summary: airline lounges, box box widgets, and a cheesy greeting card 💌
words: 1,045
a/n: the romcom girlie in me has always wanted to write a meet-cute and i've been listening to too much lizzy mcalpine! tagging @vamossainz55, @sainzcaleruega, @monzabee, @ssainzz, @diorleclerc, and @userlando just because. let me know if you'd want a part two! hugs and kisses 🫶🏼
Love comes when you least expect it. Those same old words had fallen from the lips of every person you knew, so much so that they now felt weightless. On this particular evening, you found yourself at your best friend’s wedding reception, zoning out at the open bar. You nodded along as some man who’d had one too many G&T’s rambled on about his meet-cute on the Paris metro. Seeing two people you adored make a lifelong commitment only reaffirmed the fact that you craved the same.
It was no secret you weren’t exactly the MVP of the single scene. On any given night out, you’d leave the club before midnight to get a full eight-hour snooze. Dating apps were a no-no, as reruns of Catfish had made you skeptical about “finding the one” online. At work, you kept a low profile, socializing just enough to have a tight circle of work friends. It was as if you were coasting on autopilot, wanting love but hesitant to steer towards it.
Not to say that being single was all bad. Every hard-earned dollar was invested right back into the things you loved: trips, clothes, and your dog Cannoli. You silently weighed the pros and cons of your lifestyle as you stepped into the airline lounge.
Setting down your latest read to save your seat, you made your way to the breakfast buffet and grabbed a plate of avocado toast, poached eggs, and a glass of orange juice. On your way back, you spotted someone in a hoodie and cap making themselves at home in the armchair opposite yours.
The whole lounge was virtually empty, and this just had to be his seat of choice? You slowly approached from behind and let out a quiet gasp as you noticed them flipping through your book. “Love languages, huh?” The man pointed at the cover and smiled.
Your pupils dilated twice their size as you registered just who it was. The fan-made bracelets, the Leica, and, most of all, the signature McLaren cap—it all fell into place. “My manager and I just got into a huge argument, and honestly, I’d rather be anywhere but with him right now. Do you mind if I-" He gestured towards the seat beside you, his eyes radiating a silent plea.
“No problem. Let me give you your space,” you responded, hastily gathering your things. Just as you were about to step away, his hand gently clasped your wrist. “I could use the company. I’m Bob, by the way,” he mumbled, oblivious to the fact that his cover was blown.
As in, you knew he was currently seventh place in the driver’s championship and slowly but surely climbing up the standings. The last thing he needed was for you to bring any of that up, so you did as he said, trying to give him a sense of normalcy he so deserved.
He headed to the breakfast buffet and returned with the very items you had selected. "Copying me?" you teased. “First step in getting to know you,” he grinned. Curious about your life, he asked about your job in the emergency room. You told him the hours were grueling but watching extremely sick patients leave healthy made it all worthwhile. "Hope I never end up being your patient," he joked.
His interest didn't stop there; he inquired about siblings (only child), your dream vacation destination (Antibes), and whether you were a dog or cat person (not even a question). You, being a proud dog mom, wanted to show your furry guy off and handed Lando your phone.
As he squinted at your phone, you heard him say, "7 days to go. United States Grand Prix." A wave of panic washed over you as you remembered the Box Box widget that also occupied your screen. The silence was deafening as you wished the ground would swallow you up.
“Let me see the app,” He said. You normally wouldn’t have acquiesced so quickly, but you crumbled and unlocked your phone. He appeared to scroll and click a few things before he handed it back. “Widget Preferences. Constructor: McLaren? Driver: Lando Norris?” You asked as you noticed he’d made some selections.
“You hadn’t bothered with the preferences, so I took the liberty of choosing.” He blushed as the awkwardness of it all hung in the air. “That doesn’t feel fair. I’ve had all this time to get to know you, and I can’t say the same for the other drivers.” You teasingly retorted.
“I'll let the guys know they're in a tight race for your heart." He snickered. The man was on the verge of tears when his manager came by to remind him of his impending flight. “Flight’s in an hour, Lando,” snapped him right back to reality.
He entrusted you with his bags as he ran out to run a quick pre-flight errand. You couldn’t help but squeal the second Lando had vanished from view. What kind of magic was in the air at this airport and could it be bottled?
You tapped through your best friend’s Instagram stories as you awaited his return. The nearly empty lounge echoed as Lando asked a nearby gentleman for a pen and jotted something down. Breathless, he handed you a card, urging you to read it later.
"Your shoelace is untied," he mentioned, and as he bent down to tie it, his blue-green eyes met yours.
The British racing driver left your life in the abrupt way he had entered it. You took in the card, decked out with drawings of mac and cheese, milk and cereal, and avocado and toast, captioned "Better Together" at the bottom.
It was the only card in the store, but it felt just right. You highlighted “words of affirmation” as your love language, so I thought I’d give this a go. Thanks for keeping me company. Talk soon? - LN
His number was scribbled at the end. You quickly changed your lock screen widget to showcase his stats and took a screenshot to send his way.
New look. I might be biased, but I think you just became my favorite driver. Let's see if you can keep it up.
He replied right away.
I like the sound of that. When can I see you again?

United Airlines Unaccompanied Minor Coverage: The Whole Lot You Want to Recognize
Tumblr media
United flying together with children can be tricky, especially if you’re travelling by yourself with kids who are old enough to fly unaccompanied.
To help you understand how it works, here’s what you need to know about the program.
Include your name, contact information, united airlines flight number and date of travel.
So before you go about booking a united tickets for your child, make sure to check with both United flight and your airline of choice to see what their policies are!
The amount of time between takeoff and landing isn’t typically long enough for a flights united crew to handle everything by themselves if trouble arises, so if you want peace of mind knowing there are people ready to help your teen in case of emergency then make sure you book them onto flights with assistance from united express airlines specially trained flight attendants.
The adult arriving with him or her may also be asked for identification before being allowed into the same area.

Jottings: Season 7, Episode 2. Nothing compares to them
A tiny, but welcome disclaimer: I have not read all the OL books yet, so do not expect witty repartees and connecting the dots with the current book follow-up by the series. In fact, I am still struggling right now with Voyager, after I gave a resolute middle finger and an excruciating amount of time to Dragonfly in Amber, which bored me to death with its sketchy depiction of eighteenth-century Paris. Unpopular opinion, I know: I can't help it, since I consider Paris, for many personal reasons, as my second, beloved home.
There go my two cents, with little to no spoilers. There is much to savor in there:
I thought I couldn't bear to watch one more single time Sinéad O'Connor's rendition of ye olde Skye Boat Song. I was wrong. I think it is exactly what this season needs: a bit bruised & battered & breathless. The perfect tinge of rough around the edges. This is no walk in the park and hers is the right cue, setting the tone for all the rest.
Vlachos. Excellent. Loved every second of it.
I suppose everybody will talk about the Look Jamie gave Claire right after Insufferable Bree gives birth to wee Mandy. I cackled all by myself, which is not even surprising. And so will you, Shippers United. Mark me.
SS upgraded a bit her game, to the extent she doesn't sound all the time like reciting United Airlines' flight schedule. She and Rankin finally manage to pull off a decent rapport (chemistry will always be at a deep-frozen 0). So, rejoice: at least they don't look like the mean troop leader forced them to share the same tent at Camp Sunrise. It's all fine and dandy, until she relaxes and slips back into that horrific, East Coast wannabe accent. Sorry, not sorry.
Did Lizzie say ”Fraser's Fridge”, when reading the birth announcement, or am I hearing things again? Now that's an earworm, sheesh...
Vandervaart looks promising enough, but what do I know, after a two-minutes scene with SS? Court is adjourned.
LJG & JAMMF, what a powerful, ambiguous, elegant scene. Tension is mounting, and this is when you crack open the Netflix & Chill'd ice cream bucket. It will come in handy, trust me.
The fireflies' scene was the death of me. There is something extraordinary about S's superb ability to speak volumes without uttering a single word. There is so much love and such despair to capture Bree's face, Bree's voice, Bree's alien joy when she mentions damn Mickey Mouse, and keep them forever. Did I ugly cry? I let out a sincere Fuuuuuck and couldn't help it. This is when the box of tissues came in handy, and you know, damn the consequences.
Dear (?) Diana Gabaldon: GET THAT WONDERFUL MAN THROUGH THE STONES, WHERE THERE'S PENICILLIN AND A HOT BATH AND A HIGHER AVERAGE LIFE EXPECTANCY, STAT.
Yeah, sure. She missed that point five seasons ago, why do I even bother?
Spoiler: "What was it like.... there? It was.... magical". BOOO-HOOO-HOOO (I have no qualms).
Jeremiah's wooden toy plane in the streets of Wilmington and then the real thing across the sky, just after the little family gets through the stones. Clever reminder of that plane landing in Boston, with Claire, Bree and TMcG... ho-hum ... Frank Randall, after Culloden.
And finally, since I would really like to let you enjoy the wonderful last quarter of it, Jamie and Claire. That unspeakable tenderness that keeps us all completely spellbound. This is S&C acting, how could it be otherwise: and splendid, at that. But their acting, since that chemistry test, is informed by clear, present, deep feelings. We know. They know we know.
And they got their mojo back. I always hoped and prayed they will go out with a bang, not a fizzle. And it seems I was right. Fingers crossed. I trust them and, as always, I trust my gut.

tw cancer, tw death, tw grief / life update
I was having a nice day on Saturday. I woke up, made a tea latte, did some yoga, went for a run, went to get groceries.
Around 3 PM I got a call from my mom and aunt, letting me know that the hospice nurse said that they expected my dad to have 24 hours or less to live. This was a huge change from previous estimates of a week-two weeks. Derek and I booked airline tickets same-day from Minneapolis to CA. Our flight wasn't until 9:30 PM.
We were at the airport, past security, waiting for our flight to board, when I got the call from my mom saying that my dad had passed.
I had prepared for this since he was diagnosed 10 months ago - I had prepared for this since he started hospice - I had prepared for this since the last time I saw him in April - but I still wasn't ready. I thought I was ready, I thought I would be ready, but I wasn't.
Derek held me when I broke down weeping in the middle of the airport. We flew 3.5 hours to CA, were on the road for another 1 hour, and got to my parents' house at past 1 AM. It was hell. It was a hell day.
The hell got worse the next day when we saw his body at the funeral home. I walked to him and automatically said "Daddy? Daddy?" like I always used to, and he didn't respond. He didn't say anything. It was hell. The worst thing I've ever been through.
My aunt and Derek had to go back to home (Pennsylvania and Minneapolis respectively) yesterday. My mom and I attended my dad's funeral today. Seeing the hearse, driving behind the hearse, was really hard. My dad taught me how to drive, and I used to sit in the backseat when he and my mom drove me around when I was a kid, and now I was driving behind the funeral hearse.
My mom and I were so nervous about the funeral, but it was beautiful. It was at a veterans cemetery, peaceful and quiet and beautifully maintained. The ceremony was beautiful. It gave us peace and closure.
My dad was 70 years old. He grew up in Chennai, India, in abject poverty, the youngest of seven kids, raised by a single mom. He grew up to become a pharmacist, and moved from a couple of decades of retail pharmacy work in India and Dubai and the United States, to moving to outpatient and inpatient clinic pharmacy management after he enlisted in the Air Force. He loved pharmacy so, so much. He was so passionate about it. His last job before he retired was an oncology pharmacist, at the same chemotherapy infusion clinic where he ended up receiving his chemotherapy after a diagnosis of small cell lung cancer.
My dad grew up in poverty, and his own dad was never around. He worked hard and provided for my mom and I.
I have had a lot of pain and grief ever since my dad was diagnosed with cancer. I could write for pages about it. All I can say is that I hope nobody has to see a loved one suffer and lose their life due to cancer, because it's hell to witness. I have the greatest empathy and love for others who have witnessed this painful process in their family.
All I can say is my only consolation is that my dad lived a long life. I know there are so many people who tragically die younger. My only other consolation is knowing that we are all united in grief, because this pain of losing a loved one comes to all of us someday.
This past few days, this past month, this past 10 months, has changed me irrevocably. I have new fears, new anxieties, new understanding (and fear) of death and mortality.
I also have more understanding and appreciation of life, how temporary it is, how important it is to live life to the fullest while we can, and how important it is to appreciate the people we love. My husband, my friends, and my aunt and cousins have been so supportive, carrying me through something so devastating. Even work, even my boss, who has been so understanding.
And to everyone on tumblr who has been so supportive during this journey. People who read my posts, who liked them to show solidarity with my feelings, who commented, who sent me messages of support and kindness. Thank you.

anyway if you're wondering "wtf is jon's dad up to lately?" he somehow managed to get himself booked on a flight to japan via hawai'i by accident during all the ongoing recent united airlines horseshit, only to land in japan and realize he had neglected to put either a) any of the essential papers he had brought with him for his essential work meeting or b) literally a single piece of clothing, we're talking absolutely nothing, into his carryon luggage. all of that shit was in his checked luggage, all of which is apparently in guam. so he flew all the way to japan for four days for no purpose and had to buy an entire new wardrobe of clothes and i said "maybe put that stuff in your carryon next time?" and he said, i shit the internet not, "well i wanted to pack light so i only put my extra papers into my carryon so i'd be the only person who had to lift it and it wouldn't be too heavy for the overhead bins"
man took 30lbs/14kg of fucking newspapers on a 18hr three-leg layover flight and absolutely nothing else. not even his laptop.

A Carmen Berzatto Universe
A/N: Here’s another request from my inbox - Carmen and Vanessa’s first date! This does not, however, include their first kiss. Feel free to slide more requests for these two my way :) Happy Sunday!
Vanessa Monaghan is the breath of fresh air that Carmen had been gasping for.
Chapter 20: Dancing Bears
Tumblr media
Carmen shifted in his seat at Trunk Noodle. He and Vanessa had exchanged a few texts since meeting at the supermarket last week and while he’d felt confident enough walking her through the neighborhood grocer, he was now sweating bullets.
He’d been stressed all day, from texting Syd to let her know he’d need the night off to figuring out what to wear – and attempting to manage his curls when he desperately needed a haircut.
He’d suggested the restaurant, which was a hole in the wall Vietnamese place in West Loop from which he frequently ordered takeout. He’d arrived 10 minutes early and was greeted by the staff warmly. They knew Carmen as a customer and a chef, and reassured him he always had a table.
At 7 p.m. on the dot, the doors to the restaurant, whose dining room was no bigger than a home’s family room, opened up and there stood Vanessa.
She was better looking than he recalled, and he’d had several days to romanticize her silky brunette hair and long kohl lashes. She beamed a wide smile upon seeing him and he stood, meeting her halfway in a brief, but tight hug before he pulled out her chair.
“It smells amazing in here,” she gushed before even saying hello.
“I love this place,” Carmen nodded, taking his seat. “I didn’t even think to ask if you liked Vietnamese, I just assumed,” he shrugged softly, a small smile on his face.
“I’ve never had Vietnamese,” Vanessa confessed, to which Carmen grinned, “but I have a feeling I’ll like it.”
Their server brought over shots of fresh coconut milk with lime before taking drink orders.
“Why don’t you order?” Vanessa suggested.
“Are you sure?” Carmen asked.
“Our server addressed you by name, so something tells me you’ve been here before – I’ll try anything,” she smiled. Carmen’s heart skipped a beat.
“No allergies?” He asked, closing his menu. He knew it front to back by heart anyway.
“None,” she shook her head. Carmen rattled off four or five dishes when the server returned with their Cokes and she gladly clinked her glass bottle against his.
“So you know what I do,” Carmen cleared his throat softly. “What do you do for a living?” He asked.
“I work in marketing,” she began, crossing her legs. “For a firm called Olson Group downtown, I’ve been there since I left school.”
“So what exactly does that mean? Like commercials?” He asked.
“Kind of – commercial adjacent,” she nodded, “I help clients of all industries, so retail, restaurant, tech and ecommerce with branding, advertising, public relations management, pretty much anything that’s public-facing for their company.”
“Who’s your favorite client?” Carmen asked, ready to listen to her talk about anything. He liked the way her mouth shaped around the words she spoke.
“Right now, probably United Airlines,” she grinned, “they’re doing this retro PanAm-type of throwback branding overhaul and it’s just been a blast going through old school inspiration and updating it to fit 2021, but with a nod to the past.”
“That’s a huge company,” he commented, surprised.
“Our firm does a lot of big clients,” she nodded. “Our headquarters are here, but we have offices all over North America and Europe – I got to do a transfer year in Luxembourg, it was one of the best years of my life,” she grinned.
“Are you from Chicago?” Carmen asked, realizing he was practically interrogating this woman. “Sorry, god, I don’t mean to grill you.”
“I’m an open book,” she laughed. “It’s like a universal truth that people enjoy talking about themselves, right? I am from Chicago,” she nodded, “and I don’t mean Evanston or Rockford, but Chicago.”
“River North,” Carmen nodded.
“Lincoln Park,” she replied. “But I should caveat I went to grade school in Evanston.”
“I see,” Carmen quirked a small, knowing smile. Vanessa couldn’t believe someone with eyes that blue even existed. There was something about the round of his shoulders, prominent nose and jawline that made Carmen breathtakingly beautiful.
“I knew it!” she laughed, “stop judging me!”
“I’m not judging! Just filing it away for later,” Carmen’s first laugh helped draw his shoulders down from his ears.
Dishes started to pile up on their table as plate after plate was delivered and Vanessa excitedly dug into everything she could, enjoying every bite.
“This one’s a little risky,” Carmen said, stabbing a piece of lemon pepper squid, twirling it about in a sauce before holding it up in front of Vanessa without second thought. She gladly leaned over their small table to take a bite.
“It’s so’good,” she moaned. Carmen’s arms broke out into goose bumps. “Everything is so good,” she commented, holding up her fork with excitement at the spread in front of her, deciding on what to eat next.
Carmen explained more and more of what they were eating and they compared the dishes, ranking them as conversation flowed.
“So why did you decide to come back to Chicago? Miss home?” Vanessa asked.
“Something like that,” Carmen nodded, averting his gaze to the table before looking back to Vanessa. He might as well be honest. “I actually hadn’t planned on it, but my brother, who owned The Beef, he died,” he said, picking up his drink. “And he left it to me.” Vanessa’s eyes softened.
“I’m sorry to hear that, Carmen,” she said with heartfelt honestly. “What was he like?” Carmen swallowed softly. People never asked follow up questions, and if they did, it was never that.
“Eccentric in the best way possible,” Carmen recalled the older days, cooking in their family kitchen and how he idolized Mikey growing up – before things changed. “He was a really good storyteller and knew how to bring people together.”
“Is he your only sibling?” Vanessa asked, taking another bite of her spring roll.
“I’ve got a sister, Natalie,” he nodded. “What about you? Only child?” Vanessa threw her head back with a laugh.
“Am I putting off only-child energy?” She asked. “No, I’ve got two sisters – Nicola, she’s 20 and goes to DePaul, and Hannah, she’s in sixth grade.”
“Three girls,” Carmen raised his brows.
“My Dad thinks it’s penance for his wild boy days,” she laughed. “He raised us on his own – he’s incredibly in touch with his feminine side. My mom died a few weeks after Hannah was born, drunk driver accident,” she offered, seeing as Carmen had really opened himself up by telling her about his brother, she felt compelled to do the same.
“I’m sorry,” Carmen winced. He wasn’t sure what was worse, losing someone by their choice, or against their will.
Vanessa simply smiled, reaching across to squeeze his hand on the tabletop.
“Do you think we could order more of these?” she held up her fork, which had speared a pork wonton.
“Anything you want,” Carmen said sincerely. He’d serve his heart up on a platter it meant she’d smile at him again.
After dinner was finished, they’d agreed to take a stroll and try to walk off their overstuffed stomachs. The weather was nice enough as Chicago approached the end of summer and they weren’t far from Oz Park, which Carmen learned was one of Vanessa’s favorite parks in the city.
Carmen skirted the side of the walkways that were closest to the street and when a large group of people came by, Vanessa deftly stepped closer into his side, tucking her hand around one of his biceps. His brain shorted at her soft skin pressed against his.
“Oh,” she said softly, pausing in front of the retaining wall of a brownstone where a small bear had been spray-painted just above where the wall met the sidewalk. “I need to take a photo quick,” she said, whipping out her phone and crouching down to snap a picture. “Bears are my favorite animal,” she explained, “which sounds really juvenile, but my sisters and I always send each other pictures when we see them out in the wild.”
Carmen gulped softly.
“Why bears?” He asked.
“It’s actually a story our Mom used to tell us that her mother told her,” she said, stepping back into his side and lacing her fingers with his. Carmen squeezed her hand softly as they began to move forward again. “There’s this belief in our grandmother’s culture that when you pass away, you come back reincarnated as an animal, and everyone wants to be a bear because they’re the king of the animal kingdom,” she explained. “So when people pass, they come back to the world as an animal and those that are bears are so happy, they dance,” she laughed. “I don’t know, it sounds silly, but it’s always stuck with us.”
Carmen paused, gently tugging Vanessa’s hand so she’d step closer to him.
“It’s not silly,” he assured. “It actually makes more sense than most things people have said to me about the afterlife – thank you for sharing that with me.”
“Carmen?” Vanessa asked as they continued their way toward Oz Park. He looked over at her, not minding when an errant curl flopped onto his forehead. “I know our first date isn’t over, but I’d really like to go on a second date.”
“Me too.”

View From a Hotel Window 10/9/23: Wichita (Finally)
Those of you following my travel here will remember I was meant to be in Wichita roughly three weeks ago as part of my book tour, only to be thwarted by the fact that United Airlines couldn’t manage to keep its planes in good enough condition to fly, so I had to cancel and reschedule. Yesterday I flew in via American, with no issues whatsoever, so I happy to say that tonight’s event at…

Henry Dreyfuss: Groundbreaking UI Designer Part Two
This is the second in a two-part series on designer Henry Dreyfuss. Read part one.
World War II and a Move to California
Henry Dreyfuss, Raymond Loewy, and Walter Dorwin Teague designed a series of strategy rooms for the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff at the beginning of World War II. Dreyfuss’s contribution was “four 13-foot rotating globes, one each for Roosevelt, Stalin, Churchill, and the Joint Chiefs” (1).
In February 1944, when The Society of Industrial Designers (SID) was founded Walter Dorwin Teague was its first president, and Dreyfuss served as the organization’s first vice-president. After the War, Dreyfuss moved his family to Pasadena, California, and “opened a second office near his home” (2). In 1946, William F. H. Purcell and Robert Hose became partners in the firm. (1)

In the early 1950s, Dreyfuss designed two steamships, SS Independence and SS Constitution for American Export Lines. (3) For these ships, he developed aluminum deck chairs to replace the heavier wooden deck chairs. (5) Although his firm had done consulting work for Honeywell since the late 1930s, it wasn’t until 1953, Dreyfuss designed the most important product for that firm, the round Honeywell thermostat, “which allowed it to fit cleanly on a wall whether it was askew or not, unlike rectangular ones which frequently appeared crooked”(4).
Tumblr media

During this time Dreyfuss continued working with Bell Laboratories. “In 1949 Dreyfuss updated Bell’s Model 300 telephone with the model 500, which would become the first phone to be offered in a color other than black beginning in 1954. It would ultimately go on to be the most popular phone ever made”(4). An updated version of the wall telephone and the Princess phone were introduced during this decade.

The 1950s also saw Dreyfuss publish his seminal design book, Designing for People. “The book illustrated his ethical and aesthetic principles, [and] included design case studies, many anecdotes” (5), along with anthropometric charts. A second book dealing with ergonomics, The Measure of Man, was published in 1960. (1)
Dreyfuss’s Late Career
During the 1960s Henry Dreyfuss Associates clients included American Safety Razor Company and Polaroid Land Company, which introduced his design for the model 100 camera in 1963. Also during this time, his firm was responsible for the rebranding of American Airlines and continued to collaborate with its long-time client Deere & Company designing four new tractor models during the decade. (3)

In 1965 several professional design organizations, including The Society of Industrial Designers, merged to form the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA). Dreyfuss was its first president. (7)
Henry Dreyfuss retired from the design firm that bore his name in 1969, but remained working “with top management of several clients to analyze and improve their contact with customers”(3). In 1972 Dreyfuss, along with his wife Doris, worked on Symbol Sourcebook: An Authoritative Guide to International Graphic Symbols, a reference guide “of over 20,000 symbols [that] continues to provide a standard for industrial designers around the world”(4).

The Tragic Deaths of Henry and Doris Dreyfuss
In 1972 Henry and Doris Dreyfuss had been happily married for 42 years, but Doris was suffering from terminal cancer. At one point the pain became too much for Doris to bear.  On October 5 of that year, the Dreyfusses went into the garage of their home at “500 Columbia Street in South Pasadena, California”(3), got into their car, and turned on the engine. “Within a few minutes they both died. They had lived their life together and ended it together”(7). “Authorities reported the cause of death as carbon monoxide poisoning”(3). The couple was survived by their son and two daughters.
Henry Dreyfuss Associates
The firm that Henry Dreyfuss founded in 1929, continued as Henry Dreyfuss Associates for over four decades after his death”(4). “After Dreyfuss’s retirement, Donald M. Genaro served as president of the company until 1994. In the 1970s, Henry Dreyfuss Associates was responsible for designing the “interiors of nuclear-powered Trident missile submarines”(3). In the next decade, the company “added a major new client in Falcon Jet Company”(3), and was averaging about 50 new products a year. (2)
When Genaro stepped down as president in 1994, a team of several partners took control of the firm. During the 1990s a new utility vehicle was designed for long-time client John Deere, and the company designed the interiors of a line of business jets for the Astra Jet company. Projects for AT&T in 1992 included a notebook computer and a smartphone “which featured an onscreen keyboard”(2).
Henry Dreyfuss Associates relocated to Ann Arbor, Michigan in 2004. (3)
The Legacy of Henry Dreyfuss
In 1963, “Henry Dreyfuss became a trustee of Caltech,… though he had been a faculty member of the engineering division for many years, and had annually lectured on industrial design to students in Business Economics”(5).
In 1996 a major retrospective of the work of Henry Dreyfuss appeared at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York, the same year a book on his work was published. The Industrial Designers Society of America posthumously awarded Dreyfuss the Individual Achievement Award in 2004. (2) The Henry Dreyfuss Archives are located in the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.
A second retrospective of Dreyfuss’s work was held in 2020 at the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, Iowa. Currently the Cooper-Hewitt celebrates the 50th anniversary of Symbol Sourcebook: An Authoritative Guide to International Graphic Symbols with a special exhibition that runs through Spring 2024.
Henry Dreyfuss’s genius spans product design, graphic design, user interface design, as well as business and marketing. His greatest contribution to design is emphasizing the importance of the utility and usability of a product as well as its style.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
August 17, 2023 (Thursday)
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
Philip Stephens of Financial Times today pointed out how much global politics has changed since 2016. That was the year of Brexit and Trump, when those calling for national sovereignty and iron-bound borders seemed to have the upper hand, and it seemed we were entering a new era in which nations would hunker down and international cooperation was a thing of the past.
But now, just seven years later, international cooperation is evident everywhere. Stephens pointed out that a series of crises have shown that nations cannot work alone. Migrants fleeing the war in Syria in 2015 made it clear that countries must cooperate to manage national borders. Then Covid showed that we must manage health across political boundaries, and then Russia’s invasion of Ukraine proved that European nations—and other countries on other continents—must stand together militarily in their common defense.
That embrace of cooperation is in no small part thanks to President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who have focused on bringing together international coalitions.
The new global stance is on display in the U.S. right now as President Biden hosts the first-ever trilateral summit with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan and President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea. This is not an easy meeting—Japan and South Korea have a long history of conflict—but they are working to mend fences* to stand firm against North Korea, including its missile tests, and to present a united front in the face of Chinese power.
Secretary Blinken noted for reporters on Tuesday that the world is currently being tested by geopolitical competition, climate change, Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, and nuclear aggressions. “Our heightened engagement is part of our broader efforts to revitalize, to strengthen, to knit together our alliances and partnerships—and in this case, to help realize a shared vision of an Indo-Pacific that is free and open, prosperous, secure, resilient, and connected,” he said. “And what we mean by that is a region where countries are free to chart their own path and to find their own partners, where problems are dealt with openly, where rules are reached transparently and applied fairly, and where goods, ideas, and people can flow lawfully and freely.”
Cooperation between Japan and South Korea “helps us promote peace and stability and furthers our commitment to the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. It advances our shared values and helps uphold principles of the UN Charter like sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity. It allows us to even more expand opportunity and prosperity.”
Blinken addressed Ukraine’s resistance to the Russian invasion, backed by an international coalition, and reiterated that Ukrainians are upholding “the basic principles—sovereignty, territorial integrity, independence—that are vital to maintaining international peace and security.”
In squeezing Russia, international cooperation has again been vital. The Swiss corporation Société Internationale de Télécommunications Aéronautiqes (SITA), which is responsible for booking, flight messaging, baggage tracking, and other airline applications, announced in May that it will leave Russia this autumn. Russian carriers are scrambling.
Blinken also confirmed that the Biden administration last week achieved a deal with Iran over U.S. prisoners. Iran moved four dual citizens from the infamous Evin Prison to house arrest, and the U.S. is working to get them, along with one more who was already under house arrest, home. In exchange, the U.S. will release several Iranian prisoners along with $6 billion of Iranian oil revenue currently held in South Korea.
Several Republicans have opposed that deal. The senior Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, James E. Risch of Idaho, said that the “unfreezing” of funds “incentivizes hostage taking & provides a windfall for regime aggression,” and Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) called the money “ransom” and said it was a “craven act of appeasement.”
But in an op-ed on the national security website Defense One, Ryan Costello, the policy director for the National Iranian American Council, called the deal a win-win. The Iranian money will be released to Qatar, which will release it for purchases of food and medicine, which are not sanctioned. Medicine is desperately needed in Iran, and as Biden said in 2020: “Whatever our profound differences with the Iranian government, we should support the Iranian people.”
In his remarks to reporters on Tuesday, Blinken defended the administration's withdrawal from Afghanistan almost exactly two years ago, saying the decision to withdraw was “incredibly difficult” but correct. “We ended America’s longest war,” he said. “For the first time in 20 years, we don’t have another generation of young Americans going to fight and die in Afghanistan. And in turn, that has enabled us to even more effectively meet the many challenges of our time, from great power competition to the many transnational issues that we’re dealing with that are affecting the lives of our people and people around the world.”
He noted that the U.S. continues to be the leading donor of humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan, contributing about $1.9 billion since 2021, and that the U.S. continues to work to hold the Taliban accountable for the rights of women and girls.
In Niger, a key U.S. ally in Africa against terrorism, military forces took power from the democratically elected president on July 26, and now the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), a regional union of fifteen countries, has said it will intervene militarily if diplomatic efforts to restore President Mohamed Bazoum to power fail. Army chiefs met today in Ghana to discuss creating a standby force. Nigeria’s chief of defense staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, told the meeting: “The focus of our gathering is not simply to react to events, but to proactively chart a course that results in peace and promote[s] stability."
Blinken said Tuesday that the U.S. strongly supports the efforts of ECOWAS to restore Niger’s constitutional order, but the African Union apparently opposes intervention out of concern that such intervention might trigger a civil war.
Meanwhile, in Sudan, where the Biden administration hoped working with two rival generals would pressure them to restore civilian democracy, the country has been torn apart as those two generals now vie for power. Days ago, the U.S. government warned of corruption and human rights violations in South Sudan, with one of the rival military forces, the Rapid Support Forces, apparently engaging in widespread targeted killing and sexual violence in the western Sudan region of Darfur.
Yesterday, the State Department called for the two factions to stop fighting. “Every day this senseless conflict continues, more innocent civilians are killed, wounded, and left without homes, food, or livelihoods. The parties must end the bloodshed. There is no acceptable military solution to this conflict,” it said.
*The expression “mending fences” appears to come from U.S. Senator John Sherman (R-OH), who in 1879 told reporters he had to go home to take care of his farm (including mending his fences) when everyone had a pretty shrewd idea he was trying to repair political relationships to shore up support, hoping for a presidential nomination. (It didn’t work: his chief manager was Representative James A. Garfield (R-OH), who ended up getting the nomination himself.)

April 1-2, 2023 Epilogue (or SJO-MIA-CLT-IAD)
We hope that in short order, we’ll look back fondly on our trip and not think about the agonizing journey home. It was a full - seriously long, FULL – two days of travel starting with a pleasant, early drive from Monteverde to San Jose, with Olgar, from our drive to Monteverde, and Juan Carlos. We even had a stop on the side of the road to observe a howler monkey family.
We checked-in for our American Airlines flight from San Jose to Charlotte, where we’d connect to DC. Only once checked-in, we learned that the flight was delayed. It wound up being the first of four delays on day 1 of our return. Because most people had connections they would miss, every passenger on the plane wound up clambering to be rescheduled, at first individually at various AA desks, then all together at a gate assigned to the task. We had our turn at the desk – were minutes from being rescheduled (!) on a different airline – only to have the AA attendants shut down the process and direct us all to reenter Costa Rica through immigration/customs, pick up our bags (note to selves — only duffels with wheels next time), get in line to rebook our connecting flights for day 2, retrieve hotel/food vouchers from AA, and proceed to the Crowne Plaza on shuttle busses for the night. Turns out the incoming flight was arriving the next day, so our flight was going to be delayed until the next day. Good Grief!! We divided and conquered – Sebbie collecting luggage and Jillebob heading up to the ticketing desk to get in line for re-booking. By the time she got to the front of the line, Seb joined her. We successfully (we thought successfully - more on that to come) re-booked the Charlotte-DC connections for our morning flight on day 2. We sprung for a taxi – finding what turned out to be a decent “official” driver in the sea of aggressive sheisters we’d been warned about. We got to the hotel before yet another line formed for check-in by everyone on the flight who took a shuttle. Dinner – a buffet – was marginal — a real let down after 2 ½ weeks of food that ranged from quite good to excellent. Sometime in the evening, Seb realized from an AA email that the attendant had only re-booked Jillebob’s connecting flight for day 2, even though he looked us in the eye and told us that we were rebooked together. Seb spent ages in the hotel in an online chat with AA customer support. The rep was courteous enough, but a response of “sorry for the inconvenience” is more than inadequate for having been lied to!!!! In the end, there was nothing the rep could do: all flights/all airlines from Charlotte to DC were reportedly full at that point. At least the hotel managed the large, last-minute influx of patrons well, even giving us a wake-up call (not requested). We were already up, and again took a taxi back to the airport to beat the masses from our flight and get our situation resolved before the agents were worn down by what promised to be a long morning of dealing with irate people.
Back at SJO on day 2, the first rep was super nice, checked us in and managed to get Seb on a United flight that got in later than Jill, but at least before the midnight arrival she was slated for. Oops, then when flight delays started again and it wasn’t clear she’d make the sweet booking she’d landed the day before, Jill had to rebook to a later Charlotte to DC flight. Then, several delays later, Seb had to re-book because she’d miss her re-booked United flight. United couldn’t do it, so another on-line chat with AA resulted in us being back on the same Charlotte to DC flight. In the end, we lost track of how many delays there were: an hour here, 90 minutes there…. Finally, the plane for the flight out of San Jose arrived, with added chaos of two AA 1248 flights: one on-time for April 2 and another one delayed from April 1, also leaving on April 2 — both listed on the departure board within minutes of each other. There’s humor in here somewhere. We lined up – again - and once on-board, doors closed, they announced that our destination was Miami. It almost felt like being kidnapped. It wasn’t clear whether the same plane would continue to Charlotte or whether we’d go through immigration/customs in Miami and have to figure out getting to Charlotte. On touchdown, one flight attendant welcomed us to Miami and wished us well for our connecting flights. SERIOUSLY!?!?!? Finally sorted by the airline, while we were still on the plane, we all put our bags back in the overhead bins; they brought on a fresh crew (we had to land in Miami because the last crew had reached the FAA’s flying duration limit); and shortly after, we took off again. All things considered, as grumpy as many of us were, we and our fellow passengers were pretty calm about the outrageous situation. Well, all but the few who had gone ahead and rebooked to Miami connections only to not be let off the plane.
Passing through immigration/customs in Charlotte was remarkably quick and easy. We were both a little disappointed that we did not get to use our Global Entry, just a quick wave through by a border agent. A short wait to board in Charlotte and 55 minutes later, we landed at Dulles. The events of these two days will fade and we’ll be left with memories of tortoises, sea turtles, sloths, tarantulas, an array of birds, among others and great experiences across the equator and back.

can't access southwest.com from vpn
VPN blocking Southwest.com
VPN blocking on Southwest.com can be a frustrating experience for users trying to access the website securely and privately. Many people use VPNs to protect their online activities and data from being monitored or intercepted by third parties. However, some websites, including Southwest.com, may block access to users who are using VPN services.
Southwest.com may block VPN users for a variety of reasons, including security concerns, compliance with regional regulations, or preventing fraudulent activities. When Southwest.com detects that a user is accessing the website through a VPN, it may restrict or deny access to certain features or content. This can be particularly problematic for travelers who rely on VPNs to access Southwest.com while abroad or to secure their internet connection on public networks.
To bypass VPN blocking on Southwest.com, users can try connecting to a different VPN server or using a different VPN protocol. Some VPN providers offer dedicated IP addresses or obfuscation techniques that can help disguise VPN traffic and avoid detection by websites like Southwest.com. Additionally, clearing browser cookies and cache or using incognito mode can sometimes help circumvent VPN blocking measures.
It's essential to note that attempting to bypass VPN blocking on Southwest.com or any other website may violate its terms of service. Users should always respect website policies and local regulations when accessing online content through VPNs. If experiencing persistent VPN blocking issues on Southwest.com, users can reach out to Southwest customer support for assistance or consider accessing the website without a VPN connection.
Southwest.com access restrictions
Title: Understanding Access Restrictions on Southwest.com
Southwest.com, the online portal for Southwest Airlines, offers convenient access to booking flights, managing reservations, and exploring travel options. However, users may encounter access restrictions that affect their experience on the website. These restrictions are in place to ensure security, protect user privacy, and maintain the integrity of the booking process.
One common access restriction on Southwest.com is related to geographical location. Due to various legal and regulatory reasons, certain features or services may not be available in all regions. For example, users accessing the website from outside the United States may encounter limitations when trying to book flights or access certain promotions.
Another aspect of access restrictions pertains to account authentication and verification. To safeguard user accounts and personal information, Southwest.com may require users to verify their identity through methods such as email verification, phone number verification, or security questions. This helps prevent unauthorized access and protects against fraudulent activities.
Additionally, access restrictions may be imposed based on user behavior or compliance with terms of service. Users who engage in suspicious or abusive behavior, violate the website's terms of use, or attempt to circumvent security measures may face temporary or permanent restrictions on their account access.
It's important for users to understand these access restrictions and comply with the website's policies to ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience when using Southwest.com. By respecting these limitations and following guidelines, users can make the most of the services offered by Southwest Airlines while ensuring the security and privacy of their personal information.
Circumventing Southwest.com VPN block
To ensure a smooth and secure booking experience, Southwest Airlines has implemented strict security measures on its website, including blocking access through VPNs. While VPNs are essential for privacy and security reasons, they can sometimes trigger Southwest's security protocols due to the potential risk of fraudulent activities.
If you encounter issues accessing Southwest.com while using a VPN, there are a few steps you can take to circumvent the block. One effective method is to disable the VPN temporarily and access the website using your regular internet connection. This should allow you to browse the site without any restrictions.
Another way to bypass the VPN block is by connecting to a different server location within the VPN. Sometimes, certain server locations may trigger the security measures on Southwest's website, so switching to a different server can help you access the site smoothly.
It's important to note that circumventing Southwest's VPN block may violate the airline's terms of service, so proceed with caution. It's always recommended to respect the website's security measures to ensure a safe browsing experience for yourself and other users.
In conclusion, if you're facing difficulties accessing Southwest.com due to a VPN block, try disabling the VPN temporarily or switching to a different server location. Remember to always prioritize security and follow the website's terms of service to avoid any potential issues.
VPN bypass for Southwest.com
Title: How to Bypass VPN Restrictions on Southwest.com
As internet censorship and geo-blocking become more prevalent, users often turn to Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to bypass such restrictions. However, some websites, like Southwest.com, have measures in place to detect and block VPN traffic. This can be frustrating for travelers or users seeking to access Southwest's services from restricted regions. Fortunately, there are methods to bypass VPN restrictions on Southwest.com.
One approach is to use a reputable VPN service that offers dedicated IP addresses. Unlike shared IP addresses, which are commonly used by VPN providers and are more likely to be flagged by websites like Southwest.com, dedicated IPs are less likely to be detected and blocked. By connecting to Southwest.com using a dedicated IP, users can avoid detection and access the website seamlessly.
Another method is to utilize obfuscated servers provided by certain VPN services. These servers disguise VPN traffic as regular HTTPS traffic, making it harder for websites to detect and block VPN usage. By enabling obfuscated server features in the VPN settings, users can effectively bypass VPN restrictions on Southwest.com and other websites that employ similar blocking measures.
Additionally, users can try switching VPN protocols to ones that are less likely to be detected by Southwest.com's blocking mechanisms. Protocols like OpenVPN with TCP or IKEv2/IPSec are known to be more reliable in bypassing VPN restrictions compared to protocols like PPTP or L2TP/IPSec.
In conclusion, while Southwest.com may have measures in place to block VPN traffic, there are several strategies users can employ to bypass these restrictions. By using a VPN with dedicated IP addresses, obfuscated servers, or alternative protocols, users can access Southwest.com from restricted regions without encountering any issues. However, it's essential to choose a reputable VPN provider and to adhere to Southwest's terms of service when accessing their website through a VPN.
Southwest.com VPN connectivity issues
Southwest.com is a popular airline website that travelers use to book flights and manage their reservations. However, some users have reported experiencing VPN connectivity issues while trying to access Southwest.com.
VPN, short for Virtual Private Network, is commonly used to enhance online security and privacy by creating a private network from a public internet connection. Users employ VPNs to protect their data from cyber threats and access region-restricted websites. However, some websites, like Southwest.com, may block or restrict access to users connected through VPNs.
When users face VPN connectivity issues on Southwest.com, they may encounter error messages, have difficulty loading the website, or experience slow loading times. These issues can be frustrating for travelers trying to book flights or access their accounts securely.
To troubleshoot VPN connectivity issues on Southwest.com, users can try the following steps:
Disconnect and reconnect the VPN connection.
Clear browser cookies and cache.
Try accessing the website from a different browser or device.
Disable any ad-blocking or security extensions on the browser.
If the issue persists, users can contact Southwest.com customer support for further assistance.
In conclusion, VPN connectivity issues on Southwest.com can be a hindrance for travelers looking to access the website securely. By following the troubleshooting steps mentioned above, users can work towards resolving these issues and enjoy a smooth booking experience on Southwest.com.
