Crutchie and my dad have the same first name (Charlie) and when I came out as trans I told him I wanted to be called that name and he said "is that because it's my name? And my dad's name? And my dad's dad's name? You're keeping it running in the family?" And I was just like Ahahaha... yeppp! Of course!
He still doesn't know I actually named myself after a fictional newsboy from a weird niche 90s movie.

[whispering so u won’t notice i’m continuing to bother you while you’re busy]
oscar’s always been casually aware that morris is pretty. he thinks it’s obvious, anyone with working eyes can see his brother’s got a nice face. but morris has never actually been Told that he’s attractive, aside from maybe being mocked by people like pa and snyder. he thinks he’s ugly, ‘cause he’s… him. he’s mean and rude, and all covered in scars. he’s always mottled with bruises and cuts, dirty and bloody.
the first time a guy calls morris pretty, he’s trying to use or manipulate him. oscar tells him exactly as much, inevitably overhearing or finding out after the fact when morris tells him.
the next time a guy calls morris pretty, he’s being entirely genuine, eyes sparkling as he takes in morris’ features.
morris scoffs. “gonna have to try harder’n that, ‘f’you wanna make fun a’ me.”
“what’re you talkin’ about? you ain’t got a mirror? you got a face right out of a movie.”
(I will never actually be mad at you for putting things here)
*
Jojo was beaming at Morris, though it was slowly falling as the other looked... almost hurt. "You got a face right out the films. I ain't makin' fun."
Morris scowled, curling up tighter on Miss Medda's couch. "You ain't gonna get me that easy. I ain't gonna let you."
Jojo's brows furrowed. "Wha'dya mean?"
"You ain't trickin' me," Morris mumbled, pulling his blankie tighter to his chest.
"I'm not," Jojo agreed, sitting on the floor by Morris's head. "I'm being absolutely serious."
He looked around for Oscar, not wanting to be trashed by the older Delancey for talking to his little brother. He seemed to be outside, with most everyone else, enjoying the nice weather after the winter freeze.
"You ain't... You jus' like Martin..." Morris shook his head. "I ain't gon' let you do tha'."
"Martin?" Jojo asked softly, brows furrowing further. "Who's Martin?"
Morris pressed his lips together, shaking his head. "Don' matt'a."
"If he did something to you, then it matters. We can help keep you safe."
He shook his head again, harder this time. "Nuh-uh."
"No?" Jojo asked him quietly. "Why not?"
"Not s'posed to talk 'bout it," Morris mumbled, looking around, probably for Oscar.
"It's okay, Morris. You don't have to talk about it. Just..." Jojo tried to figure out how to word it without Morris getting upset. "Just know that I'm here if you want to, okay?"
Morris stared at him, frowning. He couldn't be serious. He wasn't being kind. He was... he was trying to get to Morris. Trying to pick his brain and mess him up. Just like Marty.
Oscar would tell him as much.
He sat up, nearly tripping over himself trying to stand. "Os!"
Jojo stood as well, sighing softly, backing against the far wall.
Morris scrambled for the door, meeting Oscar at the door.
The older Delancey immediately started looking over Morris, checking him for any injuries. He glared over Morris's shoulder at Jojo, who was shrinking against the fireplace.
"What'sa matter Mo?" he asked his little brother, cupping his cheeks.
"Get'd lonely," Morris mumbled, looking around outside. "Wan'ed Os 'n mama."
"Come on out then, Momo. She's over there," Oscar pointed to the crowd around the unlit firepit.
Morris glanced back at Jojo one last time before taking Oscar by the hand and making his way over to Medda.
No one else would do that again. He wasn't gonna disappoint Os again.
Ever.

April Foollishness : Yellowbeard
Tumblr media
So in the 80's there were a few Python adjacent projects ,this was Graham Chapmans, a parody of pirate films and its brimming with comedy talent :Written by Chapman and Peter Cook, music by John Morris and a cast including Chapman,Cook,Eric Idle ,John Cleese,Madeline Khan ,MArty Feldman ,Peter Boyle ,Kenneth Mars,Cheech & Chong .....and legendary actor JAMES MASON!!! Now this film should be comedy classic......Why have I barely heard of it though?.....
In this 1983 film After 20 years in prision Captain Yellowbeard (Graham Chapman) is forced to team up with his son Dan (MArtin Hewitt) who has the map to his buried treasure tatooed on his head
OK this film starts off on a good note ,like I said the cast is amazing and most of them are pretty great :Madeline Khan gets som laughs as Yellowbeards wife ,Eric Idle is solid as a secret serviceman ,Peter Boyle is a good antagonistic pirate and its fun to see him and Marty Feldman as a duo(Also this is Marty Feldmans final role ,as he died during production) ,John Cleese as a blind informant is pretty funny ,and by GOD Peter Cook is the funniest thing in this movie as this old aristocrat /surrogate father to Dan ,he barely has to move but the way he carries himself makes him so funny.I also was pleasently surprised by Graham Chapman,I thought id find him iritating but watching the film reminded me "Oh yeah Chapman was a legit great and underrated comedic actor " and he really sells this unpleasent ,insane monstrus pirate ,hes pretty good here .Honestly I was laughing for a good half hour......Then the rest of the film just SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKKKKKKS
I dunno what happens but this went from a pretyy funny movie to garbage as soon as the heroes are forced to join a naval vessel captained by James Mason,(In perhaps his worst performance ,I love James Mason, one of my fave actors ,but he does not look like he wants to be in the film and he isnt even allowed to be funny )Thats also when Yellowbeard kind of dips out of the movie for a bit ,and for movie called Yellowbeard he isnt in it alot .Now to be fair maybe they thought too much Yellowbeard would be exhausting but unfortunately our other lead is Dan who is .....Dull as dishwater. They dont do anything with the fact Dans a thinker or anything substantial with the father son bond .I also think the film suffers from having too many antagonists when Peter Boyle was enough ,and one of the villains is Tommy Chong who.....Is just so miscast as a baddie (Cheech Marin as his assistant however is brillaint ).Theres a love story that comes out of the blue and goes nowhere. My other very big complaint is.....Theres like 10 r*pe jokes ,like more then I expected and they are uncomfortable
Overall, the first half hour works .......But then it keeps going and it doesnt work

would love your country music recs!! been trying to get into the genre but haven’t really listened to a whole bunch and would love some suggestions <33
YAY thnk u for reaching out. um most of these artists i havent trawled their entire discog but each has some things i really really love. many of them explore serious topics such as addiction, discrimination (racism, homophobia, sexism, classism, etc), and more (like a lot of less commercialized and more traditional country music does).
its important to note that there is a lot of crossover in country, soul, blues, americana, and folk, so some artists might be more leaning to one of the other genres but their relation to the country style compels me to include them.
i will also say that afaik these are mostly modern artists because nothing makes me fucking angrier than people saying that new country music isnt good. please pull yourself out of the country billboard top 100 for the love of god.
ok here it is: > yola (one of my faves, lots of crossover with soul in her style) > brandi carlile, maren morris, natalie hemby, and amanda shires are all good individually and are part of a collective called the highwomen (theyve collaborated with yola several times!) > robert finley (i could cry with how much i love his work, sharecropper's son 2021 is just fucking. perfect) > john fullbright > rhiannon giddens > gillian welch > shakey graves > charley crockett (his work all feels so fresh and unique to me, i never get sick of it) > courtney marie andrews > brown bird (one half of this duo has passed on so they havent made any new music since then, but i still suggest checking them out) > mary gauthier (drag queens in limousines is a total classic) > the war and treaty > sturgill simpson > allison russell > paul cauthen (he's collabed with orville peck, who im sure a lot of people here know! if not i rec him too ofc) > emily nenni > john r miller > lucette (shes had work produced by sturgill simpson iirc) > the secret sisters (very dear to me) > katie pruitt > shovels & rope (<3) > parker millsap > margo price ( i love her i love her i love her i love her what can i say. thats how rumors get started 2020 changed my life) > kaia kater > robert ellis (less familiar w him but i like what ive heard) > jaime wyatt > arlo mckinley (another artist i havent checked out extensively but ive heard good songs from him and like his voice) > the chicks (forever and ever <333333333) > amythyst kiah > mercy bell > justin townes earle (who has unfortunately passed away in recent years, i think 2020) > waylon payne > the devil makes three > evil > jason isbell and the 400 unit
i also dont want you to think i dont want people to listen to classics, i do. i love classic country music — if you havent checked them out, id especially recommend john denver, charley pride, dolly parton, willie nelson, hank williams, johnny cash, the carter family, glen campbell, kitty wells, robert johnson (hes blues, but hes mississipean blues and has influenced country music through and through), patsy cline, judy collins, waylon jennings, and marty robbins.
this isnt comprehensive but its what comes to mind right now. i hope it was helpful!!! <3

Hey, I'm a huge fan of thinking of Crutchie as Jewish. But do you have a citation for the historical Crutch Morris being Jewish. Or are you basing this on Marty Belafsky?
Based on history! We don’t have one exacting citation, but a common hypothesis based on the pieces of citable information we do have.
The most conclusive simply being the fact that the overwhelming majority of people named Morris, a very Jewish name originating from Moshe, are themselves; especially given the time and place in history, when 40% of newsies who answered the 1901 NYC census were Jewish and there weren’t abundant legal or marital ways for a man’s name to be changed in the usa like there are today. Could this have been a false name like Jack Kelly or Blink? Of course, (though I doubt he would have recorded a false name when he was an elected official of the newsboy union) so, as with all other information, this has to be taken with a grain of salt.
We also have one photograph that is commonly associated to be Crutch Morris that many past historians have made the presumption from:
[im going to edit this to add the picture give me a few minutes sorry]
Tumblr media
This photo is commonly MIS-ASSOCIATED with Louis Hines’ work documenting New York’s working children in the 1930s. THIS IS INCORRECT. It appears nowhere in his published work. So much as a reverse image search tells us this is actually an undated photograph from the New York Historical Society Archive. @newsieshistory (their presence here is greatly missed) was able to match up the windows in the background to those on the Duane Street Newsboy Lodging House (the actual lodge house the one in the film is based on, where Kid Blink, Crutch Morris, Dutch[y] Johnson, [Swifty] the Rake, Bumlets, Snoddy, Pie Eater, Snipeshooter, among others really lived according to both articles on the strike and nyc census records), while it was operating as a newsboy lodge house, sometime c. 1890-1920. This could be another newsie that lived there during those years meeting the description of Crutch from the rally article, but its as close to a known photo as exists.
I am certain there is more, but I’m currently in the process of moving my historical documents out of google drive to fight the ai so I do not currently have access to my archive, I will attempt to add more tomorrow.

could we get lore for professor callenbach? what's his deal?
I’ve been meaning to introduce this guy, here you are
Tumblr media
Professor Alexander Callenbach.
Lore: Initially an engineering teacher at a local university, Prof. Callenbach’s life changed when his experimental radio started picking up strange broadcasts from unknown sources. Piecing together a rudimentary theory surrounding these messages, Callenbach managed to discover a possible source: a mysterious central figure known simply as the ‘MC’.
After increasing references to UFOlogy and paranormal phenomena began cropping up in his class lectures, Callenbach was eventually ‘forcibly retired’, and became more and more secluded.
Convinced he was the only person who understood and cared about these possible threats to humanity, he threw himself headfirst into his preparation for various unnatural disasters, finding comfort in one particular radio show along the way…
In his early to mid sixties, but still fairly physically fit
His dismissal from his university position was a decision made purely by the higher ups: his students generally considered him a helpful and engaging (if somewhat eccentric) professor and were sad to see him go.
His equipment kit consists of a modified portable radio and a touch-tone telephone capable of sending and receiving signals over surprisingly long distances, as well as (in theory) beyond the boundaries of our universe. Design-wise, it’s partially based on the TF2 medic’s medigun pack (a lot of my scientist characters take inspiration from the medic, actually…) and the infamous Power Glove (its so bad).
His equipment has a rudimentary form of artificial intelligence- he affectionately refers to it as ‘Toni’.
Drives an old red Chevy pickup truck that he usually uses to cart around his heavier equipment.
Retains his professorial demeanour and comes off surprisingly approachable and sensible (until he starts talking about ancient aliens, of course)
He attempts to control his extreme paranoia by being prepared for every eventuality (though is a little too much of an ‘absent-minded professor’ to do so effectively.)
Accomplished violin player (if only in his spare time)
Was probably involved in early Kirk/Spock fan fiction
Deeply admires (read: has a massive crush on) the host of Enigmatic Enigmas of Esoteric Enigmas, a radio show that only seems to broadcast on AM frequency and showcases various purported conspiracy theories, mysteries and supernatural occurrences. Callenbach eventually manages to work up the courage to call in (or rather, actually speak instead of breathing into the receiver) but he can never quite explain himself properly. The host, Morris Hammond, is quite patient with him, all things considered (possibly because he’s his only caller).
Develops an intergenerational friendship with Dylan Livwright, playing the Doc. Brown to his Marty McFly.
Is aware of numerous other supernatural characters and events, especially the Ant Folk, Cabinet Man and Sweet Bod.
Excellent with engineering, terrible with technology.
General appearance was probably unconsciously based on the titular character from Professor Fizwizzle, the first game little me ever encountered that let you make your own levels- what fun!

Voice For Children Signed "Cartoon Jam" Print (Stabur Graphics, 1986)
“This panoramic print features perhaps the largest number of cartoon licenses granted for one project, as well as what might be the most cartoonists participating in one cartoon jam for a commercial print. The scene also features the first licensed appearances of Walt Disney and Walter Lantz characters co-starring in the same piece. It's a veritable ‘orchestra and choir’ of characters singing for the welfare of children as the ‘Voice For Children.’
“Signed by: Stan Lee, Charles Schulz, Walter Lantz, Jim Davis, Johnny Romita, Milton Caniff, Mort Drucker, Jack Kirby, Bill Keane, Mike Royer, Moebius, Sergio Aragones, Hank Ketcham, Kelly Freas, Bob Thaves, Jim Unger, Jack Hannah, Don Dougherty, Jerry Van Amerongen, Leonard Starr, Arnold Roth, Tom Batiuk, Mike Peters, Harvey Kurtzman, Al Jaffee, Morrie Turner, Mel Lazarus, B. Peter Boyle and Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein (Mel Brooks, 1974)
Cast: Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman, Madeline Kahn, Cloris Leachman, Teri Garr, Kenneth Mars, Richard Haydn, Gene Hackman. Screenplay: Gene Wilder, Mel Brooks. Cinematography: Gerald Hirschfeld. Production design: Dale Hennesy. Film editing: John C. Howard. Music: John Morris.
A blissful comedy, laden with wonderful musical moments like the great "Puttin' on the Ritz" number and Madeline Kahn bursting into an orgasm-induced rendition of "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life" as Jeanette MacDonald never sang it. But the score by John Morris is great on its own, as in the serenade to the monster on violin and horn played by Frederick (Gene Wilder) and Igor (Marty Feldman). And even the gag references sing: Frederick's appropriation of Mack Gordon's lyrics to "Chattanooga Choo Choo" when he arrives at the Transylvania (get it?) Station, or the supposedly virginal Elizabeth (Kahn) singing "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." It's also surprising how little really smutty humor Brooks indulges in this time. There's Inga's (Teri Garr) appreciation of the monster's "enormous schwanzstucker," to be sure, but this is PG humor at worst. So many of the gags are just wittily anti-climactic, like Frau Blucher (Cloris Leachman) proclaiming that Victor Frankenstein "vas my ... boyfriend!" Or the Blind Man (Gene Hackman) wistfully calling out to the fleeing monster, "I was gonna make espresso." (Hackman ad-libbed this line, and many other gags in the film, such as Igor's peripatetic hump, were improvised by the actors.) Has a spoof ever been so beautifully staged? The production design is by Dale Hennesy, who had the wit to track down and borrow the original sparking and buzzing laboratory equipment that Kenneth Strickfaden created for the first Frankenstein (James Whale, 1931). The equally evocative black-and-white cinematography is by Gerald Hirschfeld.
