.

Anyone else think Neptune’s sigh might mean something more than just annoyance? I know Sun said his team was okay with the small hiatus, but what if they weren’t? Also maybe he was insulted by Sun implying that his team was just standing around without him, that while Sun was going on his adventure time standed still with them. Sun’s a good kid, and was mature enough to let Blake go once she got her real team back, but even to his own admittance he’s not the best leader. Just saying, food for thought.

...the...beginning of the episode...yeah I don’t know why they wrote the story like this either, I guess to start the season with a bang in showing how team RWBY is back in sync but I dunno.

But hey don’t worry, DEE AND DUDLEY are on the case, and I’m sure it TOTALLY doesn’t matter that Dee is two weeks from retirement!

*GASP* I am truly shocked. You shall always be remembered Dee, as a creepy weirdo who tried shake down a bunch of highschoolers for money.

It landed-ASS FIRST! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

And as to be expected knocking out the turrets didn’t JUST take out their defenses-

But ALSO-put the passengers in danger. Its like, use the turrets some Grimm die but they’ll attack the train more, DON’T use the turrets and they’ll attack anyway with less dead grimm, its a total catch 22!

Obviously bad-ass Qrow Branwen realizes and gets his TOP GUY TO STOP DUNDY-

Dundey like an idiot DOESN’T listen to the logical decision to turn off the glowing red fuck me spots for the Grimm to hit, and even MORE idiotically-

*CRACK* NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

...decides to hang from the SIDE of a train going into a tunnel....instead of finding a way to duck...how many good Huntsmen/Huntresses did Salem’s unnamed faction kill, because I can’t help thinking he and his late partner were scraped from the bottom of the barrel.

BACK in the train, everyone’s as completely calm as they possibly could be.

Seriously, in this situation Qrow is SUPER calm, I’d wanna kick his ass too.

Ruby then ACTUALLY calmly asks the guy to turn off the turrets(she’s got resolve of STEEL that one) AND THEY COME UP WITH A PLAN-to use a combo of Jaune’s Aura-booster powers and Ren’s emotion mask powers to mask the train. A plan that I’m sure will go off without ONE hit-

Logically team Rugby O’Shaunnesy is as pissed at Oz as the fans for putting everyone in danger without telling them because he’s a mysterious wizard.

BUT-they gotta stay on task and kick Oscar in the nuts later, THEY MUST SAVE THE PYORPLES!

Sadly, they realize that they have to seperate the car with the passengers masked by Ren and Jaune, from the one with Team RWBY Qrow and a dumb old man in a child’s body. The two teams have to say good bye.

Jaune: Only if you’ll promise you’ll meet us there.

Ruby: Promise.

Weiss: Just know it’ll probably take a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time for us to get there.

Qrow: I estimate about 12 to 14 epis-I MEAN days.

Team Bad-name-pun then SPRINGS INTO ACTION-getting all the passengers in the front car-

Blake then cuts the cable cars-BUT SEES-

And what’s cool about the next sequence is that it needed NO explanation, you get it obviously from what you see.

No real comment on here other than how I LOVE how the black and white color palette over-takes the colored train car.

And then BACK TO FIGHTING!

And dear GOD there are so many great Grimm-kills here, so many I’d be here ALL day cutting and pasting every single one so I’ll just put the boss take down-STEP ONE-

Yang slides herself to the back-

-Blake THROWS it to Yang-

-AND YANG JUST PUNCHES THAT SHIT BACK-

-tying that greasy Grimm in PLACE-WHICH WEISS CONTINUES-

-with a classic “Freeze that fucker’s wings off attack”(with assistance from Ruby and Qrow of course for shattering said wings)-and then Uncle and Niece-

-get they scythes in gear-

-AND THEY SLASH THAT BITCH IN TWO! AND.THIS.IS.JUST.THE.FIRST.EPISODE!

BUT-the beast lets out ONE last fireball knocking them off track and....EVERYONE IS OKAY-incluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuding-

-THIS LADY-whose name I’ve read is Maria Callavera! Turns out she WASN’T just a random side character, I couldn’t tell with how HEAVILY lampshaded it was!

AND THAT’S VOLUME 6 EP 1-a fantastic start to the season with AMAZING action and animation, and great story-progression. Minor criticism, I still feel they didn’t need to do a “Something hours earlier” thing with the train battle, they could’ve easily done the story in sequential order and it would have worked just as well if not better.
