Bengiyo's Queer Cinema Syllabus
A few months back I was chatting with @bengiyo when the subject of queer cinema came up (unsurprising considering…ya know, the whole being BL buddies thing). As a semi-recent queerness realizer, and a Certified Baby Gay(™), Ben took it upon himself to share a post between himself and @shortpplfedup that inspired @the-conversation-pod and which also included a Completely Hypothetical Queer Cinema Syllabus Build Up to BL for Baby Gays. According to @bengiyo this started as a thought experiment.
But, unfortunately or…fortunately? for him, I constantly crave queer media, and @waitmyturtles and her Old GMMTV Challenge have inspired me to try my hand at working my way through this syllabus. I cannot guarantee that I will finish all these films. I have no idea how long it would even take, but I wanted to at least try!
I have been saying I would do this for months now, but I am inundated with BL content, and getting more every day, so I have been pushing it to the side. BUT! This evening a local movie theater played The Birdcage (1996) and I went and bought tickets and decided now was as good a time as any to get this started, I am hoping to take a page out of Turtle’s book and write notes/thoughts on the movies I end up watching. Forgive me the long winded introduction, but I figured some context would be nice if this ends up being a thing I stick with. So without further ado…
The Birdcage (1996) [Comedy]
Syllabus Unit 6: Gems
Tumblr media
Summary: A gay cabaret owner and his drag queen companion agree to put up a false straight front so that their son can introduce them to his fiancée's right-wing moralistic parents.
Characters:  Armand: Gay cabaret owner, played by Robin Williams  Arnold: Drag queen partner, played by Nathan Lane Val: Armand’s son, played by Dan Futterman Agador: Armand and Arnold's maid? friend? live in slutty pool boy? played by Hank Azaria Katharine: Val's biological mother, played by Christine Baranski
Overall Reflection
This is a film I had never seen before. Hell, I didn’t even know it existed until around the time Ben shared his syllabus, and someone reblogged a scene from it that ended up on my dashboard. This was an interesting film to experience in theaters, because while watching with an audience made the funny bits funnier, there were also moments that I absolutely did not read as funny that other people did, and I didn’t know how I felt about that.
This film is set primarily in South Beach, Florida and partly in a drag club, which meant that the only thing I could think about whenever the drag club was on screen was Palace, the gay bar, drag brunch, queer club spot in Miami. On the other funny casual note, as a Floridian I feel seen by the moment where Katharine calls and says she’s going to be late, and it zooms out to show she is stuck at the bridge. Real.
I feel like the majority of gay media I have consumed in my life very much centers around two very masculine characters. So it was really nice to watch a story that involved more femme characters, and that the femme characters were not left as the butt of the joke. Which I recognize might be ironic considering this is a comedy and therefore there are jokes abound. But, when you compare the femme character in something like Legally Blonde, to the femme characters here, they are allowed to be dramatic, and they are allowed to trip and fall, but the love that Armand has for Arnold is palpable, they squabble and they get annoyed at each other, and they hurt each other, but they are partners, and they love each other too, and it shows throughout the film.
This sounds fucked up, I guess, but I love the undercurrent of pain that is threaded throughout the story. The way that Val starts off seeming like he is very content with the way he grew up, the parents that he had. The way that Val feels so so loved by his Dads, and he hurts them anyway. Because he is scared, because he loves Barbara and he knows that she is good, and that her parents aren’t, and that he has to hide his family. But in making them hide who they are, he is hurting them and at first you can see and feel the ways that Armand is trying to rebel against it. You can tell that initially he is angry, disappointed, upset, incredulous:
“Yes, I wear foundation. Yes, I live with a man. Yes, I'm a middle- aged fag. But I know who I am, Val. It took me twenty years to get here, and I'm not gonna let some idiot senator destroy that. Fuck the senator, I don't give a damn what he thinks.”

It is one of my favorite lines in the film. Because Val needs to be called out on exactly what he is asking his father to do for him. Because Armand's pain is visceral in this moment. But Armand loves his son and so eventually he relents.
Arnold’s presence and importance in Val’s life are constantly disregarded and he is allowed to be upset, and Armand is allowed to constantly put his son’s engagement and wedding in jeopardy to prioritize his partner and his partner’s feelings, because Arnold is a part of this family, and to hide him away is unfair.
I certainly had to grapple with some complicated emotions around the character of Val. I could understand where he was coming from, that he loves his fiancee and that their families have to meet, and that it is almost certainly physically safer for everyone if his parents are not visibly and obviously queer around the ultra conservative moralist senator. But the ways he ends up exhibiting casual disdain, anxiety, and judgment around the aspects of his parents’ home, his parents’ friends, his parents’ themselves makes me kinda hate him a little bit. It is hard for me not to see Val as entitled, not to consider him low-key dickish, because of how frequently he seems to get annoyed and disappointed that Armand and Arnold are not acting straight enough, that their house isn’t straight enough, that their family isn’t straight enough. But the film does not shy away from the mental toll it takes.
Were there aspects of the film itself I didn’t like? Honestly, not really. There are some jokes and terminology that do not fully stand the test of time, so if I watch it with a modern lens I think I would give it a 9.5. If I watch it in the context of the time it was written, I would probably give it a 9.8. But watching it in theaters certainly altered the way I engaged in certain scenes.
Mostly with the “I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking dressed like this, I’m even more obvious” scene.

Because people in the theater were laughing during this moment. Which is not to say I am judging them, I’m not mad at them for finding the moments leading up to that scene funny. I can understand how Arnold constantly having to catch himself and change his body language could come off as funny. But there is a weight to that scene for me that made the laughter feel incongruous. It is, in my opinion, an incredibly impactful scene. And it was hard for me to fully embrace that moment the way I know I would have if I was alone, after I realized that not everyone reads that scene as a serious one.
(Side Note: When I was looking for pictures of the movie poster, I found three different versions of it, and I chose the one above because it was the most intriguing to me in the way it presents Arnold. Because it is the only one of the posters that puts Arnold in a suit.)
The other moment, that I think I would have had a stronger response to if I was alone, was the moment near the end where Val takes off Arnold’s wig and introduces Arnold as his mother.

If I had watched this scene alone, I think there is a very high likelihood I would have gotten teary eyed during that moment. Because Val has spent so much time throughout this film trying to hide Arnold away. Wanting to send him off for the evening so they didn’t have to worry, trying to replace him with his biological mother, who he had never really met just for the sake of maintaining appearances.
Arnold LOVES Val. It is glaringly obvious from the first moment they share a screen that to Arnold, that is his kid. And I cannot imagine what it must have felt like for Arnold to literally have his every move critiqued and criticized for acceptable levels of gayness by his son and his partner. To feel unwanted by his son and his partner. To feel replaced by his son and his partner. He deserves to see and hear his son choose him, to know that Val considers Arnold his parent. Especially when Val’s biological mother is standing right there.
And as for the comedy aspect of this movie? I mean, it’s Robin WIlliams and Nathan Lane so it is obviously going to be a truly hilarious film all the way through.

Where does it fall in my By, For, About Queers Categorization?
Tumblr media
For and About
Any piece of media that places queer characters at the center of it is something I would categorize as “About Queers”
As far as I can tell, the writers and director are not queer. I consider films to be made By Queers when a queer person has a role in controlling how the story unfolds, usually this means a writer or director for me, actors too if they have any influence  over changing the story. (As an example, The Last of Us Episode 3 would be something that I would place in a By Queers category because Murray Bartlet who played Frank is gay and also was consulted to shape the way the characters were written and the story played out.) While Nathan Lane is gay, and I am sure a number of actors who play side characters are as well, I do not know how much influence they had over the film itself. Which is why I am currently excluding it from the By Queers categorization.
And as for the For Queers aspect? That moment where Arnold appears in a suit and tie before the dinner party, where he appears so much more obviously gay when he’s in “masculine clothes” that is written for the people who understand. The undercurrent of pain I mentioned, that exists to be recognized by the people who understand. Also, I watched this at the movie theater and I saw what kind of crowd it drew lmfao.
Favorite moment in the film?
Well, I could go sappy with it and pick one of the scenes I referenced above, but I would be lying. My absolute, hands down, no contest favorite moment in this film was seeing Agador in this cropped tank top:

Now, I know that Ben told me that the Units could be done in any order, but I think I want to start from Unit 1 and work my way through from there, so stay tuned for a write-up about Pariah (2011) from Unit 1: Coming of Age Post Moonlight.

During the filming of “Monkee See, Monkee Die,” June 1966.
“Midway through the season, we shot one of my favorites episodes of all time, ‘Getting Davy Jones.’ As the head of Fernwood Junior High’s Davy Jones Fan Club, Marcia is responsible for getting the impossibly cute lead singer from the Monkees to appear at their prom, and after various miscommunications and lots of worry, she comes through. […] Davy’s arrival on the set created a buzz greater than any other guest star we had on the show. Of course I was thrilled to be the one who got to interact with him. I can see why Eve could get jealous. Davy was a lovely guy, and it was a big deal to have a pop star of his caliber on the set. I noticed Barry watch him the way one might if looking for pointers. Though excited to be the object of his affection, or rather attention, I didn’t show it. I’d learned to play it cool around stars. My heart fluttered when he kissed me at the end, I’ll admit it, but Peter Tork was always my favorite Monkee. That was the difference between Marcia and me. She was predictable, a straight arrow. My taste was quirky, offbeat, and different.” - Maureen McCormick, Here’s The Story: Surviving Marcia Brady and Finding My True Voice (2009)
Q: “What do you want to do when The Monkees break up? Peter: “I try not to think too much about what happens after the Monkees break up. It’s rather depressing since I don’t know what I want to do. So far, I’ve found my greatest joy in being a performer and musician. When I’m on stage performing, I get a feeling of fulfillment that I don’t get at any other time. I’m inclined to think that I wouldn’t spend much time on television unless there was a live audience. That’s what really makes it fun — having the people right there. I like to work with a crowd, to sort of mold the act to suit the type of people in your audience. You don’t get that kind of challenge on a television set, except an occasional laugh from the crew. They get so used to your antics and they’ve seen you when you’re not quite so clever, so it’s very difficult to get a reaction from them. With a normal audience, however, even when they don’t react, it’s some kind of non-reaction. Maybe they can’t hear you or they can’t understand you or they just don’t like you. So, in conclusion, more or less, I think I’d want to do something for a live audience, but what sort of thing, I don’t know yet. Maybe I never will.” - Flip, August 1967
“[Peter] has reactivated some old contacts and recently tried out at Paramount for comedy spots on ‘Happy Days,’ ‘Laverne and Shirley’ and ‘Mork and Mindy.’ ‘
I’m trying comedy because I know I’m glib, and I know I’m good at it,’ he said. ‘And I’m taking acting lessons. I’ll be glib one day in drama too. ‘Maybe first I can get a walk-on, then some solid comedic roles, then maybe in time a feature role in another series, then films, then maybe I can make enough to finance my music, which is really what I want to do,’ he said, the bounds of his quite sincere fantasy mushrooming in a minute.” - article by Steve Sonsky, The Miami Herald, February 18, 1979 (x)

(An incoherent rambling/pondering below about when people say things like “the good old days of television” when things weren’t so “woke”)
Sometimes I truly wonder why people say, “ahhh, the good ol’ days” or “this couldn’t be made today!” when they think of old shows/movies that they watched when they were younger. Shows like “All In The Family”, “My Two Dads”, “Miami Vice”, etc. or this movie that popped up on my dash called “Blazing Saddles”. I know when some people say that phrase “good ol days” they mean the times where things weren’t as “political” (aka diverse or caring about minorities), but it seems that a lot of them missed the point that these shows were teaching. And when people say “couldn’t be made today!” they.. also still may be missing the point (I mean, perhaps one reason why people might be offended by something is because of misunderstanding of what the piece of media is trying to say).
If y’all have seen these shows then y’all know what I’m saying. But I think when they say “this couldn’t be made today” I think they’re right… but for different reasons. Let’s take “My Two Dads” an 80s show about two dudes taking care of this girl, but they aren’t sure who she belongs to. They raise her together, they’re very loving, and heck they even had an episode about how they are equal to families with a father/mother structure and they have a right to keep their kid. People nowadays would accuse them of pushing an agenda and brainwashing the children and tryin to destroy the nuclear family.
Next, let’s look at “Benson” a spinoff from the controversial comedy “Soap” (check out Matt Baume’s video abt them). “Benson” is a hilarious show and it’s about a wisecracking, sarcastic/smart alec African American man climbing the political ladder. He starts as a butler on “Soap”, he’s moved to the governor’s mansion and becomes the head of household affairs, later is promoted to state budget director, then Lieutenant Governor, and finally runs for governor… but unfortunately the show ends on a cliff hanger so we’ll never know whether he won or lost. Benson is the smartest one in the governor’s mansion, but the governor himself is a bit of an airhead, he’s silly, a little bit.. incompetent. But if this show was made today, people would say that the show is saying that black people are smarter than white people, they would be missing the point..
And Miami Vice, an 80s show that has been terribly warped by pop culture (think of what happened to Star Trek). People think of this show as the “cool cars, hot women, expensive fashion” type of show, but it’s so much more than that. Mutuals could explain this much clearly than I could. This show addresses issues like mental health, the cop system being very corrupted, lgbt rights, sexual assault (they don’t get it right all the time, but when they do, they do). People idolize Sonny (the main character), and wish to be him, but they fail to see how depressing his life is. They only see him as the Cool Guy™️, but he’s not necessarily that. If it was made today.. it would either just turn out like a “Fight Club” situation, people misunderstanding it, or people calling it propaganda.
And Wiseguy, a show abt an undercover agent things and such. There’s this arc that will forever remain relevant. The KKK arc (I forget the actual name for the arc). The racists blaming minorities for their loss of jobs, ruining the world, saying that the white race is in danger (the same old, same old racist shit). This show has been forgotten and I don’t really know why, it’s really good. This show would be labeled as woke and would be written off.
I think some of this also comes down to bad media literacy skills and such.. they fail to see messages that were targeted toward them, were trying to teach them something, but they miss it completely or they willingly ignore it…

One MidgeLenny x TSwift Fic Per Day
172. We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together
She hasn’t seen Lenny in weeks.
Carnegie Hall and then nothing. He’s not playing anywhere. He hasn’t called or showed up at any of her gigs, and she misses him. And when she’s upset or angry, she tends to make pretty reckless decisions.
So it surprises her when she laughs at Joel’s proposition.
He stares at her, clearly not expecting to be rebuffed by his twice ex-wife.
“Joel,” she sighs. “I need you to look at me and hear what I’m saying.” He furrows his brow, and she explains, “We are never...ever...getting back together.”
He rolls his eyes. “C’mon, Midge. You’re not seeing anyone, Mei left...it’s the perfect time for - ”
“No,” Midge interrupts. “Just because we’re both single does not mean we should get back together.”
“Midge,” Joel presses, taking a step toward her and gripping her hip in a possessive way that he probably thinks is sexy.
All Midge knows is his breath reeks of whiskey and that she doesn’t want him anymore. “Stop,” she protests, pushing him away with a palm on his chest.
Which clearly makes him angry, and suddenly Midge is wondering if alcohol is the only thing he’s taken tonight. He starts to advance on her again, but then - “I believe the lady said no.”
Lenny’s arm has extended between Midge and her ex, stopping Joel in his tracks. His face blanches a little bit as the sight of his comedy hero sobers him up a little. But then the anger returns. He clenches his jaw and sneers at Lenny, “This is none of your business.”
“Maybe not, but see, my friend here looks pretty damn uncomfortable, and as strong as she is, I wouldn’t place my bets on her in a brawl,” Lenny replies. “So I’ll take my chances.”
Midge stares up at Lenny - god, he’s so good at showing up at just the right time - and then places a hand on his shoulder. “Lenny, it’s okay,” she tells him quietly.
He looks back at her, and it’s just enough time for Joel’s fist to crack against his jaw. “Joel!” She shrieks. Lenny stumbles into the bar, and the whole club erupts in chaos.
One of Lenny’s friends - Alan, Midge remembers - shoves Joel away, and as Lenny turns to look back, she grabs his hand and starts running.
It’s not far to the door, and they reach the street together, Lenny stumbling a little from the shot he took. Midge immediately pulls him under a street lamp so she can inspect his jaw. There’s a bruise blooming there, but no cut, and she exhales shakily as her thumb brushes gently over his skin. “Are you okay?” He asks quietly.
She laughs softly. “I think I should be asking you that question,” she replies.
He smirks and then winces. “I’m fine,” he breathes. Midge nods, going to drop her hands, but his wrap around her wrists gently, keeping her there. She slips her hands to his neck, cupping it gently. “Are you okay?” He repeats.
“Thanks to my guardian angel,” she answers. He squeezes her wrists gently. "I’m sorry...Joel’s usually not like this. But Mei left him, and he’s been stressed with the club - ”
“It’s fine,” he promises, cutting off her rambling. “As long as you’re okay.”
A gentle grin meets her lips. “I’m great now,” she whispers. She gazes up at him, any anger she felt over their last meeting melting away, and she’s left staring up at the man she’s developed incredibly strong feelings for over the last year. “I missed you,” she admits after a long moment.
His gaze softens even further until he’s looking at her in a very similar way to that night in Miami. “I missed you, too,” he murmurs. “I had to take care of some things out of town. Work, my kid,” he explains as his hands slide along her arms until they’re resting on her waist. It’s gentle, almost tentative, a stark contrast to the way Joel had grabbed her a short while ago.
She blinks slowly. “Want to tell me about it?”
“Maybe over dinner?” He suggests, tilting his head.
“And an ice pack,” she adds, looking at the darkening bruise on his jaw.
He grins despite the obvious pain. “Deal.”

Thinking about the importance of television that they placed in season 5
Like stand up comedy is a live, in-person thing
That’s the gig, you go to a club and you do a set
And, sure, the Gordon Ford show allowed for an anchor for season 5 and also a goal
But all of the other anchors in previous seasons were live clubs/performances (the Gaslight, the Wolford, the Shy tour/Miami)
This season, the anchor and the goal was television
And then they end the whole show with midge and Susie watching tv— but not even anything symbolic or personal, just a game show. There’s no question about Midge or Lenny or even Alfie in the show
It’s like Amazon was like “remember how great television is? Right? Television is so great, and we have so many wonderful choices right here on Prime Video”
Strange last minute of the show

midge/lenny just being midge/lenny (you can interpret this however you would like)
"Have we ever actually been on a real stage together at the same time?"
Lenny thinks about that as he sits down on one of the stools provided for them. It's 1992, and they've been asked to do something special for a Broadway Cares charity event. Which means...
"I do not believe we have," he responds. "How does it feel to be on-stage with a comedy legend?"
Midge smiles at him. "Who, Robin Williams? Amazing. The man is a really something."
The audience laughs as Lenny rolls his eyes.
"I'm very famous and important you know," he tells her, pretending to be annoyed.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, he says that every time he fails to perform in bed," Midge tells the audience.
Lenny laughs at that along with the audience.
"Is this what they had in mind when they asked us to do this?" she asks. "Just roast each other for an audience?"
"I hope so because that's seemingly all we know how to do," Lenny chuckles. "I guess we could sing."
"You can sing," Midge says quickly. "I don't do that."
"She does," Lenny tells everyone. "She does. Voice of a fucking angel, refuses to admit it. Has the entire world believing she has no musical talent, and yet..."
"Look, if I'm pretty, and smart and funny and I can sing, I'm not leaving anything for any other performers," Midge explains. "There has to be something wrong with me."
Lenny looks up in exaggerated thought, and the audience laughs as he clearly weighs his options on what to say next.
"It's not worth it," he tells everyone. "I'm getting too old to spend that many nights sleeping on the couch in my office. Come on, you really don't wanna sing with me? Sure you do."
"What do you want to sing?" Midge asks, looking amused. "You're the Top? So you can call me a turkey dinner? I do not want to be called a turkey dinner."
"Well, what do you wanna do for these nice people?" Lenny asks. "They paid a lot of money to be here. We're standing on stage in front of an enormous portion of the Broadway community."
"I love Broadway," Midge beams. "I won a Tony."
Lenny groans. "We know."
"In 1968."
"Yes."
"For a play I wrote, and co-directed about my mother's time in Paris," Midge keeps explaining. "It's called Ma Cherie."
"They know," Lenny insists. "We all know."
"He won a Tony, too," Midge says, pointing at Lenny. "But I won mine first."
Lenny looks to the ceiling, shaking his head as the audience laughs. "This is why we don't do double acts."
Midge smiles and laughs. "Okay, okay, I give. We can sing."
"Finally. What are we singing?"
Midge smiles and dashes over to the piano player at the side of the stage, who's been patiently waiting for his cue, and when she dashes back, he starts playing and Lenny perks up, looking at her in surprise.
"You sap."
The audience laughs as the strains of Til There Was You start playing.
Midge laughs and turns to the audience. "The time is early 1960, and the place is a very atmospheric club in Miami. Two morons sit around staring at each other, trying to decide if they have genuine romantic feelings for one another, of if they just want to have sex and then never see each other again."
"One moron," Lenny corrects her, gazing at her adoringly. "The other moron had been head over heels in love for months."
"That moron gets to his feet and asks her to dance," Midge smiles fondly. "And this song starts to play."

Connie's Epic & Awesome Baby Shower.
This was a prompt given by an anon. I love these prompts cause it really has me writing a lot. Anyways the prompt was a prequel to my previous story, showing Connie's baby shower. Side note, Jesse is quickly becoming my favorite person to write. He really allows my sassiness to come through. Anyways, Enjoy!
“Why did Connie send you with me?” Charlie asked Jesse.
The two were on their way to the airport to pick up Dwayne, Luis, Kenny and Russ. They were all flying in for Connie’s baby shower.
Julie arrived last week and was staying at Adam and Charlie’s because they have a huge kitchen.
“Because Adam is better at decorating.” Jesse reminded him.
Adam had stayed back to help Guy and Connie with the last of the decorations. Charlie loved Jesse but he also really loved Adam.
“He is not.” Charlie countered.
Jesse laughed. “Your house says different.”
“That's not fair, I let him decorate cause I chose the house.” Charlie objected.
“Uh huh and it’s not because you would cover the house in Duck colors and Hockey posters.” Jesse commented.
“Is it because he’s gay?” Charlie wondered, “Cause that’s stereotypical.”
“No it’s because he’s a cake-eater and grew up with the finer things.” Jesse argued.
“Fair point.” Charlie conceded.
“Besides, just because you’re Bi doesn’t make you any less in love with cake-eater.” Jesse teased.
“I can’t help it, he stole my heart a long time ago.” Charlie lamented
“More like checked you into the boards and took it from you.” Jesse said with a laugh.
Charlie laughed too.
“Yeah he was a punk when he was on the hawks.” Charlie agreed.
“Come to find out he is just very affected by his surroundings.” Jesse insisted, “After not being around asses, we learned he’s 100% an introvert.”
“I’m glad, it means he feels safe around us.” Charlie replied wistfully.
Jesse rolled his eyes and pushed Charlie’s shoulder softly.
“Alright loverboy, reel it in.” Jesse teased. “Your pupils are gonna turn to actual hearts if you keep lamenting about your boyfriend.”
“Sorry Jesse,” Charlie said chuckling.
“9 years together and you’re still this mushy.” Jesse observed, “You must love him.”
“I do.” Charlie replied with a smile.
“You’re worse than Connie and Guy.” Jesse deadpanned.
“How dare you.” Charlie replied, faking hurt.
Jesse laughed and shoved him as they pulled up to the airport. The pair parked and took off to find their friends.
Kenny and Luis were coming in from Miami. After graduation they agreed to move in with Luis’ mom while they figured out what they wanted to use their degrees for.
Thankfully the Mendoza’s house was huge so they had plenty of privacy and had extra space should a fellow duck need to crash.
They were very happy just being together. Kenny had taken a job teaching figure skating and Luis helped his uncle fix up cars.
Dwayne was coming in from Austin. He had recently taken a job at an all boys school. He taught math and coached hockey. In high school he had been tested for a learning disability.
It came back he had ADHD, which explained why he seemed spacy sometimes. He was able to get treatment. He excelled in math and was great with kids so the teaching job was perfect.
Russ was coming in from Los Angeles. After school he went back to help his brother take care of their dad. Russ’ dad had suffered a minor stroke their senior year.
It took all the ducks to convince Russ not to drop out and head home when the news came through. However, once he had his diploma he was booking the plane home.
Thankfully his dad was able to recover. However, Russ had gotten used to living back home and agreed when his father asked him to move back in as his caregiver.
Along with taking care of his dad, Russ started doing shows at his local comedy club. With his wit and dry humor he was a fast hit.
He can go big time but Russ prefers to travel the LA area. He has a residence in a few clubs and casinos. It keeps him close to home and he gets paid to do what he loves.
“Who is arriving first?” Charlie asked Jesse.
“Russ should be here first, then Dwayne.” Jesse explained. “Then Kenny and Luis.”
“They’re all still on time?” Charlie asked, looking over the flight screens.
“Yep, they should all be here in time for the shower.” Jesse replied.
“Perfect,” Charlie stated. “Connie will skin us if we’re late to the shower.”
Jesse laughed but nodded.
“Come on, this way to Russ’ terminal.” Jesse instructed.
Charlie followed easily. It was about 11:15 am Minnesota time. Russ’ flight should have landed at 11:10 am. So Charlie and Jesse had made it just in time to meet him.
The pair scanned the area around the departure doors. Jesse spotted Russ first.
“Hey loudmouth!” Jesse cupped his hands and yelled.
Russ laughed and spotted Jesse. Hurrying over, he pulled Jesse into a loose headlock.
Jesse laughed and pushed him off before the two shared a handshake.
“We missed you, hollywood.” Jesse confessed.
“I wish I could say the same.” Russ jokes. “Damn, it’s freezing up here, who decided to have a shower in March.”
“Russ, it’s Minnesota.” Charlie replied sarcastically, “It’s cold like 9 months out of the year.”
“Which means you had 3 months where you had suitable weather.” Russ jokes.
Jesse snorts.
“It’s not our fault Connie is due in July.” He retorted.
“No but I will still blame you.” Russ replied.
Jesse and Charlie slugged Russ softly. Russ laughed and pulled Charlie into a hug. He did miss his friends, even if he would never admit that.
“Am I the first one?” He asked as the trio moved to retrieve Russ’ bags.
“Yeah but Dwayne should get in around 11:30.” Charlie replied.
“Then Kenny and Luis should arrive at 11:45.” Jesse added.
“So you got lucky and only had to collect 4 of us?” Russ teased.
“Well Julie got in last week, she wanted to be early so she could have enough time to make the cake for the party.” Charlie explained. Russ nodded in understanding.
“And Averman insisted he go down and pick up Goldberg.” Jesse admitted. Russ winced.
“That car ride had got to be insane.” He commented.
“Yeah, we didn’t argue with him too much.” Jesse confessed, causing Russ to snort.
“And Fulton and Portman work together so they are coming together.” Charlie noted.
“How are the construction jobs treating them?” Russ asked.
“Pretty good, it’s Minnesota so they’re always needed.” Jesse explained.
Russ nodded in understanding. He hasn’t lived in Minnesota for long but he saw how the winter affected the buildings.
“Is Bombay showing up?” Russ asked hesitantly.
Jesse frowned and shook his head.
“Connie invited him but he was in the middle of training his new recruits and couldn’t come.” Jesse explained.
Russ frowned, their former coach had been around less and less as the years went on. Charlie took it the hardest. He still loved their former coach but he was definitely a touchy subject.
Russ cleared his throat to clear the air.
“So, what is the plan while we wait for the others?” He asked Charlie.
Charlie smiled. “Well we can send you to Connie’s in a taxi or you can wait here while the others arrive.”
Russ scoffed. “Do you think I’d miss the insanity that is a Hall-Conway car ride?”
Charlie rolled his eyes. “It isn’t that exciting.”
“Watching you and Jesse argue about the new NFL draft or whatever else is free entertainment.” Russ teased. “It’s a good thing Jesse is straight cause he would definitely be competition for Adam.”
Jesse scoffed and shoved his friend playfully.
“Oh shut up.” Charlie sassed.
Russ laughed and led the pair to the baggage claim. Once Russ had gotten his suitcase and was settled into the waiting area of the airport's Caribou. Jesse and Charlie hurried to their next destination.
Dwayne’s plane was arriving at the gate on the far end of the airport. So Charlie and Jesse had to sprint to make it in time. The two came to a stop in front of the terminal. Both panting heavily. Their heads shot up at a familiar southern drawl.
“Yeehaw!” Dwayne explained. “Is the Jesse Hall and Charlie Conway I see!” The cowboy smiled and sauntered over to the pair.
“Hey, Tex.” Charlie said with a smile pulling Dwayne into a hug. Among the Ducks, Dwayne definitely gave the best hugs.
Dwayne hugged back tightly causing Charlie to laugh.
“I missed you too, Dwayne.” Charlie said, his words tight due to the loss of oxygen.
“Stop hogging him, Charlie.” Jesse sniggered.
Dwayne smiled and let go of Charlie only to pull Jesse into an equally tight hug. He loved Texas but nothing beat being among his friends again.
After a moment Dwayne pulled back.
“Thanks, I think you cracked my back.” Jesse said with a smile.
Dwayne let out a chuckle. “Who is all here?”
“At the airport or in Minnesota?” Charlie questioned.
“Both.” Dwayne replied.
“Russ is here and almost everyone else is in the area.” Charlie explained. “I think Averman and Goldberg are an hour out still.”
“Who decided that pair was a good idea to travel together?” Dwayne questioned, legitimately concerned.
Jesse chuckled. “Better them than us, cowboy.”
Dwayne thought for a second and nodded.
“Let’s grab your bags and we can drop you off with Russ.” Charlie explained. “We still have to grab Kenny and Luis.”
Dwayne nodded in agreement and followed Charlie and Jesse to baggage claim. Thankfully it took less time to grab Dwayne’s luggage and get him settled.
Russ hugged the Texan and they began talking immediately. This allowed Charlie and Jesse to step away and head to their final terminal.
Thankfully this time they were early. The flight in from Miami was the least busy. Most Floridians do not want to bear the cold. So it was easy to spot Kenny and Luis.
The two men exited the terminal hand in hand. They were discussing something softly so Charlie spotted them first.
“Kenny! Luis!” He shouted, waving his hands around.
The pair looked up and smiled. They strided over to Jesse and Charlie. No once did they relinquish the other’s hand.
“Hey guys.” Kenny said with a smile. “It’s great to be back.”
Jesse smiled and pulled Kenny into a hug.
“I’m sure it’s nice to be around others that aren’t Luis.” He joked, cradling Kenny dramatically.
“Yeah I hope you’ve been taking care of our precious Kenny.” Charlie added.
Luis stared at them exasperated.
“Nice to know which one of us is the favorite.” He commented dryly.
Charlie and Jesse laughed. Charlie pulled Luis into a hug and slapped him on the back. Luis smiled and hugged back. They soon switched so Kenny could hug Charlie and Jesse could give Luis a noogie.
Luis laughed and pushed off Jesse. He took Kenny’s hand again.
“So, what’s we miss?” Kenny asked.
“Not much, Russ and Dwayne are here chilling at Caribou.” Jesse explained. “You’re the last to arrive.”
“Cool, that means we can head out right after we grab our bags.” Luis said with a smile.
“It wouldn’t be so bad to wait.” Kenny argued. “I liked the Minneapolis airport.”
“Well thankfully you will have time to take in the airport when we drop you off for your return trip.” Charlie joked.
Kenny laughed. “Fair point, shall we?”
Luis nodded and the couple followed Jesse and Charlie to retrieve their bags. After they had secured their luggage. The group made their way to retrieve the last two.
Dwayne screamed Kenny’s name and pulled the shorter boy into a hug. Spinning him before setting him down, leaving Kenny slightly disheveled but sporting a large smile. Dwayne moved on to Luis, giving him a strong hug.
“I missed you guys.” Dwayne confessed.
Although all the Ducks were like family. The newer Ducks shared a special bond with each other.
“We missed you too, Dwayne.” Luis said with a smile.
“Kenny Wu, is that a ring on your finger?” Russ hollered.
Four pairs of eyes zeroed in on Kenny’s left hand. On his ring finger sat a simple silver band with a small ruby embedded in it.
Kenny blushed and played with the ring.
“We didn’t want to take attention away from Connie.” He confessed.
The questions were immediate. Kenny could barely register who was talking.
“When did this happen?”
“Did you pick out the ring or did Luis?
“Why didn’t you call us!”
“Is it real?”
Luis turned and glared softly at Russ.
“Yes, it’s real!” He said annoyed.
“Just making sure.” Russ teased. Luis rolled his eyes.
“We didn’t want a big deal about it.” Luis explained.
“Yes, because asking someone to marry you is a common, everyday thing.” Charlie replied sarcastically.
Kenny snorted.
“Luis proposed a week ago.” Kenny recalled, “He picked out the ring and it was so close to the baby shower we wanted to wait to tell everyone.”
“Our little Kenny is growing up.” Charlie said, wiping an invisible tear.
Kenny shoved him. “Get real.”
Charlie laughed. The small group congratulated the couple. Jesse turned to conversation back to their current situation.
“Alright so Charlie parked in tower C.” He explained as the group started walking to the car. “It isn’t far, once we get the car filled up, we are heading straight to the baby shower.”
“Afterwards, we’ll drop you off at your hotels.” Charlie added.
The group nodded in understanding.
“I just hope Charlie is a better driver than Averman.” Luis teased.
“Well I haven’t died yet.” Jesse replied cheekily.
“Hey!” Charlie shouted. The group broke into laughter that lasted all the way to the car. Jesse and Charlie loaded up the trunk. While their friends picked their seats. Charlie had an SUV so the car seated them all comfortably.
Dwayne convinced Russ to sit in the far back with him. So Russ couldn’t mess with Jesse while they were driving. Luis and Kenny took the middle two seats.
Jesse and Charlie reclaimed their seats up front and Charlie started the short ride back to Connie and Guy’s.
By the time the small group had arrived back to the site of the baby shower, the place was practically covered in balloons and streamers.
Connie didn’t care for the traditional pink and blue so everything was Ducks colors. The Green, white and gold seemed the perfect for this celebration.
Adam was hanging the final banner when Charlie walked through the door.
“Should you be up there?” He asked
Adam rolled his eyes.
“I am not gonna hurt myself by putting up a banner.” He argued.
“You say that as if you aren’t the accident prone one.” Charlie said with a smile.
“Most of my injuries were not self-inflicted.” Adam retorted. “There.”
Adam pulled back and checked if the banner was straight. When he was satisfied with his work he moved to climb down the stepladder.
“You know if I wanted to be mother-henned, maybe I should be dating Casey.” Adam teased.
“My mother is too good for you.” Charlie replied, pulling Adam into his arms.
“And yet you aren’t?” Adam said with a laugh.
“No, I am just right for you.” Charlie retorted.
“You’re a sap.” Adam replied but didn’t argue when Charlie pulled him into a chaste kiss.
The pair had been together since they were 17 but every kiss still felt like their first. They always made Adam’s legs feel weak. He loved them so much.
“Alright, lovebirds.” Jesse said, nudging the pair apart. “Leave some room for jesus.”
“We are two men in a relationship.” Adam replied dryly, “Jesus was never involved.”
Jesse laughed and went into the kitchen. Julie was finishing up the food spread. Her large beautifully decorated cake was the centerpiece.
“It looks great, Jules,” Jesse said, earning a smile from Julie.
“Can you watch the cake?” She asked, “If Averman or Goldberg try to sneak a piece early I am dragging them back to New York with me and they’re on dish duties for two weeks.
“That sounds more like a punishment for you.” Jesse remarked. Julie sighed, exasperated.
“Connie wanted the cake to be the gender reveal and I refuse to let them ruin it.” She explained.
“I will watch them.” Jesse promised.
“Thank you.” Julie replied. “Where are the others?”
“Guy wrangled Dwayne, Luis and Russ into setting up chairs.” Jesse explained, “Charlie and Adam are in the living room making heart eyes at each other and Kenny went to wake Connie.”
“I’m glad Guy was able to convince her to rest before the party.” Julie confessed. “It’s gonna take a lot out of her.”
Jesse nodded in agreement. “Do you need any help?”
Julie shook her head. “I am just about done.”
Julie put the final touches on a set of cupcakes she had baked. She smiled and set the treats down with the rest of the food.
“There, all set.” Julie said, smiling and wiping her hands on her apron.
Jesse smiled, “You do great work.”
“I know.” Julie said with a smile.
“Oh Julie, it’s beautiful.” A voice said from the door.
Jesse and Julie turned to see Kenny and Connie come into the kitchen. Connie had her hands on her small baby bump and Kenny was holding her arm.
“I agree, Jules, this is great.” Kenny said with a smile. Julie beamed at the compliments.
“It was the least I could do.” Julie replied. “You’re having the first in the next generation of Ducks.”
“Well it would have been me or you.” Connie jokes.
“Yeah well I am nowhere near wanting that.” Julie replied which caused Connie to laugh.
Julie pulls Connie and Kenny into a hug.
“You’re gonna be a great mom, Connie.” Julie stated.
“Well, it helps to have a huge support group.” Connie replied.
The trio pulled back and Julie caught sight of Kenny’s ring.
“Luis finally proposed?” She asked smartly.
Kenny blushed and Connie laughed.
“Yeah, last week, they didn’t tell us because of the shower.” She reported.
Julie laughed. “You guys aren’t good at hiding things.”
“No, the Ducks are just too observant.” Kenny argued.
“Only a few of them.” Jesse retorted. “Have to make up for the rest of us.”
The group laughed loudly. Connie held on to Kenny so she didn’t fall over.
“What’s so funny?” Guy asked entering the kitchen.
“Oh nothing, you know we can laugh at anything.” Connie reassured him.
“That is true.” Guy agreed, “Are you ready, the shower is set to start in about 5 minutes.”
Connie nodded and separated from Julie and Kenny to take Guy’s hand.
“I am ready.” She confirmed, “This is gonna be a blast.”
Guy nodded in agreement and led his wife out to the living room. Chairs had been set up in a circle around a large arm chair where Connie would sit. All the Ducks had taken their seats. Adam and Charlie sat to the right of Connie. A chair between them and Connie where Connie’s mother sat.
Next to them Luis sat, Kenny slipped into the seat next to him and took his hand. Russ, Dwayne, Portman and Fulton took up the next four seats.
Fulton and Portman had arrived shortly after Charlie and Jesse. Julie took the second seat to Connie’s left. This allowed Guy to sit next to his wife. The only two Ducks missing were Averman and Goldberg.
However, soon the sound of hollering was heard from the door as Goldberg and Averman all but crashed through the door. Connie laughed at the pair.
Goldberg came over and hugged Connie, putting a large gift in the pile at her feet. Averman waved hello and took a seat next to Luis. His eyes noted the ring, Averman wiggled his eyebrows at Luis. Luis chose to ignore this.
“Thank you all for coming.” Connie said, smiling. It was nice to be surrounded by her family again.
Guy cleared his throat. “So, we were thinking first we could open presents and then eat.” He explained. “ The Connie and I will cut the cake Julie made.”
“And if anyone touches the cake beforehand I know where the knives are.” Julie threatened, eyeing Goldberg and Averman. The pair gulped and nodded.
Connie laughed. “Alright, so which gift should I open first?”
After a short argument the group decided Connie should open Adam and Charlie’s gift first. Charlie and Adam had picked out a beautiful blue baby blanket and matching pillow. It was a light enough color that it could be used for either gender. Connie gushed over it and thanked them.
She continued on. The gifts were all lovely. Jesse had gifted her a baby’s ducks jersey. Goldberg gave her a “I have awesome uncles” shirt. Connie rolled her eyes at this but thanked him. Averman gave her a gift card to a local spa for when the baby was a little older. It was an unexpectedly generous gift.
Russ gave her a small pile of baby clothes. He wanted her to be prepared. Luis and Kenny gave her a grocery gift card. Guy appreciated that gift the most. Dwayne gave Connie a small pile of bibs, he had sewn them himself. Portman gave her a large radio for the baby's room. He also gave her a few of his favorite CDs for when the kid got older. Fulton had made Connie a large, wooden toybox and added a few toys as well. Julie’s gift was the food. Connie thanked everyone and the party moved to the kitchen to get food.
The Ducks sat and ate and caught up. Luis and Kenny took this moment to announce their engagement after some encouragement from Connie. They were met with cheers and wolf whistles. After everyone had their fill of food, Charlie helped Julie carry out the cake.
“Now, we wanted to do a gender reveal but we didn’t want anything cheesy so Julie suggested we do this cake.” Connie explained.
“So, we’re gonna cut into it and the color will reveal the gender of our baby.” Guy added.
“Ok, so cut it already.” Russ prodded.
The couple laughed and took the knife. Together they cut into the 5 layer dessert and pulled out a slice of dyed blue cake. The Ducks cheered happily and congratulated Connie and Guy.
Julie took over cutting and serving the rest of the cake. After that the party winded down. The Ducks did stay over to help clean up before taking their leave.
Guy pulled Connie close after the last guest had left and kissed his wife. It was times like this he remembered how grateful he was for her and their friends.

Colliding heads with another mom, Liwei reflects on how ausipcious a time this is for her son to have a makeover.
Tumblr media
After the ‘70s invented disco and bisexuality, the early ‘80s followed through with himbos and crop tops. It is when even straight people gave up on trying to look straight. This is a fantastic era for him.

Xiyuan pops a hip and pretends not to care that Sim David Bowie is scrutinizing the entire world from his chest. Liwei shakes her head. If anyone tries to whisk her son off on an impromptu trip to Sulani, they’re going to miss their flight with that amount of metal on his waist. The laces on the shoes are irrelevant, though, because she has no idea security theater is going to amp up 21 years later.
Tumblr media
Xiyuan fist pumps. Woo! Miami! But Liwei shakes her head. There is an acceptable level of Florida, and this way overshoots it. She motions to her son to turn the Florida slider down 90% of the way, and he immediately understands the gesture.
Tumblr media
Xiyuan shrugs: he’s taking a risk with this one, but it’s his colors and why not go experimental? Liwei shakes her head. It’s not that the kids would make fun of him—they don’t have the context awareness to recognize clothing as gender nonconforming and bully someone because of it—but because if Lily Feng sees this, there’s no telling how she’d act.
Tumblr media
Liwei shrugs her shoulders. Fine. Whatever. Behind her, in a different universe, someone is laughing too hard at the green corduroy pants and Oxfords to want to change this.
Tumblr media
The clothing having been chosen, Liwei gestures to her son to come closer. There is one last thing that must be done.

Liwei takes off Xiyuan’s glasses, revealing HE WAS HOT ALL ALONG!!!

Then she puts them back on, revealing that THE GLASSES MAKE HIM HOTTER!!!

Pairing: Lenny Bruce & Midge Maisel Rated T
Part 1 | Part 2
Uptown/Downtown: Cohorts in Comedy by Charles Ellsworth
If you have ever read a newspaper or watched a late night talk show, it's likely the name Lenny Bruce is familiar to you. The comic has been working nightclubs across the country since 1947, and this past November, the controversial comedian packed the house at Carnegie Hall (during a blizzard, no less).
The name Mrs. Maisel, on the other hand, may not ring a bell for many of our readers. If you frequent the comedy clubs of downtown Manhattan or happened to see Shy Baldwin on tour last year, you may have seen the rising star delivering surprising, spontaneous, or even startling performances.
Mrs. Maisel is the stage name of Miriam Weissman, and if you were to cross her path, you would never expect her to be a comic, much less be able to go toe-to-toe with arguably the best comic of his generation. She sits primly in a chair, wearing a polka-dotted dress, hair coiffed to perfection.
Lenny Bruce has made a name for himself as a notorious, often obscene comic, discussing politics, religion, and his (rather lengthy) arrest record. Mrs. Maisel presents as a proper, put together mother and (ex) wife, her sets laden with stories of the difficulties of being a mother, a daughter, and a divorcée.
The two comedians could not be any more different, and yet, if you are ever fortunate enough to be in the presence of both at once, you could understand why there have been rumors surrounding their relationship for the past year. Their banter is effortless, each one setting the other up for a joke executed expertly.
But how did this seemingly unlikely friendship begin?
"Drunkenly," jokes Bruce, receiving a laugh from Maisel, who goes on to tell the story of the night she became a comedian.
"My husband had just left me," she explains. "So I got very, very drunk, wandered onto the stage at the Gaslight, and then proceeded to get arrested and thrown in the back of a police car next to [Lenny]."
While Maisel talks of the night they met, Bruce watches fondly. "I knew right then that she was special," he says.
When Maisel tries to call his bluff, the male comic simply shrugs and adds, "I'm rarely wrong about this kind of thing. I've been doing comedy for a long time, and there are good comics, there are great comics, and there are the few legends. She's going to be one of them."
I am inclined to agree.
I had the good fortune of seeing Mrs. Maisel perform in Miami while she was on tour with Shy Baldwin. Her sets are often unplanned. The night I happened to see her, she had just discovered her parents in the lobby of the Fontainebleau Hotel, where the tour was performing. The set that followed was some of the most inspired improvised comedy I have ever had the pleasure of seeing.
A soft blush meets her cheeks when I tell her so, but before she can comment, Bruce jumps in. "Didn't you sleep on a pool lounger that night?" He asks, and Maisel lets out a surprisingly undignified laugh.
"I did! I didn't want to wake Carole [Keen, bassist for Shy Baldwin], and Lenny had kept me out until sunrise."
"You had fun that night," Bruce retorts, smirking from behind his hand.
"I had fun that night," she confirms, smiling at him and ruffling his hair affectionately.
So what's next for the two comics?
After his triumph at Carnegie Hall, Bruce disappeared from the comedy scene for a few months for reasons on which he declined to comment, but he is back next week at the Copacabana.
As for Mrs. Maisel?
"I just started working as the warm up comic for The Gordon Ford Show," she says, looking toward Bruce, who gazes at her proudly. "It allows me to make people laugh, support my family, and still have time to work the club scene to work new material."
I ask whether her ambitions are in the realm of television, and she shrugs with a smile. "I love doing stand up. In a way, my marriage ending was the best thing that ever happened to me. It led me to discovering something I'm great at that not a lot of people can do. So I want to work as much as I can. Everywhere I can. But the goal?" She looks to Bruce again, sharing a smile with him before answering.
"Carnegie Hall."
When that day comes, this reporter will be in line at the box office, second only to Lenny Bruce.
