reading about kh3 gameplay mechanics on the khwiki (cuz i didnt do shit fuck with 99% of them when i played it) and like

the shotlock for oblivion is called ‘dawn eclipse’ in japanese, while oathkeepers is ‘sunset bright’

and i realized

kairi is associated with sunsets, which in kh (and in real life) are symbolic of endings

while riku is associated with dawn/sunrises, which are symbolic of new beginnings

also, dawn eclipse? like the dawn being eclipsed by something?

and sunset meaning the loss of (day)light, while sunrise means the return?

Thinking again about the end of CoM as a metaphor for repressing trauma vs facing it to heal and grow as a person and I really just

It really does feel intentional that what Sora goes through in CoM — losing his memories and almost losing himself — is a lot like what Sora describes being a heartless was like: “I was lost in the darkness. I couldn’t find my way. As I stumbled through the dark, I started forgetting things — my friends, who I was… The darkness almost swallowed me.”

Both halves of CoM are visual representations of what Sora and Riku each went through when they fell/almost fell to darkness in KH1. Riku’s memories are devoid of people because he cast them from his heart. Sora’s memories are full of people he forgets because he sacrificed his heart. And if we are supposed to see CoM as a near-death journey/an exploration of the unconscious, it is pretty on point for Marluxia to have a grim reaper aesthetic. Sora’s battling death.

Anyway, that’s why Data Sora’s decision to accept the loss of the memories of his friends and face that pain in Coded, live with it, is so significant.

Because that’s what the real Sora failed to do in the real Castle Oblivion. He never should’ve forgotten what happened there. He should’ve accepted those losses — and the pain attached to them — knowing that even if he can’t remember his friends, they remember him. Even if he doesn’t know them, he remembers caring about them. And even if he can’t recall specific memories, they’re not gone. He’ll remember them, some day. And in the meantime, the people he loves will help him shoulder the burden.

In a figurative sense, Sora has never left Castle Oblivion because he’s never accepted this pain. He has never moved on past this point, unlike Riku who decides to face Ansem, the representation of his trauma, and leave the castle, leave the darkness, to begin walking the road to dawn — the road to recovery. Sora’s still there, still under that dark night sky.

And now, after sacrificing himself again, there’s a very real chance he’s forgetting things and losing himself again, and surprise, surprise — look where he is.

Tied to a new character whose name means “night sky” to boot… Trauma has a way of biting us in the butt when we don’t deal with it properly. The past has a way of chaining us when we don’t move forward… Sora’s gonna have to do it right this time. He’s gonna have to face his pain and accept it if he wants to step forward into the light and exist again.

I have an idea that is in a similar vein to the theory that Sora was the Lich in KH3, but differs slightly - I think Sora can take on the darkness (or feed on the light possibly? I think its one of two) of others' hearts. This theory mostly hinges on how Sora takes on the pain of Ven, Roxas, and Xion. For some reason I can't find the screenshot, but I am in class so my searching skills aren't fully devoted at the moment. I'll run through cutscenes eventually, but basically I'm thinking of the scene where Sora says he is taking on the burden/pain of those in his heart.

Throughout the series, Sora has had a unique ability to hold others in his heart, it's the basis of the "Sora is the Lich" theory from kh3. This leads me to wonder about the actual mechanics of him taking on not only hearts, but specifically hearts in pain on the verge of death.

Sora isn't the only one in the series with hyperempathy, notably both Baldr and Xehanort both experience the ability that Sora has of feeling other's pain across unbelievable stretches. Both of these fell to darkness due to the extreme feelings they were experiencing- to take on another's pain is to eventually overwhelm yourself and fall. It's possible that Sora has yet to have this occur due to the nature of the hearts within him - namely Ventus and Kairi, the hearts of pure light.

When playing kh3, you do not have to use rage form until the forced moment at Kairi's death. Prior to that moment, it is entirely optional, almost as if Sora is able to hold himself back from falling into it. While his rage over Kairi's death would make sense after everything he had just done to save everyone, it's also notable that the only instance of forced rage form is after Ventus is gone from Sora's heart.

Many have commented on how sora's darkness has grown through the games, and I'm the past I've wondered if the growing darkness also aligning with how close we are to Ventus waking up are connected, and I'm beginning to believe firmly that they are. I think that Sora is able to draw on the dominant power of the hearts around him in order to maintain balance of light and dark within his heart. As Ven grew closer to waking up, his heart of pure light was strengthening and healing- and in tandem sora's darkness grew. He took on the hearts of Roxas and Xion, both of which would hold some darkness, which makes me wonder if their hearts were helping contribute darkness to keep sora's in balance while holding Ventus's.

If someone with the hyperempathy only takes on the darkness of others' hearts, then they are more susceptible to being overcome by darkness, but if Sora has been slowly taking on both dark and Ventus's light, then it could explain why he has kept from overloading with darkness thus far despite all his trauma. "My friends are my power," what if they really are - what if Sora can literally draw light or darkness from those around him. Sorry if this was rambling or incoherent, I haven't slept.

Alone with Sora, Riku had said, "We'll be the darkness." Since the realm of light was safe, Sora carried him down to the beach. It was just them together in the dark margin. "I was jealous of you," but it was way more than that. Something almost unspoken— a feeling hiding in plain sight.

That was the only time it was them alone, but they managed to find a way out— a door of light appeared.

Like shooting star, they returned— falling through the ocean. Kairi, Mickey, Donald and Goofy, waved them over.

But it was the night of a real shooting star that he made a promise— a promise Sora must have forgotten, but it was still real to him. "What if a shooting star hits the islands?" said Sora at only four years of age. "If a shooting star comes this way, I'll protect you." Riku told him confidently, swinging his toy sword before giving him that necklace, he never took off.

Sora is his light, his strength comes from him. He was going to protect his most precious person. Like another promise he made, "I wanna be strong one day. Like that kid who left—he went to the outside world. I bet he's really strong now..." he told the stranger at five years at age, "I bet it's out there somewhere. The strength that I need... Strength to protect what matters."

But he has the strength now, Riku knows that. All those memories proves that.

He will find him.

ok but Riku and Ansem having a heart-to-heart (ha) while possessed about how similar they are.

Xemnas recognizing Riku and that their pasts are basically the same (using darkness to leave their prison surrounded by water), even if he barely remembers the time on the islands from his Xehanort half and even the Terra part recognizes him a little from the bequeathing so it coalesces into that strange familiarity that you get from someone you met in a dream.

YMX knowing about Riku from time travel shenanigans but it’s not until they actually meet for the first time in Traverse Town that he’s like “oh” and starts to tug at both of their insecurities because “Riku is just like me” so he knows how to get under Riku’s skin.

Even the old man sees something of himself in the silver-haired boy standing before him in the Keyblade Graveyard; the same curiosity about the world in his oddly familiar soft green eyes. He also sees someonething else in the kindness Riku shows toward his friends, the quiet determination to always be there for them and protect them when they need it, especially Sora. Reminiscent of someone from another’s memory he holds, one from long ago.
