I already loved the Dewey decimal system but… this is what sold it to me 🥵 (kind of exposing myself as an AmySantiago breed of weirdo but eh)

Not sure I really wanna see Dewey anywhere in a library, but I think I can stomach this portrayal.

(I was going to make a post about "Why Tale Type 425 is my favorite", and then realized I should find a good explanation of what that means, first)
I've known about this index for decades, and it's one of my favorite things. It helps me think about my own "in the folk tradition" creations -- like stitching old pieces of fabric into a new quilt.
I didn't realize until I read this article, though, that it was updated and rearranged in 2008, to try and correct for the sexism and Eurocentrism (work's not done, but it's begun).
BTW, Melvil Dewey was pressured to resign from the American Library Association in 1905, for racism, antisemitism, and sexual harassment of women. So not only does the ATU motif index have more ogres, it also has less bigotry.

favorite thing i've learned in library school is that librarians hate the dewey decimal system and want to kill it. because it doesn't make sense, and it gives less granularity to non-white, non-european, and non-christian sections of the catalog.

ok y'all let's not get too excited but I think two consecutive days of 'try to write at least a little' finally woke up the beast.
like i don't have a concrete storyline anywhere but I did open several tabs and try to invent a new library classification system for the last 30 minutes starting at 12:15AM, and now I have an old problem (aware of how unqualified I am to categorize All The World's Knowledge) and a new problem (hey what does the calendar look like for this fictional world I threw together a 13-category classification system for.) Because that's going to determine the pacing of the H(istory/Historiography) section, which is currently H00: Dawn of recorded time to early antiquity H10: Late antiquity to Totally Not 1 BCE H20: Definitely Not 1 CE to Early Medieval H30: High Medieval to Present Day (printing press was invented somewhere in here) H40-H99: optimistically left open for future eras So now, as you can see, I need to determine what Major Historical Events formed the cutoff points of various eras in the history of this fictional world, and ooh hey this is why I never got anything finished ever because to bake an apple pie, you have to first invent the universe

i learned that the library career of the creator of the Dewey Decimal system, Melvil Dewey ended in disgrace, because of his groping of female librarians. Dewey also insisted on seeing photographs of the women before he would hire them, to determine if they were attractive or not (x)

one of the first things they teach you at library school is that melvil dewey was a heinous human being and that he sucked so fucking much that he got fired for being too sexist and racist by 1905's standards. but he was also apparently the first guy to go maybe we should organize libraries in a consistent way. which you would think someone else would have done by that time but apparently not

I got my book box from @shiftythrifting and it's perfect!
Tumblr media
I microwave cooking book, which is similar to one my mom has that she's said good things about. Plus I have ADHD and depression so maybe trying out some microwave meals will be easier? A book by Shirley Jackson, who I love, and Frankenstein, which I love. I don't know anything about Bolo or the author Keith Laumer, but old mass market paperbacks are always fun. And More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, which I haven't read but I know it's like a scary kid's book classic. And bonus points because it appears to be a library discard! I'll talk shit about Melville Dewey all day long but seeing there was a call number on the spine made my little library staffer heart happy.
Also I didn't realize until much later that beet poot was drawn on the side of the shipping box so thanks for that spooky surprise when I suddenly realized the box was staring at me.
