Double trouble! I see the ice-skate boots going in Alina’s closet for winter skating outings with Aleksander but the roller skates are all Nina Zenik!

The actual boots and accessories belonged to Queen Maud of Norway, c. 1900-1910.

What the Crows would have done during quarantine:

Kaz: asking Inej to teach him knifethrowing and help him hone his combat skills. Doing ridiculously hard puzzles, creating ridiculously hard puzzles and creating a small company that sells jigsaw puzzles and other puzzles. Reading Sherlock Holmes and C. Auguste Dupin. Starts writing his own mystery and heist novels. Paints, follows Bob Ross painting lessons.

Jesper: making TikToks of him annoying Wylan - jumping out and scaring Wylan, beginning to dance and grind on Wylan while he’s trying to do work, filming Wylan’s reactions as Jesper says weird and outrageous thing. Getting really into jewelry making and starting an Etsy store. Taking up crochet and knitting to keep his hands busy.

Inej: taking up other sports to help improve her balance and/or keep her mind busy like slack lining and archery. Also reading books about different exercise practices and philosophies. Sewing - making outfits that can fit her knives. Helping Kaz better his knife throwing skills and combat skills. Taking in stray animals and nursing them back to help - she climbs trees, getting into the hidey holes where they’re stuck and rescues them. She and Nina work together while Kaz and Matthias grumble about all of their effort but secretly love them all the more for it.

Nina: planting flower and vegetable gardens. Baking lots of bread. Joining breadtok. Making Matthias lots of different meals and desserts. Getting into papier-mâché and bookmaking. Learning more languages- useful ones and archaic and dead ones while reading Matthias stories and translating them as they sit by the fire together after dinner. Discussing uses for plants in medicine and food with Wylan and keeps saying “no, that’s poisonous!” while the other Crows egg Wylan on.

Matthias: helping Nina with her bread, being her experimental taste tester. Getting into rock climbing, bouldering, roller skating. Convincing Nina to go roller skating and ice skating and he holds her hand as he teaches her. Joining a book club and critiquing the books with a fiery passion. Trying his hand at woodworking and ice sculpting.

Wylan: lots of experimental baking. He and Nina bake together every week and make Matthias and Jesper taste their creations. Making Rube Goldberg machines and filming the end result and posting them on TikTok and getting a few million followers. Watching shows like MacGyver, The A-Team, Black Sails. Researching various plants and flora that can be used for poisonings, blowing things up.

Can you imagine those two ice skating?

It’s actually Wylan who teaches Jesper

There’s no ice rinks in Novyi Zem, he never had the chance to learn

But then they all take a trip to Fjerda, because Matthias was making some progress with the Druskelle 

And no one ever sees Matthias excited about anything, so they can’t help but follow him when he shows up with six pairs of skates and a grin on his face

Jesper stands at the edge of the pond at the beginning

Just watching Matthias, Nina and Wylan 

He’s never seen Wylan look so graceful, other than the few times he’d seen him ballroom dance with Nina

“You should join them, Jes,” Inej says, smiling up at him from where she was sitting with Kaz on a blanket 

His eyes don’t leave Wylan, even when he spins and grins at Jesper when he catches his eye

“Yeah, Jesper, come join me!” 

He wants to shake his head

Wants to say no

But then Wylan’s still smiling and he starts to skate towards where Jesper stood

His hand held out for him

“C’mon”

It was hard to hold onto his hand with their mittens, but Jesper still took the offer

Though hesitant, he stepped onto the ice

And Wylan burst out laughing when he fell right on his ass

“Not so smooth now are you, Fahey?”

“Just help me up, Merchling”

Jesper looks like a new born baby deer when he tries to move again

But Wylan makes sure not to let go of his hands

Skating backwards as he steadies Jesper

They only make it halfway across the ice before Jesper slips again

But Wylan pulls him to right him again, forcing them to stand practically chest to chest, Jesper having to look down at him from such a close distance

“I think I like this better than skating, Wylan” 

“What?”

“You holding me”

“We’re in the middle of the ice so if that was your way of getting me to take you to bed you have to know that we need to skate back first to get there”

But Jesper just shook his head

“I’d skate across this pond a million times if it meant you would hold me even for a second”

Wylan laughed, and Jesper couldn’t care less that he heard Kaz laughing too from the edge

Jesper smiled when he heard Inej tell him to be quiet

He loved being like this with Wylan

Being one of the reasons his cheeks turned rosy, he lived for it

He didn’t care if he had to be cheesy as hell to do it

However, even if his words were smooth, they were still standing on ice

Which meant, when Jesper finally braved letting go of Wylan’s hands

Bringing one up to wipe away some snowflakes that had fallen over his eyelashes 

He couldn’t even lean down to kiss him before his feet slipped right from under him

He could only lay back on the cold ground, staring up at the grey sky in  embarrassment as everyone around him howled with laughter

With ease Wylan crouched and pecked his lips, and Jesper glared up at him when his face appeared over his

“You’re still cute”

Jesper rolled his eyes

“Just get me off this death trap”
