I have a lot of favorite books across various genres!! But here are just a few that popped into my head first as I was looking around my bookshelves. <3

Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel by Virginia Lee Burton

I grew up watching the animated HBO musical adaptation and I've loved the story ever since. As a testament to how much I think about Mike Mulligan and Mary Anne, I wrote a whole post about this immortal man and his magic steed on another blog if you're curious. XD

2. Kitchen Princess by Natsumi Ando and Miyuki Kobayashi

Of course it would be remiss of me not to mention Kitchen Princess~ Thank you again for recommending this manga to me in high school!

This story has it all - romance, mystery, found family, and friendship all driven by a protagonist whose mission in life is to make people smile with her food! It's so wholesome and sweet even when it tries to make me cry, and every time I revisit it I'm filled with the same warm feelings as I was the first time I read it. Honestly, I attribute my affection for cooking/gourmet based media (bonus points if it incorporates recipes into its format) to the impact Kitchen Princess left on me.

3. The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton

This one is a coming-of-age story about a couple of working-class kids in 1960's Tulsa, Oklahoma who get jumped by a gang of upper-class kids and are left to process and deal with the ramifications of this long-standing rivalry. There is so much tenderness and vulnerability in this book, and the way these kids and their friends are immediately do or die for each other through it all has me weak.

By this point, it's no secret that I'm a sucker for found families and let me tell you the found family bond this group of boys cultivated to survive in a world that would just as easily leave them behind got to me. The consequences of the socioeconomic divide are cruel, but they have each other and it softens my heart through the tragedy every time.

4. Mimus by Lilli Thal

I blame this one for igniting my interest in jesters. There's something about a historical novel following a young prince who was taken prisoner by a rival king and forced to become a jester-in-training in said rival's court that really gripped me. I think it was the craftiness and subtle tenderness from Mimus that really endeared me to the story.

I'm not sure if this mockingbird is sick or injured or something, it seems very very fat compared to all the other ones, it looked like it was hopping around on one leg, and it was flying kinda awkwardly...

Maybe they're just getting fat for winter? I don't know what mockingbirds do, lol..
