This time in 1964, the cast of the Gielgud-Burton Hamlet was preparing for rehearsals. Here's how Hume Cronyn got involved with the production, as told by himself in A Terrible Liar: A Memoir. Looks like we have Jessica Tandy, Cronyn's wife and frequent costar, to thank for his Polonius:
The Guthrie Theater’s very first production in 1963 had been Hamlet. Tony had asked me how I’d like to play Polonius, and I told him in no uncertain terms that I would not, having only just recovered from playing what Joe Mank had described as “an Egyptian Polonius”—Old Sausage Knees. Now, less than a year later, there was a cable from John Gielgud asking me if I would join him and Richard Burton in a Broadway production of Hamlet, to play—of course—Polonius. The cable arrived in Minneapolis toward the end of our first season. I showed it to Jessie. “But of course you must do it.” “Why?” “Why? It’s a marvelous part . . . and with John and Richard. . . .” “Look, I’ve seen Hamlet six or seven times: Barrymore’s, Gielgud’s, Evans’s, Breen’s, Grizzard’s, Olivier’s. . . . I’ve even played it myself—after a fashion—and I cannot remember one single Polonius. All I remember is a fatuous and prolix old man approaching senility. . . . To hell with it. Besides, I’m tired.” “But it’s perfect for you.” “Thanks a lot. If I’m as prolix as all that, I don’t need further rehearsal.” “You’re mad.” “Possibly—but I’ll just send a polite reply saying I’m committed elsewhere—that I have a conflict.” “Most actors would give their eyeteeth to be in this production. And you adore John. I think you’re crazy.” “You’ve already said that. . . .” I had a conflict all right. I had one with my wife, who rarely, rarely, urges me to do anything for which I lack an appetite. It was a strange reversal of roles. I had urged Jess to play Miss Collins in Portrait of a Madonna, Agnes in The Fourposter and Miss Graves in Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, and perhaps in one or two others. Now, she would give me no peace. She was passionate on the subject and finally resorted to outright insult. I cabled to Johnny G. saying I would be delighted to join his company. We were to go into rehearsal in January of 1964.

'In Time has become an unexpected hit on Netflix 12 years after its release. The 2011 sci-fi movie, which was written and directed by Gattaca's Andrew Niccol, starred Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, and Cillian Murphy. In Time is set in a world where humans don't age past 25 years old. At that point time is then used as currency, and they spend or earn the remaining years of their life, meaning that the rich live unnaturally long and the poor typically can't afford to live far beyond their 30s.
Netflix has revealed their Top 10 highest-performing English-language movies for the week of September 18 through September 24. The sci-fi movie placed shockingly high on the chart, taking No. 3 thanks to 5.7 million individual views accruing a total of 10.4 million hours viewed despite a dismal 37% score on Rotten Tomatoes. This is the second time the movie has spent a week on the Netflix chart, though the first time took place before 2023, so the weeks are not consecutive.
The In Time Cast Is Even More Famous In 2023
One possible reason for In Time exploding back onto the Netflix chart is the fact that the ensemble cast of the movie is star-studded. While the stars were buzzy at the time, they have gone on to even bigger success since then. This includes Timberlake, who was nominated for an Oscar for his song "Can't Stop the Feeling!," which was written for the movie Trolls...
His co-star Seyfried has also achieved incredible success in the intervening years. She followed her 2021 Oscar nomination for David Fincher's Mank with an Emmy win for her role as Elizabeth Holmes in The Dropout. Murphy has also risen in prominence since his role in In Time, as he is the star of Oppenheimer, which became one of the biggest movies of 2023 when it opened alongside Barbie on July 21, kicking off one of the most robust box office periods since the COVID-19 pandemic shut down theaters in early 2020...'

House Of Dracula - 1945
Tumblr media
Svengoolie will be showing this movie tonight !
House of Dracula a Universal Horror film from the year 1945.
After the events of House of Frankenstein, the yet again revived Wolf Man Larry Talbot is still seeking release from his condition. He ends up in Dr. Edelmann's place for treatment and accidentally finds Frankenstein's Monster in the caves under the house. Count Dracula is also there to find a cure for vampirism, but it is only a ruse to get near the nurse Morelle, upon whom he has set his sights.
This film is also notable for having a female hunchback assistant, though she is treated as a sympathetic and kind character (and is quite pretty to boot).
The film was the last serious Monster Mash film for Universal. Next up, the comedy duo Abbott and Costello would stumble upon the horrors of the studio.
The film was developed initially with the title Wolf Man vs. Dracula to be directed by Ford Beebe with Bela Lugosi reprising his role of Count Dracula. After actor Boris Karloff returned for a two-film deal with Universal and several requests from the censorship board, the film was put on hold for nearly six months. House of Dracula went into production directed by Kenton with a screenplay by Edward T. Lowe, who took elements from the Wolf Man vs. Dracula script while adding in Frankenstein's monster to the plot. Many cast and crew members returned from House of Frankenstein, including John Carradine in the role of Count Dracula, Glenn Strange as the monster, and Lon Chaney Jr. as both the Wolf Man and Larry Talbot. The film went into production on September 17, 1945, and finished on October 24. The film uses large sections of music from previous Universal feature films and footage, sets and props from other early Universal horror films. The film was released on December 7, 1945. Historian Gregory Mank described it as "the final serious entry of Universal's Frankenstein saga". It received predominantly negative reviews in its early New York screenings, while retrospective reviews have been predominantly lukewarm.

“Teach me…Take me…I want to taste you.”
- Paula Vogel, Indecent. Said in various moments by multiple characters.
A slightly less horny post today, Indecent has been one of if not my favorite plays for the past 6 years or so. Masterfully written, beautifully produced by every company I’ve seen or worked with, and has made me cry without fail every time. For those unacquainted, the play follows the mostly true story of the life of one Sholem Asch, a Jewish playwright in the early 20th century in Poland after he has written what would become his most successful and most controversial play of all time, The God of Vengeance. This play was received with much shock and horror as much as it was awe and adoration. It went on a world tour, and eventually landed in Broadway, where it was a resounding success. However, the more conservative attitudes of the time gave the play some trouble. Mainly, it contains one of the first modern open relationship between two women on stage. More than that, while it is a scandalous relationship and a forbidden one, it is beautiful, and loving, and true. This depiction of a same sex relationship in a positive light caused an uproar which resulted in the cast and production crew being arrested on charges of indecency. There’s more in Vogel’s play but I won’t spoil it if you want to read it or watch it if it’s being produced near you. The relationship between Rifkele and Manke is one of the most beautiful things I have seen on stage or read, their words evoke such sweetness and care and desire, they know how dangerous their love is, and in The God of Vengeance, it proves to be their downfall. But for the moment it exists on stage, the moment when the rain is falling, the moments when Rifkele says those words to Manke, “I want you to teach me,” “I want you to take me,” “I want to taste you,” I can’t help but long for that kind of love, that kind of desire. It’s so beautiful. It makes the next scenes all the more impactful when Vogel crushes your soul.
Anyway sorry for normal posting on the horny posting blog but I just love this play so goddamn much I can’t help it. I guess it kind of applies lol. Anyway go see/read it, there’s a pdf online for free.

Máni, bróðir Sólar ok Mundilfara

Einsamall Draupnis dǫggvar hlunnr losar sitt bensævar rann ok ferðask um, leitar svars við spurn þeirri hvert hǫlda grund þessa leið. Fyrr vas hitt, es harra Hliðskjálfar gatk sjalfan, skipt er á gumna giftu, geðskótan vel blóta. Ǫll hefr ætt til hylli Óðins skipat ljóðum, algilda mank, aldar iðju várra niðja, en trauðr, þvít vel Viðris vald hugnaðisk skal-di, legg ek á frumver Friggjar fjón. Verðum flest at forðask fornhaldin skǫp norna; Láta allir ýtar Óðins orð fyr róða. Var Helgi magri á réttri braut at halda bæði Þórr ok munka dróttinn?
[ENGLISH - Máni, brother of Sól and Mundilfara]
Máni, brother of Sól and son of Mundilfara, rises with dark arms over Þingvellir. From a distance Ǫxará bursts her vivid streams over the upper valley's edge into the lowlands. All this is near Lǫgberg, the highest place for justice and conciliation that ever was on this ground of no raging royal hand. Around the Almannagjá, the booths of chieftains are lighted by small fires. But this night is more silent and talks are barely audible from afar. Þorgeirr covers his head with a cloak, speaks to dark worlds beneath and landvættir that populate the earth above. In solitude he frees from his body and starts to travel, searching for an answer to the question to where this soil shall be led. It was different in former days, when I could worthily sacrifice to the mind-swift, there is change in the fortunes of men, Lord of Hliðskálf himself. The whole race of men to win Óðinn's grace has wrought poems. I recall the exquisite works of my forebears, but with sorrow, for well did Viðrir's power please the poet, do I conceive hate for the first husband of Frigg. We must renounce many an anciently held decree of norns; All mankind casts Óðinn's clan to the winds. Was Helgi magri right in believing both in Þorr and munka dróttinn?

2023 BUFF - Dispatch #6
Green’s Party is proud to be covering the 2023 Boston Underground Film Festival, which kicked off Wednesday at the Brattle Theatre (Cambridge, MA) and wrapped Sunday.  I’ve been lucky enough to cover the festival since 2016 (the fest took off in 2020 and 2021, and I was unable to attend 2022).
I did not get to attend The Dunwich Horrors shorts program about New England-based stories, but I did get to see one of the shorts Skin & Bone. I jumped out of my seat when I saw this in the program because it was directed by Eli Powers, who I had worked with years ago. He was Amanda Seyfried’s assistant on Ted 2, which I worked on in locations and production office. I bring this up because Seyfried is both a star and producer on Powers’ film. With most films at BUFF there are some notable cast members, but it is very rare that you see an Oscar-nominated actress / Emmy winner in the program, let alone among the shorts. Amanda has always been a great actress, she has especially shown her dramatic skills in films like Lovelace, First Reformed and Mank. Here Seyfried runs an isolated farm in a rural area and a drifter (played by Seyfried’s husband actor Thomas Sodoski) starts to have haunting visions of men trapped inside the bodies of animals on the farm. This is a big swing for Eli and it really shows what you can do in a short amount of time with limited locations. It’s also the perfect fit for The Dunwich Horrors, because it felt like an isolated farm in Western Mass. or Vermont. Both actors are mesmerizing. Way to go Eli!
Skin & Bone won the award for  Best New England Film (David Kleiler Memorial Award) at the award ceremony!
Coming up: while the 2023 BUFF is now over, I have some more coverage coming up including interviews and further reviews.
For info on this year’s #BUFF23: https://bostonunderground.org/
Stay tuned to Green’s Party for more coverage of this year’s fest!

'The new Netflix limited series Ripley is entirely in black and white for very deliberate reasons. The psychological thriller is based on the renowned 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley by celebrated novelist Patricia Highsmith, the first of her 5-part "Ripley" series that also includes Ripley Under Ground and Ripley's Game. Ripley's cast is led by an exceptionally chilling Andrew Scott (Fleabag, Black Mirror, All of Us Strangers) as the enigmatic Thomas Ripley, a con artist living in New York in the early 1960s. Steven Zallian, the acclaimed screenwriter of Schindler's List, American Gangster, and The Irishman, wrote and directed the entire 8-episode miniseries.
Ripley is given an unexpected job to locate an old friend named Richard 'Dickie' Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn) who's avoiding his responsibilities in Atrani, a luxurious coastal city in Italy. Ripley, funded by Dickie's father, travels to Atrani where he encounters Dickie and his girlfriend Marge Sherwood, played by Dakota Fanning. The Talented Mr. Ripley was previously adapted in the 1999 film written and directed by Anthony Minghella (The English Patient), in which Matt Damon portrayed Ripley, Jude Law played Dickie and Gwenyth Paltrow plays Marge. The Talented Mr. Ripley has been adapted several times for film and television, but none have been shot completely in monochrome until Zallian's Ripley.
Ripley's Show Creator Envisioned The Story In Black & White Due To The Book's Cover Photo
Zallian's goal was to create an incredibly faithful adaptation of the novel
Zallian was inspired to shoot his Ripley adaptation entirely in black and white as a way to honor the original vision of Highsmith's novel. As he was developing the series, he was inspired by the monochrome book cover of his edition of The Talented Mr. Ripley and began to envision the series entirely through that lens as he wrote it. Zallian told Vanity Fair, “The edition of the Ripley book I had on my desk had an evocative black-and-white photograph on the cover. As I was writing, I held that image in my mind. Black and white fits this story—and it’s gorgeous.”
Zallian's main intention of the monochrome in Ripley is to provide a more faithful interpretation of the novel. Unlike some of the previous iterations of Highsmith's "Ripley" series, Zallian's adaptation appears more dark and unsettling from the Ripley trailer alone. The decision to shoot entirely in black and white is also a nod to the time period in which Ripley is set, amplifying the fact that the story takes place more than 60 years ago. David Fincher made a similar stylistic choice with his 2020 Netflix film Mank. Aside from his Academy Award-winning work on There Will Be Blood, Ripley's Director of Photography, Robert Elswit, previously shot the celebrated monochrome film Good Night, and Good Luck.
Ripley's Black & White Format Fits The Story's Dark Themes & Genre
The gray of the ocean & pitch blackness of blood are perfect for Ripley
The black-and-white aesthetic of Zallian's Ripley aligns seamlessly with the overall tone and themes of the story. The Netflix adaptation appears to be substantially darker and more matter-of-fact in its design than previous Ripley adaptations, particularly the 1999 adaptation with a more charismatic performance from Damon. The monochrome also emphasizes the film noir feel of the production, drawing similarities to classics of the genre such as The Maltese Falcon (1941), Double Indemnity (1944), and Strangers on a Train (1951), which was also based on a novel by Highsmith.
From the use of black and white in the trailer alone, Ripley often blends into the world around him, heightening the mystery around his character's ability to dissolve into environments with ease. The range of various shades of gray in Ripley creates an interesting composition thanks to the advancement of modern digital cameras that are able to capture more detail in degrees of light and darkness. The gray of the ocean and the pitch blackness of blood make for a more ominous and impactful visual display in Ripley. Most series don't have an organic reason for filming in black and white, but Ripley is exactly the kind of production that makes the best use of modern monochrome.
Netflix's Ripley Being In Black & White Highlights Its Major Differences From The 1999 Movie
Netflix's Ripley is a much darker psychological drama compared to the Damon film
The use of black and white throughout the entire 8-part series creates a stark contrast between Netflix's Ripley and the classic 1999 movie. The movie puts a lot of emphasis on the vivid color and lavishness of coastal Italy and Dickie's life, which is a major difference between the 1999 film and Highsmith's novel. Additionally, the 1999 film's interpretation of one particular death seems to be more out of pure desperation and passion than something premeditated, which avoids a more sinister theme of the book. Ripley makes scenes of this nature more dreary and emotionally devoid, making it more of an eerie psychological drama.'

When is the new serial podcast season 3 series#
When condensing months (and in some cases, years) of reporting down into a single sentence to make terms or practices digestible for lay people, it’s done with an incredible efficiency and economy of words. In doing so, the show has retained a skill that it demonstrated in the Adnan Syed case and carried through its examination of Bowe Bergdahl’s capture. Some of the cases in the first two episodes (now available to listen) range from bar fights to weapons possession to drug charges. Embedding in that Cleveland courthouse, the aim of this season is to present a representative sample of how our current American judicial system functions. Instead of following a single crime or unexplained decision as they did in their inaugural two collections of episodes, this next batch of stories from “Serial” is focused more on an institution. That the intro is concerned with spatial architecture just as much as the people involved in what goes on inside them is at once a signal that Season 3 is a bit of a departure for the show, but one that still maintains the podcast’s impeccable attention to detail. Only, instead of a riveting crime yarn introducing the audience to hardscrabble detectives and unsolved murders, it starts with a bunch of buildings. The beginning of “ Serial” Season 3, which focuses on daily life within a Cleveland courthouse, opens like the beginning of a novel. Fingers crossed Netflix does end up renewing the show and David finds time to work on it - and we get to see what that "reimagining" looks like.įor can't-miss news, expert beauty advice, genius home solutions, delicious recipes, and lots more, sign up for the Good Housekeeping newsletter. But aside from that, all we've really heard is this intriguing tidbit from actor Holt McCallany: A third season of Mindhunter could mean "a complete reimagining of the show," he told The Hollywood Reporter. Understandably, there's not a ton of information just yet - we don't even know for sure if Mindhunterseason 3 is happening at all! It seems safe to assume that a season 3 might include more BTK Killer vignettes (Dennis Rader wasn't caught until 2005, after all) and expand on the story of Bill's adopted son, Brian (there's definitely lots to unpack there). Ressler interviewed during their time with the FBI, publications such as Vulture have supposed such infamous killers as Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, and Jeffrey Dahmer might appear on the show in the future.Īre there any Mindhunter season 3 spoilers yet? " may revisit Mindhunter again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn't fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own," the spokesperson said.īut, knowing who real-life agents (and the inspiration behind the show) John E. Both of these are also projects for Netflix, and a spokesperson from the streaming service said there's still a possibility that Mindhunter will return once David's schedule clears up.
When is the new serial podcast season 3 series#
Ugh.īefore you start panicking, though, keep this in mind: Mindhunter e xecutive producer David Fincher is currently busy working on the second season of his series Love, Death, & Robots and a feature film called Mank. Netflix has yet to officially confirm a third season of their hit crime show, and on January 15, they announced that they had released the Mindhunter actors (including Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv) from their options contracts. What happens with Bill's adopted son, Brian? Will the series ever show us the arrest of the BTK Killer? And, perhaps most importantly. If you've watched all of Mindhunter season 2, you're likely sitting with all sorts of questions about what the future holds for Holden Ford, Bill Tench, and the rest of the hit Netflix show's cast of characters. David is currently tied up with other projects, however, so for now, the Mindhunter actors have been released from their contracts.Netflix hasn't confirmed Mindhunterseason 3 yet, but director David Fincher at one point reportedly had plans for five total seasons.Mindhunterseason 2 dropped on Netflix on August 16, 2019.

Finally got round to watching Mank on Netflix. It’s the true story of  screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and his development of the screenplay for Citizen Kane (1941) . I thought Gary Oldman gave an excellent performance supported by an excellent cast including Amanda Seyfried as Marion Davies and Tom Burke as Orson Welles (wish we could have had a bit more of him). I loved the choice to film in black & white but I did find the whole film a bit long.
