I feel like if you injure another player to the point where they can’t play due to a broken bone or concussion then maybe just maybe you should be suspended or something. Like I feel like having a player safety department that doesn’t do shit when players are injured is kind of a problem???

With all of this reveal about Matthew's fractured sternum and how he still played I've been wondering how Caroline would react to it. Would she let him play? Stand her ground and tell him not to? Would she try to get him to sit out? I miss the WLTAY universe so much! I've reread it already since playoffs started. I hope to see more bonus chapters if you're still wanting to write them!
so, for wltay-verse sake– let's pretend that this situation took place later on down the line ((lets say its the era w both ethan is 13 and scarlett is 2 and care tech is prego w payson but they don't know it yet)) so ethan and scar are the only kids and it's the 2028-2029 season, bc obvi the story takes place during the 2023-2024 szn<3333
BUT OHHHH 100% care would not be for him playing!!!!
obvi its important to know that care is v much well aware matt is a grown man and can make his own decisions, but she is also not afraid to voice her opinions as well when it comes to suggesting what he should do about the injury bc yk obviously she knows there’s chances of injuries w hockey, so when he gets injured and has to get checked out, she’s not too worried, but the moment it was discovered just how serious his injury was ((bc HELLO a fractured sternum!!!!!)) she would immediately be on the side of caution and tell him maybe he should sit out.
like when they're back at home and the kids are all in bed and yk he played it cool w ethan and scarlett so it didn't worry them, but when it's just him and care, she's sitting there in bed watching him kind of slowly get into bed and she's all "okay, tell me what they really said" bc she knows obvi he played it safe for the kids.
and he tells her that yk "they said i probably fractured my sternum" and she's all "probably?" bc is sus of how he said it and she knows they took him to the hospital after they saw him after the game ((aka he told ethan he just had to yk do some press stuff so he wouldn't worry)) and yk he finished getting into bed and he's all "okay, so i fractured my sternum." and yk care's all just in shock and concerned obviously and he kinda cuts it off w a "they think it happened when i hit the ice after that hit from kolesar. but i'm fine, i promise–"
and ma'am is all like "fine?! matthew you're walking like you're 70 and in need of a double hip replacement," and she kind of motions at him all "you can barely breathe without looking like you're in pain."
"it's fine, care. they gave me some 800 ibuprofen for tonight, and i should be better in the morning."
OFC this is an answer that ms caroline tkachuk DOES NOT appreciate bc she follows up w a "its a broken bone, matthew. ibuprofen doesnt fix a broken bone. you can't play like this."
to which matt's obviously all up in arms bc "it's the stanley cup finals, care! it's at most three more games of my life. who knows when it'll happen again?"
"it happened before, matthew. five season ago–"
"exactly, care! five seasons! it took me five seasons to get to another stanley cup!"
and yk they're not exactly fighting, but it's not calm either yk?? and care's not trying to parent him or keep him from his dream, but she also knows he's in full on hockey tough guy mode and will do anything without letting something stop him from reaching the stanley cup again yk???
so not wanting to fight anymore, she says "fine, we'll see how you feel in the morning," and they go to sleep.
so obvi it's next morning, matt gets up for morning skate when care's up w scar and he gets back by the time everyone is awake and yk he's still trying to play it cool but its considerably hard for him since he woke up more sore this morning. and when its time to wake him up from post game nap to eat yk, ethan asks if him and scar can go do it ((and since fam is in town, we'll keep it true and say brady was staying over and helped matt out of bed)) but care says "yk what, let's let beebee do it and you guys can help me set up dad's plate"
so brady goes up and care doesn't really hear a lot of movement upstairs, so she tells ethan to watch scarlett and she'll be right back– so she goes upstairs and actively sees brady trying to help matt stand up out of their bed and ma'am immediately is like "absolutely not, you're not playing tonight"
and matt's all "care, i was just laying down too long" ((while he's yk, still pushing through trying to breathe normally))
"that's bullshit and you know it matthew. look me in my face and tell me that brady didn't have to help you sit up in bed, that it doesn't hurt you to breathe or that you can stand yourself up right now. if you can do that and wholeheartedly believe it's the truth, then i'll drop it."
and yk mans already knows she's going to see through him, but he still tries to play it tough and yk kinda moves brady aside and prepares to push himself out of bed. he does it but obvi it's super shaky at first and brady and caroline are kinda standing closeby in case he falls and he stands himself up but is kinda out of breath and hurting when he's standing there and he's all "i'm telling them im playing tonight, care. i can't let this opportunity pass me up, who knows how many good years i have left." ((cue the male dramatics lmfao))
in true caroline fashion, ma'am is not thrilled and is all "i don't think you understand how serious this injury is matthew. you play tonight and take another bad hit or bad fall and you could further hurt yourself matthew and your career could be over. are you ready to even think about that possibility at 31???"
and ofc matthew's all "i'll be fine, care. i've been playing this game a long time, i can still play tough and be safe."
SO PULLING THE MOM CARD, CARE'S ALL "would you let ethan do it??"
"that's not fair."
"of course its fair. if ethan had the very same injury as you and you, as the adult knew the repercussions of what would happen if he played, would you let him play?"
POOR BRADY IS JUST STANDING THERE LIKE 👁👄👁 "maybe we should just let him go see the trainers–"
and care's all "shut it brady" and turns to matthew like "well, would you? would you let your son risk his life and career for three games?"
so they just kind of stand there staring at each other and matt's finally like "no," and before care can say anything he adds on a "but i'm not ethan."
to which care adds a "but you are to your mom and dad"
ANYWHO ITS LIKE ARUING W A BRICK WALL AND CARE KNOWS THAT ITS NOT GETTING ANYWHERE SO SHE JUST HUFFS AND IS ALL LIKE "fine, if you want to play tonight matthew, then do it."
and yk they go on w the day and matthew plays game four ((much to caroline's dismay)) and ofc she and the kids go to the game and yk care is v much not thrilled about him playing and everytime hes on the ice she's panicked and at the end of the night when they're home and getting ready for bed there might be a slight silence between them bc obvi she's pissed but yk they do the kids nighttime routine and then go to their room
but she helps him shower ((bc showering after the game was too painful)) and get ready for bed and she's helping him into bed and once he's comfy and she makes sure hes got everything he needs, she gets on her side and even her just getting into the bed kind of moves him and obvi that hurts and so she's just worried the whole time and when they're settling down into bed matt kind of moves his arm out to her so he can hold her hand and she does
and he's all "you were right, i shouldn't have played tonight. some of the guys had to help me get my gear on and i should've known that was a sign for me not to play...but care, it's–"
"i know...it's the stanley cup finals. and im sorry if it seemed like i was dismissing you, but matthew...this is a v scary and serious injury." and she kinda hears him yk trying not to breathe too hard or anything bc yk pain and she's like "hurt?"
"like hell," and she can see hes super emotional bc they both kind of know that that was most likely his last game of the season bc of how much pain hes in and so shes just being super comforting w him and soft night yk

I had a bad feeling about this dude that hurt Matt since the oilers series I hate it
was kolesar pulling shit in the oilers series too I don't even remember. it feels like 2 full years have passed since our boys got brutally killed and murdered and a number of v*gas players were being annoying during those games. I'll take your word for it though, anonymous strangers on the internet with vague bad feelings are always a trustworthy source

Mallards Fry Walleye in Close Game
MOLINE, IL – The Quad City Mallards completed a three games in three days stretch on Sunday, their final opponent in less than 48 hours being the Toledo Walleye. Both teams had traveled five hours overnight from their last game, Toledo coming from Kalamazoo and the Mallards from Fort Wayne. It’s possible the two teams’ buses met upon I-80, as the fastest routes to Moline from the respective departure points converge in Gary, IN. Neither team could be described as tired-looking, however, as they both played with aggression and finesse.
The Mallards looked surprisingly energetic for competing in their fourth game in five days, having faced the Kalamazoo Wings in Kalamazoo on Wednesday. Their passing was on target, as was Toledo’s, suggesting perhaps that the bus movie most recently showcased was Mighty Ducks. Kevin Gibson made his return to the home of the Mallards after being sent to the Rapid City Rush on June 14th to complete the trade that had sent Mike Monfredo to the Rush in exchange for Josh MacDonald. Gibson was then dealt to Toledo during the off-season, but elected to begin the season with the Milton Keynes Lightning of the EIHL. That stint overseas lasted 11 games before he returned to the States.
It didn’t take long for the scoring to begin, Tristan King lighting the lamp with help from Alex Globke and Matt Pohlkamp roughly five and a half minutes into the opening frame. Pohlkamp was in the right trapezoid behind Matej Machovsky when he passed to Globke, who was at the inside middle edge of the right circle. Globke then fired the puck towards the goalie, but Machovsky was in the way of the net. King grabbed the rebound, shooting in from the left side. According to the grand video wall at the TaxSlayer Center and its shot counter, it was the first shot of the game. A few minutes later the counter was fixed, and it was in actuality the sixth shot for the Mallards that found its way to the back of the net.
The Mallards then took a 2-0 lead shortly after the shot counter was fixed when Keegan Kolesar had a brilliant deflection tickle twine. Gergo Nagy passed from the left trapezoid, using the boards to bounce the puck once to Greg Amlong. Amlong then sent a slap shot from the blue line infront of the penalty boxes, and Kolesar redirected the puck past the Czech from a little up and to the left of the crease. The Walleye did not answer back until a little over halfway into the game, though they led in shots on goal through the first period.
Austen Brassard ended C.J. Motte’s shutout bid after grabbing the rebound fired in by Gibson. There was a gaping net to Motte’s left, and Brassard capitalized on it. Erik Bradford also earned an assist on that marker. Two minutes later Toledo struck again, this time while on the man-advantage. Ryan McGrath had been sitting in the sin bin for all of 23 seconds when A.J. Jenks sent in a rebound on Motte’s left from the corner of the crease. Bradford had taken the original shot on net from the blue line, Shane Berschbach making his way onto the scoresheet with an apple.
The Mallards doubled up the score within six minutes of the final frame starting, first Brayden Low and then Jake Bolton scoring. Just over a minute into the third period, Jamie Tardif and MacGrath went streaking up the boards on opposite sides of the ice, Tardif on the left and McGrath on the right. The two passed the puck back and forth a few times before Tardif attempted a shot on goal from the left crease corner. His shot rang off the post, but Low was there to stuff in the garbage and break the tie. Bolton’s goal proved that his head really was in the game, as he managed to slide the puck in through the five-hole from the blue line. The puck bounced off of Machovsky’s thigh on the way into the net, perhaps that bounce being the one that led it to the twine.
Toledo attempted a comeback with a goal in the last two minutes of the contest, but it was not to be. Machovsky had gone to the bench to give Toledo the extra attacker with about 80 seconds remaining in the game, and roughly ten seconds later Bradford went top-shelf. Davis Vandane and Mike Embach were credited with the assists.
The Mallards will go on a road trip on I-74 this weekend, as they will take on the Indy Fuel on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Puck drop is set for 6 CST on Thursday and 6:30 CST on Friday and Saturday.

Indianapolis Runs Over Mallards
MOLINE, IL – The Quad City Mallards were seeking their fifth straight win on Friday when the Indy Fuel came to town, donning hot pink sweaters for Pink in the Rink. Pink in the Rink is a part of the Hockey Fights Cancer initiative, vowing to fight back against cancer and remember those who had lost their battle and those who had won. As part of Pink in the Rink, fans were invited to paint names on the ice in pink paint for the skaters to skate over on Friday and Saturday. The sweaters will then be auctioned after the game on Saturday, with proceeds going to the Genesis Health Systems Foundation. The Mallards will have to start a new streak on Saturday, as the Fuel weren’t fans of the pink sweaters.
The Mallards suffered bad bounces the entire game, finding the wrong side of the iron or the puck deflecting away from the net off a screening stick rather than towards. The Mallards played well, but the Fuel and Tomkins had the bounces and played better.
The beginning of the game saw lots of back and forth action between the two teams, neither one having possession for very long. A little less than four minutes into the game, Jack Burton took a slashing call to prevent the puck going past recently returned from the Rockford IceHogs Matt Tomkins.  There was a scramble in front of Tomkins, the puck bouncing off his pads and his stick and other players sticks as he was down in the butterfly, giving the Mallards a good opportunity to get on the scoreboard first. Burton’s penalty caused a whistle to stop play, breaking up the momentum the Mallards had gained.
A few minutes later Tristan King juggled the puck one too many times while streaking down the ice on Tomkins’ left, being unable to get a shot off from the corner of the crease. Josh Shalla gave the Fuel the first goal of the game just over 12 minutes into the opening frame when he, Ryan Rupert, and Matt Rupert were in on a three-on-two. The puck traveled from right to left of C.J. Motte, Motte sprawling to try to make the save. The puck sailed in over his left shoulder after Shalla sent a one-timer in, and the officials had to discuss before signaling that it was indeed a good goal.
Darian Dziurzynski had an uncontested breakaway early in the second period, but Motte stone-walled him to keep the game to a single goal. A goalie’s favorite sound – the puck hitting iron – echoed throughout the second period as the Mallards were unable to hit the inside of the posts. Matt Pohlkamp, who had drawn iron in the second period, was able to put the Mallards on the board at just over the four minute mark of the final frame. Pohlkamp picked up the rebound that came off the end boards, sending the puck in to meet twine. Triston Grant and Keegan Kolesar were credited with the apples on what would prove to be the lone tally for the Mallards.
Nineteen seconds after Pohlkamp’s marker, Matt Rupert fired in a shot to beat Motte on the left side. His brother had sent the puck in from the blue line to Motte’s right, Shalla picking up the secondary assist on the game winning goal. The game was not over, however, as eight minutes later the Fuel scored off a faceoff to insure a victory – provided the Mallards didn’t mount a comeback. The faceoff was to Motte’s right, and after Indy won the faceoff the puck was bouncing around every which way but out of the zone. Motte went down to cover it but it took a bounce differently, instead bouncing to Stephen Collins. Collins couldn’t ignore the gaping net, and his goal was assisted by Dziurzynski and Michael Neal. The Fuel then capitalized on their second power play of the game, cementing the win with a goal by Ryan Rupert. Rupert sent a rocket in over Motte’s shoulder after getting the puck from Anthony Cortese, and that was how the game ended.
Tomkins showed why he was with Rockford until Friday morning, turning away 45 of 46 shots. The bounces went Tomkins’ way as well, which is something a goaltender will never complain about. Motte faced 33 shots.
The Mallards will try to start a new winning streak on Saturday when they complete the Pink in the Rink weekend against the Fort Wayne Komets. Puck drop is set for 7:05 CST, and don’t forget to stick around after the game to bid on the one-of-a-kind hot pink Mallards sweaters. The Mallards are also offering discount codes to use on TicketMaster for Saturday's game; $5 of every ticket sold using the codes found on their Facebook page.

Flash Goals Doom Thunder
MOLINE, IL – The Quad City Mallards have been body-snatched, but none of the fans will complain. The other teams in the ECHL might, however, as the Mallards are now playing like a first place team rather than the basement-dwellers of recent weeks. The night after a 6-2 victory against the Kalamazoo Wings, the Mallards defeated the Wichita Thunder 5-3 with some rapid fire goals.
Things started out a bit rough for the Mallards, Tristan King having to sit for a four minute high-sticking call just under 90 seconds into the game. The penalty-kill unit was strong, however, and kept the visitors off the board the entire duration. Twenty-five seconds after the penalty was over, Brayden Low opened the scoring, Jamie Tardif passing from behind the net on Joel Rumpel’s right to Low between the dots. Travis Armstrong also picked up an assist on the marker, and it would not be the last time those three would appear on the score sheet. Before the goal could even be announced, Alexander Kuqali psyched Rumpel out to send him sprawling on his stomach to leave a gaping net. Kuqali found twine from the left dot, Tardif passing from the blue-line to him, Low picking an apple. King then capitalized on a scramble infront of the net 27 seconds later, Ryan McGrath and Keegan Kolesar also having touched the puck to earn them assists.
The Mallards dominated possession in the first period, playing like they wanted to affect the play-offs even if they couldn’t play in them. The team was finishing checks and passing crisply, something apparently having sparked in them before Wednesday’s game that has carried over through the weekend.
The Mallards went onto the power-play just 37 seconds into the middle frame, and with one second remaining in the man advantage potted a goal. King passed from the left boards to Willie Raskob at the right boards to Matt Pohlkamp at the right dot, Pohlkamp sending it in. Wichita then answered back shortly after, Kevin Dufour reaching around Ivan Kulbakov’s right pad from the left to end the shut-out. Kevin Patterson and Nick Latta were credited with the assists on Dufour’s marker. Pohlkamp scored again to put himself on hat-trick watch, and also chased Rumpel from between the pipes. Pohlkamp was on the goal line to Rumpel’s right when he shot it in, Raskob and Chris Izmirlian helping. Rumpel made 19 saves on 24 shots before being replaced by Shane Starrett. Starrett was freshly returned from the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL, where he had started in his first AHL game on Friday. On Friday against the Iowa Wild he made 10 saves on 14 shots, but he would prove to be a perfect seven-for-seven on Saturday.
In the latter half of the second period the Mallards began to look gassed, but they continued in their winning ways. Armstrong decided he didn’t like someone’s face and earned an interference call when the opposing player went into the boards without Armstrong there to dampen the impact. The Wichita skaters on the ice all wanted a piece of the 6’4” defenseman, but Armstrong squared up with Guillaume Lepine. Lepine dropped his gloves, and after only a few punches exchanged Armstrong dropped Lepine with a body slam. Armstrong had earned two minutes for interference before the fight, making King keep him company in the sin bin.
A few minutes after the fight Wichita struck again, Dufour beating Kulbakov coast to coast. Ralph Cuddemi passed from the right dot to Dufour at the left corner of the crease, Kulbakov unable to slide over fast enough to track the rocket shot. Two minutes later Jeremy Beaudry added to Wichita’s total with help from Shaquille Merasty and Cuddemi. Cuddemi passed from just inside the blue-line on the right to Merasty at the left corner of the crease. Merasty sent a slap shot Kulbakov’s way, but the goalie blocked the shot. The rebound went directly to Beaudry at the right crease corner, and Beaudry scored on the gaping net.
The Mallards return to the ice on Tuesday to finish the game against the Tulsa Oilers that was began on November 17. The game was postponed midway through the second period after health issues with Tulsa’s head coach Rob Murray. Opening face-off is set for 6:35, and admission is free.

Saturday the 14th a Day of Better Luck For Mallards
MOLINE, IL – The Quad City Mallards took on the Tulsa Oilers on Saturday for a battle of the special teams. Both teams managed a short-handed tally, while one also added a power play goal. Ivan Kulbakov made his Mallards debut, facing 31 shots while Jake Hildebrand faced 26.
Once again the Mallards fell behind early, Conner Bleackley scoring unassisted while the Mallards had the man advantage. Bleackley was engaged in a board battle with Ales Sova and then streaked up the half-boards with the puck to send it in top-shelf.  During that goal Christophe Lalancette was in the sin bin for slashing. That penalty came at the most opportune time for the Mallards, as a goal was almost scored after Kulbakov came out of his crease to play the puck and a Tulsa player flew in. Kulbakov left a gaping net but the whistle blew the play dead for Lalancette’s penalty.
Five minutes after Tulsa’s opening goal Justin Kovacs had a great breakaway, streaking down the middle of the ice towards Hildebrand, but was unable to score. Two minutes later Keegan Kolesar scored his first career goal with help from Greg Amlong and Alexander Kuqali. Kuqali passed the puck along the blue-line from the half-boards to Amlong on the opposite side. Amlong then sent a slapper towards the net, which was redirected by Kolesar. With just under five minutes left in the period the Mallards scored a goal that was immediately waved off for goalie interference as Sam Warning was in the crease. Forty seconds later Hildebrand made a highlight reel save on Josh MacDonald, diving coast to coast to close the gaping net.
The Mallards still looked a bit rusty in the early parts of the first period, but as play progressed they began to look more like a well-oiled machine; the last two minutes especially the team clicked well together.
Another early goal put the Oilers up 2-1 just over two minutes into the second period. Dylan Hubbs got on the score sheet when he sent the puck in from the blue-line on Kulbakov’s left past the goalie’s right elbow. That tally was assisted by Lalancette and Dmitrii Sergeev. The Mallards answered back with a short-handed goal of their own a few minutes later when Brayden Low chipped the puck out of the Mallards’ defensive zone to Warning. Warning skated along the half-boards and sent the puck flying from the left dot in the Oilers’ zone; Tristan King had been tagged for slashing 36 seconds prior. The Mallards earned their first lead of the night two mites later off a Kovacs goal assisted by Kolesar. Hildebrand left his crease to play the puck behind the net, and while he was repositioning himself in the crease again Kolesar batted the puck from Gretzky’s office to Kovacs as the latter streaked towards the net. The lead didn’t last long, however.
Tulsa scored a power-play goal at 17:12 as MacDonald sat in the box for cross-checking. Adam Pleskach redirected the puck on the right side, Evan Richardson making the original shot after receiving the pass from Tommy Vannelli. The Mallards and their fans believed that Jamie Tardif had scored at four minutes and 11 seconds of the third period, but an early whistle had blown the play dead. A Mallard shot the puck at Hildebrand’s chest before the referee lost sight of the puck for a second as it bounced off the goalie. Tardif fired the puck into a wide open net as the whistle sounded, the lights flashing off as the goal light lit red. The officials had no conference on the call, drawing ire from many. The game remained tied until just over halfway through the final frame when Alexandre Ranger took a wild shot that managed to find its way past Kulbakov. Chris Joyaux and Bleackley were credited with the apples on that goal.
The Mallards felt a renewed sense of drive after giving up the 4-3 lead, Matt Pohlkamp tying the game two minutes later. Pohlkamp sent in a backhanded shot as he skated across the mouth of the crease from Hildebrand’s left to the right, Low and Kolesar returning to the score sheet with the assists. Twenty-three seconds later MacDonald scored the game-winning goal with help from King. MacDonald was in the low slot when he took the pass from King, King being at the left dot’s farthest and top-most edge when he passed.
Kyle Follmer had the honor of the Mallards’ first five-minute major of the season, dropping the gloves with Pleskach 30 seconds after the winning goal was scored. Pleskach leveled Alex Globke in the Mallards’ defensive zone just past the left dot; Follmer took exception to the hit as you do, and after the whistle for Pleskach’s clipping penalty began jawing at the Oiler. After shaking his gloves a few times, the two engaged in fisticuffs. While it appeared that Pleskach might have landed more blows, it was Follmer who landed on top when the fight was over.
Pohlkamp ended the game in the penalty box after sending the puck over the glass in his own zone. The Oilers’ net was empty during this time, bringing their advantage to 6-on-4 for the last 42 seconds of the game.
The Mallards will finish their three game home stand on Wednesday against the Oilers. As it is a Wednesday game, the puck will drop at 6:35 CST; after Wednesday's game the Mallards will travel to the Toledo Walleye for a 6:15 CST game on Saturday.
