So, I have a mixed relationship Magic the Gathering. I haven't played for years for various reasons and I'm not a huge fan of the really try hard, rules-focus culture of the player base. This is the point of the game, I know, but it's how I feel. But on the other hand, the worldbuilding of their creative team is simply on point. Frankly, D&D could learn a thing or five from the amount of imagination, craft and simply compelling ideas they manage to fit into their many planes. So I like to keep on top of the set releases and ogle all the new art for that very reason. But I stopped reading the fiction around Amonkhet/Ixalan when I realised that it generally involved the characters doing incredibly asinine things so the pre-determined story could move along. My point is, I haven't really followed things. But this morning, I got looking at the wiki page for the Phyrexian invasion. Spoilers for the phyrexian invasion plotline beyond this point!
Long story short, fantasy robots invade every plane in the setting. Honestly, these big meta-threats don't really do anything for me. I'm much more interested in hearing about the local quirks, problems and struggles of each of the planes. Every time one of the Big Bads stomps around, it dilutes that. "Check out this really cool techno-magical world! But don't forget about the phyrexians! They're a thing, you know! Watch as they assimilate one of the few ligitimately interesting planeswalkers! Hm? Technomagical what now? Oh, the setting! Right, yes, here it is..." Anyway, the Phyrexians are basically the fantasy Borg. They invade, take people over, so on and so forth. I got reading this wiki page and it has a list of planes and how they got invaded. There's few details, but it covers the essentials. Then I noticed something. Eldraine, a plane of powerful fae magic and well-organising military culture of knights, widely defeated and the ruling courts collapse under the onslaught. Until a spell macguffin wins the day. Strixhaven, a literal magic school who were warned and prepared to meet the invasion. completely overrun and all the faculty killed. Until a spell macguffin wins the day. Kamigawa, a plane of technomagical mecha, organised samurai and skilled ninjas. Suffer heavy losses and barely hold the invasion, but seem to be fighting a losing battle. Theros, a plane of powerful gods and greece-style heroes. Widely defeated and many gods fallen. Fiora, a plane known for widespread and convoluted conspiracies and schemes. Successfully and decisively defeats the invading force. Hold up. Run that back a bit. Fiora? The political scheming plane?! A world that can be best summed up by the phrase "chronic backstabbing disorder"?! They defeated the fantasy borg where magic, heroes and literal gods failed?! For context, Fiora was the setting for the two Conspiracy sets. Which are, in my biased opinion, some of the best and most fun sets MtG has ever done. They broke down the tryhard numbers experience and set up an environment where you needed to scheme with other players to try to win. It was great. Details are sparse. All the first page says is "Queen Marchesa secured the grip on her throne and the loyalty of her people by leading the defence of the plane and successfully beating the Phyrexians back." and the Fiora page simply reads "Queen Marchesa refused all who trespassed." Be still my beating heart. Queen Marchesa, The Black Rose, Mother of Assassins, poisoner, necromancer and Monarch of Paliano, is just the best and one of my favourite MtG characters. Learning that she took one look at this invading army of assimilating fantasy robots and said "No. I don't think you will." really just made my day.

Hi Mark! This is my first time requesting birthday trivia! I'm working on my PhD in physical chemistry, which has become difficult lately, with many trajectory-determining deadlines approaching. Lately, I've been struggling to find the motivation to complete the boring tasks sometimes required in research, especially since I went into research for the creative aspect.
So, rather than birthday trivia, I would like to request birthday advice: how do you get through the monotonous, boring, uncreative tasks you have to do?
If no on the advice, the first deck I built was Marchesa, the Black Rose, built around the Modular mechanic, so any trivia on those topics would be nice.
Thank you!
My trick is to try and make a game out if it. Gamifying tasks tends to make them more fun. For example, one time I had to add in a bunch of cards to the file, so I timed myself for each one to see if I could break my previous record.
Happy Birthday!

I really liked my Dimitri cards I made, so I decided to finish off with the other lords! I didn't spend AS much time on them, though, but I did my best with quick edits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had a few rules I tried to follow
Make as little edits as possible to the original cards
Try to only use legendary human cards
Try to match the skills and colors of the cards to the characters themselves
I'm not going to explain Dimitri since I already did in a different post. I'll just explain the other three.
Edelgard
Based on Marchesa, the Black Rose
Although Edelgard isn't necessarily a wizard, her affinity for magic makes this an ok match
I like the idea of her dethroning others, since she is kinda doing that by being a conqueror
Red - For her color scheme. Red in magic also tends to hurt others. A lot.
Blue - Seeks perfection. Blue in magic tends to take control of the field.
Black - Having the last word on her own life . Black in magic really likes their graveyards and dealing with life points.
Claude
Based on Rem Karolus, Stalwart Slayer
This is the only one of the four where I changed the creature type. The OG card was Human Knight. But Claude isn't really a knight, and I felt that this card (of the cards I researched and could find), was the closest to being something that matched him. So I changed it from Knight to Advisor, for being known as a tactician.
I called him Scheming Scion because a) alliteration and b) he is called both these things officially in his cipher cards
Flying because.... yeah, he's the flyer of the group. Haste - With being the man who is supposed to be two steps ahead, it only makes sense that he would be able to attack the moment he comes on the battlefield.
I think the skills work fine. Being a tactician, he would find a way to hurt others more, and prevent damage to his own side (works really well with Hopes too, tbh, since that is kinda what he aims to do).
Being the weakest of the lords (technically, by physical strength), I think him being a 2 versus the 3/4s of the others works fine.
Red - Adventurous and looks upon the world.
White - The closest to yellow for his color scheme.
Yuri
Based on Ramses, Assassin Lord
Devastating Beauty - Not only is he devastatingly beautiful, but he's also devastating as in dangerous.
Deathtouch makes sense for him imo, since he is an assassin-type character
I like the idea that he has an alternative win condition. It just fits his character imo. "If myself or another assassin under my command kills you, I win."
There isn't really a purple color, so I went with blue and black as close proximates.
Blue - Trickery, manipulation, and control.
Black - He's an assassin so... you know. Death.
He's a little bit stronger than I would like but the card was that strong so... here we are.

Do you play Commander? If so, what decks do you have?
I play Commander in a casual way. We'll do oldest to youngest decks here:
UBR Vorthos Villains, led by Marchesa, the Dusk Rose: This deck is, obviously, about villain characters. Mostly Bolas's shit. Sometimes Tibalt and Ob Nixilis get involved.
GWU Counters, led by Falco Spara, Pactweaver: I hated making a dedicated +1/+1 counter deck when I did my Merfolk one, so I cut back on the +1/+1 counters and worked more with keyword counters. Yeehaw.
RWB Vampires Suck Ass, led by Kroxa and Kunoros: Made mostly of Vampires and Enchantments. Haven't taken this baby out for a test drive yet.
BRG Tools For Fools, led by Henzie "Toolbox" Torre: This is kinda just a bunch of Black, Red, and Green cards that I really like. Haven't taken this one out for a test either.
Thanks for dropping by!

So tonight at FNM I played my Marchesa, Black Rose Commander deck against someone for the first time
My opponent scooped turn 6 when I Mark of Mutiny’d his Kalitas, which puts a +1/+1 counter on it, then sacrificed it to Jalira, Master Polymorphist, and because of Marchesa’s ability I just keep Kalitas permanently
That deck is bananas

Marchesa, the Black Rose
If you’d like to help support me to keep doing what I’m doing, as well as request your own card conversions, check my page or the notes for the links to my Patreon.
The only other MtG creature to win the Popularity Contest for this month (and admittedly the only other one on the poll) was Marchesa, the Black Rose, a character I’m sure many people were hoping to see at one point or another. Hopefully she doesn’t disappoint, especially since I had a lot of fun writing both her lore and her adventure seeds.

Yknow as much as I've shipped Gruulfriends i never thought about Sunstone and/or BDSM but with Chandra and Nissa and now you've awakened smth in me again Bace.
You should read my one Magic the Gathering BDSM fic, staring Liliana Vess and Marchesa the Black Rose in a steamy, kinky office romance, with Chandra and Nissa as supporting characters in an equally kinky relationship.
You know. Since I've gotten your attention, since I've got you here... 👀👀👀👀👀👀
