FS1 Taps The VCC for Third Consecutive Year to Corral Live Remote Guests for ‘The Herd with Colin Cowherd’
Tumblr media
By making high-quality live remotes by smartphone easy for guests and show producers, VCC Caller Cloud helps FS1 daily talk show The Herd keep sports conversation fresh and timely.
The VCC (The Video Call Center) today announced that for the third year in a row it has received a contract extension from leading national 24-hour multi-sport cable channel FS1. In particular, FS1 relies on VCC Caller Cloud – a white-glove service for bringing live guests to air from anywhere in the world – for the daily studio show ‘The Herd with Colin Cowherd’.
“The sports world moves fast, which means that we often don’t know until the last minute what guests will be the most relevant for that day’s show. The VCC gives producers and talent bookers for The Herd flexibility and confidence to reach out to the most relevant sports figures at a moment’s notice. VCC’s Call producers are a polished, professional, and seamless part of our show staff. The VCC is an integral part of the look and feel of The Herd.”
Mike Wilken, Senior Vice President, Systems and Technology.
VCC’s Caller Cloud solution is a complete solution that combines patented technologies and the support of expert video call producers to add live remote contribution to live television production. To date, Caller Cloud has been used to deliver more than 20,000 remotes for streaming, cable, and broadcast programs. Caller Cloud removes complexity for busy, remote guests by eliminating the need to download anything to their device. VCC’s well-regarded AirFirstTM platform makes connecting as easy as clicking a link sent to them by text or email. VCC’s exclusive technologies enhance and stabilize the connection between guests and the production so that the guest is comfortable, looks great, and can engage in uninterrupted conversation with a show’s cast.  Because VCC’s Call-Producers perform their function across many clients, their experience level is among the highest in the industry.
VCC CEO Larry Thaler said, “Today’s live studio shows need both speed and quality when it comes to connecting with live guests. At the VCC, our job is to eliminate the need for producers to compromise between those two requirements. Whether The Herd wants to reach a busy coach in their office on game day or an A-list celebrity on vacation in an exotic locale, the VCC makes it happen. If the guest has a smartphone and an Internet connection, the VCC can facilitate great conversation. We are thrilled to have again earned the long-term trust of the FS1 team.”
To experience the VCC in action, watch ‘The Herd with Colin Cowherd’ on FS1, Monday-Friday from 12:00 to 3:00 PM ET Eastern.
VCC Caller Cloud white glove service is available immediately. For information and to get started contact [email protected]

''Making Music Your Business: A Guide For Young Musicians'' by David Ellefson
-Foreword-
The idea of this book came to me during the recording of the Megadeth album Youthanasia, and throught every phase of that album-and-tour cycle, I found myself inspired to write chapters pertaining to the events that were happening around me. My aim was not to write a how-to book, strictly speaking, but rather to share some insights and experiences that might aid aspiring artists who wish to develop careers in the mad enterprise we call the "music industry".
Throughout the Youthanasia tour, I was posting daily updates from the road on the Megadeth Arizona World Wide Web site on a page called "The Obituary". Toward the end of the tour, I recived an e-mail from Jim Roberts of Bass Player, asking me if I would like to write for the magazine. I was honoured by the invitation to contribute to such a prestigious and respected magazine, and accepted the offer. As we talked about my new collum, I told Jim about this book and he suggested I contact the book division of the magazine's publisher, Miller Freeman, Inc. A short while later, we agreed on a deal to publish the book.
In addition to writing about my own experiences, I interviewd a number of other artists hoping their insights would helpto expand some of the points I was making. As you'll notice, all of the artists I spoke with have put in years and years of hard work to achieve their success. I found this to be very inspiring, especially since we live in an age of sound bites where you can be here today and gone later if you play by everyone else's rules!
Many people contributed to this book. I especially want to thank my wife, Julie, for her painstaking efforts in helping me to edit the original manuscript. I'd also like to thank my son, Roman; my mother, Frances; my late father, Gordon; and my brother, Eliot. Thanks also to Jim Roberts, Matt Kelsey, Jan Hughes, Dave Mustaine, Marty Friedman, Nick Menza, Mike Renault, Bud Prager, Brett Merritt, Gene Kirkland, Pete Cronin, Mike Varney, Val Janes, Suzan Crane, Billy Sheehan, Will Lee, Chrissie Hynde, Norma Bishop and GailForce Management, Slash, Tom Maher, Tori Amos, Donna Jaffe, Spivak Entertaiment, Ken Hensley, Andy West, Dave Pomeroy, Joey Ramone, Ira Lippy, Larry Wallack, Bob Mothersbaugh, Bob Timmons, Audrey Strahl, Gina Rainville, Carla White, Joe Dicoccio, EMI Music Publishing, Evelyn Buckstein and BMI, Hendrik Huigen, Andy Somers, Dave Downey, Doug Thaler, Skip Rickert, Jeff Yonker, Jerry Giefer and Greg Carlson. This list could never really be complete because of the many people who have helped me in my musical career over the last 20 years. Thank you for your enthusiasm and for fueling my own spirit and passion for music.
God Bless,
David Ellefson

Now available on:

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a children's book by Eric Carle.
As far as research has been able to take us, Mason seems to think that he was mistaken that he was thinking of any specific bookworm. He has since realized that bookworms are just a trope and come in dozens of different clip art versions.
Mason definitely knew what Kid Pix was. Kid Pix is a bitmap drawing program aimed at children. Originally created by Craig Hickman, it was first released for the Macintosh in 1989 and subsequently published in 1991 by Brøderbund. Hickman was inspired to create Kid Pix after watching his son Ben struggle with MacPaint, and thus the main idea behind its development was to create a drawing program that would be very simple to use.
The type of Microsoft Office WordArt that Mason was referring to was Style 29.
Larry is an "editor" of Game Grumps. He was first introduced on January 5th, 2015 on the 74th episode of Pokemon FireRed. Larry's font of choice is red Comic Sans with a green drop shadow. Larry was sometimes used as an alias by Barry and/or Kevin when they didn't want to reveal who edited a joke.
You used to be able to go into Speech Properties and go to the Text to Speech section. Alex never noticed that there was a drop-down box where you could switch voices. Microsoft Sam seems to no longer exist, in Windows 10 there is Microsoft David, Microsoft Zira, and Microsoft Mark.
Oliver Babish is the name of the character on The West Wing.
Burn Notice's title refers to the burn notices issued by intelligence agencies to discredit or announce the dismissal of agents or sources who are considered to have become unreliable. The show is about a spy recently disavowed by the U.S. government using his special ops training to help others in trouble.
Last Fan Standing is the game show where four comic convention attendees face off in a test of pop-culture knowledge. It is hosted by Bruce Campbell and is theoretically still going, though it last toured in 2018.
Nickelodeon is a 1976 comedy film directed by Peter Bogdanovich, and stars Ryan O'Neal, Burt Reynolds and Tatum O'Neal. According to Bogdanovich, the film was based on true stories told to him by silent film directors Allan Dwan and Raoul Walsh. Based in 1914, the movie is about the ever changing career path of Leo Harrigan as he tries to become a pioneering effort in Hollywood's budding film industry.
The nickelodeon was the first type of indoor exhibition space dedicated to showing projected motion pictures in the United States. Usually set up in converted storefronts, these small, simple theaters charged five cents for admission and flourished from about 1905 to 1915. "Nickelodeon" was concocted from nickel, the name of the U.S. five-cent coin, and the ancient Greek word odeion, a roofed-over theater, the latter indirectly by way of the Odéon in Paris, emblematic of a very large and luxurious theater, much as the Ritz was of a grand hotel. Nickelodeon the kid's channel took their name from this.
Will Smith performed the song "Switch" at the 18th Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards (2005).
The Black Lagoon Adventures Series was written by Mike Thaler and illustrated by Jared Lee. It featured the central character of Hubie, a new student who enters a haunted elementary school and faces menacing monsters, fierce animals, and bullies.
Fat Cat on a Mat is a children's book by Phil Roxbee-Cox and originally published in 1999 so it is not new.
Duplex is a 2003 American black comedy film directed and narrated by Danny DeVito, and starring Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore.
Alex was extremely wrong, and Dirty Jorts Joe appeared in our guesses in episode 9. Since then we have made a comprehensive guess list which we will be sharing.

Here’s what went down on this date in music. Lots of stuff…
January 28th
1956 - Elvis Presley
Elvis Presley (with Scotty Moore and Bill Black), made his first National Television appearance on the Dorsey brother's "Stage Show". It was the first of six appearances on the show and the first of eight performances recorded and broadcast from CBS TV in New York City. After the success of their first appearance they were signed to five more in early 1956.
1965 - The Who
The Who made their first appearance on UK TV show Ready Steady Go! To project the desired image, the hand-picked audience consisted only of teens dressed in the current Mod fashion.
1968 - The Doors
Jim Morrison of The Doors was arrested and charged with public drunkenness after harassing a security guard at a Las Vegas adult movie theatre.
1977 - Pink Floyd
Pink Floyd's tenth studio album Animals entered the UK charts at No.2. The sleeve concept was that of Roger Waters, who lived at the time near Clapham Common, and regularly drove past Battersea Power Station. A view of the imposing but disused former power station building was chosen for the cover image, complete with massive inflatable pig suspended between two of the towers.
1978 - Van Halen
Van Halen released their first single, a cover of The Kinks' ‘You Really Got Me’. The Kinks' Dave Davies has claimed to dislike Van Halen's rendition of the song and stated of how a concert-goer once approached him after a live Kinks show and congratulated him on performing a "great cover of the Van Halen song."
1978 - Fleetwood Mac
The Fleetwood Mac album Rumours went to No.1 on the UK album chart. The groups eleventh studio album went on to sell over 45 million copies world-wide and spent over 440 weeks on the UK chart. The songs 'Go Your Own Way', 'Dreams', 'Don't Stop', and 'You Make Loving Fun' were released as singles.
1983 - Billy Fury
British Rock & Roll singer Billy Fury died of heart failure aged 42. An early British rock and roll (and film) star, he equalled the Beatles' record of 24 hits in the Sixties , and spent 332 weeks on the UK chart, without a chart-topping single or album. His We Want Billy (released in 1963, with The Tornados) was one of the first live albums in British rock history. Fury later played rock 'n' roller "Stormy Tempest" in the film That'll Be The Day along side David Essex and Ringo Starr.
1984 - Frankie Goes To Hollywood
Frankie Goes To Hollywood started a five-week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Relax!' BBC Radio 1 DJ Mike Read expressed on air his distaste for both the record's suggestive sleeve and its lyrics, he announced his refusal to play the record, not knowing that the BBC had decided that the song was not to be played on the BBC anyway. Produced by Trevor Horn the song remained on the chart for 48 weeks.
1984 - Motley Crue
Backstage after a Motley Crue show in Buffalo, New York, Tommy Lee found out that his girlfriend has posed for the current issue of Penthouse magazine without his knowledge, after a fan passed comment on the pictures. Tommy punched the fan unconscious with one hit, Motleys manager Doug Thaler later convinced the fan not to press any charges.
1990 - Paul Abdul
Paul Abdul started a 10-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with 'Forever Your Girl'. Abdul spent sixty-four consecutive weeks on the Billboard 200 before hitting number one, making it the longest time for an album to reach the number one spot.
1994 - Paul McCartney
Paul and Linda McCartney attended the premiere of Wayne's World II in London. The couple then went on to Hard Rock Cafe, where the film star Mike Myers presented them with a cheque for LIPA (the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts) for £25,000 ($42,500) from the sale of Linda's vegetarian burgers.
2004 - Elvis Presley
Elvis Presley fans expressed their anger at plans to cut up a rare tape of the singer's early songs and sell the snippets at auction. The tape, which featured a recording made by Presley during the early 1950s, was now too fragile to play. US firm Master Tape Collection said the tape would be cut into two-inch snippets and sold for £270 ($460) each.
2005 - Jim Capaldi
English drummer and singer songwriter Jim Capaldi died of stomach cancer aged 60. He co-founded Traffic with Steve Winwood who had the 1967 UK No.2 single 'Hole In My Shoe'. Capaldi also had the solo 1975 UK No.4 single 'Love Hurts'. Capaldi also worked with Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and George Harrison.
2009 - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Lynyrd Skynyrd keyboard player Billy Powell died at the age of 56 of a suspected heart attack in Florida. Powell called police saying he was having trouble breathing and emergency services tried to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead an hour later. Powell had missed a doctor's appointment on the day before his death; the appointment was for a checkup on his heart. He played piano on Kid Rock's 'All Summer Long' (which sampled the Lynyrd Skynyrd song 'Sweet Home Alabama').
2015 - Sly Stone
Funk legend Sly Stone was awarded $5m (£3.3m) in missed royalties by a Los Angeles court. The singer claimed his former manager, Gerald Goldstein, and lawyer, Glenn Stone, had cheated him out of earnings dating back more than 20 years. In 2011, it was reported he was homeless and living in a camper van after falling on hard times and fighting drug addiction problems.
2015 - Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler was arrested after officers were called to the Corkscrew Saloon on the Furnace Creek Ranch in Death Valley National Park, California. The 65 year-old bassist was arrested for misdemeanour assault, public intoxication and vandalism after a fight broke out in the bar.
2016 - Signe Toly Anderson
American singer Signe Toly Anderson died aged 74. She was one of the founding members of the American rock band Jefferson Airplane. She sang on the first Jefferson Airplane album, Jefferson Airplane Takes Off, most notably on the song 'Chauffeur Blues'.
2016 - Paul Kantner
American guitarist, singer and songwriter, Paul Kantner died in San Francisco at the age of 74 due to multiple organ failure and septic shock after he suffered a heart attack days earlier. He was known for co-founding Jefferson Airplane, the leading psychedelic rock band of the counterculture era, and its more commercial spin-off band Jefferson Starship. With Jefferson Airplane, Kantner was among the performers at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1966 and the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and the Woodstock Festival in 1969.

UK appeals court rules AI cannot be listed as a patent inventor
Add the United Kingdom to the list of countries that says an artificial intelligence can’t be legally credited as an inventor. Per the BBC, the UK Court of Appeal recently ruled against Dr. Stephen Thaler in a case involving the country’s Intellectual Property Office. In 2018, Thaler filed two patent applications in which he didn’t list himself as the creator of the inventions mentioned in the documents. Instead, he put down his AI DABUS and said the patent should go to him “by ownership of the creativity machine.”
The Intellectual Property Office told Thaler he had to list a real person on the application. When he didn’t do that, the agency decided he had withdrawn from the process. Thaler took the case to the UK’s High Court. The body ruled against him, leading to the eventual appeal. "Only a person can have rights. A machine cannot," Lady Justice Elisabeth Laing of the Appeal Court wrote in her judgment. "A patent is a statutory right and it can only be granted to a person."
Thaler has filed similar legal challenges in other countries, and the results so far have been mixed. In August, a judge in Australia ruled inventions created by an AI can qualify for a patent. However, only earlier this month, US District Judge Leonie M Brinkema upheld a decision by the US Patent and Trademark Office that said “only natural persons may be named as an inventor in a patent application." Judge Brinkema said there may eventually be a time when AI becomes sophisticated enough to satisfy the accepted definitions of inventorship, but noted, “that time has not yet arrived, and, if it does, it will be up to Congress to decide how, if at all, it wants to expand the scope of patent law.”

Wait, do vaccine lotteries really work?
Wait, do vaccine lotteries really work?

United Airlines would it’s a lot like people start flying in airplanes. They stopped during the pandemic, almost ten times more flew to the United States the Memorial Day weekend of 2019, the Before Times, like the same three days of 2020. This is a problem for United, because air travel is, like everything, all United.
This company would also very much like people flying in planes to be vaccinated against Covid-19. Not that planes and airports are crucibles of infection! Definitely not, probably. But vaccines are, we agree, a social good. Almost everyone wins, except germs.
But United does not want to require vaccination. People get so angry. So earlier this year, the big corporations started brainstorming ideas to encourage people to get vaccinated. and also fly unit. His idea: to give a reward to everyone who gets their shots. Maybe a few thousand miles of frequented spots? It is the equivalent of the airline donut, oa beer. You can have it, as a delight.
But no. “There were a good number of people involved who, I would say, are heavily supported by the marketing science group within United who said,‘ Actually, this is not the right path, ’” says Luc Bondar, vice president of United marketing and chairman of the airline ‘s frequent flyer program, MileagePlus. “You may have crashed an executive meeting to say there is a different way. And, based on a good discussion, we agreed on a very aligned approach with behavioral science. ”
This approach is a damn big lottery. Prove that you are vaccinated and join MileagePlus and you could win a year of travel for two first class. Now, probably no to win. But even so, this is a high-value goal. They have warm nuts. “It simply came to our notice then. Do we want to give something true, but small, ”Bondar says,“ in front of going out with a draw? “
Bondar proposed a Willy Wonka golden ticket experience, “and the fact that we talked between you and me, I think, is proof that we got it right,” he says. In the first 48 hours, United had more than 400,000 subscribers and more than 100,000 new signups to MileagePlus. Although Bondar has not yet deleted the data, he believes the dates of the vaccine cards that the rookies hung will show that a significant number got their shots after the award was announced. It’s a good guess, as lotteries with big cash prizes have led to a similar increase in vaccination rates in half a dozen U.S. states, including those run by Republicans. Ohio, Led by Democrats California, and anything-hell-is-happening Oregon. (In Ohio, week-long shots dropped 25 percent before Gov. Mike DeWine announced that five lucky shooters would earn $ 1 million and teens could get full scholarships. The downhill slope became an uphill slope with a 49% increase in vaccinations among Ohio residents 16 and older.) Some life-changing rewards may turn out to be just what can get Americans with hesitations up their sleeves. This is just science. Well, economy. But still. It actually works.
Maybe not make sure, the idea that public health officials (or airlines) resort to, let’s be honest, baffling means of driving crowds to a scientifically wonderful trait that prevents a life-threatening disease. You’d think the grand prize would be “don’t die”.
In fact, this is not how people make such decisions. Some people are very motivated to get vaccinated. Some people are very motivated not to. But some people may see the whole issue as a little more uncomfortable for them than useful for society. As Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein wrote in their book Empenyér—An updated version comes out in August — when people feel that way, getting them to do the thing anyway requires making it easier for them. It helps if you also make these things fun. “Lotteries are fun. It’s like a cheap dream, ”says Thaler, a Nobel Prize-winning economist at the University of Chicago, when asked about vaccine lotteries.
