Is Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury the first anime series to depict a married same-sex couple?
Tumblr media
Given the rings and comments from the staff (excluding Bandai) it's pretty clear that both Suletta and Miorine are married. And looking at older anime couples I can't find another one where the characters are actually married to one another.
There are series that depict engagements and proposals (implied or otherwise with queer characters).
Some examples would be:
Yuri & Viktor from Yuri on Ice, where it's implied that they want to be engaged.
Tumblr media
Ranma & Akane from Ranma 1/2, both find themselves in an arranged engagement but end up falling for each other anyway. Ranma is canonically genderfluid in both the anime and manga and Akane is attracted to Ranma as both a man and a woman. And this is ignoring all of Ranma's other fiances who know about their curse and want to be in a relationship with them anyway.
Tumblr media
Utena & Anthy from Revolutionary Girl Utena, while the circumstances of their engagement are out of their control, the two of them fall deeply in love with one another despite that. And in the movie they kiss.
Tumblr media
Other LGBT anime couples are together or in love but next explicitly depicted as engaged or married would be:
Michiru Tenou & Haruka Kaiou from Sailor Moon, they are very much together and in the Crystal series end up living together and adopting a baby.
Tumblr media
Yukito Tsukishiro & Touya Kinomoto from Cardcaptor Sakura, who are in love with one another.
Tumblr media
Eiji Okumura & Ash Lynx from Banana Fish, who are in love with one another. And it hurts.
Tumblr media
Yuu Koito & Touko Nanami from Bloom Into You, who are two girls who fall in love with one another. And in the story you watch them grow and get closer.
Tumblr media
Nezumi & Shion from No. 6, a sci-fi drama where two boys fall in love. This one also hurts.
Tumblr media
And countless other examples, none of which I could find have the characters taking their relationship further than dating or engagement.
So, is Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury the first married same-sex couple in anime?
On a minor note, there have been several gay weddings depicted in manga.
Some examples would be:
Our Dreams At Dusk by Yuhki Kamatani, which was written by an asexual, X-gender author.
Tumblr media
Until I Meet My Husband by Ryousuke Nanasaki and illustrated by Yoshi Tsukizuki. This manga was written by a gay man and based on his own essays about his life. The manga is auto-biographical.
Tumblr media
I Married My Best Friend To Shut My Parents Up by Kodama Naoko, who has written several other LGBT manga, most of which are Yuri.
Tumblr media
And there are several more!
Bonus:
Shoutout to Episode 7 of the 80s anime Dirty Pair for having a wedding between a cis man and a trans woman in one episode.

I think the major problem when engaging with shippy stuff, especially as it pertains to Suletta and Miorine specifically, at least from my perspective as a veteran of multiple fandom shipping wars, is that shipping to me always carries the idea of wish fulfilment for when two characters have a great romantic chemistry or potential with each other but are not necessarily together in the text of the show/book/film/etc. or at the very least it isn't an intended focus.
So it is a bit of a problem when folks will put out shipping popularity polls and such and SuleMio will be featured in it while almost every other pairing is of the wish fulfilment variety, and like
Do they not just defacto win automatically? They are not a ship so much as they are a Canonically Married In The Text of Their Show Couple. In a Who is the Best Theoretical Couple Competition, I would imagine they'd have a pretty huge advantage in not being Theoretical. Is my view on what a ship even is wrong?
Like, maybe put them in a bracket featuring Haruka and Michiru and the Yuri on Ice guys and you might be on to something then.

Consider a setting where graduating from a certain school gives you the right to wield political power on a national level, depriving everyone who doesn’t attend of the right to vote, but the bottom third students of every year get transformed into magical slaves. How terribly would the Senshi or Overwatch crew handle that?
Okay, so, let's get this out of the way first: WHAT THE FUCK.
Now that we've taken that important break, let's think about this.
Do we know what they teach at this school? Because I think that would be a large part of my decision for this. Some of the cannier players in the game would enter if they thought they stood a chance, but by the very nature of the thing they ALSO know that the best of the best are going to go here. Do you think you're in the top 66% of 1000 driven and probably proven intelligent people? I mean, I probably would be like, "I guess I am a voteless worker bee."
So, for the purposes of this question, we'll assume it's a standard high school type setup, with, fuck, I'm just doing this for the purposes of answering. We'll use what was the AP track for each at my high school, because, well, I'm familiar with it.
Math : Algebra, Geometry, Trig, Calc
Science: Earth, Biology, Chemistry, Physics
English: Four years of upper level Literature courses focusing on analysis and knowledge of the canon.
History: (Insert country of origin here), Government, World i, World ii
Language: Four years of a language, I took Spanish.
And then we can make space for other shit. We had 6 periods a day, but not every day had to be the same. Whatever, we'll go with the guideline.
SAILOR MOON
Rei goes because Rei has never been humble for even one moment in her life, and also she wants to boss the entire country around. She knows that she is going to be in the top 66%, and also probably graduate first in the class, she's just that smart. Is she though???? We don't see one way or the other, and I think of her as a sort high-middling student, and in an environment like this one, I could see her maybe ending up on bottom.
Minako would never do it unless she was sure she could find a good way to cheat on everything. Minako's not stupid, but I do think she can be a little intellectually lazy. Sitting down and actually doing the work would take her aback a little bit, but I also think she knows that and also isn't too proud to admit, to herself at least, that she might be in danger there.
Michiru's family has so much money and influence that even if she can't vote, she can vote, so I don't see her willingly putting herself through that.
Haruka would not attend, but it would only be because Minako stopped her from some desperate and quasi-suicidal jaunt to prove herself worthy or some shit. She knows its dumb, Mina knows its dumb, but here she is, signing up for it! It seemed like a good idea at the time.
Overwatch:
Lena has laughed herself out of the building already. Thanks but no thanks. Voting isn't worth the entirety of a physics class and having to do well in it on top of everything else. She'll go wash glasses in a pub if she has to, goodbye.
Fareeha acknowledges that it is a difficult task, and it will encourage a high level of competition, but luckily, rigorous testing of her abilities is a boon in her eyes. She spends long nights studying and sharpening her acumen. Literature is never her strongest class, and she does worry about it, but she gets it together just fine, and is strong enough in everything else.
Mercy is the sort that is more than smart enough for this sort of thing, but I don't know that she would want to sign up for it because it just seems cruel. It seems wrong. She will, of course, be talked into taking a spot, because better someone with her scruples than someone chomping at the bit to have the power.
Dva is following Lena out the door but she's posting the whole reel to TikTok, including she and Lena popping babychams in the parking lot.

Sailor Uranus/Haruka & Sailor Neptune/Michiru: the canonical couple who have already suffered censorship that turned them into cousins. Sailor Uranus has already been transformed into a man, and she and Neptune have already been called cousins with their romantic scenes being greatly reduced.
Oerba Yun Fang & Oerba Dia Vanille: the two women who spent centuries asleep, were awakened and want to reunite and stay together at all costs. Due to the custom of their tribe, they use the name of the Oerba tribe in their name, which made many mistake them as relatives when in reality they have no blood connection. Initially Fanga would be a male character, I wonder if she were a man and had the same name and scenes with Vanille in the franchise there would still be people believing they were related... I doubt it.
Caulifla & Kale: very similar to the case of Fang & Vanille. Kale often calls Caulifla with forms of respect that some who don't understand Japanese culture mistake as proof that they are related, have the same place of origin and are extremely close, but again without any blood linking them despite the idiotic theories.
Elsa & Honeymaren: the case that a simple Google search would solve things. Elsa's mother is a member of the Northuldra Tribe and Honeymaren is a member of a Northuldra Tribe and this was enough for many people to consider a kinship even with the film's character Honeymaren saying the line: "This is from one of our oldest families" after seeing a scarf from Elsa's mother. If Elsa's mother's scarf was from Honeymaren's family she wouldn't say that impersonal phrase, she would say something else. But even if some don't understand this phrase, in 2020 the book “Frozen 2: Dangerous Secrets: The Story of Iduna and Agnarr” was released, which reveals the past of Iduna, who is Elsa's mother: Iduna, when she was 5 years old, had her entire family and tribe wiped out by invaders, so she was adopted by Yelana's tribe, which would later become Honeymaren and Ryder's tribe.
In fact, I think the title of this post should be: "Four sapphic ships that people say are cousins even though the work itself says and proves that there is no possibility of that".

Canon Polycule Showdown
(vote for your favorite! check the description if you don't know them)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: 1. Picture of Haruka, Michiru and Setsuna from Sailor Moon. 2. Picture of Ichika Hoshino, Saki Tenma, Shiho Hinomori, Honami Mochizuki from Project Sekai hugging. /end ID]
Meet the contestants!
Haruka/Michiru/Setsuna
Status: Implied
Description: Haruka and Michiru are canon in every version of Sailor Moon, and in Sailor Moon Eternal: The Movie Setsuna lives with them and co-parents a child with them.
Ichika/Saki/Shiho/Honami
Status: Implied
Description: Saki tells her brother she's going on a date with her girlfriends when talking about the rest of the group. Ichika mentions her parents met through a song and that her father told her he hopes she meets someone special through music as well; and she follows that up with "I guess that would be Saki, Honami and Shiho for me? Hehehe... uhm, but let's move on." The girls blush and tell Honami that something she said about them felt like "a secret confession". Saki makes a cake with Leo/Need (their band) cake toppers for Valentines Day. Ichika always brought Saki flowers when she was in the hospital, and Saki pressed them to keep them. They are extremely close childhood friends who grew distant in high school, while one of them (Saki) was in the hospital for a long time, but they reunite once again after Saki's return. The name Leo/Need comes from the meteor shower they watched together when they were little, the Leonids, mixed with "Need" because they need each other. The / in the middle is supposed to symbolize a shooting star.

Just see this in twitter by someone : "I'm starting to think maybe people should read actual BL manga. perhaps considering manga written with actual gay characters in it in addition to shipping m x m from whatever battle shounen you're into."
Like because of those subtext, there can be fanfics and fanarts, right? And then I decided to come here, your blog is really one of my comfort place....
Tumblr media
Comfort place!? This makes me want to carve out time to post infinitely more. 🥹 Even though it feels a bit aimless, I’m glad I could cultivate that for you and hope I can continue to do so.
RE: twitter, without context, it's hard to tell whether this person is earnestly recommending people to expand their interests into BL or if they're dumping on people who tend to support and identify queer shipping across other genres.
On the one hand, heavy agree that if you appreciate queer pairings of any kind to absolutely find media and stories that shows healthy (and authentic, if possible!) representation of whatever you're into. I feel like sometimes in BL, specifically, there’s a lot of toxicity or violence passed off as romance which is why I recommend being discerning. Here are some green flag recommendations and I kind of touch on the importance of identity through engaging with queer content by way of BL's featuring fudanshi's there. Isn't always the case, but it's a storyline I appreciate.
If the poster was side eyeing queer ships in "mainstream" or shonen stories... they should grow up. I've been in and out of fandom for like.. 20 years. There have always been people who recognize and popularize queer ships. Back in the day? Characters didn't even have to share the same show, universe or genre to end up in a crossover slash fic on Fanfiction.Net.
Don't get me wrong, I've definitely needlessly explored several crack theories or made off-base assumptions about a story for the sake of trying to guess at where it’s going. But I sometimes question people's competency for reading/watching comprehension when a particularly shitty hottake is making its rounds on social media. Like are we not watching the same thing?
Subtext does exist. I don't know that all authors are as elegant or intentional in its execution but if you're not bothering to consider the possibility, you're potentially missing out on critical pieces of a story you're choosing to invest hours/years of your life into! This isn't simply as it pertains to shipping but also picking up on critical exposition (Attack. On. Titan.) or even questioning whether the information we're getting as the reader or viewer is conveyed with any sort of narrator bias. Yes, this is absolutely a My Hero Academia call out. ✨
Queer coding does exist. Tons of reasons why queer characters aren't always explicitly identified as such. More often than not, there's some form of censorship. Whether at the editing level during manga production or when it comes time for manga/shows to be approved for international distribution (re: information that's lost in translation vs outright decisions to alter the flow of the story). Most glaring example of this that comes to mind is Haruka Tenou or "Sailor Uranus"/Michiru Kaiou or "Sailor Neptune. In addition to gratuitous name changes when Sailor Moon was pushed abroad, several countries would rather portray the two as unusually close relatives despite the clear romantic undertones exhibited whenever they were on screen together. Also, IDK why, but pretty sure I'd seen somewhere that, initially the creator of Naruto did want to canonize Sasuke/Naruto but, truth be told, I've never watched the series and that could have been a fanon theory I'd seen.
Overarching messages exist. Similar to the first point, a story is seldom just a story. More often than not, you're looking at some sort of social critique or opinion that's being expressed or explored through the story. To not bother thinking critically about what you choose to spend time in enjoying is a pretty bland way to miss the point of it.
When all else fails, it's not our fault that the only relationships most shonen mangaka focus on developing is the one between "rivals". That's it. If there were more dynamic characters or literally any consideration toward the depth of intimacy between the main character and whatever tritagonist female lead the male lead inexplicably ends up with (aside from the simple rationale that "she is the girl 🎀"), then maybe fans won't have to hone in on how the only agency, equality and intimacy is between the only two characters of substance. That was a mouthful but so are the overly poetic soliloquies shonen rivals inevitably share about one another.. ✨
I'm guessing this question might be related to the last anon ask about fanfics? I agree regarding the fact that subtext allows for a richer selection of fan art and fics. I think, depending on content, the motivation for reading fics will subsequently differ. For instance, I'm less likely to read fanfics for a romance series even if I sometimes write for them because the source material generally satisfies what I wanted from them. But fix it fics, angst and romance fics for shonen/seinen series'?? I'll definitely pick them up because, 1) there are usually unexplored relationship dynamics in the source material, 2) there are alternative domestic/fluff storylines you'd never see because the genre doesn't allow for it, 3) the canon plot is usually so devastating *cough, JJK, cough* that I need a respite, and/or, 4) the developing plot tends to have a lot of holes that writers can explore to craft uniquely compelling AU's and alternative plotlines that I wouldn't imagine.
Man, it's been a while since I nerded out and really took the time to bang out a rant. I've had so many thoughts bouncing around but just zero time. Thank you for your ask and the reminder that there's someone else out there in the shipping trenches. Stay safe out there, anon!

well now i have to copy paste and replace ‘tenoh haruka’ with ‘michiru kaioh’ obviously Character asks: that other one; 1, 3, 11, 16
LMAO ok you know what that's fair! (character ask meme)
Why do you like/dislike this character: Michiru aka Sailor Neptune while not in my Top Characters Of All Time is ALSO tattooed on my body because she's perfect she's flawless she's beautiful she's a FUCKING ASSHOLE and gives zero shits and all of that together is so good to me personally. I'm a sucker for a femme who is just here for her girlfriend and the rest of you can fucking eat it while also giving the appearance of a total gracious princess. Again I live in the 90s anime where Michiru was upfront about burning the world down if Haruka lives and if THAT ain't peak gay romance I don't know what is.
Least favorite canon thing about this character: I'm not a fan how in the manga she's kinda brushed aside to be sort of a prop or echo for Haruka. She's not given a lot of depth and individual character there imo but the manga isn't my favorite canon to live in so I don't.
Would you date this character: listen it would not be honest of me to say no because my past two relationships a) started over our mutual love of HaruMichi and b) were with women that shared a ton of character traits with Michiru. Michiru is not my EXACT type but she's pretty fucking close to it.
What's your least favorite ship for this character: Does Michiru get shipped with anyone else??? I guess Michiru with Mamoru but that's mostly as a consolation prize if someone ships HarUsa which. See Last Ask.

Friend, "ask me about ot3s I'll never go away"? I'm asking about ot3s 👀
hi! lol we would literally be here all day if i listed every single ot3 of mine and i'm sure there's plenty that wouldn't interest you if they're from fandoms you don't follow, but i'm gonna speak generally with a few examples: ot3s are great because I'm a multishipper and I love threesomes (and the occasional foursome/moresome) lol what can I say. Unless something is a squick for me I can usually find some way to make it square in my head. And I like gay stuff, so an MF is usually further enhanced for me by making it MFF or MMF (although i also like MMM and FFF). Sometimes there's also the appeal of just... weird or inconvenient sex. It's funny, it's experimental, where else can you get this kind of content. i love the vibe between Inu/Kag/Miroku in the early days of Inuyasha before Sango is introduced. i like Miro/Sango too but like, those three clowns might've hooked up pre-Sango days. and i often genuinely can't choose between one ship and another, or i don't want to write out a ship so that i can include another one. i like Ed/Ling from fma but i also love Winry and it's not out of this world to me that she'd be down for a threesome lol. (Actually the problem would be Ed... but I think he could be convinced.) For the other het ships i listed... Bat/Wonder Woman... like why not complete the trifecta and have SuperWonderBat? They are iconic for a reason and they're fun together. Actually this just works really well in general for American comics that have been so long-running each character has a multitude of possible ships, and probably some homoerotic tension with someone at some point? Other times i'm literally not interested unless it's an ot3, like something is missing without it? Tbh this tends to happen with underdeveloped het ships, when there's a rival/bff/villain character right there with whom the hero has plenty of development, but the creator also hasn't totally neglected the canon love interest (usually a female character who has been somewhat sidelined lol). That's your Sasu/Naru/Saku (Naruto), Inu/Kag/Koga (they teased Kag/Koga and I was kinda into it, but I need Inuyasha to also be there for me to get on board) and most of the canonical ships from the Final Fantasy canon. In general, if I'm supposed to be into a couple for ~aesthetic reasons~ or there is a ton of ship tease but no canonical confirmation, as with many rpgs of the 90s and 2000s, then I'm piling on all the aesthetics that appealed to me. If I'm feeling in the mood for something a bit more fucked up, fraught and ultimately doomed threesome is great: Link/Zelda/Ganondorf and Link/Midna/Zelda (Legend of Zelda), Anakin/Obi-Wan/Padme (Star Wars), Jean/Scott/Logan (X-Men) and Shinji/Kaworu/Asuka... even throw Rei in there, whatever (NGE). Finally there are ships for whom it just Makes Sense. Finn/Rey/Poe (Star Wars), Haruka/Michiru/Setsuna (Sailor Moon), Watanuki/Doumeki/Himawari (xxxHolic) just to name a few. Or ships featuring two people who are super horny and flirty in general that I can easily see adding a third (or fourth or many), which describes almost all the horny situations I'm submitting my main fandom (MASH) darlings to inside my brain and sometimes on paper. ftr there are ships for whom I think it truly doesn't work and if it's me saying that then trust me, I've tried. there's a good amount of ships I enjoy without it too, but i think i'm probably in the minority in that whenever i get into a fandom i'm holding three or more swatches up at time trying to figure out what can work.

Man I've said this before but it really is a fucking crime that one of the only canon trans magical girls in anime I know of is from fucking Mahou Shoujo Site. Aka the edgiest shit ever and the magical girls don't even get cool sparkly outfits. Someone please save Kiyo she deserves better than this.
And it's also a crime that the canon lesbians in that series are biological sisters, separated at birth.
Tumblr media
People always joke about Haruka and Michiru being labeled as "cousins" in the old english dub, but forget about Aya and Tsuyuno!
Also, Spoiler Alert: They are still together in the epilogue, and I won't be surprised if these two girls had sex with eachother. Kentarou is sick like that.

I know very little about Sailor Moon but I just saw discussion about Setsuna, Haruka and Michiru being in a polycule? I tried to look up if its canon but the closest I found is just that they start living together in the later arcs (which is a good sign!!)
Anyone here enough of a Senshi Expert™ to confirm or deny how canon it is?

5 Fandoms, 5 Ships
I was tagged by @imakemywings , thank you bestie!!! 💖💖💖😎
BNHA - Shouto Todoroki/Izuku Midoriya
I am obsessed with them. They literally live in my brain rent free. They're so sweet and feral. The Sports Festival really did change everything in the series. Izuku opened Shouto's eyes to make the fire quirk he had his own, and he hasn't been the same since (and neither have I). Izuku is Shouto's hero. He changed his life. Because of that, now Izuku has a best friend in Shouto (and let's be real, a boyfriend). These two are so ride or die for one another. Shouto constantly remembers what Izuku told him. Izuku can rely on Shouto because they're on the same frequency. Reckless. They'd follow each other into the dark.
Princess Tutu - Fakir/Ahiru
Ultimate enemies to friends to lovers. Fakir literally tried to kill Duck as Tutu like twice, he didn't care. But then he and Duck started working together and Duck changed his whole outlook. Fakir was still a jerk, but he grew softer and fonder of Duck, and he was so protective of her. Duck is Fakir's muse. He is able to write about her because he understands her, unlike Mytho, and she trusts him with his storytelling powers. Plus, Duck was really the only one who had real faith in Fakir as a knight. They're so sweet and tender with each other. (We were also baited and robbed of that kiss from the trailer.)
Sailor Moon - Haruka Tenoh/Michiru Kaioh
I have an entire blog just dedicated to SM and harumichi. That's how much I love them. Haruka was so hesitant to become a sailor scout and even dreamt about Neptune, but she eventually became one because Michiru saved her from a monster and also because she couldn't fight her own fate. They have an amazing dynamic and they trust each other wholeheartedly and work so well together. They are also on the same frequency and have the same goal. They are also very tender with each other, especially when they hold hands and Michiru tells Haruka she likes her hands. They also have Pure Hearts.
House MD - House/Wilson
I've watched this show since I was like 16 and I've always liked House and Wilson. They give off such a huge Old Married Couple vibe, it's fantastic. They can be stupidly toxic for one another, though lmfao rip. But they get along so well, the way they riff off each other is so golden. Plus, House gets jealous of Wilson's fluffy cat receiving more attention than him. 🙄
FMA - Edward Elric/Winry Rockbell
Probably the first OTP I fell in love with HARD. I've written a lot of stories for them. I have a fic collection of 101 stories, I think, plus one shots and some chapter fics I didn't finish, unfortunately, but the ideas are still there. They are ridiculous and I mean that in the sweetest way because Ed is horrible at expressing how he feels, so he proposed to Winry in terms of alchemy. And Winry was like girl, I'll just give you my whole life. LMFAO. This ship is amazing. Winry figures it out by herself. Nobody told her she loves Ed, she did that herself. She accepted it herself. She focuses on her work while also supporting Ed. Ed also does his part by protecting her, being there for her, trusting her skills, promising her that the next time he makes her cry it'll be with tears of joy, etc. They both did their part. They both played their roles in the story, stayed objective, and still managed to be there for each other. Winry is waifu for laifu 🫰. And Ed is so lucky to have her, he loves her. He was so flustered he recited the elements from the periodic table. What a DORK. I love them.
I'm tagging @tododeku-or-bust @an-aura-about-you @non-canon-central @fate-defiant @eclipsedrawsthings @greyladyblue 💖💖💖💖💖

What do you think of the Hermione/Bellatrix ship? Is it cursed™ or workable? Aside from that, do you have any favorite F/F ships?
I can't see Hermione/Bellatrix working in canon, but I do think they have an interesting potential! If the circumstances were different, they met when they were around the same age, such as studying in Hogwarts, and life pushed them together somehow, they could grow to develop a frustrated, love/hate relationship. I think Hermione would feel sorry for Bellatrix because of her narrow-mindness and complex family, and Bellatrix, in turn, would be enraged by this and offended by the fact that someone with Hermione's blood status dares to treat her without proper respect. They would clash a lot, but it could bring some interesting results.
About my favorite F/F ships: I'm a life-long fan of Haruka and Michiru, I even wrote some stories about them as a teen; I really like Villanelle and Eve from Killing Eve; another life-long obsession is Xena and Gabrielle, although there is a weird exception here. Every time I re-watch Xena, I do so wishing to see them in particular, but I end up shipping Xena and Ares much more :D Even though Xena and Gabrielle are literally soulmates. I love Nagisa and Shizuma from Strawberry panic, although I wish the relationship was more developed.
There is probably more, but these are the ones that immediately come to my mind.

The Youths want to know what f/f couples you would put in a March Madness-esque bracket. It is specifically couples not individuals, there is a similar Yaoi bracket going on right now. Competitors do not have to be anime thats just what its called, and they do not need to be canon either. You can have multiple competitors from the same fandom but try to keep it balanced
Boy am I the wrong person to bring this question to ahaha. I am the MARIANAS TRENCH of yuri couples. I love VERY DEEPLY, but not broadly. I don’t skip around in my interests and my ships! There are only a handful of f/f couples, of couples at all, really, that I would say I care about in any meaningful way. Even properties I really enjoy, a lot of the time, it isn’t about the lesbian pairing for me. That’s why I often ask if people want me to watch a show because it is TRULY GOOD, or because lesbians appear. I’m an old married lesbian. I have a fair amount of married lesbian friends. I enjoy having them! I don’t need to go to fiction to find the reality that lesbians can exist and have relationships.
BUT, if we are setting up this bracket.
Harumichi will win every time.
Because if I’m taking this as i understand it, it’s not about how I feel about any individual character in a couple, but how I feel about the couple as its own character, how their romantic relationship moves in its own way and affects them both and the people around them in its own way. For me, harumichi is the slam dunk for that. I am very very fond of Reinako, but I think of rei and Minako as two interesting and independent people hwo happen to end up together and if they didn’t, well, that would also be fine. I love them as a couple but it doesn’t feel like its own force of nature for me the way harumichi does. In the same way i adore Lena, she is one of favorite characters of all time, but she is essentially fully formed when she and emily get together and while they make each other happy and their relationship is lovely in the light of all that, and I enjoy writing it, it’s not the same.
I would probably place Pharah/Mercy in my slot two, but it’s mostly being carried by the fact that I think of Fareeha as being a huge mess in her very own way before she meets Angela, and even then it’s not just Angela’s love that changes her and moves her, it’s the family and camaraderie and very real love she finds within the new OW she helps create. It’s her CHOOSING to be better, as well, and I won’t take that from her and give it all to Angela. (While I absolutely WILL take that from Ms. Michiru Kaioh.)
Anyway, as far as I’m concerned, the best I could come up with would be an elite eight:
harumichi
pharah/mercy
reinako
lena/emily
lena/amelie (mostly for the horrific potential)
Okay i realize that is five, but as I sit here thinking about it…as far as relationships run this is the small handful that I really feel in my bones. There are relationships I really do like and often include, and very much consider my canon (Seiya/Usagi, Hana/Brigitte) and there are relatkionships I am fine with and am happy enough to include but its whatever (Makoami, Amelie/Sombra) but only a very small handful would I say belong on a greatest list in my heart at all.
Also, I’m not an ANTI-romance writer by any stretch of the imagination, but I wouldn’t say it’s a focus of what I write, either. I love to write romantic relationships! I think they are great, this is not at all me going “why can’t anyone write about friendshiiiiiiip??” i just in fact, do that. Because I love how Mina and Mcihiru chip away at each other as much as I love how Michiru would die, or kill, whichever is fine, for Haruka. I love that Angela teaches Fareeha that there is safety in love but I also want to see that reflected in the ways she and Lena play off each other. I think Haruka’s death is a tragedy for Mina as much as it is for Michiru. I think Lena’s great love for Winston is as moving as hers for Emily.
I’m more interested the art that people are in the reflections of all the people who love them. We are all kaleidoscopes, and one mirror can’t make that.
So i’m just not the right person to ask about all this.
But, you may say, Holligay you are way fucking overthinking this, all I meant was if you had any perspective as an old as to the couples you’d put on a fucking bracket for other people jesus Christ why is everything a fucking Annie Dillard essay with you. Okay, fair.
For the sake of brevity let’s call it a sweet sixteen, knowing that this is colored by my age and my exposure. These aren’t listed in any kind of order and it should be noted that plenty of these are couples I don’t like particularly or don’t care about, just what I think might rightly BE on a best of list.
Harumichi
Xena/Gabrielle
Willow/Whatever the name of her girlfriend is, I can’t remember
Utena/Anthy
Catra/Adora
Cagney/Lacey
Korra/the other one, you who know who I mean
Lena/Kara
Harley/Ivy
Eve/Villanelle
Ruby/Sapphire
Did people ship Elphaba and Glinda? I feel like they MUST have. Though I just googled Elphaba slashfic and it was inconclusive. The kids today don’t say slashfic, do they? I’m old
Pharah/Mercy
Bette/Tina
Santana/Brittany
Me/A bowl of soup
I don’t know who would reign triumphant, it would depend on how we were voting. I mean if I put it on tumblr it would be one of the contemporary couples like Korra and whoever she is, but I don’t know that I think that’s fair to the sheer historical value of, say, Xena and Gabrielle, or even, though Glee became a joke, the way Santana and Brittany were at the time. It’s hard to evaluate things that bridge something like what, forty years on this list? But this is what I would put it out as, if I had to do it right now, gun to my head

Sailor Moon (90s anime show)
More specifics under the cut because spoilers...
I think there is support of this in the canon, but not nearly quite as I articulated it here which I have stolen from @docholligay and her fic/interpretation of Michiru Kaioh/Sailor Neptune. In canon, we see Sailor Neptune show up to fight off a monster that's transformed in front of Haruka. Haruka's Sailor Uranus wand appears before her, and Michiru tells her not to take it. This is after Michiru has previously attempted to interact with Haruka on several occasions, and Haruka has seemed to want to be left alone, wanting to just be left to live her own life, seeming to deny the fate that would twine her and Michiru together.
Now, we can take Michiru at face value if we want, but Doc does not take it so and I love this interpretation. Michiru knows Haruka just enough to know that she can't not stand in when someone is suffering, especially someone who tried to save her first. So Michiru tells her not to take it and engages the monster in battle. Point to Doc, Neptune may not be showy with her powers skills, so it can fade to the background, but she is consistently very skilled at, if nothing else, gracefully getting the fuck out of the way. But she doesn't here. One of, if not the only, very few times she can't dodge a direct attack.
So Haruka has to save her. She didn't have to get involved, didn't seem to want to get involved, and since nobody 'awoke' Michiru, she probably could have gone on without Haruka. But she doesn't, and seals their entwined fates.
I really wish I could have found a fic of Doc's that articulates this, but Tumblr searches are hell and all the key words I'd use to find such a post are all over her blog XDXDXD

Note
001 for Sailor Moon
Favorite character: Minako Aino.
Least Favorite character: Kakeru Ōzora.
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Usagi/Mamoru, Haruka/Michiru, Ail/An, Luna/Artemis, and Rei/Minako.
Character I find most attractive: Setsuna Meioh/Sailor Pluto.
Character I would marry: Hotaru Tomoe.
Character I would be best friends with: Ami Mizuno.
a random thought: I’m so glad Ikuhara and Igarashi went on to do their own things after their work on the Sailor Moon anime ‘cause they on their own and together just weren’t entirely right for the series the same way Junichi Sato was.
An unpopular opinion: Sailor Moon Crystal wasn’t all bad, mainly due to the second half being a lot stronger than the first.
My Canon OTP: Haruka/Michiru.
My Non-canon OTP: Rei/Minako.
Most Badass Character:.Sailor Saturn.
Most Epic Villain: The Nemesis clan and Death Phantom, though Sailor Galaxia comes really close.
Pairing I am not a fan of: A good few, but first and foremost, Usagi/Seiya. What were they thinking there?
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): Lots of the villains in the different mediums. In the manga I wasn’t too fond of the non-Kunzite Shittenou, the Spectre Sisters, and the Dead Moon Circus, and in the anime they screwed up the Witches 5, Queen Nehelania in Stars, and the Shadow Galactica group, mainly the Sailor Animites.
Favourite Friendship: Usagi and Naru.
Character I most identify with: Ami Mizuno.
Character I wish I could be: Tuxedo Mask!
