If Loki "retires" to live with 50+ cats/dragons, where do you think he would reside?
- Thor’s neighbour house in New Asgard. He’s been there this whole time. He’s the rogue cat person of the village. Thor just never noticed that his neighbour has 50+ cats/dragons which he randomly lets roam around the Asgardian settlement. “Loki loved dragons. Where’d that dragon come from?” Thor asks one day, and Valkyrie’s only response is a ‘are you kidding me?’ look because Loki just walked past holding a dragon and he somehow missed Loki but noted the dragon. Loki’s cats regularly invade Thor’s house. He figures Valkyrie let cats loose on the village for rodent-control.
- A cottage-like house. Maybe in the middle of a city like New York where it wouldn’t fit in? Lots of green plants and the place looks overrun with it but that’s just because it’s a solidly cottage-core aesthetic. The interior of the house is stacked with hardcover books in places they probably shouldn’t be. The cats and dragons like to climb and perch themselves on these stacks. The place isn’t large but it’s the coziest thing imaginable and there’s always hot chocolate around. The front and back yards both have gardens hidden in their vine-covered bushy overgrowths.
- trashy apartment that magically materializes wherever he wants it to be. there is no reason the apartment needs to be filled with this junk. surprisingly enough nothing in the place is rotting, it’s just a mess. good for the cats and dragons. the apartment may or may not be his pocket dimension. it’s actually really unclear. where did all this random junk come from? it doesn’t matter. the tv has netflix on all the time and loki sleeps on the couch covered in pets. which is lovely some days. disastrous on others.
- Carol Monica Nick Maria and Talos are hanging around space helping with space wars. Loki’s there too and is the only one that doesn’t get a roommate because he shares his with 50 or so cats and dragons. Well, sometimes Carol stays over, but it’s usually because the dragons like playing with her energy fists and think she’s part dragon too. Cats and dragons both stick to her when she stays because her temperature is slightly above Loki’s and she’s warmer. Loki complains about ‘favouritism’ and them being ‘traitors’ in good humour. The cats and dragons all follow Talos around in a line like ducks. The cats think he’s a regular lizard and keep trying to bite him. The dragons think he’s a larger mother dragon. He doesn’t always notice that Goose is among the cats and dragons and screeches every single time he does.
- Modern apartment. Think: Tony’s Avenger Tower interor designs. Futuristic and cut with overly-simple design and mostly greyscale palette. Floor 22 where no mosquitos or flies dare come. The place has tiles and slabs of metal and the only non-modern thing are the crazy amounts of cats and dragons always hanging around preventing the place from getting too cold. Despite the sleek furniture, everything is comfortable, and there’s a fire-screen electric heater. There’s always calming music playing softly. Or workout music. Sometimes a mix. If he’s in the mood some rock will come on. It’s an endless playlist of songs Loki enjoys so despite how detached the place should look it’s irrefutably alive.

Let’s talk about upcoming books!
It’s hard to believe the year is nearly over, but it’s equally hard to believe that it’s somehow still 2020  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Either way, the new year means at least one good thing- cool new books!
Click the read more for a little on each and why I’m excited! And have a great new year! 💓🎉
The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey is Gailey’s third full-length novel, and their second Adult novel. It’s an SFF story about a woman whose husband is cheating on her… with a clone of herself… which he made by stealing her research. The layers of betrayal! Obviously her and the clone have to kill him, what other choice do they have? I’m super excited for another one of Gailey’s fun, complex characters and the concept alone sounds so, so cool.
The Valley and the Flood by Rebecca Mahoney I’ve already had the pleasure over reading and I am PUMPED to get other people to read it! This is a magical realism story about grief and baggage mixed with a southern (western?) gothic vibe with the town in the desert full of otherwordly “neighbors”. This is a beautiful story of PTSD and healing and as well as a lushly magic one.
The Mirror Season by Anna-Marie McLemore is another one I’ve already been lucky enough to get an advanced copy of. This is a magical realism story about the trauma of two characters’ unfortunately closely connected sexual assault. This one is heavy, and if you’re sensitive to stories involving rape and/or blackmail you may want to avoid it, but it’s well written and honestly an excellent story of healing and reflection.
Lycanthropy & Other Chronic Illnesses by Kristen O’Neal I…. have also already read! Sorry- I am just a very lucky reader of books! This is a really modern online friendship based story of a girl and her community of people with chronic illnesses, like the one that forced her to come back home from college. But it turns out her best friend’s chronic illness is a little… weird. I love the humor in this book, I love the characters, I love the representation of these illnesses and the online communities they form, and I honestly think that anyone who 1) like werewolves and 2) is still on tumblr will love this book.
Blade of Secrets by Tricia Levenseller combines three of my favorite things- bladesmiths, magical quests, and the author of The Shadows Between Us. A magical bladesmith takes a commission from someone far more dangerous than she knows, and winds up with an uber powerful sword able to steal secrets, on the run, and with some surprising friends. I can’t think of anything I don’t like from that, and I know I already love Levenseller’s characters, so!
Mister Impossible by Maggie Stiefvater has… that title, but is also the sequel to Call Down the Hawk, Stiefvater’s Ronan Lynch centric TRC spin off. CDTH was incredible and ended with a massive cliff hanger, so I’m chompin at the bit for this book. More magical dreams! More disembodied voices! More murder and art theft and Declan Lynch failing at pretending not to be weird af!
May the Best Man Win by ZR Ellor has the potential to make me cry right from the get go. This is a MLM trans lovers-to-enemies-to-friends-to-lovers story and my God I’m vibrating. Basically it’s a battle for prom king between exes who had a messy break up because one of them ended their relationship in order to come out & transition. The cover is so cute and I’m ready for this to be fluffy and fun.
One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston is McQuistion’s sophomore novel after Red, White & Royal Blue, so… obviously? This one is sapphic and involves falling for someone who is literally in the past. I trust McQuiston so much I’d need this book immediately even if the concept didn’t sound amazing, but I’m feeling blessed that it does!
Violet Ghosts by Leah Thomas is about being best friends with (and crushing on) a ghost while also coming out to yourself as trans. As an enby who likes ghost books- may I just say trans rights? This book also involved parental abuse, so beware if you find that distressing or triggering!
Blood Like Magic by Liselle Sambury not only has a stunning cover and a main character who looks like she means serious business, but it’s a dark urabn fantasy about witches. The main character fails her ritual to come into her magic, she’s forced to kill her true love or strip her whole blood line. Ah, I love difficult choices, gray morality, and magic, so I’m already in love with this.
The Box in the Woods by Maureen Johnson I’m astounded and super excited to know is going to exist at all. I loved the Truly, Devious trilogy, and while this isn’t exactly a part of that it is the same main character and it is still a mystery about an unsolved murder! Plus, I love summer camps, so a summer camp murder mystery makes me happy.
Gearbreakers by Zoe Hana Mikuta is a sappic enemies-to-lovers about two girls on opposite sides of a war fought by giant Windups. This is a cyberpunk book of spies and pilots and gay love, and it’s also the first in a series!
Any Way the Wind Blows by Rainbow Rowell is the third and (most likely) final book of the Simon Snow series and it’s gonna be GOOD. My only wish is for it to be about 500 pages longer because I want a full out door stopper of tying up loose ends.
The River Has Teeth by Erica Waters is the second book by the Ghost Wood Song author- which was on my most anticipated list for 2020 last year! That one was creepy and folky and queer, and this one looks to be the same. This one has a sister disappear and some strong magic to find out what happened to her, and if their mother was the one who did it.
Mark of the Wicked by Georgia Bowers is a dark fantasy about a girl who comes into her powers but has some different ideas about how she should be using them. I love morally gray or just plain dark main characters, so I’m ready to jump right on this one. This one also involves memory loss/blacking out and being framed, which always adds a cool mysterious layer!
Among Thieves by M.J. Kuhn involves queer, selfish thieves forced to band together. I have a soft spot for characters who are really flawed and don’t want to work together (especially if it leads into found family!) and this also has a slow burn sapphic relationship and a lot of possible betrayal in it, so I’ll probably go crazy from reading it.
Beyond the Ruby Veil #2 by Mara Fitzgerald doesn’t have a title yet but it does have a great plot to work off of. I loved the first book- which was creepy, had a completely awful, villainous main character, and full (I mean full) of murder- and it ended in a way that point to the sequel being just as good if not better. The first one had the quality of just watching the world burn, and I have a feeling this one’s going to be the same thing with maybe more flames. If you plan on picking up either of them, consider checking out the CWs, though!
Little Thieves by Margaret Owen got added to this immediately because Owen definitely gained my love and trust via The Merciful Crow duology, and I’m certain it’s going to be incredible solely because she’s a wonderful writer and her characters are a lot of fun- and speaking of characters, she’s already shared some drawings and info on them and they’re GREAT I cannot wait to meet them. This is a retelling of The Goose Girl story, from the maid’s POV!
Jade Fire Gold by June C.L. Tan was originally on my 2020 most anticipated but then 2020 happened so… yeah. But it is actually coming out in 2021, as long as the world doesn’t end again (fingers crossed). Inspired by East Asian mythology, this one is about a dangerous cult, a peasant cursed to steal souls, and an exiled prince!
The Heartbreak Bakery by A.R. Capetta is going to be one of those cute, fluffy, feel good reads, which I think we probably all need about now. I love Capetta’s work and their very queer characters, and I love the idea of a magical baker both breaking up and then getting couples back together. Also, the MC is agender- we love to see it.
The Second Coming by André-Naquian Wheeler follows a teen with a traumatic past falling for a boy who might be the second coming of Jesus Christ. Honestly, I’m a little nervous about this one- but also I almost wrote my own queer second coming story, so who am I to talk? I don’t know much more about this book, but I’m excited to see what it turns out like!

Duckverse Canon is a Lie
Dear duck fandom; We have almost 80 years of duck comics, starting with good ol’ Carl Barks back in the 40s. It’s absolutely fascinating how well these characters can hold up and with a little “translation” they look as fresh and actual as always!
So, even if there’s a high budget show right now (that is bringing more people into the fandom which makes me very happy) only time will tell if the characters they changed a lot will “stick” or not... Some characters, like Gladstone, organically evolved with the decades; every modern depiction of Gladstone shows a character way more likable and complex than the original half-goose. Same goes for Gus, who originally couldn’t even talk!
Back to my point... One of the beauties of this fandom is how loose our canons are, different authors wrote characters differently, different cultures changed the ducks and Duckburg for them to be more relatable and some characters evolved completely different in different countries (We have an artistic and smart smooth talker Fethry in Brazil, a naive and very childlike Fethry in Italy and a creepy more focused on the weird and crazy side of the character in the Dutch version of him!)
And isn’t that AMAZING!?
I know a lot of hardcore fans considers Don Rosa’s canon the “canonest”... But even Barks alone wrote some Scrooges being likable and some being downright evil!
Without Brazil, Italy, and the Europeans exclusive comics we wouldn’t have Fethry or a likable Gladstone! Or cousin shenanigans, or the base for Della’s personality for DT, or two more comics featuring Abner Duck (who’s a Barks’ canon character), or obscure characters that I love like Gideon McDuck and Kildare Coot!
Also, Goldie O’Gilt being an adventurer instead of a starving old lady at Scrooge’s mercy, Magica being a complex and badass female character, Elvira having adventures on her own, and a lot of other great strong female characters like Brigitta, Gloria, Dickie, Quackfaster...
So, my dears; there’s no such a thing as a Duckverse canon. Duckburg is a Frankenstein of ideas, decades, and cultures and its a true laboratory on character development! Just take whatever you like from a canon and glue with one another, because that’s what the writers were doing since always! In Brazilian canon, Duckburg is a mere bus trip from Rio de Janeiro!!!
So, you wanna make a story/fanart where DT 2017 version of the triplets need to help Darkwing duck fight against the Fearsome Four who are being paid by comics version of Flintheart Glomgold... and somehow the boys have Count Duckula as an ally!? GO. WILD. You don’t need an AU for that, that’s how things work ‘round these parts! Okay, maybe Duckula is an exception but we adopted him so it’s alright...
Duckverse was always chaos, people used to create random relatives and change the rules for Gladstone’s luck to work every comic... In some comics, Donald can’t cook an egg (Heresy!!!) and Fethry hates nerdy/geeky stuff... (Also heresy!!!)... And Gladstone’s mother and father? Is he adopted? Who the hell are Shamrock’s parents? ...What about Donald being adopted by Grandma and Scrooge, who sometimes are also brothers? You see, absolute utter chaos. In the end, what matters is that you’re having fun!
THE CANON DOES NOT EXIST
GO TRANSCEND IT

FIC: Hickory Dick-ory Dock (baon)
Summary: A prequel to the series, a glimpse at how Sans and Red's relationship got started.
Tags:  Kustard, Angst, Ecto-Genitalia, Sex, Antagonism, Brats to Lovers, Lemony Goodness
Notes:  Okay, this is the last kustard one, I swear, Edge and Stretch just needed a little break after everything that happened. Besides, with all this Sans and Red stuff coming up, I thought it might be interesting to see how they started out.
It's swell! Watch out for that lemony goodness!
Part of the ‘by any other name’ series.

Read it on AO3

~~*~~
It was either too early or way too fucking late to be awake, and Sans’s body hadn’t decided on which one yet. The only chair in the room was as shitty as the rest of the furniture, stiff-backed and with the kinds of stains it didn’t pay to think too deeply about. Not really worth sitting in except for those moments where someone shouldn’t be having a cigarette but still was. Supposed to be no smoking anywhere indoors, but in a motel that prided itself on a cash-only, Sans didn’t think anyone would be chasing them down for a cleaning fee.
Of the two vending machines by the elderly ice maker, only one of them worked and it reluctantly parted with a can of Pepsi for the rip-off price of two bucks. Not even an honest swindle, it was piss-warm and unsatisfying, even for someone without a proper throat.
The tiny bottle of whiskey he’d nabbed earlier on the plane was of a decent sort, though, helped smooth the path down, and by their powers combined, it was teetering on the edge of acceptable. Not like they were going to be here for long, anyway. Sulking about it would be petty waste of precious little time.
“you gonna offer me some of that or keep it for your private party?”
Sans glanced at the bed, but Red didn’t bother opening his sockets, still sprawled out in the wreck of the sagging mattress. A corner of the sheet was draped over his pelvis in a parody of modesty and the colorful splatter on his femurs made Sans idly think of the modern art at the museum Blue dragged all of them to a few weeks back.
Sans took a deliberate sip from the can, then a drag from the cigarette, holding in the smoke long enough for it to start seeping from his sockets before he exhaled it. “dunno, haven’t decided. maybe i like a solo act better.”
That got him a single socket opened, a thin rim of crimson showing. “yeah? was getting the idea earlier you preferred a duet. i spent the better part of an hour sucking you off, and this is the thanks i get?”
“isn’t it supposed to be the thought that counts when it comes to gifts?”
“uh huh, and what i’m thinking is it should be your turn to make your way downtown,” Red shifted, drawing his knees up and letting them fall to either side. The tangle of the sheet gave tantalizing glimpses of pelvis and the beginnings of a swirl of magic within it. “c’mere, little boy blue, come blow my horn.”
Sans snorted and crushed out the cigarette on the scarred old desk, leaving a blackened mark that matched a dozen others. “like i’ve never heard that before.”
“i know you haven’t,” Red gave him a sly, sulking look and rolled to his side, giving Sans his back, and yeah, he got the unspoken insult there. “you’ve never fucked anyone with my crushing wit.”
“mother goose ain’t exactly phd material and you might be crushing, but i’m the one pounding tonight.”
Sans hopped down from the chair and snagged the can, carrying it with him to the bed. He sat on the side of the mattress, trailing an idly finger down the intricate curves of Red’s spine. That was worth a faint sigh, exhaled through a jagged-tooth smile. Fondling the sensitive cartilage between each vertebra was better, Red arching into the touch with a hissed groan, undulating between that generously stroking hand and the stained sheets.
It added to the novelty of the occasion, could tack that sight right in with all the other scenery Sans never expected to see. Lovely bones, gleaming palely in the neon light creeping in through the slatted blinds covering the windows. The scars littering Red’s bones were predicable, but discovering the slimness of them beneath that ever-present jacket wasn’t, smaller even than Sans, all bulked up and hidden beneath heavy layers.
None of that made Red any less dangerous, but then, that was part of the fun, now wasn’t it.
His hand got lazy while Sans was taking in the sights and Red made a complaining sort of sound, rolling onto his back and stretching. The sheet, already doing a poor job at an attempt at modesty gave up even that, sliding completely loose. That left nothing covering Red but the remnants of come, still tacky yet, smearing as Red ran a pin-sharp fingertip up the inside of his femur. Sans watched, rapt, as red and blue mingled, sullied into purple.
“give me that.”
For a split second, Sans lurched obediently forward, ready to crawl between those femurs. Then he saw that wickedly sharp smirk curling up and noticed Red was reaching out towards the can that was starting to crumple in Sans’s too-tight grip.
It didn’t pay well to show Red any weakness and Sans swallowed down his flusterment, handing it over. Watched as Red tipped it back and swallowed down half the can in a single gulp. There was probably a pun to be made there, getting hit hard with a soft drink, but instead he only watched, tried not to think of what his eye lights were revealing as he stared at Red licking his teeth, the tips tinging to crimson as he nicked his own tongue against them.
“you gonna come down here or just enjoy the show?”
“i was about to leave,” Sans said, slowly. Like it wasn’t a lie and he wasn’t sitting here without even his shorts on. “paps will be wondering where i am.”
All the ambassadors were tucked away in their own five-star hotel, none of them suspecting their head of security and his second had skulked off, leaving them with the rest of the bodyguards. They were safe as houses, had to be or Red never would’ve been coaxed off, but Paps might come to his room, might ask for a bedtime story or just a chat.
“yeah, can’t let your little brother know you’re sneaking out to fuck around with me, now can you?” Poisonously sweet and okay, Red could, and did, get away with murder all the fucking time, but Sans wasn’t gonna let that slide.
“that how you want to play it?” Sans let a smirk of his own work its way loose. Like this lovely secrecy was for his benefit? “oh, miss mary, quite contrary, you want me to call him? i can give him the room number, see if he wants to stop in and verify. probably some paperwork that needs done, ain’t there, the bossman fucking his subordinate, bet he’d volunteer to help, he likes filling out forms.”
“you’d need form 109b, you’re the one who fucked me,” Red’s eye lights glittered with unnamed emotion. “hoping i’ll call you on that?”
“go ahead, if you think i’m joking, i could use a few chuckles."
“bet you could. i’m all about the jokes, but 3 am is a tough crowd.”
Sans ran his tongue along the even line of his teeth, considering. And then he went for blood. “we aren’t meeting up at roach motels to keep secrets from my brother. tell you what, wanna give the edgelord a call, instead? bet he and stretch are already done banging for the night, all curled up together for beddy-bye.”
“it’s 11am back in the states, i’m more likely to interrupt some meeting.” Oh, but there was blood in the water now, and fucking shark that he was, Red could smell it.
“great, then asgore can listen to our first ever porn podcast.”
Sans reached for his shorts and dug out his phone, humming as he pulled up Papyrus’s contact. “i don’t worry about my bro. let me give him a call, then you can call yours—”
His phone clattered to the floor as Red slapped it out of his hands. Sans kinda hoped it wasn’t broken, he wasn’t gonna have time to get a new one in the morning before all the meetings started and sitting there without candy crush to keep him entertained would be an endless nightmare.
“you gonna fuck me or not.” The words caught on a snarl, Red’s eye lights shading into a deep, harsher crimson, his mouth twisted into a grimace.
Sans hummed thoughtfully. “you gonna give me something to fuck?”
He did one better, rolling onto his front and forming ectoflesh from just beneath his ribcage to the tops of his femurs. The generously rounded globes of his ass were a bribe, but Sans wasn’t too proud to be cheap. He cupped them in both hands, firm flesh but with comfortable give.
But he wasn’t quite ready to be bought. “needed a nice cushion for some pushin?”
“you’re bitching at me for mother goose when you’re putting out that shit? fuck me, already, before i die of boredom—hnn!”
Seemed polite to wait until he was at the end of a sentence to push two fingers into his cunt. So slick inside, already practically dripping with want and Red whimpered as Sans worked to coax out a little more, pressed in another finger just to feel the hot stretch around his knuckles.
“huh. think i like your mouth better when you aren’t speaking,” Sans teased. He worked another finger in, all that slippery wetness making it easy. Yeah, much better like this, gasping and whining, mangling obscenities while Sans scissored his fingers inside him.
"yeah? think this is gonna shut me up?” Red managed to gasp, "gonna have to try harder than that, i could take your fucking fi—gah!!”
"what was that? seemed like you had something to say, sweetheart." Red gave it another try at the same moment Sans gave a little thrust with his fingers, letting them glide in and out, riding that silky wetness as Red’s curses tangled in between whines. In the interest of both their orgasms, it seemed best to reach up and push two fingers into his mouth, forcing him to suck on them and hoping Red didn’t take the opportunity to bite them off.
Instead, a moan vibrated through his phalanges, the slick little tongue between his fingers made him think of other places that mouth had been. Tight, hot little mouth almost as good as his tight little pussy and yeah, it was kinda vulgar to pull his fingers free, slip them still wet between Red's legs to rub his clit but the lovely little writhe he did excused it.
"oh,” Red groaned out, “that's…oh, fuck, you – yeah, just –"
Might be better if he took the continuing effort at speech as a compliment. Not difficult to do with the way Red was pushing back at him, wriggling and rolling his hips in a way that could never be taught, could only be known. He felt the sudden clench around his fingers as Red started to come and quickly pulled them out, left his cunt clenching on nothingness while he scooted back away.
Even as Red spat out curses in the ruins of his orgasm, Sans caught hold of his hips and dragged him up to his knees, hastily forming his cock. He rubbed it along the wet slit, but Red was squirming so much beneath him he slipped away on the first try.
“hold still!” Sans slapped one asscheek, and Red howled…and did it, spreading his knees wider to let him line up. Then he had to catch his own breath, that long, easy slide inside, surrounded by wet, clenching pussy. Easy, too easy to dig his fingers bruisingly into the giving ectoflesh of Red’s hips, lifting him to make the angle that much deeper. His rhythm was shitty and desperate, no finesse left to him. Sans could only drive in as hard as he could, his hips slapping against that generous, crimson backside.
Didn't matter, Red was along for the ride, both hands braced against the headboard and wood shavings curling around his razor fingertips as he dug them into the cheap particleboard. The room was a cacophony of conflicting sounds, flesh and bone striking, the bed frame creaking, and both of them breathing like they were about to dodge a blow. The sudden feeling of Red tightening around him in a sweet, constricting ripple made Sans gasp and listening to his choked, desperate cry as Red convulsed and came again was almost as good as coming himself.
Almost.
The air around them was thick with the scent of their sex, sourly spicy and nothing sweeter to soften it. Sans sagged down on top of Red, ignored his grunt as he let him take all of his weight, and breathed it in.
~~*~~
The sky was only graying with dawn when Sans woke up again. The bed was empty next to him, only the stained blankets and sheets to keep him company. Sans managed to crawl out of bed and headed towards the bathroom, gathering up his wrinkled t-shirt and shorts along the way.
Shitty as this little hotel managed to be, the mildewed shower still had plenty of hot water and Sans basked in it, scrubbing away the night before with the sliver of complimentary soap.
The cab ride would only take fifteen or so, but he still wouldn’t have time to get changed when he got back to the hotel where the ambassadors were staying. Paps would scold him for wearing the same thing as yesterday, loudly and with vigor, and groan at whatever puns Sans offered before slyly offering back one of his own.
But he wouldn’t say anything about Sans being gone all night in front of the others, those questions would only show in his worried glances, and soft, secret questions about whether Sans was being safe.
Damn shame Sans didn’t know the answer.
For now, it didn’t matter. Time to head back and play nice in front of the Ambassadors, and put on some sunglasses so no one could see if he fell asleep. Maybe tonight he could persuade Red out again and they’d give Humpty Dumpty a try or even Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater. Worth a shot.
He hummed as he stepped into his rumpled shorts and slipped on his t-shirt. If he hurried, he’d have time to grab coffee. Maybe this time he’d bring one for Red, too, the way he liked it for once, hot and bitter black.
Maybe. It wouldn’t hurt to be a little kind, just this once.

Best Martial Arts Movies on Amazon Prime Right Now
https://ift.tt/3iGgPxj
Search ‘Martial Arts Movies’ on Amazon Prime and you’ll get over a thousand results ranging from the classics to the campy, to the critically acclaimed. It’s an overwhelming library for the uninitiated and the mother lode for stalwart fans of the genre. There are so many gems buried in Amazon Prime that digging out the favorites is dirty challenging work but extremely rewarding.
When it comes to martial arts, Amazon Prime has a killer Kung Fu collection. The ‘80s were the ‘Golden Era’ of Kung Fu films when Hong Kong film studios cranked out films faster than any grindhouse ever. Many Hong Kong filmmakers put out up to half a dozen films a year, and most have hundreds of credits on IMDb. This glut of Kung Fu films spread to every Chinatown ghetto theater on the planet. And like with horror, American networks broadcasted late night Kung Fu Theater shows because there was so much cheap content available.
Consequently, Amazon Prime’s Kung Fu film selection leans heavily that way, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t include some non-Chinese favorites too. Martial Arts movies cross over to all other genres and nations. There are comedies, romances, horror, fantasy, sci-fi, and art house films. From countless cheesy low-budget exploitations, many so funky that they’re totally awesome, to the brilliant ground-breaking works that are staggeringly sensational, here’s some classic jewels and hidden treasures currently included with Amazon Prime membership.
Fist of Fury (1972)
Despite his fame, Bruce Lee only lived to see three of his martial arts movies premiere because Enter the Dragon and Game of Death were released posthumously. His impersonators are innumerable, so many that Bruceploitation is its own genre.
But Fist of Fury is the real Bruce in all his nunchuck spinning glory. It’s loosely based on the history of the Chin Woo Athletic Association, which remains one of the largest international martial arts organizations to this day. When Bruce shattered the ‘No Dogs and Chinese Allowed’ sign with a soaring flying kick, it became a battle cry for the racially oppressed worldwide, firmly cementing Bruce as the world’s first Asian global superstar.
Come Drink with Me (1966)
Long before Charlize Theron went Atomic Blonde, Cheng Pei Pei blazed a path as Golden Swallow, the mysterious invincible swordswoman, and all female action heroines are in her wake. Fiercely independent and savagely lethal, Cheng delivers several sophisticated long-take fight scenes, the hallmark of real Kung Fu skill, with the poise and precision built upon her foundation in ballet. Cheng is remembered in Hollywood as Jade Fox from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and played the matchmaker in Disney’s live-action Mulan. Note that Amazon Prime also has the sequel, Golden Swallow, but it’s not nearly as good.
Once Upon a Time in China (1991)
This tour de force from director Tsui Hark and Jet Li launched a six-film franchise and a TV series. Jet plays Wong Fei-hung, a real-life folk hero and Kung Fu master who has been depicted in well over a hundred films and TV shows. Set during the late 19th century, the film examines themes of Western colonization and Chinese cults, and while blatantly nationalistic, it captures Jet in his martial prime and contains some of his finest fights.

Amazon Prime also has Once Upon a Time in China II, which is an excellent sequel, however the third installment (not on Amazon Prime) falls apart, allegedly due to disputes between Jet and Hark.
Ashes of Time Redux (2008)
This was internationally acclaimed director Wong Kar-wai’s first stab at the martial arts genre. It’s sumptuously artsy and laboriously dystopic, not one to see for the action but the art. Based on a classic wuxia (wuxia is Chinese for martial arts genre books and film) titled The Eagle Shooting Heroes, Wong simultaneously filmed a parody titled after the book with the same cast. Wong did the Redux after the original print was lost, salvaging what was left, reediting and re-scoring it.
(Prime US only)
The Assassin (2015)
Director Hou Hsiao-hsien won Best Director at Cannes for this magnificent epic, which was also submitted as Taiwan’s Foreign Language entry at the Academy Awards. Starring the ever-glamorous Shu Qi, who made an early Hollywood crossover attempt with The Transporter, The Assassin is based on another wuxia tale that’s parallel to The Manchurian Candidate but instead of Korean brainwashing, it’s 9th century Chinese sorcery.

Ninjas All The Way Down: The Mysterious World of Godfrey Ho
By Craig Lines
The exquisite filmmaking makes this spectacular–panoramic landscapes, lavish costumes, intricately detailed sets, all gorgeous. Every shot is a stunning composition of light and shadow, and the camera lingers on each frame with ponderous and quiet respect, the kind that film students will gush over for years.
(Prime Video in the US, rent only in the UK)
Fearless Hyena (1979)
When people cite Rush Hour to reference Jackie Chan, it just goes to show they don’t know Jackie at all. Long before Jackie crossed over to Hollywood, he made dozens of films that truly captured his astounding Kung Fu skills, unrestricted by U.S. insurance liability. His late ‘70s period was particularly ripe because he was in peak physical shape and first creating his unique acrobatic comedies. Remember that chopstick dumpling training scene between Po and Shifu in Kung Fu Panda? In Fearless Hyena, Jackie and his shifu (James Tien) do it in live-action, no wires, no CGI, and the choreography is absolutely mind-blowing.
Wheels on Meals (1984)
Jackie Chan earned his Kung Fu prowess from being trained from childhood in traditional Chinese Opera. Many of his classmates also became stars in martial arts film. This is one of two collaborations between him and his two martial brothers, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao (the other is Dragons Forever).

Jackie Chan’s Hard Road to Hollywood

A modern comedy shot in Barcelona, the chemistry between Jackie, Sammo and Yuen is magical as they bring the fastest three-person sparring scenes ever captured. On top of that, Jackie faces off against real-life kickboxing champion Benny ‘The Jet’ Urquidez in what is considered by many as the greatest fight scene ever filmed.
(US only)
Knockabout (1979)
Knockabout is Yuen Biao’s first lead role after dozens of supporting roles. His acrobatic skills are unparalleled, stronger than Jackie’s because his body frame is built like a gymnast. Sammo Hung’s girth has typecast him as villains and buffoons. Nevertheless, he’s a leading director and choreographer and serves as both in this film, on top of playing a comic beggar who trains Yuen in jump rope monkey Kung Fu (that’s right–jump rop –you have to see it to understand).

It’s a slow build past some goofy comic hijinks, because Yuen’s skills improve over the course of the film. But once the training begins through to the final fight, Yuen and Sammo show why they are legends in the industry.

Dirty Ho (1979)
When this film came out, the title wasn’t as funny as it is now. But it still works in a way because this is one of the best Kung Fu slapstick comedies. Starring some of top talent from Shaw Brother studios, including Gordon Liu, Wang Yue, and Lo Lieh, it’s full of the stylish long-take choreography and blazing stunts using real fire long before CGI.

The Man From Hong Kong: A Genuinely Dangerous Action Movie
By Craig Lines
It’s a classic tale of hidden master, a punk student, and notorious villains, including hilarious absurdities like sex change tea, and wheelchair and crutch fighting. The discreet Kung Fu challenge while sampling rare wines out of crazy cups is ludicrous fun; the sort that only master fight choreographer Lau Kar-leung can deliver.
The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter (1984)
Here is another classic from Gordon Liu and Lau Kar-leung, but serious and somber. Alexander Fu Sheng, a prominent leading man, died in a tragic car crash during production, making this his final film. His character suffers PTSD after losing his family in a horrific opening ambush, but his storyline dangles unfinished.

Based on the legend of the Yang family generals, the untimely death tugs hard on the heartstrings for anyone in the know.
Return to the 36th Chamber (1980)
Just one more Gordon Liu and Lau Kar-leung project, this is the sequel to The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, which is also amazing and available on Amazon Prime. However, Return to the 36th Chamber has such an odd concept for a sequel that warrants special attention.

The 36th Chamber Trilogy‏ – Essential Kung Fu Movie Viewing
By Craig Lines
Liu plays a swindler impersonating the Shaolin monk San Te, the character he played in the first film. When his clan is oppressed by the Manchus gang, Liu sneaks into Shaolin, only to be deceptively trained by the real San Te, then returns for vengeance. His clan are cloth dyers, which makes for colorful pools for villains to plunge.
Liu’s uproarious rooftop Kung Fu and his battle with Wang Lung-Wei’s bench-fighter gang are outstanding. Kara Hui has the best retort after Gordon tries to play off his lack of Kung Fu, claiming it’s only for “universal peace,” and not revenge. She claps back “Huh! That’s a stupid Kung Fu.”
The Lady is the Boss (1983)
Kara Hui (aka Kara Wai) is one of the greatest Kung Fu divas of all, yet she’s only known by true devotees of the genre. If you’ve never heard of her, here is one of her finest comedy vehicles. Set in modern-day Hong Kong, Hui plays an American master returning to save her father’s Kung Fu school after his passing. Lau Kar-leung is the eldest student in charge (also the choreographer) and he resists her attempts to modernize.
Long take fights are staged in a topless club, a disco, and finally, a gymnastic gym replete with rings, parallel bars, and a beam, perfect for the choreographic shenanigans only Lau can bring. Gordon Liu appears with hair, which feels wrong because he built his reputation on playing bald monks.
Crippled Avengers (1978)
From director Chang Cheh, the “Godfather of Kung Fu Films,” Crippled Avengers stars four members of the Venoms crew, from Chang’s classic The Five Venoms (also available on Amazon Prime).

The Five Deadly Venoms: An Essential Martial Arts Movie
By Craig Lines
It was repackaged as The Return of the Five Venoms (and also Mortal Combat), however it is its own standalone masterpiece and has nothing to do with the original beyond the cast.
Lu Feng (Centipede from the Venoms crew) gets his arms chopped off and replaced by iron arms (a plot device that RZA echoed The Man with the Iron Fists). Lu and his father, played by the rough and tumble Chan Kuan Tai, cripple the heroes, who must then walk the road of vengeance while handicapped. The portrayal of the disabilities is dated (arm tied behind the back for the amputee, eyes closed for the blinded) but the choreography is ingenious.
Five Elements Ninjas (1982)
Another echo of The Five Venoms from the sanguineous Chang Cheh, Five Elements Ninjas showcases the director’s unique eye for fantasy. It’s an orgy of weird fantasy weapons and ultraviolence, bloody fight scene after bloody fight scene, a cult film of truly epic proportions. As the title says, the ninjas are based on the five elements.
The gold ninjas don gold lame suits and switchblade shield hats. The wood ninjas look like rejected apple trees in The Wizard of Oz. If you turn this film into a drinking game where you take a shot whenever blood is spilled, you won’t make it past the first half hour.
The Web of Death (1976)
What is the ultimate Kung Fu WMD? It’s a tarantula that roars like an elephant and shoots acidic webs, sparks, and death rays, and it decimates the wuxia world. The Web of Death has everything a cult film requires: crazy weapons, cross dressing, romance, complex set-pieces, halls of traps, including acid pits, spiked poles and dragon-headed sparkler cannons, silly superheroes and villains in costumes that would make MCU heroes blush. Filled with jaw dropping WTF moments, it’s a real treat for anyone into cheesy over-the-top Kung Fu cinema.
The Bride with White Hair (1993)
Based on a wuxia novel, The Bride with White Hair is a surreal plunge into the Kung Fu subgenre of Fant-Asia which blossomed in the ‘90s. It’s a doomed romance between rival cult members set in a world of swords and sorcery that stars Brigette Lin in the spurned titular role and the dreamy heartthrob Leslie Cheung.
What makes this stand out was the visionary direction of Ronny Yu. His pre-CGI special effects hold up surprisingly well. Lin’s characterization of the bride was so compelling that it spawned an homage in The Forbidden Kingdom and a remake in The White Haired Witch. The Bride with White Hair II is also available on Amazon Prime which reunites Lin and Cheung, but without Yu’s direction it’s not nearly as special.
(US only)
Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2010)
Fant-Asia has been revitalized with the advent of CGI. Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame marked a triumphant return to form for director Tsui Hark. Armed with quixotic special effects, Hark casts Andy Lau as the legendary detective Di Renjie, who is like a Tang Dynasty Sherlock Holmes. Wuxia films are akin to comic book movies, filled with glaringly overdone heroes and villains, super saturated color schemes, and a lot of flying about.
It’s high fantasy wirework in front of CG backgrounds with physics-defying fight choreography by Sammo Hung (Kung Fu physics are not subject to the laws of gravity). Most of all, it takes unexpected turns like the old Fant-Asia story arcs have always done.
(US only)
Tai Chi Zero (2012)
Director Stephen Fung took Fant-Asia another step into an emergent subgenre of Shanghai Steampunk (Legend of Korra is another example). It’s an action comedy about the legendary forefather of Tai Chi, Yang Luchan, in what was meant to be the launch of a trilogy. However, it was filmed back-to-back with the second installment, Tai Chi Hero (not free on Amazon Prime), which was released only a month later and that proximity depleted their box office returns.
Nevertheless, Tai Chi Zero was an Official Selection at several notable international film festivals because it was so stylish and funny. Both films end on cliffhangers in anticipation of the next chapter, but Tai Chi Hero loses the momentum of its predecessor, except for the final cliffhanging tease. There’s been no further development on the final chapter Tai Chi Summit since Tai Chi Hero flopped.
(US only)
JCVD (2012)
Jean-Claude Van Damme opens this French film with a remarkable long take fight, showing he still had it on the brink of turning 50, but it’s not really a martial arts film. He plays a self-deprecating caricature of himself, although not as comedic as his lampooning self-portrayal in the Amazon Original Series Jean-Claude Van Johnson.
There’s some top-notch cinematography including more complex long takes, remarkable displays of technical skill, and directorial timing. But it’s all about Van Damme’s confession scene when he breaks the fourth wall and discusses his filmmaking process in that weird recursive, artsy French film way. It’s a long-take monologue, and Van Damme nails it emotionally with a heartfelt confession that’s not so much amazing acting as it is brutally honest. He lays it out, bares his soul, and surprisingly, it’s a sympathetic soul. It’s a truly captivating scene, a dramatic triumph that no one ever saw coming, completely redefining Van Damme as an actor.
(US only)
The Man from Nowhere (2010)
This was Korea’s highest grossing film that year. It’s a gritty and brutally bloody tale of a pawnshop owner, played by Won Bin, who unwittingly receives a camera bag filled with stolen heroin, attracting the attention of the drug ring gangsters.
However, he’s a retired special agent with fierce combat skills, tossed into a ghetto tale with exotic dancers, organ harvesting, an innocent child who needs protection, and gang wars. Won Bin won many dramatic accolades with the five films he made, including Taegukgi and Mother. This was his final one to date and he sells the ultraviolence with remarkable panache.
(Prime Video in the US, rent only in UK)
Kundo: Age of the Rampant (2014)
This is another outstanding Korean martial arts film, set in the Joseon period. It echoes Robin Hood, complete with a fighting monk like Friar Tuck, a Maid Marian type, only she’s a keen archer, and a Little John character wielding a shot-put ball on a rope for brutal ultra violence. Ha Jung-woo stars as the lead, a butcher who wields butcher knives, which just adds to the bloodiness. The fight choreography is fun and sanguineous, and the characters were well fleshed out, even the villain. Like a lot of Korean cinema, it takes some surprising turns in the details, little scenes that feel fresh in their presentation. And the panoramic shots are visually epic.
(US only)
Redeemer (2015)
Marko Zaror brings an exotic Chilean actioner full of fight choreography that’s merciless, witty, and precise. Zaror is cut and yoked like a beast. He can catch great flying kicks air, roll well for nods to MMA, and handle complex continuous fights. Redeemer includes several long take scenes with the camera aggressively circling around battle, showcasing a masterful command of action and cinematography.
Set in Chile’s cool seascapes and weather worn graffiti-covered ghettos, Redeemer has a strong Catholic theme, lots of crucifixes and pondering about divine justice, which totally works as atmosphere for this fascinating fight flick.
The Octagon (1980)
Before Chuck Norris became an invincible meme, he churned out a handful of Hollywood martial arts feature films. His third effort, The Octagon, co-starring Lee Van Cleef, is one of his best. It’s a ninja tale, pitting Chuck against noted masters like Richard Norton, Tadashi Yamashita, and his brother Aaron Norris, fighting his way into a ninja terrorist camp where the central ring is “the Octagon.” It was this film that inspired Jason Cusson to design the trademarked Octagon used in the Ultimate Fighting Championships.
Ninja III: The Domination (1984)
In the ‘80s, there was a proliferation of cheesy Ninja films and Sho Kosugi dominated the trend. This is one of those movies that is so horrible, it’s awesome. And it’s Sho’s masterpiece. Lucinda Dickey was a Solid Gold Dancer, who starred in the breakdancing films Breakin’ and Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo, which bookended Ninja III. While she wasn’t a martial artist in real life, she has the moves, adding to the huge stable of martial actors who started as dancers (even Bruce Lee was a cha cha champion).
It’s incredibly dated with references to video games, aerobics, and the most gawdawful soundtrack ever. The choreography is horrible; Sho overacts whenever it comes to selling a punch; it’s all about Lucinda who tries–really tries–to act her way through a ridiculously dumb story about being possessed by a ninja. But the final sword fight has a ninja zombie and it’s the funniest example of what we had to endure during the ‘80s ninja craze.
(US only)
Shaolin Dolemite (1999)
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
There was Oscar buzz about Eddie Murphy’s depiction of Rudy Ray Moore in the biopic Dolemite Is My Name, but if you haven’t seen a Dolemite film, you really don’t know. Moore played Dolemite half a dozen times, but ironically in this film, he plays Monk Ru-Dee instead, and this is the only one with any real martial arts in it.
Moore took the cuttings from a 1986 Taiwanese film titled Ninja: The Final Duel, and spliced himself in to create his own story, and it’s just so cray. Beyond Moore, there are bizarre characters like the drunken Sam the Spliff, the topless Ninja Ho, and the coonskin cap wearing Davy Crockett. The story barely makes a lick of sense, but who cares? It’s mother-effin Dolemite.

feel free to leave me a kiss prompt and pair
It had been years since Dean was able to spend time with his two best friends from high school. Castiel and Jimmy Novak moved on to bigger and better things after high school. Jimmy and Castiel both went to medical school. Both studied to be surgeons, one cardiology the other pediatrics. Dean was proud of both of them and never let it know how much it had hurt him to be away from the twins. He knew they would accomplish great things. That's why when Dean had gotten the call from Jimmy boasting the good news about himself and Castiel, he wasn't surprised. Both men had made it through undergrad and graduate school, about to embark into their residency. While it had been over eight years since he had seen either of the brothers, Dean was bound and determined to see them now.It was also a good way to see if he still felt the way he had in high school. Dean sighed at his own thoughts. He was such a moron in high school. He was so far in the closet about his bisexuality that he surpassed Narnia. In fact, he's pretty sure the closet was really the Tardis because of how big and well hidden he was.Jimmy outed Dean first. True, it was only to Castiel, but it was enough. But with that outing, Dean was able to breathe and be himself around the brothers. At least, until he fell in love. But that wasn't the biggest problem. The biggest problem was that he had fallen in love with both of the Novak boys. And it was hard not too. The two of them were like yin and yang. They balanced each other perfectly. Jimmy being more carefree and reminding both Dean and Castiel to let loose and live free, while Castiel was more reserved, a good head on his shoulders. It was a long running joke between the three that twins were the devil and angel that would help Dean decide. Castiel being the angel and Jimmy the devil. But regardless of how well the three of them got along, it was absurd of Dean to even fathom having both of them. Even at his young age, he had known it was wrong to date them both, essentially cheating on one with the other. Of course, no matter what his rational mind tried to think, his irrational heart would often lead him into fantasies with the twins. Downright pornographic fantasies that would leave him hard and achy and needing to run to the shower, before either one woke up when staying over on the weekends. Then after the boys left to study medicine on the East coast, the rumors started. Everyone in their godforsaken town would tell anyone who was listing about those “incestuous Novak kids” and how Dean's parents should be thanking God that their sinful ways didn't rub off on him. Once he hit twenty-one and some asshole started blabbing at the mouth, speaking ill of his best friends, Dean suddenly had himself a bed in the county lockup. No matter what, he had refused to let his desires believe the talk. He never pushed the twins when they talked to each other or face timed. He wouldn't even tell him what he had heard. Dean had felt it better than if they were involved with each other, that maybe they would trust him enough to tell him. This line of thinking wasn't currently helping him at this moment in time as his train from Kansas pulled into the Baltimore station. He felt like he was going to be sick from the combination of anxious and excited nerves.
Jimmy laughed as his brother bounced on the balls of his feet, desperate to see over the heads around him. They had both heard the announcement that Dean's train had pulled into the station. Jimmy thought it was silly that Dean was still adamant in his refusal to get on a plane. Thank God, Castiel had a strange fascination with modern ways of transportation and was able to convince Dean that take the train was far more economical than driving himself. Truth be told, Jimmy was ninety-nine-point-nine percent sure the only reason Dean relented was that Castiel laid a mother of a guilt trip on the poor guy. Regardless how it came to pass, the day that both he and his brother had longed for was here. And for the first time in who knows how long, Jimmy was witnessing a side of his brother he doesn't see very often.“Cas, seriously...” he pulled his brother's wrist, the only acceptable way to hold him in public. “Stop bouncing, you're going to pull something.” he teased.Castiel looked back at his with a wide smile and crinkly blue eyes. “I can't help it! I've missed him. And he's going to be here for a whole month. That's thirty-one days, Jimmy!”“Yeah and I'm excited too, Cas. But what if he isn't okay with things?”That made Castiel stop his movements as he turned to look at his brother. Even now, while Jimmy had filled out more in the shoulders, he was Castiel's mirror. And in that mirror, Jimmy had voiced the one thing Castiel had tried his hardest to keep from coming to light. Knowing that it would affect Jimmy just as much as it did him.Castiel stepped closer, hooking his pinky under Jimmy's watch band. “You need to have faith in Dean.”Jimmy smiled at that. Of course, Castiel would say that. “You still okay being the DD tonight?” Jimmy asked, a signal that he was okay. Castiel flashed him another brilliant smile before looking for Dean again.“Of course. I still say we should drink that the apartment. That way I can do it too.”Jimmy snorted. “No way, dude. We would need to buy out two BevMo's just to make you have a buzz.”.Castiel was poised to say something in response but a familiar baritone calling their names snapped both of their attention to the right. They had barely made visual confirmation before both brothers were wrapped into the stronghold of Dean. Jimmy tried to ignore how right it felt.
Castiel had gotten his way. Once Dean had heard wind of how he wanted to stay home and drink rather than a bar crawl, Dean sided with him. Dean had a point when he mentioned to Jimmy that they missed their chance to celebrate their twenty-first together and tonight would be their do-over.“But what if we lost our virginity that night?” Jimmy challenge, already feeling a buzz from the locally brewed stuff Cas preferred.Dean scoffed and shook his head. “Are you kidding? You two are far too good looking to have not had gotten laid before then.”Jimmy shrugged. “We were fifteen and it was awkward as fuck,” he giggled a little at the memory and Castiel frowned at him.“It was only awkward because Anna walked in right after.”Dean couldn't help but laugh at the image of their cousin walking in on their post-coital fog. He shook his head. There was no way that did that together.“Actually there is,” Castiel said softly causing Dean to gape at him.“Did I say that out loud?”Jimmy laughed and nodded. “Cassie was my first,” he sang as he crawled from his spot on the floor over to Cas who was suddenly more interested in his bottle of gray goose.“No way...” Okay, Dean was officially fucking drunk, Castiel thought as Dean stared at them in wide-eyed fascination.“Yep. He taught me how to kiss. And I learned how to make him come apart with just my tongue,” Jimmy explained, stopping himself on all fours near Cas. He face was so close that Castiel could smell the beer on his breath. “Jimmy,” Castiel hissed trying to get his brother to stop as Dean made a whining noise. “Wanna see?” Jimmy asked looking over at Dean who nodded. “Look, Cassie. Dean wants to watch.”“Jim-”Castiel's words were abruptly cut off by his brother's very drunkenly, sloppy kiss. It was too much tongue and way too wet to be enjoyable. Seriously was Jimmy trying to lick Castiel's face like a cow does a salt lick? Normally Castiel could handle his drunken brother but this was just too much for Castiel and too awkward. He pushed Jimmy back, who made a sound of protest.“You're drunk,” Castiel said flatly.“And horny!” Jimmy laughed as Castiel rolled his eyes before looking at Dean who was watching them with interest.“I apologize, Dean. It was not my intention for you to find out about us while under the influence.”Dean shrugged. “It's okay, Cas. I just wish you guys would have told me sooner.”That made Jimmy sit back on his haunches as he darted his gaze between Castiel and Dean.Castiel sighed. “I understand, that what we do is taboo. But I love Jimmy. I can't help that.”“Cas?” Castiel looked up to see Dean smiling at him. “Dude, you don't have to explain it. I've been in love with you both since sophomore English. I just didn't know how to tell you or act on it honestly.”“Easy. You just did. Can we go fool around now?” Jimmy asked causing the others to laugh.Castiel shook his head. “No. Water. Aspirin. Bed. We'll talk about this when we're sober.”They did talk about it. For all of ten minutes. After which the twins took turns showing off their skills to Dean. Jimmy was a much better kisser when he was sober. Just saying.

Been tagged
Hy, everyone, I was tagged some time ago by the great @unicornglitternutellacookie and apparently now I have to do the following:
Rules - copy this post into a new text post, remove my answer and put it in your own. When you are done tag up to 10 people and also tag the person that tagged you... Most importantly, have fun.
a/ Age - 22. Already lost my chance to get to Hogwarts or Never land. But I still try every morning to get through my looking glass, so I got that going for me.
b/ Biggest fears - Clowns, don’t ask why. It’s obvious, they are terrorizing. No, actually my biggest fear is loosing my family. How is that for honesty?
c/ Current time - 19:41 in the beautiful city of Barcelona.
d/ Drink you had last - Chocolat.
f/ Favorite song - I love a different song from every gender and thematic. You want classic, modern, pop, rock, soul, jazz, blues, heavy, reggae? I suppoose the one I'm more ready to sing every time of the day is Bohemian Rhapsody. Mamaaaaaa!
g/ Ghosts are real? - The ones you make for yourself, the ones in your mind, are real. The other ones, I don’t think so. Of course I can not prove it, but then again, I can’t prove that the invisible giant pink rabbit named Harvey exists, so...
h/ Homeareacountry - Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain.
i/ In love with - My family? Oh, god, that sounds depressing. The truth is, I broke up with my boyfriend, and best friend this summer. And I’ve spend this months falling out of love. But I’m quite happy now. And I love myself, which is nice.
j/ Jealous of - Writers that can live of their work.
k/ Kinks - Uhhh, that’s interesting... Chocolate and something more. But you wouldn’t want me to tell you . It’s good to be mysterious sometimes.
l/ Last time you cried - Two weeks ago, on my period, watching an add with puppies. My hormones get extremely crazy when I’m  on my period. That’s why I need the chocolate.
m/ Middle name - Victoria, a name for royalty. A name that means victory. OHHH YEAH!!!
n/ Number of siblings - Two
o/ one wish - To have five. And if that’s not possible I want an unicorn, a dragon or a golden goose.
p/ Person you last called or texted - My dad
q/ Questions you are always asked - Is your book based on true events? / Are you half German? / Did you have nazis in your family? / From what did your mother day? To which the answers are: No / Yes / Some / Cancer
r/ Reasons to smile - A nice cup of tea, my friends at university, my family most of the time, the concerts I’ll soon be going to, a meet cute, great Mediterranean food, a summers day on the beach, warming up after the rain, the sea, a nice song, a good book, my geek friends, girls night out, carnival, a funny movie, my cat, you people....
s/ Song last sang - High, high, high to tie! Space Taxi, to the sky!!! Feuer Salamander, macht Beine auseinander, macht Beine wieder su und raus bist du! (Space Taxi from the movie Traumschiff surprise!)
Tumblr media
t/ Time you woke up - 11:45
u/ Underwear color - Brown downstairs, black and maroon upstairs.
v/ Vacation destination - If I have money (Big if) Scotland or la Toscana, depending on who joins me and if we can get a car.
w/ Worst habit - Natural born dreames and procrastinator
y/ Your favorite food - Changes every day. Right now I just want some grapes.
z/ Zodiac sign - Taurus
So, since I don’t really now that many people on tumblr I’m just going to tag anyone that appears on my tag suggestions. Sorry....

Narratology Lecture Notes 3
Noteable Books
The Enchanted Screen: The Unknown History of Fairy-Tale Films (2011), Jack Zipes
From the Beast to the Blonde: On Fairytales and their Tellers (1994), Marina Warner
Morphology of the Folktake, Vladimir Propp
“One of the best-kept secrets in the study of the cinema concerns the neglect of the influential role that the fairy-tale narrative has played in informing most of the films ever made” (Zipes, 2011)
What is a fairy-tale? “A wonder tale involving marvellous elements and occurrences, though not necessarily about fairies.” Encyclopedia Britannica
Fairytales do end “happily”
Justice is served, there is closure (such as the fate of the step-mother in Grimm’s Snow White, forced to dance to her death in red-hot iron slippers fresh from the fire)
Bluebeard (1697), Charles Perrault May have roots in real life story of a 15th century serial killer Bluebeard gives his new wife a key to a secret room that she must never enter, and inside the room are all his dead wives.
Medieval versions of Cinderella: her step-sisters slice off their toes to fit in the slipper - versions which the Grimm brothers based their story on. The Fairy Godmother was Perrault’s romanticised version. Cinderella is actually helped by birds who visit a tree she plants on her mother’s grave. The step-sisters are physically beautiful and inwardly ugly, and are punished for their deception and cruelty by having their eyes pecked out by pigeons (the natural world can only ever be appeased, not tamed). The glass slipper was originally made of squirrel fur.
The Little Engine That Could (1921), Lucy Sprague Mitchell Focuses on stories about the “here and now” because old fairytales had peculiar and disturbing images.
Dr. Gardner’s Fairy Tales for Today’s Children, 1974 Disturbing psychological messages removed - Cinderella decides the prince is out of her league, opens her own dress shop and marries a hardworking printer from the shop next door.
The earliest fairytales were shared amongst adults, contained serious meanings and ritualistic elements with clear polarity between good and evil. Draws lines between myth and religion. We can never be that heroic or that perfect in our actual life.
Fairytales rarely have names and instead use nicknames (Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella), implying that they could be us. They are about “everyman” and “everywoman”.
Angela Carter (1940-1992), feminist writer (dark fairytales: The Bloody Chambers (1979)) brought sex and death to fairytales.
Modern “subversions” often reject the “polarity” of the old-fashioned tale. (Charle’s Perrault’s 1967 version of the tale, Little Red Cap, was a clear warning to “stick to the path”: danger was “out there”, in the forest, a thing to be avoided.
Angela Carter suggests that danger is also “in here”, in us - our “inner hairiness”

The trouble with live action fairytales are special effects.
Animation: the ideal medium for fairytales?
Disney has started doing live action as well as animation (the new Beauty and the Beast has CGI puppets)
Who is the audience aimed at?
Muppet fairytales
CGI is so good now that you can use elements of that in a live action and create a believable movie - NASA didn’t believe that the movie “Gravity” was actually CGI
“Metamorphosis defines the fairytale” Marina Warner, 1994
“Shapeshifting is one of fairytale’ dominant and characteristic wonders: hands are cut off, found and reattached, babies’ throats are slit, but they are later restored to life, a rusty lamp turns into an all-powerful talisman, a humble pestle and mortar becomes the winged vehicle of the fairy enchantress and the slattern in the filthy donkey skin turns into a golden-haired princess.”

The Fleischer Brothers, Snow White: A Cartoon Fairy Tale (1933)
“The moveable silhouette charmingly maintains the right balance between the product of art and life; we believe enough to be enthralled, and we do not believe it enough to get the goosebumps we get when experiencing the supernatural.” Rudolph Arnheim (film critic) describes the silhouette film as the ideal medium for the realisation of a fairy tale.

“The Three Brothers”, The Tales of Beedle the Bard, J. K. Rowling 3 minute animated shadow-play sequence created by Framestore, for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part One) Follows along the idea that silhouette is best for fairytale - the animation is precise and straight to the point with no focus on details. Assumed to be a brief history of the Peverell brothers, who each owned a Deathly Hallow (Elder Wand, Resurrection Stone, Invisibility Cloak) that made up one Master of Death. J. K. Rowling loosely based this on Geoffrey Chaucer’s “The Pardoner’s Tale”. Follows the idea of the “rule of threes”, and would probably be more of a fable than a fairytale. Has connotations to the “Three Billy Goats Gruff” which also features three goats trying to cross a river manned by a troll.
Has several interpretations and morals: taught to wizarding children to provide humility and morality, teaches that you “cannot cheat death” and you will eventually “part [with death] as equals”, suggests that extreme greed leads to an untimely death.

Disney was among the first (Zipes, 2011) “to realise how the fairy-tale genre might be enriched by film in unimaginable ways, and how film might be enriched by the fairy tale.”
Disney did “Bowdlerise” (so called for Thomas Bowdler who produced a ten volume set of the collected works of Shakespeare in 1818 which took out all the “offensive” content) the tales he told.
One hand, he was entitled to this - fairytales have always been subject to change depending on the audience they’re aimed at (Disney wanted as big of an audience as possible).
Other hand, the emphasis on romance - on dreams “magically” coming true - could stand in opposition to the true moral of the fairy tale: that rewards are earned by overcoming tests and challenges rather than simply “wishing” for things.
Epic Forumals in the Folktale (1908), Axel Olrik - identified so-called “Epic Laws” including:
The Laws of Threes - “three is the maximum number of men and objects that occur in a traditional narrative”
The Law of Repetition - actions in folk tales are typically repeated 3 times
Such as Grimm’s Snow White, the bodice laces, poisoned comb, poisoned apple
The Law of Contrast - other people should be antithetical to the hero; therefore if the hero is generous, other characters should be “stingy” to contradict him.
The Law of Twins - two people can appear together in the same role, and should be similar in nature
The Law of Patterning - situations and events are told and re-told in “as a similar a manner as possible”
Olrik also said that folktales are “single-stranded” have a “unity of plot”. There is a Concentration on a Leading Character. They don’t branch off into sub-plots.
“31 Functions” - Vladimir Propp analysed 100 Russian fairy tales and found striking similarities between them. He found they were all built on a pattern drawn from 31 functions (actions) occurring in a set order. In other words, only 31 things can happen in a fairytale.
Alfred Hitchcock 1939 “MacGuffin” described this as a plot device
Before Propp’s seminal work, fairy tales were categorised according to type (animal stories, fantastical stories, etc.) or “motif” (the appearance of a dragon). There were weaknesses: many tales belonged in more than one category, and the system did nothing to illuminate the underlying structure of the fairytale. Propp argued that fairytales had a “particular structure” and, although many details were variable, there were also set elements, or constants.
Any basic plot “will have static elements and variable elements. If we decide, for example, that the quest is a basic plot then we can say that a static example is that it will always involve a journey. A variable would be the destination.” Thomas, 2012
You can’t find 31 functions in 1 story
Propp’s “dramatis personae” (characters, like the archetypes)
Villain
Doner
Helper
Princess and the Father (single agent)
Dispatcher
Hero
False Hero
Villain appears twice usually - sneaks up, is sought out - Hans from frozen saves Ana from falling into the ocean, Ana then seeks him out for true love’s kiss
Doner is encountered accidentally and provides the hero with a magical object or gift (such as Rumplestiltskin)
Helper - such as the fairy godmother
An “initial situation” is followed by any of 31 functions, organised into 6 stages: Preparation (1-7), Complication (8-10), Transference or donation (11-15), Struggle (16-19), Return (20-22), Recognition (or difficult task) (23-31).
Deviations on Propp’s theory do occur. It aimed to catalogue oral fairytales of Russian origin, and he admits that it may not fit all fairytales.
Useful Vocabulary
Märchen - popular folktales, oral in origin (predate written records, many are hundreds, if not thousands, of years old) Kunstmärchen - literary (written) or artistic fairytales, mostly produced in the 19th century (such as The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen (1837) Morphology - the study of forms Dramatis Personae - Proppian version of the archetypes
