Merry Christmas, Yuletide felicitations, ¡Feliz Navidad!, Joyeux Noël! Buon Natale! to all my wonderful followers. I hope for all those who celebrate you have a wonderful, magical and peaceful time over the next few days. To those who don't celebrate I wish you all love and that you are safe and full of joy all the same.

I wrote the following during NaNoWriMo, I wanted it posted yesterday or a few days ago, but Christmas eve is better than not at all. 🎄

How the Vets prepare for Christmas

Erwin

A lot of reading, he especially enjoys reading by the fireplace with a hot mug of spiced cider or mulled wine. He can sit uninterrupted for hours on end, quite content with the words of a book helping him to escape into another world for a short while.

Erwin gets his Christmas cards out early, he loves writing them whilst listening to Christmas music. He will include a round robin letter informing everyone of what he’s been up to after the past year, he also uses it as a chance to make amends and try to build bridges with others.

Simple and tasteful, traditional decorations. Will weave his own wreath and make a beautiful centrepiece for the table with foraged holly, ivy and pinecones.

The wreath goes up on his front door early, he likes his home to appear welcoming to anyone visiting.

Levi

The home has to smell wonderful 24/7, he has stove top potpuri which he redoes every few days and heats over the fireplace in the lounge.

Plenty of scented candles too, he loves the smell of spiced apple and orange.

Gets his Christmas shopping done in one trip, he detests it but would rather have one, long difficult and stressful day than many, this way he can forget about it.

Wraps his presents with meticulous care and love. They all have holly or other plant based decorations tied into the ribbon.

Levi’s advent candle would be a simple one with pictures behind each window. The morning routine in December is to wake up, make a nice tea, ideally something winter and seasonal, and then sit down at the kitchen table and open the day’s door whilst sipping tea.

Hanji

Chaotic Christmas shopper, everything is done in bits across multiple days and she ends up with more presents than she needs for everyone.

Has a very traditional Christmas tree, but some of the other decorations around her home are a little more out there, she likes to try out modern trends as well as making some quirky decorations of her own.

Christmas cards are delivered a few days before Christmas, many of them are from the years previous.

Loves a pantomime and Christmas parties, any excuse to let their hair down for once, to dress up and laugh or dance, Hanji will fully embrace the season and let herself go.

Mike

Christmas Shopping is a careful operation that he’s been planning for since early November. Typically if he sees items throughout the last few months of the year he will buy them and so come December he isn’t overwhelmed with so much to buy. Additionally he finds it stops him from buying under pressure and ending up with items he isn’t even sure the individuals will like. Instead the presents are purchased with love and plenty of though.

Similar to Erwin, traditional and tasteful decorations in his home. He prefers a real Christmas tree and isn’t particular about a colour theme. He’ll try to buy a new decoration every year to mark the year that has passed. He can recall where each and every one came from and the stories behind them. If he can purchase them whilst away in a different country all the better.

Mike likes to be the one to cook Christmas dinner, he has a Christmas chef’s apron and hat. He knows that Erwin also enjoys cooking but Erwin works harder than all of them throughout the year so Mike just wants to give him a break on the big day.

Organises or takes part in charity present drives and wants to do as much to help others as possible. Afterall it is the season. He is especially

Loves a Christmas jumper.

Moblit

Shopping is done throughout December on a few trips, all of them planned and less chaotic than the ones Hanji goes on.

Enjoys more silver, white, blue Christmas deorations and goes for that ‘Winter Wonderland’ sparkle and ice theme in his home. But somehow he still makes it cosy.

Is a fan of hot chocolate with lots of marshmallows and also some spiced rum or whiskey.

Loves Christmas music and can be found by the Christmas tree singing along as he wraps presents with great big bows. Is a big fan of bows on everything, even his Christmas jumper has a bow on it.

Winter walks are very much one of his things, he loves being outside especially on sunny but crisp days where frost gently covers all the grass and plants. He loves going on these walks with his friends, but is also happy to spend some time alone thinking about the year which is nearly over, being reflective and thinking on what he’d love from the following year. He will also gather some fir branches, holly and other plants to display in his home.

Nanaba

Christmas is a time to get cosy and be relaxed, she doesn’t want to be stressing about last minute Christmas presents or the food. So she has a Christmas organiser and everything is incredibly well planned.

She loves Red and Gold, everything to be traditional and warm. Has one of the houses with a smoking chimney, the incense cones she uses are the myrrh and frankincense ones.

Loves lighting candles, all red and green, if they’re spiced all the better.

Big fan of Christmas Hallmark movies and just wants to get under a blanket and watch them with a mulled wine or hot chocolate whilst wearing big animal slipper socks.

Loves Ice skating and will succeed in encouraging the others to join her even if they’re a little nervous, Nanaba knows how to help her friends relax and feel at ease.

Foreign policy pundits have been calling for a rethink to counter Washington’s alleged groupthink. There’s a certain truth in that. But one element has been missing from the mainstream of the new doves on China: human rights. Without this, their words can end up sounding hollow—especially to the victims.

Two recent events prompted new levels of concern. First, on Feb. 4, U.S. President Joe Biden made the decision to shoot down a Chinese surveillance balloon after it flew across U.S. territory. Second, a new committee in Congress, the House select committee on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), held its first public hearing on Feb. 28. It was the assessment by Rep. Mike Gallagher that the CCP posed an “existential” threat, and the seeming bipartisan agreement to the assessment, that set off alarm bells.

Prominent foreign affairs commentators Fareed Zakaria and Edward Luce accused the new bipartisan consensus of groupthink that could lead to war. Max Boot warned of “bipartisan alarmism” and called for a nuanced assessment of the CCP’s threat. On April 5, a group of prominent American former officials and CEOs, including former U.S. ambassadors to China, published an open letter to Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping urging them to “work diligently to repair and stabilize the state of affairs between our two countries.”

The common denominator to these op-eds and open letter seemed to be the perception that U.S.-China relations have gone dangerously off track. And indeed, while the CCP may pose a severe challenge to the United States, Washington needs to have a well thought out strategy, should not blame China for its domestic ills, and should not needlessly forsake opportunities for communication and cooperation with China.

But, for a real check on groupthink and a more nuanced perspective to win the day, policymakers and thinkers must address the role of human rights, which has been largely absent from the critique of the new bipartisan consensus thus far. Addressing human rights strongly is not only the moral thing to do, but it is necessary for a nuanced approach in order to have any hope of having those views adopted as policy. Without this, the advocates of a more calibrated approach to Beijing may end up alienating the significant communities threatened by China’s growing crackdowns—and even implicitly endorsing Beijing’s actions.

Uyghurs and other predominately Muslim groups face crimes against humanity and even the potential for significant loss of life. From 2017 onward, the Chinese government arbitrarily detained an estimated 1 million in so-called reeducation camps in Xinjiang, a northwest region four times the size of California. In the most recent House select committee hearing, a former camp detainee, Gulbahar Haitiwaji, testified to widespread torture and gang-rape within the camps, including with electric batons and tiger chairs: “And the worst thing is they—the guards or police—use electric batons to insert their private parts to rape and torture them.”

This firsthand account of witnessing torture aligns with numerous reports of torture documented by the Xinjiang Victims Database.

Although the massive arbitrary detentions may have ended, hundreds of thousands of these people and others have been subjected to long prison sentences and unfair trials. Since 2017, when many people were rounded up in large numbers, the international community has seen no evidence that the people given long sentences have been released from prison. In 2022, the Xinjiang High People’s Procuratorate, the regional agency responsible for prosecution, stated that 540,826 people had been prosecuted in the region since 2017. It’s likely that almost all have been convicted , as the Chinese courts have a 99.99 percent conviction rate. My organization, Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD), is unaware of any Uyghurs being afforded lawyers of their choice.

Uyghur poets, writers, doctors, and other professionals, who are often in middle age, have been subjected to long prison terms, life in prison, or even death. There is every reason to suspect that prison conditions are just as bad as the camps. The Xinjiang Victims Database has recorded 225 deaths in custody, likely the tip of the iceberg.

To see the dangers of prolonged detention, take the case of Ekpar Asat. Ekpar took part in the U.S. State Department’s International Visitor Leader Program, and upon his return to China in 2016, he was detained and sentenced to 15 years on the charge of “inciting ethnic hatred and ethnic discrimination.” There was no evidence that the trial was public or that Ekpar had a lawyer, in violation of international law. His sister, Yale Law School fellow Rayhan Asat, said on Twitter that her parents recently had a brief two-minute video chat with him, and he looked “unrecognizable and lost huge weight” so that he just “looked like a skull.”

Until Ekpar and all those who have been unjustly imprisoned are released and are found to be healthy and alive, the U.S. government and others who are pushing for more sensible U.S.-China ties must act as if it were probable that a significant number of these people may die in prison or may have been otherwise killed.

That moral calculus must underlie attitudes toward Beijing—not least because sustained foreign attention has made a difference before. The Chinese government once denied it was locking people up in reeducation camps at all, but it was after the U.N. review of China’s record of its implementation of the U.N. Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination in August 2018 that the government finally admitted that many people were indeed being held in “vocational education and training centers.”

As the controversy over the camps continued, the Xinjiang government unexpectedly announced in July 2019 that “over 90 percent of the students” in the camps had returned to society and the camp system had ended. Since the government has not allowed independent human rights experts into the region, it is impossible to verify those claims, but journalists traveling in the region have observed that some former reeducation camps seem to have been abandoned or converted to other uses.

This shows that international pressure can have some effect—even if only partially and incompletely, as the continued detention of hundreds of thousands of Uyghurs in the prison system and the targeting of Uyghur religion and culture shows. But even this is meaningful.

The Chinese Han majority also need attention from foreign powers regarding human rights. In a new report, CHRD found that, even under Xi’s dictatorial rule, human rights defenders were finding ways to build support networks. They were continuing their work for a better tomorrow and were simply “persisting in resisting.”

We found that human rights defenders made use of the few legal tools available to them, despite China’s deeply flawed legal system and lack of independence of the judiciary. They were often at the forefront in assisting marginalized populations and helping to build a more inclusive China. And they overwhelmingly expressed that attention to individual cases by foreign governments, the United Nations, and NGOs played a positive role in putting pressure on the government and improving conditions for human rights defenders.

Barring the possibility of war, it may be accurate that the CCP does not pose an “existential threat” to most Americans, and such a misdiagnosis can lead to the wrong “prescriptions.” But it’s important to recognize that for many Uyghurs, Chinese human rights defenders, and their family members, the CCP does indeed pose an “existential threat.”

Underplaying the severity of the human rights crisis in China—or even ignoring it altogether—will only lead to resentment and a feeling of unseriousness for the victims of abuse and people who follow their stories. Even on a practical level, human rights groups, religious leaders, diaspora communities, and concerned allies will consistently put pressure on the government to do more. Beijing’s worrying record on human rights and the constant stream of untruths about how it treats its own people are also bound to raise concerns about whether it can be a good faith actor on the international stage.

Ignoring the gravity of the human rights challenge posed by the CCP, or treating it as an annoying irritant in the way of constructive relations, makes it less likely that a nuanced approach will be listened to. Foreign-policy thinkers should recognize that a forceful strategy on human rights is absolutely necessary—even if matched with actions elsewhere to ease geopolitical tensions.

Vets Christmas Headcanons

To get in the festive spirit I’ve written some headcanons regarding the vets and Christmas. Pretty sure I’ve done something similar before! The lovely @venialityyy has also requested a piece on the vets perfect Christmas which I’m writing and will post next week. 

Erwin

Erwin enjoys Christmas, it isn’t his favourite time of year, he prefers Spring. But he does rather enjoy all the pomp and ceremony, even if he won’t admit to it out loud.

Insists on a real Christmas tree, preferably one that reached the ceiling and will absolutely have to go and pick it himself along with the other vets.

He also likes to ensure there’s lots of trees and garlands up around Scout headquarters and in the mess hall, stables, bunks.

Loves Christmas themed cocktails and drinking hot chocolate with whiskey in it.

Agrees to take part in Secret Santa for the other vets but then ends up buying everyone a gift anyway.

Loves Yankee Candles all year round but Christmas? He’s a sucker for spruce/pine/woodland scented candles.

Mike

Mike absolutely loves Christmas and will probably start listening to Christmas music before December.

Has a large collection of Christmas Jumpers, PJs, boxers, socks. He loves to get into the spirit, which those who don’t know how well find it strange as he’s usually so quiet and rather stoic. But to those who know and love Mike, they know just how much he loves this time of year.

Loves the red apple wreath yankee candle.

Is a big fan of spiced cider – even better if it’s home made.

Loves traditional wrapping paper and spends quite a lot of time carefully wrapping each present. The problem with Mike’s wrapping is that everyone who gets a gift from him feel guilty unwrapping it! He just does such a good job of it!

Will absolutely kiss under the mistletoe, both his partner and friends. Tries to get Levi under it to kiss him on the cheek.

He loves curling up in front of a fire place with a book and enjoying all the cosy and peaceful elements of Christmas. But he equally enjoys the parties, ice skating, carol singing etc.

Levi

Christmas is just another irritant, something to distract from the real work and training that needs to be done. It’s partly due to the proximity of his birthday to Christmas that makes it difficult for him.

But he does enjoy the food and the drinks.

Spiced Christmas teas are a speciality, he even has a festive tea cosy – he tells others he bought it but actually it was a festive project and he knitted it himself.

He does like to have a Poinsettia and takes very good care of it, making sure it gets enough sunlight and shade, enough water. It takes pride and place on his coffee table which is honestly pretty bare so having the plant on there is a nice touch and makes it seem a little more homely than it otherwise would.

 He isn’t big on presents, but what he does buy you know an awful lot of thought has gone into it. He doesn’t mind hand making a few things which he takes a lot of pride in. Though he absolutely hates people watching him open presents much like he hates watching others open the things he’s either bought or made them.

Hanji

Excitable about Christmas, she doesn’t quite get it but she absolutely loves decorating her place. There’s one big Christmas tree and lots of small ones too which counts for something. They all have a theme as well.

Is the first to have their decorations up – including a wreath on the door (which won’t look so good by the day itself as they put it up too early).

 Loves experimenting with food in the kitchen. Usually it goes well, occasionally not so much but that’s okay, Hanji accepts this is how they will improve and find recipes that everyone loves.

Loves snow and is always up for a snowball fight, building snow people, making snow angels etc. Surprisingly doesn’t feel the cold as much as others.

 Is somewhat of a Christmas pudding fiend, they’ll buy several for themselves and stash them away where others cannot find them. Really enjoys the puddings super hot and with lots of brandy cream.

Nanaba

All about the cosy, peaceful Christmas and New Year.

She spends a lot of time reflecting on the year that’s just gone by as well as Christmases past, thinking about family and tradition.

Speaking of which she is very big on tradition, but only those that still hold value and meaning to her. As well as elements from her past/ancestry and those traditions, she adapts them so they are relevant to her life as well as creating new traditions with her friends.

Loves wrapping Christmas presents, they will put a bow or some other decoration like a bell, small posy of holly and flowers etc.

Modern Nanaba would love Christmas movies, ensuring to watch one a day and highlights the tv guide with all her favourites.

Moblit

Christmas is a bit stressful for Moblit, but he loves it once it’s here. It’s because of this that he has a Christmas organiser and plans everything well in advance, ensuring to do his Christmas shopping early before the crowds gather.

Prefers Christmas on the quieter side with close friends and family.

Enjoys small Christmas parties, essentially with the vets where they can eat, drink, sing etc. but there’s no pressure or people he doesn’t know.

Loves to be the one wearing the chef’s hat on Christmas day. Moblit enjoys cooking the day’s feast as it gives him a little space away from everyone else, in that respect Christmas cooking is quite therapeutic for him.

Secretly loves the magic of Christmas and seeing presents under the tree. He still puts a stocking out which Hanji fills with gifts.
