NEW ZEALAND'S PASSIVE MEDIA PROBLEM
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Renee Takutai Diane Warwood
Let me tell you about some interesting points raised by @SiobhanFTB, Twitter (July 2022). To begin with, let us look at what these tweets mean, and how can we connect them to traditional news outlets and media outlets? "Passive voice isn't just a journalistic vice," writes Twitter user @SiobhanFTB, citing examples of passive voice, such as media outlets using terms like "rents have shot up" rather than "landlords have raised rent." Examples of this can be found in New Zealand media outlets, such as "Rents in NZ have shot up 7% in just one year." 1News (April, 2022) and “How much do rents increase in NZ?” Moger, L (March, 2022) These media outlets use non aggressive wording, even though landlords alter the prices of rent and increase it yearly. In addition to this, I think it is also fair to say that @SiobhanFTB also made some other excellent points.
After being contacted by user @jw8c with a response to @SiobhanFTB's original post, @TomPadfoot (July, 2022) responded with another significant tweet written underneath. "In most cases, the power dynamic is wildly in favour of the seller, so "pay crushingly high rent" or "be homeless" isn't really much of a choice." Which begs the question, why does the media use passive voice instead of focusing on those who are complicit in rising rents, inflation, low wages, and so on? Is it fair for New Zealanders to be fed such passive news?
First we must look at whether landlords are really to blame for the spike in rents. Then we criticise the media for not using more honest titles in their articles about market rents in NZ rising and leading their audiences astray.
According to Trade Me's latest Rental Price Index TradeMe (2022), inflation rose to a 6.9% high in the first quarter of this year, and rents increased 7% year on year to the end of March. In Taranaki, the average weekly rent increased by 18% year on year to $530 in March. The Bay of Plenty had a standout month for landlords, with the median weekly rent surging by 9% to reach $600 for the first time on record. The median weekly rent in Manawatu/Wanganui reached $500 for the first time, representing a 14% year-on-year increase. Waikato median weekly rents increased by 7% to $520.
According to Trade Me's property sales director Clancy, A (2022), “this is bad news for renters, who are paying significantly more for everyday items across the board, including housing costs.” While rents in some areas are skyrocketing, the national median weekly rent has remained unchanged since February Lindsay, S (April 2022)
Tumblr media
New Zealand Inflation rate
Is it still possible for landlords to blame rising costs on inflation if rents are rising faster than inflation? Should the New Zealand media call out landlords instead of using the passive voice? I would like to look at another example presented by @SiobhanFTB, on Twitter, and then decide whether the media's use of non-aggressive titles paints an inaccurate picture of the truth when it comes to reporting the news.
@SiobhanFTB makes a point of the media using non aggressive wording in their titles when it comes to wages, “wages are stagnant,” instead of “employers froze wages.” sugar coating the harsh reality of modern day wages.
Wages often stagnate as the minimum wage increases, but why? This year the minimum wage increased to 21.20 as of April 2022. This is helpful for many but a problem for some. Minimum wage is the minimum amount a worker must be paid legally no matter the profession, however some employees become upset about this. When the minimum wage increases it brings the amount paid to those who may not necessarily be working a highly skilled job closer to those who do. For example the average pay of fresh university graduates is roughly $30 an hour Prosple (2022.) Every time the minimum wage increases it makes that gap in wage marginally smaller and oftentimes employers are unwilling to raise the wage of other workers as they are only legally obligated to do so to those already on minimum wage. As a result of this, wages for employees are stagnant and unchanging despite the fact that they work in skilled sectors. However, I do not believe the problem is because the minimum wage is rising but employers are not willing to offer a higher wage to their employees.
The Warehouse Group NZ reported Net Profit After Tax of $55.0m for the half year TWG (2022), an increase of 88.5%. The Warehouse Group NZ owns iconic brands such as The Warehouse, Warehouse Stationery, Noel Leeming, Torpedo7, 1-day and TheMarket. Over 280 Warehouse workers walked out on strike in 2021 over wages, covid-19 safety measures, and precarious working conditions. After six months of negotiations, workers claimed that insecure labour, short-term contracts, and equitable and transparent wage increases had not been addressed Jacobson A, StuffNZ (2021) The warehouse had argued that the wages were fair as they were paid 19 cents over minimum wage at the time being $20 p/h. Many workers had also complained of being loyal to the company for years yet having stagnant minimum wages, only having their wage increase if they were paid minimum wage and the amount was legally increased by the government.
With a net profit of over 55 million in half a year, you may say that corporations are freezing wages to maximize profit. However, wages are stagnant in the eyes of the media. “NZ Workers Hit by Surging Living Costs” Peters T, WSWS (July 2022) when it should be “NZ workers are not paid enough to live.” or “Kiwis wages need to rapidly rise, even if inefficient businesses crumble,” when it should be “Employers should pay Kiwis more, even if it decreases their gigantic profit margin.”
As a result of New Zealand media's passive approach, real-life issues are portrayed as positive rather than as harsh realities. The New Zealand media likes to sugarcoat the issues of rent and wages and see the world through rose tinted glasses. Instead, it calls out the big corporations and wealthy for taking advantage of inflation and living costs, blamingthe insane spikes in rent on inflation when rent is rising faster than inflation. NZ media proclaims NZ workers are hit with surging living costs, when if we were paid living wages by our employers this wouldn’t be an issue. The passive voice NZ media has is heavily biased as to not paint corporations and the wealthy in a negative light, but to simply say “it is what it is” when it comes to employees not being compensated enough. As far as citizenship is concerned, this may lead viewers astray and make them wonder what the real reason is behind so many Kiwis struggling to pay their bills. In a political sense, it is biased so as not to create blame when there is obvious evidence of large businesses and landlords harboring money.
The mainstream media in New Zealand paint a false narrative and take everything at face value without investigating like a credible media outlet should. Many people rely on these outlets to form an opinion as citizens to develop a view of the world. However, how can their view be true if the New Zealand media is so biased and docile?

Upper Tama Lake

Upper Tama Lake by Jos Buurmans Via Flickr: This shot of the Upper Tama Lake and the conical peak of Mount Ngauruhoe is one of the rewarding views at the turning point of the Tama Lakes Walk in the Tongariro National Park. The climb up the scree slope to this view can be quite challenging due to its steepness and exposure to the freezing wind. However, the 360-degree view from the ridgeline is definitely worth it.

Chasing Waterfalls: Waihi Falls
The wonderful Emma has inspired this series. We will be heading to some of the beautiful waterfalls of New Zealand.
The first waterfall of the series is located 40 km from Dannevirke, near the Tararua District, Manawatu-Wanganui Region in the North Island. It is relatively easy to find. If you are using GPS just put in Waihi Falls Road and it will take you there! Otherwise, get yourself to Dannevirke then exit towards Weber Road. Then turn off on Oporae Road and follow the road for about 20 minutes.
Time: 10-minute walk Difficulty: 1/5 Road: Mostly tar sealed & well signposted
Armed with our towels & Good Buzz Kombucha, we went through the gate and down the path on the right. The trail was quite slippery as it had been raining/drizzling on and off. There are some steep parts and high steps but overall a short, easy walk to the falls.    The falls were pretty spectacular! We popped our stuff on a tree trunk and got in. Experiencing it with no one else around was breathtaking. I swam to the bottom of the falls. There were slippery moss covered rocks, and some hidden underwater. I almost nailed my shins on the rocks so take note! Also, it wasn't a long or difficult swim, but the strong current is something to be aware of if you're not a confident swimmer.
Overall, a beautiful getaway from the city. It was incredibly peaceful and relaxing. I would recommend a visit to this unknown treasure.
To note: There is plenty of parking & a sheltered picnic area up in the car park.
