Since Halloween is coming up, what horror movies do you recommend?
SERA!!!! Hi hi hiiii omg pls bear with me I’m gonna recommend a lot cause I love so many and I have divided them into categories<3
Horror that makes me laugh (gives me a good giggle!!! Some of it is still scary but i am laughing also and that’s what’s important!!) here:
Both evil dead films (while amazing and scary in their own way and some of my favs ever ever EVER they are genuinely so funny and such a good time), killer clowns from outer space, happy death day, trick r’ treat, all the scream films, ready or not, tusk (lowkey this is horrific also tho TO ME), the lost boys, child’s play, re-animator (look up trigger warnings for this), bodies bodies bodies
Horror about healing (U have to understand something. I’m insane but these are movies about healing and I will fight abt it) anyways here:
Evil dead 2013 (horrifying and gruesome and so so gory but it is about healing!!!!!! It is to me!!!!), insidious 1&2, It (specifically 2017 because I did have such an insane phase but I’d say the 80s version and 2019 do fit), as above so below (I could write a million essays abt this movie), the conjuring (ONLY the first one. The other try to do the same and while some of it works, none of it is as sincere as this one)
CINEMA:
Psycho, the exorcist, Texas chainsaw massacre, Carrie, suspiria, house, the brood, the shinning, candyman, it follows, mandy, nope, the night house, we’re all going to the world’s fair
Miscellaneous shit that I like!!!:
Evil dead rise, the new scream films (I have a good time with them sue me!!! Also mason gooding hot!!!!), barbarian, malignant (silly, ridiculous, i love it so much), cam, all the saw films, the ritual, mama, sinister, Halloween, hellraiser (I have a newfound love for this after reading the book Clive barker u horny motherfucker), black Christmas, night of the living dead, the strangers

Photographing plastics from the sea
Tumblr media
Today i worked with the trash i collect from beach combing.
Inspired by Mandy Barker , i assembled my findings in a similar fashion to hers, giving a sense of being caught in a current. I edited the contrast to make it seem under the sea. It didn't turn out as i would like , i think if i used a different back drop and other coloured light , it may give a better atmosphere, at the moment it looks pretty motionless.
I first set up my objects in Mark Dion style , almost like a catalogue display . Dion sets up his found objects as if it were an archeological find , so i tried to capture that essence. These objects are very interesting to me as at first glance i don't pay it much attention , but after a ponder, i recognize what the item is and how it got there.
Items (an educated guess)
~plastics from water bottle
~milk carton cap
~sea glass(beer bottle)
~toy car
~various rope and twine
~ monofilament fishing line
~bouy from a gill net - reinforced for depths
~ insulation foam (fridge)
~coffee filter
~detergent bottle
~toaster bottom?
~shrimp pot meshing
I plan to use these objects in different ways as i find them intriguing.

August 2018
Summary: My Senior Year. Man was I a mess. I was doing my stage management internship while writing my twenty four page research paper. Which, I had no plan for at all that year. So, I decided last minute to just do it on my favorite fairytale and just run with it. My professor had me rewrite the first half of my paper at least ten times that semester before I even got it right. And, by that point I was stressing on whether or not I was going to even be able to finish my paper.

Gizo Students Battle Plastic Pollution Creatively
Tumblr media
In an age where the clarion call for environmental stewardship echoes across continents, a unique initiative in the Solomon Islands stands as a beacon of hope and ingenuity. Last week, 25 schoolchildren from Gizo and Emmanuel schools, in the Western province, embarked on a transformative journey. Through a three-day workshop held at the Gizo School Hall, facilitated by Dreamcast Theatre Solomon Islands in collaboration with Plastic Wise Gizo, these young minds were not just educated about the perils of plastic pollution but were also empowered to be part of the solution.   Turning Tides Through Art Under the theme "Trash Art", the workshop served as a vibrant canvas, blending the realms of creativity and environmental conservation. The initiative, which builds on the success of a similar event held in Honiara in 2022, demonstrates the power of art to communicate complex issues such as plastic pollution and its threat to marine biodiversity. Renowned UK artist Mandy Barker's remote collaboration with Solomon Islands' children last year laid a foundational stone, showcasing how everyday plastic waste, when viewed through the lens of creativity, can transform into compelling pieces of artwork.   A Community's Commitment to Change The workshop was more than a lesson in art; it was a clarion call to action against the backdrop of a looming environmental crisis. Samantha Niunaras, Dreamcast Theatre Solomon Islands workshop facilitator, highlighted the dual focus of the initiative: to enlighten the participants about the environmental threats posed by single-use plastics and to inspire them to conceive how they, in their youthful zeal, can contribute to safeguarding their environment. Echoing this sentiment, British Deputy High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, Her Excellency Emma Davis, underscored the gravity of plastic pollution. With a ban on single-use plastics commencing on 1st March 2024, the workshop's timing is pivotal, symbolizing a collective stride towards mitigating plastic waste and preserving the pristine nature of the Solomon Islands.   Engaging the Next Generation The involvement of Plastic Wise Gizo, spearheaded by Founder and Chairwoman Rendy Solomon, exemplifies the importance of engaging young minds in environmental conservation efforts. By instilling a sense of responsibility and stewardship towards the environment from an early age, the initiative aims to foster a generation that values sustainability and is proactive in its pursuit. She said: It is crucial for programmes like these to reach communities, especially schools where primary children can adopt a mindset valuing inorganic waste. Engaging them during their curious and formative years ensures a lasting impact on future generations, allowing them more time to continue this important work.   A Sustainable Future in Sight The culmination of the workshop saw the children showcase their imaginative creations, crafted from plastic waste, serving as a testament to what can be achieved when community, creativity, and commitment converge. Funded under the UK Climate Diplomacy Fund, this initiative not only highlights the pressing issue of plastic pollution but also demonstrates the tangible steps that grassroots efforts are taking to combat it. As Neil Nuia, Dreamcast Theatre Creative Director, aptly noted, the workshop marks a significant milestone in the community's ongoing environmental journey. It's a vivid reminder that while the battle against plastic pollution is daunting, collective action, especially that which harnesses the boundless energy and creativity of the youth, can pave the way for a more sustainable and plastic-free future.
A Canvas for Change
The Gizo workshop is more than just a story of environmental activism; it's a narrative of hope, creativity, and resilience. It exemplifies how art can powerfully drive social change, demonstrating how communities can influence and interact with their environment. As the Solomon Islands, and indeed the world, grapple with the scourge of plastic pollution, initiatives like these are pointing the way forward, showcasing that every small step contributes to crafting a greener, more sustainable world.   Sources: THX News & British High Commission Honiara. Object/Place Research Task
Photographer Notes
Edward Burtynsky
Canadian Contemporary Landscape Photographer that usually shoots in large format (8x10) that deals with the impact human intervention has had on the natural environment
Large scale landscapes that show loads of detail, very immersive and surreal to look at
Project "water" deals particularly with different man-made water systems
Chris Leslie
Accomplished photographer and filmmaker that has documented stories from around the world
Particular recognition for work documenting the disappearing landscape of Glasgow due to mass demolition in 60s and 70s.
people in poverty moved into new high rise flats in an attempt to improve their quality of life - captures difference in time comparing utopian solution to poverty to them now where they aren't taken care of and rotting away
Challenges: access to the buildings (people may not want their privacy being invaded by a photographer), safety concerns due to old buildings not being structurally sound
Mandy Barker
Deals specifically with global warming and pollution issue of marine plastic and has a very extensive body of work
reaches out to communities in order to get the vast amounts of waste she shoots for her projects
shoots a lot in studio and composite her images together
"Penalty" project is a double entendre and refers to both the literal subject of football and the world cup which the footballs are associated with but also the consequences that they are having on the environment
Andy Hughes
Another photographer that deals with the subject of marine plastic and trash, particularly washed up trash on beaches and coastlines (intertidal zone)
"Dominant Wave Theory" marked a significant milestone as one of the pioneering photographic monographs specifically focused on the subject of plastic pollution.
Challenges: possibly making the plastic look aesthetically pleasing like he does in his photos, may have to cover large areas looking for a specific item
Andy vs Mandy
Mandy shoots in the studio the composites her images together, where as Andy shoots on location using various additional lighting, especially overpower flash to create moody dynamic images - two very different styles and approaching the same items
Andy thinks more about scale and uses depth of field creatively and his backgrounds are important in his images
Mandy combines scientific facts within her work
Bernd & Hilla Becher
German photography duo that documented disappearing architecture across north America and Europe over the course of 40 years. Structures usually included various water tanks
Typologies with repeating composition, shooting angle and exposure allowed differences between the structures to be easily seen - fair comparison
When lined up next to each other, its like their own individualities shine through
2. Expanded Analysis of Photographers
Hiroshi Sugimoto
Tumblr media
Sugimoto is a Japanese photographer and architect. He often combines his knowledge of structure and form of buildings and spaces from his architect background into his images as they are very well composed, clean and lined up. He also experiments a lot with different camera techniques and the optical effects these have on his images - such as long exposure. This is certainly true of his "theaters" series, a typology-type project he began in the late 70s where he would showcase many different classic American movie theatres built in the 1920s-30s using a large format camera on a very long exposure, using only the light of the projection as a lightsource. The results in very surreal, almost chilling photographs. His master use of light and long exposure (representing time) in perfect unison is symbolic of time passing and the effect it has had on these outdated forms of entertainment as modern culture had been growing and evolving.
Michael Wolf
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wolf is a German-born photographer and photojournalist. His work focuses largely on contemporary city living, especially in densely populated asian countries. This overcrowding of the cities he works in has become a main focus behind his work and how he approaches his subjects (being buildings and complexes) in order to highlight this. This is particularly evident in his series of images called "Architecture of Density" - which was taken in Hong Kong and published in the form of a book in 2012. The photographer expertly captures the spatial experience of the city's inhabitants by removing any sky from the frame and flattening the space until it becomes more like a series of patterns rather than a building. This results in a feeling of endlessness in terms of size which is an amazing way of visually demonstrating the sheer scale of overpopulation happening in Hong Kong.
