One of the things I want to be explored more is Max's general inability to connect with people outside of her immediate circle. Not in the "I'm so socially awkward" way or even "I grew up feral" way, but in the way of Max having spent the first 14 years of her life having everyone she interacted with divided into family or enemies.

Like, this isn't even fully psychology at this point, it's neurology. When her neural pathways were at their infancy all the way up to when her prefrontal cortex was mostly developed, she had the flock that she would die for, and everyone else who wanted to hurt her. That's it. It's no fucking wonder that she felt like Dr. Martinez and Ella were practically family after three days, and that's because her brain has no reference for making friends or casual acquaintances. They were nice to her, and that means they're not enemies, and there's only one other slot in her brain for them to into. It's no wonder that she felt disjointed in Virginia's private school, even when she was trying to make friends, because she's attempting to do something that she has no frame of reference for. Of course Jeb kept wildly oscillating between "my dad who was misguided but tried his best" and "the worst person alive", because he was one of her enemies until age 10 and then immediately made a switch to her caretaker, and that only enforced the dichotomy in her head.

She cannot relate to other people outside of these two scopes. The closest she gets is the romance, and even that has the undercurrent of family because even with all her options (and she had several), she always circled back to Fang. The romance is just an extension of a dynamic that's written into her brain.

And I think there's something genuinely sad about that. How it stunts her ability to interact with other people, how it creates an inability for nuance in her mind. And, ultimately, how it's something she never learns to outgrow.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A South Carolina man was found guilty Friday of killing a Black transgender woman in the nation’s first federal trial over a hate crime based on gender identity.

After deliberating for roughly four hours, jurors convicted Daqua Lameek Ritter of a hate crime for the murder of Dime Doe in 2019. Ritter was also found guilty of using a firearm in connection with the fatal shooting and obstructing justice.

A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled. Ritter faces a maximum of life imprisonment without parole.

The four-day trial over Doe’s killing centered on the secret sexual relationship between her and Ritter, the latter of whom had grown agitated by the exposure of their affair in the small town of Allendale, according to witness testimony and text messages obtained by the FBI. Prosecutors accused Ritter of shooting Doe three times with a .22 caliber handgun to prevent further revelation of their romance.

Doe’s close friends testified that it was no secret in Allendale that she had begun her social transition as a woman shortly after graduating high school. She started dressing in skirts, getting her nails done and wearing extensions. She and her friends discussed boys they were seeing — including Ritter, whom she met during one of his many summertime visits from New York to stay with family.

But text messages obtained by the FBI suggested that Ritter sought to keep their relationship under wraps as much as possible, prosecutors said. He reminded her to delete their communications from her phone, and hundreds of texts sent in the month before her death were removed.

Shortly before Doe’s death, their exchanges grew tense. In one message from July 29, 2019, she complained that Ritter did not reciprocate her generosity. He replied that he thought they had an understanding that she didn’t need the “extra stuff.”

He also told her that Delasia Green, his main girlfriend at the time, had insulted him with a homophobic slur after learning of the affair. In a July 31 text, Doe said she felt used and Ritter should never have let Green find out about them.

Was the Baltimore Bridge attacked? 👇

The Baltimore bridge collapse was an “absolutely brilliant strategic attack” on US critical infrastructure - most likely cyber - & our intel agencies know it. In information warfare terms, they just divided the US along the Mason Dixon line exactly like the Civil War.

Second busiest strategic roadway in the nation for hazardous material now down for 4-5 years - which is how long they say it will take to recover. The bridge was built specifically to move hazardous material - fuel, diesel, propane gas, nitrogen, highly flammable materials, chemicals and oversized cargo that cannot fit in the tunnels - that supply chain now crippled.

Make no mistake: this was an extraordinary attack in terms of planning, timing & execution.

The two critical components on that bridge are the two load-bearing pylons on each end, closest to the shore. They are bigger, thicker and deeper than anything else. These are the anchor points and they knew that hitting either one one of them would be a fatal wound to the integrity of the bridge.

Half a mile of bridge went in the river - likely you will have to build a new one. Also caused so much damage to the structural integrity of the bottom concrete part that you cannot see & won’t know until they take the wreckage apart. Structural destruction is likely absolutely.

The footage shows the cargo ship never got in the approach lane in the channel. You have to be in the channel before you get into that turn. Location was precise/deliberate: They chose a bend in the river where you have to slow down and commit yourself - once you are committed in that area there is not enough room to maneuver.

Should have had a harbor pilot to pilot the boat. You are not supposed to traverse any obstacles without the harbor pilot.

They chose a full moon so they would have maximum tidal shift - rise and fall. Brisk flow in that river on a normal day & have had a lot of rain recently so water was already moving along at a good pace.

Hit it with enough kinetic energy to knock the load-bearing pylon out from under the highway - which fatally weakens the span and then 50 percent of the bridge fell into the water.

All these factors when you look at it  - this is how you teach people how to do this type of attack and there are so few people left in the system who know this. We have a Junior varsity team on the field.

Tremendous navigational obstruction. Huge logistical nightmare to clean this up. The number of dead is tragic but not the whole measure of the attack.

That kind of bridge is constantly under repair - always at night because there is so much traffic and they cannot obstruct that during the day. So concern is for repair guys who were on foot (out of their vehicles) working who may now be in the water - 48 degrees at most at this time of year.

When you choke off Baltimore you have cut the main north-south hazardous corridor (I-95) in half. Now everyone has to go around the city - or go somewhere else.

To move some of that cargo through the tunnel you may be able to get a permit but those are slow to get and require an escort system that is expensive and has to be done at night.

For every $100 dollars that goes into the city, $12 comes from shipping. Believe this will cripple the city of Baltimore at a time when they do not have the resources to recover.

➨ "That's perfect!" You gave a thumbs up for reassurance, and then you began to call out for Wukong and try to spot that cheek monkey. After several attempts, you thought he was not here and sighed a defeated huff. Upon walking back to your dragon, before the arms of a familiar simian.

➨ "Peaches! Good to see you." The one and only Monkey King, Sun Wukong, hugged you from behind as you felt his tail wrapped around your waist affectionately. On the other hand, you nuzzled your cheek against his while gently caressing his face. "Hey Wukong, how's my gorgeous king doing?~" You replied lovingly as you gave him a peck on the nose, and instantly, his fur puffed and a shade of pink rose on his cheeks.

➨ "I'm fine, Y/N, but what brings you here? I don't remember inviting you to come over today." Wukong sounded confused about your unexpected arrival, so your childish smile came back, and you began uncontrollably giggling to yourself as Wukong gave you an abashed look.

➨ You turned around and waited for Wukong's reaction - and it was priceless. His mouth was left open in awe, while his eyes widened from shock and somewhat intense from the unexpected surprise.

➨ Your dragon approached you in a giddy mood, rushed up to you, and begged for head scratches, so you obliged. "So, what do you think? Pretty neat, huh?" Suddenly, your dragon galloped towards Wukong and gently nuzzled its scaly cheek on the Monkey King's face, mimicking your affection towards him.

➨ Of course, Wukong was taken aback but quickly recovered and began to laugh and have fun with your dragon. "You kiddin'? My lover is an awesome dragon raiser!" He then proceeds to hold you by your waist and happily swing you around as your dragon happily spreads one of its wings around the both of you. Once he lets you on the ground, he kisses you on the lips adoringly.  

➨ "Man, where did you find this little buddy?" He then got comfortable to lend a hand onto your dragon's neck and scratch its spiky chin. Of course, you know having a dragon known by the public will cause a lot of problems, so your dragon stays in a makeshift home you built away from people, where it is safe and spacious for your dragon.

➨ As you continued your quiet journey through the forest, you couldn't help but sense that someone was watching you from afar. Your skin felt a slight shiver, even when the wind wasn't around, and yet, every time you turned to check, you'd just keep walking and feeling some sort of familiarity.

➨ However, in the corner of your eye, you caught the slightest glimpse of a silhouette that somehow looked vaguely similar but disappeared the minute you saw it. You shrugged to yourself and thought it was the forest playing with your mind, but once you turned to face the path, the one and only Six-Eared Macaque was there, grinning as usual.

➨ You instinctively freaked out, and the mud from under your shoe managed to cause you to slip and fall. Still, at the last second, Macaque swiftly grabbed your hand and prevented you from getting dirty.

➨ He quietly chuckled. "I'd thought you'd gotten used to my little surprises, sugarplum~" he spoke deeply, as the tone was done on purpose before flashing a pearly smile.

➨ As he helped you stand up, you cupped your face to hide the fact that you were blushing. Unlike Wukong, Macaque was the kind of guy to tease and flirt often, even in the worst times possible.

➨ "But it's only raining a little." Instantly, the heavy rain began to emerge from the darkest patches of clouds, and a moment of silence took place. A feeling of embarrassment overwhelmed you, and your hands covered your face as you tried to survive the upcoming tease of your significant other.

➨ "Remember, Y/N, never jinx it." You didn't need to look up at him to see that smug look on his face, but the sound of the umbrella popping up made you look up and see he was preparing the umbrella to protect you from the harsh rain.

➨ "I've been meaning to ask you," Macaque began conversing with you, and you turned your head around to pay attention. "How come you're here in the first place?" ➨ "Well, you see. . ." You started strong before stopping yourself, which led Macaque to raise a brow in curiosity. Before you could tell him the truth, you finally arrived at the makeshift home for your dragon and decided to take his hand and lead him inside. "How about I show you." Again, you smile excitedly this time, and you see the slightest glimpse of a flustered face the moment your hands touch.

➨ "So before we go inside, I want you to promise me something." A sincere expression on your face looked back at Macaque, and again, he listened patiently to you as you struggled to muster the words. "When we enter, promise me you won't freak out, okay?" Macaque was obviously unfazed by your words, but you knew that would change when you opened the door. "Don't worry, Y/N," You decided to test him by revealing whatever was on the other side. "I'm pretty sure it'd be nothing-"

➨ As soon as the door swung wide open, your dragon was the first thing to be seen. It appeared to be resting inside peacefully, and Macaque's face was genuinely surprised. You calmly walked in, and sat down next to your dragon as they hummed happily from feeling your presence.

➨ You looked back at Macaque, where he was standing, but he wasn't there anymore. And as you looked around, he was already next to you and your dragon as he locked the door and put the umbrella away.

➨ "So. . .you're a dragon raiser, huh?" Macaque spoke again while you took out some food and placed some in a large bowl for your dragon, and they began to feast on their meal. "Well, I guess you could say that. Are you surprised?" You nervously replied as you weren't sure Macaque was handling the situation well.

➨ "I'm not surprised to see a dragon; I'm surprised you have one." In an honest tone, Macaque responded and seemed to be relatively calm. The conversation went nowhere, so you tried to make your interaction less awkward. "Yeah, I found them alone somewhere in a cave. And you know, a dragon living in the city would be disastrous, so I kept them here to be safe." You briefly explained, and a face of solace looked first at you and then at your dragon before placing his hand on their resting body.

Fun little Quirks for the Flock!

Tapetum Lucidum/Eyeshine. The classic staple. The shorthand, if you will, of saying “this thing ain’t human”. Most birds have yellow or red eyeshine to further distance them from mammals.

On a related note, bird pupils can normally expand way more than a human’s, especially in dim light. Catch any of the flock around dusk and there’s hardly any Iris left, just these black voids in the middle of their face.

Bird noises, my beloved— the flock can have a wide range of very-not-human sounds that they use among each other, and there’s no reason for these isolated kids to ever realize that they maybe shouldn’t do that in front of other humans.

So owls are not the only bird with extended neck movements. A lot of birds have higher neck mobility. Which is to say that the flock should be able to turn their heads a good 120 degrees without much issue, and this is ANOTHER thing that they’d likely forget most people can’t do.

I know it was a funny moment when someone tried to give them bird seed, but it would be genuinely interesting for them to have diet changes. All of them have given into the urge to eat raw meat at least once. Some of them do it regularly, especially when they’re traveling.

Straight-up teeth gore. Birds are, at their core, reptiles, closely related to alligators and crocodiles. So it makes sense for the flock, since they have teeth instead of beaks, to have them fall out and regrow from time to time, especially if those teeth are damaged.

Steven the sweetest boy starts to have doubts if you don't come home. Before Marc, he begins to wonder if you're...real.

How could someone so wonderful really be his? Maybe he conjured you. He can't tell his waking life from his dreams.

After Marc, he gains understanding and surety in his life. When you don't arrive home on time, he always starts calmly with a text. "You alright, love?"

If he doesn't hear from you, he will try to talk himself down. After all, he's been a mess all this time - surely, he must have missed something you said?

He calls you, but if you don't answer, he does NOT trust voice mail anymore.

Steven is reasonable. He will contact a few friends and your work. If he gets overly worried, one of his alters will likely take over.

When you arrive home, he's attentive, affectionate, grateful. He wants to touch and feel you - his real life love.

Marc feels a spike of cold fear right through the center of him.

When you're late, he punishes himself. He has to be the reason you don't want to come home.

His concern will come out as anger. You'll try to explain - he won't be mean to you, it will be directed inward. This can explode into passion or do a 180 and put some distance between you.

"I can't lose you," he finally admits, in a defeated whisper.

If it’s your mistake, you will spend some time apologizing and reassuring him. It will get physical. In the best way.

If someone has hurt you, well…

Jake is independent. He respects that you are too. He can take care of himself - you can take care of yourself. He trusts you. He gives you time to be late, to need space, to explain.

If he gets too worried, he will find you, pretty quickly. He has all the same skills as Marc but hasn't used them as often - not in the same ways. He usually steps in when Marc is at his maximum.

It's simple with Jake. He'll let you know he's waiting for you and wants to hear from you. If you're stuck at work, he's waiting outside with his car to give you a ride and glare at your boss.

If your phone is dead, you'll have an extra charger bought for you the next day.

If someone else is the reason you're late, he'll have a very short conversation with them and it won't happen again.

If someone has hurt you, they will have breathed their last.

Hi friends! It's that time again! I'm so excited to host the Second Annual Spicy Six Fanworks Challenge! The past year of seasonal challenges has been such a blast, and I can't wait to see what people come up with this time around!

Here are the rules: 

It's a Spicy Six challenge so of course, you must include someone from the Spicy Six (Robin, Nancy, Jonathan, Eddie, Steve, Argyle). Don't feel pressured to include everyone, of course. You can be ship-specific or general. Chrissy is also included! (I know that makes seven– I just don't want to change the title, honestly.)

There are two links below, one for dialogue prompts and one for more general prompts. Please DM me at thefreakandthehair with your claim. Prompts go on a first come, first serve basis, and historically, they've gone fairly quickly! I'm just one person, so DMs make it easier for me to see who claimed what first. If we're friends on Discord, that's also totally fine since those are timestamped, too.

More than one person can claim the same prompt if it’s for a different pairing/character/grouping or if it’s for a different medium (i.e.: a prompt can be claimed for a fic by one person, and the same prompt can be claimed for a fanart by someone else).

This year, I'm limiting people to two prompts per person. If you'd like to use two for one fic, please just claim the one that's the main inspiration and feel free to use whichever others you'd like within the fic!

Shark Sundays: Epaulette Shark

Hello, hello! Welcome to my Shark Sundays post where every week I let people pick a shark that I then just kind of info dump about on Sundays. This week's shark winner is the Epaulette shark!

Now, please remain seated for the whole ride and try not to throw popcorn at the narrator, they're very sensitive.

Conservation Status: Least Concerned

This adorable little sea pup is the Epaulette shark or Hemiscyllium ocellatum! Their base body color is a creamy or slightly brownish hue and marked with widely spaced dark brown spots. The Epaulette shark gets its name from the very large, white-margined black spot behind each pectoral fin, which kinda looks like decorative military epaulettes. These little guys are one of the smaller species of sharks growing at a maximum of 27 to 35 inches long (70-90 cm) and living for around 20 to 25 years. They can be found in shallow tropical water at around the depth of 131 ft. (40 m) in the western Pacific Ocean usually near New Guinea and Australia.

The Epaulette shark feeds at low tide and is most active during dusk and dawn. They hunt for food by pushing their snout into the sand and shuffling around, once the prey is located they will thrash their body around to catch it. The way they chew their food is actually kinda cute as they'll chew it with little bits sticking out of their mouth. Speaking of prey and eating, these guys eat things that are somehow tinier than they are, mostly feeding on crustaceans, small fish, and polychaete worms. The adults will usually eat shrimp and crabs while the juveniles will mostly eat worms and fish. Though both of them use suction feeding!

Now because these little cuties are usually found in warm, shallow waters they regularly interact with humans. If you happen to see one in the water, don't panic! The most these guys might do is nip at your toes if you wiggle 'em too much but otherwise, they're completely harmless and have no recorded attacks on humans.

Fun Fact: Some Epaulettes are actually kept as pets. They thrive pretty well in smaller environments and are relatively docile besides the occasional little bite to their caretakers.

Now that we've gotten past the basics now I can tell you about the most fascinating thing about Epaulettes. Are you ready? Cause you gotta be ready for this fact. It's a really cool fact. Are you sitting down? Not drinking anything? Ok, ok here it is:

Epaulette sharks can walk on dry land for up to 98 ft. (30 m) and survive hypoxia - a deficiency of oxygen- for two. whole. hours.

Yeah, you read that correctly. The Epaulette SHARK can walk!!! on land!!! Look at this gif and tell me it's not the coolest shit you've ever seen.

Look at him go!! AHH!! *shakes you aggressively* WE ARE LITERALLY WATCHING A MARINE ANIMAL GO THROUGH THE EVOLUTION OF LEARNING TO WALK ON LAND!!! IT COULD POSSIBLY EVOLVE TO BE A FULL LAND ANIMAL WITHIN 30 TO 40 YEARS!!!!

*ahem* Now you may be asking, "But Mal, why are they walking on land?" Well, there are multiple answers to this question. The main one is that they do this to get from tide pool to tide pool allowing them to access new pools to forage for food, or tidepools with better-oxygenated water. They also use this little talent to evade predators! As y'know, other sharks and large fish can't walk on land like this absolute Chad. Scientists believe that with the effects of climate change, this ability will help them to survive drastic changes to their environments.

Speaking of survival, let's talk about the Epaulette's conservation status. Thankfully for these little guys, the IUCN Red List has them as a species under "least concern" This means that there's nothing that really poses any major risk to their species and they're relatively abundant. They do, of course, have natural predators but because it has no value as a commercial food fish and is not considered a sport fish, the Epaulette isn't really targeted by humans except for the aquarium trade. So if you're favorite shark is the Epaulette then you've got pretty much nothing to worry about as the Epaulette's are happy and thriving!

This doesn't mean that humans pose no threat to the Epaulette. Our actions still have a huge impact on their lives! From overfishing to reef destruction, and how toxic the exotic trade can be, we still have to be careful. It's important that we recognize our actions have consequences and not just on us. It's our job to spread awareness and hold each other accountable (especially big corporations who cause most of the damage.)
