Last night I got to go see Mythos Ragnarök at Melbourne Fringe 🔥
Honestly feels like this show was made for me - it's a Norse gods wrestling spectacular and I had an absolute blast cheering on my namesake (Loki).
Seriously one of The Best shows I've seen!
All of the performers were exceptional athletes, passionate actors and thoroughly entertaining!

as part of the 2023 MELBOURNE FRINGE FESTIVAL
An original theatre piece by Ty Liebelt, Only What Remains Is Beautiful is an hour-long real-time anecdote; exploring the fog of social trauma and its presence within identity. Imagine a soothsayer. A Tiresias sort of character. They've got all the cosmic wisdom that everyone craves. But they've also got that eccentric awkwardness that no one can tolerate for a second. Now imagine a day when this soothsayer steps out of their cave to discover that The Apocalypse has happened. And they slept through the whole thing! More alone than ever before, our soothsayer sets out on a journey. Where? They haven't the foggiest. Why? They're...still working that out. To find what, exactly? Someone! ANYONE! Just. One. Other. Human. Because despite this empty planet, the soothsayer can still hear voices... Echoes amidst the rubble... Only What Remains Is Beautiful is a uniquely layered, absurdist tale about redefining loneliness. A desperate, bewildered and soul-building pilgrimage to the very literal ends of the earth. Think 'Fleabag' meets Samuel Beckett meets a post-apocalyptic walking simulator video game. Contains mild coarse language, infrequent sexual references, discussion of suicide/self harm, death, war and mental health.

anyone in Melbourne over the fringe festival PLEASE do yourselves a favour and go see Godz. four of the most beautiful men I've ever seen. balls out. cuntiest cupid/Zeus in the world. I fell in love with Hercules. Apollo was gorgeous. Dionysus also could severely get it. Zeus's phone went off with a grindr notification. high flying routines went crazy. hades also served like the underworld depended on it. 10/10 would go again.

In honour of First Nations Day at the AO here’s a few of my favourites from our rainy day visit to the NGV.

Started our indoor day at the library. Couple of exhibitions - one celebrating 40 years of Fringe Festivals and the other called Year of the Book. You never really consider the significance of these two items on our human development. Fringe Festivals push our limits and of course, books can do the same but also record our history. Fascinating.
Finished off our day with some tasty wonton soup for dinner. I think it’s going to be a great evening for more tennis viewing.
Rain rain go away, come again another day. Wondering if that chant will work.

Similar bodices, different skirts: A Star Princess journey
ROW 1: US costumes. The US bodices has been fairly consistent in look, with heavy and ornate double beading, distinct ombre effect and rich fringe and sleeve deco. The skirts also look about the same, but a closer look reveals some differences. Some has been darker pink, some almost white, and some with a bold ombre effect from pink to white. The "cloudy" look also varies a bit. Depicted: Tamra Lynn Glaser in Los Angeles, Elizabeth Welch on Broadway, and Elizabeth Southard on Broadway.
ROW 2: Australia / World Tour. Whereas these bodices too has been fairly consistent in look; short, with rounded tabs and sky blue fringe and puffed sleeves, the skirts has varied a bit. The first skirts in Australia were big, with defined curves, and gentle ombre effect. Later skirts made of similar materials were narrower and stiffer, and without ombre effect. A third version used a small silvery patterned top layer instead of the silver flower style previously seen. All of them feature rows of silver stars. Depicted: Marina Prior in Melbourne, Kin So Hyun in Seoul, and Claire Lyon in the World Tour.
ROW 3: Paris / World Tour / China. The heavily beaded bodices with dark blue "fluff" and rows of beaded fringe was originally made for Paris. They they were depicted with a pink skirt with silvery top layer featuring big stars. The bodice was re-used in the World Tour, but here paired with their paler skirt with small silver-star sparkly skirt and rows of silver stars. For its third incarnation in China it was paired with a UK style skirt with pink ombre top layer and rows of silver stars. Depicted: Sierra Boggess in Paris, Clara Verdier in the World Tour revival, and Cai Min in China.
ROW 4: UK / South Korea / Restaged Tour. The new type of fairly undecorated bodices in bold colours has seen some different skirt pairings. In the UK they usually do equally bold shiny silks with ombre effect and rows of silver stars. In South Korea they've made the curious choice of not adding an ombre silk layer on top, but they do the rows of silver stars. In the Restaged Aussie Tour they did the ombre silk top layer, but with smaller rows of stars only in front. Depicted: Lucy St Louis in the West End revival, Gamin Kwon in Seoul, and Amy Manford in the Restaged Aussie Tour.
ROW 5: Spain / South America / Russia. The bodices has been rebeaded a couple of times and the tabs changed, but they can usually be identified by highly ornate beading with a beaded front row dividing the middle tab, and bust decoration set very high. The skirts has however varied a lot, from very long and very pale shimmering ones in Spain to semi-long cloudy pink in South America to fairly short sparkly ombre pink in Russia. All versions have rows of silver stars. Depicted: Felicidad Farag in Madrid, Kiara Sasso in Saou Paulo, and Elena Bahtiyarova in Moscow.

summary: Old feelings die hard. Do they die harder than a bad crash at Spa? warning(s): angst, mild description of non-lifethreatening injury a/n: shoutout to every sad reader of Soy lago and All this, just to say goodbye - this one's for you :') this was inspired by lando's real crash at Spa, but takes place after melbourne 2024 in universe.
At Spa, Lando sees red.
He sees it in the rim of the soft tyres his pit crew all but rips off his car, as the rain transforms from a mist to a drizzle to a steady downpour. He sees it in the Ferrari struggling in his rearview mirrors, an unlikely sight for the usually dominant car. He sees it in the flag the stewards wave during Q3 as a bolt of plasma splits the sky in half. And he sees it in the flash of balaclava that gets hurled to the floor in anger. Carlos never made it out of Q2.
Lando sticks his hand in his pocket, making sure the precious cargo inside has remained dry. Luckily, the fireproofs seem also to be relatively waterproof. He inhales deeply, lets the air rush out through his nostrils. Weaves his way through the paddock.
Oscar is fully unconscious, curled up like a cat on a bench in the garage, hood pulled over his wavy hair. Lando can’t help but smile at the sleepy young driver as he walks past McLaren to the red Ferrari garage. It’s all too much for little Oscar Piastri, a voice in his head sings.
Carlos gesticulates wildly to a race marshal, the tops of his cheeks flushed. His lower jaw juts out angrily, his eyes narrowed. It’s rare for the cool-headed driver to lose his temper, but Lando remembers the crevice that opens between his dark eyebrows well. He saw it after Ferrari gave him some truly dogwater strategy calls in Monaco last year. He saw it when Pierre shoved him after the Canadian qualis. And who could forget, hardly a year ago, being interviewed about that five-second penalty in Melbourne? 
Lando figures it’s about him getting knocked out in Q2. A crazy idea floats into his mind.
No, he tells himself firmly. No more offering to go on a walk. You’re over this.
Less than ten paces away, Carlos is hilariously juxtaposed by Charles spread horizontally out over an armchair, legs dangling off an armest like a little kid, smirking as he undoubtedly texts some new romantic conquest on his phone.
Lando moves on.
Pierre is inexplicably in the AlphaTauri (Lando refuses to call it Visa Cash App Red Bull) motorhome, wielding a black tray of...ew, where did he get sushi? Lando wrinkles his nose in disgust as he gracefully picks up a piece of dark red fish with a pair of chopsticks and feeds it to Yuki. 
“Just so you know,” he hears Pierre say, “if you’re not hungry anymore I’m finishing the rest of it.”
“Okay!” Yuki chirps happily.
Pierre’s fond chuckles fade away as Lando passes Haas—where Kevin and Nico are busy dribbling a football between their ankles—and makes a beeline for Williams. Of course George is loitering around, because Alex is there. Their heads are bent together conspiratorially over Alex’s phone. George giggles like a schoolgirl, tucks a nonexistent strand of hair behind his ear. Blushes. What a fool.
“Mates,” Lando calls out.
George and Alex shoot apart, eyes darting frantically from side to side. Lando rolls his own. It could not be more obvious if they carried around a neon sign that said “WE’RE MADLY IN LOVE WITH EACH OTHER BUT REFUSE TO SAY IT OUT LOUD”.
“Hey Lando,” Alex says casually. “Any word on when they’re letting us back out?”
“Aw, mate,” George teases, “seeing as you’re not even in Q3, I should think it doesn’t even mat—ouch!” His jab is interrupted by Alex elbowing him between his ribs. George snatches Alex’s hat from his head in retaliation, placing it atop his dirty blond waves.
Lando fights back the sudden urge to vomit at their saccharine affection. “Er, no.”
“Carlos is giving the stewards an earful,” George narrows his deep blue eyes. The dark fringe of his lashes almost touch. “I overheard him talking about how it’s dangerous, how they should postpone Q3.”
This is news to Lando. He’d assumed Carlos was angry about his quali result. 
Alex chuckles. “Who died and made Carlos the weather police?”
“Sorry, gotta go,” Lando says hurriedly, brushing past them out of Williams. George waves him off, his other arm stretching out oh-so-casually behind Alex’s slim waist.
The thing was, every once in a while, Carlos just got feelings. Eerily accurate ones. Lando remembered Silverstone in 2022 all too well—Carlos had joked to Danny that he should avoid George because he got the feeling he’d be extra menacing that day. Not that Danny had taken him entirely to heart, but if he’d pushed from the get go, it might’ve been the former McLaren hurtling over the tyre barrier instead of Zhou...
The McLaren garage comes into view when someone grabs his forearm. Lando whirls around, comes face to face with a pair of slightly manic brown eyes. The tall collar of a red racing suit.
“Carlos—”
“Lando,” Carlos says in a low voice. “I need you to be...careful.”
“Huh?” Lando asks, perplexed.
Carlos gestures to the rain, which has lightened considerably. “The marshals, they are starting up Q3 again. I don’t like that.”
Lando squints up at the gray clouds. It didn’t seem like the rain was going to get any worse. He was probably off the mark on this one. “Ooookay, Carlos. Whatever you say.”
“I’m serious, Lando,” Carlos insists. Lando is taken aback by the urgency in his voice. “I just...I just have a bad feeling about this.”
Will’s radio bleats in his ear. “Lando, ten minutes to start, ten minutes, please come back to the garage as soon as you can.”
“I gotta go back,” he mutters to Carlos, and the other driver’s grip on his arm reluctantly slackens.
“Be careful,” Carlos pleads once again, finally letting him go.
Lando hurries back to the garage, shaking his head as if that would help clear his jumbled thoughts. I’m sure he was like this to everyone. To Charles. I know he begged him to be careful, too. We’re all friends now, remember?
But as Lando pulls his helmet on, watching Oscar frown up at the darkened sky, he can’t help but wonder if the desperation in Carlos’ voice was meant just for him. As he pulls forward slowly for the out lap, he sees Carlos pacing around, and when they make eye contact, the Spaniard’s face is stricken.
He can’t help but imagine Carlos fretting over him, and only him, and he smiles.

Lando hasn’t even finished his out lap when the rain starts to come down in sheets again. “It’s definitely wet,” he tells his race engineer.
“Should be good, Lando, should be good for one hot lap for those tyres.”
No way. But what can he do?
He feels the car lose control at La Source. Just enough to scare him.
“I dunno, it’s almost too wet. Some aquaplaning. Quite a bit of aquaplaning.”
“Okay, understood.”
Lando squints down Eau Rouge. Red Water. Sure enough, the rain has made the creek below the track swell, mixed with clay. He sees red.
“The rain will continue for...six more minutes,” he hears as the car aquaplanes again. 
Lando hurtles down the straight with no control at all.
He closes his eyes, braces himself for impact. 
A sickening crunch, and his car spins out, only after what seems like an eternity coming to a stop.
“Lando, are you okay?” Will sounds through the radio.
Lando figures he has about fifteen seconds before the damage kicks in. His fingers scrabble for the radio button on his wheel. Oh god. His hands are shaking so badly that he misses it the first time.
“Lando, are you okay?” The question is now tinged with panic.
He hits the button.
“Yeh—” Lando ekes out—“all good.” 
Then, before he can turn the radio off, the pain slams into him like a truck. He groans into the mic, thinking he wouldn’t be all that surprised if all his bones had shattered with the impact of the crash.
“Can you get out of the car?” Will demands.
Mate, I can hardly lift my neck, Lando retorts silently. But he wills himself to get it together, feebly attempts to hoist himself to a standing position. No, wait, the wheel. He tries to unscrew the wheel and place it on the chassis. The twisting motion of his arms makes his chest feel like it’s erupting into flames. And it was getting steadily harder to breathe. What was happening?
He hates this. Hates that it might all end here, just like this. He wonders if Carlos saw him crash, and desperately prays he hadn’t witnessed it. Lando doesn’t want this to be his last memory of him. 
Soy lago, Carlitos. Chili. I’m sorry. His fingers find the piece of soft, worn paper in his pocket. He closes his fist tightly around the paper airplane. 
Lando tries his best to breathe. He knows it’s a losing battle.
He vaguely registers people shouting at each other—paramedics, he hopes. A fluorescent green ambulance, lights blazing. Two sets of hands grasp him under his armpits and haul him out of the car. His chest hurts so badly, his vision’s starting to white out at the edges.
“Ah—ow,” he hears his own voice say, and then everything—finally—goes mercifully dark.

When he opens his eyes, Lando sees someone standing in the doorway, clothed in red.
Right. The crash. He wonders whether he’d died, and some version of Carlos was waiting to take him up to heaven. He smiles, and feels a searing pain across his dry, cracking lips. Dammit. He probably wouldn’t have chapped lips if he really was dead.
“Thank god Lando, you’re awake,” the scarlet-clad driver says...in a French accent. Lando’s heart sinks.
Charles winds his way through the army of IV poles, wires, and monitors surrounding the bed. “How are you feeling?”
Lando takes a mental inventory of his battered body. He recalls his chest being on fire, which had now reduced to a dull ache. He pushes the covers down, revealing several ugly bruises encircling his ribcage. And, to his mild horror, a tube draining right out of his chest.
Morphine, he decides, is truly God’s gift to mankind.
Charles winces when he sees the chest tube. “They said one of your lungs collapsed. Your broken ribs...they punctured it.”
“Lovely,” Lando mutters.
“All that matters is that you’re okay, mate,” Charles sighs. “You will be okay.”
He pulls out a crumpled ball of paper from his pocket. Lando stares at the remains of Carlos’ note, now from five whole years ago...
Charles, noticing his recognition, places it gently on his bedside table. 
“You were holding onto it so tightly...even when you were passed out.” He closes his eyes. “No one knew what it was, until Carlos—” Lando shudders reflexively at the name—“came by and found it.”
His green eyes bore holes into Lando’s blue ones.
“Carlos was scared to death,” Charles adds quietly. “He was doing an interview, and he saw your car spin, and the reporter told him it was you. He didn’t finish his sentence, let alone the interview—he went silent. If you saw the look on his face...” He shakes his head, as if doing so would erase the memory. “He heard you on radio and he looked...he looked like he wished he was in the car instead.”
Lando swallows hard. “Is he—is he here?”
“No. He’s back at Ferrari.”
He nods. It’s probably for the best.
“Thanks for coming by, Charles.”
Charles pats him gently on the shoulder and leaves. Lando gingerly reaches for the crumpled paper plane, unfolds it. 
The ink is blurred from the rain and sweat and drops of maroon—which used to be bright red—bloom on it, but Lando doesn’t need to read it to know what it used to say.
He wishes, even though he shouldn’t, that he could have one more walk with Carlos.

“Landito,” comes a soft voice through the darkness.
Lando squints, because he would know that voice anywhere. His heart starts pounding, reflected in the frenzied symphony his monitors begin to emit.
“Carlos?”
“Sí.” Carlos emerges from the darkened hallway.
It’s past midnight, at least. Lando had heard the nurse murmuring to herself as she took down his vitals. “You’re not supposed to be here, I think...” 
“I know. I snuck in. It was on purpose.”
Carlos snuck into the hospital? For Lando?
“Can I come in?” Carlos asks. Lando waves him into the room, grimacing at the pain shooting through his shoulder with the motion.
He wonders whether morphine can make someone hallucinate, and looks lovingly at the line connected to the crook of his arm, wondering if he could swindle a nurse into giving him some more tomorrow. 
Then Lando becomes aware of Carlos standing by his bed, giving him a very strange look indeed. He clears his throat. 
“Um. Hi.”
Carlos kneels beside him. Lando is suddenly conspicuous of how exposed he is, the bandages, the bruises, that damn tube…
“Lando,” Carlos says, hoarsely. “I should’ve said something. Done something.”
He feels completely bewildered. “What? Carlos, you couldn’t have—there’s no way you could’ve known—“
“But there was,” whispers Carlos morosely. “I’ve aquaplaned at that corner before, I tried to tell the stewards it wasn’t safe…I didn’t try hard enough…”
He gently traces the bruises on Lando’s ribs. Lando’s not entirely sure, but he swears he sees Carlos’ eyes well up. 
Then he remembers Carlos glaring, all but going hand to hand with the stewards, and laughs. 
“Oh, Carlitos,” he says, breathlessly, “you always know the damnest things.”
Carlos looks utterly baffled at Lando’s laughing. 
“I have very little left to lose,” he says slowly, frowning. “But the one thing I will not...is you.” 
“Carlos?” Lando’s voice trembles. He’s not laughing anymore. 
“Hmm?"
“I’m sorry. About everything.”
He feels Carlos’ warm hand take his, and give him a squeeze. “There is no I’m sorry, my muppet friend.”
“Then?”
Lando can see the dim lights of the monitors reflected in Carlos’ huge, glassy brown eyes. Overflowing with warmth. Tenderness. Maybe even love.
Carlos reaches into his pocket, slowly produces a piece of folded cardstock. It’s red. Lando’s eyes widen as he takes in the pointy nose, the crisp wings. An airplane. Completely dissimilar from the hastily constructed, ripped-from-a-random-engineer’s-legal-pad one Lando had been toting around for so long. 
He presses it into Lando’s palm. “I guess it was time for a new one.”
Then he leans over, and brushes Lando’s forehead with the barest whisper of his lips, leaving Lando dizzy, overwhelmed. 
“Goodnight, Landito,” he breathes before he disappears, as if he was little more than a dream.
Lando unfolds the little plane with quaking fingers. 
This time, six words greet him, written in gorgeous script. Slow. Intentional. Utterly deliberate.
There is only...I love you.
Soy lago, Lando thinks as a tear snakes its way down his cheek.
But this time…for all of the right reasons.

[“Though Seattle has its own ugly history of redlining, which deserves far more attention than it currently receives, the process of segregation started much earlier, with the founding of the city itself in the mid-nineteenth century, and did not involve the federal government. At that time, white settlers removed the Duwamish people and segregated them in the southern fringes of the city, eager to take their lands but also to make them available as workers. Settlers even blocked efforts by the federal government to create a reservation for the Duwamish on their ancestral homelands because it would interfere with the city’s access to a steady labor supply. Seattle did not have reliable land-based transportation until the late nineteenth century, and even then water remained a primary mode of transportation, making the Duwamish and other Coast Salish peoples a valuable source of labor.
Marked as a disorderly slum, the south end became a container for all of the city’s racialized and marginalized populations, which, in turn, served to further mark them as undesirable and unworthy for inclusion into urban society. This included Asian migrants, who were also restricted south of Yesler Way, and single male laborers, whose deviation from normative family life also made them racially suspect in the eyes of the settler elites. Seattle’s urban landscape developed around this north-south orientation, with the north as a “residence district” for white families and the south as a stigmatized slum district for the city’s heterogeneous workforce.
This example reveals the colonial roots of racial segregation, as well as the function of racial segregation in forming the urban and regional economy. The south end was not a stable district with a racially defined population, but one that constantly changed according to the needs of the broader economy and the kinds of workers available at that particular moment. In this way, Seattle shares historical commonalities with Vancouver, Melbourne, and other cities across the Anglophone Pacific world that developed in the mid-nineteenth century around resource-based economies reliant upon Indigenous lands and the mass influx of Asian and European labor. In these contexts, segregation occurred as part of a colonial project to remove the Indigenous inhabitants and establish the city as a pure space of white domestic life.
As Asian and European migrants, many of them single men, arrived to work in extractive economies, spaces such as reserves and slums served to contain Indigenous and racially mixed populations and mark them as unruly, troublesome, and antithetical to modern urban life. As sociologist Renisa Mawani has discussed in the case of Vancouver, settlers relied upon a racially mixed workforce to build the economy but also feared the possibility of the interracial solidarities and alliances this mixing could generate. She calls this the “deep paradox” of a colonial society rooted in both capitalist accumulation and racial purity. In Seattle, the north-south spatial orientation served to smooth over this tension between, on one hand, racial heterogeneity as demanded by capitalist accumulation and the ever-expanding search for labor and, on the other, racial purity as envisioned by white settlers. It allowed settlers to maintain an exclusionary white district while also accommodating an Indigenous and racially mixed labor force.”]

Sam Campbell's 2016 show 'Zanzoop'.
"Kind of like Dr. Phil but hosted by a funny naked party-alien."
'Zanzoop' was a comedy show in (April-May) 2016 performed around Australia (Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Sydney). Created by Sam Campbell, Aaron Chen and Tom Walker in the collective 'Feeble Minds', Tom Walker directed and won Director's Choice Award at Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2016.
Sam plays an alien called Zanzoop, a "semi-naked space alien, hosting a sort of chat show in an attempt to fix humanity’s problems and prove himself a worthy heir to the throne of Zymbalnation. And this is one of the more sober premises of the hour." (Steve Bennett, Chortle).
Craig Anderson, Sean Conway and Cameron Whiteford also made appearances on Zanzoop (the latter two appearing in Perth shows).

Tonight I went to see Oh Yuck, It's Me by Jessie Ngaio!
I have so many thoughts and feelings to process so I cannot accurately describe in words yet the full impact of this performance but for now I will say: I laughed, I cried, I was in awe watching someone pull themselves apart and remake themself in a flurry of paint and visceral vulnerability. I am so happy I got to see this show and I feel connected to myself in a different way having been able to experience it.
Biggest thank you to my dear friend Roslyn for helping me with accessing the venue and your support tonight, you make braving the outside a worthwhile adventure every time 🖤

Annie (Aurelia) & Lena (Mo): more about these funny geniuses

So after posting the fun outtakes from their 🌶️ scene yesterday, thought you all deserved to know more about these legends! Because we love them both so muuuuch!!!
We first met Lena Moon (Mo) when we all were studying screenwriting together (which is also where Lauren and I met!) - so it’s such a joy to work with her on this show. LOOK AT THESE BABIES!!!

Lena then introduced us to Annie Lumsden (Aurelia) when they started to perform together in a sketch comedy duo Annie and Lena! So we owe Lena a bunch for helping us find our Co-Captain!
Annie and Lena as a duo are so incredibly funny and have the best comedic chemistry (which I’m sure you can tell by listening). A few of their career highlights include their debut show together This Is Our Pilot being nominated for Best Comedy at the Melbourne Fringe Festival 2019, and their second show This Is Our Show sold out its Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2021 season, was nominated for a Green Room Award for Best Ensemble, and was turned into a Live Stream and On Demand comedy special titled This Is Our Show: The Livestream. (So yeah, they’re pretty damn good!)

I've answered these questions on various platforms for over ten years now, I think? That's wild. There's better questions out there but tradition is tradition.
1. What did you do this year that you’d never done before?
Put on a mother-fucking Fringe show. Bought a Lego advent calendar. Got divorced lol.
2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions?
I don't really make them any more, but I feel like I set out what I wanted to do.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Yeah, a few of my good friends from work.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
No.
5. What cities/states/countries did you visit?
My partner finally moved here from Brisbane, but I did a couple of final trips there and we went back for a wedding. I did a whirlwind trip to Melbourne and while it was fun I found out I am not the kind of person who thrives on flying somewhere for less than 24 hours.
6. What would you like to have next year that you lacked this year?
Money. God, I hate this is the answer, but my rent got super jacked up and my partner hasn't found a job here yet and everything is find but it's tight as fuck and I hate working so goddamn hard and feeling like I have nothing to show for it.
7. What date(s) from this year will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
February my show was performed. April my partner moved here. Two of the biggest days of my life honestly.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
The show was huge. I wrote and performed something I had written, with my own financial backing and organisation and steam, and it's something I have always wanted to do. And I just did it. I then started making more and more moves to make this my life, like asking to go part-time at work and starting my podcast again and putting together a Patreon.
9. What was your biggest failure?
I actually can't think of anything which is kind of wild. After leaving my husband last year I really grabbed a hold of my agency in my life. It's been pretty incredible.
10. What other hardships did you face?
I had a lot to grieve and process about the separation and I am very thankful to my therapist for all the work she did there.
My current relationship is wonderful but being two adults coming together is going to have more baggage and things to work through. It's so absolutely worth it.
11. Did you suffer illness or injury?
In July I was diagnosed with polycystic-ovary syndrome, which is yet another nail in the coffin of my ever being able to have children.
Along with that came a further investigation into my blood sugar and I was told I had pre-diabetes. This scared the shit out of me, cause I was really fucking close. I was also terrified about doing the work to try and reverse it, because I didn't want to get back into disordered eating territory. But I had incredible help from a dietician and I read really tempered, reasonable information, and I managed to make small, sustainable changes and turn that entire shit around. Within six months my levels were completely back to normal and all my other negative health markers were reversed. Honestly, this was another huge achievement.
12. What was the best thing you bought?
I just bought a new guitar that has become a huge joy in my life. I also got into beading when I went to see the Eras tour movie to make bracelets and I've kept it up and I absolutely love it as a hobby. Otherwise, I didn't really make a lot of big purchases. Contributing financially to helping my boyfriend move was pretty great to get him here.
13. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
I am often resisting the urge to come on here and write a very gushy post about my boyfriend, but god he is great. I wrote last year that I highly recommend falling in love in your thirties. My mum commented at Christmas that it's clear how happy he makes me, but it's beyond happy - he makes me calm. Even when things are hard and messy he is such a solid presence in my life, and he is so, so bloody nice to me, and I keep waiting for it to stop feeling like a crush and exciting every time I see him but it's been almost two years and that just has never gone away. He is so ridiculously supportive of me and has worked so hard on himself and I'm so proud of him.
14. Whose behaviour made you appalled?
No names, but a few people at work made me feel like I was banging my head against the wall.
Also, fuck everyone who has been supporting Israel's attack on Palestine.
15. Where did most of your money go?
Rent and household expenses is the very boring but realistic answer.
16. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
My show. My boyfriend finally moving here. Seeing Barbie.
17. What song will always remind you of this year?
I was so terrible at listening to new music this year. The songs that were written for my show, I guess. I listened to Peach Prc and Tessa Violet a lot, but I don't know if those songs will remind me of the year. Maybe Kitchen Song.
18. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. Happier or sadder? Happier, happier, happier!
ii. Thinner or fatter? No comment!
iii. Richer or poorer? Poorer. But I have complete control of my finances and can still cover everything and then some. Have to remind myself I'll be okay.
19. What do you wish you’d done more of? Reading! This is something I have to work on.
20. What do you wish you’d done less of? Last year I said sleeping, which is very funny to me. Mindless scrolling is the answer this year for sure.
21. How did you spend Christmas? My extended family did out potluck on the Saturday before which was lovely, and my boyfriend was nervous cause he hadn't met half of them before, and he'd never been to a big Christmas before, but it was really great. My granny is pretty far gone with her Alzheimer's though which was a cloud that hung over everything
My boyfriend's mum then flew down on Christmas Eve, and we had lunch on the day with just us and our mums, cause we're both only children of single parents, and I was a bit concerned it'd be awkward, but it wasn't, it was really nice. We cooked an amazing meal together and both our mums bought the dogs presents. and we watched Fantasia and it was great.
22. Did you fall in love this year? 
I did not know it was possible to be in love the way we are. I sold myself short for years. It feels like a waste of time, but god, I cannot believe how lucky I am to have it now.
This is what I wrote last year, at the end of a much more extended answer, since 2022 was pretty big for us. But this is still absolutely true, and I can't get over it still.
23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year? I don’t think so.
24. What was your favorite show? God, I didn't watch much that was new, but we rewatched 30 Rock because my boyfriend had never seen it and that was great.
25. What was the best book you read? The Bookbinder of Jericho by Pip Williams. Little Weirds by Jenny Slate. What You Are Looking for is in the Library by Michiko Aoyama.
26. What was your greatest musical discovery of the year? I went to see Stop Making Sense and it got me very into The Talking Heads. Loved finding corook's music as well.
27. What was your favorite film? 
Films that came out this year - Barbie, Oppenheimer, Across the Spiderverse,
 Films I watched for the first time - Amadeus, Stop Making Sense, Best In Show, The Great Escape, Glass Onion.
I also went to a cinema event where we marathoned all five Twilight movies in a row, and that ruled.
28. What was your favorite meal?
We've been doing a roast chicken every Sunday together which has been great.
It's what we did on Christmas too and I made a kickass pavlova. Think that's definitely been the best meal of the year.
29. What did you want and get?
For my partner to move here.
30. What did you want and not get?
To win the fucking lottery.
31. What did you do on your birthday and how old did you turn?
I turned 35. I had a work event that night so did nothing special. That was fine.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Said it before, but having more financial stability and freedom sure would be nice.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept of the year?
Comfortable. Embracing my body. Showing my tattoos. As sustainable as possible.
Wrote this last year. Stand by it.
34. What kept you sane?
My dogs. My friends. My boyfriend. Writing. Podcasts. Taylor Swift's music. Going to the movies.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you admire the most?
Caroline Klidonas is an actor I follow on TikTok whose work I just adore. I also love Pip Williams' writing so much, especially after seeing the play of A Dictionary of Lost Words.
36. What political issue stirred you the most? The genocide in Gaza.
37. Who did you miss? Sometimes I miss the family I lost in the divorce.
But mostly not.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
I honestly don't feel like I've met many new people? Which is weird.
39. What valuable life lesson did you learn this year?
Go after what you want.
40. What is a quote or song lyric that sums up your year?
