Hey friends 💙 So life update… I’m going to be a teacher! I’ll be teaching high school chemistry and I’m honestly really excited. Because I didn’t major in education for undergrad I’m technically a “resident” teacher so that I can teach and get my masters in education at the same time. Is a new program to get professionals to come back and teach since so many are burnt out. I’ve always loved teaching people about science so it will be fun to do so with the youths.

But… it was a bitter sweet decision because this wasn’t what I’ve been working towards. I wanted to be a genetic counselor, but getting into a GC program just wasn’t in the cards for me. It’s incredibly competitive. I know someone who’s decided to go to med school instead because its easier to get into. I know I was a good candidate and I would have been a great GC, but for my mental health I have to put that on hold.

I wanted to tell you all because I don’t think we hear enough about the people who dont “make it” or have to resort to “plan b”. I think we’re afraid of admitting these things because we’re worried it means we are failures. Not to mention the inherent sadness of not getting something you’ve spent so much time perusing. But I didn’t fail. I worked really hard and used the excuse of getting into grad school to not only improve academically but as a person. I think my brother said it best when I didn’t match again for the 4th time. He told me, “Good job”, because I did. I did a really good job. There is no failure in taking what I’ve achieved and focusing it on something else for the sake of myself. Maybe its not my dream job, but as a teacher I get to educate people about the incredible world of science. Thats all I’ve ever wanted to do. Now I get to.

So to any of you that felt like you had to give up something you were pursuing, good job. You should be proud of the work you did and where it haw lead you today. You did a great job.
