I remember, a while back, we were facing the possibility of evacuation because of fires (Northern California, it comes with the territory.) We have a house, my brother’s house, in the next town over with two bedrooms that we could crash at if that were to happen.

We were talking about that over lunch and I was thinking about that possibility. Two bedrooms, one would obviously go to my brother because it’s his house, the other would go to my parents because they could sleep together, which meant I’d have to sleep on an air mattress in the living room.

Now, me, I’m an introvert, I de-stress by being alone, and I’d be the only one without privacy in an already stressful situation. Thinking about living like that for weeks would be hell for me.

And I accidently let slip the words “It’ll be hell” from my lips. That turned out to be a big mistake.

My dad immediately snaps at me. “Would you prefer to stay at a shelter? Feel lucky we even GOT a house to go to! You’ve never known true suffering!”

He was right, but he wasn’t wrong either.

It was the single most hurtful thing he ever said to me. I don’t think he intended it to hurt so much. He didn’t know that the only reason I can’t move past trauma is because I’ve been doubting my entire life whether I even deserve to call it trauma. “Other people have it worse, so I don’t deserve to be sad, and if I can’t be happy, then I don’t deserve that happiness.”

He didn’t know all that, and he only said it because he preferred to look at the bright side of things. That’s how he copes with tragedies. I wonder if that attitude is how I wound up like this. I dunno. I’m not the right person to say either way.

There’s a time and place for seeing the bright side of things, but stating that things sucks is just as important sometimes

There are times when positivity is more toxic than negativity.

I remember chocking this up to cultural differences but, now this has kind of made me realize how important ascension is to Afterans.

For humans, our memories, our experiences, those allow us to grow and change.

The Afterans can’t grow and change. It’s why their village is constantly in danger. It’s why they keep lighting the torch every day, it’s why they keep making the same mistakes. They CAN’T grow. The only way to do that is to give themselves up and become something else.
