Animal of the Day!

Grevy’s Zebra (Equus grevyi)

Conservation Status- Endangered

Habitat- Northern Kenya; Southeast Ethiopia

Size (Weight/Length)- 450 kg; 2.5 m

Diet- Grasses; Fruits; Leaves; Bark; Beans

Cool Facts- With a more mule-like appearance than their horse-like cousins, the Grevy’s zebra is the world’s rarest zebra. Mares gather in small herds led by a head stallion, wandering their arid home. These herds are non-territorial and travel between stallion territories. The lead stallion often travels with the mares for his own protection and usually submits to any territorial stallion they encounter. Grevy’s zebra mate year round and mares produce a single foal. Foals imprint on their mom by memorizing her fingerprint-like stripes. Male zebras are very friendly towards foals and gather them into small groups while their moms are off drinking or eating. Males will even take care of non-related foals with the hope his willingness to help out will convince the mother to mate with him the following year.

I'm on a badge making stall for IDAHOBIT, International Day Against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination (May 17). We're a youth focus community organisation.

I want to prepare a load of badge sized pride flags, and a load of pronouns, so queer people can make badges with their flags and pronouns, or whatever they want.

Could any of my mutuals or anyone offer suggestions for flags and/or pronouns I should include? I'd love it if everyone feels seen and included.

Barreleye (Macropinna microstoma)

Conservation Status- Unlisted

Habitat- Northern Pacific Ocean

Size (Weight/Length)- 10 cm

Diet- Plankton; Small jellyfish

Cool Facts- This specific species of barreleye has a completely translucent head. This fluid filled area allows for the back of its eyes to be seen. Generally, they tend to live in the ocean from around 600 to 800 meters down where they stay relatively motionless. They hunt on jellyfish that live in the deep and their strong digestive system easily breaks down any toxins they consume. Barreleyes rarely meet and are nonagressive when they do. They are rarely seen by humans expect when they are pulled up as bycatch from deep sea nets.

Rating- 11/10 (Little guys pack a punch.)
