GIUSEPPE VERDI - (Raffaello Matarazzo, 1953)
"Year 1901, Milan, Italy; a huge people crowds the "La Scala" theatre where the opera "Otello" is staged when, a sad, unexpected news arrives: Verdi is dying. Suddenly the theatre's director suspends the entertainment; lying in his deathbed the great composer relives, step by steps, the evenements of his sentimental and artistic life...".The movie (a fine, very good movie) records the meeting between the sung melodrama (Verdi) and the "populist neo-realism" (Matarazzo), a genre of which the lyric opera is the primary source."Giuseppe Verdi" is (imo) the best of the Verdi's biographies ever filmed, a story that serves as the testament/manifesto of the most popular among the Italian directors of the 1950s, and the other face of the historic melodrama compared to the glories of the aristocratic and someway "mythological" re-interpretation of the Italian Risorgimento Visconti made in his "Senso" (1954). A basilar, not-to-be-missed movie for everyone who desires to know the nineteenth-century cultural heritage of the Italian cinema and its visible presence in the movies of the crucial decade of the 1950s. And, under a stylistic pov, I only consider how Matarazzo succeeds in making real entertainment through a humble, but effective, courageous simplicity.

Hear me out on this one, Eddie Munson is about to have his moment. Look at the way everyone is looking at him, intently listening to what he has to say, I don't know what's going on here, but I do know that this is most likely going to be a confidence-boosting moment for Eddie where he gets to shine.
