May (2001)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tumblr media
God punishes neurodivergent woman with disabilities for wanting people to like her.
This movie was interesting, not only for its off putting, yet touching ending, but also the journey of horror we on on with the protagonist. May wants to be understood and seen, but the people close to always fall short and head for the hills. Something many people have experienced before, setting up the audience to be empathetic to her situation.
It’s hard to say where the shared experience ends and the morbid curiosity begins. Regardless, May is a unsettling and gruesome tale about being an outsider, and the lengths some people will go to fit in.
Watch this if:
you like spooky dolls in your horror
body horror is your also jam
Similar titles:
Frankenstein (1818) (weird guy makes a person)
American Mary (2012) (weird girl cuts up people)

Nemesis (1992)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
I sat down with Nemesis knowing it was a cheap Terminator clone but for the longest time, I thought I’d been misled. It all comes together in the end but for the bulk of its running time, this is a confusing mess. Needlessly overcomplicated, with pointless action scenes, useless characters, and twists that are never surprising, it has a couple of meme-worthy moments and some intentional laughs but I wager you’ll be bored for the most of it.
In the near future, androids are commonplace and live among us. Alex Raine (Olivier Gruner) is a cyborg assassin/bounty hunter for the LAPD who, after narrowly surviving a dangerous mission, decides to call it quits. His old boss, Commissioner Farnsworth (Tim Thomerson) calls upon Alex for one final assignment. His former lover, Jared (Marjorie Monaghan), is an android who has stolen valuable information from the government. They need Alex to track her down.
The movie begins with androids trying to kill Alex. After grievous injuries, he's rebuilt and begins questioning his humanity. On top, we get heaps of double dealings and shady government ops, rebel groups, political machinations and all sorts of detective thriller aspects. None of these add anything to the story. Do you want to know what this movie is really about? It’s this cyborg cop, Alex, who learns his bosses are actually androids bent on taking over the world by replacing every human being with robot duplicates. He only discovers this after they’ve sent him on a mission to find his former girlfriend who has discovered the truth. There. See how easy that was to explain? There was no need to rip off Escape from New York by having the police chief implant a bomb inside Alex’s arm (he’s got a deadline to meet otherwise, he dies). It’s just Invasion of the Body Snatchers but with Cylons instead of aliens.
Forget all the back-and-forth between Alex, his boss, the government, the people who believe sending in a single agent who isn’t “with the cause” is a bad idea and all that. All this does is leave us with our heads spinning - and not in a good way. Maybe some of the other cuts of the film are easier to follow. I doubt it.
The plot is simultaneously so convoluted it’s impenetrable to anyone who hasn’t read a synopsis and so utterly lacking in any innovation or surprises you know exactly how everything will go. You'll predict everything because you've seen what this movie wants to do elsewhere: among others, we have Blade Runner, Robocop, and finally, Terminator. At first, it’s a knockoff of that last one in subtle ways. A robot gets damaged in a way that’s reminiscent of the T-101 so that we can see their one robotic eye. In a later scene, an android gets its legs blown off and has to crawl across the floor as if reaching for Sarah Connor. Once you FINALLY reach the end, you really see the signs. I’m not talking about the discount stop-motion work with the robot skeleton; I mean the overall plot. The baddies may be androids… but they’re just robots who don’t look like robots and are here to infiltrate us.
"Ah! So it’s a more cerebral version of Terminator then?"
Well, it WANTS to be but more than once, it just gives up. Nemesis knows no one cares about what it has to say. Anyone tracking this one down just wants to see explosions, gore and a bit of nudity thrown in. Lucky for us, it checks all the boxes... but by the time it does, we're too late. Any enjoyment you might’ve drawn from this low-rent would-be sci-fi thriller has been squashed by utter boredom. (On Blu-ray, May 18, 2019)

The thing about ML’s voice is I feel like a lot of it is a fake effect- exaggerated twang and nasal, teeth clenched to capture her audience that falls for the “authentic” tough girl act. It seems she’s leaned into it more as time goes on to solidify her fan base. I was floored listening to the 2010 Kennedy Center Honors (watched it to hear No Doubt) and heard ML singing “Silver Wings” on the Merle Haggard tribute. It was beautiful and sounded nothing like her voice that we’re normally subjected to. I was shocked I tell you. Disclaimer: In all fairness Gwen uses affectations in her voice too to go with the vibe on certain songs and her “plain” singing voice is often prettier too (see Love is Alive)
Gwen just knocked that Kennedy Center Honors out of the park. I still go watch it randomly and revel in her talent. Paul McCartney was smart to pick her/ND as one of the performances.
I find MLs regular voice okay, but underwhelming. But her Loretta Lynn knockoff recording voice is awful to me. Just awful.

Pre-order Night of the Demons 2.
It's Halloween! The gates of Hull House have creaked open once again and Angela (Amelia Kinkade) is waiting for her treats. When a group of rambunctious teens take refuge in the foreboding funeral home to escape the law, they soon realize their grave error.

hey, do you have any book suggestion about queer activism and lesbian history? I wanted to start reading more about it. thank you if you do!
hi❣ as you might be able to deduce from the types of historical stuff i tend to post, i'm most of all interested in primary sources. so from my own reading experience i can't really recommend you academic, modern nonfiction books that compile lesbian/sapphic history from many different sources. the books i've read have almost exclusively been published diaries of lesbian/queer people from the past, such as the lesbian crushes trilogy by natasha holme or we both laughed in pleasure by lou sullivan. as well as the diaries and letters of more mainstream figures like virginia woolf, frida kahlo, or emily dickinson - which,, depending on the editor and publisher, usually don't zoom in on the queer aspects of their lives. i can, however, recommend and link my favourite lesbian/sapphic periodicals, magazines, and other publications. you can read countless of them online for free! i can also link some google drive archives that include a large number of books on queer activism, lesbian/sapphic history, and other lgbt topics - again, i haven't read most of these back to back myself, but i've heard good things, and at least you'll have a place you can find many of them if you get recommendations from someone/somewhere else! 💙 periodicals, magazines, etc.: 💕common lives/lesbian lives 💕the lesbian tide 💕come out! 💕the gay liberator 💕the rest of jstors lgbt collection 💕outweek magazine 💕transsisters: the journal of transsexual feminism 💕queer zine archive project google drive archives of books, essays, etc. (with examples of some famous titles you can find inside): 💕1 - odd girls and twilight lovers: a history of lesbian life in twentieth-century america by lillian faderman (1991) - transgender history by susan stryker (2008) 💕2 - bisexuality: a critical reader by merl storr (1999) - straight: the surprisingly short history of heterosexuality by hanne blank (2012) 💕3 - odd girls and twilight lovers: a history of lesbian life in twentieth-century americaby lillian faderman (1991) - the persistent desire: a femme-butch reader by joan nestle (1992) - boots of leather, slippers of gold: the history of a lesbian community by madeline davis and elizabeth kennedy (1993) - transgender warriors: making history from joan of arc to dennis rodman by leslie feinberg (1996) hope you find something to your liking! i have a lot more resources as well, if you end up wanting more of something specific!

Do you listen to genres outside of metal often? If so what are some of your favorite artists
Yeah I listen to punk a ton, just as much as metal probably, I've been really into punk longer than I've been really into metal, I like Germs, D-CON, Restarts, Arson Anthem, Doom, Discharge, Dead Kennedys, Sailing Camp, Negative Approach, Fang, Flipper, Black Flag to name a few. My mom also mostly rasied me on a lot of 60's/70's stuff growing up that I still listen to like The Doors, Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Lynyrd Skynyrd and all that stuff. I also like a lot of blues and even some country believe it or not, stuff like Lightnin' Hopkins, Steeldrivers, Johnny Cash, Burl Ives, Robert Johnson, The Animals, Merle Haggard, stuff like that, I'm real picky about country though I think a lot of it is garbage because like a lot of genres made by poor people/poc it has its gentrifier and trend artists sooooo I stick to the good stuff :-)
