Where the Crawdads Sing (2022)

I finished the book today.

It took me weeks to get through the first 6 chapters, and then less than 24 hours to finish the rest of the book.

I immediately followed the book with the film. I do not recommend doing this.

The film was fine. I’m not sure about the casting decisions. I’m not sure about the editing. I’m not sure about their subtle remix of the story. But the film was (objectively) stunning.

I think it’s just too hard to follow your own interpretation of a book so quickly with the film. I’ll have to remember not to do that again in future.

It can’t have been an easy story to translate into film, so, for me, 3/5.

2024 Reading Log, pt 2

006. Gardening Can Be Murder by Marta McDowell. I honestly thought that this book was going to be about something else. With the subtitle “how poisonous plants, sinister shovels and grim gardens have inspired mystery writers”, I thought it was going to be about, you know, that. True crime themed to gardens, discussions of poisonous plants, that sort of thing. The book is actually about the mystery books that have gardening as a theme. And while the author’s dedication to not spoiling anything (seriously, anything, even 150 year old stories like The Moonstone or “Rappacini’s Daughter”) is admirable in its own way, this leaves the book feeling like endless buildup without any payoff. Big fans of murder mysteries might enjoy this—especially the last chapter, which interviews writers about their gardens—but I found it more boring than anything else, and finished it only because it was very short.

007. Antimony, Gold and Jupiter’s Wolf by Peter Wothers. This book is about how the elements got their names, and most of it deals with the early modern period, as alchemy transitioned to chemistry and then into the 19th century, when chemistry was a real science, but things like atomic theory were not yet understood. The book goes into fascinating detail, and has a lot of quotes from primary sources, as scientists then were just like scientists now, that is, opinionated and bickering with each other over their preferred explanations. And names! Many of the splits between elements and their symbols (like Na for sodium) are due to compromise attempts to appease two different factions with their preferred names. A book covering arcane minutia of history always has the risk of feeling like a slog, but this is a fast and fun read.

008. Doctor Dhrolin’s Dictionary of Dinosaurs by Nathan T Barling and Michael O’Sullivan, illustrations by Mark P Witton. This book is an odd concept, but one that I was immediately on board with—a D&D book written by paleontologists with the intention of bringing accurate and interesting stats for prehistoric reptiles to the game. The fact that it’s mostly illustrated by Mark Witton definitely clinched my backing that Kickstarter. And this book is a lot of fun. So much so, that I read it all in a single sitting. I don’t know how accurate the stats are (like, a Hatzegopteryx has a higher CR than titanosaurs or T. rexes), but they seem like they’d be fun in play, and the writing does a good job of combining fantasy fun with actual education. Even for someone not running a 5e game, the stuff on how to run animals as not killing machines, and the mutation tables, could be useful. There are multiple types of playable dinosaurs, all of which seem like they’d work well at the table and avoid typical stereotypes, and a lot of in-jokes and pop culture references (like the cursed staff of unspared expense, which looks like Hammond’s cane in the Jurassic Park movie).

009. Romaine Wasn’t Built in a Day by Judith Tschann. I’m a sucker for books about etymology. And this one, on food etymology, is a pretty breezy read. I had fun with it, and it even busted some misconceptions that I had, etymologically speaking. Like, there’s no evidence that “bloody” as an explicative originated from “God’s blood”? Wild. Etymology books tend to be written in a sort of stream-of-consciousness style, where talking about one word may lead down a garden path to the next one. The book also has a couple of little matching quizzes, which is something I haven’t seen in a book since like the 90s.

010. The Lives of Octopuses and their Relatives by Danna Staaf. I was previously a little disappointed in The Lives of Beetles, another book in this series, but I knew I liked Staaf, who wrote the excellent book Squid Empire about cephalopod evolution and paleontology. I’m pleased to report that this book is also excellent. Staaf takes the “lives” part seriously, and the book is arranged by ecology, looking at different marine habitats, the challenges that they pose to living things, and the cephalopods that live there. Cuttlefish get slightly short shrift in this book compared to squids and octopuses, but that’s about the biggest complaint I had. I like how the species profiles cover more obscure taxa, and information about the best studied (like Pacific giant octopus and Humboldt squid) is kept to the chapters.

Hey guys! I hope you're doing well, I'm officially back from my break, honestly I felt really bad blogging for personal reasons, but hey, here I am to start again here on tumblr with a tag game!💕🥰

1.- Could you summarize the content of your Tumblr?

My content regularly varies (I think that's my big problem), but if I could sum it up it would be Simblr, 2000s, Random Stuff and Other Games

2.-What inspired you to upload content?

The first thing I did when I entered Tumblr was to search for things about Simblr, and there I found the fabulous @simstralia, I swear guys, I am very fascinated by seeing Simstralia's blogs, their photographs and their way of telling stories seem super cute and interesting! I also usually get a lot of inspiration from my favorite youtubers Cukizilla, Jaiden Animations, Let me explain studios, Danna Alquati, La Divaza, Civer and others haha 💕💗

3.- Would you change your content in the future?

Not at the moment, but I am thinking of dedicating myself entirely to abandoning simblr and uploading content related to Stardew Valley and South Park in the future.

4.- Do you have in mind some blogs that you want to do?

If haha I have several among them they would be: A blog of the Vmas (By the way, are you going to see the vmas this year? Honestly, I prefer to wait for the grammys, since there is nothing interesting, unless something happens) , The blog of the custom universities I'm doing, the blog of my Alpinloch custom hood and possibly an outfit Lookbook.

5.-A song that reminds you a lot of something

Back To December by Taylor Swift, this song reminds me a lot of my trip to Cotopaxi (Because I listened to that song almost all day haha)

Hey Soul Sister by Train (If I remember correctly), it reminds me a lot of when I was a little kid and I went to the boy scouts, I literally still love that song and I still remember the lyrics

To be famous, honestly I want to make music (And I'm even working on it) but there is a little problem: The music industry is very fucked up nowadays, if you want to be a singer you need to be attractive or already be an influencer (This shows a lot how little amount of talent there is some "celebrities" have, and this is very noticeable here in Latin America), So for the moment I will continue improving everything and maybe I will publish some demos here 😅🤡

8.- If you could collaborate with any other blog, who would it be?

No, but I have met people who are a bit hypocritical, who speak wonders about other people but are not even able to support them or speak ill of them behind their back... Which makes me very sad, since I admired those people a lot... . 🙄😤🙁

No, what's more, I would use my tumblr to tell my children: "This is what I used to do when I was a teenager and I had nothing to do haha"

12.- If you could travel in time, where would you go and what would you do?

Obviously I would travel to the 2000s, to be more specific to 2001 and I would become friends with Britney Spears, I would tell her everything that will happen to her in the future. I would also travel to the 70s or 80s to meet Freddy Mercury or even Michael Jackson

13.-Frustrated dreams

Having long hair (but my mom always tells me to cut it whenever my hair is a little long), dress like in High School Musical, be emo, have a myspace, have a collection of something and above all... Last for at least one year in a relationship

14.- What do you want to be when you are an adult?

If I don't become famous, I would dedicate myself to learning several languages and become a private teacher, I would also study philosophy or just study programming (To make games)

Yay, another writing emoji ask! These are fun! Keep them coming! I have already answered a few here!

🛠What tools/programs/apps do you use to write?

Well, I am a big ol' Microsoft Word fan. I've been using it since they taught me how to use computers in elementary school, and while I've tried other word processors, Google Drive, etc, Word is my tried and true. I have it on my PC, my Mac, my iPad, and my iPhone. I write in traditional paragraph form in Times New Roman, size 11, spaced 1.15. Though I've tried writing in different fonts when working on two vastly different projects before.

I am also a fan of the college-ruled spiral notebook and the Pilot G-2 Series 0.34 (or 0.5) gel pen in black. That pen lets me write on both sides of a sheet of notebook paper without bleeding through and I love that. Right now, I'm using a smaller, three-subject notebook with tabs (since I have been working on a trilogy).

Other tools:

before Flash Player left us, a lot of different avatar makers since I'm not good at drawing but needed visuals of my OCs

fandom sources (I have the BttF movies on my desktop behind my Word document so I can get the dialogue perfect, explore what's in the frame, etc. I also have all three movie novelizations, the 2015 newspaper, maps, comics, you name it. I draw from all of these sources when I'm writing to give the work a well-rounded and grounded feel.)

Google and Wikipedia are your friends so long as you know how to verify the validity of the sources. And I always triple-check the information I plan to use.

I honestly act some stuff out if I can't choreograph a scene in my head. I can write it, but then I realize what I've written isn't physically possible, so this helps!

🎶 Do you listen to music while you write? What song have you been playing on loop lately?

I do. I love music so freaking much. I planned to do music education when I first entered college! I've been a huge film/ tv/ video game score fan since before I can remember. I have specific playlists for each of the stories I've written -- and not just songs that fit the story, but songs I just couldn't stop listening to.

Right now, I've been finishing up the festival scenes in Where You Were, so I've been listening to a lot of the festival music included in the 25th-anniversary edition of the BttF 3 score. But of course the scores for these films inspire my story!

Songs that come during the course of writing the story and help build my plot and tone are special. Right now, for Where You Were, these are some of the pieces I've been playing on a loop:

"You're Full of Stars" by Max Richter (Invasion, Apple TV) - I played this constantly when writing the opening prologue where Marty brings Doc back to the mansion and has the big, dark space to himself during the storm.

"Zeit" (Remix by Olàfur Arnalds) by Rammstein - I love Olàfur. It didn't fit the tone of the scene exactly, but I played this a lot when writing Doc and Marty in the archives.

"Tell Him" by Rob Simonsen (The Adam Project, Netflix) - Doc has a big revelation! :D

"Stuff We Did" by Michael Giacchino (Up) - This is a softer variation of the "Married Life" theme that I imagine for Doc and Emma's mother. Perfect for their last scene together in the series.

"I Can't Sell" by Amelia Warner (Wild Mountain Thyme) - This beautifully soft and stirring piece is what I officially dub "Clara's Theme" in my series. I also pair her with the softer variations of the main theme from The Patriot (2000, music by John Williams)

"Kings and Queens" by Thomas Newman (Tolkien) - No spoilers, but a very bright, peaceful snippet for a future Marty and Emma scene.

"Teach You To Read" by Mychael Danna (Where the Crawdads Sing) - I have no real scene assigned to this, but I am stuck on this track right now. It's gorgeous. It captures wonder, curiosity, and enlightenment beautifully, but applying the tone to anything in particular stumps me at the moment. Right now, it's just a dopamine hit during research.

The entire score from News of the World by James Newton Howard and the two volumes of the 1883 scores by Brian Tyler & Breton Vivian basically wrote There Are No Roads (Part 2.5 of my series). The main theme from 1883 is what created and what anchors the tense relationship between Emma and Tannen specifically.

A song with words, you ask? Two recent discoveries I love: "Want Want" by Maggie Rogers is what I imagine a pre-series Emma going through when it comes to Marty, and "Love Brand New" by Bob Moses is kind of my anthem for Not Marty and Not Emma in 1985A now.

Sorry. I could talk music all day, but that's just for the fic I'm working on! I love my film and television scores. There are incredible.

😅 What's a story or scene you've created that you're a smidge embarrassed exists?

So, right now, if it's on my FF.Net page and NOT my AO3, I want to clean it up before really calling attention to it again. Most of those fics were written in high school before I took a real interest in pursing writing and perfecting the craft, so the quality is night and day.

One in particular I guess would be "Light Up the Sound" from 2006. This was the appearance of my BttF OC, Emma Brown, and she was SUCH a Mary Sue I can't even read this thing in one sitting anymore. Luckily, I learned a lot in nine years before deciding to get serious about attempting The Time Circuits Series, and Emma went through a HUGE overhaul. When I rewrote "Light Up the Sound" into my series' prequel "Red Letter Date", she was her own person, and the difference in writing is amazing.

I leave "Light Up the Sound" published as a reminder of how far I've come. From that shit show, I've developed an OC that has received high praise for being well-rounded and seamlessly inserted into a beloved story we all know, and I am incredibly proud of that. But my god, I had to practice a lot of tough love to transform this silly snippet into the launching pad for a trilogy rewrite.

I mean, for goodness sake, I had Emma's birthday as November 12th, and it can't get more cringe than that when it comes to a Mary Sue (unless I gave her purple eyes, of course). I wrote three chapters of the first story and had her at Marty's side CONSTANTLY. I was THAT author.

And I've learned a lot since then. And I applied what I learned to change my character and my story for the better.

Gratefully, it seems to have paid off. :)

Deidara walks outside to where Kabuto is standing, looking tired and refusing to look the medic in the eye while speaking to him.

"Sasori-no-Danna says you can come inside, hn. He doesn't understand why you show up early just to wait outside." What a weirdo. What was he waiting for? An invitation?

[ based on the wet dream ask where kabuto is either late or early and waits. so, now i imagine him showing up early to meet-ups and then just standing outside like michael myers ]

He still felt sick and unclean even after he went back to sleep after that horrible nightmare that he had went through. Despite only eating a food pill to keep himself from feeling hungry and had at least 2 baths before arriving, he could still feel his stomach turning about restlessly a waves on a beach sands.

Keeping his hood up and covering his face, he also does not look at Deidara in the eye either. And how could he? When he would see those eyes, all he could remember is how they were so sultry and yet also mocking him as well.

"I think it's preferrable like this to avoid arriving too early and bothering Lord Sasori before the meeting time. So that Lord Sasori can prepare or rest a little more till he's ready." He replied, but there is some distance in his words.

This change of his is actually more better since not only will he won't ever have to walk in or interrupt whatever it is that Sasori is doing, but it also so that he can rest and take a breather before he is given an order to do a task.

Especially when that "dream" felt so real, akin to that of a warning of the future or some sort.
