I came across some concept art for the shuttle craft in the Original Series of Star Trek my Matt Jefferies.
Goddamn, they really look like Flash Gordon rockets. Makes a lot of sense considering the age of some of the sci fi writers that grew up with it - and - the aeronautical designs of the experimental sound-barrier breaking rocket planes of the 50's. And the man himself was, famously, an aircraft engineer as well - having done the designs for the original Enterprise, and much more.

Ah yes, the repurposed Galactic Cruiser Leif Ericson model, with a new nose cone and constructed of glow-in-the-dark parts!
Designed by Matt Jefferies, the man who designed the original U.S.S. Enterprise, the Leif Ericson was part of AMT initial Star Trek line in the late 1960s. However, it had poor sales and was discontinued.
When the line was revamped and re-issued in the mid-1970s, AMT made the above-mentioned changes to the kit to take advantage of the UFO craze that was sweeping the nation at the time.
I loved this kit! It was super-easy to assemble, and the little duck billed scout craft was really neat. I proudly hung it from the ceiling over my bed, but the brother I shared a bedroom with didn't like it. In fact, the glow-in-the-dark feature scared him witless (not that he had many wits to begin with).
So, one day while I was at school, he decided to remove the model from the ceiling the only way he knew how: with a whiffleball bat. When I returned home, I found the irreparably shattered pieces of the model scattered all over my bed.
But did he get in trouble? Heck no! Me sainted mum told me it was my fault for hanging something scary from the ceiling in the first place. Par for the course in my house where, no matter the situation, the oldest kid (me) was always to blame for anything that happened.

i love ‘jefferies tubes’ as a piece of star trek canon... like i just think the most satisfying trek honor would be to have a commonly used piece of starship design named after you and for it to sound like a real thing

A very nice painted first edition Leif Ericson Galactic Cruiser starship model, with the scout ship visible in the open shuttle bay.
This model was designed by Matt Jefferies, the man who designed the USS Enterprise for Star Trek.
