Artwork from the Panama Defense Force's printed literature regarding Agenda 1990, laying out the nation's plan to take full control of the Panama Canal ("The Canal Is Ours!") among other goals. Shortly thereafter, the PDF would be disbanded by Manuel Noriega after failing to oust him.

Ideas for future episodes of “Epic Rap Battles of History”:
1) Manuel Noriega vs. Saddam Hussein (theme: dictators who were taken down by the United States)
2) Steven Seagal vs. Ip Man (theme: martial arts fraud against one of the greatest of all-time. Think of this as a spiritual sequel to Lance Armstrong vs. Babe Ruth)
3) Jordan Belfort vs. Charles Ponzi (theme: two of the most infamous con artists who ever lived)
4) Joel Miller and Ellie Williams vs. Jean Valjean and Cosette (theme: fictional traumatized father figures and their daughter figures)
5) Avatar Aang vs. Dmitri Mendeleev (theme: master of the four elements against the founder of the periodic table of elements)
6) Hiawatha vs. Sitting Bull (theme: two of the most well-known Native American leaders)
7) Mary Wollstonecraft vs. Ruth Bader Ginsburg (theme: two of the most well-known feminist icons)
8) Buck Rogers vs. Flash Gordon (theme: the original sci-fi heroes)

i’m using my collegiate education to make a detailed and historically accurate tier list of notable 20th and 21st century Latin American dictators. there are only 12 squares on the list and two tiers named- we’re looking at least 48 figures to research and assign a tier. wish me luck, recommend some people to cover, and stay tuned

I’ve never actually been to Panama.
I don’t speak Spanish for a start.
Idk much about the country’s history either.
Aside from the basics of Spanish colonial fuckery in the area (the poor natives!), Scotland trying to BUY Panama and going bankrupt and eventually losing their independence to England (OOPS!).
Also the Panama canal and Manuel Noriega’s ousting. (All because the CIA wanted their fair share of EL CÖCAÄÍEÑER!!! And he sold it to the cartels instead).

Osama bin Laden dies
He immediately goes to hell, where the devil is waiting for him.
"I don't know what to do here," says the devil. "You are on my list, but I have no room for you.
You definitely have to stay here, so I'll tell you what I'm going to do: I've got a couple of folks here who weren't quite as bad as you.
I'll let one of them go, but you have to take their place. I'll even let YOU decide who leaves."
Osama bin Laden thought that sounded pretty good, so the devil opened the first room. In it was Manuel Noriega and a large pool of water. He kept diving in and surfacing empty-handed. Over and over and over. Such was his fate in hell.
"No," said Osama bin Laden, "I don't think so. I'm not a good swimmer and I don't think I could do that all day long."
The devil led him to the next room. In it was Ayatollah Khomeini with a sledgehammer and a room full of rocks. All he did was swing that hammer, time after time after time.
"No, I've got this problem with my shoulder. I would be in constant agony if all I could do was break rocks all day," commented Osama bin Laden.
The devil opened a third door. In it, Osama bin Laden saw Bill Clinton, lying on the floor with his arms staked over his head, and his legs staked in a spread-eagle pose. Bent over him was Monica Lewinsky, doing what she does best.
Osama bin Laden took this in disbelief and finally said, "Yeah, I can handle this."
The devil smiled and said, "OK, Monica, you're free to go."

I've been thinking about the B99 cast and how they would all die in the castle:
Jake would be interested in the mystery and willing to play along but he's very scared of heights and could not do the scaling. Without that intell he doesn't grasp the full danger, gets annoying and gets drank.
Rosa was a storong contender for survival, depending on when she arrives at the castle. If it's midway through the series then she's much better at being undercover and doesn't blow it. She has the acrobatic skills to scale. She carries an axe. But ultimately what gets her is that she's attracted to evil people like Manuel Noriega. If she doesn't fall for the Count, she may very well fall for the Brides. I would bet she gets turned rather than drank, she would be a very impressive vampire.
Terry is...not great at being undercover and he looks like a threat. He could probably power through the castle doors but I'm betting he gets drunk up before it comes to that.
Amy gets on Drac's nerves. She goes fairly quickly. Even if she makes it through the first part of the visit, she absolutley throws a fit when he takes her stationary.
Boyle makes it until the Brides. He doesn't even fight back; he's had romantic hook ups with older women, it's cool. The only variable is if he needs to make it back to Nicolaj, but I don't see him surviving the wolves.
Gina throws a hissy fit when the Count throws her mirror out the window. She tries to assert dominance as she does with Pimento but Drac is not having it. Drank.
Captain Holt is interested in the mystery but he corrects several points in Drac's "history" monologue and gets drank for daring to know better.
Hitchcock willingly goes to the Brides.
Scully is very very sick and probably gets thrown outside for wolf food.
Only two characters could survive the Castle: Doug Judy and David Santiago, for completely opposite reasons.
Thank you!

FULL SCRIPT DIALOGUE:
First thing is that we get you out of Bogotá.
There’s an orphanage in Cumeral. It’s out of the guerrilla zone and away from the narcos.
We get you a passport. From another country, we can depose you about Escobar and the siege.
This is about keeping you alive.
(In Spanish) If Pablo Escobar finds you… he’ll kill you in a heartbeat.
__________________
Well, she’s the only witness we got that can tie Escobar to the palace massacre.
No.
Well, we keep her in hiding until things cool down, and get immunity in exchange for her testimony-
Well, the next time your wife decides to bring home a human hand grenade, how about she hands it to you?
Sleep with a communist? That would be downright un-American.
__________________
We’re almost certain. It was, uh... it was hard to tell. The… connection was bad. They were calling from Panama.
Ambassador, word is Manuel Noriega is providing safe harbour for the narcos, and possibly shipping points for their cocaine.
__________________
(In Spanish) What’s happening, Carillo?
(In Spanish) So, you practice your English with me?
Do your bosses know you’re doing this?
Well, do they have to be from Medellín?
__________________
Well, how about you, uh… clue us in?
Right. Well, good talk, Lou. Very, uh… enlightening.
__________________
You got your nails done. It’s-it’s your colour, Colleen.
It’s simple. I just need your signature… right there.
What I want you to do is sideskip a little bullshit bureaucracy and help someone stay alive. You really think I wouldn’t be asking you if it wasn't important? She’s my informant. And she could be the key to bringing down the whole Medellín cartel, so come on, Colleen, whose side are you on?
__________________
I was driving to the church. Was with my buddy, John. He was my best man. We were late. It was fucking blazing outside, 110 degrees. Whole bridal party was there sweating their balls off, I’m sure. All of a sudden, I stopped the car.
I don’t know if she actually made it to the altar.
Yeah. She forgave me. Eventually. Married a stockbroker from Dallas.
Randy… I think. Trust me, she’s better off.
He’s gonna talk.
(In Spanish) It’s about time, Navegante.
What do you got?
You said you had information. You didn’t say Gacha.
__________________
Could be money. The reward for Gacha is one million US. I’d say that’s pretty good motivation.
It’s worth taking a risk.
That’s a beautiful dress, Ambassador Noonan.
__________________
Here, Elisa’s ID.
Take her to Cumaral. My contact there agreed to hide her.
Brother, what do you suggest we do?
Look, she’s… she's important.
To us.

« On Thursday night, Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, reminded the US why he will never be president. His voice grates, his visage a cross between a squinted grimace and scowl. He looks like Manuel Noriega, the ex-Panamanian dictator, without the scarring. On a personal level, he lacks humor, warmth, wit or uplift. He is ham-handed, an awkward social warrior. »
— Lloyd Green, Department of Justice appointee under President George H.W. Bush, at The Guardian.
Ron DeSantis is term-limited as governor of Florida. Running for POTUS seems to be his solution for impending unemployment in early 2027.
It's a pity for him that he's been so mean to Disney. He blew his chance to get a job as a security guard at Disney World when his term ends.

Today is the anniversary of the U.S.'s military invasion of Panamá, which occurred on December 20, 1989.
Tumblr media
Julio Yao writes in the article "Legacies of the U.S. Invasion of Panama":
On December 20, 1989, former president George H.W. Bush ordered the invasion of Panama. The U.S. 82nd Airborne division pummeled Panama City from the air, as U.S. soldiers from the 193rd Brigade clashed in the streets with troops from the Panamanian Defense Forces (PDF) and the Dignity Battalions, a militia of workers and campesinos. Thousands of civilians were caught in the crossfire as the heavily populated El Chorrillo neighborhood was set ablaze. By the time General Manuel Noriega surrendered on January 3, 1990, 23 U.S. soldiers and 314 PDF troops had been officially killed in the fighting. Civilian casualties were estimated in the thousands. According to an independent investigation by former U.S. attorney general Ramsey Clark, as many as 7,000 people may have been killed. Mass graves were uncovered after U.S. troops had withdrawn, and over 15,000 civilians were displaced.
Despite the civilian body count, no Panamanian government since has authorized a commission to investigate the killings that took place during the foreign military aggression. No administration has attempted to demand reparations from the United States, nor filed a lawsuit against the United States before the International Court of Justice at the Hague.
Over twenty two years later, the U.S. “Christmas invasion” of Panama is being lost to memory, yet its legacy lives on in profound ways that continue to shape both domestic and foreign policy in Panama.
[...]
Tumblr media
Panama’s tendency to submit to U.S. policy has resulted in a foreign policy devoid of independence. For example, Panama is one of the few countries in the world that has not established diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China, though it maintains relations with Taiwan in accordance with “checkbook diplomacy.” The U.S. government has prohibited Panama’s gestures toward diplomatic relations with Beijing.
Guided by this protectorate concept and right-wing policy, Martinelli’s administration [(2009-2014) had] offered its unconditional support to Israel and withdrawn all backing for Palestine. It [had] distanced Panama from the Central American process of regional integration, withdrawn from the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN), and increased ties with France and Italy’s conservative former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, who was blackmailed by Italian arms company Finmeccanica into brokering a corrupt bilateral security agreement with Panama in which Panama was overcharged for military hardware, including helicopters, radar, and mapping systems. It signed a free trade agreement with the United States and Canada, and [had] given natural resources to foreign corporations, especially mining companies, including Vancouver-based Bellhaven Copper and Gold, Ontario’s Aur Resources, Toronto’s Inmet Mining, and New York’s Dominium Minerals Corporation. All of these actions [were] fully aligned with the foreign policy and national security interests of the United States.
Tumblr media
This was, after all, the ultimate goal of the 1989 U.S. invasion. At a meeting on December 10, 1985, four years before Bush ordered Operation Just Cause, then U.S. national security adviser John Poindexter met with Noriega with several U.S. demands: (1) Panama should allow the training of Nicaraguan Contras in the Canal Zone; (2) PDF troops should invade Nicaragua to justify U.S. aggression toward Nicaragua’s Sandinista government; (3) Panama should help dismantle the Contadora Group, a regional initiative to resolve the military conflicts that were destabilizing Central America; and (4) Panama should consent to continued U.S. military presence in Panama.
[...]
The move [of the invasion] destroyed Panamanian sovereignty and the PDF, dismantled security structures, reformed the political system, and returned power to the old oligarchy. This paved the way for new forms of foreign domination, and the Panamanian people continue to suffer its legacy.

Movie Review | Miami Vice: Freefall (Mayberry, 1989)
Tumblr media
Miami Vice in its fifth and final season was a very different show from its heyday. Michael Mann’s name continued to be slapped onto the end credits, but the lightning in a bottle quality of the first two seasons, with their mixture of effervescent aesthetics, defiance of conventions and willingness to leave the audience in violent disconcert, had long since dissipated and the show had become increasingly straightforward, formulaic. Probably the easiest way to demarcate the phases of the show would be the colour schemes. The first two seasons favoured pastels, which provided ironic comment on the edgier subject matter. The third and fourth seasons favoured neons, hinting at a more straightforward idea of cool. And the fifth season shifted to an even darker, high contrast colour scheme, with deep blacks in the interiors and at night, contrasting with the sunburnt daylight hues. And musically, the sometimes complex and layered, sometimes giddy music by Jan Hammer had been replaced by a more conventional hard rock sound by Tim Truman.
There’s an obviousness to this final aesthetic, that brings to mind the laboured style of modern prestige television, which can lean on drab colour schemes and ponderous camera moves to lazily gesture towards seriousness. (I should note that I pretty much can’t stand HBO sheen.) But the overwhelming feeling here is of exhaustion. Episodes increasingly settled matters through shootouts, with a higher gunplay quotient than in previous seasons. The moments of bemusement offered earlier are increasingly scarce. And the personal cost of the job seems to weight increasingly heavily on our heroes Crockett and Tubbs, as their efforts seem to make little difference in the grand scheme of things. (The series is certainly an ‘80s cop show and carries a certain cavalier attitude about law enforcement as one can expect, but it’s been more willing to interrogate those qualities than I expected going in, and has always had a social conscience.)
So there is a certain dulled quality one can expect with the finale, but I must report that I found it an immensely satisfying finale to the series. Like the other two-parters, the narrative is more expansive than usual, although along with the lower number of needledrops, this is an area where the smaller budget for this season shows. The first half has the boys heading down to a Latin American dictatorship to extract a politically friendly despot (modeled after Manuel Noriega, but played by Ian McShane in brownface makeup that makes him look like Muammar Gaddafi). There are shootouts and battles and an exfiltration from the presidential palace, although it rarely feels like they’re actually in Latin America. (The combat footage is recycled from “Stone’s War”, which is one of two episodes to feature the most bananas stunt casting in the show: G. Gordon Liddy as a CIA scumbag.)
But the second half feels like Vice much closer to its peak, setting off a series of double crosses that evoke a violent sense of whiplash, each twist of the plot punctuated with as much blood and gunfire as ‘80s network TV would allow. Crockett’s and Tubbs’ exhaustion turns to rage, leading to a thunderous finale that mirrors the iconic capper to the pilot “Brother’s Keeper”, with the boys heading down to the pier to settle things once and for all. Crockett even dual wields like he did in the pilot. I do think it’s a mistake to not have reused Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight”, although Honeymoon Suite’s “Bad Attitude” isn’t the worst song in the world.
And on a superficial note, it’s nice that both the boys return to wardrobes somewhat similar to the ones they had originally. Back to the pastels for Crockett. No more awful prints for Tubbs. Some of the other regulars are awkwardly integrated. Gina and Trudy barely figure into the episode, and Castillo’s hair in his final scene looks very… unconvincing. (I believe Edward James Olmos as shooting Stand and Deliver around this time, in which he has a combover, so I suspect he’s wearing a wig in the scene.) But at least Switek’s gambling problem, which the season tried so hard to push, finally pays off with something interesting. And there’s no way I can be objective about this, but having spent half a year obsessed with this show, the final scene between Crockett and Tubbs had me tearing up a bit.

Here's an interesting stort about a time my dad was in the military and his unit was trying to get this guy named Manuel Noriega out from hiding in the Vatican embassy. Obviously, it's a very bad idea to bomb an embassy for many reasons. You know what they did to get him out? They set up speakers outside of the embassy to play heavy metal and rock music and essentially rick-rolled him into surrendering (yes, "Never gonna give you up" was on the playlist). An article on the endeavor.
You see how they did that without murdering innocent civilians in the process? I mean, they for sure weren't happy about rock music being blasted at all hours of the night but compared to the alternatives, that was a relatively mild way of getting Noriega to surrender.
So tell me why Israel, who essentially has complete militant control over Gaza, can't think of something like that to get Palestinians to turn over Hamas? I mean, they're allegedly going after Hamas, right?
I'll tell you why: it's because they don't give a shit about Hamas. They never did. They want an excuse to carry out a genocide and what better way than to use Hamas to justify bombing schools, hospitals, homes, refugee camps, etc.?
This isn't Israel defending itself. This is them using Hamas to justify genocide. They don't even care about their hostages being held by Hamas considering the one hostage they released had a glowing review of her captivity.
