“Hi Penny!” You chirped hugging your friendly lightly. The relationship between you and her  moving from boss and employee to friendship quickly over the last few months. You adored the self-assured woman who put arrogant pilots in their place daily. She quickly took you in under her wing showing you the ins and outs of being a bartender at the Hard Deck. The rest was history and you two became thick as thieves even with the age difference between you. It never bothered you. It didn’t bother her. She was your best friend and confidant.
You’d only been working there for about a month before you got sick again. Sick enough that you had to call in for a few days. You hated that you had to do this to Penny, but she understood once you explained your situation. She understood telling you to take the next few days off and rest up. It didn’t surprise you that you got nothing but support from her. You never told anyone the nitty gritty details though. Just a run of the mill glossy explanation.
You absolutely despised your new body after the incident. A body that had unfortunately been brutally attacked. A body that was constantly feeling the repercussions of a literal knife to the back. A body that could only take so much stress before it went down. Once you felt the fever set in you knew you needed to get to a doctor. Every fever after the abduction was a result of the injuries you sustained that horrific night.
In your past life you were a detective at the Milwaukee Police Department. Swiftly rising through the ranks being known as an overly thorough and excruciatingly precise officer. You rarely made mistakes, often wrapping up cases quicker than your counterparts. You were good. Great even. Until you made that one, almost fatal, miscalculation. Playing right into the trap of the serial killer your department had been hunting for the last year.
You should’ve known better. You were smarter than that. But the bliss of maybe finally being able to catch him, even if it was a sliver of a chance, made you slip up. Entering the abandoned house, you were quietly ambushed and put to sleep with a cloth being placed over your nose and mouth. You knew you were fucked when your arms instantly went limp making you drop the gun that was firmly in your grasp. Not long after you took another ragged breath in your knees gave out before your eyes shut completely.
Waking up in a daze you felt your hands tied above you letting your feet barely rest on the ground. Fuck. It dawned on you that he got you. Blinking rapidly, you tried to take in your surroundings, surveying a way out of this mess you managed to put yourself in.
The only light came in through a window on the far side of the basement you presumed you were in. It was cold, dark, and musty. You had to be in the abandoned houses basement. You prayed your team was on their way like they said they were. How far behind you could they really be? You’d had the chance to be knocked out and wake up and they still weren’t here? Spiraling in your own thoughts you heard a snicker from the corner of the room snapping you right back into the reality of the situation.
You shuddered seeing a man in the corner watching you slowly wake up while registering the trouble you were really in. Taking a few steps forward towards you, you saw a sick smirk coming from the man. Breathing deeply you knew you needed to find your courage. You couldn’t let this man get the better of you again.
“Miss Y/L/N. I must admit, I wasn’t expecting you. You’ve always seemed so much more… calculated.” He grinned slowly walking around you.
A frown adorned your face. Don’t let him get the better of you, “My team’s just slow.” You answered him knowing you needed to keep the conversation going. The longer he talked the longer you had a chance to get out of this mess.
A low chuckle emitted from the dirty man that was eyeing you like candy. You were able to get a closer look at him now too. You don’t know what you were expecting but it wasn’t that. He didn’t look the part. He was skinny, scrawny even. He was too dirty to be this precise. Too small to seem so big. It didn’t add up to you.
“That I know Miss Y/L/N. That I know. I’ve gotten away with what, eleven times now? Eleven. Fucking. Times. That’s pathetic.” He sighed taking a long pause making sure to eye you up and down, “Guess you’ll just be number twelve.”
Adrenaline raced through your veins as your heart rate spiked. Maybe it really was your time. Your team should’ve been here by now. He must have moved you. He had to of moved you. God, you prayed they would figure it out quick enough. Why didn’t Spencer Reid really exist? He’d be great right about now.
You shook your head trying to appear more confident than you really were. You just had to keep buying yourself some time. You just had to make him angry. A narcissist always had to be right. You had to make him feel wrong.
“Doubt it.” You chirped sounding surprisingly confident despite the feelings buzzing through your head.
He hummed stopping his walk around you, “You’ve got a mouth on you huh? A pretty one at that.”
Rolling your eyes, you knew it was working, “I thought you did your research? Don’t you know everything about me?”
Your eyes only grew wide when you saw his hand come for your face. Not having enough time to react you felt his hand contact the side of your face. Did he really just slap you? Fuck. You had to admit that one hurt. Head still twisted you spit the blood right out of your mouth.
“Ouch.” That stupid motherfucker made you bite your tongue.
This time he rolled his eyes giving you the same treatment you were just giving him. It made you smile knowing you had him worked up, “That’ll be the least of your concerns Y/N.”
“Why? Why’d you do it?” You had to ask. You needed to know before he killed you. You’d spent too much time chasing this guy not to know.
He shrugged reaching for something in his back pocket, “Why not Y/N?”
“Really?” That pissed you off. For no other reason? There had to be a reason, “Eleven people for nothing? Ruining their families lives for nothing?”
He nodded taking another step closer pulling a shiny silver knife out of that back pocket, “Really Miss Y/L/N. And your family is next my dear. Such a shame really.”
You swore you heard car tires rolling up on the house. Maybe just maybe it was your team. Just keep him talking for a little bit longer, “I don’t think so.”
He drew the knife to you neck, clearly more than a little pissed off. Pressing the blade down you felt a little trickle of blood down your chest. Damn. Maybe this really would be it. You had to think of something. Anything to buy you just a few more seconds.
“Now what makes you say that Y/N?”
You wish you could shrug but your hands were a little tied up, “The agents walking around upstairs.” You let out a rather loud scream hoping to draw the attention of your fellow officers down to the basement.
A sharp pain ripped from your back right side before he attempted to hightail it out the basement window. It didn’t quite register with you that you’d been stabbed until you heard the panic from the other officers in the room. You heard faint mumblings of, “Officer down. Stab wound to the side.” Before the darkness took over.
When you woke the doctors told you everything. You lost a kidney which put you at elevated risk for infections. The infections would lead to fevers. Fevers would lead to endless doctor’s visits for steroid shots and antibiotics. You didn’t believe them at first until the first fever took you down. You’d gotten taken out like a light ending up having to stay in the hospital for a few days. Learning quickly that you needed to take this seriously. After a few months you realized it wasn’t changing. This was your life now. You were newly riddled with health problems thanks to the asshole that stabbed you. He never did get to twelve. It made you happy knowing that you living was his last mistake. He was spending the rest of his life behind bars without a chance of getting out.
You were given permanent medical leave after month five. You were so fucking sad that you had to leave but it was best. You weren’t you. You were no longer great. You were broken. A sad pathetic broken version of yourself. Or so you thought.
After a while of bouncing around you ended up in San Diego staying with a friend for a while. She was lonely and you needed a place to go so she invited you to stay a while. A while turned into forever as you slowly fell in love with the place. The beach seemed to help heal you mentally which led to less bouts of sickness. The happier you grew the stronger you were.
That’s when you found Penny and decided this was your new home. You slowly began to fall back into the swing of a somewhat normal life. Only to be reminded of your inability to stay healthy after everything. Thankful you had Penny. You surely couldn’t have done it without her.
Things only got better when a new batch of aviators made their way to San Diego. It started with Jake’s incessant flirting. Bradley then caught on and began doing the same. After constant rejection to both of them they both finally caved and actually became really good friends with you. They had your back like no other. One of their eyes always seemed to be on you when you were working. Just making sure none of the clowns in the bar tried anything you didn’t like. Jake and Bradley had to tell a few drunk guys off a couple of times but nothing major ever happened.
Falling for Jake seemed to happen very slowly then all at once. At first it was the little things. He always seemed to make you laugh at work. He opened doors for you. You always seemed to have a small glimmer of hope that he would be going to the bar the same time you’d be working. You rejected him so heartily at first because you’d heard the stories from Penny. The horror stories of her and Mav. She was a hypocrite though, falling back in love with him the second he came back around. You had to hand it to him though, Mav seemed deeply in love. Like he wouldn’t let her go this time.
You realized you had fallen for him when you got a little too jealous seeing him flirt with all the pretty girls that came around. Nearly losing it when you saw him take one of them home one night. You hated to admit it, but she was far prettier than you are too. You were sure she wasn’t dealing with your shit ass body either.
Bradley caught on quick. He noticed your small glances towards Jake. How your body always seemed to turn towards him. How you laughed at his corny ass jokes. Bradley wasn’t jealous he was just a bit confused. How in the hell could Jake manage to get your attention? In Bradley’s head you were so far out of his league it blew his mind. But in yours you’d never even take a step up to the plate.
“Y/N,” Penny snapped getting your attention. Mindlessly cleaning dirty glasses, you realized you must’ve zoned out.
“Yeah?” Setting the clean glass down you turned towards your friend.
“Joe called off. It’s just me and you tonight.”
You groaned throwing your head back in annoyance, “Does he ever show up for Friday night shifts? We’re going to get killed tonight.”
She smiled softly at your annoyance, “More tips for us?” She tried to reason with you.
“Yeah, yeah. More tips. Blah blah.” You turned back to your work trying to get it done a little quicker hoping to help your very busy self later.
“That’s the spirit Y/N.” She laughed returning to stocking the bar up for the night.
“Love ya Penny.”
“I know you do!” She laughed turning her attention back to her tasks at hand. She too didn’t want to be too distracted before the night swept her away.
Tumblr media
It was slower than usual for a Friday night. Suspiciously slow. You didn’t feel like you were drowning the entire night. Not that you were complaining. Not at all. You loved when it happened. You were able to chat with your regulars enjoying the casual banter with everyone. If there was one thing you loved about this new life was the interactions, you had with people at work. People liked talking with you at work now. Before it was interrogations and arguments. Now it was learning about the family or fending off heavy flirting from a pilot. You loved the change not realizing how much you actually enjoyed casual chatter with people.
Penny was secretly thankful it was dead as well. Even though it meant a few less hundred dollars for the night at least she could enjoy the night. She too hated when it got overwhelming. She got the chance to chat with Pete in between customers. She and Pete were as happy as ever. Especially once he got back from the mission. The two seemed to be attached at the hip.
You got excited when you saw the Naval squad you’ve gotten close with over the last few months come through the door. They’d completed the mission that they were all initially here for. Half of them had deployed off to other bases. The other half opted to stay as teachers, given the opportunity after they came back. You were more than overjoyed when both Jake and Bradley decided to stay for a while.
The two of them didn’t like each other but they didn’t hate each other either. They acted more as causal acquaintances.  Accepting that they were going to be around the other and it was best to lay off each other.
Your grumpy attitude nearly vanished when you spotted your favorite blonde boy walking over towards you. A big toothy grin crossing his face made you join him in a big smile. Penny caught your grin out of the corner of her eye taking note of the two of you. She had her suspicions of the two of you. Jake straight up admitting he had a crush on you to her and you refusing to admit anything, she was in for a treat.
Jake walked up sitting down on the stool in front of you. He winked at you before he opened his mouth, “So, I was thinking…”
You gasped stopping him dead in his tracks. He looked at you in confusion from your outburst, “Didn’t know you could do that Jake.” Throwing that wink right back at him you watched his confused face turn down into a frown. You loved this. Looked forward to it even. The back and forth that always turned into flirting with him. Over the last month your nerves morphed to some weird confidence when you talked with him You couldn’t get enough of it. Of him.
“Ha. Ha. Very funny sweetheart.” Jake rolled his eyes dropping that sweet nickname so casually. Looking away quickly you went to serve somebody else so he couldn’t see your blush. God, you hated that you wore your heart on your sleeve. Emotions literally written across your face.
Jake popped back up once you were done with the customer, “Can’t run away from me Y/N.” His smile grew into a smirk knowing he had you there. It wasn’t like you were going to leave Penny to fend for herself on a Friday night. Even if it was dead.
“You’re right,” You grinned, “But I can make you walk back and forth all night. And all I have to do is turn around.”
Shaking his head he leaned on the bar, “You sure do make me work.”
“Would you have it any other way Mr. Seresin?”
“Never sweetheart.” He gave you a soft smile. One that was really only reserved for you, not that you knew that. It wasn’t often that Jake felt comfortable around someone to let his guard down. But with you? He felt so different around you. Like you’d never judge him. He could tell you the most insane thing and you’d still find the silver lining in it. Jake adored that about you. Loved it even, “Can I continue?” He asked you faking irritation even though he was smiling.
“Sure. Still don’t know if it’s a good thing that you can think or not though.”
“You wound me.” He feigned hurt dramatically placing a hand on his chest, “Anyway, we’re heading to the beach tomorrow. You should join us.” He pointed to the aviators by the pool table.
Pouring him a beer you looked up to him, “The beach?” You thought for a moment. You wouldn’t have hesitated before. But you hadn’t put a bikini on since the accident. You weren’t even sure if you had a swimsuit anymore. You never looked at the scar. You sure as hell weren’t letting anyone see the damn thing.
“Yeah, that big sandy thing out there.”
“Smart ass.”
“The only and only darling.” Sitting down in a new barstool you opted to just talk to him instead of turning around.
“I’ll think about it.” You tapped on the wooden countertop afraid to look him in the eyes.
“What’s there to think about?” He raised an eyebrow taking a drink from his glass. After setting it down he nodded towards you, “Thank you, by the way.”
“Sure thing, Jake.” Taking a second you thought of a weak excuse, “I might be working. Not sure yet.”
“Penny!” Jake yelled motioning for her to come over.
“Jake, I have paying customers I’m trying to serve.” She eyeballed you knowing you probably weren’t going to charge the man. Not that she cared that much, but she had to make a point as a best friend. Penny had hounded you about Jake. Just like Bradley had. Just like half the dagger squad had. But you still wouldn’t cave. You couldn’t cave. You loved this thing you had with Jake far too much to fuck it up. Especially if he didn’t feel the same way about you. So, you opted for friend. Flirty friend but friend, nonetheless. If he made a move, you’d dive in headfirst but until then you’d sit back. A solid plan in your own head.
“Carry on. Just one question, can I have Y/N tomorrow afternoon for some beach time?”
“Sure. She’s not even on the schedule.” Penny nodding giving you an overly sweet smile. Great.
You shot daggers at your friend. She was acting as anything but at the moment, “Okay, I’ll go.” You said as you turned back towards Jake.
“Great! I’ll pick you up around eleven?”
This time you raised your eyebrows. A habit you had picked up on from Jake, “You will?” His question took you by surprise. You were more than capable of driving yourself to the beach.
“I will. It’s only right since I invited you sweetheart.”
Penny nodded walking back to her tasks. Her suspicions about the two of you confirmed after watching the one innocent interaction between the two of you. It was so painfully obvious the both of you were into the other but were simply clueless. Penny was planning on teasing you later on that.
She knew underneath all the shit Jake was a good man. He had all the good characteristics of one. He was fiercely loyal. Defending his and his pilots honor time after time. Not only did he talk the talk he walked the walk. Jake wasn’t afraid to get a little down and dirty. Penny knew he would protect the hell out of you. He would love the shit out of you. He would comfort you when you were sick and be by your side when you needed him to. She was rooting for the two of you. She just needed to figure out a plan. She’d talk to Bradley about it. She knew he was trying as well.
“Alright.” You nodded, “You remember where I live?”
“’Course I do darling.” He bobbed his head up and down.
“Okay then. Eleven tomorrow.”
Throwing you one last wink he nodded towards you, “See you then sweetheart.”
Giving him a hesitant laugh, you gave him a short nod back, “See you then Jake.”
Tumblr media
You thought you would’ve jinxed it by now, but it was still slow. Twelve o’clock on a Friday and you weren’t busting your ass? You felt like you were thriving. You noticed Bradley enter not too long after Jake giving you a quick wave. He decided to wait on bugging you until you were free. He’d wait until the end of your shift if he needed to. This was Bradley’s new favorite thing. Closing the bar with his best friend. You loved it too, but you’d never admit it to him. Giving him a hard time was much more fun.
Penny gave you a short break seeing as there weren’t many people there. You waved Bradley down pointing to the deck outside letting him know you’d be heading out that way. He gave you a quick thumbs up letting you know he’d meet you out there.
“Hey stranger.” You nudged his side. He was leaning on the rail overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
“I know you like him.” Sucking in a breath you shook your head. This was so Bradley. He never beat around the bush.
Tilting your head you gave him the most confused expression, “What are you talking about Bradley?”
He chuckled taking a long pull from his beer, “Jake. You like Jake. For whatever fucking reason you decided to go and like him.”
Eyebrows raised you studied your friend. Growing best friend. The man who really gave it to you straight. Like no other friend would. He wasn’t even asking for a confession from you. He was telling you, you liked Jake. Like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
To Bradley it was, “Jesus Christ Y/N. You like him, right? Come on now. Spit it out.” Bradley continued on. Just egging you on.
You shook your head, “So what if I do. It’ll ruin everything.” You admitted to him with only slight hesitation.
Bradley rolled his eyes, “Don’t be stupid now.”
Mouth dropping slightly, you rolled your eyes in return, a tad bit dramatically to boot, “That’s rude Bradley.”
Taking another long drink to make you think long and hard he finally continued, “Are you blind? He likes you just as much as you like him. Fuck. Both of you are the dumbest fucking people I swear.”
“Jesus Bradley. Rough day?” You giggled feeling someone comforted by his words somehow. He was comfortable around you.
He shook his head, “Good day actually. You two are just dumb. I’m annoyed s’all. You’re not really dumb. You’re just a romantic dumbass.”
“He doesn’t…”
Bradley leaned over to bar placing a finger over your mouth stopping you immediately, “I’m advising you to shut the hell up right now. Listen to me. He likes you. He might even more than like you. He never shuts up about you Y/N. Any of the guys can tell you. In the locker room he always somehow brings you up. It’s remarkable actually. I’ve got a bet with Fanboy about it.”
Shaking your head, you refused to hear him, “Bradley I’m not…” You paused thinking of the right words, “I’m not desirable. I’m half the person I once was. I’m weak and always sick. That’s not a life I’d want to put on someone. Especially not somebody like him. You guys are so fast paced, and I can’t be. One minute I’m fine and the next I’m in the hospital. I…”
Bradley sighed giving you a once over, “You just don’t get it. And that’s okay. Really it is. I can’t imagine what you’re going through. From what limited amount of information, you tell me.” He raised his eyebrows at you making sure to let you know he wasn’t pleased you were holding back on him, “You lived a life like ours. Go, go, go. I get it. I would be losing my mind if I had to drop this tomorrow and change my life completely. I’d be a mess. But stop and think Y/N. What did you look for in a partner back then?”
You paused before you spoke catching your sentence before it came out. Closing your mouth, you thought for a second. What did you look for in a guy back then? Back when you were unstoppable. Someone kind and understanding. Someone incredibly patient. Someone who was different than you.
You could admit that. Or you could keep deflecting like you always did, “I didn’t date much before really.”
Bradley smirked like he got you, “My point exactly.”
“What are talking about?”
“You didn’t have time to date. We, all of us,” he pointed to the pilots huddled around the dart boards inside, “didn’t really date much either before the mission. Now, we finally have the time. He doesn’t want to date someone that’s nonstop. He wants somebody that’ll be home. That’ll always be there. You’re not undesirable Y/N. Don’t ever say that again.”
You sighed knowing he was right. But there was that one thing that stopped you, “Bradley I’m sick.”
He shrugged, “Every now and then.”
“It’ll never stop.” You countered.
He continued shrugging, “Look I don’t know Jake that well, but he doesn’t seem to care Y/N. If it were me, I wouldn’t care. Nobody’s perfect. Life is about compromises and sacrifices. High highs and low lows.” Taking a final sip from his beer he set the glass down on the railing, holding it in between his hands.
You didn’t know what to say. He was right. Of course, he was right. Bradley always seemed to be right. And blunt. So, fucking blunt. Something you adored, and hated, about the man.
Bradley decided to break the silence, “Look, go after him. Don’t go after him. It’s up to you. But he likes you. A lot. He’s just like you though. Too damn scared to make a move.”
You sighed nodding your head, “I hear you, Bradley.”
“Good. Now get back in there. Penny look’s a little stressed.”
“Alright, I’ll see you later.” You stood pulling him out of the chair with you.
“You sure will.”

How the hell was this guy walking around free to terrorize a community? He should have been still locked up for his previous crimes.
By Anna Slatz April 14, 2024
A serial sex offender has been convicted of assaulting a disabled teen girl in Wisconsin. Adam Hetke, who identifies as a female vampire named Sabrina, has a lengthy criminal history involving multiple sex offenses against women and outstanding charges related to a homicide.
Hetke, 35, was charged in July of 2021 with first-degree sexual assault by threatening the use of a dangerous weapon and second-degree sexual assault of a mentally ill victim. The assault occurred in Waukesha, and involved a 16-year-old cognitively disabled girl Hetke had met at a local gas station.
According to the complaint, Hetke terrified the girl, telling her he was a “vampire” who would harm her if she did not comply with his demands. He then followed her to her nearby home and sexually assaulted her. During the assault, Hetke kept a knife nearby and threatened to use it to harm her before the girl jumped out of a bedroom window and fled for help.
When he was arrested, he was wearing a one-piece swimsuit under his clothes and was holding a knife.
During trial, Hetke underwent a number of assessments to determine his ability to stand trial, but was found to be competent and deemed ineligible for the insanity plea. On April 11, Hetke was convicted on both counts he was charged with, and is set to be sentenced on June 7.
Tumblr media

But this is not Hetke’s first run-in with law enforcement.
Hetke is a registered sex offender in the state of Wisconsin, dating back to a 2007 conviction for second degree sexual assault. At the time, Hetke had been staying at a residential facility, and he physically overpowered a female staff member before groping her repeatedly. The victim was able to escape his grip and get away.
For the assault, Hetke was sentenced to 8 years in prison with 4 years on extended supervision, and was ordered to the sex offender registry for life.
Just before his release on January 26, 2016, the Waukesha Police Department warned the community that Hetke was at “high risk” to reoffend. In the announcement, they noted Hetke had no fixed residence, but that he would be monitored by a GPS tracker.
In 2019, Hetke was convicted once more of sexual assault involving a female victim, and was released from prison in 2020. The police bulletin again noted that Hetke was homeless and would be subjected to GPS monitoring, but also indicated that Hetke had begun identifying as a “woman.”
Tumblr media
Following his second release from prison, Hetke was allegedly involved in a homicide in Milwaukee, for which he has yet to stand trial.
According to the complaint in that case, Hetke reportedly strangled a man to death using a power cord in April of 2021, though he apparently blamed the murder on a “demon.” He told Milwaukee police that the victim was “possessed by a demon” and began stabbing himself in the chest with tongs.
Hetke said he was only trying to exorcise the demon from the victim, but that the demon caused the victim to wrap a cord around his own neck and pull the ends. But a witness in that case has testified that Hetke admitted to murdering the man because he “disrespected” him, and that Hetke told the witness he was an incarnation of Satan.
Hetke is set to appear in court for that case on April 30.
According to the Wisconsin Sex Offender Registry, Hetke goes by a number of aliases including: Sabrina, Morrigan, Black Dragon, White Chocolate, Katie, and Andre.

Joniah Walker has been missing since June 23rd, 2022. The then-15-year-old was last seen near her home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Joniah's father was supposed to pick her up from her residence around 4:00 PM that afternoon, but when he arrived, Joniah was nowhere to be found. Her family has not seen or heard from her again.
After Joniah was reported missing, it was revealed that a neighbor's Ring camera captured her leaving her home around 2:30 PM on the day of her disappearance. Phone records revealed that Joniah called her therapist at 3:27 PM. Later that evening, she sent a text to her therapist that said she ran away from home. This is the last known communication from Joniah; it appears that nobody has heard from her since this message.
There isn't any information available about why Joniah would want to run away. According to her mother, Joniah has struggled with both depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. It's unclear if this plays a role in her disappearance, but it certainly has escalated concerns for her safety. Joniah's mother also said that Joniah has never run away before in the past.
The Milwaukee Police Department is appealing to the public for anyone with information that could lead to Joniah's whereabouts. She is described as a black female who stands at about 5'3" and weighs approximately 130 pounds. If you have seen Joniah, or have any information about her whereabouts, please contact the Milwaukee PD at 414-933-4444 or the National Center for Missing Children’s hotline at 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678).

BREAKING NEWS: Gym Challenger Arrested in Petalburg City
By: Yumi Hirai
Published: December 1st 2023
PETALBURG CITY: An investigation is under way after a gym challenger was caught on camera at Petalburg City Gym attempting to knock out Gym Leader Norman after their battle. The Petalburg City Police Department is looking into trainer Skipp Normansson's past, claiming his previous ties to Kanto's Team Rocket may provide insight into his harsh training methods and violent outburst.
Subscribe to Channel 3 News Network—Petalburg for more local, late-breaking news!
[The video opens up on two news anchors in a newsroom. They both have their hands folded on the table in front of them, and are looking into the camera with the level sternness typical of the profession. No emotions are betrayed, only a stark sense of professionalism.
Anchor 1: Good afternoon, I'm Calvin Murrow.
Anchor 2: And I'm Astrid Stax. Today, gym spectators and league staff were both shocked to see a different type of battle break out in the arena—a battle that led to the arrest of the challenger.
Calvin: That's right, Astrid; police apprehended 21-year-old Skipp Normannson after the young man attacked Leader Norman in broad daylight. We're live on the scene with Reporter Twig Milwaukee where investigators are saying they expected nothing less from the trainer.
There's a brief pause as the camera switches to a lone reporter in front of the Petalburg Gym. There's a crowd behind them, as well as several police cars and a blockade preventing people from entering the gym. The distinct bark of Manectric can be heard as some people try to get a closer look. After a moment of silence to ensure that they're live, the reporter begins speaking.
Twig: Good afternoon, Cal. It's just like you said, the police have been keeping their eye on this particular league challenger for a while now. According to them, this isn't Skipp's first run-in with the law—and they don't expect it to be his last. The trainer is currently under arrest for assault and battery, but his list of charges is expected to increase as the investigation continues. While authorities may have expected this outcome, gym attendants were shocked.
The camera switches to a young woman with a Whismur in her arms. The Whismur looks as nervous as any member of the species, but it doesn't seem to be in any true distress, the earmuffs on its head insulating it from the noise of the surrounding crowds. It's trainer fidgets with a thin, nervous smile, shifting her weight back and forth as she struggles to maintain eye contact.
Woman: (...) It's definitely not what I expected to see.
The camera then cuts to the empty arena of the Petalburg Gym, slowly panning around and showing different angles of the ongoing police investigation as Twig provides a voiceover.
Twig: That sentiment was echoed by many spectators after witnessing the brutal attack on Leader Norman at the end of Trainer Skipp Normannson's gym challenge this afternoon. Delilah Rodriguez has been watching the gym challenges here in Petalburg since she was a child and, according to her, she has never witnessed an event like this. And she's not alone in her shock.
The camera cuts back to the woman as the interview continues.
Woman: Norman is a pretty level-headed guy. Sure, I've seen gym challengers get upset at a loss, or even just get really fired up in battle, but I don't know what would possess anyone to fistfight Norman of all people.
The video then cuts to a clip of Skipp and Norman standing in front of each other on the arena, credited to the Petalburg City Gym. Norman seems to be giving Skipp a lecture, though it's unclear what he's saying . He keeps gesturing to one of Skipp's pokeballs as the younger man gets visibly more and more agitated, gritting his sharp teeth and narrowing his eye into a tense glare. Then, Skipp explodes, throwing a left hook directly at Norman's head and drawing startled cries from the crowd. The two exchange blows for a few seconds before gym staff intervene and separate them.
After a while, it switches to displaying a slideshow of images taken throughout the battle—most of which involve Sora the Cubone in various battle scenarios seeming wildly outmatched. As it plays, Twig provides commentary.
Twig: The altercation was reportedly started over a disagreement between Skipp and Leader Norman on his methods of training his Cubone. According to the leader, he had been seen throughout the gym challenge forcing the pokemon to battle despite signs of extreme distress, refusing to switch her out until the leader knocked her out. The footage from Skipp's gym challenge is currently under investigation by local and League authorities.
Norman: Unfortunately, I did see this coming.
The video feed switches to Gym Leader Norman, who seems as stern as ever as he gives a short interview. His face is visibly bruised on the right side and there's dried blood on the corner of his mouth, but he doesn't seem to even feel it.
Norman: Skipp showed himself to be an aggressive, unstable individual from the moment we first crossed paths a few months ago. I was hoping this journey would even him out, but... It seems he hasn't earned that second chance.
The camera then cuts over to an Officer Jenny. Her arms are folded and her eyes are narrowed into a glare as she speaks.
Jenny: We shouldn't have let him get this far. We knew he would be a repeat offender, and it's a failing on our end that we didn't keep an eye on him and stop him before it came to this.
The camera cuts to an overhead shot of a Manectric lying by the Jenny's feet. It has a bandage around its torso, whining as it recovers. After a minute, it switches to some stock footage of Team Rocket grunts in Kanto.
Twig: According to official reports, Skipp has had a storied history with the law. A Kanto native, he has an existing criminal record under the name Shigeki Kugihara. Just earlier this year, he finished serving a four year sentence for his crimes committed while in Team Rocket. These crimes ran the gamut from petty theft to gang assault. The records state that he has had a long history of delinquency starting as early as thirteen years old.
The footage then cuts back to the Jenny, who somehow seems even angrier than before.
Jenny: His previous history with Rocket is a likely contributor to his mistreatment of pokemon—his own and others. That poor Cubone has multiple compound injuries built up over what would have had to been at least a week of training outside of its limits, not to mention he kicked Sparky here in the ribs while we were apprehending him. Fortunately, his journey ends here. For everyone's safety.
The footage then cuts back to the newsroom, where the anchors are still sitting there with those neutral, level expressions. A few moments of silence pass as they endure they're on air before speaking.
Astrid: Skipp is currently facing several charges including assault and battery on a League official, as well as several counts of pokemon cruelty. Though his case is still being built, he is currently at risk of facing a minimum of 20 years in prison, as well as possible deportation back to Kanto. We will keep you updated as this story progresses right here on Channel 3 News Network—Petalburg.]

A Wisconsin man who is considered the “backbone” of his family was gunned down earlier this month while doing his job.
Antoine Gee Jr., a Domino’s employee, was targeted while delivering pizza in Milwaukee on Jan. 10, WLBT reported. Three teens are accused of concocting a plan to snatch the food from him to get a free meal.
Security footage shows two of the suspects starting a fight with Gee when he got to the address. During the physical dispute, he was fatally shot multiple times. The perpetrators then left the scene.
When first responders arrived, they discovered the 33-year-old unresponsive and bleeding out from the gunshot wounds, per Law & Crime, citing an affidavit. His family told local news that he had the “biggest smile.”
The Milwaukee Police Department said Armier McArthur, Domain Patrick, and T.L McNealy were charged with one count of felony murder and that each of them faces 55 years in prison.
“All they had to do was just ask. He probably would have given him the pizza and paid for it himself,” the victim’s sister, Kashmir Toliver, told the WLBT.
During their investigation, police went to Domino’s and received the address associated with the order, according to Law & Crime. They found that it was connected to a man on supervised release and that the location was near where the fatal shooting occurred.
Officials obtained a warrant and arrested the cousin of the parolee, listed as AW in police records. He informed investigators that three people came to the home the night of the incident, including Keyshaun and Mir, according to the report. The third person was not identified.
That’s when the trio, all 17 years old, ordered the pizza and carried out the plan. AW did not go with them to pick the food up but told police that shortly after the shooting, they charged back into the house, “running around like wild animals,” the outlet reported. One of them had Gee’s delivery bag.
“While this was happening, [AW] aunt called his mom, and his aunt told his mom that the three had robbed the delivery driver and not to let them back in the house,” the affidavit alleged, noting that the three were forced to leave the home they’d fled to.
Gee’s mother has created a GoFundMe, which has now exceeded its $10,000 goal. The family has raised nearly $12,000 as of Monday evening.
“To the media, he’s just a pizza delivery man, but to his family, he was the backbone. He was a truck driver, a landlord, a brother, a nephew, an investor,” the caption said. “While this has been a very stressful time, making funeral arrangements for my only son has been a lot. Please feel free to donate or share my link to help me lay my son to rest peacefully.”

During the summer of 2020, many school districts shifted away from using school resource officers (SROs) in response to widespread concerns over policing and racial justice that had swept across the country. Within a month of the death of George Floyd, Minneapolis Public Schools terminated their longstanding contract with the Minneapolis Police Department. A handful of other large districts—including Denver, Seattle, Milwaukee, and San Francisco—shortly followed suit in removing police officers from their schools.
Three years later, the tide is turning in the opposite direction. Many districts that planned to restructure their SRO programs have struggled to implement meaningful changes. Other districts have reversed course entirely, such as Denver Public Schools, which announced a plan to reinstate SROs across school campuses this fall. Texas has gone so far as to mandate that every school campus must have an armed police officer. It’s not hard to see the rationale behind such actions. School shootings continue to happen, and educators have reported grappling with disruptive student behavioral issues that were exacerbated by the pandemic.
This back-and-forth over SRO policies raises a basic—but challenging—empirical question: How do SROs affect school environments and student outcomes? We sought to answer these questions in a recent national study, co-authored with John Engberg and Shawn Bushway. In this post, we describe our findings from that study and consider how local and state governments might strike the right balance with their SRO programs.
A natural experiment in school-based policing
Our study uses data from the 2017-18 wave of the Civil Rights Data Collection, which includes measures of disciplinary incidents, disaggregated by student subgroups, for every public school in the United States. Notably, this is the first national dataset to track the number of full-time-equivalent school law enforcement officers present at each school. The data show that around 41% of high schools, 38% of middle schools, and 17% of elementary schools have an SRO stationed on school grounds at least part time (Figure 1 below).
Tumblr media
We are interested in understanding the impacts of these SROs. Simply comparing outcomes at schools with and without SROs can lead to misleading results, since SROs are commonly hired at larger schools with preexisting safety risks or student discipline problems. Therefore, we use a quasi-experimental method called regression discontinuity to estimate causal effects of SROs. This method compares schools scoring just above a score threshold for a federal school-based policing grant program to schools scoring just below that same threshold. These schools should be nearly identical to each other—except that some schools received funding for a new SRO and others didn’t.
Impacts of SROs on school safety
Using this comparison approach, as shown in Figure 2, we find that introducing a new SRO to a school increases the reported number of gun-related offenses by 0.3 incidents per 500 students (a 195% increase from average). Gun-related incidents are rare in schools and include instances of gun possession, threats with a gun, and physical attacks with a gun. This increase in gun-related incidents is consistent with prior research showing that SROs tend to increase reported crime in schools. However, it is unclear whether such changes are explained by (a) actual changes in student behavior, (b) changes to detection and reporting practices induced by the presence of an SRO, or (c) some combination of the two.
Conversely, we find that a new SRO decreases other forms of violent offenses by 2.9 incidents per 500 students (a 30% decrease from average). These other violent offenses include physical attacks without a weapon, threats without a weapon, and other, rarer forms of violence such as sexual assault. This finding lends support to the argument that SROs can help to support safer school environments for students and staff (though it, too, is subject to changes in detection or reporting practices).
Tumblr media
Impacts of SROs on student discipline
These reductions in school violence come at a serious cost, our study finds. One additional student is arrested at school or referred to law enforcement per 500 students per year (a 52% increase) following the introduction of a new SRO. This effect corroborates a key mechanism hypothesized as part of the school-to-prison pipeline—that SROs increase the likelihood that minor offenses committed in school lead to formal criminal justice contact.
SROs also change the disciplinary structure within schools. An additional SRO increases the number of students receiving out-of-school suspension by 12 students (a 62% increase) and the number of students receiving expulsion by around one student (a 90% increase) per 500 students. The magnitudes of these impacts are startling given that SROs do not have the formal authority to suspend or expel students—these decisions lie under the purview of school administrators. However, other research has found similar effects, and SROs clearly become involved in minor student disciplinary matters in nuanced but important ways.
These effects of SROs on discipline and arrest rates vary significantly across different populations of students. Adverse effects are more pronounced for male students than for female students. They are also more pronounced for students with disabilities. Effects of an SRO on suspension, expulsion, and arrest are all nearly three times larger for students with disabilities than for students without disabilities. SRO presence also disproportionately harms Black students. Out-of-school suspensions increase by 1.9 times more, expulsions by 3.3 times more, and arrests by 2.5 times more for Black students than for white students upon introduction of an SRO to the school. These disparate increases take place amid an environment where Black students already receive disproportionate punishment for the same school-based offenses.
These patterns generally emphasize the centrality of race to questions involving school policing. As the continuing controversy over policing reforms makes clear, student race is a critical dimension for evaluating police in schools. Data show that Black students are less likely to feel safe in the presence of SROs, and SROs are more likely to view students as threats in racially diverse urban schools than in affluent, white suburban schools. School districts and states should take these issues of racial bias in policing into account as they consider whether to further invest in SROs and/or whether to implement policies governing the use of SROs.
Practical considerations for school districts and states
High-profile school shootings are a common motivation for increasing the use of police officers in schools. However, these events are relatively rare, and police officers do much more in schools than prepare for active shooters.
Our study and related research suggest several policy recommendations:
First, memoranda of understanding (MOUs) between school districts and police departments should clearly delineate the roles of SROs and ensure that they are not pulled into school disciplinary responses to minor infractions. These MOUs should be clearly communicated not only to SROs but also to school administrators such that they know when and how to appropriately involve an SRO in student issues.
Second, SROs should receive basic, specialized training that better prepares them to build relationships with students and de-escalate situations that can arise with children and adolescents. Even though SROs funded through the Community Oriented Policing Services Hiring Program are required to complete basic training, there is currently no national training guidance for SROs, and training requirements vary widely across states.
Third, education agencies should collect and make available data on the placement and activities of SROs. This is not done currently in part because SROs are typically not school district employees; they are police agency employees. Better data would allow more rigorous review and evaluation of SROs at different levels of schooling and under different training or accountability structures.
Fourth, school districts should carefully weigh the pros and cons of SROs—relative to alternative approaches—given the needs of their students and communities. In some districts, alternative safety personnel such as security guards or mobile law enforcement units could better meet school needs. Investing in alternative student support services, such as social work and mental health professionals, could also improve school climate and safety over the long term – and in doing so reduce the need for school policing altogether.

By The Anarchothoughtism Collective
There’s a lot wrong with this little rustbelt city. It’s hard to love, almost painful. Yet people here try to do it anyway, often to our own detriment. We critique this city scathingly, but we love Milwaukee too. Black Milwaukeeans work hard to carve out a cultural niche. It’s a city that’s been shit on so much that it’s developed an inferiority complex; it demands recognition, for better or worse. I joke that living here would be funny - if it wasn’t our lives. Oftentimes it is funny, in a sad, nihilistic, and absurdist way. You have to laugh to keep from crying.
The structural issues of Milwaukee are deeply enmeshed, feeding into each other and compounding the struggles its Black underclass must face. The city’s cultural undercurrent is marked by distinct apathy, conservatism, and complacency. Individualist and bourgeois aspirations are rife. Small pockets of resistance bubble up, only to be extinguished by petit-bourgeois endeavors such as the non-profit industrial complex (NPIC), “activist” grifters, or the business class. This allows for highly fascistic elements to develop without resistance. The 2016 Sherman Park uprising is a prime example of such an “extinguishing”.
Milwaukee is known as the worst place for Black people to live, the most segregated city in the United States, and as “Harvard for pimps”. Black people have been locked out of homeownership, with only 25.2% of Black Milwaukeeans actually owning homes. A culture around stolen vehicles (we call them “stolies”) holds fast. “Kia Boys” and “Kia Girls” drive throughout the city recklessly, giving MPD (Milwaukee Police Department) a run for their money. To be fair, most people in Milwaukee drive recklessly. Lives are ended or altered by gun violence. You can’t trust tap water because of the lead pipes. Out-of-state slumlords own too much property, resulting in poorly-kept homes, leading to excessive electrical fires and evictions. The homeless remain mostly unseen, systemically pushed into surrounding forests. Milwaukee Police Department takes up more than half of the city budget, their pensions are bankrupting the city. As a result, libraries will close, fire stations and ambulances will operate at reduced capacities. In two to three years, a youth prison will be built here. Conditions feel overwhelmingly grim.
Tumblr media
Following the Murder of Syville Smith by MPD in 2016, Sherman Park erupted in flames and the uprising that ensued lasted for 3 days. Rioters looted and burned down a BP gas station. This was not senseless or random; Black community members had been frequently profiled by owners of this particular BP station, and frequently had Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) called on them. A month before the murder of Smith, an employee fired a gun in the air to intimidate a group of teenagers standing in front of the store, claiming that he feared for his life. As rioting progressed, rocks were hurled at local law enforcement, a bank was set ablaze, and a local liquor store was looted. The city of Milwaukee was transfixed, yet what followed in the wake of that moment seemed a dizzying blur: over 2-3 years, conversations shifted abruptly from police brutality, racism, and state violence to entrepreneurship. Almost as quickly as it happened, outside investors swooped in to develop what is now known as Sherman Phoenix, a collection of 30 Black-owned businesses housed within the former BMO Harris bank that was burned down during the riots.
Before this shift, Sherman Park resident and youth mentor/activist Vaun Mayes was framed by both MPD and federal agents for the attempted firebombing of the District 7 police station at the height of the riots. Though the case against him remains ambiguous in its resolution, Mayes’ case and eventual release from state custody garnered him an abundance of local media attention, alongside undue credit as a reliable community activist. Soon after that ordeal, Mayes began dubbing himself “Milwaukee’s Malcolm X”, though his politics were moderate and inconsistent. His influence would later play a role in stunting Milwaukee’s 2020 protests.
The officer who killed Sylville Smith was acquitted of the murder; however, he was discharged from MPD and spent time in prison for a series of sexual assaults. In 2020 Smith’s family was awarded a $4 million settlement from the City of Milwaukee. Over the past 10 years, Milwaukee has spent $40 million on police misconduct settlements. This is not justice, it never will be. Justice cannot exist for Black folx within this system, our own hands must forge a new path.
Non-profits: The Worst Jobs We’ve Ever Worked (CW: Rape, Sexual Assault)
Milwaukee non-profits are closely linked with MPD. More often than not, they aid in advancing the carceral state through partnerships and broad coalitional work. One member of our collective was introduced to the NPIC when they were 16 years old by members of the ACLU Wisconsin when the latter visited their high school classes to speak with students about their civil rights and electoralism. By the time our comrade hit 19, they had dropped out of college and had their first real experience working in the NPIC through an AmeriCorps program. They were paid $17,000/year and received additional food stamp benefits. For how little was paid, it could be argued that work involving social services and the NPIC is a twisted type of exploitation that normalizes the commoditization of marginalized peoples’ experiences even as it normalizes the extraction of their labor and their harassment/abuse within NPIC structures.
During their stint with this organization, our comrade worked directly with women involved in street-based prostitution. In this supposed “harm reduction-based” approach, our comrade was often forced to work directly with police to maintain the symbiotic relationship their employer held with district attorneys, the House of Correction (a county jail that falls under the Division of Adult Institutions but operates somewhat independently from them), and law enforcement organizations (LEOs) writ large. This placed our comrade and other workers in the impossible position of offering little material or social supports to trafficking victims in exchange for tracking them and discussing their cases regularly with police and community members that viewed the presence of trafficked women as a “blight.”
Our comrade remembers their time with this organization as one of the most traumatic periods of their life. As they worked to provide compassionate and appropriate care to victims of sexual violence, sometimes in emergencies, they were simultaneously experiencing violence within their org that overlapped the violence they were expected to help combat in the streets. Gender-based harassment from supervisors and assault at the hands of a co-worker some months into the job, coupled with the daily trauma absorption of the job, eventually took its toll; our comrade’s mental health declined, as did their performance, and they were let go. They recall there was relief in that moment and remained unemployed for a few months while seeking therapy to heal.
Another comrade never even made it that far. As a transplant, this comrade with years of nonprofit experience working with youth and other marginalized communities, decided to volunteer with various organizations to gain both a better map of the city and to better understand where they could apply their passion effectively. Despite becoming a dues-paying member of at least 2 supposedly radical orgs, the only jobs they were being told about were ones that would exacerbate pre-existing health problems. Through 2 different periods of homelessness, this comrade still managed to show up and organize or lend support wherever they believed good community work was being done. Eventually, our comrade’s persistence and organizing chops developed, and the local NPIC began sniffing around.
Our comrade began being flattered and specifically invited to “brainstorming sessions,” a quirky Milwaukee euphemism that essentially serves 3 functions for nonprofits: the first is crowdsourcing language and popular-if-inconsistent definitions of social problems; the second, to pull in and start cultivating so-called leadership skills in individuals who may be able to be exploited by nonprofits through low-pay positions or as uncompensated volunteers; the third function being pure extraction, wherein community members are invited to rough out projects or initiatives that grassroots formations seldom can bankroll, but pose no financial risk to NPIC orgs that regularly receive millions from the state to water down and scale up.
Catching onto the grift, however, is not always a guarantee that one’s boundaries around labor would be respected. When our comrade began politely declining invitations to these brainstorming sessions, they were eventually lured into applying for part-time positions with the same organizations that would allow them to keep their health benefits while earning an income, which made our comrade eagerly apply to all. Experience notwithstanding, our comrade found that the fishing expeditions of the brainstorming sessions were not yet done with them: though it took the better part of a year, during which our comrade filled out multiple applications, underwent numerous background checks, weirdly intensive demands for outlines of programming they had not yet been hired to facilitate, and oddly probing interviews with the occasional direct questions about their anarchist leanings, our comrade realized that these nonprofits had no intention of hiring them so much as simply extracting their labor - as well as intimate personal information - under the guise of community building. Some years after the compliments stopped, our comrade simply withdrew from the NPIC and organizing publicly, preferring to work only with those who respected their boundaries. For a disabled person who could not leave their home much, severing ties to the NPIC represented an end to the social life they badly needed for their well-being.
Abolish the NPIC, Abolish the Celebrity/Career Activist and Black Misleadership Class
NPIC culture demands much from marginalized workers while offering very little in return. Non-profits market themselves as more “just” or “equitable” workplaces for marginalized peoples, but often, they just offer the same capitalistic shit gilded in the rhetoric of false radicalism. In this way, the NPIC exploits the desires of those who wish to build a better world and change the material conditions of oppression knowing they never will be able - or inclined - to address oppression at its roots. Non-profits that portray themselves as “radical” or “revolutionary” are actively lying. The NPIC is an apparatus of an imperialistic, white supremacist, ableist, capitalistic state. It serves to redirect radical energies into neoliberal, ineffectual organizing methods. Its function is to maintain the status quo; those who disrupt or refuse to sell out are pushed out.
One of the worst byproducts of the NPIC and social media culture is the production of the “celebrity activist” or “career activist”. What we're describing is nothing new - sellouts have existed across generations. It’s become more complicated, nuanced, and insidious with the appropriation of radical aesthetics and language. When we think of this type of sellout, elements of George Jackson’s criticism against Bill Cosby and Black capitalism are applicable nearly 50 years later. “Black capitalism, black against itself. The silliest contradiction in a long train of spineless mindless contradictions…We can never learn to trust as long as we have them. They are as much a part of repression, more even than the real live, rat-informer-pig” (George Jackson, Soledad Brother, p. 237). The Black celebrity/career activists are rooted in the ideology of Black Capitalism, tainted by entrepreneurial (bourgeois) aspiration, and opportunism. Their politics are shallow and unprincipled. Coming out of the George Floyd Rebellion, one of the most prominent and glaring examples of this is Patrisse Cullors and the mishandling of donations made to the BLM (Black Lives Matter) Foundation. Despite being a “trained Marxist”, Patrisse accepted deals with Cadillac and owned several million-dollar homes while chapters of BLM struggled to organize on the ground. Patrisse profited in one of the most direct ways possible from the deaths and oppression of Black people. How many more Patrisse Cullors types do you need to see?
During protests against the police killing of Alvin Cole in Wauwatosa, Jay-Z’s Team Roc took the opportunity to generate positive press for the brand, posting bail and covering legal fees for those arrested, including Alvin Cole’s family. The celebrity also took out a full-page ad in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel calling for Alvin Cole’s murderer, Joseph Mensah, to be prosecuted. Additionally, Tamika Mallory made an appearance, offering a performative press conference. While support from celebrities like Jay-Z may appear beneficial on a surface level, the ultra-wealthy do not and will never sustain social movements or revolutionary activity: Jay-Z has repeatedly shown his allegiance to capital, and his support aims to co-opt the energy of mass movements and encourage the Black masses to buy into myths of Black Capitalism.
In Elite Capture by Olufemi O. Taiwo, the author references the work of Frantz Fanon, Jared A. Ball, and Franklin Frazier to elaborate on myths of the “Black Economy” and Black buying power. In describing African middle classes in post-colonial Algeria, Fanon postulated that this middle class would “capture, dilute and ultimately subvert the energy of anti-imperialist struggle.” Taiwo notes that Fanon’s prediction came to be, “The national independence movements supplanted formal colonial rule only to run headfirst into neocolonialism: a condition in which those young nations’ new ruling elite were either sharply constrained by or actively colluding with the corporations and governments of the former colonial powers - and the international system they dominated.”
Taiwo goes on to analyze Franklin Frazier’s Black Bourgeoisie and the idea of escaping racial strife through a separate Black economy, citing Booker T. Washington’s National Negro Business League. “The combined net worth of all 115 attendees at the inaugural National Negro Business League did not amount to even $1 million. By the time Fraizer wrote his book, more than six decades later, all eleven Black-owned banks in the nation combined did not represent the amount of capital held in the average local bank in smaller white cities.” Drawing from Ball, Taiwo concludes that investing in the idea of a Black economy is politically naive, a fruitless endeavor that would need to be birthed of our current political and economic reality of white supremacy and racial capitalism. He notes that myths of Black buying power and financial literacy only serve to place the onus on the poor instead of on the exploitative nature of capitalism. We see the myth persist to this day through endeavors such as Killer Mike’s Greenwood “Bank”. “The possibility of an insulated Black economy is the myth, while the immediate interests of a few well-positioned Black Folk provide the true impetus.”
For petty bourgeoise aspirationals and the ultra-wealthy, the NPIC provides the perfect platform for the co-optation of our mass movements. Protests become photo opportunities; elements of resistance and revolution are appropriated to market an individual's brand or NGO to philanthropists, funders, and sponsors. Brand recognition is key. Locally, we’ve witnessed executive directors and NGO boards claim police abolition, only to turn around and hire ex-police officers to perform union busting on their behalf. We’ve seen blatant misogynists and homophobes win the title of “Activist of the Year” throughout a near-endless stream of self-congratulatory awards ceremonies. Milwaukee suffers an ongoing plague of micro-celebrity activists, bolstered by an NPIC culture that actively blocks opportunities for effective, revolutionary organizing. Our point is simplistic, the conclusion feels trite, but it’s a message Milwaukeeans need to hear. If any real work is to get done, the NPIC and career/celebrity activism need to be abandoned or eventually destroyed.

*Note: Some non-profits do excellent work, and are well respected within the communities in which they operate. The non-profit legal structure can be used as a tool that allows grassroots and anarchist formations to operate more freely. However, within a $2 trillion industry employing 10% of the United States population, we find the types of non-profits mentioned above represent a microcosm within a majority. Members of our collective understand the benefits and contradictions of being involved in the NPIC as we have worked within the field and received services from the NPIC. This is not a judgment of those involved within the NPIC structure, it is a call to think critically about the structure.
How Milwaukee Got a Youth Prison: Past to Present (CW: Sexual abuse, Child abuse)
Milwaukee’s NPIC is deeply connected to the carceral justice system and policing, and many violence prevention programs and non-profits are incentivized to work with the police to receive funding from the city. Unsurprisingly, local non-profits ushered in a new youth prison in Milwaukee. To explain how this all came to fruition, we’ll need to lay some ground and talk about the Lincoln Hills and Copper Lakes crises that occurred over the course of a decade. Tracking everything that occurred at these facilities could amount to a separate book on its own, so we'll only be tackling a tiny fraction of events in this section.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the problems began in 2010-2011 under Republican Governor Jim Doyle’s administration. The number of youth prisoners had steadily decreased over the years and in 2011, inmate populations dropped to half of what they were in 2004. For the Doyle Administration, it financially did not make sense to continue running three separate facilities (Lincoln Hills located in northern Wisconsin, Ethan Allen School in southeastern Wisconsin, and Southern Oaks Girls School in southeastern Wisconsin): Lincoln Hills operated at a much lower cost than the other two facilities and state law mandated that a juvenile facility must remain open in northern Wisconsin. This law did not apply to southeastern parts of the state, where most of Wisconsin’s Black and incarcerated population stemmed from. By January 2011, Republican Governor Scott Walker was instated; he moved quickly to close Ethan Allen School and Southern Oaks Girls School, consolidating 100 prisoners into Lincoln Hills and doubling the prison population. Lincoln Hills was extremely short-staffed, the sparse population of northern Wisconsin being to blame. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel stated, “...juvenile justice experts around the nation were recommending smaller, more localized facilities, Wisconsin went in the opposite direction, consolidating operations in a remote setting.”
In February 2012, Racine County Circuit Judge Richard Kreul sent a memo to Scott Walker detailing a case of abuse. ”The memo Kreul sent to Walker described an incident in which an inmate from Racine was forced to perform oral sex on his roommate and then beaten unconscious. Workers learned of the assault at 4 p.m. They didn’t get the victim medical treatment for three hours.” [Milwaukee Journal Sentinel]. In 2014, when Milwaukee-based Public Defender Robin Dorman learned that one of her clients was not receiving medical treatment or being sent to classes, she quickly learned that her client was not alone. Upon discovering additional allegations of abuse and neglect, Dorman sent a memo to Milwaukee County Chief Deputy District Attorney Kent Lovern, who forwarded it to the Department of Corrections. By January 2015, a criminal probe was launched to investigate Lincoln Hills. What the investigations would unveil was deeply disturbing.
Most of the youth held in the facility were Black children from Milwaukee, though the facility was located in Irma, WI - 215 miles away from Milwaukee (a 3.5-hour drive). Horrendous abuse and corruption plagued these facilities, ranging from physical child abuse to suicide, and sexual abuse and harassment of minors. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel details the conditions inside the facilities, describing a teen who had his foot crushed by a prison guard. “Inside his room, Evans screamed and held up his foot so the staff could see the bleeding. The Milwaukee teen had lost parts of two small toes, but it would take prison officials nearly two hours to take him to a hospital 15 miles away.” Another incident involved a psychologist commenting on a teen girl's breasts, stating that they looked "rode hard and put away wet." The investigation also revealed that the prison’s lead trainer taught staff to pin inmates by putting their knees on inmates' backs - a technique that could cause suffocation and death. This trainer did not contact nurses when inmates were injured. There were 4 incidents where inmates had broken bones. By December 2015, the facility was raided by 50 state agents and the investigation was turned over to the FBI. Over a dozen staff members quit, were fired, or retired. A $25 Million settlement was reached for those who stayed at the facilities.
In 2018, Governor Walker announced a plan to dissolve Lincoln Hills into 5 smaller prisons spread out across the state. In April 2022, Democratic Governor Tony Evers signed a law that would bring a prison to Milwaukee. By January 2023, Milwaukee Common Council approved the zoning for a new youth prison to be built on the predominantly Black northwest side of Milwaukee. The Facility will not be operational until 2026. The decision was made to put the youth prison in a district that completely lacks an alderperson at the time of this writing (the previous alderwoman, Chantia Lewis, was removed from office after pleading guilty to embezzling $20,000 in campaign funds). Residents were taken off guard by the development of the prison and a majority opposed it, citing the potential decrease in property values as their primary concern. Many non-profit leaders spoke out in support of the facility's relocation to Milwaukee’s northwest side, however, framing it as a way to bring the youth inmates from Lincoln Hills “home”. Sharlen Moore, co-founder of the non-profit Urban Underground and youth justice advocate stated, “We have to figure something out. We have to put them somewhere.” Representatives from the non-profit Ex-incarcerated People Organizing (EXPO) echoed Sharlen’s sentiment. There are currently 69 youths that remain at the Lincoln Hills and Copper Lakes facilities. Alternatives to prisons exist, we’re dealing with people, not objects to shuffle around or “put somewhere.”
George Floyd Rebellion of 2020: A Clusterfuck
During the George Floyd Rebellion, the lack of solid organizing and security culture in Milwaukee led to Black misleadership and celebrity/career activists seizing control and altering the trajectory of a radical movement into neoliberalism along a counter-revolutionary line. The People’s Revolution (TPR) was formed in the early days of the George Floyd Rebellion and was initially spearheaded by Frank Nitty, Vaun Mayes, and Khalil Coleman. These “leaders” quickly proved dysfunctional, as accusations of homophobia and misogyny bubbled to the forefront almost immediately. Throughout 2020, we talked with individuals involved in TPR’s protests and though accounts varied from person to person, what we picked up on overall was that TPR’s leadership fostered an environment that made protests feel unsafe for Black women and queer individuals. On June 12, 2020, TPR leadership was called out in a Facebook live stream regarding accusations of misogynistic and derogatory language used toward queer protestors. While Vaun Mayes showed up to the live stream for “accountability”, Frank Nitty and Khalil Coleman did not. There were repeated attempts to reach out to Frank and Khalil, which seemed to be met with hostility. The presence of misogyny and homophobia are major red flags for any group claiming to be revolutionary. The Facebook Live stream did not provide the accountability process needed to change course. In an ideal world Frank, Vaun, and Khalil would have stepped down from their leadership positions within TPR and undergone a serious accountability process that involved their removal from movement and protest work, if only until genuine efforts towards transformation had occurred.
The effects of misogyny and what we’ll call “weak link politics” have been touched on repeatedly in writings such as Why Misogynists Make Great Informants, by Courtney Desiree Morris, and Basic Politics of Movement Security by J. Sakai and Mandy Hiscocks. As Morris succinctly points out, “There are serious consequences for choosing ignorance. Misogyny and homophobia are central to the reproduction of violence in radical activist communities. Scratch a misogynist and you’ll find a homophobe. Scratch a little deeper and you might find the makings of a future informant (or someone who just destabilizes movements like informants do).” In Basic Politics of Movement Security, Sakai details the story of an FBI informant known as “Tom” who played a role in destabilizing the Black Panthers. Tom got in with the Black Panthers by appealing to patriarchal values. Sakai recounts Tom being called out by a group of local women on suspicion of being an informant, “Oh, its politics that’s so hard for me to learn, ‘cause I had no education… I wanna learn, I’m sorry, give me another chance.” Tom rebuffed in a way that is somewhat similar to the accountability dodging Mayes did during the live stream referenced above. “I am ignorant to a lot of shit, you know? …as far as being a straight male versus y’all community (the LGBTQ+ community), there's a lot of shit I don’t understand… I don’t primarily deal with y’all community.”
We don’t draw this comparison to accuse Vaun or the former TPR leadership of being outright informants. Practically speaking, there’s no way for anyone to know unless evidence explicitly demonstrates otherwise. The point is not to badjacket or drum up needless suspicion. However, we draw the comparison to accentuate that an individual's politics, actions, and consistency should be examined with a discerning, critical eye. Trust and access should not be easily given to those who consistently show up with weak link politics. Sakai states, “...Security is not about being macho vigilantes or being super suspicious… Security is about good politics. That's why it's so difficult. And it requires good politics from the movement as a whole. This is demanded of us… Bad politics covered for agents…it’s that bad politics - like opportunism, patriarchy, sexism, and class privilege - rips up the fabric of our terrain, the area of our radical culture, and weaves it instead into that terrain all their old oppressor politics, their values.”

TPR slowly unraveled throughout the rebellion. Despite appointing themselves revolutionaries, TPR operated in multitudes of obvious contradictions. They frequently partnered with local elected officials and pushed electoralism, lobbying, and reform as a method of “revolution”. State representatives such as David Bowen and Jonathan Brostoff publicly aligned themselves with TPR, and attended marches consistently. “They use their resources to help as many people as possible and to push the system to be accountable, especially to Black and Brown people,” said David Bowen to Milwaukee Magazine in September 2020. The excess media attention around the George Floyd Rebellion provided the perfect stage for stooges to bolster their platforms and appeal to potential voters. While electoralism and aligning oneself with the state may seem like a clear pitfall to an experienced organizer or theorist aligned with revolutionary/liberatory movements, it bears explaining to those less familiar. Aligning oneself with politicians, elements of the state, or electoralism is explicitly counter-revolutionary:
“It isn’t revolutionary or materialist to disconnect things. To disconnect revolutionary consciousness from revolutionizing activity, to build consciousness with political agitation and educational issue-making alone is idealistic rather than materialist. The effect has been reformism rather than revolution. When any election is held it will fortify rather than destroy the credibility of power brokers. When we participate in this election to win, instead of disrupt, we’re lending to its credibility, and destroying our own.” (George Jackson, Blood In My Eye, Pg. 26)
TPR’s leadership brought forth a movement of cooptation, empty symbolism, and misdirection. It is no surprise that Vaun Mayes has recently aligned himself with MPD post-rebellion, advocating for increased police surveillance through ShotSpotter technology. According to Sheperd Express, ShotSpotter is an acoustics-based technology that locates potential gunshots via impulsive sound. The contract with ShotSpotter has cost the City of Milwaukee $3.7 million over the past 13 years. “I’d like my ComForce team to get access to ShotSpotter because when we hear shootings in our neighborhoods, it is sometimes difficult to find the location...We are here to help the police and protect the residents, and we are expanding…I think we are setting a standard on how true collaboration and unity is supposed to look. We want to work with the police,” said Mayes, referring to Community Task Force (ComForce), a non-profit he helms which regularly partners with MPD.

From a security culture standpoint, TPR’s practices were negligent and put protestors at risk. TPR’s marches often lacked street medics, leadership constantly live-streamed their whereabouts, and TPR provided little to no recourse, such as bail funds or free legal representation, for those arrested. Leadership also folded in with the likes of fascist groups such as the Bugaloo Boys, posing as street medics for TPR. The effects of this negligence culminated when the rebellion reached Wauwatosa and Kenosha. According to The Daily Montanan, Wauwatosa Police Department (WPD) managed to create a list of over 200 protestors, and a good portion of that list included members of TPR, as well as people who marched in solidarity with them. The list was created by Dominick Ratkowski, a crime analyst for WPD, and was utilized as early as mid-July 2020. The list was circulated amongst MPD, KPD (Kenosha Police Department), and the FBI office in Milwaukee. Up to 12 agencies received the list. Members of TPR were mailed tickets as high as $1300. The Daily Montanan reads, “On Aug. 28, Gibson (Milwaukee DA Investigator) asked for any lists or photographs of protesters to share with Kenosha. On Sept. 15 the list, which had been shared by Ratkowski, was sent to Kenosha PD Detective Pablo Torres, who worked for the department’s Special Investigations Unit at the time. ‘Here is an updated list of the subjects identified as members or associates of The People’s Revolution,’ Gibson’s email reads.” The screenshot below does not prove that Coleman or TPR leadership was feeding members' information to law enforcement agencies; it is mere conjecture, but we cannot dismiss it as a possibility.
Tumblr media
[This post was made on September 1, 2020]
Regardless of whether the intent was malicious or not, a lack of security practices essentially had the same effect as an informant or wrecker: TPR members and leadership had been arrested at several points during the rebellion, and during any of these arrests, police could have confiscated their cellphones to collect intelligence on members and associates. This is why maintaining anonymity is key - never bring a cell phone to a protest, and never record yourself or others engaging in protest activity. Your identity should be your most protected asset. Cover tattoos, piercings, or other identifying features and always wear plain, unbranded clothing. Consider utilizing a pseudonym during protests. Always remember your cell phone and other pieces of technology can act as a cop, and avoid the potentiality of surveillance as much as possible.
Our advice for those participating in protests and riots is to return to analog styles of communication (written notes, utilizing walkie-talkies, communicating face-to-face, implementing coded language, etc). Detailed in episode 8 of the Alphabet Boys podcast, an FBI program known as “Social Media Exploitation” was utilized during the George Floyd Rebellion. This program allowed the FBI and local law enforcement agencies to mine social media accounts and create files on individuals without probable cause. The host of Alphabet Boys, Trevor Aaronson, goes on to detail the story of a woman charged with a crime for throwing her bike down near a police officer. She was captured on a police body camera and identified by law enforcement through social media posts, specifically by matching photos of her biking gear with her attire in the video. Police were able to attain a warrant to search her home and she was charged with attempted aggravated assault of a police officer, a second-degree felony. Police reforms, such as body cameras, are weaponized against those who dare to resist the state. If there is a will to charge you with a crime, there is a way. People should always keep in mind that their social media presence is likely being monitored and should try to practice good digital hygiene. Intentional mass arrests are an outdated tactic of the ‘60s and ‘70s; in the present day, arrests should be avoided if possible - you do not want to be logged into any state system as it makes it easier for law enforcement to target and track you for an indeterminate length of time.
Ultimately, TPR’s influence managed to assimilate many young people into their organization, placing youth directly in harm's way. This disillusioned, traumatized, and embittered many young people. Tyrone Randall, a participant in TPR’s protests, was pinned by police, left on the ground, and struck by a car. Tyrone was left with broken ribs, a broken pelvis and thousands of dollars in medical debt. TPR’s failures fostered an environment that made many reluctant to return to grassroots organizing as a whole. Former members and youth of TPR were quickly assimilated into the NPIC once the organization grew stagnant.
Post-George Floyd Rebellion: Where are these niggas?
Post-rebellion TPR quickly dissolved, and few of the former leadership remain active. In April 2022, Khalil Coleman was found guilty in the first degree for a robbery that took place in Kentucky in February of 2021. Coleman attempted to rob a trap house with the coerced aid of a minor and was later sentenced to 10 years in prison. Coleman maintains that he is innocent via Facebook posts, and he has been soliciting support for his appeal through an online petition.
Around August 2020, Frank Nitty led a March from Milwaukee to Washington D.C. In the immediate aftermath of this commemorative journey, several scandals began to surround Nitty. Rumors of Nitty stealing and mishandling donations circulated on social media, which led to some accusing him of using the funds to take white women on dates. Additionally, a Facebook group of “sister-wives,” boasting nearly 200 members at one point, formed around Nitty. All jokes aside, around November 2020, Nitty was accused of sexually assaulting four separate women. He was arrested and held in jail for a short period before his bail was posted, and charges were never brought against him. After 17 months, prosecutors decided that there was not enough evidence against Nitty between the four women who accused him and dropped the charges completely. Based on Nitty’s history of misogyny, we believe the women who accused him. Nitty’s whereabouts and current activity remain unclear, as he has seemingly disappeared from Milwaukee altogether.
Vaun Mayes remains active in Milwaukee’s non-profit and organizing scene: He currently remains a leader of ComForce, engaging in ambulance chasing. Vaun has continuously aligned himself with the police, local politicians and even noted transphobe/huckster Dr. Umar Johnson.
Conclusion: Wrapping this shit up
2020 demonstrated that Milwaukee is not politically prepared to resist the rising tide of fascism. It is a frightening position to be in considering that the RNC (Republican National Convention) is coming to Milwaukee summer of 2024. The fascism Black people in Milwaukee have had to face has primarily been institutionalized, moderated through politicians, policing, prisons and racist state/city policy. The city has rarely had to face off directly against fascist demonstrators. There is no dedicated Black Bloc or anti-fascist presence prepared to push back against the fascists that will come to gather in Milwaukee summer of 2024. The city is seeking to import nearly 4,500 officers to Milwaukee for the convention. Frankly, we wouldn’t recommend an outright counter-demonstration against the 2024 RNC. Marginalized people should stay home the day the RNC comes to town. Those interested in preparation should get street medic training, and learn how to treat gunshot wounds. Black communities situated directly near the RNC should prepare their neighborhood or block in community self-defense tactics. Prepare for violence but do not seek it out.
Strategically there are stronger opportunities for resisting. The youth prison coming to Milwaukee’s northwest side should be resisted, and the youths that remain captive in Lincoln Hills should not be abandoned in cages of the state. A non-carceral solution is desperately needed. We're not sure what the exact solution looks like for Milwaukee, but answers have already been conceptualized in writings such as Instead of Prisons by the Prison Research Education Action Project. The text details an experiment done in Massachusetts in 1972 to decarcerate the state’s juvenile prison system. The majority of youths returned home on parole, some were sent to a local university to work with a student advocate for a month. The text continues, “The administrative system was decentralized, with seven regional offices set up to make all decisions about individual youth placements and needs. Almost all services for the juveniles were contracted from private agencies, resulting in the creation of a wide range of community programs.” It advocates cutting ties with the criminal justice system, including instances of parole and probation, releasing prisoners to community-controlled support and peer groups on a case-by-case basis instead. The writers advocate that instead of serving the rest of their sentences, former prisoners should be involved in restoration processes. The strategies mentioned above are intermediary steps towards prison abolition. The authors note:
“We caution strongly that all interim as well as long-range strategies be considered only after conferring with knowledgeable prisoner and ex-prisoner groups. Interim policies crucially affect the lives of prisoners still inside the system and many ex-prisoners on the streets. What seems a paltry and therefore unacceptable change to those outside the wall, might be a highly significant and desirable change for those who are caged or under control in the streets. If there are differences in strategies between prisoners who have experienced the day to day reality of prisons and prison changers who have not, take the time to hammer out differences and reach agreement. Strategies and tactics that are not in unity weaken the total movement toward systems change.”
People interested in building a truly revolutionary movement should study the principles and histories of anarchism, the Anarkata turn, Black radicals, and anti-state communism within groups. White organizers need to step back and follow the lead of Black radicals or get out of the way. Deprioritize the visibility of individual organizers and the mindset of individualized leadership or hierarchies. The aim should be an anonymous and autonomous mass movement of free association that centers issues of the most oppressed, the most marginalized, the problems of the lumpen/lumpen-proletariat (Black, QTGNC folks, those living with disabilities, the poor, the houseless, etc…). The organizing methodology outlined in Move Like Mycorrhizae from Afrofuturist Abolitionists of America, demonstrates best practices. Organizing in this way provides a layer of security and protection from opportunists, clout chasers, and potential informants or state agents.
We can’t tell you what to study, what to do, or how to organize. We can only suggest that anyone who reads this zine study past and present liberation movements of colonized people, both within and outside of the United States. Learn where others have failed or succeeded. If the conditions are right, repeat what has proven successful and try not to repeat mistakes. It's the principle of Sankofa; meaning “go back and fetch it” - take what is useful, leave behind what is not. Studying, organizing, and remaining principled in the liberation struggle is a lifelong commitment. We’ll never stop learning; movements will change, tactics will change. New theories and organizing methodologies will need to be established from the foundation of what previous Black radicals left behind. Studying and organizing alongside BARs (Black Anarchic Radicals) and the Anarkata turn guided us to our current political trajectory. We don’t believe in authoritarian methodologies, cults of personality, or that Black people need a “leader” to effectively organize and win. There will be no vanguard to lead the masses to revolution, nor is it the role of the political theorist.
Frantz Fanon stated,
“To educate the masses politically does not mean, cannot mean, making a political speech. What it means is to try, relentlessly and passionately, to teach the masses that everything depends on them; that if we stagnate it is their responsibility, and that if we go forward it is due to them too, that there is no such thing as a demiurge, that there is no famous man who will take responsibility for everything, but that the demiurge is the people themselves and the magic hands are finally only the hands of the people.”
As the tide of fascism rises, as climate change accelerates, as technocratic corporations advance, as living conditions under capitalism worsen - political and state repression will become more visceral. We saw it in 2020, with state agents snatching protestors off the streets in unmarked vehicles. We saw it in Kenosha when local law enforcement stood in league with fascist armed militias. We’re seeing it in motion with the development of Cop City in Atlanta, a project with international implications to further militarize the police, preparing them for urban warfare with citizens. If there is any time to gain urgency, to connect and organize within your community, it’s now. The politics of capitalism, of fascism, is ultimately a politic of slow death and suffering for the many in exchange for short-term gain and excess for a few. We hope to see the end of this fetid, vile system in this lifetime or the next.

Eric Albert Forman (born March 18, 1960), the Familial Lore...
He's the son of Reginald "Red" (born 1927) and Katherine "Kitty" (born 1931). He has one sister, Laurie (born 1958).
From his father's side, he's a mix of Irish and English. On his paternal grandfather Albert's side, his Irish ancestors fled from the potato famine. On his paternal grandmother Bernice's side, his Irish side was firmly for "home rule," and Bernice's parents left Ireland due to "political disagreements" (ie, her English father fell in love with her Irish mother). Here, the English side were protestant Northern Ireland colonists. And on Albert's side, his (young, he was literally a child) servant Irish father fell for an English student. So, lots of intermingling here, early on. :)
From his mother's side, he's all Swedish. Both sides came to Wisconsin around the same time, in the 1840s/50s, when Scandinavians settled in Wisconsin and Minnesota. The Sigurdsons are a pillar of the community, whereas the Holms (Bea's family) are not. They're petty criminals, and the Sigurdsons take in Bea and her younger sister Eva (a Laurie type), much like the Formans took in Hyde.
******
Now, more on to the relatively recent stuff.
His Father's Side:
Eric's great-grandpa John (the Irish servant boy) lost his father when he was really young. John and Albert didn't get along, at all. John was far more of a pacifist, and disagreed with WWI. Albert literally ratted him out. John outlives Albert by a few years (the heart attacks run on Albert's mother's side of the family), and is around long enough to influence Eric. To sprinkle in the first seedlings of rebellion, where Eric questions the Vietnam War.
His grandparents:
Albert John Forman (1897-1963): Red's hardass father, and Eric's paternal grandfather. He's a WWI vet, scarred from the trenches with some obvious PTSD (back then, it was called shellshock). He's worked at the car plant, a Ford assembly line, for most of his life. He thinks college education is just for elitists who have nothing better to do than twiddle their thumbs and discuss some crazy theories, and encourages his children to go into the workforce instead of wasting time at school. Yet, he "wastes time" as an amateur photographer, and has his own dark room. Even when money is tight.
He dies when Eric is really young (the heart problems come from his mother, who also died of a heart attack at a relatively young age), and his father John (a bookstore owner, amateur photographer, and occasional librarian and writer) outlives him by several years. John makes far more of an impact on Eric's young mind, and the stories he hears about Albert are more horror stories than anything.
Bernice Ann Forman (nee Larson) (1898-1976): Red's mother, and Eric's paternal grandmother. She's a lot like Albert, but she's a touch softer. She was the one who first called Red "Red," for example. She loves fishing, boating, and sailing, as does Red; Albert was in the army, but Red ultimately chose the Navy.
His uncles:
John Patrick "Jerry" Forman (born 1925): Red's "perfect" older brother. He's a lot like Red, but he's far more socially adept. He's the chief of the Brookfield Police Department (a suburb of Milwaukee), and makes a lot more money than Red. He and his wife Evelyn have three daughters; Ellen, Christine, and Rachel. And they also had a son, John, who died young from leukemia.
Paul Lawrence Forman (born 1936): Red's younger brother. Unscarred from the perils of war and privileged for being part of the younger duo (who were treated less harshly, by comparison), Paul becomes an engineer. Like Red always wanted, but his father never let him become. He's married to his childhood sweetheart Bev, and they have one daughter, Sarah.
Martin "Marty" James Forman (born 1939): Red's youngest brother. He escaped from the stranglehold of the Forman family, but he's still battling with himself. He's gay, and for most of his life, he's still firmly in the closet. In the mid-1970s, his recent divorce from his wife Denise pushes him further back. Into denial, before finally coming to terms with himself in the early-mid 1980s. And accepting himself, even though most of the world will not.
His Mother's Side:
His maternal grandparents, Albert "Burt" (yes, there are two Alberts) and Beatrice "Bea" were never really in love. Burt lost his first wife to breast cancer, and he was still hurting when he married Bea, who is a manipulative control freak. When the writing's on the wall and divorce is in the air, Bea threatens that he'll never see the girls again. Bea yells, and when Burt can't find the personal happiness he desires, he drinks.
When the girls are old enough to not be mere pawns in Bea's games, they both almost always side with Burt. In turn, Burt almost always sides with his daughters, instead of his nasty wife.
Albert "Burt" Eric Sigurdson (1901-1978): Kitty's father, and Eric's grandfather. After his brother Oscar died in WWI, he was set to inherit the family farm. But he didn't want that life, and chose to become a teacher instead (and an amateur social worker, like his mother). He constantly houses local misfits, and although he is often quiet, he's more than willing to lend a helping hand.
His soulmate was definitely his first wife Leila, and not Bea, but his close "friend" and co-worker Iris is more of his soulmate than Bea will ever be. When Burt is quick to admit that he's in love with Iris and wants a divorce, Bea nips that in the bud. Fast.
Beatrice "Bea" Lorraine Sigurdson (nee Holm) (1904-1989): Kitty's mother, and Eric's grandmother. Her parents were petty criminals, making a ruckus for the hell of it, and although she didn't choose that life, she's still a horrible person. She constantly puts her daughters down, and tries to control the world around her. Maybe it's a result of having no control over her terrible, unruly childhood, but either way? She reeks of bitterness, and maybe Burt once felt bad for her, but she puts it on herself.
His uncle and aunt:
Oscar Albert Sigurdson (born 1922): Burt and Leila's son, Kitty's half-brother, and Penny's father. He's a scientist and chemist. He's rumored to have some really, really vague involvement with the Manhattan Project.
Paula Lorraine Sigurdson (born 1934): Burt and Bea's daughter, and Kitty's sister. She's Princess Margaret, and Kitty's Princess Elizabeth. Kitty's perfect, and Paula seems to be the loser of the bunch. In high school, she's in a turbulent on-off relationship with the "loser" Bradley brother Ronnie. Her first and only child Clark, born when she was sixteen, is put up for an open (ish) adoption, and a second pregnancy and a subsequent botched abortion render her infertile. Her luck improves when she moves to Indianapolis, after a long time of wallowing in Chicago (and continuing to have an on-off relationship with Ronnie).

Boy, 5, in critical condition after 8-year-old family friend shoots him with gun.
WAY TO GO TEXAS ONE WAY TO THIN THE HERD HUH LET'S HAVE SOME MORE BOYS UNDER THE AGE OF 18 WITH GUNS. I HAVE AN IDEA LET'S HAVE THE NRA AND ALL YOU GOOD LOVING TONY PEOPLE PASS THE LAW THAT SAYS ANY BOY UNDER THE AGE OF 12 SHOULD BE ABLE TO OWN AN AK-47 AND USE IT WHEN NECESSARY. YEEHAW
A five-year-old boy remains in a critical condition in hospital after an eight-year-old family friend shot and wounded him.
Houston Police Department were called to a home in Houston Gardens at 12.30pm on Saturday after reports of a shooting.
The boy's dad took the eight-year-old to a hospital and he was later transported by helicopter to another - with his condition said to be critical, according to police.
Commander Jonathan Halliday revealed the older child, who was described as a family friend, had a gash on his head and was taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution.
However, details surrounding his injuries have not been released.
Mr Halliday said: "When they arrived, they learned that a five-year-old had been shot one time reportedly by an eight-year-old."
Police confirmed three people are being held in connection with the shooting - but no charges have been brought.
The officer said: "We know that one adult was inside the house, but we're not sure the total number of people."
Mr Halliday said it was not clear how the older boy got his hands on the gun but revealed "they're all family friends".
There was at least one adult at home when the gunshot went off - with the police's department for major assaults investigating the shooting.
The shooting comes just weeks after a young boy allegedly shot dead his mother because she refused to buy him a virtual reality headset.
The 10-year-old suspect, from Milwaukee in the US state of Wisconsin, initially told police that the shooting was an accident.
However he later changed his story and said he intentionally aimed the gun at his mother, 44-year-old Quiana Mann, before pulling the trigger just before 7am on November 21.
The youngster has been charged an adult with first-degree reckless homicide due to Wisconsin law's which states kids as young as 10 must be charged as adults for serious crimes.
The child's lawyers are trying to have the case transferred to a juvenile court.
His lawyer, Angela Cunningham, described the case as "an absolute family tragedy".
The boy, who was described by family members as having mental health issues, is currently being held in juvenile detention.

On the morning of July 13th, 2009, residents of Milwaukee, Wisconsin awoke to news that a 40-year-old man had been found murdered in the 4700 block of N. 35th St. This report was immediately concerning to local resident Bindu Derksen - as the deceased man described in the article matched the description of her children's father, Paul Gayle. Bindu rushed to Paul's residence to look for him, only to find he was not there. Shortly thereafter, the police confirmed Bindu's fears: the man who was killed the night before was, in fact, Paul Gayle. He had been shot to death.
Paul was born in Jamaica, and he moved to the United States as a teenager. He met Bindu a few years later, and the couple went on to have two children together. The two eventually parted ways but continued to get along as co-parents. In fact, Paul called Bindu shortly before he was killed. He told her that he had to see her, but he gave no further elaboration. Bindu expected him to come over to her residence, but he never showed up. She would later learn that Paul was shot and killed a short time after their phone conversation ended.
No suspects or persons of interest have ever been publicly announced in Paul's case. A motive for his murder also remains unclear. Paul worked at various nursing homes in the area, and he also worked for a plastics company. In his spare time, he worked as a part-time DJ at a local nightclub. Paul was also a loving and supportive father to his children, who were teenagers at the time of his death. By all accounts, Paul was a well-rounded individual, and it does not appear that he had any known enemies.
Over a decade has passed since Paul's tragic murder, and the case still remains unsolved. Very few updates have been provided about the status of the investigation. If you have any information that could help solve the case, please contact the Milwaukee Police Department at (414) 933-4444.

5. what was your character's dream job as a kid? is it different than what their career ended up being?
for Selene,,
THANKS SM FOR THIS ASK!!!!!
Yes and no, for the last question!
Ever since she was super young Selene wanted to be a detective.
She was essentially raised by her grandparents since her mom Genevieve was so busy bouncing between various odds and ends jobs that she was practically out of the picture, and her father Arthur was a detective working in the city of Milwaukee. Selene would hear about the good deeds Arthur would do, all the criminals he'd catch, all the investigations he would be a part of, from the news, and she knew she wanted to be just like him! Oddly enough, his death--a wintertime car accident--was more inspiration for her to become a detective... she almost felt a sense of duty in filling that 'void' her father's death might've left in the police department. As she grew older, this want to become a detective also became a drive to prove herself capable as a mute woman going into law enforcement.
So she went to school and studied hard, and eventually landed a job with the Milwaukee Police Department--working in practically the same building as her father did before he passed away. But she wasn't technically a true detective the way she'd hoped. Instead, at the time Those Red Nights begins, I currently write her as a rookie Criminal Investigator, meaning she handles more smaller case crimes. Her work is unfulfilling for her (since as an adult she isn't really motivated by the thought of helping people, but rather making herself seem capable and strong), so she will often help Apollo in solving his cases... despite frustration from the higher-ups.
