Romanov Rare Footage Analysis:

This footage was taken while the Romanov family was visiting Romania in 1914. In the foreground we see Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna bouncing up and down in a silly way. One might wonder why she is doing this. To find out we have to analyze this piece of rare footage.

Anastasia seems to be talking to someone in a white dress and a hat on. That person is who i believe to be Princess Marie “Mignon” of Romania (later Queen of Serbia). In the background of this footage we also see Queen Elisabeth of Romania (far right with baby Prince Mircea of Romania being held by someone), Tsar Nicholas II, Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna, and Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna (talking with people), and Grand Duchess Tatiana Nikolaevna who we see towards the end of the clip holding what looks like a Brownie Box Camera which the Romanov family used to take pictures.

Now what are Anastasia and Mignon doing? My belief is that Mignon went to greet Anastasia by naturally curtsying (which was the correct protocol) and Anastasia also did the same thing at the same time. I think Anastasia was doing several small curtsies afterward to kind of make a joke out of the moment (hence the giddy bouncing we see in the footage). OTMAA always felt embarrassed or shocked when close members of their family, or anyone at all, treated them with their normal official rules that the protocol demanded (aka curtsying or using official titles). Anastasia probably wanted to break the ice in that moment or make a funny joke of the curtsying at the same time thing. Also we can see the two girls having a good laugh so that could also be why Anastasia is bouncing so much. In the end of the footage we see Tatiana come up to the two girls with her camera ready and it looks like she is going to take a picture of them. The following photo could be the one she took but I’m not sure that it is.

"I liked the girls, they were natural, gay, pleasant and quite confidential with me when their mother was not present; when she was there they always seemed to be watching her every expression so as to be sure to act according to her desires. I studied each of them in turns."

Queen Marie of Romania and her military attire. The first uniform was worn during the parade which marked the Romanian Royal Family’s return to Bucharest in 1918, while the second one is her regimental uniform of the 4th Roșiori (Hussars) Cavalry Regiment.

King George said about Queen Marie of Romania that she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen in his life. Why did he find her so beautiful and admire her? Or what was it that George liked most physically about a woman? Eyes, hair, smile etc. Which one?

I think you're mistaken, George did not say that. You might be confusing it for the quote that George apparently said about his mother (this quote involved how his mother and empress Elizabeth were the most beautiful when he was a kid). Also, I think he said this conversation, so it is also hard to confirm.

George did have a crush on Marie, while he was in the Navy, in result to spending time with her in Malta. I think he liked her cheerful deposition, and I am sure he did think she was pretty. Queen Victoria encouraged him to choose between Marie and her sister, and it really wasn't a hard decision for George, he preferred Marie.

According to Marie, George would tease her about her "yellow" hair. In reverse psychology, maybe her bright blonde hair was something he thought was pretty. I just think overall he preferred the bright, easy going, blonde Marie, over the dark, moody and sophisticated Victoria Melita.

Hi! Thanks for the question and I'm so sorry for the very late reply!

This is a difficult one to answer as it's all guesswork.

In terms of wider family relations, it appears that no one really liked Carol (I don't blame them!!) when they visited in 1913, and Queen Marie of Romania wasn't particularly enthusiastic about Alix in her memoirs. She also explicitly said that she did NOT want to have someone with haemophilia in her family due to the suffering it brings. She mentioned being concerned about Carol marrying one of OTMA because of the possibility they could be a carrier of the haemophilia gene. I don’t know if she knew that Alexei had haemophilia when she knew the Romanov family, but I think she might have avoided the match if she was aware. Although any of Alexei's children wouldn't have had haemophilia (only passes through the female line), the chance of him passing from a fatal attack at any moment certainly wouldn't be ideal for a marriage match.

Elizabeth and Alexei were very close in age, and there are some very sweet anecdotes about them meeting when they were children. Elizabeth's mother was Russian, which might have made the match more favourable. Also, they seemed to know each other far better than Alexei did Ileana, as Elizabeth and her family visited Russia pretty much yearly. Because of Marie of Romania's fears about haemophilia, and her dislike (and pitying) of Alix, I think that the match with Elizabeth would have been more favourable.

Which also brings up the fact that many boys that suffered from haemophilia sadly didn't live long into adulthood. Alix's brother Frittie passed away after an accident where he fell out of a window, and Henry of Prussia (Alix's nephew) passed away after falling off a chair. Tragically, most children died before they reached their teenage years. Some people with haemophilia lived considerably longer, though. Prince Waldemar of Prussia (a cousin) lived to age 59, until he passed away due to a lack of medical supplies for a blood transfusion. Alfonso of Spain died when he was 31 after a minor car crash caused internal bleeding, and his brother Gonzalo also passed away after a minor car accident, aged only 19. Most famously, Prince Leopold, son of Queen Victoria, died from a fall that resulted in cerebral haemorrhage.

We will never know for certain, I'm afraid, but those are my thoughts! What does anyone else think?
