Hello my mutual who I am speaking to behind a mask like some sort of Witness. I have a question that I bet you can't answer but some of your followers/other mutuals might be able to....
Does anyone have resources on free self-taught Middle Egyptian? I have found egyptianhieroglyphs[dot]net which has been a great starting point - and I am very much at the start of my learning. but I am hoping to find more... like... a glossary of glyphs or a pluralizing chart?
Thank you Reid and all your followers.

Hmm I'm gonna defer this one to my two favorite egyptologists, @rudjedet and @thatlittleegyptologist. Specifically I know that Lottie has a very good resource post about Ancient Egytpain Linguistics, as well as all sorts of other information in her faq. That might be a good place to start.
You might also try looking on JSTOR for linguistic texts about Middle Egyptian? (@jstor my beloved, how are you today?)

These translations aren’t so daily anymore, but here’s another by Mahmoud Darwish.

The lessons have been going great! Anyway, here’s how you can say “I’m going to bite somebody” in Middle Egyptian:
Tumblr media
Transliteration: iw·i r psḥ s. A way to pronounce it: Yewi er peseh sa.
I used the reed feather for a suffix pronoun instead of the seated man glyph or seated woman glyph because I think individuals of all genders should be able to express their desire to sink their teeth into people in dead languages.
Oh also featuring my clumsy chicken scratch hieratic:

(This is written right to left, unlike the above glyphs which are written left to right)

So, I decided, what the heck, I’ll actually start a full yugioh reread. And of course I stop on the first page.
Tumblr media
[Image description: An intro page about the shadow games, done in an ancient Egyptian style. End description]
So on the one hand, we know that Yugioh’s ancient Egyptian mythology was not necessarily extensively researched ahead of time, since it infamously originally took place “5000 years ago” until that was corrected to “3000 years ago.” But that only emphasizes to me that Takahashi must have referenced actual hieroglyphs for this, since they are all more or less legit. I am not sure if they actually mean anything and I’m not going to harass the egyptologists on this site about it lol.
Also, if I remember right, hieroglyphs are usually facing (eg the animal face) the direction that you start to read from. So if the bird is looking to the left, you read left-to-right - and vice versa. This is following that rule with one exception.
Plus, the whole thing seems like an obviously referenced image, probably from the book of the dead. Like, for comparison’s sake, here’s the Anubis/anpu from the British Museum (not complimentary):
Tumblr media
[Image description: Anubis on papyrus. End description]
This text also has the gods up top in a row like the Yugioh illustration has. But I’m not seeing that the hieroglyphs match anywhere.
The museum lists that this papyrus in particular was exhibited in Japan in 1990-91. Yugioh came out in ‘96.
Of course, it could be that there was some specific text Takahashi had access to at a local museum that aren’t widely available online, or that he was referencing a book that also is not widely online. He might have just picked hieroglyphs at random and smushed them together, but I’m not sure that they’re 100% random. I’m kind of wondering now what resources Japan had in 1996 re: egyptology. (We know Takahashi liked some English properties but as far as I know, we have no reason to think he’s fluent in anything but Japanese?) The book of the dead on Wikipedia actually linked to a Japanese game themed after the subject but it was published 2 years after Yugioh first ran in print.
Btw, here’s the text on the cover of the first YGO volume - when I first saw it, I thought maybe that phrase in the middle was a corruption of Ankh-wedja-snb but now, looking closer, I’m not as sure.
Tumblr media
[Image description: Cover with hieroglyphs behind Yugi’s head. End description]
The other hieroglyphs appearing incidentally are totally different - although that is definitely the ankh wedja snb phrase on the left. The inclusion of so many determinatives is what makes me think this wasn’t a fake cipher-style “turn your name into ancient egyptian!” translation for japanese.

WAIT-
If Pariah Dark is kept in the Sarcophagus of Forever Sleep, would that mean that Tucker, in some way, has power over it? Because of the whole pharaoh thing? The Sarcophagus is unknown in origin, but what if it came from the deities of Egypt? Could it have been known as something else before falling into the hands of the Observants?

Bashi-bazouks before a Gateway by Paul Joanowits
Bashi-bazouks were irregulars in the Ottoman army and hailed from lands across the Ottoman empire, from Egypt to the Balkans. The two soldiers converse in an Egyptian setting, the gate topped by Mamluk carvings and flanked by East African 'Grandees' chairs', amalgams of Mamluk, Portuguese, and Indian influence.

She was soo disappointed when this opportunity came up, COVID hit. Eureka this time the trip went off without a hitch. So of course I asked to share some of her photos of the trip. Some not so clear as they taken on her iPhone
