Movie Review | Agneepath (Anand, 1990)
Tumblr media
This review contains mild spoilers.
Having only seen this in pan-and-scan versions previously, I was struck on this rewatch by how damn good the movie looks. Every surface seems to shimmer, perfectly catching the perpetual magic hour lighting. Every frame feels huge. We don't just look at things, we look at them throw imposing low angles, imposing crane shots, and imposing low angles that turn into imposing crane shots and vice versa. Interiors are captured with the full weight of the deep focus cinematography and smoky blue lighting. Characters wear flashy suits and hide behind designer sunglasses. Imagine an entire movie shot like the opening scenes of Beverly Hills Cop II and you get the idea.
This flashy style makes more sense when you realize the movie uses as its primary inspiration the plot of Scarface, but making it distinctly Indian. The film is less concerned with anti-capitalist satire (for one thing, it's not clear what business the protagonist is in - he's against drugs and presumably against prostitution, leaving the only criminal activities we see him commit to be the murder of other criminals) and more concerned with familial bonds, and perhaps implicitly, nationalist fervour. The Sosa stand-in villain conducts his business from the Mauritius, happy to exploit his homeland from abroad, and has in his employ a white man, whom the hero derides for being a foreigner. This was made in the years before India underwent economic liberalization, and there's a sense of a country that's crumbling, especially when the high gloss visual style is directed towards the decaying slums the movie periodically detours into.
That sense of decay also manifests in the lead performance by Amitabh Bachchan, whose presence has always felt bigger than the movies and here seems to be a symbol as much as an actor. Bachchan is past his Angry Young Man prime from the '70s and before his patriarch phase starting in the 2000s, and his decision to play his character as a grotesque (not unlike Al Pacino in this movie's inspiration, replete with extremely distinct speaking voice) feels like the uglier dimensions of his persona corroding, warping his formidable star power into something more monstrous. The movie doesn't want us to dislike him too much. There's the no drugs policy, the fact that he's shown to help the community and is in fact so popular that when he ends up in the hospital, the locals riot so they can donate blood (despite the hospital being well stocked). But the fiery quality of his performance has a way of burning through the aesthetic trappings of the movie around him and lingering beyond the confines of the narrative. It's one of his best performances, and one of his weirdest. (Interesting, the villain is played by Danny Denzongpa, who was a friend of Bachchan's wife but avoided appearing alongside him earlier for fear of being outshined. I'd say he acquits himself well here, playing his role with sinister understatement. The super cool sunglasses help, of course.)
The movie does not have the cleanest of narratives (the stuff involving Mithun Chakraborthy in village idiot mode feel at odds with the overall tone) and clearly doesn't care about the musical numbers (one of them has Chakraborthy, best known for Disco Dancer, dancing in a disco but not exactly disco dancing, despite what the lyrics claim). But the constant presence of violence (this is quite a bit bloodier than the average Bollywood movie from this era) and the gangster story arc give this both a sense of sprawl and forward momentum. And there's an undeniably elemental power to the imagery, the hero being driven to revenge as blood drips from his father's face onto his own, the sea of bodies during the festival when the hero is ambushed, and the village going up in flames like the fires of hell during the climactic assault on the villain's mansion.

Kashmir Files
The Kashmir files is an emotionally triggering, docudrama that tracks the tragic exodus of Kashmiri pandits from the state of Jammu & Kashmir, their homeland in the 1980s. The writer and director of the film Vivek Agnihotri attempt to provide an alternate view and narrative about the long-festering Kashmir issue. The film is based on testimonies of the people scarred for generations by the insurgency in the state. The Director presents the unfortunate exodus as a full-scale genocide of Kashmiri Pandits akin to the Jew holocaust and the massacre of partition at the time of India’s independence. It is the Director’s grouse that the previous governments and left-leaning intellectual lobby deliberately kept away the genocide away from the public on account of political, vested interests.
The film contains some compelling performances delivered by  Anupam Kher(AK), Pallavi Joshi(PJ), Darshan Kumar (DK), Mithun Chakraborthy (MC) and others. Here, Krishna (DK) a Pandit and student of a JNU kind of university have been tutored by the leftist liberal teacher Radhika (PJ) into believing that secessionist movement like freedom of India. It is only when he visits the valley upon the death of his grandfather, Pushkar Nath (AK) that he is revealed the ‘real’ story of religious terrorism in Kashmir and the sufferings of the Pandits, who were left to die at the hands of the Kashmiri terrorists by the state and central governments.
Based on documented reports, the film shows the brutality faced by Pandits because of their religion.  The camera work is excellent and successfully captures the dark brooding shades of the troubled valley in graphic detail. Agnihotri seems to have looked at the past from the prism of present circumstances. Vivek Agnihotri may be accused of opening old wounds. He gets the Kashmir militancy and partisan politics to the forefront. Reopening old wounds may not offer a solution but then healing can only happen once the trauma is accepted.

Three Must Watch Indian Crime Movies
With most motion pictures talking about wrongdoing in India in the late eighties and nineties, one recollects the wrongdoing escapades motion pictures in Bollywood. Tragically, there are very few wrongdoing escapade films, and the greater part of the wrongdoing driven motion pictures that exist talked increasingly about the passionate disturbance of the lawbreaker and how they came to turn into a crook. You see debauchery is as yet an outside viewpoint to Bollywood. In any case, this doesn't imply that are no wrongdoing driven motion pictures in Bollywood. Here is a rundown of the main three wrongdoing driven motion pictures, which fundamentally changed the manner in which the world took a gander at Bollywood motion pictures.
Parinda: https://putlocker-online.com/golden-collection/popcornflix This film is obviously the one that propelled and re-propelled the vocations of in any event three entertainers, Nana Patekar, Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff. Nana Patekar was a lesser known on-screen character around then, however yet had demonstrated that he had the acting cleaves to take away the job of a handily maddened wear who was frightened of fire. Anil Kapoor required a jolt to support his profession that was going to be sandwiched between sweetheart kid and senior sibling. Jackie Shroff required something to demonstrate individuals that Subhash Ghai had really settled on the correct choice propelling him as the large hearted rascal and Nana Patekar needed to positively shape standard film.
Tumblr media
The film is one of the most smoothly made Bollywood motion pictures, and you won't locate the standard routine daily schedule, however will rather invite the melodies and moves when they come - in light of the fact that you are so overpowered by the happenings onscreen.
Scenes to Note: Nana Patekar's fit when he sees fire and the peak where Jackie Shroff slaughters him by fundamentally securing him up a room brimming with fire. Another scene of note is the place their companion, a cop is taken shots at the Kabootar Khana, a spot where pigeons are taken care of. Before you state that it is roused from Quentin Tarantino, we folks didn't have any acquaintance with him in those days.
Dayavan:
Dayavan is one of those clique works of art that had everything in it. The activity, the feeling, the tenderness of an individual who has been naturally introduced to the universe of wrongdoing and capitulates to it, everything is depicted on screen by probably the best on-screen character this side of the Arabian Sea, Kamal Hassan. The film has been revamped and made in a few dialects all over India, and is perhaps the best screenplays and storylines in current film.
Scenes to Note: Scene where Dayavan first kills a cop. Scene where his significant other tumbles down from the overhang and the end succession where Dayavan is killed by the distraught child of the cop he had killed as a youngster.
Agneepath:
While Parinda and Dayavan were basic and clique hits in their time, Agneepath is something that I despite everything recalled today, with numerous individuals remembering the exchange. This film saw numerous things occurring - it was another supporter shot to Amitabh Bachchan's vocation, individuals concurring that Mithun Chakraborthy can act, and essentially gave Bollywood the permit to make motion pictures on the wrongdoing pervaded universe of that time. The film is said to have diminished down when it was first propelled, and it was just later that individuals comprehended what the film was about.
These are the three motion pictures that had the guts to challenge the mindset in those days, and many would concur that motion pictures like Johnny Gaddar, Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai and even Shootout at Lokhandwala wouldn't have been conceivable if these films had not made the main imprint.
