Netflix premieres the miniseries 'Nada Ortodxa'
On March 26, Netflix premiered the miniseries “Nada Ortodoxa” (Unorthodox). The production is inspired by the autobiographical book “Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots” (Unorthodox: the scandalous rejection of my Hasidic roots ) by author Deborah Feldman. The miniseries of just four episodes is starring the expressive Israeli actress Shira Haas.
The plot
Director Maria Schrader starts from the book by writer Deborah Feldman to insert the viewer into the daily life of a young woman who grew up within the Hasidic sect Satmar, in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York.
The protagonist Esther Shapiro (Shira Haas) is a young woman of 19 who always knew she was different from the people of that community, until the point of abandoning her arranged marriage, she flees to Germany in the midst of Shabbat celebrations.
There are two narrative lines in the miniseries, one is that of Esther's husband, Yakov Shapiro (Amit Rahav), who together with his cousin Moische Lefkovitch (Jeff Wilbusch) go in search of the first's wife. The other narrative line is that of the wife who leaves home. on her journey, the young woman knows Berlin and also herself.
Esther's plot is filled with flashbacks that range from just before her wedding to the young woman's no-return decision to run away from home.
Rebellion
The new Netflix miniseries made a careful reproduction of the elements that make up the habits and customs of one of the most orthodox aspects of Judaism. The particularities of this community are not often seen in the cultural industry, now the situation is changing, coincidentally, another recent production portrayed this community through a history of rebellion, it was in the film “Disobedience” (2018), starring the stars Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams.
The production directed by Maria Schrader is more interested in telling the story of contemporary women than in criticizing religion. In the work, women are seen looking for their own space in the middle of a world dominated by men, in which even the pleasure in the sexual relationship between husband and wife, must be only of man. The German director focuses her attention on showing dogmas that have imprisoned women for centuries, so the only way to get rid of this situation is through rebellion.
While the work shows Esther as a victim of this patriarchy – and also the protagonist's own mother – the production does not seem to want to turn her husband Yakov Shapiro into a villain, on the contrary, he also ends up being the victim of an extremely rigid system and without realizing it, he ends up simply reproducing the behavior that is expected of him.
The villain
Moische Lefkovitch, Yakov's cousin can be considered the villain of the plot, but even he can also be one more who did not resist the high expectations of living in this community, he can be seen as a kind of distorted mirror of Yakov.
Bonus
After the four episodes of the production, Neflix also made a making of “Nada Ortodoxa” for those who want to know more about the story that was told. Even though Esther's arc has been completed, there are still elements to be explored in the universe of the series, now it remains to be seen whether the audience will be interested in a possible second season.
