#776 BoloorMovieMania rocks !!!!
Tumblr media
Holiday season and visit to theatre to watch a movie is part of our family tradition now. Its time to share some funny memories related to it.
Year 1985. Month July. 2 movies had released which was making news. Ram teri Ganga Maili was released which was a Raj Kapoor movie. It had great reviews but was marked “Only for Adults” due to some obvious scenes of new comer Mandakini. Another movie was an old Kamal Hasan movie Kalyanaraman which was released again. Mom and dad wanted to see the former and Seema the later. They left me in my neighbours house and went to watch the movie. Seema went with her friends. Our neighbours had 2 kids of almost my age, Rohit and Roshan. They all left for movie at 3 PM. I played cricket with Rohit and Roshan till 6 PM and played some indoor games till 8 PM . When mom, dad and Seema returned, I shouted at them asking why they came so late. They told movie was a long one and had some silly reason to explain. I was filled with anger as they didn’t bring any chocolate for me as well. Prema aunty who was our neighbour went to her kitchen and got 4 chocolates. I settled down post that
Year 1985. Month August.  I was in 3rd standard. Life was normal as usual. St Charles school had its charm. We used to have cricket matches played during PT period which was so much fun. Class teacher was Agnes. She was a bit strict but was amazing in teaching. Her son Lawrence was studying in our class as well. We had created 2 teams within our class. Tinu Thomas was the captain of one team and Ashit the other. We played best of 3 matches. Each team had won 1 match. I did fairly well with ball. I had a short runup but could generate good speed with the tennis ball. I was used as death bowler by my captain Ashit. We both were very close friends on and off the cricket field. His dad was a doctor who was a very good friend of my dad. Final match was scheduled during mid of August. I was thrilled and waiting for the match to start. Me and my sister Seema used to visit home for lunch. It was about 10 min walking distance.  One fine day, when we were having lunch, mom and Seema told me in chorus to bunk the 2nd half of the day. I literally stopped having food. My hand frozen between the plate and mouth without an inch moving on either side. I was shocked more than surprised especially when mom asked me to do this. She used to be pretty strict. I just focussed on my lunch till it got over. Post that I told mom that teacher would scold if I bunk the class as Agnes madam had kept unit test the same day as well. Another reason was that final match was about to be played as well. I didn’t want to miss that at any cost.
I finally asked the reason to bunk class. Mom smilingly told that we all need to go to watch new Movie Meri Jung. After the previous month incident, they didn’t want to leave me alone.   I used to understand hindi as it was our 2nd language in school. I told instantaneously that Agnes Madam would have real BATTLE (meaning of Jung) with me if I bunked. They were not in mood to listen. I was more upset as I would miss the match. We took an auto and moved towards the theatre. We had to go via school to reach theatre. I recall hiding behind the auto seat so that nobody from school could watch me. Movie was fun. I loved it then and watched it multiple times later as well. Anil Kapoor was simply brilliant and so was Amrish Puri. Whenever we watched movie, rest of the day would just be spent in reviewing the movie. I didn’t want the next day to come at all. It started of by Ashit staring at me. He asked why I didn’t come to school. He was upset I couldn’t be part of the match. It took some time and infact a couple of days to cool him down  😊 . Agnes madam called me and asked the same question. I told that I had loose motion. She suspected that I was lying. She told again to tell the truth else she would punish me. She wanted to set an example that no kids should take leave for silly reasons. I again told that I was unwell post lunch. She stared at me just like Amrish Puri stared at Anil Kapoor in court scene of Meri Jung movie. I was let go after that. I settled down. I was never so scared in school . “Zindagi har kadam ek nati jung hain son” haunted me for rest of the week. That song of Meri Jung movie looked like it was made just for me .
Year 1995. My XII standard exam was about to get over. Before going for final exam, I told all at home that lets go to watch Bombay movie by Mani Ratnam once I come back. I told Seema if she could go to theatre and book tickets. She and her friend Ganga went to Urvashi theatre. They found out that tickets were sold for next one week. Seema’s friend Ganga was pretty gutsy lady. She grabbed Seema’s hand and went inside the theatre. When watchman asked , Ganga told that she knows owner of the theatre. Watchman got a bit scared and opened the door. They directly went to main office room. They both asked for 4 tickets without a blink of the eye. Officer gave it without blinking his eye as well. We watched the movie later that day during night show.  Movie was great but the way Ganga and Seema grabbed tickets still brings a smile to my face.
Since then, almost after every year’s final exam, I watched some movie or the other. I didn’t watch any movie when I was in XII standard. But post engineering entrance exam , I watched 17 movies in 2 months. My dad’s record was even bigger one. During his college holidays in Bangalore, he watched 30 movies in 30 days. Infact He has even watched 3 movies in a day. He used to have poster of yesteryear heroine Sadhana in his hostel room. He used to say that all his college mates used to come to his room to have a look at Sadhana’s poster before every exam. Mom was a huge Dharam fan during her college days. Seema started watching movies with friends right from 4th standard onwards. Even 2 days before my marriage, I took my cousins to watch Swades. Mom and dad laughed at my idea but didn’t say a thing as they knew its in the blood. We the Boloorians area a crazy gang. We study when we study but when we watch movie, literally ghost gets into our bodies and soul.
As far as this holiday season goes, its HUD HUD Daabang. Keep rocking !!! KAMAAAAL karte ho BOLOOR ji 😊

Anwer Zahidi
Anwer Zahidi   (born July 9, 1946) is a Pakistani Urdu author[1] of more than twelve books of poetry, short stories, travelogue and translations. After completing his graduation in science from Punjab University, Anwer Zahidi received a degree of MBBS from Nishtar Medical College, Multan in 1970.
Career
A practicing physician by profession, Anwer Zahidi has carved out a place for himself in the world of letters. He is a short story writer, a poet and translator. His collection of verse Sunaehre Dinon Ki Shairi (Poetry of the Golden Days—1985) was followed by Azab-e Shaher Panah (The Torture of the Ramparts) collection of short stories, in 1991. New collection of poems Meri Aankhen Samadar and short stories Mausam Jang Ka Kahani Muhabbat Ki are under publication. Dr. Zahidi is not only a creative writer but also a literary critic. His collection of critical writings on the world's great literary figures, called Bazyaft, has just been completed. Zahidi has also made a name for himself as a translator. His knowledge of Persian, which he mastered during three-year stay in Iran, is of invaluable assistance to him in his translations from Persian.
He also translated Hermann Hesse in Barishon Ka Mausam (The Rainy Season) and Carl Jung's Psychology of the Unconscious for the National Language Authority. Besides these highly technical books he has also translated Arabic, Turkish and Latin American literary masterpieces. One of his masterpieces in the field of translation is Pablo Neruda's autobiography, which is certainly an invaluable addition to Urdu letters. Mumtaz Mufti, one of the leading literary figures in Pakistan, entitled his review of Anwer Zahidi’s literary work, “Part-time poet” - implying that this work was somehow secondary to his principle vocation of a physician at a leading hospital in Islamabad. In fact, “Full-time poet and part-time doctor” would have been more accurate. Since graduation from Nishtar Medical College, Multan (University of Punjab) in 1970, he has practiced medicine, first in the military (1971–73), then as a private practitioner (1973–76), and subsequently in public hospitals in two countries, Iran (1976–80) and Pakistan (1980 to date). Yet, ever since 1968, when one of his poems got published in a reputed Urdu magazine, Nairang-e-Khyal, literature has been his primary occupation.
Exposure to great Western literature - in English translations – led him to an interest in translating favorite pieces from English into Urdu. Over time, Anwer zahidi has translated some of the greatest writers of various languages into Urdu. These include Tolstoy, Hesse, Neruda, Dickens, and Pessoa. From Western literature he moved gradually towards other great writers including the Kirghiz epic poet, Manas, and most importantly modern Persian poets like Neema Yosheej, Ahmad Shamlo, and Frogh Furrukhzad. Translating Iranian poetry (directly from Persian) into Urdu was enormously edifying. These writers are the pioneers of the new literary movement of Iran; they have broken the metric rigidity of the traditional Persian Ghazal and revolutionized its poetic vision, and have had a deep impact upon the literary movements in the sub-continent. The study of contemporary Persian literature completely revolutionized his poetic diction, including the infusion of elements of rebellion in early romantic formulas.
Although Anwer Zahidi is known in South Asia primarily as a “modern” poet (Nazam-e-Azad), some of his most intense work is in the genre of abstract short stories. They enable a mode of expression that is difficult to incorporate into the poetic structure. Reflecting the nature of injustice and absurdity in contemporary existence, these short stories tend to take an acrid view of life. Prose writing also led him into translations of prose and non-fiction, including memoirs (Neruda) essays (Hesse), psychology (Jung).

The very best of the Showman
Subhash ghai has been one of the most commercially successful directors in the last quarter of the previous century.  From Meenakshi to Madhuri to Manisha to Mahima, he had a penchant for M for his leading ladies.Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor and Dilip Kumar have been the actors he collaborated the most with.
Nine of his best films (since its is 72nd bday today) in my opinion:
9) Saudagar(1991): The film brought back two legends of Bollywood together after 30 years. It was a silver jubilee hit and gave the Nepali beauty Manisha, a perfect Bollywood platform. Ilu ilu and Imli ka boota were chartbusters for weeks. It was the showman’s take on Romeo and Juliet. It got ghai his only filmfare for direction.
youtube
8) Kalicharan(1976): After being rejected seven times by different producers, ghai’s script was liked by NN Sippy, despite him telling the producer that it has been rejected by lot of people. The rest, as they say, is history. It was such a blockbuster that it was made into all four South Indian languages.
youtube
7) Taal(1999): As a producer he introduced film insurance policy in bollywood first time with his film 'Taal' and first one to initiate banks to finance movies. Anil Kapoor, AkshayeKhanna, Aishwarya Rai, Amrish Puri, Alok Nath, AR Rahman, Anand Bakshi: with so many As, I believe this is the reason he called his film’ A Subhash ghai film’ instead of his earlier version Subhash ghai’s.
6) Karma(1986): Subhash Ghai made Karma at the time when Bollywood was going through one of its worst phase as business was hitting at low due to lack of content, low production value and video piracy. It was first movie where Dilip Kumar and Nutan worked together and only movie where Dilip Kumar and Naseeruddin Shah worked together. But it was Anupam Kher who stole the show in Karma as Dr. Dang, one of the most remembered villains of Bollywood. Anupam Kher achieved star status with Karma and critics praised him the way he acted in front of the legend like Dilip Kumar.Karma did not win any Filmfare Award because Filmfare Awards were not organized in that year.
5) Hero(1983): Its  another brave attempt of Subhash Ghai because in the era of action movies he made a love story with newcomers in his first production. Subhash Ghai used Pakistani folk singer Rehsma’s voice for the song ‘Lambi Judai’ and made a huge publicity of it on radio channels which also attracted the attention towards movie. Anuradha Paudawala also earned recognition for her song ‘Tu mera hero hai’ from Hero and was nominated first time for Best Female Playback Singer in Filmfare Awards. With Hero, Subhash Ghai got the status of ‘Showman’ for the way he launched the newcomers like Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Shehshadri and made them stars.
4) Meri Jung(1985): Subhash Ghai directed courtroom drama Meri Jung for producer N. N. Sippy who produced Subhash Ghai’s directorial debut Kaalicharan. Meri Jung was the first hit of Anil Kapoor as a solo hero which also gave the confidence to other producers to sign him as a leading actor. Anil Kapoor once said in an interview that it was after the success of Meri Jung when he decided to settle down and proposed his girlfriend Sunita and got married.
youtube
 3) Karz(1980): Karz is one of the finest films of Subhash Ghai’s career as he took the risk of making a movie on the theme of reincarnation which was not a love story but a revenge drama inspired from Hollywood movie The Reincarnation of Peter Proud.  A semi- hit when first released, Karz is a movie considered ahead of its times by many. It, however , was once of the most inspired films for a generation of filmmakers altogether. It has been remade into all four South-Indian languages as well. The legendary duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s music is definitely one their top 5 albums and rightly won them the filmfare award despite having won consecutively for the previous 4 years. Simi as the vamp was nominated for the Fimlfare Award of Best Supporting Actress. Simi Garewal was reluctant to do the role of Kamini but she did that role after the persuasion of Subhash Ghai. Prem Nath needs a special mention  despite not having a single dialogue.
2) Ram Lakhan(1989): It  was a typical Subhash Ghai masala entertainer which has all the ingredients of a typical Bollywood entertainer like drama, emotion, romance, comedy and music. It was the first movie where Anupam Kher played a comic role and won Filmfare Award of Best Comic Actor alongwith Satish Kaushik. Rakhee gave power packed performance in a well written role and won Filmfare Award of Best Supporting Actress. Subhash ghai released an 8-page ad in Movie magazine before Ram Lakhan released.
youtube
1) Khal Nayak(1993): The popular pairing of Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff that featured in the director’s previous films, “Karma” and “Ram Lakhan” was abandoned and Ghai, instead, chose Sanjay Dutt to essay a role that normally would have been done by Anil Kapoor.  The audiences ran in their droves to witness some of the Madhuri Dixit screen magnetism. In every scene, she holds you captive with her stunning beauty, demanding screen presence, expressive acting and excellent dancing skills. The song "Choli ke Peeche Kya Hai" picturized on Madhuri Dixit in Subhash Ghai's Khalnayak' was a runaway hit, but as many as 41 political parties created a storm when they opposed the lyrics.
