Mi experiencia en la Victory Road World Cup 2022

Disclaimer: Me tomó un rato escribir esto, sólo por no saber si hacerlo. Al final decidí hacerlo porque a) es MI idea, b) me aumenta MI ego y c) fuck it, es mio. Sé que hay jugadores que les fue mejor que a mi (Juanma <3), pero considerando que fue el primer torneo por equipo que me fue bien, creo que voy a aprovechar el egoboost. Sí demoré en postear todo por el simple hecho que quería que terminara el Mundial de Londres.

Primero antes que nada, tengo que agradecerle a Juanma y a Agus (MariMari) por convencerme a jugar la VCL (organizada por Neme y ayudado por Vicky, Odric, Locke y otros). En teoría no iba a jugar ninguna ronda, pero me terminaron convenciendo y terminé jugando un par de rondas (terminando con un respetable 2-3 en sets, siendo que uno fue 0-1 por temas administrativos).

Entonces llegado el Mundial de Victory Road, tenía 2 objetivos importantes. a) sacarme la mufa de no haber ganado nunca en un torneo por selecciones b) mantener el nivel mostrado en la VCL

También debo admitir que los formatos con restricteds, es el formato que más odio, pero también es el formato que mejor me siento jugando, so… ayuda.

Con Uruguay, nos tocó jugar la primera fase de grupos contra Brasil, Guatemala y Grecia, y luego contra Polonia, Taiwan y España. La última ronda no la jugué por compromisos que me impedían estar disponible, así que jugué 5 sets, y terminé 3-2.

Con el diario del Lunes, haberlo llevado a Game 3 lo considero un logro, hasta sintiendo por momentos que pude haberme robado el set. G1 estuvo cerca, terminando un 2v1 de Eleki/Zacian contra Groudon, pero dependía del daño que tenía Groudon, el daño que hacía con Zacian antes de tirar Hyper Beam. No sé si jugaba diferente (capaz algún que otro Protect antes) G2 cambié el plan y lo outplayé. G3 él hizo tremendos ajustes y yo cegado por mi confianza me fui outplayado.

Lástima que Venu no sirvió, pero controlar a Lugia con Thundurus mientras me ocupaba del resto de los Poke fue buena idea. Siento que a pesar que perdí un Poke turno 1, estaba controlado el resto.

En G2 intenté algo, pero la batalla mental ya la había perdido. Una lástima porque preparando el team me sentía cómodo, y aún jugando bien, de la forma que Maciej jugó capaz que perdía, pero creo que podría haber sido más parejo. No tengo más excusas porque en sí es 100% mi culpa y yo jugué pésimo.

Honestamente G1 tuve un poco de suerte con algunos miss claves. G2 me sorprendió con el modo TR del team y aparte hago una mala jugada clave en no stallear TR. Ya G3 entendí lo que tenía que hacer y lo pude controlar.

Conclusiones: Overall, quedé conforme con mi resultado y cómo jugué. Creo que mi mayor arrepentimiento fue contra Polonia, que creo que pude haber hecho un papel más digno, pero en sí, me tocó jugar contra jugadores de tremendo nivel y me pude plantar de buena manera. Entre la VCL y el Mundial me obligó a hacer cosas que hasta hoy hacía poco, que es estudiar el meta, ver videos, hacer calcs, etc. Aún no tengo el nivel de teambuilding, pero esto ayuda a entender las amenazas del meta que se juegue, y ver mejores opciones. Ya esto dejó de ser "tirar 6 bichos y listo" o "agarrar un team y vamo que vamo", sino que me obligó a meterle un pienso and actually play.

Ahora estoy enfocado en la VCL Season 2, en la que se juega el formato Spikemouth y cuando salga Scarlet and Violet, se cambia, no me gusta personalmente eso, pero es lo que hay...

St. Hyacinth's Church, 1414 W. Becher St., is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The Milwaukee Sentinel account of the first service April 1, 1883 at the newly built church describes it as "surrounded to a great extent by the open prairie, the front particularly looking out on a broad unbroken spread of rolling fields." The reporter goes on to note that the Milwaukee brick structure possessed a "lofty bell tower overlooking a few little cottages." A Catholic church in that part of the city was sorely needed, and representatives from every Milwaukee Catholic church were among the hundreds of men, women and children who attended the first service. The inside of the building was packed, and hundreds more knelt on the ground outside on a cold, bleak Milwaukee day to participate in the mass. This view of the church, a South Side landmark, was published on a penny postcard issued by the Polonia Americana Album Publishing Co. of Chicago. Throwback Thursday: Halloween 1924

As we prepare for this year’s Halloween festivities, we also reminisce about Halloweens past.  This black and white image depicts a 1924 ‘Haloween’ party here in Milwaukee, complete with cornstalk decorations, a creepy Jack-o-lantern, and a very pensive child playing a very festive Halloween horn.

It’s Boxing Day!

As is our tradition on this day, we present a post that has nothing really to do with Boxing Day, but everything to do with Boxing. This year we thought we’d have a little pugilistic fun with Milwaukee artists Marc Tasman’s and Clayton Haggarty’s boxer installations from this year’s Look Here! project. You may recall that the project invited 15 Milwaukee-area artists to create new work based on their research in UW-Milwaukee Libraries’ distinctive collections, including Special Collections, UWM Archives, Digital Collections, and the American Geographical Society Library. One of the images Tasman and Haggarty researched was a 1920 photograph of Milwaukee boxer Emil Kayer from the UWM digital collection Milwaukee Polonia, digitized from a collection of photographs from the studio of Roman Kwasniewski preserved in the UWM Archives.   Shown here are:

Basilica of St. Josaphat (Milwaukee, WI)

The Basilica epitomizes the striving of early Polish immigrants to express their ethnic heritage, spiritual devotion, and patriotic pride by building impressive houses of worship. The first Poles came to Milwaukee in the 1840s, but their numbers did not become significant until after the Civil War. By the late 1800s, Polish immigrants were streaming into Milwaukee by the thousands, quickly becoming the second largest ethnic group in the nation’s most German city. There were seven Polish Catholic churches in Milwaukee by 1900, each with its own parochial school.

Crown of Polonia: "As regular readers know, I emigrated to Poland from Milwaukee, a port city on Lake Michigan. No one knows where Milwaukee is when I’m in Poland, so I usually say, „If you head north from Chicago along the lakeshore, the next big city you encounter is Milwaukee.” People nod as if they understand — at least the conversation can go on. That northern route is the path I take each time I come back from Poland to visit my family in America. My parents usually pick me up at O’Hare, the Chicago airport. Then we go up on one of the Interstate Highways built across the continent in the 1950s. (They were supposed, among other things, to help the U.S. Army in case of Soviet invasion.) As the car noses over the frontier between Illinois and Wisconsin, I start looking for a copper dome over the horizon. A bend in the road, and there it is: the massive brown balloon supported by sandstone piers with clocks facing the cardinal directions. It’s a symbol of my city. But it’s not a library or some great civic temple. There’s a cross atop that dome. It’s the Basilica of Saint Josaphat. Poles built it.

The Basilica of Saint Josaphat: an angel holds the holy water font. The walls vibrate with sconces and scrollwork and trompe l’oeil marble. A slick stone floor stretches to the main altar, 50 yards away. Beyond the baldachin, in vivid oils, a bishop in red is ready to die. That man, of course, is Josaphat Kuntsevych (Jozafat Kuncewicz), of the Order of Saint Basil the Great, a monk and “archeparch” killed at Vitebsk in November of 1623. Here he is treated as an icon of the Catholic West against Eastern Darkness. The altarpiece was executed by Gonippo Raggi, a painter sent to Milwaukee from Rome by Pope Pius XI, who as papal nuncio in Warsaw had survived the invasion of Poland by the Bolsheviks. Pius loved Polonia.

By the way, it’s not a politically-correct picture: an Orthodox cleric in a high black kamilavka points his bony finger in accusation at Josaphat while a peasant with a big red beard raises the axe to murder him. Ecumenical dialogue, anyone?

Look up: the dome that soars 76 meters above the street is blank on the outside, but here on the inside it swarms with life. Apostles. Fathers of the Church. Celestial bodies. Eight windows with eight different Madonnas. Giant canvasses that follow Raphael. And, in huge gold letters around the base, this verse from the First Book of Kings: “I have hallowed this house, which thou hast built, to put my name there for ever; and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually.” Except it’s in Polish, lest we forget who made this place. . . .

They built it. Because they could not afford to hire labor, they gave their own work. The washerwoman came home, made the children something to eat, then shifted debris from the foundations of the edifice, one apron-load at a time. Her husband drove the horse that hauled the sledge that carried the dirt to the dump site west of the Kinnickinnic River. Her brother hustled blocks up the scaffold. People still tell these stories in Milwaukee.

Go there on a Sunday now. The basilica parish is administered by Conventual Franciscans, some with names like Poczworowski. They have one of the best choirs in town. (I have heard this choir give a hesitant rendition of Serdeczna Matko, which they call „our parish song.”) The grand organ throbs and thickens the air into honey. Ladies in fur coats who’ve come in from the suburbs — some, the granddaughters of washerwomen — sit next to Mexican maids, the new arrivals, who rustle in nylon jackets. And after the Sanctus they’re all on their knees. Because this place is holy, hallowed by God, and from time to time, in this time as in all times, God’s people need to stop in and see Him."

9/01/2019 3.11 miles/5.01 kilometers I did it! (Part Two) YTD: 565.94 miles

This was a VERY DIFFICULT 3ish mile run. My legs were SO angry at me for yesterday. But I did it! Had to alter my course because there’s a GIANT polish food fest smack in the middle (ok, at the beginning) of my usual neighborhood 5k route. Looks like I was able to adjust pretty well. I thought I could re-route down Avondale (instead of Lipps) but that was blocked off too, so I ran straight to Milwaukee, down to Lawrence, did a tiny turnaround on Lawrence and was back on my way.

The festival (Taste of Polonia) takes up well more than the entire bottom quarter of this pic.

BTW we’ll be going there to stuff the kids with pierogies later.

Meet Our Playwrights

Moving Stories comprises five short plays all inspired by one basement Edgewater apartment. Each play explores the varying reasons we move, told through the lens of five very different playwrights:

Erin Austin co-founded LRP with a really excellent group of creatives back in 2013.  Since then, she’s written for and/or produced eight of LRP’s site-inspired productions. Outside of LRP, she is an avid collaborative playwright and screenwriter. Recent writing credits include collaborations with Tellin’ Tales Theatre, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Chicago Dramatists, Greenhouse Theater, American Theatre Company, and Hub Theatre. When not writing plays, Erin writes and produces content for educational videos and computer games. She has an MFA in Writing for the Screen + Stage at Northwestern University (2013). Jonathan Baude is a Chicago-based playwright and humorist. Jonathan's plays have been produced in Chicago, St. Louis, and Norman, Oklahoma. He has received awards of varying impressiveness for his plays about President McKinley’s assassin, star-crossed chess partners, and how cool dragons are. He also collaborated with Brian Golden on the story for the spec pilot Shitty Hall, which was named a Semi-Finalist for the 2017 PAGE International Screenwriting Award for TV Drama Pilot. Jonathan has been a producing playwright with Living Room Playmakers since 2015, and he still hasn’t pitched some of his weirdest ideas.

Minita Gandhi is an actress/playwright/writer who was born in Mumbai, India. Raised primarily in San Francisco, she is proud to have called Chicago her artistic home for over 8 years. MUTHALAND is her first full-length play. It was workshopped at Silk Road Rising for their Solo Festival, selected for the Ignition Festival of new plays at Victory Gardens Theater, and invited to the Raven Theater for a special performance sponsored by the Indo-American Heritage Museum.  It will also appear in Pacific Conservatory Theatre’s 2018/19 season. She can be seen in the recurring role of Dr. Prospere on NBC's Chicago Fire, and has appeared on Fox's hit show Empire, NBC's Crisis, ABC's Betrayal, Fox's The Chicago Code, and was The Onion News Network's anchor, Nina Shankar. Minita has worked at a number of regional theaters across the country including Berkeley Repertory Theater, The Arena Stage, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, and Lookingglass Theater. She has been directed by Tony award winning adaptor and director Mary Zimmermann, and originated the role of Priya, in Silk Road Rising's World Premiere production of Rajiv Joseph's, The Lake Effect.

Jenni Lamb is a Chicago-based playwright and former improviser. Her plays include Mother Lode, Quiver, 12th and Clairmount, Memento Polonia, Period Piece, Thou Proud Dream, Ellen Bond, Union Spy and Sickly Sulphur/Florid Arabesque. Jenni’s plays have had readings or productions with The Goodman Theatre, The Road Theatre (LA), The Gift Theatre, American Theatre Company, Stage Left Theatre, Route 66, Black Box Acting Studio, Wordsmyth Theatre (Houston), and Northwestern University. Her play Quiver received an honorable mention from the Kilroy List and she was a member of the Goodman Playwrights Unit. Jenni is a producing playwright with Living Room Playmakers and a Resident Playwright at Chicago Dramatists. She holds an MFA in Writing for the Screen and Stage from Northwestern University.

Alvaro Saar Rios' plays have been performed in New York City, Hawaii, Milwaukee and all over Texas. Rios has received commissions from various organizations, including The Alley Theatre, Houston Grand Opera, and Honolulu Theatre for Youth. His award-winning play Luchadora! is published by Dramatic Publishing Inc. He is also the co-founder of The Royal Mexican Players, a national touring performance troupe. Mr. Rios holds an MFA in Writing for the Stage and Screen from Northwestern University. Alvaro recently moved to Chicago from Milwaukee and is a Resident Playwright at Chicago Dramatists.

-Hoy se  conmemora el Día Mundial de las personas sin hogar. Este día nace de la necesidad de crear conciencia y propuestas para ayuda a las personas que no poseen un lugar en donde vivir; algunos les llaman “vagabundos” pero el término es considerado erróneo. El término de “persona sin hogar”, o también conocido como indigente, son aquellas personas -adultos, menores y de cualquier sexo- que como su nombre lo dice, no poseen una vivienda y tienen la necesidad de sobrevivir en la intemperie como puede ser la calle, portales, etc. Este problema es mucho más renuente en la ciudades grandes y suburbios, por lo que se han creado albergues en busca de proporcionar una ayuda a las personas que carecen de un techo a causa de una ruptura encadenada, brusca y traumática de sus lazos familiares, sociales y laborales.

-1493: Cristóbal Colón ‘descubre’ Jamaica y Puerto Rico, además de circunnavegar buena parte de Cuba.

-1582: el afamado poeta y dramaturgo inglés William Shakespeare, de 18 años, se casa con Anne Hathaway de 26, embarazada de tres meses. El 26 de mayo de 1583, la hija primogénita de la pareja, Susanna, será bautizada en Stratford. El 2 de febrero de 1585 un hijo, Hamnet, y otra hija, Judith, nacidos mellizos, fueron asimismo bautizados. Hamnet murió a los once años.

-1694: muere en Osaka (Japón) el poeta Matsuo Basho que estableció el ‘haiku’ como una composición poética de 17 sílabas.

-1757: nace William Blake, poeta y pintor británico. Poeta, pintor y grabador inglés. Aunque permaneció en gran parte desconocido durante el transcurso de su vida, actualmente el trabajo de Blake cuenta con una alta consideración. Por la relación que en su obra tienen la poesía y sus grabados respectivos suele ponerse a Blake como ejemplo del «artista total». Según el periódico The Guardian, «William Blake es con gran margen el mayor artista que Gran Bretaña ha producido»

-1814: en Londres, el periódico The Times se convierte en el primero en el mundo en imprimirse con máquina de vapor.

-1820: nace Friedrich Engels, filósofo y revolucionario alemán. Amigo y colaborador de Karl Marx, fue coautor con él de obras fundamentales para el nacimiento de los movimientos socialista, comunista y sindical, y dirigente político de la Primera Internacional y de la Segunda Internacional.

-1821: Panamá declara su independencia de la corona española y se une voluntariamente a la Gran Colombia.

-1943: Iósif Stalin, Franklin D. Roosevelt y Winston Churchill celebran una conferencia en Teherán. La Conferencia de Teherán constituyó el punto culminante de la cooperación en el seno de la Gran Alianza. Los éxitos del ejército soviético y la inminencia de la apertura de un segundo frente en Europa occidental permitieron que el primer encuentro entre Stalin, Churchill y Roosevelt se desarrollara en un ambiente de gran cordialidad. Las decisiones principales que se adoptaron fueron las siguientes: Acuerdo sobre la partición y desmembramiento de Alemania tras la derrota del régimen de Hitler. -1961: nace Alfonso Cuarón, guionista y director de cine mexicano. Ganador en 2014 del Premio de la Academia como Mejor Director. Se le considera uno de los cineastas mexicanos más prometedores de su generación, junto a otros como Guillermo del Toro o Alejandro González Iñárritu quienes también han conseguido trascendencia internacional en los últimos años.

-1965: en EE.UU., el presidente designa el día de la oración nacional, en memoria de las víctimas de la Guerra de Vietnam.

-1971: finaliza la erupción del volcán Teneguía de La Palma (Canarias).

-1987: nace Karen Gillan, actriz británica. Conocida por ser parte del elenco de producciones como Guardianes de la Galaxia, Oculus, Dr. Who, entre otras.

-1990: finaliza el mandato de Margaret Thatcher como Primera Ministra del Reino Unido.

-1994: muere Jeffrey Dahmer, asesino en serie estadounidense. Apodado El Carnicero de Milwaukee, fue un asesino en serie responsable de la muerte de 17 hombres y chicos entre 1978 y 1991. Es conocido no solo por la cantidad de personas que asesinó, sino también por practicar la necrofilia y el canibalismo. Dahmer fue asesinado a golpes por otro recluso mientras cumplía condena dentro de una prisión de Wisconsin.

Architecture in Chicago (No. 10)

Bucktown is a neighborhood located in the east of the Logan Square community area in Chicago, directly north of Wicker Park, and northwest of the Loop. Bucktown gets its name from the large number of goats raised in the neighborhood during the 19th century when it was an integral part of the city's famed Polish Downtown. The original Polish term for the neighborhood was Kozie Prery (Goat Prairie). Its boundaries are Fullerton Ave. to the north, Western Avenue to the west, Bloomingdale or North Avenue to the south, and the Kennedy Expressway to the east. Bucktown's original boundaries were Fullerton Avenue, Damen Avenue (formerly Robey Street), Armitage Avenue and Western Avenue.

Bucktown is primarily residential, with a mix of older single family homes, new builds with edgy architecture, and converted industrial loft spaces. Horween Leather Company has been on North Elston Avenue in Bucktown since 1920.The neighborhood's origins are rooted in the Polish working class, which first began to settle in the area in the 1830s.A large influx of Germans began in 1848 and in 1854 led to the establishment of the town of Holstein, which was eventually annexed into Chicago in 1863. In the 1890s and 1900s, immigration from Poland, the annexation of Jefferson Township into Chicago and the completion of the Logan Square Branch of the Metropolitan Elevated Lines contributed to the rapid increase in Bucktown's population density. Three of the city's most opulent churches designed in the so-called 'Polish Cathedral style'- St. Hedwig's, the former Cathedral of All Saints and St. Mary of the Angels date from this era.

The early Polish settlers had originally designated many of Bucktown's streets with names significant to their people – Kosciusko, Sobieski, Pulaski and Leipzig (after the Battle of Leipzig). Chicago's City Council, prompted by a Bucktown-based German contingent with political clout, changed these Polish-sounding names in 1895 and 1913. In its place the new names for these thoroughfares bore a distinct Teutonic hue – Hamburg, Frankfort, Berlin and Holstein. Anti-German sentiment during World War I brought about another name-change that left today's very Anglo-Saxon sounding names: McLean, Shakespeare, Charleston, and Palmer.

Polish immigration into the area accelerated during and after World War II when as many as 150,000 Poles are estimated to have arrived in Polish Downtown between 1939 and 1959 as Displaced Persons. Like the Ukrainians in nearby Ukrainian Village, they clustered in established ethnic enclaves like this one that offered shops, restaurants, and banks where people spoke their language. Milwaukee Avenue was the anchor of the city's "Polish Corridor", a contiguous area of Polish settlement that extended from Polonia Triangle to Avondale's Polish Village. Additional population influxes into the area at this time included European Jews and Belarusians.

Latino migration to the area began in the 1960s with the arrival of Cuban, Puerto Rican, and later Mexican immigrants. Puerto Ricans in particular concentrated in the areas along Damen and Milwaukee Avenues through the 1980s after being displaced by the gentrification of Lincoln Park that started in the 1960s. The local Puerto Rican community lent heavy support for the Young Lords and other groups that participated in Harold Washington's victorious mayoral campaign. In the last quarter of the 20th century, a growing artists' community led directly to widespread gentrification, which brought in a large population of young professionals. In recent years, many trendy taverns and restaurants have opened in the neighborhood. There also have been a considerable number of "teardowns" of older housing stock, often followed by the construction of larger, upscale residential buildings.

Bucktown has a significant shopping district on Damen Avenue, extending north from North Avenue (in Wicker Park) to Webster Avenue. The neighborhood is readily accessible via the Blue Line and has multiple access points to the elevated Bloomingdale Trail, also known as the 606.

Early 20th Century - Popular History

In the early 1900’s a lot was going on in the United States. There were world wars to worry about and finding equality for everyone. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s women showcased their desire for female enfranchisement by wearing a yellow ribbon on their left breast and their male allies would wear a yellow ribbon on the lapel of their coat. In the Men’s League for Women’s Suffrage archival photo, which is part of the New York State Women’s Suffrage Exhibition Collection and holds 49 other documents, you can see the men who are allies of the women wearing the yellow ribbon on their coat lapel as they carry the banner. Theorists at the time analyzed the resurgence of the Suffrage movement of the 1910’s and how their message meant different things to different people. The image in particular that comes to mind when thinking of different perspectives of the Suffrage movement is the anti-suffrage perspective. The Women’s Suffrage Postcard demonstrates the point of view of the anti-suffrage supporters who firmly believe that voting is and should be restricted to men only. The postcard is part of the Dovie Horvitz Collection which is a collection of 1,173 images. These ideals may come from a threat to the patriarchy and to the sex gender system and the normal everyday roles of genders, resulting in this perspective of the suffrage movement that was anti women’s vote.

Uncle Sam is a prominent figure in United States culture and war propaganda. The creator of Uncle Sam is known by the name of, James Montgomery Flagg, who saw himself in the mirror and that’s how he came with the idea of Uncle Sam, the characteristics at least. The positioning and actual portrait of Uncle Sam was inspired by Alfred Leete’s recruitment poster for the military in England. In the ad, Advertisement for Liberty Bonds, Uncle Sam is used to motivate citizens to support the war effort by purchasing liberty bonds. Ironically enough, Flagg’s method of getting people to purchase bonds was by offering free portraits to anyone who bought $1,000 bonds. The ad is part of the Roman B.J. Kwasniewski Photographs Collection which is originally located at UWM Manuscript Collection.

Oripoto, zona rural, Los Naranjos, El Cigarral son algunos de los sectores que a diario reportan fallas en algunos de lis mismos .

Aunado a las fallas en los servicios públicos dependientes del estado se unen las fallas en los servicios de Internet tan importantes hoy en día , usuarios reportan fallas y extrema lentitud de los servicios de los dos mayores proveedores de Internet en el municipio.

Son los mercados solidarios una opcion más económica para realizar compras? Algunos piensan que no, estas alternativas para los consumidores se han ido encareciendo cada día más llegando incluso a superar los precios de muchos supermercados en el municipio, sin embargo aseguran que hay diferencias de precios en los mismos mercaditos populares a cielo abierto. Indican los compradores que no entienden como si un automercado tiene que pagar impuestos, electricidad, servicio de aseo, empleados e impuestos los precios en muchas ocasiones son mas económicos que en los mercaditos populares.

Chavismo financió más de USD 2.000 millones para generar electricidad en la región. Asimismo, envió USD 11.000 millones en barriles de petróleo para la generación eléctrica en Cuba, según cálculos de El Pitazo.

Today is International Nurses Day!

Here at the UWM Archives, we want to wish all nurses a fantastic International Nurses Day!  First celebrated in 1965, International Nurses Day falls on the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birthday.  The International Council of Nurses announced that this year’s theme is Nurses: A Voice to Lead - A vision for future healthcare.  We are incredibly grateful for the hard work of all the nurses this past year!

The black and white photograph featured here shows a group portrait of Milwaukee County Hospital Nurses in 1939, with handwritten labels for Bertha Saunders, Minna Newhouse and Bessie Norstrant on the photograph.

Friday Fish Fry

Seeing these lovely fishies from volume 2 of Commodore Matthew Perry’s 1856 Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan, reminds us that we haven’t gone to a fish fry in several weeks. All the fish depicted here are consumed as food, although they’d be highly unlikely to be eaten as part of Wisconsin’s slightly-quirky tradition of the Friday-night Fish Fry. Still, as we’ve learned, almost anything is possible in Wisconsin at the Friday Fish Fry table. Did Perry and his crew dine on these dainties? Maybe, maybe not, as this was their first encounter with these fish. They are, however, quite edible fried or grilled, and today they are known as (from top to bottom, with Perry’s name in parenthesis): Pacific Saury or Mackerel Pike (Scomberesox); Houndfish or Crocodile Needlefish (Belone Gigantea); Gunnel (Gunellus Dolichocogaster); Klipfish (Clinus Polyactocephalus).

So, where shall we go tonight? Well, one of the most popular fish fry establishments in Milwaukee, Fritz’s Pub in the south-side Polonia district at the corner of 20th and Oklahoma, will be shuttering its operations late next year after 40 years of being one of the city’s most notable Serbian-style eateries (of which there are several owing to Milwaukee’s considerable Balkan heritage). So, we’ll be heading there to get in a few more fish fries before they close. Fritz’s (owned by the family of one of the librarians here at the UWM Libraries) is a classic, South Side, neighborhood pub serving such home-style Serbian dishes as Burek, Chewap, Shish-ka-bob, and their ever-popular Fritzburger, a grilled 1/2-pound patty of ground veal and beef loaded with Serbian ingredients.

Their only daily seafood is shrimp, but on Fridays they serve up some delectable beer-battered haddock and cod, accompanied by cole slaw, potato wedges, and their own well-known, homemade rye bread!  Mmmmm-Mmm! Can’t wait!

Sólo un 27,9 % de los europeos NBA estará en esta Ventana

La tercera Ventana FIBA, la primera a la que pueden acudir los jugadores de la NBA, no nos dejará mucha presencia de estos. De los 61 europeos de esta Liga —teniendo en cuenta los que jugaron allí la pasada temporada— que podrían disputar las Ventanas clasificatorias para el Mundial, sólo 17 están en las listas de sus respectivas selecciones para los dos compromisos de este mes de junio. España, por ejemplo, tiene nueve jugadores en la mejor liga del mundo (los hermanos Gasol, los Hernangómez, Calderón, Ricky, Abrines, Mirotic e Ibaka), pero solo Juancho estará a las órdenes de Sergio Scariolo en los partidos de la Selección ante Eslovenia (jueves 28, 20:00) y Bielorrusia (domingo 1, 18:30).

Repasamos quiénes están y quiénes, no en el resto de selecciones.

Croacia: Bogdanovic, Saric y Zubac

Croacia, con 1-3 (solo le ha ganado un partido a Holanda), tiene difícil pasar el corte y casi imposible clasificarse para el Mundial. De los seis NBA, están tres: Bojan Bogdanovic (Pacers), Dario Saric (Sixers) e Ivica Zubac (Lakers), que ha debutado con Croacia. No están Ante Zizic (Cavaliers), Mario Hezonja (Magic) y Dragan Bender (Suns).

Francia: Nico Batum, Evan Fournier y Rudy Gobert

Francia es el país que más jugadores tiene en la NBA —Tony Parker (Spurs), Nicolas Batum (Hornets), Evan Fournier (Magic), Joffrey Lauvergne (Spurs), Rudy Gobert (Jazz), Alexis Ajinca (Pelicans), Ian Mahinmi (Wizards), Frank Ntilikina (Knicks), Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot (Sixers) y Guerschon Yabusele (Celtics)— y tres de ellos (Batum, Fournier y Gobert) estarán en esta Ventana (Bosnia y Rusia).

Lituania: Valanciunas y Sabonis

Uno de los pocos equipos que podrá contar con todo su arsenal. Kuzminskas comenzó el año en la NBA (Knicks), pero la acabó en Milán y también estará. Jonas Valanciunas (Raptors) y Domantas Sabonis (Pacers) estarán con Lituania.

Alemania: Schröder y Kleber

Dirk Nowitzki (Mavericks) dijo adiós a la selección alemana después del Europeo de 2015. De los otros cuatro jugadores de este país que pasaron el pasado curso en la NBA, sólo Dennis Schröder (Hawks) y Maxi Kleber (Mavericks) estarán en la Ventana (frente a Austria y Serbia). Daniel Theis (Celtics)y Paul Zipser (Bulls) se la pierden por lesión.

Turquía: Furkan Korkmaz y Cedi Osman

Furkan Korkmaz (14 partidos en los Sixers) y Cedi Osman (61 en los Cavaliers) llegaron esta temporada a la NBA y serán los representantes de esta Liga con Turquía. Obviamente no estará Enes Kanter (New York Knicks), perseguido por la justicia turca. Tampoco Omer Asik (Pelicans y Bulls) ni Ersan Ilyasova (Atlanta Hawks y Philadelphia Sixers).

Finlandia: Lauri Markkanen

Uno de uno. Lauri Markannen fue una de las sensaciones del pasado Eurobasket y el finlandés, tras cerrar su primera temporada con los Bulls (15,2 puntos y 7,5 rebotes), anunció las ganas que tenía de jugar con Finlandia: estará con su selección, que se mide a la República Checa y a Islandia.

Letonia: Davis Bertans

Kristaps Porzingis (Knicks) está lesionado así que el único letón disponible sí que estará con su selección en esta Ventana (Suecia y Ucrania): Davis Bertans (San Antonio).

Rusia: Timofey Mozgov

El único jugador ruso en la NBA (Brooklyn Nets) se ha apuntado a las Ventanas. En el Eurobasket de 2017, en el que Rusia perdió el bronce ante España, Timofey Mozgov fue de los mejores de su equipo: 13,3 puntos y 7,4 rebotes. En la NBA no ha tenido muchos minutos (11,6).

Serbia: Boban Marjanovic

Solo Boban Marjanovic (Minnesota Wolves) estará a las órdenes de Djordjevic en esta tercera Ventana. Milos Teodosic (LA Clippers) y Nemanja Nedovic (Minnesota Wolves) estaban en la prelista de Serbia, pero se han caído. Tampoco estarán Nikola Jokic (Denver Nuggets) y Bogdan Bogdanovic (Sacramento Kings).

Bosnia y Herzegovina: Nadie

Dos jugadores bosnios comenzaron la temporada en la NBA: Jusuf Nurkic (Blazers) y Mirza Teletovic (Bucks). Milwaukee cortó a Teletovic en marzo después de que éste negara los rumores sobre una posible retirada y Nurkic estaba en una lista preliminar, pero finalmente no ha acudido (su futuro estaba en el aire).

República Checa: Nadie

El base de los Wizards Tomas Satoransky, el único checo NBA en la actualidad, no va a estar tampoco en el 3ª Ventana. La República Checa contaba con él, pero hace unos días pidió disculpas por no ir. La razón que ha dado es que la próxima será una temporada muy importante para él y ha planificado trabajo individual todo el verano.

Georgia: Nadie

Zaza Pachulia (Warriors) anunció tras el Eurobasket de 2017 que se retiraba de la selección. Polonia no volverá a contar con él.

Grecia: Nadie

Ni Giannis Antetokounmpo (Bucks) ni Georgios Papagiannis (Kings y Blazers esta temporada) estarán con Grecia.

Israel: Nadie

Omri Casspi es el representate israelí en la NBA (Warriors, aunque lo cortaron antes del playoff), pero el alero no está en la lista. No se había perdido ningún Eurobasket desde 2009.

Italia: Nadie

Marco Belinelli (Hawks) y Danilo Gallinari (Clippers) no están en esta tercera Ventana. Italia tiene ya asegurado el pase con cuatro triunfos.

Montenegro: Nadie

Nikola Vucevic (Magic) disputó con Montenegro el pasado Eurobasket, pero el pívot no estará con su selección en esta Ventana. Montenegro tiene opciones de pasar de ronda, pero tiene muy difícil estar en el Mundial del próximo curso.

Polonia: Nadie

En 2015, después de que España los eliminara en el Eurobasket, Marcin Gortat anunció su retirada de la selección. El Martillo Polaco ha promediado esta temporada en los Wizards 8,4 puntos y 7,6 rebotes. Ha sido traspasado a los Clippers.

Suecia: Nadie

Jonas Jerebko, compañero de Ricky Rubio en los Utah Jazz, lleva sin jugar con su selección desde el Eurobasket de 2013. Tampoco estará en esta tercera Ventana.

Ucrania: Nadie

Alex Len (Phoenix Suns) debutó en la NBA en 2013 y nunca ha jugado con la absoluta. No lo hará este junio tampoco.

Gran Bretaña: Nadie

Luol Deng (Los Angeles Lakers) jugó por última vez en los Juegos de Londres (2012) y no estará con Gran Bretaña. OG Anunoby (primera temporada en los Raptors), tampoco.
