The Return of ASSSSCAT at the UCB Theatre - 09/01/23
Featuring D'Arcy Carden, Lisa Gilroy, Mary Holland, Brandon Scott Jones, Lauren Lapkus, Oscar Montoya, Ego Nwodim, and Carl Tart with guest monologist Will Ferrell.
Given the opportunity to participate in a life or death reality game show, one man discovers there's a lot to live for.
Starts out strong, with a lot of pleasant absurdity. It's frantic enough that even though you kind of know that the "game" isn't real, it still leaves the door open enough that you can't be entirely sure. And with the entrance of Kendrick's Maddy I was hoping that this would continue and that she and Johnson would try to "win" the game together in some kind of spectacular fashion.
But unfortunately she disappears unexpectedly early. And under circumstances that removes the possibility that the game can be real. Tommy's inabilitiy to realise that puts more focus on his mental health. It makes the story more serious and leads to a more traditional "message" movie. Still an overall enjoyable watch.
Johnson surely elevates his own, fairly mild material about the dangers of complacency to make Self Reliance worth watching for his trademark brand of charming comedic chaos. He shows heart and a talent for direction with his ability to focus down on characters and performance. His film is often hilarious and ridiculous with audiences able to believe the absurdity of his oddball desperation as a loser looking for a way out of his sad sack rut.
Premiered at the 2023 South by Southwest Film & TV Festival (Austin) as part of the Narrative Spotlight section.
RSV - Mary Holland - ‘What an irony that there is a vaccine created for a "vaccine created disease.’
In light of RSV making recent headlines, it’s important to note that the disease arose only in 1956 + is attributed to an artifact of research on polio vaccines
In the episode A Woman First, Shawnee refuses to marry her boyfriend until he gets circumcised for her, both because she's Jewish and because she thinks foreskin smells like "donkey pussy." He gets it done, but she dumps him before he even finishes recovering.
This is such a nice movie, seriously. I must admit I thought it would be funnier, but it made up for that by making me cry way more than I expected. Also, that cast...just wow. They put together some of the best actors in the industry in one single film, and that alone makes it worth a watch. The characters feel real and lived in, and the movie perfectly captures the chaotic experience of families coming together for Christmas. It has cliches and stuff, of course, but that's exactly what it wants, cause the LGBTQ community also deserves its own Christmas movies. In fact, it's actually better made and told than most of the genre. I hope we keep getting films like Happiest Season, cause watching it was such a joy.
