Post-WOT thought:
Lan can never truly restore Malkier-as-it-was. There are too many dead, the people are too dispersed, etc. However, he can do a few things: he can refound a city on the site of Malkier's dead capital, and he can keep the Borderland states from fighting over the new territory suddenly opening to their north where the Blight used to lie.
I'm guessing, then, that his solution is something like:
Lan becomes King of Malkier, again. This has happened already, it's done, but he takes the role as a leader of a people, and not just as a battle king
As the four Borderland states were already essentially following Lan as a battle leader, this becomes official: they are now the Confederation of Malkier (or something) with Lan as their leader and the refounded Seven Towers as the capital.
The Borderland states are no longer "borderlands", because the blight is gone. I think these people will be much like the Aiel, in that they have their entire identity shaped by a millennia-long war that they've suddenly won, and they will need a new purpose.
Who better to lead them into that uncertain future than Lan, a person whose journey has already been coming to terms with not dying in that war and having something to live for instead.
Also, he doesn't know this, but they're also unusually well-behaved because Queen Nynaeve Sedai arrives in secret and yells at them a while if they're making Lan sad.

Okay, so I was thinking about my favorite Wheel of Time character again (Leanna Mandragoran) and I was wondering if she has blue eyes too. Is it in the books ever stated if blue eyes are a physical characteristics from ALL Malkieri or just from house Mandragoran? Cause, I cant really remember if any Malkieri besides Lan was ever physically described (at least so much that we know the eye color). I would think details about eye color in Malkier are primarily inferred from descriptions of specific characters rather than explicitly stated as a general characteristic of the entire population, BUT I am not sure. Especially since option number 3 is, that its just Lan who has blue eyes and maybe some of his ancestors but not the whole family or the whole nation. So I was wondering if maybe some of you remember some specific scenes or moments in the books where something was mentioned about the topic.

KEEPING UP WITH THE MANDRAGORANS
We are in the year FY 943. The war of the hundred years started two years ago, as a result of that many kingdoms fell apart, like the country Rhamdashar. Many of the former provinces became sovereign kingdoms. One that would achieve the highest notoriety of all was Malkier. It was a wonderfull country with a beautiful landscape and was especially known for its famous seven lakes.

Next to the lakes the Malkieri built with the help of the ogiers a big city which became known as "The Seven Towers", because of the seven towers that could be seen from afar and formed the cityscape. From this city the first king of the sovereign Malkier ruled. He was the former imperial governor and was named Shevar Jamelle.
Tomorrow: introduction of the first malkier king

Finally, someone calling Lan’s death wish for what it is!

Good thing he has a few people around who had to work really hard to keep him alive. I love him, but he does have his issues!

I’m writing a new WoT show spin off with Siuan and Moiraine’s places switched. Nothing else, just that. And only because I feel like Siuan would have been funnier.

Okay, so
Simple, three letter, single syllable names are very rare in WoT, except for Andoran commoners
Lan Mandragoran is not an Andoran commoner
Yeah technically it's al'Lan, but the al' part is a title, not really part of his name.
The Malkieri were the last holdouts on using bynames (e.g. Jain Farstrider, Cowin Fairheart), and afaict the only Westlands culture confirmed to do so after the War of the Hundred Years, so clearly the notion of a person's name changing throughout their life was not unknown to them.
Malkier was farther north even than the rest of the Borderlands, and firmly located in the mountains, meaning it was likely cold AF in the winter and probably had a relatively high infant mortality rate.
Lan means "prized" or "beloved" in the Old Tongue
Guys, I think "Lan" is a milk name. Something you call a baby until it's old enough for a real name. Isam has an actual name, so I'd hazard they do it at a year old, but Malkieri culture being what it is, it was probably his mother's right to name him, only el'Leanna was dead, and none of the five men who made it to safety with baby Lan felt like it was their place to do so.

The urge to write a fanfiction about a minor background character just because I love her so much and she deserves a bigger and more detailed backstory is growing bigger every day
