Do you think mewtwo may be touch starved? (I don’t mean anything gross or perverted!!!) more like hugs or cuddles and stuff
Hi, Anon! Yes, I do! I think Mewtwo has gone so long without positive touch (battling doesn't count) that he could be suffering from touch starvation. He probably wouldn't know what to do if given a hug!
Disclaimer: I’m not a doctor. Please don’t use this to diagnose yourself.
We humans need positive touch. Positive contact causes the brain to release oxytocin, which makes you feel good. It gives you a sense of comfort, security and satisfaction. People who don’t get enough positive physical touch can become stressed, anxious or depressed. As discussed in this other question, prolonged stress and anxiety can be detrimental to your health, even triggering PTSD.
This reaction to touch starts at birth. It’s why doctors have new mothers hold their babies to their chest for skin-to-skin contact. Mothers are encouraged to hold and comfort their babies often to promote healthy development.
In the animated films, nobody holds Mewtwo when he pops out of the tank. Nobody touches him. The only physical contact he presumably has at Team Rocket is having his armor put on. The only positive contact I recall him having is Ash Ketchum carrying him to Purity Spring to be healed. It’s notable that Mewtwo regains the strength to fight off Team Rocket and the courage to explore the world after this happens.
Mewtwo’s personality may align with someone suffering from touch starvation. It’s common to have feelings of loneliness, depression, decreased life satisfaction, anxiety and stress if touch starved.
Or it could be that Mewtwo is touch averse. Perhaps he’s never liked being touched. Maybe he has a sensory processing issue. Or perhaps not being held or touched from “birth” resulted in him developing a touch aversion. Our tendency to engage in physical touch like hugging is often a product of early childhood experiences, so perhaps because Mewtwo isn't raised being hugged, he grows up to dislike it. How touch aversion is experienced and expressed in real life is highly individual, so take all this with a grain of salt.
All of this is to say that it’s an interesting issue to explore when considering Mewtwo’s character. There are many different ways you can characterize Mewtwo with regards to positive physical contact!
Thanks for the interesting ask! Sources under the cut.

It'd be nice for OG Mewtwo to be confirmed male in the Japanese version like he was in the English.
“As expected. Even Mewtwo cannot stand solitude. He needed companions.”
– said by Giovanni to Domino, in reference to why there are clones in Mewtwo’s hideout, Mewtwo I am here [Japanese]
Not sure how accurate the quote is.
Tumblr media
Did they really refer to Mewtwo as Mister and Sir in the Japanese version of Mewtwo Returns?
Tumblr media
Again is that real?
EDIT: Thanks to a friend I've confirmed that Mewtwo has indeed referred to as male in Japanese properties. Specifically the original Mewtwo. The fact that the Mewtwo in the Detective Pikachu movie is male and based on OG Mewtwo only reinforces him being male.
He also has a male telepathic voice which he projects with his amazing mind meaning he perceives himself as male internally. He's a boy. If you actually me one more time People In the Internet and tell me Mewtwo is genderless I'm going to punch you in the throat. Yes, all of you. It's only in the games that Mewtwo and most legends are genderless (or more accurately in Japan, gender unknown). The anime and the games are separate continuities.

Video
It’s my Mewtwo AMV, but in shortened version. @ritabuuk made me an abridged version which I can submit to places with a shorter time limit :) I agree that there’s a benefit to not having to wait one whole minute until Mewtwo appears on screen.
Song: Insomnium - One for Sorrow
The full version, with soft-subtitles for the lyrics available if you aren’t as fluent in death metal, can be viewed on our AMV archive.

Mewtwo’s origins in the games and first movie
Back when the Kanto region in Pokemon was supposed to be the real Kanto in Japan, the journals in the Pokemon Mansion state that Mew gave live birth to Mewtwo on February 6th of an unspecified year (though my headcanon places it at some point in the 1990s given how Red and Green started development in 1990 and released in ‘96 even though it was delayed from a 1995 release, that being the reason why the start date for copyrights and/or trademarks in Pokemon is 1995 rather than 1996). This was before Pokemon breeding or eggs were introduced and is like how cloning works in real life.
The first Pokemon movie instead depicts Mewtwo as being grown in a test tube like the pop culture idea for clones depicts them in. Maybe it was so they didn’t have to show the horrific gene-splicing that turned Mewtwo into what it is today. Just so you know, there are technically two Japanese versions of the first movie, and no, I’m not talking about the CGI remake that I can’t stand to look at even in still frames. The original theatrical release was edited for home video to add CGI in some shots (like an opening door) and added an origin story for Mewtwo where it was seen when it was young. It looked so cute and used to be so sweet. It also explained the reason why Dr. Fuji would work with Giovanni (it’d benefit them both because Dr. Fuji would clone his dead daughter and Giovanni would get the most powerful Pokemon).
4Kids did fully dub this extended bit of the prologue, which added ten more minutes to the prologue and made it twenty minutes long, but due to controversy surrounding cloning, they chose not to put it in the theatrical release of their dub of the movie or even the DVD release of it. Instead, the ONLY time the dub of the extended ten minutes was released in DVD Region 1 (North America, which includes at least the United States and Canada) was as bonus material in the DVD of Mewtwo Returns, the made for TV feature length anime special that’s a sequel to the first movie. It was direct to video in the US and it’s probably safe to say that it’s been out of print for twenty years at this point.

Hey, I'm kinda back, tryna get back into doing art, here is something I tried to do...gave up on it though as I was not happy with the angle or position, tried to have em in a slightly slouched position with an angry glare but it just wasn't going my way so I don't care to finish it but I might as well just pump it out so here ya go
Honestly it's been hard tryna do art as I felt I have been getting worse, not better but I'm told practice makes perfect even though I have my doubts

If the other half of my favorite 💚🐢 cartoon series’ voice actors are going to be at NY Comic Con next weekend, I’m going to be extremely disappointed that I hadn’t planned for the event early on in the year. I’m still bummed out about that last minute Life Adulting Crap got in the way of my last year’s Friday plans to AnimeNYC, and I ironically dodged the Omicron outbreak bullet. It’s getting harder for me to mentally prepare to step outside my niche since the pandemic kept everyone indoors. I haven’t forgotten those grueling failures when I missed getting Bryce Papenbrook’s autograph in 2018 and last year. So I can’t be sure if a Vox Machina panel will also make me miss my long awaited desire after June 2006.

Everyone talks about mewtwo having some trauma but what trauma exactly does he have? Is it abandonement trauma or something?
Great question, Anon! Apologies ahead of time for the essay. :)
First I want to point out that I have zero professional cred to diagnose anyone with any form of trauma. I realize we’re talking about a fictional character here, but I want to make this disclaimer anyway just in case someone takes this as advice about themselves or others. This is for fun, nothing more!
I def think you’re on the right track about abandonment. I think it's possible Mewtwo (in the anime canon) suffers from loss, traumatic grief, neglect, violence and physical abuse. Loss and traumatic grief from losing Amber and finding out he's a clone,* neglect from not being cared for properly when “born," being left for long periods of time in his holding cell and trapped in the armor with Team Rocket, and violence/physical abuse when forced to fight for Giovanni.** It’s important to note that all this happens to Mewtwo when he’s quite young.
A child’s brain is particularly vulnerable to traumatic events. During traumatic experiences, the brain is in a heightened state of stress and fear-related hormones are activated. When a developing mind is in a state of chronic trauma, this stress can change the emotional, behavioral and cognitive functioning of the individual in order to maintain survival. These experiences can have a huge impact on a person’s physical and mental health over time. I think we see a lot of this happening to Mewtwo in Mewtwo Strikes Back. Mewtwo might seem like he's in control, but he's in constant survival mode, and I think it affects how his mind develops.
Results from this kind of trauma vary, but those with traumatic stress symptoms often have difficulty regulating their behaviors and emotions, especially when still young. They can be aggressive, impulsive, afraid of new situations, clingy, etc. They may blame themselves for the trauma that happened to them, suffer from depression, have various addictions, struggle with sleeping, show regression in functioning and behavior, etc.
Someone with trauma won’t necessarily show all of these symptoms. I think we see the lack of impulse control and aggression in Mewtwo in MSB quite a bit. The clinginess, depression and fear I think are more evident in Mewtwo Returns.
This is definitely an imperfect description of how trauma may possibly affect Mewtwo’s personality, but hopefully it offers some examples for you, Anon! Thanks for writing in!

*It’s true that Mewtwo is forced to forget Amber, but I believe that he wakes up still in the throes of grief he'd felt when he went under.
**While Mewtwo fights for Giovanni and Team Rocket willingly and technically is an adult, he’s still mentally very young, and Giovanni takes advantage of that.
