Makoto was present from the launch of BBDW as a 3⭐ character. While Noel and Tsubaki each received three different playable units in the game, Makoto's curse from the C-Series remained. By the time the game shut down, she still hadn't received any alts, or even her own 5⭐ Grimoire. Though, to be fair, the game didn't even last a full year. I wonder if she would have finally gotten her chance to shine if it had continued...
On the other hand, Makoto was one of the lucky characters who had all of her costumes made playable before the shut down! We'll be taking a look at them now. If you're interested, you can also see them in action through the links below.
[Costume I Gameplay] | [Costume II Gameplay] | [Costume III Gameplay]
When Makoto was released with the launch of the game, the only costume available was the orange battle outfit we see her wear in C-Series; it was her base outfit, despite being listed in the files as her third art/costume.
Tumblr media
This seems to be Makoto's standard combat outfit. In her introductory animations for the C-Series, we see her change into this outfit from her NOL uniform and from her own matching overcoat. I was surprised and a little upset we never got a playable costume for the coat itself, though ultimately I do really like the outfits we got.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her first two costumes were later released during the pre-shut down commemorative celebrations. This art depicts her in her NOL Intelligence Department Uniform, first without the overcoat, then with it on.
The costume with the coat, found in the files under 0016001, has been seen several times before. Above you can see it in her intro animation, but we also see it in some of her story introductions, such as her appearances in Alter Memory, her meeting with Noel in the Continuum Shift light novel, and the scene were she meets up with Tager in the museum in Continuum Shift.
Tumblr media
Speaking of the museum as a locale, it also features as the background for her card art here! Her final ascension art instead seems to depict her Astral Heat.
Her 0016000 costume, the NOL Intelligence uniform without the coat, is one we've rarely seen that I was very excited to have playable! Honestly, it was probably my favorite costume in BBDW.
It was introduced to us all the way back in 2015, in a piece Mori drew for Comiket. The outfit would later be featured in BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma Extend, which is where most people, including myself, saw it first. To my knowledge, it hasn't made another canon appearance since then, until Dark War!

so that diamond ‘thoughts abt your character’ thing. I enjoy writing the clown man so every KC I feel I have decent enough grasp on gets a hot take.
we are going with Knave as a companion bc that's the easiest option
I'm so sorry if you did not want to hear from him, some of his opinions are real garbage @dujour13 @commander-lariel @turbulentpumpkin43 @silversiren1101 @lairiend @angrygoatwoman @dmagedgoods @offsidekineticist @vulpineix @desnas @cassynite @spyridonya @undyingembers
Siavash
He is disgustingly sweet. And you think to yourself 'I can be a responsible adult and cut my sugar intake' but then you see that cookie box on the table and what are you supposed to do? Not take one? Or two? Or a dozen? I hate him. He is fun.
Lariel
She just radiates fear seemingly unprompted? Someone should get that fixed. For the sake of the crusade or something. Don't look at me, I don't know how nor am I inclined to. If the decision was up to me I would release the storm inside her to see what happens.
Zrise
He is so sour! And angry! Trying to get respect by being the meanest dog in the neighbourhood. But his bite matches his bark so it's all fine. And hey, I'm an honest fellow of honest pleasures so he can bite me any time he wants.
Ariadne
She is a hoot! Not many things in this world more exciting than a good explosion. And she provides those in spades. Surprisingly she also seems to like me? The other shoe will drop eventually I'm sure but for now I can just enjoy what we have.
Mino
I know she has chaos at her core, you can see it leak sometimes and it's glorious. But instead of indulging in it, it's like she's made an oath to try to be boring at all costs. Do you think it's Regill's influence? Can boring rub off on another person? What a terrifying thought.
Agria
This lady is on fire! Metaphorically I mean, I think she may end up burning herself, also metaphorically. But I have to admit I do enjoy watching the flames go higher (metaphorically and literally) so I'm here for it. Look at her go!
Oleander
Don't tell him this, I don't want him to start thinking I'm a possible convert but if I reeeeeeeally had to choose a god to worship it would be Lamashtu. I like to think we monster types have an understanding. Even when he is being all nice like a freak.
Salvadore
I feel like I'm supposed to hate him and I kinda do. Angel man with a stick up his ass. But then he does something unexpected and it's like: woah! Where did that come from? I'm begging you to show me more. I'm at the edge of my seat.
Theoven
Such a funny little guy! Like a cart on the path to a disaster no matter which track he picks. Honestly that's plenty enjoyable. And he has so much emotion in him, he should let loose more often! I can hardly believe he is related to Regill of all people.
Luthais
What a wet blanket of a person. Could you give us a single emotion? No? Okaaaaay I can drag something out of you but I don't think you will like it! Seriously, he is a piece of work. I get that he is doomed by the narrative but he could at least try to be funny about it.
Taro
Have you ever met someone who looks at a wild beast and thinks they can turn it into a friendly critter? I think that's how they look at me and it's extremely funny. But I can play along for a little while, why not. Watch me be the freakiest little azata.
Sparrow
She is like a box locked in a box locked in a box locked… You get the idea. I don't know what's at her core and at this point I'm not sure it's worth the effort. I'm still gonna try to get her riled up whenever possible. What else is there to do?
Kadira
It's comforting to see someone who got fucked up by Areelu just as bad. I think she should get angrier about it but hey. Good for her for having a semblance of emotional stability. Or maybe it's just an act? It would be fun to see her spiral. I mean that affectionately.
Lenarius/Leonosa
Not only is he all prim and proper but he also does not get annoyed easily. I don't know what I'm supposed to do with her! I guess I have to try harder? Really backing me into a corner here. Sigh. Maybe I should just kick back and take it easy.

Kadokawa Games has announced Root Film, the next entry in its mystery adventure series for PlayStation 4 and Switch. It will launch this spring in Japan for 6,800 yen.
Here are the details:
■ About Root Film
In Root Film, the voice actor idol unit i☆Ris sings the theme song and play the roles of the main characters, while ladies’ man voice actor Wataru Komada plays the role of the male protagonist. Additionally, the game is produced by Yoshimi Yasuda, who launched the Kadokawa Games mystery adventure series; written and directed by Hifumi Kouno, who has a reputation for working on adventure games; and features character design by Taro Mino, who also worked on the previous game Root Letter. Look forward to a new mystery title set in Shimane told by two protagonists, Rintarou Yagumo and Riho.
Tumblr media
■ Story: Murderous Intent Hidden in 29.97 Frames
Spirited young filmmaker Rintarou Yagumo is involved in a new TV project—a mystery drama production set in Shimane that also served as tourism promotion for the prefecture. It has been 10 years since the original pilot was shot, and while the project was discontinued for unknown reasons, plans for a revival seems to be in place. One of the characteristics of this project is that it is a competition between three filmmakers, and each filmmaker shoots using a different actress as the protagonist. Yagumo is excited to learn that the other two filmmakers are famous directors. Before long, Yagumo and the staff members head off to go pre-location scouting, but a murder occurs at their destination…
■ Characters
Rintarou Yagumo (voiced by Wataru Komada)
An up-and-coming young filmmaker.
Tumblr media
Rintarou Yagumo is a poor filmmaker with a small, personal office. While he manages to make a living by occasionally making small promotional videos and sham psychic DVDs, he is not satisfied with his current situation and is always trying to improve himself. He recently won awards at the “6-Minute Film Festival,” “Asia Movie Competition,” and so on, and is garnering attention as an up-and-coming filmmaker.
Riho (voiced by Himika Akaneya)
The other protagonist.
Tumblr media
The other protagonist, who is cheerful and often laughing. She was scouted in high school and transferred to another high school in Tokyo. She studied acting alongside her school studies and made her debut at 17 years-old. While it was a sober debut due to the fact that she signed with a small office, she is gradually gaining value within the industry for her talent as an actor.
Aine Magari (voiced by Yuu Serizawa)
The caring assistant.
Tumblr media
A foul-mouthed assistant who works for Yagumo Pictures. She is extremely skilled in the use of editing software and equipment. While she has a bad attitude and the air of a former delinquent, she is a good girl at heart. She takes notice of the smaller details and often looks after Yagumo.
Hitoha Amakata (voiced by Kubota Miyu)
A small office idol.
Tumblr media
An idol signed with a small office. She is one of the three actors chosen as the leads for the Shimane mystery drama project. Yagumo chooses her as a partner and together they travel around Shimane’s various locations.
Kyouichi Kanade (voiced by Azuki Shibuya)
The super beautiful cameraman.
Tumblr media
A cameraman who often hangs out with Yagumo. While he may still be learning, he has courage and cameraman will-power, and since cameramen tend to ask for a lot of money, he is a saving grace for the poor Yagumo. He is a quiet and takes pride in his work. He always comes off as somewhat sleepy.
Tomie Ao (voiced by Yuuki Wakai)
Riho’s friend.
Tumblr media
Riho’s friend from high shcool and a freshman at Shimane University. She is studying the work of Yakumo Koizumi. She moved to Shimane during high school. She has a deep love for her father, and can sometimes be strongly opinionated. She is cute, but does not have much of a fashion sense.
Ayane Kotoshiro (voiced by Saki Yamakita)
A friendly and strong-willed girl.
Tumblr media
A girl from the esteemed Kotoshiro family of Shimane. She is simple-minded and friendly, but can also be strong-willed and selfish. She is dating Kazuya Makida, who works for her, and even thinks she wants to get married.
■ Game System
One of the defining systems of Root Film is “Synesthesia Mode.” During conversation, words that have been singled out as “words that should not be forgotten” in your subconscious will appear on screen. The keywords you acquire can be used as part of your hand in “Max Mode.”
Max Mode is a debate between the protagonist and other characters in the game, which occurs in the resolution chapters you switch over to as you progress through the game. While this mode is carried over from Root Letter, it has the appearance of a fighting game and the system has been completed renewed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another characteristic of Root Film is the stylish user interface and text design themed around film work under the supervision of Hifumi Kouno.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
■ First-Print Purchase Bonus DVD: “i☆Ris x Root Film Treasured Footage Collection”
First-print copies of Root Film will include a “i☆Ris x Root Film Treasured Footage Collection,” a bonus DVD of the i☆Ris concert at Kadokawa Games Grand Festival 2019 and a behind-the-scenes look at the studio recording of the Root Film theme song.
Tumblr media
■ Root Film Theme Song: “Utakata no Hikari”
i☆Ris, who play the roles of the main characters in Root Film, are also the singers of the game’s original theme song. The theme song “Utakata no Hikari,” which was first unveiled at Kadokawa Games Grand Festival 2019, is a mature ballad with an air of suspense. Please look forward to a mature i☆Ris that is not often seen.
Tumblr media
■ Root Film Premiere Event
On March 27, 2020, a Root Film Premiere Event will be held in Kaguraza, Tokyo ahead of the game’s spring 2020 release. Consumers who pre-order Root Film will be invited to attend by lottery. Both Yuu Serizawa and Kubota Miyu will appear.

Last year, Kadokawa games released Root Letter on the Vita and PS4 together with PQube. This game is the first entry in the Kadokawa Game Mystery series. It mixes a visual novel with an adventure game and uses real world locations as a background. I’ve been playing the game this past month, and though I’m not finished yet, it’s time to pen down my review of Root Letter.
The story of Aya
First of all, what’s the game about? You are cast in the role of Takayuki, a young man that is set to leave for another city to pursue a career. While tidying his room, Takayuki re-discovers letters from his old pen pal, Aya. For some reason one is unopened, and chillingly reads, “I killed someone. I must atone for my sins.” Where most people might let it go and go on to their new life, Takayuki takes a detour to visit Aya’s home town of Matsue. Arriving at the address he discovers that Aya’s house burnt down 15 years prior. And too make matters worse, everyone claims that Aya Fumino died 25 years ago. The mystery is born.
Wanting answers, Takayuki must look to the only clue he has – the information written in Aya’s letters. Every chapter shows you the letter the girl wrote, talking about daily things and mentioning  her 7 favourite classmates. She only mentions their nicknames Four-Eyes, Monkey, Fatty, Bitch, Snappy, Shorty, and Bestie. Of course, people change a lot in 15 years, and with everyone denying that they had an 8th school-friend called Aya, Takayuki has a lot of digging to do.
Soaking up Japanese culture
I’ve read that the game should please people who like Ace Attorney and Danganronpa games. I’ve never played Danganronpa, and only a minimal amount of Ace Attorney, so I can’t really testify to that, but it should give you a feel for what Root Letter is about. It’s distinctly Japanese, no question there. The surroundings, the names of places and people, the food that is being served. Nothing got changed to Western culture, which is great. It makes playing the game feel like you’re taking a short holiday.
#gallery-0-9 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-9 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-9 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-9 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
The story takes place in Matsue, Kadokawa Games created this game while working closely with Shimane prefecture officials. While the story is being told and the game is played, you get to know a lot about the city of Matsue. As you move across the map you can use a guidebook, telling you little tidbits of touristy information about the sights in Matsue. They’ve build the surroundings like in the real town, as these pictures of Matsue Kyomise Shopping District clearly show.
The mascot for the prefecture Simane, Shimanekko, appears in a non-obtrusive way throughout the game. He welcomes you at the station, is depicted on the S.S. Swan and in other places. It’s a clever way to make the game instantly recognisable, like Kunamon is synonymous for Danganronpa games, and Funassyi appears in Tamagotchi games. Both are mascots too for Japanese prefectures!
So while you are soaking up Japanese culture and get to know the sights, you still have fun playing the game. They manage to educate you in a subtle way, it just happens to be part of the overall design of the game.
#gallery-0-10 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-10 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-10 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-10 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
” Objection!”  kind of interrogation
The gameplay is pretty straightforward. After reading the girls’  letter, you visit new places, chat with the locals and check around for clues. When you gained enough information on someone you get to confront one of the nicknamed classmates and call them out on their lies. An Investigation sequence is started, of the Objection kind! As I’m never very good at these kind of interrogations I was glad that the game guides me along and patiently lets me do it over if I get it wrong. Could be though that this is too easy for veterans at mystery games.
It’s not just the questions that you have to carefully choose, the reaction needed to draw the right response out has to be chosen too. You have to make sure you click at the right time when the reaction meter rises. It builds from stay silent to blowing your top, and every stage in between.
You can move freely between locations, talk to people when and if you want and work things out together with Takayuki. Using the guidebook and the overall map of Matsue made me feel very involved. Still, you can’t do the game in another sequence, the game gently guides you to where it wants to go next. And if you’re unsure, there’s always the Think button to help you out.
Five different routes
When you read Aya’s letters, the responding letter Takayuki sent is shown too. It’s your job to choose one of the possible answers, and each will steer you into a direction in the game. This makes for five routes that head off in extremely different directions. Some more mundane, some more fantastic, as throughout the game you’ll see glimpses of possible ghosts or even aliens.
I haven’t been that far yet, but I’ve read that doing the various routes helps you to uncover small details that help you build the bigger picture of everything that happened.
Conclusion
The game looks good with artwork from Love Plus character designer Mino Taro. The combination of visual novel and mystery reminds me of Hotel Dusk, which is a good thing. The connection to real life Matsue and all the Japanese culture I can soak up through the game makes it even more fun for me. The mystery is still unraveling for me, but the characters feel real and believable for me, which is important for me to enjoy a game. The game manages to set an atmosphere that I like, although I do realise this game might not be for everyone. But isn’t that the same for every game out there?
I do want to add that the original price of EUR 39,95 would have been too much for the game. I got the game at the January sales at EUR 19,95 which is a perfect price for it. There are some typos in the texts, and its not a very long game. Overall though, I think it’s a good game.
Review Root Letter Last year, Kadokawa games released Root Letter on the Vita and PS4 together with PQube. This game is the first entry in the Kadokawa Game Mystery series.
