The end of the concrete jetty jutting out into the sea. A massive encrustation of oysters were to be seen on one of the supporting concrete pillars, that were otherwise devoid of all life.

today's sketch is of Mindanao Lorikeets (Saudareos johnstoniae)! I love their mischievous look. :)
They're native to the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. Only about 1500 of them are left in the wild because of habitat loss and trapping for the pet trade.
Neocolor oil wax pastels and marker, 04/03/2023.
here is a video of them in the wild

Ear Ornament. Mindanao, Philippines. 14th-15th Century (or earlier).
Gold
from the Metropolitan Museum of Art
Alright, one more cool jewelry piece from the Philippines! This one in particular caught my eye, because of the design and the region it is from.
The Philippines can be divided into three sections: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The capital city, Manila, is located in Luzon. Now, while it is the political, economic, and cultural center-- the actual culture of the people is incredibly nebulous and complicated than at first glance.
Mindanao is a clear example of why that is. While the Philippines is 'predominantly Catholic', Mindanao is home to a predominantly Muslim majority that is often overlooked. This is an unfortunate shame, especially because Muslims in the islands have existed prior to the Spanish colonial era and have a rich cultures of their own.

Sigaw, Surigao
The evenings that previously echoed with the most riotous sounds have now faded into an unexpected serene, subdued by the weight of the truth that each human being carries. This reality, braided with strands of experience, joy, and sadness, is a common thread that connects all of mankind, regardless of our differences. The contrast between black and white, in its deep simplicity, acts as a global language, communicating stories of grief and joy, love and loss, without the need for complicated words. In the end, the loudest nights may have died away, but their silence invites us to listen to the whispers of our shared humanity. For it is only in the quiet times that the genuine cadence of life may be heard, reminding us that in the grand theater of existence, the most powerful performance is the one where we live with intention, passion, and the resolute decision to truly be alive.

Pag-asa, the famed Philippine eagle, at four days old in 1992 (left) and his daughter, Mabuhay, at five days old in 2013 (right).
Both eagles were born into captivity in Davao City, Mindanao under the care of the Philippine Eagle Foundation. The Philippine eagle is a critically endangered species of eagle endemic to the Philippines with an estimated only 400 breeding pairs left in the wild. Multiple industries leading to the deforestation and destruction of the environment such as large-scale mining and logging have persisted in Mindanao for decades, affecting not only the ancestral lands of the people living in such areas but also its native animals.
In 2022, the Philippines was recognized as “still” being the deadliest country in Asia for environmentalists and land activists.
