Tropes Draft #1: Apocalypse

Hi there! My friends @nakedmonkey, @smashingmagicklovely, @fat-fem-and-asian, and @harrietdyker played a game on Discord this week where we drafted a cast for a film based on common tropes in an apocalypse story, and now we're looking to settle a winner via poll! See short synopses of each movie under cut, but, of course, you're welcome just to vote based on vibes alone! At the end of the week, we'll reveal whose film was which.

[01.] sarah snook and ayo edebiri star in indie zombie drama ALL OF THE MEN ARE DEAD. snook plays alice, a world weary survivor trying to locate her younger sibling lachlan (liv hewson), who vanished after a fight. she rescues lost survivors brianna (ayo edebiri) and her younger sister lily (violet mcgraw), along with their dog tiger (DITTO THE DOG ! #1 on the call sheet) from a horde of zombies. In return, brianna says that she met lachlan a few weeks ago and directed them to the safe zone her mother zoya (sheryl lee ralph) leads before getting separated. she offers alice the same safety if they find their way back. despite her growing fondness for lily, alice can't shake a feeling of unease with her new companions. how does brianna know these lands so well? how did lily know alice's name? why did they leave the safe zone at all?

[02.] At Rainbow House, everyone is welcome and treated like family. At least, that’s what Eleanor Glass (Academy Award nominee Sigourney Weaver) and her wife Marcia (Academy Award winner Allison Janney) intended when they opened their LGBTQ youth center, which is under existential threat by the ominous corporation CTOA, headed by Maxwell Price (Academy Award nominee Colman Domingo). Now, in the aftermath of a nuclear apocalypse, Eleanor and Marcia have made efforts to turn the center into a safe house for all those who lost everything. Alongside longtime program director Charlie (Academy Award winner Ian McKellen) and Eleanor’s street-smart protege Sunny (Emmy winner Zendaya), they work tirelessly to protect everyone - even as CTOA continues its efforts to dismantle the organization. But when Price and his daughter Ashlyn (Emmy nominee Jenna Ortega) show up seeking shelter, Eleanor and Marcia must choose between their commitment to welcoming everyone as equals and their fight with Maxwell Price. Sunny’s secret relationship with Ashlyn complicates matters further, not to mention the possibility that CTOA had more to do with this nuclear fallout than anyone could have expected. [03.] The Letum Project: In a near distant future, the lethal Letum Virus that targets both the developmental and nervous systems simultaneously is turning victims into distorted, violent walking corpses, and is running rampant, dismantling societal infrastructures at a rapid pace and wreaking havoc on a global scale. A team of elite medical professionals, spearheaded by Dr. Freya Wright (Olivia Colman) and partner Dr. August Beck (Mads Mikkelsen), has been working tirelessly in an underground facility to find a cure for the past 10 months, but an unexpected death in the team brings into question what the motivation behind the project really is. Propelled by the mysterious and tragic death of her wife and fellow researcher, Allison Harris (Rebecca Hall), and the unexplained disappearance of friend and mentor, Dr. Amelia Bailey (Harriet Walker), Dr. Greta Harris (Dagmara Dominczyk) embarks on a rogue quest to find answers along with colleague and famed vascular neurologist, Gabrielle Gomez (Gina Torres). What they find above ground is a nightmarish scene; entire towns of infected people left to rot in now fenced zones, while survivors now live off of rationed food and essentials in a highly militarized state, the rich prioritized over the poor. But those aren’t the only truths Greta is forced to face. Allison and Gabrielle had been working alongside Amelia on a project they had kept from the rest of the team; a potential cure that might have been successful had Allison not found herself suddenly infected. Betrayed by the revelation, and now finding themselves hunted by Dr. Wright and Dr. Beck, Greta is left to wonder if there’s anyone left to trust. Aided only by sporadic morse code messages received through an old radio left to them by an anonymous source shortly before their escape from the facility, Greta and Gabrielle embark on a dangerous quest to find out.

[04.] Gödshead: A deadly virus has ravaged North America, leaving only sparse pockets of healthy populations behind in its wake: small towns and even smaller villages, family compounds, isolated homesteads surrounded by barbed wire fences. For years, former real estate agent Parker Kingston (Tawny Cypress) lived in such a protected home with her two daughters, the responsible Audrey (Jasmin Savoy-Brown) and the younger, far more rebellious Ryan (Amandla Stenberg), but the start of the film finds both Parker and Ryan reeling after a raider attack results in Audrey’s death and the sudden loss of their home. Grief-stricken, wounded, and utterly undone, mother and daughter must carry on anyway, taking sanctuary in a heavily walled village called Gödshead. Though their personal relationship is tumultuous, both Kingston women settle into something of a routine in the quaint village as they get to know its colorful denizens. They share a house with Dr. Hutchings (Paul Giamatti), a cantankerous but well-meaning history professor; Parker forges an intimate bond with Marnie Thompson (Samantha Sloyan), a kind if strangely fragile teacher who takes care of the village’s children while their parents work. They also get to know Mayor Willa Thompson (Frances McDormand), Marnie’s mother, whose stern but fair hand has ensured the village’s continued prosperity. But what exactly is the price of prosperity in an apocalypse? Parker and Ryan soon discover that there’s more to the village that lies beneath its seemingly peaceful surface—indeed that the trade-off for peace is a sacrifice that all citizens of Gödshead must be prepared to make. Winters are brutal in the mountains, and meat is scarce; there’s a lottery every winter in Gödshead, and everyone has a number.

[05.] The Sick: The zombie apocalypse did not end the world as we know it. Nobody knows how the infection works, who can pass it on and why, and what, exactly, it does to a person: they just know who is sick. They just know who to kill. When Claire (Romola Garai), an exhausted local news reporter, is assigned to report on Refuge, an organisation fighting to protect the hunted sick, she finds out her best friend, the good-hearted Raul (Diego Luna), has been a part of the organisation for months now, but she does not get to confront him about it before he strangely dies. Claire takes it upon herself to get his latest case, the young and funny Layla (Hunter Schafer) to safety in his honor. With the help of Raul’s boss, the eccentric Eddie (Ncuti Gatwa), they go on a cross-country journey towards the shelter built by Refuge. But on their way, Claire’s investigative tendencies can’t let go of the feeling that Eddie is hiding something, and Layla is getting sicker, worried for her companions’ safety around her. It’s a rest-stop encounter with Harper (Harriet Dyer) that gives Claire her answers and Layla the opportunity to protect her friends: a former colleague of Eddie, left to die by Eddie after getting infected, Harper, now part of a resistance organisation fighting for liberation of the sick, is out for revenge, but revenge is not as clear-cut a thing as people think. She tries to convince Layla to abandon Claire and Eddie’s shelter idea and join her, because Eddie can’t be trusted and Claire is too naive. And if Claire was not conflicted enough about the discovery, Raul’s cousin, the mysterious Mateo (Vico Ortiz), who blames Eddie for Raul’s death, is working with Harper, and tries to convince Claire to join the revolution, too, so she won’t die in it.

Hot Vintage TV Women's Bracket - List of the Ladies!

As promised below is a full list of all 130 women in the Hot Vintage TV Women's Tournament! Thank you to everyone who submitted their favs!

Just a brief bit of cleanup before the list. Thank you for all the submissions. If your submission didn't make it into the bracket or some of your propaganda isn't used know that I still appreciated the submission even if we weren't able to use it. Some things got cut for being outside the bounds of the tournament, some things got cut because the links were broken, etc. Anything I wasn't sure about got brought to family and friends for a second opinion. I did my best to keep as much in as possible but some things just ended up leaning too far outside of our criteria. If you notice some stuff that seems outside the criteria slip by it's because I tried to be very generous so as long as something wasn't obviously outside of our time period or rules I usually gave it a pass.

Anyway, I am working on the bracket as we speak and apologize in advance cause I don't think there's any way to make round 1 completely painless, as you'll see we have a pretty stacked line-up so I'm excited to see how things work out! Originally part of the Calaveras, Elias Navarez saw 8 year old Evelia Torres about to die in a witch burning. He killed everyone who was part of it and then adopted her, defecting from the Calaveras and started his own hunting organization. Originally just Calaveras defectors, the group grows to include other hunters, supernatural creatures, and even some ordinary humans, and the group grows into a family.

Torre Annunziata, Napoli: si danno alla fuga alla vista della Polizia, un 24enne e un 25enne arrestati per droga. Nella tarda serata di venerdì 22 marzo, gli agenti del Commissariato di Torre Annunziata, durante il servizio di controllo del territorio, nel transitare in via Vittorio Veneto, hanno notato due giovani a bordo di uno scooter ed il conducente, alla loro vista, ha accelerato la marcia per eludere il controllo. Ne è nato un breve inseguimento durante il quale il guidatore ha lanciato qualcosa sul manto stradale ma gli operatori lo hanno raggiunto e bloccato trovandolo in possesso di 5 involucri di marijuana del peso di circa 6 grammi recuperando, altresì, l'involucro lanciato poc'anzi dal prevenuto contenente circa un grammo di cocaina. Inoltre, essendovi fondato motivo di ritenere che potessero esservi ulteriori elementi in ordine ai fatti per i quali si stava procedendo, gli operatori hanno esteso l'attività di controllo presso la sua abitazione ed in effetti l'intuito investigativo ha trovato positivo riscontro poiché hanno rinvenuto un bilancino di precisione e diverso materiale per il confezionamento della droga. Dalle attività di seguito esperite, i poliziotti hanno accertato che il predetto era preposto alla consegna delle sostanze stupefacenti i cui ordini erano gestiti da un altro soggetto; per cui, dopo aver individuato quest'ultimo, gli agenti hanno effettuato un controllo presso il suo appartamento all'interno del quale hanno rinvenuto 2 involucri di cocaina, un panetto di hashish del peso di circa 100 grammi, un altro involucro contenente sostanza da "taglio" del peso di 10 grammi, un bilancino di precisione e 780 euro. Ancora, durante l'attività di controllo, gli operatori hanno sorpreso una donna, convivente dell'indagato, che, nascosta nel bagno, aveva tentato invano di disfarsi di una busta di cartone in cui sono stati trovati 3 contenitori contenenti marijuana per un peso complessivo di circa 41 grammi, altre 7 bustine contenenti 9 grammi circa della stessa sostanza e 2 involucri di hashish del peso di 5 grammi circa. Per tali motivi, gli indagati, un 24enne ed un 25enne, entrambi di Boscoreale, quest'ultimo con precedenti di polizia, anche specifici, sono stati tratti in arresto per detenzione illecita di sostanze stupefacenti, mentre la donna è stata denunciata per lo stesso reato; infine, al 25enne sono state, altresì, contestate 3 violazioni del Codice della Strada e lo scooter su cui viaggiava è stato sottoposto a sequestro.... #notizie #news #breakingnews #cronaca #politica #eventi #sport #moda Read the full article

Lande devastate

Tum tum, il cuore che batte nelle tenebre seguendo il ritmo del pendolo dell’orologio posto in alto sulla torre lasciata alle spalle, città in rovina o quasi. I fantasmi che vengono evocati in questi tempi, segnati da continui malefici, marciano sospinti dai venti freddi provenienti dalle lande desolate, ove solo la secchezza dei piccoli arbusti produce un flebile scricchiolare disordinato, l’unico rumore della natura, ormai morta, che è permesso.

Ecce homo! Proprio lì! Colui che condensa in se stesso il genere umano, figlio di generazioni di peccatori alla ricerca di ben più alto mistero. Lo vediamo camminare perso nei suoi pensieri con il cielo grigio sopra di lui, presagio di un diluvio universale. Lui che annegherebbe con un bicchiere d’acqua perché il rospo in gola, sintomo di rimpianti passati, non si vuole spostare o l’uomo stesso non gli permette ciò. Desideroso di soffrire, l’uomo ha sempre goduto in questo sadismo autodistruttivo perché è l’unico essere che necessita per natura della risposta alla domanda fondamentale… Essendo stupido non ha ancora capito che la risposta è che la domanda stessa non si sarebbe dovuta porre. Lo lasciamo camminare, noi che possiamo osservare la vita dalla platea, lasciando il palcoscenico agli altri. Gli attori sono coloro che non sanno vedere oltre al loro punto di vista della realtà, gli spettatori sono quelli che non hanno bisogno del corpo per vivere perché la loro stessa esistenza si snoda tra quegli arbusti che il l’uomo vede nel suo cammino. Guardano incuriositi quello strano animale che alza la polvere nella landa desolata.

Giunge la pioggia.

Nel più totale contrasto tra la polvere che si alza per amalgamarsi al fluido che discende, l’uomo è partecipe della novità che lo sconvolge. Spaventato continua a camminare, infondo quello è il suo mestiere. E le vesti da viandante si fanno pesanti e sporche da un’acqua che finora ha portato solo distruzione. I fantasmi strapazzati dai venti ora si fermano, non riescono a muoversi e paiono piombo, freddo. L’uomo li nota, loro lo notano. L’uomo cammina. Loro aspettano il termine del temporale. Loro erano il passato dell’uomo stesso, stravolto dai ricordi, che per quanto uno si possa sforzare non ricorderà mai esattamente. Il passato non esiste più nello stesso momento in cui esso diventa tale. Girandosi indietro le orme sono già state cancellate dalla pioggia e si notano solo dei leggeri solchi destinati a scomparire. Il viandante non saprà più dire quale granello di sabbia aveva calpestato lungo la sua vita, il passato è perso. L’uomo è perso. Il temporale finisce. I fantasmi riprendono la marcia seguendo il vento.

Tutto si ripete.

Il Signore degli Anelli - Frasi e pezzi

Durante le letture, mi capita di segnarmi pagine o frasi. Mi piace trascriverle e tenerle da parte, come un archivio prezioso di frasi che, esclusivamente per me, significano qualcosa.

In questo post ci sono le frasi di Delitto e castigo.

“Ma io mi sento esile, quasi stiracchiato, non so se ci capiamo; come burro spalmato su una fetta di pane troppo grande.”

“Vorrei che non fosse successo nel corso della mia vita,” disse Frodo. “Anch’io,” disse Gandalf, “ e così tutti quelli che in vita loro sono testimoni di epoche così. Ma non spetta a loro decidere. Tutto ciò che possiamo decidere è come disporre del tempo che ci è dato”.

“Lo merita eccome! Molti tra i vivi meritano di morire. E alcuni tra i morti meriterebbero di vivere. Tu puoi ridargli la vita? E allora non affretttarti a emettere sentenze capitali. Neppure i più saggi riescono a vedere tutti i risvolti.”

“Sì, signore. Non so come dirlo ma, dopo stanote, mi sento diverso. Mi sembra di vedere lontano, in un certo senso. So che intraprenderemo un lunghissimo cammino, nelle tenebre; ma so che non posso fare marcia indietro” [...] “Devo arrivare fno in fondo, signore, non so se mi capite”.

“E chi rompe un oggetto per scoprire che cos’è ha lasciato la via della saggezza.”

“Disperazione, o follia?” disse Gandalf. “Disperazione non è, perché la disperazione è soltanto per chi, oltre ogni dubbio, vede la fine. Non siamo noi. Saggezza è riconoscer la necessità, dopo aver soppesato ogni altra via, anche se sembrerà follia a chi si attacca a false speranze. Ebbene, che la follia sia la nostra copertura, un velo innanzi agli occhi del Nemico! Che è molto saggio e soppesa ogni cosa con estrema precisione sulla bilancia della sua malvagità.”

“Ma niente in verità mostra più chiaramente il potere dell’Oscuro Signore dei cattivi rapporti che dividono coloro che ancora si oppongono a loro.”

“Ma Saruman l’aveva piegata ai suoi scopi mutevoli e, secondo lui, illudendosi di migliorarla: perché tutte quelle arti e quei sottili accorgimenti, che gli avevano fatto abbandonare la saggezza di un tempo e che stoltamente immaginava opera sua, venivano da Mordor; sicché quel che faceva era nullità, solo una piccola copia, un modellino infantile o piaggeria da schiavo, di quella immensa fortezza, armeria, prigione, fornace di grande potere, Barad-dur, la Torre Oscura, che non tollerava rivali e rideva della piaggeria, in attesa della sua ora, sorretta dalla sua fierezza e dalla sua forza smisurata.”

“E allora ci potremo riposare e dormire,” disse Sam. E ridacchiò fra i denti. “Aspiro solo a quello, signor Frodo. Al riposo puro e semplice, a una bella dormita, e al mattino svegliarsi e mettersi a lavorare in giardino. Purtroppo al momento non spero altro. Tutti i grandi progetti importanti non fanno per quelli come me. Eppure mi domando se un giorno finiranno per mettere anche noi nelle canzoni o nelle storie. In una già ci siamo, d’accordo; ma io intendo: espressa in parola, capite, raccontata vicino al caminetto o letta in un volumone dai caratteri rossi e neri anni e anni dopo. E la gente dirà: ‘Parlateci di Frodo e dell’Anello!’ E dirà: ‘Sì, è una delle mie storie preferite. Frodo era molto coraggioso, vero, papà?’ ‘Sì, ragazzo mio, il più celebrissimo degli hobbit, scusa se è poco’”

“E Frodo non avrebbe fatto molta strada senza Sam, vero papà?”

“Andiamo, signor Frodo!” gridò. “Non posso portarlo al posto vostro, però posso portare voi e l’Anello.”

“Non essere troppo triste, Sam. Non puoi essere sempre lacerato in due. Tu dovrai essere uno e intero, per molti anni. Hai così tante cose da godere, da essere, da fare”.

Invece Sam aveva preso la via per Acquariva, e così si ritrovò sulla Collina mentre il giorno volgeva di nuovo al termine. E proseguì, e c’era una luce gialla e, all’interno, un fuoco; e il pasto serale era pronto, e lo stavano aspettando. E Rosa lo fece entrare e accomodare sulla sua sedia, e gli mise la piccola Elanor sulle ginocchia. Sam fece un profondo sospiro. “Bè, sono tornato,” disse.
